What do you mean "out of square"?

Harbaugh FTW! Jimmy....
Dart is apparently shipping a 3rd set of caps out.... and they actually measured this set and is square.... supposedly. Whatever.
What do you mean "out of square"?
on the square
1. Mathematics At right angles.
2. Honestly and openly: has always dealt on the square.
out of square
1. Mathematics Not at exact right angles.
2. Not in agreement.

Going to powdercoat next day or 2.
Aluminum hubs
Gun drilled axles
3.06" hub snout/wheel center bore (Standard GM is 2.78")
Not sure where we ended on width -- we are mimicking Jake's old 2nd gen for most of those specs
Looking for a Detroit Locker in the 3.64 to 3.70 range.

Mascoll is great to work with. Really like how this came out. And with the varied wheels, flare shapes, spoiler sizes, and colors, this render project was a needed part of the process to get to completion. Of course the final final rendition in real life may be different... that's the nature of this game. :D

Not sure a moderator is checking on this thread, but if so, with this new rendering, us BMF³ thread lifers would like the title of this thread renamed as 'Project Payoff'.
For some reason, it just has a nice ring to it.
I like it a lot.
The exhaust in white stands out a little too much for me, but if it's done in stainless the natural patina over time would be purrrrfect. Black anodize the rear spoiler hinge while you're at it. :D

Exhaust is already white and I like how it (the color) balances with the whites stripe top to bottom, and the black colors balance front to rear. That was my idea anyway and I think it works. I do like the patina idea though.
Oh, and the rear spoiler will be all black. Shawn could only tolerate so many of my changes before just dumping the final render on me as it stood. :D

IT MATCHES THE EXHAUST :bang: NOW DON'T YOU HAVE SOME DOGS TO WALK AND VALVES TO ADJ??:poke:I'll assume you meant STRIPES? From my perspective there's too much distance between the stripe and exhaust which interrupts the flow of the eye. White flares would be interesting to see, not the look he's going for but interesting. The patina'd stainless exhaust outlet would blend with the rotors. Look at the top rendering angle where the white isn't as prevalent vs the bottom. As said still early and I like where he's going with it..........fits the owner very well IMO.

I really like it. My only thought is that the exhaust is so long. Is that proportionally correct? I think if it were a little shorter in actuality that it wouldn't be so distracting.
My car is going to end up looking very similar to this, depending on the wheel selection at the end of the day!

I welcome all these comments for the record. I had thought about the white flares but that's a little too much and I don't like blue, white, and black all converging at the tire. Never did like that many colors there. I just cant bring myself to do black everything with the blue. To me it's like pinstripes.... no thanks. Not for me. Go big or go home.
I think the blue, black and white are just the right sizes and distances from each other. But who knows... maybe it will look like crap in person. :D

Now I have to publicly admit I love the look of the car and DGs overall vision of his project before he drops me in the grease.
Sure if he wasn't such a D.A. he would already have a nasty SB2 ready to drop in it; he'll get there soon. I hope by build # three he'll have this stuff figured out:lmao:
So I dig the stance.
I'm amped about something different on a Camaro that doesn't destroy the original lines of the car and I think the riveted/bolted on flares accomplish that to a T. It's all business with some race heritage so what's not to like. :D
The stripes :headscratch: Well hmmm :whistling: Uh welll.....
I F'ing hate them, Yea I said it  Hate them as I do Eleanors. JMO
But DG loves the stripes and it's his car so that's what matters. Maybe he only loves them cuz he's stuck with them but he's stuck on them. Because he loves them; I feel I have to find a way to accept them. He's obviously a closet Mustang guy.
With the high strung SB2, the wide JRS front track and big rubber, dog box and other goodies this should be one hell of a track car and a really uncomfortable and sucky street car.:D

like the choice of housing for a race car; I see so many cars with housings that are more for an unlimited class offroad truck, so keeping that unsprung weight down is a smart idea. Did you have any camber welded into it? Circle track guys get around -0.5 deg neg in the rear without too much funkiness with the axles. I have heard of around -2 deg but that takes some special parts so the axles don't bind. Not sure if you have messed with any of that.
Have you put any thought to moving the exhaust tips into the rockers (french them in to be even on the bottom with the rest of the rocker)? It would look pretty cool IMO and more like it is part of the car.
There was a 69 Camaro in Popular Hot Rodding June 04 from the NorCal area now that I think about it. I have a fistful of magazines I have kept as inspiration whenever I think about a project and that is one of them so I just pulled it out of the drawer. Big flares, Nascar setup, but had a big wing on the rear I wasn't a big fan of visually. Your rendering reminded me of it and I prefer the look of the spoiler.

I really like it. My only thought is that the exhaust is so long. Is that proportionally correct? I think if it were a little shorter in actuality that it wouldn't be so distracting.
Personally I'd dig into that rocker and raise them bitties up, that way you can get that car low as it supposed to be.
Let me know if you need anything made, I'd like to help where I can.

My chassis/rear end guy (Jake) is what I would call a Pro-Touring guy turned Racer. He is tuned in to both areas - and most people are clearly on one side of that fence I have found. We also talk about the trade offs for parts and specs - I have wanted this to be killer on a track and set up right but be able to be driven to work occasionally.
He did not think any rear camber would be worth it for me so we went with none. We did consider it.
I'd love to put the exhaust into the rockers but that is just more time and money and I love the boom tube as it is. It is quite think actually and I am hoping we can tuck it as nicely with the new torque arm as we had it before. Some cutting should be needed I imagine.
I know exactly the 69 Camaro you speak of... I talked to the shop that did the flares on that car not too long ago as that car is local to me. He doesn't run it much anymore -- he bought a Z06 -- yawn.
That car is definitely on my short list for inspiration as well. My spoilers should be finished soon and they should be pretty cool and still functional. I am not quite into the big wing camp yet.
Thanks

Vince, did you hire any help down there yet? I hear your shop is bustin at the seams!
The car should get reasonably low but I don't want too low. The flares should actually make it look lower than it is and the larger (lower) front spoiler will do its job we think. It has been tested at high speeds on faster tracks than what we have out here.
I'd love to get you involved somehow. Let me see if I can get something worked in.

Had a great weekend. Went to the NASA event at Sonoma Raceway (formerly Sears Point/Infineon -- Happy, Greg?) and hung out with the Life's Good Racing team who field an awesomely quick 69 Camaro that is well known around here. Got some great ideas from that car and talked with the team quite a bit. The car is relatively simple other than the Lateral Dynamics 3 link in there.
Then today Rich and I pulled all the suspension out and got it on the body cart he put together.
Gotta take a step back to take 2 steps forward. Or something like that. :headscratch:

Received another NASCAR part today... :unibrow: Somewhat experimental (for me, not the part itself). I have always wanted to try a locker and now I will do so. Who knows, I may really like it. If not, I'll swap in a Tru Trac.
This is a Roush Yates Detroit Locker Cup Car take out.
Nodular case
3.25 big bearing
Daytona pinion support
3.64 gear ratio (the ratio I was looking for)
Gears REM polished
Gears scalloped/lightened
G-Force internal pump
1350 billet yoke
All this for under $1000 shipped to my door. And looks to be in excellent condition.

This 3.64 rear with my T101A trans will put me around 67-70mph top speed in 1st gear and 150-160 mph in 4th, depending on final redline of motor (figuring 7200-7500).
Also, the Fab53 "Chain Saw" tow hook was a little worn and has been blasted and will be cleared before reinstall.

Negative? Since I don't care about the noise a locker makes and almost welcome it, the only potential negative thing I need to experience myself is the deal on corners of a road course. Some say it's a little sketchy and takes adjustments and getting used to. Most autoX guys love it.

I've said this before, but I chose Jake and went with his full recipe (as close as I can) on his AIX 2nd gen. He spent 3 years dialing it in and did very well in AIX with it, also something that is on my goal list for the next 5 years.

I agree with Dave and Jerry on the rowdy and rough part. When I put the Mustang in gear - you'd think the tranny or something was going to drop out the bottom -- the whole car goes "CLUNK"! And driving slow through the pits - if you let off the throttle - the rear end bangs and clunks... and the whole experience is just the polar opposite of driving something "normal".... which is exactly what I like about it!

Cris,
Does that cooler get much airflow? Tucked up against the gas tank like that, it's hard to see how much air would get through the fins? Or is the cooling in this case less about flow and more just about surface area to dissipate the heat? You aren't running a temp gauge on the diff, are you?

Where does one install the temperatur probe for the differential? I presume it needs to be at or near the bottom to stay 'in' the fluid... I'm not sure if I've seen one before...

Agreed, but in Dave's case, and more importantly, mine :D , we will neither have coolers, at least to start. So I was wondering, if I wanted to run a gauge to monitor the temps to decide if I need a gauge, how I would go about it?

I did some lookin around and drilling/tapping a fitting into the bottom half of the carrier cover looks to be a common method.

That's what I assumed, but I'm iffy on the idea of a sensor hanging out the bottom of the housing. I might have to reconsider one of my gauge choices though if I'm going to do enough road course events. :)

Ok more parts coming in as I wait for the big pallet gets here.
Did lots of research on E85 and came with this guy as my carb builder. Braswell and Hendrick Motorsports have had him do work for them.
http://marksullense85carburetors.com/
It's a Holley 950HP main body with numerous modifications for E85. Due to E85 requiring approx 30% more volume than gas, it has #97 jets in it. The relatively small 1.375" venturi size is intentional for excellent throttle response and mid range torque, and it will be a sacrifice of hp on the top end. I figure I got Rob beat on hp by a mile, so I am going after the torque to make it a sweep. :D

And of course an update here would be incomplete without some Nascar reference of some kind. Got some carbon fiber brake cooling ducts that fit over the lower valance openings almost perfectly. $35 on ebay. And yeah it's Toyota stuff, what can ya do.

Well, I won't have a cooler at this point, so I can't really use it. ;) Perhaps you can?
I think I'm going to have Eric weld in a temp sensor probe on the housing, maybe on the lower front area so that the probe would come out facing forward. The sensor itself is pretty small, so it should fit ok. The housing is out right now for some underbody paint and cleanup before final install, so now's the time. :)

Now that Ron and Rob both have their cars home and plan on doing nothing to them in the near future, I guess I will post where I am at. :poke:
Like all builds this thing has really hit some bumps lately, and add some personal drama to the fold and this stuff can really drag ya down sometimes. We all go through it so no need to elaborate. :snapout:
Biggest bummer for me was determining we cannot use the Hendrick Motorsports billet oil pan that was my favorite piece on this motor (aesthetically anyway). They are made for a 3-1/4 stroke Honda rod Nascar motor and not for my big bulky 4" stroker apparently. After a couple hours of work by Watson on clearancing, the decision was made to stop and just resell it and order a custom pan for my deal. There was a lot of work left to be done and no guarantee it would fit. Here are the dividers taken out.
http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff245/flash68/BMF%20Camaro/DSCF4357_zps51ebc8b7.jpg
A call to Dan Olson Oil Pans was made and in 3 weeks or so I will have my pan. Here is a big block version of what they make and mine should look similar to this except with a front shelf to clear the rack and sub Xmember.
http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff245/flash68/BMF%20Camaro/E13A965E-6298-4506-B9D6-8D02B5657636-1955-0000042393FCB920_zps11012e39.jpg
Not much left for me to do on my end with the engine. Mike ordered some springs and retainers last week to finish up the heads. Everything should be there and ready to assemble by next week minus oil pan. Once that arrives in 3 weeks or so it should be a matter of bolting that on and getting ready for dyno. So I am hoping for end of April dyno session.
A few shots of my bits
http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff245/flash68/BMF%20Camaro/E1FDAD12-61BF-486C-AFF1-2111D787F547-1955-00000423DE19DA78_zpsfaa27187.jpg

On to the car... Have everything for suspension minus axles that are coming soon. Hopefully get all rear parts mocked up soon. Rich's other Camaro project in the shop has drug on longer than planned for a variety of reasons (as with every build) so just waiting for that at this point. The front is completely mocked up at this point. Once the rear is mocked up and we can verify some measurements/clearances that will allow us to work on fuel cell and oil tank location. That is going to be tight I can tell already. :bang:
Got my C&R radiator in yesterday and it's a really nice piece. Excited to clean up a lot of the packaging with the built in oil cooler and PS cooler. Paul @ C&R was great to work with in putting this together and told me the funny story how he originally convinced (after some considerable effort) Kyle @ DSE to convert to his water to oil setup. Kyle came in after his road course session and said the oil temp gauge was broken since the oil temps were so much lower. The gauge was working fine. Could be just a marketing story but I enjoyed it.
http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff245/flash68/BMF%20Camaro/DSCF4353_zps284d684f.jpg
And finally since Mr Fab53 Brett Campbell was up in Norcal kickin ass in Street Machine at GG AutoX he stopped by and we assessed the flare situation (that is Brett's part of this project to manage and execute). After much discussion and measuring, he pulled out his trusty magic marker, some tape, and a metal rod that was laying on the ground and got all technical on us for some template marks. Once I get my wheels ordered soon he will come back up and make cuts and it's no turning back then. The pics tell the story. :D

At some point going to the later model lower support/top cap plate vs. the radiator support flange mount is a great way to go. It lessens the fatigue problems that come with solid mounting a radiator.

That pan is bada$$ - my old steel dry sump pan has a pinhole leak around the tubing and I have been thinking of getting another pan but having a hard time finding one that fits like my other did (it is really short and the pickup tubes sit inside). Anyway, I looked at the Olson website and I do not see that pan - is it custom? If so, I might have to give him a call and see about something similar but have it made to fit into my custom frame...

Thanks. Yes it is custom. I was working with some tight tolerances too and we (Brian Olson) and I put together a drawing and they built it to my specs in 3 weeks. Ask for Brian if you call.
My engine builder is a picky SOB and he has worked with Olson for a looong time.

We mocked up a SBC on the motor mounts and measured from there clearance needed for the rack and the X member. As long as they built it to our specs we should be good. Albeit tight!

Milking a cow. I did grow up in the midwest but I have no experience there sorry. :D
4 12AN lines from pump to pan, and then 16AN from pump to tank (1 supply and 2 scavenge return).
Headers may pose an issue. We may have to modify but I am hoping not. Frame should not be an issue if we measured right!
