The torque arm is going to provide minimum fore and aft support and it's main function is to stabilize pinion angle. I don't see it being a problem having the tabs either way. I can see your point though, it probably would be stronger on the opposite axis since it's preventing pinion wrap.

on the TA is the support rods that run from the top of the housing down to the the TA. I do see what you are saying in that you would use the support rods to set pinion angle. I would assume that Jake set pinion angle before he welded tabs on the tubes and shock/lower control arm mounts.

It may have a sperical bearing, but I would not know.

I actually asked Dave the same question about the torque arm mounts. You can see how my JRS setup did them in this picture (the picture is upside down, so the 2 tabs on the top are where the torque arm mounts):

http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m23/carbuff69/1971%20Firebird%20Formula%20-%20Project%20TOW/update_0126_09_zps2537dbd9.jpg (http://s100.photobucket.com/user/carbuff69/media/1971%20Firebird%20Formula%20-%20Project%20TOW/update_0126_09_zps2537dbd9.jpg.html)

There are bolts that go through the TA parallel to the axle tubes. Here's a good shot of those:

http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m23/carbuff69/1971%20Firebird%20Formula%20-%20Project%20TOW/torque_arm_front_zps0f13b567.jpg (http://s100.photobucket.com/user/carbuff69/media/1971%20Firebird%20Formula%20-%20Project%20TOW/torque_arm_front_zps0f13b567.jpg.html)

Looking at the pictures of Dave's setup, I think that he's going to use the mechanism that bolts to the pinion support to set the pinion angle instead of using the rods that go to the top. I could be wrong, but that looks like what the 2 bolts through the torque arm are for. Also I don't see the tabs on top of the housing for those rods like mine has...

I am curious why Jake changed the mounting points, but I'm sure there was a good reason...

Jake sets the pinion angle into the lower trailing arm brackets when they are welded onto the rear end. As long as your shocks are plum you will be good to go.
My TA is installed the same way Dave, I'm not sure what style mount you have but I have a bracket that bolts to the pinion support to lock the rear end in place also. I know some of his older design used the two bars that Payton mentioned running to the top of the housing. I can see the bolts sticking out of your TA in front of the rear housing.

Bryan, You have the older style. His new design is double shear like mine and Dave's. I am not sure how long ago the design changed but mine was that way originally and I welded the new tabs onto the housing before I installed it. He changed the TA mount to double shear to increase strength.

Thank you. Have not weighed the torque arm itself. The torque arm is mostly unsprung but not all of it. And Jake's question/response to this is: Do you really want to have the torque arm break over a 5 extra pounds that are low on the car and between the wheels and axles? I agree with that response. I am personally not building a 2200 lb race car here with carbon fiber everything and aluminum this and that.

I actually asked Dave the same question about the torque arm mounts. You can see how my JRS setup did them in this picture (the picture is upside down, so the 2 tabs on the top are where the torque arm mounts):

As Aarik mentioned, you have the earlier single shear it appears. And you are correct I am using the double shear with the pinion support bolted. The configuration I have has been tested and proven to withstand countless track days at 700hp level so that sounded good for me.

Also, those 2 bars that run to the top of the housing are super tight in a first gen Jake says. More room available in a 2nd gen as Bryan has, and even Bryan had some work to do to make that fit.

Sounds like we have the same configuration, Aarik. What power level will you be at?

I like that Jake's torque arm has been through destructive testing (unintended, and on the track!) and between Telly's TA, Vinny's 69 and Jake's former (now Vinny's) AIX 2nd gen, he has come up with changes and upgrades over time to improve it and provide options. This is a big reason I preferred and chose this setup.

Yes boy's the arm is centered, however the rear end is offset. If you really study the pics, they are two different housings. Believe me, I tripped on it too.:sieg: Both links are different lengths. They are installed at 30 degrees, even though it's a mind f#*%.:sieg: The arm runs center in sub and, center to body. Used multiple points to find the sweet spot. Shock angle 15, pinion angle neg 2, wheelbase 108.25, panhard bar level, I think we are good, we can adjust from here.:beathorse

Rob the Torino guy had asked me to post about my new ATL fuel cell setup since he screwed up on his order and got the wrong one for his usage. :hello:

I had fortunately ordered mine through a local dealer in the next town over who corrected me and advised me on the proper setup to get (Thanks again Steven).

It's the ATL 22 gallon Sports Cell with steel can, hard molded rubber bladder, -10 pickup, -8 return and -6 cent. The key is the surge tank with 3 trap doors that collect the fuel in the center-rear of the bladder inside the foam cut out area as you see below. Pretty cool little setup. This foam is good to handle E85 as well.

Oh, and my photos are slightly better than Rob's too, so uh, I got that goin for me. (Skip, that's for you).

And since Sieg told me to swap my other lense on my Canon Rebel, the pics are a little better.. I think.

I am posting this so whoever decides to run a cell like this in their car may learn this like I did before they purchase.

You are making the same mistake on that thinking that Rob made and I was about to make. It may seem counterintuitive, but if you are running a single fuel pump the single surge tank and pickup in the rear-center is the recipe for road racing. Ken @ I/O Port Racing in Lafayette explained this to me and encouraged me to call ATL for their guidance. I did, and the tech there said the exact same thing.

The dual pickups in the corners are fine if you want to run dual external fuel pumps but I don't see many of us around here doing that. If you run the duals with one pump and a Y-manifold as Rob and I were planning on doing, I was advised by both I/O Port and ATL that this way would cause you to suck air on the opposite side of a corner. Never a good thing.

I am not playing the weight game yet so I went with the steel can. The alum can in silver finish looks pretty cool though.

My cell has been sitting at my brother-n-laws so I haven't really looked at it. My thinking is that the pickups are y'ed in the tank and I will only be pumping from one fitting at the top of the tank.......:headscratch:
Although I can see how that would be a problem with a 22 gallon tank.....I dont need that much fuel in the car at any one given time so I'm running an 8 gallon to save weight.......I think I should be fine.

The Muttstang uses between 9 and 10 gallons in a 20 minute session there bucko!!!

Either you need some more motor.... or you may be getting pushed/towed in a lot????????????

I agree with Greg, what is that a drag car? I know mine would easily burn through 8 gallons at VIR in a 30 minute session.

Well, not that we should start a fuel mileage debate here on Dave's thread but do the math. IIRC T-Hill is about 2.5 miles long. My sessions are typically 20-25 minutes long with a minimum of 45 cars on the track. My fastest lap time is 2:04.9 and I'd have to see what the average lap times are but would bet by the time I filter through traffic each lap the average may be 2:10?(and thats being generous) Dont know right now.... but 25 minutes divided by 2:10 gives you.....hell I dont know....dont have a calculator nor time right now but lets say 10 laps which is approximately 25 miles. With 5 gallons I'm getting about 5 miles per gallon plus a couple of extra gallons in the tank.
Bottom line, after each session I'm putting one 5 gallon jug in the car.

I was just bustin your balls, I'm a little jealous. My AMX ended up with a 22 gallon cell (you can guarantee it will never have a full tank) due to the really unique shape it needed to be, it was the only off the shelf piece I could find. Most of the events Howell puts on required a cruise, some of which were really long with no fuel near by. I think you'd have to run Jerry cans like on a Jeep.LOL

Yeah ya did, lol. I thought you were humpin' on Gregs leg.

All kidding aside, I was thinking about why Weld was using so much gas and then remembered he runs with the Shelby club. I dont think they run more than 25 cars on the track at a time which gives him a wide open field and to add to that pretty sure he's spinnimng that thing close to 8 grand.

Will run a 20AN Wiggins fitting line from the top and vent to a reservoir in the trunk somewhere.

Since this thread is 1/2 about a Torino now...sigh

...so here's an excerpt on Poteet's 'Talli from the Power Tour.

Green text cuz... well, you know.
__________________________________________________ ____

"My scheduled ride for Thursday’s leg of Power Tour was with Adam Schoonmaker of Skoons Hot Rods. He is doing Power Tour in a ’29 Model A truckhttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/icon1.png (http://blogs.hotrod.com/birmingham-to-chattanooga-ride-along-the-hot-feet-day-hot-rod-power-tour-2013-60545.html#) and I was looking forward to experiencing some old school hot rodding, but then there was a scheduling problem. This other guy, a Troy something, what was it again? Oh yeah, Troy Trepanier asked if I might also like to cruise for a bit in the Ford (http://blogs.hotrod.com/manufacturer/ford/) he built. I called Adam, “Hey dude, uh, you mind rolling caravan for a little while with George Poteet’s ’69 Torino (http://www.hotrod.com/featuredvehicles/hrdp_1209_rad_rides_by_troy_1969_ford_torino/viewall.html)?” Oddly, Adam didn’t mind, so our little parade set off, the Rad Rides by Troy (http://blogs.hotrod.com/troy-trepanier-and-poteets-torino-on-power-tour-2013-60305.html) car in front, Adam, his dad Alan, and their friends Jinx and Fred bringing up the rear.

How do I even describe the ride quality in the Torino? I couldn’t stop smiling. Just cruising at freeway speed you feel like you’re in the NASCAR Talladega that inspired this build, only there’s a passenger seat, and it’s really comfortable. I’d only seen this carhttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/icon1.png (http://blogs.hotrod.com/birmingham-to-chattanooga-ride-along-the-hot-feet-day-hot-rod-power-tour-2013-60545.html#) at shows, where it was immaculate and surrounded by cars straddling mirrors, so seeing it on the road, being in it on the road, and looking out a windshield spattered with insect life, it changed my opinion of the car completely. Something about those matte bronze door pulls fingerprinted from actual use made the car look even better, gave it a solidity that it never had on the show floor. Cars should be used, they look better that way.

As we drive Troy doesn’t miss any opportunities to goose the 429 and the combination of the high rpm roar and the decel pops is so sexy I start to wonder if it’s legal in any state to marry a car. There is a stunning lack of any of the normal old, or even new carhttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/icon1.png (http://blogs.hotrod.com/birmingham-to-chattanooga-ride-along-the-hot-feet-day-hot-rod-power-tour-2013-60545.html#) rattles in the Torino. All you hear is engine and the rocks hitting the undercarriage–which makes me wince, but Troy isn’t bothered. He built it once, and he can build it again. Occasionally we shout at each other about the details of the car’s construction, its Holman Moody gauges and shifter ball, and how well it suits owner George Poteet. We also talk about Adam in the ’29 behind us.”I was happy to meet him,” Troy tells me. “A young guy like that, a new builder, that makes me think of my early years. We used to come do Power Tour every year, each new build. It’s the best way to learn how to design for reliability, performance, and all the little things, like driving position and road comfort.” Clearly Troy has those things worked out in the Torino. I don’t ever want to get out.

Eventually though, he has to split off to stop by a race shop, and I do want to get to talk to Adam, so it’s out of the high-end and into the home-built. I walk over to the passenger side and stare in confusion and the steering wheelhttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/icon1.png (http://blogs.hotrod.com/birmingham-to-chattanooga-ride-along-the-hot-feet-day-hot-rod-power-tour-2013-60545.html#). “It’s right hand drive,” Adam says. “It’s an LS engine, and the alternator went right where the steering box needed to be, so we switched the steering box.” As I sheepishly switch sides, Adam apologizes for the simplicity of his little chopped truck. “It’s kind of hard to compete with Troy’s car,” he says. I assure him that the floor in Troy’s car was just as hot as the bare metal in the Model A, and he offers me a windshield shade to put between my knee and the tunnel, which works quite well!"

So Dave, just a few tech questions....

What installed heights did they set the valve springs at

What were the seat & open pressures of the springs

How much advance did they grind into the cam and where is Mark degreeing it in at (home or office)

What lash are you going with.. Intake & Exhaust

& will you be using bluepoint feeler gauges to set them

What valve face & seat angles did they decide on.. Intake & exhaust

What brand valve & seat grinding machine did they use & with what stone

Is the valve grinding machine for rt or left handed people, is it an air chuck or electric What type of diamond tip do they use to dress the stone

How many times to they dress the stone (if needed) per grinding set of valves

What type of valve guide clearence did they go with & how & what did they use to achieve the clearences..are they installing seals..if so what type, brand and color

What type of honing oil, stones and Tq plate did they use on the block, Who Tq the plate and type of Tq wrench, What Tq pattern did they use on the bolts

How do they load & unload the block into the machine

Type of dolly or cart used to move block from one station to another

Was the block then bolted to a 3 or 4 wheel engine stand, what brand & color engine stand. Did they have the proper length bolts or were washers used, If so ...how many on each bolt

When you visit the shop, what route do you take, where do you park, do you pull straight in or.. what door do you use to enter the building (office or shop door) are you greeted nicely..

Is there snacks and if so...WHAT KIND!! Are you offered a cool beverage to go along with them

I understand Mark loves fishing, Does he share any good stories with you.

How did Mark's engines do last weekend at the Div 6 race in Woodburn Oregon

So Dave, just a few tech questions....

What installed heights did they set the valve springs atchevy?

What were the seat & open pressures of the springs I weight about 145 lbs dripping wet so I guess that is the seat pressures

How much advance did they grind into the cam and where is Mark degreeing it in at (home or office)they said it was a 3/4 cam so 3/4*?

What lash are you going with.. Intake & Exhaust uh, mmm, .....hot

& will you be using bluepoint feeler gauges to set them I only work on the car via the keyboard

What valve face & seat angles did they decide on.. Intake & exhaust I called and asked this and the guy said you are on crack if you think I'm gonna tell you that so you can post it on the web and hung up on me

What brand valve & seat grinding machine did they use & with what stonesee above

Is the valve grinding machine for rt or left handed people, is it an air chuck or electric What type of diamond tip do they use to dress the stone

How many times to they dress the stone (if needed) per grinding set of valves

What type of valve guide clearence did they go with & how & what did they use to achieve the clearences..are they installing seals..if so what type, brand and colorevery time I called back with another one of these questions he got madder. I don't think I can safely go to NC anytime in the future

What type of honing oil, stones and Tq plate did they use on the block, Who Tq the plate and type of Tq wrench, What Tq pattern did they use on the boltsMike is grumpier than the guy in NC so no way I'm asking him this

How do they load & unload the block into the machineMike was complaining his back hurt so I guess they lifted it

Type of dolly or cart used to move block from one station to anotherthis one I've got.... This is a trick question. It hasn't moved in a year.

Was the block then bolted to a 3 or 4 wheel engine stand, what brand & color engine stand. Did they have the proper length bolts or were washers used, If so ...how many on each bolteverything on this motor is rigged so I am sure there were washers, lots of washers. The stand was black I remember that.

When you visit the shop, what route do you take, where do you park, do you pull straight in or.. what door do you use to enter the building (office or shop door) are you greeted nicely.. if it light out Mike makes me next door so it looks like I'm just going to McDonalds. If it is in the evening I'm allowed to park in the back of the shop behind the race trailer in a dark spot

Is there snacks and if so...WHAT KIND!! Are you offered a cool beverage to go along with themMike said nobody ever eats in a shop. Was he lying to me?

So Dave, just a few tech questions....

What installed heights did they set the valve springs at
:secret:

What were the seat & open pressures of the springs
My seats are Corbeau FX1 and the springs are Hypercoils 700#/500#

How much advance did they grind into the cam and where is Mark degreeing it in at (home or office)
Since I don't know who Mark is (does he build LS engines?) and I believe the grind is decaf

What lash are you going with.. Intake & Exhaust
Is this like those eye lash extensions on the women of the night in my old neighborhood? Need more clarification

& will you be using bluepoint feeler gauges to set them
Is there another kind? (said Jack Nicholson)

What valve face & seat angles did they decide on.. Intake & exhaust
The angle of the open face roast beef sandwich is congruent with the max amount of Texas BBQ sauce (not from the Salt Lick) slather on it.

What brand valve & seat grinding machine did they use & with what stone
MIKE says "next question"

Is the valve grinding machine for rt or left handed people, is it an air chuck or electric What type of diamond tip do they use to dress the stone
Again, next question.

How many times to they dress the stone (if needed) per grinding set of valves
220... 221.... whatever it takes.

What type of valve guide clearence did they go with & how & what did they use to achieve the clearences..are they installing seals..if so what type, brand and color
Clarence, is that you?

What type of honing oil, stones and Tq plate did they use on the block, Who Tq the plate and type of Tq wrench, What Tq pattern did they use on the bolts
Standard 30 weight oil (preferably Quaker State) and some ball bearings.

How do they load & unload the block into the machine
With a Ford

Type of dolly or cart used to move block from one station to another
Proprietary

Was the block then bolted to a 3 or 4 wheel engine stand, what brand & color engine stand. Did they have the proper length bolts or were washers used, If so ...how many on each bolt
2.5 to 8 weeks

When you visit the shop, what route do you take, where do you park, do you pull straight in or.. what door do you use to enter the building (office or shop door) are you greeted nicely..
I grow straight to the shop... as the crow flies... because I can.... and I will

Is there snacks and if so...WHAT KIND!! Are you offered a cool beverage to go along with them
There's no time for food and snacks at this shop

I understand Mark loves fishing, Does he share any good stories with you.

What angle were the heads milled at

Any porting and polishing

Was it bored and stroked by MIKE personally

Balanced and blue printed

Did they debur and destress the block

Did MIKE use a good seasoned block

Where the lifters lightend

Block Lifter trued

Decked with a centering deck plate

Oil holes chamFORD, reamed and screened

That's all the questions i got
