Naturally, I will give the purple ones a pass.
Dangit. I didn't even think of that. Brilliant.
I might be the only guy on this site who covers up his billet with thin wall aluminum.

True, but due to my resourcefulness, I bet I got it for a 1/4 of what you paid. :unibrow: And don't give me that Ford vs Chevy parts availability excuse.
Okay I had a similar Matt Alcala situation the other day at Watson going over the motor teardown and inspection of my SB2.
Nothing is good and everything needs something.. of course.
#4 cylinder has a pretty deep score.
Bad main cap walk.
Crank thrust no good.
Wrong bearings.
Wrong piston ring package (napier).
Steel lifter sleeve (wish it wad bronze bushed).
Standard SBC cam core (may go to 50mm BBC size if there is room).
And then there was..... ok at this point I just pulled a Weld and said "just fix it."
There was some good news. They loved the dry sump stuff I brought over and it was the first time Mike didn't tell me the stuff I brought to him was crap or inferior. He even brought Ben (Watson) who does all their billet and sheetmetal manifolds over and showed him the Hendricks pan. They loved it. :woot:
He's gonna send the crank out, do calcs on everything and then we'll decide where we go.
Oh, and he said the head gasket on this motor was the largest he'd EVER seen......
.120.
And then there was..... ok at this point I just pulled a Weld and said "just fix it." Whatever it takes as long as you'll guarantee me it will kick the snot out of this: http://www.lateral-g.net/forums/showpost.php4?p=442467&postcount=1

^ low, low, low, blow.
How bad is the cap walk? Possibly because too to little thrust clearance?
Also what block is it?
But dont feel too bad. i nearly Sh*t my self when I looked at my crank. huge hole, is huge.

God D@mn, I feel for you. I keep forgetting our cars' engines both crapped out the same weekend at El Toro.
This is turning into a race to see who bought the biggest turd, and it looks like you're winning since your new engine is a pile.
Dude, I am sorry to hear about this. I know how expensive these things get, and how all kinds of little things you forgot or didn't know you had to buy just magically seem to end up on your parts list.
I'm glad to hear you just decided to "fix it" like Weld. That is what I decided to do today as well, and everyone tells me I won't miss the money once I'm driving, so get driving soon. We need to find out if you have more power than Rob.
Matt
p.s. Shipka has a little 5.3 you could just throw in there.

I got a cracked block 406 that will slide right in there big daddy. No worries.
I for one like the purple wiggins setup---it adds some style points.
Sounds like GW needs to come back in on this project. Put some Intro's on it and he'll be interested again.

Dude it sucks but in the end you won't spend much more if any than if you built it from scratch and it will be built right.
You do know the availability of Ford Sidoiler dry sumps is next to nothing right?

He's gonna send the crank out... said the thrust bearing was toast... like Rob said everything should be usable... it's just a matter of more time and more money.
Block is Dart Little M. Mike will do a soft hone on it he said and redo the mains and it should be good.
He did like the crank overall though. Need to weigh it but it is pretty damn lighweight.

Yep I read your post and didn't even wanna post mine. Rather spread out our misery. It always can be worse and like you said we think we are getting a deal of some kind and it often bites our arse. At least we are both doing what we need to and taking it to the right people to make sure it gets done right.
If we have the clearance for the 50mm cam then we get to choose the cam specs. Then I have a new vested interest in some extra hp. :unibrow:
5.3 LS? That is short a couple liters. Oh and it's an LS and wouldn't leak. :D

That 406 is a trooper. Wont' die. Like that daddy long leg spider in the corner of my room I just can't reach.
I knew you'd love the purple fittings. Race car.
I actually have some renderings of my last Camaro with some Intros on it... wait, did I just say that?

Yeah yeah yeah.... I might just say fvck it and turn it up and go 13:1 and big cam to win the $20 bet. That would be justifiable wouldn't it? :D
Streetable? Don't worry I will drive it more than Todd did his PT car on the street.
Matt@BOS
10-27-2012, 09:13 PM
I'm sure you will drive it on the street more than Todd did with his car. You don't put your car on jack stands and pull out the black rubber gloves at the first sight of a drop of oil. You're probably more like me. When I fired my car up at the gas station close to Doug's house after El Toro I had to wait 5 minutes for all the smoke to clear so we could see well enough to pull out of the drive way.
My engine should be done in 10 days so I think you're winning the race to the most broken parts. (my famous last words).

Oil leaks? Those are badges of honor for me. Or something like that. As long as it's on Doug's driveway and not mine.
Oh yeah smoke and all.... love that... it gives me a reason to tell all the onlookers and questions-askers that "no, it's supposed to work like that... thanks though.... carry on." :D

Yeah I shoulda known.... it was a good chance it would turn out this way.
Yep I brought it to Watson for a reason... if I didn't allow them to do their thing what would be the point right?
Yep I brought it to Watson for a reason... if I didn't allow them to do their thing what would be the point right?
Exactly  As customers we have the desire for big power and reliability but can't easily accept the expense associated with it.
The more stories I read about people trying to get the most for their money (natural human trait) the more I understand the prices of Watson, Mast, etc. Building motors right has to be a tough sales job and somewhat thank-less business in many cases from my observations over the years. Think of the number of hours they spend educating people who realistically can't afford their product.
Then comes the customer obligation to properly maintain what their desires built which is somewhat like going through a buffet line when you're starving and then having to eat everything you piled on your plate. :)

That sucks about the engine but at least you know you'll be able to beat on is good once you get it back.
I've never seen a main cap walk issue. Did Watson show you the issue or do you have any pics of it? I'm interested to see what it looks like.
You also mention the wrong rings and bearings. I assume they where sized correctly, what did he say saw wrong with them? Since I'm building up my engine I'm interested to know more.

Yep. He showed me some of the issues while we talked. No pics tho.
Rings were not necessarily wrong per se... just not good for my application per Watson. They were napier 2nd rings. They want to switch those out.
Bearings he said were mismatched. They were a mixture of hard and soft. A throw together job it appears.

yes all my rear links will be nickle'd along with my control arms.
its nice because if the material cracks so does the nickle unlike paint and powdercoat. plus it doesnt add any weight, well maybe a couple grams the plating is roughly .002" thick.

When I looked into nickel plating it was god awful expensive. In fact, I couldn't even really get the guy to give me a price. I think it was Advanced Plating somehwere in the midwest ? AT first the guy said he didn't even do nickel plating and then I mentioned several high end cars that said they had work there and he admitted they will do it for but spent the rest of the call talking me out of it. That was before I even told him what and how much I wanted nickel plated, so he didn't know I was a low roller LOL.
How/where/price are you getting things nickel plated ? Don't mean to hijack Flash just curious.

Well done. I know you'll always come thru.
No worries Preston. I was seriously considering the nickel but I was committed and powdercoating in progress.
Im getting ichy just looking at those. lol. Can't wait to see these long arms of the law on the 68.

OK something of an update but only ran the ball up the middle for a 4 yard gain I'd call it. But it's some progress.
--Pistons are back and skirts coated
--New oversized pins are in
--Crank is being keyed and the bad snout has been repaired, should be on its way back from Marine Crankshaft soon
--Oil pump rebuilt and dyno'd and en route back
--Larger Braswell carb arrived and once final engine specs (cubes could change) I will have it sent to Braswell for freshening and road race float install
--New Dart main caps - they are out of stock or something so Mike is waiting for those to arrive so he can get working on the block
Should have my hands on the control arms from Jake on Friday. Looking fwd to that and starting to get things laid out for mock up then off to powdercoat.

All remaining parts needed are shipped from manufacturers to Watson.... he should have everything by end of this week and can start working his magic.
Hopefully it results in a Sideoiler Killer.
He agreed on a reasonable target for a motor completion and dyno by end of January ... assuming no more hold ups or red flags.
He kinda liked our idea (Our being Rob and me... well, mostly Rob) of running 2 different ignition setups like Nascar does... only not for the same purpose.... our purpose would be to switch from Tune A (pump gas) to Tune B (Sideoiler Killer) with the toggle switch. I thought it would be a cool idea.

How is a golf ball different from a Ford?
You can drive a golf ball 200 yards..
Whats the difference between a Ford and a shopping cart?
A shopping cart is easier to push...
A man pulled up next to a little girl walking home from school and
said "If you get in, I'll give you a lollypop." The girl kept walking.
Following along slowly, the man said "Come on and get in the car with
me and I'll give you two lolly pops."
She kept her eyes on the
sidewalk and continued on her way. The man said "Get in with me and
I'll give you this whole bag of lollypops!" Finally, the girl turned
and said "Look daddy, YOU built a FORD, YOU ride in it!!!"

Since the torq arm X member is so close there will be a 180* "hoop" welded to it that holds the mount. Jake has done it before and is sending us the piece. Should work pretty slick and kill 2 Fords... I mean birds... with one stone.

Only thing(s) I'm smoking now are some old PS2s and Fords. Picked the Camaro up from the engine builder a couple weeks ago, and it is now making 585/565 on a safe baseline tune, on a loaded chassis dyno. We plan on tuning out a few bugs and looking for power once it's got a few miles on it. It already has more torque than Rob's motor so I'm not too concerned about things right now.
Ordinarily I would feel bad about derailing DG's thread, but we are talking about cars and that is pretty special around these parts.

How much power is that SB2 going to make again?
Todd, I'm not really a video person, but Chad at Bangshift is, and was interested in doing a write up of the "real" intake manifold when it eventually goes on. When that happens is largely dependent on Daves dyno numbers, or Rob's chassis dyno numbers.

Since final compression ratio and cam specs are possibly up in the air, I'll go with this.
Minimum 725 (I'll be disappointed with anything less)
Target 750+ (This should be doable given just the dry sump upgrade and other things staying the same)
775-800 (If things get a little wild with compression and cam)
But don't go holding me to this. :unibrow:

Well kinda. Our game plan has been to mimic his AIX 2nd gen car he ran for 3 years before selling to Vinny. I am trying to not reinvent any wheels or be a pioneer at this point. Almost all specs and tuning will be derived from that 2nd gen.

Took this quote above from Stielow's thread and I try to follow it every day. Most of the crap is not post worthy but it moves the chains forward.
2 little but important things for instance I've been working on (researching, calling and emailing about, etc) lately are the spark plug cooling holes found in Bowtie/SB2 blocks but not the aftermarket blocks. Most, but not all, drill these holes into the block at a 7 degree to help with detonation.
Also looking at running a vacuum limiter/regulator and installing on my intake valley plate or the valve cover to LIMIT my vacuum for street driving. The Weiss 6 stage pump is a vacuum pulling monster and too much vacuum can be a problem on the street.
I did score this set of 7 Nascar I-Core oil lines off ebay last week. Near mint condition, some of them barely look they were used. Probably paid 25 cents on the dollar for this batch vs new.

I am a decent trend setter at buying junk motors.
I need a SBC to LS currency converter, how many LS engines would that have bought now?
This thread should be made a sticky or put in a hall of fame section for being a project thread and the majority of the post are just us ribbing him. Hardly actual progress posts. It's almost approaching Payback post count. LOL

I have thought about the LS to SB2 exchange rate and I'm still barely ahead if we are talking about a full monty LS7 with all the goodies probably. Thanks for reminding me. But I think an SB2 will still sound better. :unibrow:
I dunno about the view count... I think it's about the same handful of people ribbing and viewing. :D

I'm starting to think Intocarss, composmentis, and bad matt are really just Dave trying to make this thread interesting and boost his thread views.

The only thread count DG cares about is how much his Sérgio Mendes sport coat has...

I am trying to not reinvent any wheels or be a pioneer at this point.

After 4 weeks Dart's main caps finally showed up at the machine shop. I was actually there asking for the direct phone # to Mike's rep at Dart so I could call and the UPS lady walked in and dropped them off.
Things start moving now and should go pretty quick (hopefully).
If my calcs and assumptions (based on seller's info) are close, we should end up with static CR in the high 12's or low 13's. And I have an idea I introduced to Mike today about running a certain pump gas for this. And it's cheaper than 91 octane. :unibrow: He's never done one before, but he said he's open to it once we get all the head, piston and related critical measurements verified. He said "it's just fuel." :unibrow: Hopefully this idea works out...
Oh, and before I brought this up Mike was his usual self talking about customers in general who don't have a great plan and end up changing things (he was talking to me about me :D) and that they "need to be slapped in the face sometimes."
Crank is back and weighed in at 49#. Pretty svelte I thought for a 4" stroker.
Was there a Torino around here somewhere lookin for trouble?

That's awesome Dave I'm getting excited
For you.Are you gonna continue to run Spintechs behind this motor too?
Reason I was asking is I think ima go that route on mine and wondered which ones to get I'm gonna use 3" throughout. Thanks for any feedback,
Shane

Yeah, but not as much as those anodized purple thingies.
Technically at this point in the game all he got was feet for an antique coffee table.
:woot: :woot: SBC train is leaving the station! :woot: :woot:

I've been gone for nearly 4 months---I was able to read just the last page of posts and feel completely caught up. It's exactly how I remember it.
Congrats on the main caps---amazing how long race motors can take to compile isn't it? Were you starting to wonder what lunar material Dart had to scrape off the space shuttle before they could tool those things up for you? 4 weeks for main caps---that is absurd.
Todd could've whittled those up on his ban saw/bench grinder in like 3.5 days.
