Sorry. Bad habit I have Trey. :shakehead:

Posts like mine are likely why only 37 out of 103 psychotherapists recommended this thread to their patients.

Up to 37 already? Don't worry guys, the rest will come around eventually.
On a serious note...I think about the occasional internet surfer who stumbles across this thread via a search of 68' Camaros...makes me smile.

How many people on this entire forum actually go out and beat on their cars on the track? 10? I post more pictures of me fixing what I broke than I do what I build! I love this thread, page after page with no car pictures! LOL

You should post more of your track day outings and work. I love the homebuild, budget, and racing you do with you Camaro.

So before the "love" gets too deep I've got a serious question. The center frame section is new, are the rear rails? CorteX originally installed the watts and TA, is that all getting reworked? I know you've been in discussions with Ron Sutton.

Ok back to our regular shenanigans.
Happy New Year DG! What shops have you got in mind for this year? :lmao:

DG,

It looks like you are using the JRS axle housing, possibly modified to use floating brakes. I can't tell from these angles if you kept the JRS coilover and LCA mounts or replaced them?

And I presume that crossmember is the torque arm mount? What is the front mount going to be? Rod end, or will you use the 'football' style that JRS provided?

Finally, I spy a little Ron Sutton influence with the adjustable Watts mount in those pics. I really like the one Eric and I installed!

Keep 'em coming!

That is a JRS supplied housing. But it's Payton's. We traded since he is using a different one now and his original piece was more "matched" to what I am now doing.

The coilover and LCA mounts are a mixture of parts. Some of the simple stuff from Jake was just fine to use. Same with Cortex.

The X member is the torque arm mount yes with a removable section to allow for trans removal. The length of the new TA mandated this. The Cortex or and possibly the JRS piece would not have. Not sure what the front mount will end up on yet.

And yes Sutton is involved very much at this point. His watts link adjuster is such a neat piece.

I have just told Jim to use what he approves of in strength and design, or scrap it and build/source if otherwise.

TA design and install should be next. Then attachment of subframe to the "tank" :stirthepot:

Well -- given the effort (which was to relabel my signature).... the results are commensurate to-date. In other words - zilch. This isn't a hot rod site - only a couple guys around here even know what one is... most have never driven one... and since it's not a real racer site - "the rig" might be a bit of overkill for most people that have one car. :bang:

The link adjuster will be the primary rear suspension tuning tool for a TA setup to adjust rear RC.

This thread is about building a Track car... based in principal on NASCAR and TRANS AM race cars.... because everyone I know has a tube chassis street car with a space for a child seat.... LOL

No I will NOT be building a Camaro or Corvette. I have too many 'projects' going right now - House - '40 Ford Pick up - Alex's '51 Pick up... and thankfully for me it's not about $$ but about attention span and ability to concentrate and COMPLETE (had to toss that grenade here) stuff before embarking on another epic project. When I do turn the turret and take aim... I hope it will be super interesting and I will post a thread.

Thanks man. A general goal is just as much clearance as possible. The front frame and oil pan are basically even and the plan has always been to have a belly pan that at least protects the engine and all the dang oil lines going everywhere. That should still play. We'll know soon enough as that is coming up next.

Awesome! I know it adds complexity, especially with maintenance, but there's just something about having a belly pan or rear diffuser that screams I'm serious about speed. I think it would be right at home on your and Preston's cars.

Yeah my car is a flat bottom front to rear with a diffuser.

I did have to create a cutout to account for droop of the 3rd member, and I also have a cutout for the bellhousing which drops about 1.5" below the "ground plane".

That makes it better than nothing but having those holes probably reduces the benefit quite a bit.

In my case the floor is the flat bottom, and then I just have dzused on panels front and rear. The panels are alumalite which doesn't make the best material for a splitter but it works great for these kinds of panels.

If you design the car right its actually pretty easy to do this, they key is getting the exhaust out in the rockers so you're not trying to encapsulate it.

If one was serious about tracking the car you would want to extend the flat floor out beyond the rockers anyway but that's just having fun at that point.

I don't know what good its ever done me except to encapsulate oil leaks ha ha.

Awesome! I know it adds complexity, especially with maintenance, but there's just something about having a belly pan or rear diffuser that screams I'm serious about speed. I think it would be right at home on your and Preston's cars.

The belly pan (like a lot of cool fab) doesn't always get to be enjoyed due to being hidden once the car is assembed. You know it's actually more of a skid plate here I guess but a small one is a must here and has been planned since the engine was built and dyno'd back in 2004.

A diffuser is very striking and obviously functional if done right (really dig Alcala's on his Mustang) and that may be something added to Jim's punchlist before it leaves NC.

I like the 1x2--I've been getting into that lately myself. So much seems over-tubed these days . . .

Well we were planning on doing 2x4 and 4x4 tubing but then Chad called it a tank so I got sensitive and self-conscious and we cut that down to 1x2. :peepwall:

I don't know what good its ever done me except to encapsulate oil leaks ha ha.

Ha. Good point. I'll try to remember that.

I like the fact that when I look at the background some of the tools and shop fixtures in the background are likely older than some of the forum members, and most likely pre-date internet forums altogether. Specifically the toolbox, the two welders and a wooden stool.
They may be old, but they still serve their purpose well.

I respect that and it speaks volumes about the shop being established and having a sense of frugality. That's my $.02

Looks like full floater rear brakes, but that's probably been mentioned 100+ posts ago.

In the grand scheme of shock building, Ron's prices are actually very affordable. My shock builder from my circle track days, who is now Chase Elliott's crew chief for his Super Late Model cars, charged me much more money than Ron charged me for my sauced up RideTech shocks, which work VERY well by the way. Money well spent, indeed!

"semi" is probably giving me too much credit Preston.

They were originally wider as you probably realize, but Cortex cut the rear mount up 2-3 inches to gain header clearance there. We agreed on that at the time. It is what it is at this point. Can't take too many steps backward with my forward progress these days.

Flash68, what are your thoughts on the wedge bolts on the coilovers? I've only seen this once before on a non-stock car (Mike Dusold's Camaro) and there isn't much info out there. Honestly, I don't know much about stock car suspension technology and obviously, this isn't a circle track car. So, I'm assuming y'all are adapting this device to make something easier, or more durable, or package better.

I'm guessing it's an easier way to corner balance without adjusting the shock stroke/range (like would happen when adjusting with the coilover)? So, you basically just turn the jack screw whichever direction you need to go and the shock body rotates but the shaft stays fixed to the lower mount? Do you have to run thrust bearings on the coils?

What you're seeing on these cars ... Dusold's, Dave's & many others ... are a product I sell in my Build Your Own Track Car" Catalog HERE (http://shop.ronsuttonracetechnology.com/downloads/get.aspx?i=312479). These Track-Star Coil/Over shock adjusters are on page 22.

You are on track with the "why." They allow us to adjust the car's ride height & do corner weight adjustments without affecting the spring adjustment ... so the amount of shaft showing is always the same (optimum). This is especially helpful when you have a certain travel in mind & it takes most of your shock travel to achieve it.

For example, we may have a 4" stroke shock & want 1" for extension (my minimum suggested) and 3" for compression. If this is the case, the shock needs to have 3" of shaft showing at ride height ... and without these Track-Star Coil/Over shock adjusters, we couldn't adjust ride height or corner weights without messing up our shock travel capabilities.

The threaded aluminum jack bolt has 8 threads per inch, so it's easy to fine tune ride height & corner weights. It comes 6" long, but in many cases we cut them down to around 3" & redrill & tap the 7/16" NF bolt hole in the one end. This 3" length gives us over 2" of shock adjustment, which is even more ride height adjustment (depends on motion ratio).

Some of my clients run lock nuts. Most don't. I've never had one turn & come out of adjustment in years of racing.

Yes, we typically run either delrin washer type "bearings" between the spring & spring cup ... or thin Torrington bearings. But we do this to allow the spring to compress with encountered twist-bind. The Jack bolt is not the reason, as the shock body doesn't rotate when we turn the jack screw. The upper shock mount (U-shaped double shear mount) is free to turn independently of the jack screw.

Any questions, just ask!

Thanks for the explanation, Ron! It all makes a lot more sense now. I really like that design and it seems like it'll allow for the damping to be very consistent.

Ha, missed that! Awesome car.

Mr. White.... (Reservoir Dogs comes to mind there).... I've been fortunate to hook up with a great group of people on this project here.. with Payton's Camaro already paving the way for some of the things we are doing on mine, plus Jim's Nascar background and Ron's diverse racing background, I could not be happier with where things are going here.

I loved the simple adjustability of the jack bolts to manipulate ride height (if necessary) when going from track to street and back.

So how is your car coming? We need some updates from Terry... :rules:

True that. I can definitely see a benefit there.

I personally don't see much street time in the future with my car as the streets in Houston require 4WD, at least 8" of ground clearance, and lately a snorkel... I bet it could make a highway run on TX-130, though. COTA to Lake Travis? 5th is 1:1 so the gear whine shouldn't be too bad...

My car is coming along. The guys at Vorshlag have been hard at work on it the past couple of weeks and their shop seems to be getting more and more work this season. They have recently been getting into the exhaust, trans tunnel, final welding, and starting on some interior panels. I'm sure Terry will post an update soon but I'll let him do that when he's got some time. I will say, there are some exciting things coming together currently and some very generous vendors supplying some high quality kit.

It's been a little while since I've been on here posting...I'm going to get better about that this coming year. I see you're making some progress with the Camaro, good to see Dave. Also, congrats on the new addition to your family! Our daughter just turned a year old and combine that with our 9 yr old son, we are always busy. I've coached baseball and football this year, so get ready...haha. Enjoy the kids, they grow quick!

Beautiful car, the attention to detail is very apparent.

Thanks!

Wheels? I've been following this for like 15 years and I don't remember any wheels mentioned....

I just wonder what color it's going to be.....:popcorn2:

To jog your memory.

Hey Corey - thanks!

Yeah I hear ya on the sports and business.... my son just "graduated" from his first sports class/season... he started it before he was 2... which just boggles my mind. :headspin:

Why would a car that lives on jack stands need wheels?

That's why I really like you Gregor... you always bring that missing logic to the discussion.

:confused18:

If you apply the old cliche 'All show no go' wheels make perfect sense. :welcome3:

I LOVE Jim Pettigrew's work. He's got some serious skills.

I agree about Jim's work! Question about the Sweet PS Rack: By Everything I've read over the years, it appears the inner TRE's are a little too narrow for the track width. Is there something special in the FE geometry that eliminates bumpsteer" with the rack offset? Thanks!
