All this suspence and you're going with Mike @ Watson racing? I for sure was waiting to see a Summit crate eng pic HA HA
In all seriousness you are in great hands, Mike builds some great stuff (as you have seen).. My boss "Lambeck" raced against Mark for years.
At one time Mark and Bob teamed up and Bob drove Marks' white SS/BM National Record Holder 1998 OLDSMOBILE ACHIEVA and set some records with it too. (we have pics with Blackstone/Lambeck on the door) Then Bob bought the car as a roller from Mark. The racing world sure is small one.. Congrats Dave. And if you've never been... make sure you're there for "Dyno day" it's a blast!! I still get excited everytime we dyno one
BTW If you're still looking for used SBC parts let me know what you need.... we got shelves of new and used stuff and maybe we can help. Rons seen it lol

Yep. 1998 Super Stock World Champ. I believe that car also got 'Best Engineered' Award. I could not stop staring at it. My favorite part? The lightened crank. Man I want that for the centerpiece on my kitchen table...

You guys are frickin hilarious.... thanks for helping make this thread the polar opposite of the tech-heavy and tuning-heavy thread of Todd's. :D
Dropped off some more parts today and solidified most of the build plan today. The builder/shop is Mike Blackstone @ Watson Racing & Engineering in Concord, CA. An awesome facility to say the least. 26,000 sq ft full of top shelf parts and machines, yet is a small mom and pop type shop with only 3 employees including Ben Watson the owner. Pete is the general machinist. Not sure how they crank out so much killer stuff but they do. 10, 12, 15, and 18 degree heads on the shelf, blocks of all kinds, and they do Pro Stock, Stock Eliminator, circle track, road race motors... not much they don't do.
Mike has already spent a few hours with me schooling me on 18 degree stuff and engine building in general. He's a super nice guy and already treats me like I've already spent $20k with him before.
Mike is a big fan of Keith Dorton (as am I) and is a big proponent of the 394 SBC, so that's what we are going with after telling him what parts I already have and what my intentions are. Here's my parts list, most of which has been acquired over past couple months:
-PBM iron race block, 350 mains, 4.155 bore, .903 bushed lifter bores, splayed caps on all 5 mains, bore cam tunnel to BBC cam size of 50mm
-3.625 stroke crank (looking for one)
-6" rods (have a set - may use, may not)
-Dished piston to achieve no more than 11:1 (Mike will spec and order)
-GM Bowtie 18 degree heads (being checked and flowed by Mike soon to verify 373cfm flow sheet provided by seller :unibrow:) (ebay)
-GM Bowtie 18 degree intake (ebay)
-Jesel shaft rockers 1.6/1.6 ratio (ebay)
-Morel/Roush Yates .903 roller lifters w/ .180 offset intake (ebay)
-Stainless 18 degree 1-3/4" stepped to 1-7/8" headers w/ merge collectors (they're a tad rough, but scored these on Craigslist in Nascar country for $350!)
-Holley 830HP (I bought awhile ago off Yellowbullet but not sure if will be used)
-Solid Roller spec'd by Mike
I am leaning toward dry sump, but Mike suggested and also likes a wet sump with an external oil pump for what I have and on a budget, so I need to look into that.
When it's all said and done we are shooting for near 700 hp at no more than 7000 rpm on 91 octane. Mike says the 18 degree heads are so damn efficient that they don't need the cubes the 23 degree stuff does, but they can be a little more tuning sensitive, another reason it will be dialed in correctly. And they like a lot less timing than a 23 degree I guess - like 32 degrees. I plan on him dyno tuning it in his shop after assembly. You get the dyno room for the whole day whether it takes 3 hours or 8 hrs to get her dialed in. :woot:
I gotta thank our resident good samaritan and butt of many jokes, Greg Weld. He offered to sponsor me for some stuff after I blew up at RTTC and I am greatly appreciative. He supports this niche a lot thru his time and money and spreads it around to help many people. Ok enough about that guy. Thanks G-Dub. I'll put your decal on my car now (see below). :D
Ok here's the pics so far. Hope I did not disappoint.

That motor is so you and your car!
I imagine you've thoroughly enjoyed the quest researching and acquiring parts and getting to know the builder.
Looking forward to this one.
I started that post before midnight but I get distracted looking for my next Nascar part on various sites. :D
Thanks... and you're dead on -- I love the part of researching and educating myself on what's out there and looking for good deals. Others spend their hours in the garage - I spend mine online learning and finding cheap stuff.
So this is nascar. :unibrow: Sounds like a solid plan for your Winston Cup car. I'm surprised you couldn't find a wealthier sponsor with your crew chief and driving skill.
That baby should be all you need to have some fun.
No, if I went Nascar on your ass I'd be 850 hp like Mikey Maier. :unibrow: This is my "street" version. Pump gas and a milder cam so it actually makes good power below 6k rpm.
And I think I did find the right sponsor at the right time... you have seen his whopper of a Toter Home thread haven't you? That wasn't a coincidence!
Congrats Dave this is awesome, such a hardcore build. Let me know the next time you stop in at Watson, I drive through Concord M-F.
Thanks dude. It really is meant to be a budget 18 degree build, and I am getting most of these parts for incredible prices. Dimes on the dollar.
I'll let you know next time I go and see Mike... probably a few weeks or when some new parts come in.

Thanks Jerry. Good to know Mike and Watson are well known in the racing community. I know Todd talks about how professional and well run the Pettis shop is, and I don't doubt it, but I think any of you would get that same feeling walking into this shop and seeing the parts, machines, and motors laying around. Best of the best parts in there. I am the el cheapo guy in there now. Surprised my application was accepted.
And yeah I can't wait for the dyno day. The Day of Reckoning. :D
Cool. I'll send you a list of parts we are still looking for. Thanks

I like the sound of that. That is shaping up to be a helluva weekend.
Depends on how lightweight and cost.... Mike has a 3.625 light crank in stock but it's $1500. That's too rich for my blood and overkill for my app. Looking for something cheaper and doesn't have to be feather weight. Might go with a Callies Compstar. Mike likes those for the price.
He likes all the obvious good brands of stuff -- Bryant, Carrillo, Oliver, and Callies -- hates Eagle stuff... he will not install it.

They should be fine but I am just thinking is it worth it on this motor to save just a few hundred bucks. I need to call Mike back and discuss it with him.
Thanks for the offer Greg. I need to cut you off before you own 51% share of this motor.
No excuses... and no mercy. Kobra Kai Dojo.
Dave - Whats the debate on the rods?
They are CAT rods. My early research shows not a lot of love for them. I need to have Mike weigh them too. Again, I don't need feather weight here, but I don't want a boat anchor like Todd's car and motor either.
To be continued..... :lateral:

Just to clarify... The spare cranks I was posting to Ron about is our 28 -35# Comp eng stuff. Won't work in your app. I did PM you about a crank Bob has for sale. Remember there is nothing wrong with going 'over kill' with the rotating assembly (think longevity). Build the bottom end as light & strong as you can and make the Horse power with the top end ;)

Might look into Pankl: http://www.pankl.com/Engine.395.0.html
They own the Carrillo brand. My take on Pankl is American V8's are childs play for their engineering. KTM has a stake in the company and uses their rods and pistons in some very high-stressed high reving single cylinder 4-strokes.

Talked to Mike again today and he said it's my call on the rods... so I in the meantime I am looking for some 6 inchers with the 2.0" rod journal (said Honda was a little too small here - would prefer 2.0" for this setup). One regret I have on my engine was building it with Eagle/SCAT rods and crank. Not that they haven't performed, I've had no problems. But I want to support American manufacturing and companies as much as I can (used a DART block and AFR heads at least).
There was the cost of course. I don't know what other people's experiences are,and maybe this was more with the crank then the rods as I already had the rods for this buildup, it seemed like it was going to be a nominal 6 week lead time to get a crank (which means 10 weeks in the real world). Whereas SCAT and Eagle both had the crank in every configuration ready to ship (ie juggling main and rod sizes and balance options).
Some people seem like they spend years buying parts and putting together an engine. I tend to pull a damaged engine and want to get it back in the car asap. My machinist already takes long enough to get it out the door as it is, and he will barely glance at your engine after teardown until all the parts are sitting on the build table. I just couldn't take spending MORE THAN TWICE as much for a crank and then also having to wait who knows how long (BTW this was for a 427 Windsor with small 2.5" mains and chevy rod journals, zero balance).
That was my experience anyway. Next time I replace rods I will go USA and name brand - If I can get them! Maybe I just didn't talk to the right people or try hard enough but seems like they all had a long lead time.
Greg since you are on this thread (well, you are on every thread), do you have an engine builder you like in the NW ? Who do you plan on taking your Mustang engine too ? PM if you want to avoid thread jacking.

I have special jacking privileges grandfathered in.... granted to me by Todd back in the day.
Dale Green Performance - Auburn
And Tony Odo on the Mustang engine since he built it and I got a lifetime of engine rebuilds from Charley when I bought the car. That covers basically bumper to bumper including wreck repair.

I hear you and won't argue your support of American products, and I don't wanna tangent into anything political or too controversial, but I have no issue with buying overseas stuff if it's decent quality. With regard to machine work - that's where the Americans come in and make sure it's up to snuff. :D
I am a business owner and I feel that if someone somewhere else can do better than me (or just as good) for a better price, then good for them. Asian and overseas products get a bad rap for a lot of stuff, but our dear Americans churn out a lot of junk too unfortunately. Like anything... caveat emptor.

The forged Eagle stuff is nice, strong stuff. However, they are rarely within spec. Ask any machinist, they will tell you. My Eagle forged crank had to be blueprinted due to it being so far out of spec.

So then --- what part of that is "nice"?
Don't answer - it's rhetorical question. Just saying' --- that if you buy parts and have to completely rework them -- then the prices are "cheap".... so you might as well have paid for a good piece that IS nice.

The forged Eagle stuff is nice, strong stuff. However, they are rarely within spec. Ask any machinist, they will tell you. My Eagle forged crank had to be blueprinted due to it being so far out of spec. 100% correct... Eagle is not machined here, It's done in China. I ran SCAT stuff in my 1,000 Hp n/a 540 drag eng, because they are machined in the USA (and my budget) . They are still going strong after 7 years and 300+ runs seeing 8,200 rpm and some of those were with a 250 shot of N2o
Can't stress enough, That with the proper parts, clearances, balancing and and a very very clean assembly and routine maintenance is the key to making an engine live I do also agree that as far as "longevity" the China stuff won't last as long as the high $$ stuff
At the end of each season at the very least I changed valve springs, Lifters (rollers) Timing belt (Jessel) & rod bolts (ARP 2000) Every other season was bearings and rings if needed
And for what it's worth some of the big brand Co's do have their lower level $ stuff made in China but it's machined here
Disclaimer.. I am in NO way pushing China products and I am in full support of buying AMERICAN but sometimes you can't

I can think of some expensive rods...Crower stuff can get pretty astronomical. They are, per the analogy, the Megan Fox of belt notches.
Ahaha...thx Steven! Maybe I'll rename my car Megan :D I used Crower billet Max-lites. At first we ordered Oliver road race rods. When they arrived we weighed them - 630 gms each IIRC. So we backtracked to Crower. Final rod weight was 580 gms. I was all over that.

I agree Jerry. My PBM block was cast in China but it is machined here... and will be checked over and have final machining done at Watson. 2 American layers of work after the Chinese layer.

I'm finding out cranks are in short supply these days unless you are very flexible with what you want. Got my order in for crank and rods. Going with medium to light weight stuff and small journal sizing. Mike didn't wanna do Honda journals (1.888) on this setup for longevity reasons.
Scat F43 lightweight 3.625 stroke, small journal (2.000), approx 44 lbs
Callies Compstar 6" H-beams w/ ARP2000 bolts, approx 590 grams
Heads are in the "cylinder head room" today and we should have flow and chamber numbers soon. Piston design and order will follow (Diamond first option, CP is backup). Mike likes the "boxed Nascar style" pistons he said for added strength and they apparently last quite a bit longer. He listened to me when we talked because his recommendations are consistent with the longevity theme I stressed.
Cam design will follow as well. Bullet is Plan A, CamMotion is Plan B.
Was really close to getting some dry sump parts together, but decided to KISS and stay wet sump and an accumulator. It works for many here and I didn't wanna make this a longer and costlier time than it is already. Dry sump will be V3.0 in a few years.
With the slight backlog at the shop and the slow delivery time for the crank (6-8 weeks), this is probably looking like a 10-12 week ETA from now to be safe. So that means June 30 @ Thunderhill ain't lookin good. I'll try to get a shakedown in July sometime as August will be hectic (wedding) and worst case I am shaking it down while passing Todd on the straight at Buttonwillow in Sept. :unibrow:

Have a local guy who is considering buying what's left of the 377 so that would be nice to get it all sold and done at once.
I've come close on sourcing the carb for this motor. I've learned a lot lately about carbs, venturi and throttle bore sizing, CFM ratings (they are worthless), etc. from talking to a couple custom carb builders (KB and Braswell). I am looking for a 1.41 Venturi and 1.75 throttle bore carb if anyone has one laying around. :unibrow:

The bad news... I need new springs, retainers and keepers, but I was kinda factoring that possibility in when I got the top end so damn cheap. He likes PAC springs and the titanium stuff.
Mike will run some more numbers and plug into his Cam Doctor but he's thinking about 266ish intake and low 270's exhaust duration @ .050 and peak net life in the .675 range. He is most concerned with the mid lift area of .200 to .600 and these heads do pretty well there for 20+ year old Nascar crap.
He also specs his cams with the Ford Cleveland firing order (again, Nascar) and apparently it's a 4 cylinder swap deal. First I have heard of that, but he's the boss here.
He said the weak link in my parts is the intake and he'll have to do a little work with it so it isn't such a restrictor it's hurting the combo. He'll put the heads with the intake back on later toward the end he said.
I'm having a lot of fun showing up at the shop and talking and learning from these guys. It's a lot of info to take in and retain for me but I learn some things each time I talk to or meet with him. The uber technical workings are not my strong suit. :D
I may pony up for some valve covers from them. Not sure yet.

We can compare dyno numbers in June.

Funny. My heads are like the weakest of all the heads sitting in the engine shop I'm at. :D It's like the saying goes -- try to buy the ****tiest house on the nicest block or nicest neighborhood. The rising tide lifts all boats.
I've learned flow #'s are only a small part of heads, as you know I'm sure. Velocity is just as important or more. Still, for the money my top end cost I am stoked to see the results. I'll put them up against anyone on a dollar per $ basis. I guess I should wait til the dyno in case we don't break 500.
Your cubes are gonna make incredible torque... and incredibly hard to manage. :D
Yeah we are shooting for peak power at 7000rpm. If it comes in at 7200 I guess that's okay. It'll be built right so I'm good with that. Rods are rates to 7500 rpm and 700hp I believe I read.
I'm more looking for that sweet flat torque curve from 4000 up that Mike says he loves about the 394 combo.

Well we got some changes here fellas. When building a motor from scratch with a professional every change no matter how seemingly insignificant I'm finding can have a chain reaction of changes. :willy:
2 things we discovered just today that are key are that the heads have a combustion chamber of 47.5 cc (I was told 55 by seller). Ok that's ok and where Mike figured they would be in his experience with these heads, but it changes his comfort level of maximum efficiency of a dish piston required to achieve my targeted 11:1 compression. Remember, this is a STREET car :D.
He wants no more than 20 or so cc's in the dish to maintain "efficiency" and to do this we need to shorten the stroke a tad. That actually works out fine since I discovered today my crank that was ordered 2 weeks ago on a 6-8 week delivery estimate is now 4-5 months out.
The good thing is I only will lose a few cubes (about 7) by going to the 3.562 stroke. AND that stroke is supposedly easier to get and I should be able to get my crank here sooner to possibly speed up this build time.
I've also been researching my GM 053 intake that came with my top end that was supposedly ported by Reher Morrison. Doesn't appear that is the case and Mike says during our chat today that this intake is by far the weak link in my system and could cost as much as 50 hp. Ouch. Unacceptable. Talked to him about viable options (NOT the 18 degree intake on his shelf with 40 hrs of porting that I can have for $2000) and I brought up a 2 piece Edelbrock intake I saw on ebay yesterday that was ported by Wilson. The ad listed the port size and it was nearly dead nuts to the ports he measured on my heads. He said grab em so I got the intake for $350. Quite a bit less than $2000.
So, a couple curveballs today but I like where it's headed now. :woot:

Well I got the top end so cheap that just the heads were almost worth what I paid for them + the intake and Jesel shaft rockers. So I knew I factored all of this in and I am still ahead on that. I honestly just think the seller passed on info he was told by the guy he bought them from.
Dave - Sorry to hear about the heads and crank delay. Hopefully the Wilson intake is as represented. What crank are you using?
Thanks but I like where this is going now and my crank was just ordered today and will be here next week instead of 4-6 more weeks. I upgraded to the Callies Comet for a couple hundred extra bucks. Better finishing than the F43 I am being told and weight is at a svelte 43 lbs... 10 lbs lighter than a Compstar.
Stroke is set at 3.562 and with 4.155 bore makes 386 cubes.
Todd, I'm wondering how heavy that Compstar BBC crank of yours is... might need to upgrade that.
Is shortening your stroke going to take away your quench area?
Piston and decking will handle that.
Piston is being designed from scratch and Mike has a grasp on this (I don't claim to). Unlike many engine builders (assemblers) that call up XYZ Piston Co. and say tell me what I need, Mike specs it all himself and calls in the order to his specs. And we are building a motor he has done many times over so I have utmost confidence. Just trying to learn as much as I can in the process.
Good updates DG!

Haven't dynamic vs static with him, so I assume he is not concerned as he is voices all his concerns very openly with me. For a "budget" 18 degree motor he has been great to work with. Basically the cam design will come last he said and he will make the power be exactly where we want it. Every time I ask him something about a change or this or that, he says don't worry we will make it work where we want to when I design the cam. Again, new process for me to build a motor with such planning and project management. I'm lovin that.

That's a cute carb. A pair of those would look good on my intake.
:D
Yea it's a whole different ball game building a motor rather than assembling. I'm an assembler. I've put together a lot of motors but when it came time for my project and started buying parts that cost real $$ and were hard to find I found someone who really knew their stuff. I remember when I started my build I though I knew exactly what the motor should be. What I have now is similar to what I planned but will far exceed what I would have built. Your stoked on working with your builder. I know the feeling

 Nice.
It's not that small for a 386 cube motor according to the custom carb tuners I've talked to recently. Could it be bigger? Sure, but I stressed maintaining throttle response and low end crispness. In CFM terms (which is the wrong way to rate or look at carbs I've learned) it's probably between 800 and 900 if it was flowed. That's not small to me. My venturi and throttle bore sizing is consistent with 400 inch motors making 650-700 hp. Got that from 2 sources.
Lemme guess, you have a combined 2000 CFM on your double dueler. :D :willy:

Hey Dave,

Good question. Sure there will be some more heat, but I have an aftermarket block now that should provide improved cooling and my radiator is a decent one that should handle the load. We are convinced the overheating issue at RTTC was a direct result of the prolonged detonation sustained. I really should have mixed race gas in the tank for protection and I will never do an event without throwing some in there in the future. It's fairly cheap protection but nice to not require it when street driving or even an autoX event I figure.
The oil cooling system seemed to be working and again until the detonation presented itself, thats when water and oil temps shot up. I recall I have read there may be a slight aid in oil cooling from the Accusump? Not sure if that's true or how significant that could be though.
So I hope no changes needed in this department. Thanks for asking.

Dave, the Accusump should help a little with oil temps, as you will be benefiting from increased volume which will help dissipate heat a little. I've been toying with the idea of adding one myself, but I'm not really sure I need it since I don't really plan on long sessions on big tracks. Are you adding an oil cooler as well? I know you were considering a dry sump at one point. Any more thought about that. You can definitely keep the oil temps consistent with a dry sump system. Plus the advantage of crankcase vacuum you can add some hp.

Yeah it makes sense the added 3 quarts would help temps. It was either dry sump or accusump for me, but I wanted this modding session to be easy as possible. Dry sump presented many more changes ($$).
So you don't think you'll do any track days? Ahem, Buttonwillow! I mean, a session is a session and they are long and while my previous motor was not worth a lot of money, my new motor is and yours is big $ so I think it's cheap protection. It's pretty easy to plumb in and only a few hundred bucks for everything.
Oh, oil cooler was already done last year. Decent sized Earl's piece with -10An lines and the Mocal 180* thermostat.

I know you were considering a dry sump at one point. Any more thought about that. You can definitely keep the oil temps consistent with a dry sump system. Plus the advantage of crankcase vacuum you can add some hp.
Yeah I was very close to pulling the trigger on a system but a couple things changed my mind. Most of the nice pans I was looking at were too deep for my stock sub. So likely in the future there will be a different chassis under this car (more like a 3 year plan) and a new motor with dry sump. I made sacrifices for power (compression) and oiling (dry sump) on this motor, but I plan on phase 3 in maybe 3 years being a high compression dry sump Nascar type motor, something like Maier's Roush Yates Nationwide motor. But that's later... but I do consider where I think I'll be in 3 years to help make decisions today.
I definitely was liking the added hp of the dry sump as well. I estimated 20-30 hp over a wet sump based on my research.
Is your FE dry sump?

Dont forget to flush your oil cooler and lines. Hate to see any gremlins from your last escapade wind up in your new motor. ;)
Good call. We'll be sure to do that.

Is your FE dry sump?
Yes. :D With the RS chassis the typical road race pan would have my motor up higher in the chassis. The dry sump allows me three things.
1 Better oiling
2 Motor lower and farther back since my pan will be 3.5" deep max
3 Vacuum in the crankcase for more hp
I am trying to decide between Dailey and an integrated pump and AL pan or Aviad and a steel pan with external oil lines.
