No worries. This thread is a quagmire for sure. :hitaxeonthehead:
It was not a cup camshaft to begin with. I purchased the motor used and we decided (were forced to) fix or redo quite a bit. The cam that came with it (Bullet) was in good shape and had pretty decent specs (but not ideal) so we are starting out with it. The plan is to upgrade the cam after my 2-3 year refresh (depending on usage) and rev it higher. But first thing's first....
Here are the specs:
264/274 @ .050
.390/.390 @ lobe
.663/.663 net lift with 1.7/1.7 rockers
113 LSA
This cam with the motor mostly as is (minus the head work, dry sump, E85) "supposedly" made 730 something hp below 7000 rpm and 610 or so ft lbs at around 6000 rpm.
We will know soon enough.

Wow, our engines have a lot of similarities ... but with unique differences.
My engine makes 730hp at 7000 rpm & 600# of torque at 5600rpm ... cam is 265/274 @ .050 & .648"/.630" net lift ... and also runs on E85. But mine is 405" on 23° degree heads.

But with my head work and mods I should be upper 700's I am guessing? If I hit the magic 800 I will be stoked.

Ha now that trumps my cat avatar for sure.
Mike doesn't chase hp on the dyno he says.. and the dyno is for making sure everything runs properly. We will just play with timing, jetting, and carb spacers.
Another of his lines is "it's gonna make what it's gonna make" :rules:
so hopefully that = FE power + a lot more. :bigun2:

They are Dart CNC ported heads with 227cc runners. This engine is very "developed."
The original incarnation made 673hp & 572#. 9 days on the dyno, 5 camshafts, 6 rocker arm combinations, 5 intake manifolds, 3 sets of headers, 3 carburetors, 2 days tweaking the fuel curve later ... whew ... and it now makes 731hp & 599#.

Sure!
I need a few more details ...
Carb or EFI size in CFM
Compression ratio
Rod length 6.0" or ?
Are the heads SB2 or SB2.2
Are the cylinder head intake runners 286cc or different ?
Header primary diameter & length
Collector diameter & length
Cam degreed at ???
Is cam a roller or big lifter flat tappet?
Also: Is this a 4.4" or 4.5" bore center block & head combo?
If you don't have it all, just get me what you can.

Do they dyno and tune?
Mike Blackstone (Watson Racing) has known Rick Santos (S&S) a very long and Rick is one of the few guys Mike trusts in the bay area. Mike has a dyno but because mine will run E85 he prefers to dyno it over at Rick's since his fuel system is more beefed up and set up for a lot of the alcohol motors they do over there. Makes no diff to me. I am in good hands.
Sure!

Carb is Holley HP950, but as you know Ron, factory ratings (especially Holley) are not reliable with respect to cfm.
Compression is 13:1
6.0" rods
Heads are SB2.2 worked by Curtis Boggs @ RFD in Virginia. I am guessing you know of him or have heard of him. Peak is 410-420 cfm at .900 but around 395-400 at .700 closer to where my cam net lift ends up. Low and mid lift numbers are strong. The work done was intended for road race (vs the Nascar CNC programs) and not max hp at high rpm.
Header is stepped 1-3/4 to 1-7/8 to 2.... 3.5 collector. Do not have length. It is a Profab Nascar type take off I believe.
Do not know cam degree number.
Cam solid roller.
Block is Dart Little M -- not a Bowtie/SB2 block.... so that must make it 4.4" I am guessing.
Congrats on getting the engine ready for the dyno, Dave. Here's hoping you hit 800
Thank you! Me too. :)

Rich has been working on the fuel cell cage and I am really happy with how it's turning out. Just needs some top bars/straps and powdercoating. I gave Rich the "blueprints" for the cage found in Circle Track magazine. It uses about 50 feet of 1x1 square tubing. Heavy and a little overkill but about as safe as I can get I figure.

Well this is only 2.5* actually, which is what Jake specs for my setup. I don't consider that too extreme. But maybe that's part of my problem... since I don't consider this car too extreme. :peepwall:

Carb is Holley HP950, but as you know Ron, factory ratings (especially Holley) are not reliable with respect to cfm.
No worries. We're just ball parking here anyway.
Compression is 13:1
6.0" rods
Heads are SB2.2 worked by Curtis Boggs @ RFD in Virginia. I am guessing you know of him or have heard of him.
Yup.
Peak is 410-420 cfm at .900 but around 395-400 at .700 closer to where my cam net lift ends up. Low and mid lift numbers are strong. The work done was intended for road race (vs the Nascar CNC programs) and not max hp at high rpm.
Very similar to Busch/Nationwide numbers back then.
Header is stepped 1-3/4 to 1-7/8 to 2.... 3.5 collector. Do not have length. It is a Profab Nascar type take off I believe.
Cool. Also probably a Busch/Nationwide piece.
Do not know cam degree number.
Cam solid roller.
Block is Dart Little M -- not a Bowtie/SB2 block.... so that must make it 4.4" I am guessing.
It probably is.
Thank you! Me too. :)
My calcs show 818hp @ 7000 rpm & 645# Torque at 5800rpm, but I had to guess at lot of stuff. Now lets go see what it really does. :)

30 degrees timing
Brad Penn 10w30 (18 quarts total!)
108 psi oil pressure
both runs from 4900 to 6600
604 ft lbs @ 4900
608 ft lbs @ 6600
peak of 640+ somewhere in between
764 hp @ 6600 and still climbing

Best numbers of the session:
795 hp @ 7200
643 ft lbs @ 5700
600+ ft lbs from 4800 to 6900
30* timing (tried 32* but roughly the same output)
No jet changes
1" 4-hole spacer
after warm up oil pressure settled at 30 psi @ idle
WOT oil psi still kinda high but Mike likes it
Mike is happy with the conservative timing & fuel numbers and thinks that gives me plenty of leeway for any future operator error. :D
I give you the FE Eater... turn up the volume if you'd like.

If that doesn't give you a bit of a puffer, nothing will. Looks like the pulls went to 7500, which is short shifting that engine. LOL Hell, that thing should last forever keeping the rpm's down there. I really can't wait to see how the car puts down that much power, should be a hand full.

Hey Dave ! Congrats on getting her done ... dyno'd ... and making big power. :trophy-1302:
When you come off your high ... later this year ... I have questions.
a. Do you know why the dyno sheet shows two fuel lb/hr columns (A & B)
b. The BSFC #s are utilizing Fuel B Lb/Hr ... ask him if these #'s are accurate?
c. Did you guys run any EGT or O2 sensors? If yes, can you post those sheets?
d. Did you guys do any carb tuning?
e. If yes, did you tune any air bleeds?
I can tell you guys ran her "safe" by the BSFC #s. You remember when I said mine was "developed"?
I think your baby has another 25-30 hp in her up top ... but you'll never need it anyway.

Yeah nothing like seeing your :G-Dub: being pulled to 7500 right before your eyes. Well this cam is pretty small and I really was never planning to rev it past 7000, but I guess 7200-7300 is in order now.
Handful is right.... I can always throw a cam/rocker/carb change in it and hit 900. Like I need that.

Thanks Ron!
a. I forgot what Mike said on this, but Rob reminded me, that A & B are primary and secondary fuel flow readings... he knows where he wants them and said these #'s were right there
b. I will have to ask him this... how can you tell they are using Fuel B?
c. No EGT and no O2. I will have O2 bungs welded into my collectors for in car gauge
d. Nope. He liked it where it was he said.
e. No, he just played with the ide mixture screws (they were bottomed out as delivered I guess)
As you can tell, Mike doesn't like to spend a lot of time tuning on the dyno. His philosophy is to get it running safe, make sure no leaks/issues, and pull it off and do the tuning in the car.
Yep, he tunes on BSFC and said he knows what he is looking for. He liked it a little rich here.
He said there is more power in it also. He also said I could take it somewhere else in the Bay Area (Top of the Hill, Panella, etc) and it would hit 830+ hp. He said Pro Stock motors are 100 hp down on his dyno and mine is prolly 40-50 down. I don't really care. (Ok yes I do - I wish it hit 800 :D) But you get the point.
And you nailed it... this is as much power as I need... for now. :)

Fair question and I've been planning for safety upgrades since last year. I already have a fairly complete stout cage. The only thing needed to really "complete" is an under dash bar and then tying in the front down bars to that. I am working with Brett on a plan to try to do that. It's not for certain but I'd like to.
6 nozzle Fire suppression already purchased last year.
6 point camlock harnesses purchased recently.
Sparco suit, gloves, boots

Nomex socks and head sock

I don't think his motor is as capable of inducing the caliber of cartwheels your's could. :sieg:
Both of you have probably exceeded the performance levels of '68-'70 era Trans Am cars and you're exceeding the current Vintage Trans Am car performance level..........I'd be looking at the level cages the vintage boys are running and see what you can realistically adapt to BMF V.2.
I am completely in support of what you are doing and don't want to sour the hype of this moment in any way as the car is over the top impressive to me.......but you've somewhat built the perfect storm with the new grip and horsepower levels...........your safety is more important to me than the car.

I appreciate it, Momma, but if you look around our site, I have more safety items (on the car and on person) than 95% of those running. And I am adding more.... I'm serious about it and heading in the right direction.
And Gaetano is damn fast for a pretty simple setup. I think 140 on the straights that he can hit is enough to do cartwheels -- isn't any caliber of cartwheel bad on a track? :mock:

Good points. I am going to raise the front of my seat bracket to get a better angle and body position -- something I wasn't happy with before. I have the Corbeau sliding seat brackets for now, but I do like the side mounts and figure they are stronger.
Also have considered a Woodward type column.... I do have the factory collapsible column for what's worth. I know, it ain't close to a Woodward but it's better than nothing and what many have.

I would like to get my cage checked out and evaluated at some point. The previous owner took the car to a fab shop and asked them to build him an SCCA cage... I just don't know exactly how well it passes muster.
Greg's cage is very nicely done it appears.
If Brett is able to complete the front tie-in, which I am sure he is capable of, then I think I will be pretty satisfied with my cage front to back.

If anything I will probably follow as closely as possible the rules & regs for AIX. I may try to run this car in that class sooner or later, but of course I will be at a major disadvantage in the weight category. Everything else is looking decent and Jake's subframe is an approved subframe (the class requires stock subs or an approved aftermarket bolt in version)

Ok I have been playing with my new MSD 6AL-2 programmable box and trying to set up a fuel curve here. First time doing this and wondering what you guys think.
On the dyno we ended up with 30* timing (dist locked out).
Since I will run this on the street occasionally and thought programming some retard down low would help at start up and low speeds/off-idle.
Figured the idle will be in the 1100-1200 range so I started the curve at 1400 rpm and have it all in at 3000. I've some curves where the retard is linear from zero up to 2500 or 3000, and then I have seen some like this where it's a "flat lined" constant retard for an rpm range before getting up to all in at 2500 or 3000.
What do you guys think?

With that combination, you won't bog it down in gear below 2,000 or so. If you do, you will want less timing to prevent detonation.

There is no guessing here on timing. We already tuned for timing on the dyno. And you know his rep. He isn't a schlep. (Hey that rhymes)
This is just for the start up and low rpm retard. I am not putting in MORE timing. We are already running at least 2 degrees less advance than what we tested fine on the dyno, but since power difference was less than 1% 30* is where it stays. Add to that E85 has much better anti-detonation characteristics than gas and we are in a pretty conservative safe zone, all things considered.
I already discussed with Mike that I was going to put some retard in down low with my programmable box and he agreed it was a good idea.
That being said, some smarter guys than me on Corner Carvers encouraged me to increase the timing from 0 to about 800 rpm and then have a constant retard surrounding my idle rpm (300 rpm on each side of it -- target idle is approx 1100) and then at 1400 rpm start pulling out the retard (advancing more) in a linear fashion up to 3000 rpm. Again, smarter guys than me! Here is where I am out now. They encouraged me to add a MAP sensor if I really start driving this on the street a lot but only time will tell how much that is.

In drag racing with a timing lockout ----- we put a coil interrupter (Susie can probably explain the whole interruptus thing to you) so you could spin the motor --- no timing in --- lift off the switch and let it fire. That, of course, is just for a start sequence.
The motor in the Mustang has a normal timing curve and idles about 1200 but doesn't "like" anything but "punch it I know the road!".... so I have no clue about street driving your monster race car -- 'cause I just wouldn't do it. :>)
GregWeld

The reason I said your dyno operator should have worked with you on the timing is because THAT IS THE PLACE TO DO THOSE THINGS.... he is able to put a load on the motor -- run it at an rpm -- watch all the parameters of importance.... and dial it right in. Including fueling.
I know that the TOTAL timing was set at the dyno --- but the curve is every bit as important.

That's now how Mike rolls with his dyno. He gets it running good and safe and then says tune it in the car. Many people tune on a dyno but not Mike. He says too many conditions (loads, etc) change from dyno to car so it's a wasted strain on the dyno.
This is just getting a base curve to start out.
Plenty of people (like you in your tracky car) just run a locked out full advance setup just fine. We ran it on my last motor and it was great for 2 years.
MSD probably had not invented the programmable 6AL-2 box back when you were dealing with your coilus interruptus. :action-smiley-027:

The Digital 6 has a 20 deg retard for starting so no worries about cranking. The Dinosaur method GW mentions if for motors back in the day of the FE.
I have to look at the MSD instructions so I don't know if the 20 is subtracted from the rpm at cranking or total timing. I say leave 20 in it below idle, or 10 out if you want to look at it that way. As people have told you this stabilizes idle by quickly building some torque if the motor falls below the desired rpm range bouncing it back into that range.
You have an efficient combustion chamber and high compression so flame travel across the piston shouldn't be an issue as evidenced by only needing 30 deg of total timing. I don't think you need a bunch of timing down low like some of us with archaic combustion chambers.
For your idle rpm start conservative at 20 out and leave the linear curve you have from there to 4000 for starters. I don't know enough about your SB2.2 but I would think you don't need to be all in as early as 3000 because of your compression and cyl head efficiency.
Once it runs in the car. You can add timing in at idle with the car running and get a feel for how much timing it likes at idle by listening to the motor. The idle quality will get better as you move timing up and then start to get choppy when you get to much timing because the cyl pressure peaking too early will be fighting the piston traveling up the bore. I would do this little exercise with the idle set a little on the low side since it will make the changes in idle more obvious.
Keep in mind this is all based on a proper AF ratio. You are running fat which requires a little more timing that if you were dead on. If you optimize your jetting you will have to go back and tweak the timing again. Your chassis dyno told you a peak all in timing #. Some old school ear tuning can get you pretty close on what the motor wants at idle. From there you can get pretty close on when to bring it in. JMHO
Your car is relatively light and your gearing and tire diameter are helping to minimize the load on the motor. That along with the preigniton resistance of E85 reduces a lot of concerns of hurting your motor with to much timing.
But as mentioned you don't need a bunch of timing to ensure peak pressure is reached early enough so I wouldn't get to aggressive with the timing without running it on a chassis dyno.
When the motor is running in the car you can dial in the carb and ignition on the chassis dyno and that will tell you how much timing you really need.
Where is Ron in Nor CA? He has a "developed" SB2.2:headscratch: He'll probably call BS on my advice.:underchair:

The Digital 6 has a 20 deg retard for starting so no worries about cranking.
Where is Ron in Nor CA? He has a "developed" SB2.2:headscratch: He'll probably call BS on my advice.:underchair:
The Digital 6 (6520) does have the start retard built in. The programmable 6AL-2 (6530) does not. You program it exactly how you want it. I have the 6AL-2 and I think you do too? :computer:

Ron in Norcal has a developed motor yes... but it's a 23 degree not SB2.2. His developed SB2.2 would probably make 100 more hp than mine. :sieg:
Not a bad photo there, Mr Forvette. :mock:
I'm just planning a little road trip.... and I thought I would stop by and say Hi. :innocent:
So how'd that trip go? :stirthepot:

Now that's a Ford I would allow in my garage.

But of course this one trumps that.

When Brett and I stopped by to grab my engine on Friday, Mike @ Watson Racing just happened to be dynoing a 650 cubic inch Pro Stock motor.
The sound made the hairs stand up all over my body. The hairs did stand up when my motor was on the dyno, but that was for different reasons. :G-Dub:
1400+ hp
1000+ ft lbs
Enjoy.

Ok I have been playing with my new MSD 6AL-2 programmable box and trying to set up a fuel curve here. First time doing this and wondering what you guys think.
Yep you're right :waveflag: , got me there, there isn't a switched start retard like on the 6520. You can just take 30 deg out below 400 that will make starting easy. Fix that on your timing map will you.:bitchslap:
Now explain to me where in the instructions the MSD controls adjusts the carb jetting to control the fuel curve?:headscratch:

I too, noticed the "fuel curve" and just left it alone.... but I had started loading the ammo....

Ok so I was guided to make one more change for the initial map and to add some timing at idle speed. Here is where I am at now. Will be fun to play with it on start up and see how it reacts to some small changes, if anything.

I hope your start up goes much better than mine! :sieg:
Congrats on 3000 post too.
