Don't listen to these chumps. You'll be driving your protouring car through the Wendy's drive through soon enough. You may need your pit crew to rebuild it after such a strenuous exercise, but that's the price you have to pay to out run Gaetano.

CorteX is all over this build! With that in mind, I looked at the CorteX Racing site today hoping to find shop pics of a Camaro lurking in the background... but given that CorteX is a Mustang specialist shop... they've no doubt taken great pains to hide the CamoFord build.
Re: Gaetano/Weld lap times....
We do have a great time bantering back and forth in these threads and on the text train. But I'll repeat what I've said many times. It's one thing to run spec cars and see who's the best driver... but it's a ridiculous exercise to try to compare different cars. I say this for those that haven't tracked or AutoX their own cars... and then if they do... try to begin this comparison. It's impossible. That's why they have CLASSES in racing - so the cars are basically built to rules and specs to keep them as even as possible. We don't do any of that. Ours are all very very different. If you want to know what your car is CAPABLE OF - get one of the best drivers on here (Pozzi/Hobaugh/Maier/Finch et al) to run it for you. Then that's the time to beat in YOUR car.
A buddy of mine just added a Lotus 2 11 to his garage. He's a Porsche instructor and has tracked for years. He is copying my set up - which is copied from the Lotus Cup Unlimited Champions set up. I guarantee he will be many SECONDS faster than me. He's a far more capable driver. That's MY time to work to in that car.

Rear suspension UPGRADE well on its way. This is what will be the first GM version of the Cortex Torque Arm and Watts link. Oh, and it's made for a 108 inch wheelbase for those keeping track.
Old JRS torque arm = 30 lbs
New Cortex torque arm = 18 lbs

Once they finish up the watts link and fuel cell cage adjustments, they'll move on to LCA modification and header/exhaust fab.
Regular updates should be more the norm now as I will be going by there every 2-3 weeks. One of those perks of working with a local shop.

Dave,
Any thoughts on whether you will be able to adjust the pinion angle with this setup? With my original JRS setup, the 'old' style that used 2 rods to triangulate the housing to the TA, I could. When we added Jake's plate which bolts to the pinion support and then to the TA, you lose that ability unless you egg out some holes.
From what I can see in this picture, it looks all welded in that area, so is there any adjustment I can't see?
Looks like it's going to be a nice setup!
Vegas69
01-08-2015, 07:54 PM
I would assume they set up the angles and fabricate around it. It "shouldn't" need adjustment. Unless the vibration at freeway speeds on the Griswold family road trip bothers the little one. :D

I realized when I got home I didn't take pics of that. Dangit. The Cortex TA is 4-5 inches shorter than the JRS piece so the mount and Xmember were indeed modified from before.
I haven't really paid attn to the lower links in ages and I can't even tell you if they are in the stock spring location... you might know more about Camaros than me actually.
And yes Filip is a great guy and I really enjoy talking and working with him. And yes he can flat out drive.

We hope and plan to. I brought up the remaining pieces today and the guys there really liked the setup.
Dave what are they doing to the LCAs?
Great to see some progress on this Beast
We decided to "straighten" the rear arm of the LCA to gain 2-3 inches of header clearance since it doesn't change any of the structural integrity of anything. We agreed it was likely easier to cut that than to make the NASCAR headers go around that unnecessarily "bulky" area. Plus I told them I'd rather cut up a JRS part than a NASCAR part if it had to be one or the other. :sieg:
I should have pics of that next I go up.
Right on Dave. Great to see this project moving forward again. I'm counting on you to wrap this up soon.

The multiple track days is a no brainer... but I cannot be held responsible for you and Brian living together in a trailer in Simi Valley.

No adjustment is correct. They set it and forget it. The whole shoot n' match is pretty close to what Filip runs on his '66 as that has the same 108" wheelbase.
So Bryan, when you swapping out that JRS TA? :popcorn2:
Thanks fellas... I think I am on a good course.

So Bryan, when you swapping out that JRS TA? :popcorn2:
:) If I were going to swap it all out, I would go all the way to a 3-link instead of another TA. Too many challenges between exhaust routing and sway bar mounting and setting driveshaft angles. Of course I liked keeping the back seat on TOW.
Given the race car status of BMF :poke: , I'm a little surprised you didn't jump all the way up to a 3-link instead of the TA. Since you are making the change, any thoughts on that choice?

I am not sure if I would completely agree with your implication that a 3 link is going "all the way"... it's debatable I guess, just like about everything else on this site. :)
I have a lot going on in the back seat area right now anyway, so it could be a challenge if I were to "go all the way" but I haven't looked into it to be honest. I bought into the torque arm idea 3 years ago based on its simplicity and Jake doing well with it in AIX.
Cortex has been very successful with their torque arm (and other parts) so when I decided to go with them it was part buying into Cortex/Filip and part the mechanism itself. Filip is a real engineer by trade as well.
Contrary to popular belief I am not building a GT-1 car (do they have lic plates? :peepwall:) and I don't plan on being the guy tuning and adjusting a million things between every session. Not interested in that.
Here is Sutton's brief explanation and I maintain it should suit me well. Of course... are these cars ever done? :)
Torque Arm suspensions are also common as a factory style rear suspension in some cars. They are the simplest of the designs, allow a high degree of rear end articulation & can take high shock loads from hard launches. They can be made "a little" adjustable, but typically offer less adjustability than the other designs, as far as controlling the front Instant Center, rise leverage & anti-squat. If designed well & installed as instructed, these make a great all around suspension for the person that doesn't want to tune much.
3-links are very common in road racing, especially in full body cars like GT1 & the Trans Am series, because they allow for the most articulation & can be highly adjustable & tunable for track conditions. You also see them a lot on top AutoX racers.

Cortex is working on a few things right now but nothing was really picture worthy. Rear end is getting provisions for the diff cooler I picked up at Roush and it is being sent out for powdercoating.
Headers are cut and waiting for LCA's to be installed so some tubing cab be bought to bridge the gap of 2-3" that each primary needs. Probably will get those pieces from SPD in Sac.
Crick (fab guy) has started making the remaining transitions needed for the 5" x 2" flat bottom exhaust to connect to the 3.5" collectors at front and the 90*'s at the rear.
They have modified my LCA's for about 3" of back side clearance for the headers which they will be fitting next.

That's it! I'm going straight to CorteX this week to see if this thing is moving along or not. I'm certain that within an hour of showing up - the car will be sitting outside the shop and I'll have been thrown out with it. And with this build - that would be considered "progress".

Well like Payton the more we look at some things we scratch our heads or try to decide to abandon ship and start over or finish what is started. Currently it is the alien (like that Vince?) exhaust system. What a zoo.....
Hopefully we will be on track soon and on to more predictable things like buttoning up sheetmetal and finishing some mechanical and plumbing.

^^^ This... The whole mockup/concept was a little hard for me to embrace but your whole car is extreme from my perspective in the peanut gallery. It would be a real challenge to pursue not having some concept of the sound to expect. I am sure you have considered plenty, but what recourse will you have if it is too loud for some of the tracks out there once completed, other than not go to those facilities.

I am sure you have considered plenty, but what recourse will you have if it is too loud for some of the tracks out there once completed, other than not go to those facilities.
The sound situation has been part of the planning from the beginning. Fist, the drivers side exit due to the location of most if not all of the local tracks' sound meters (as opposed to most race cars where the rocker exits on the passenger side only).
And the custom removable box muffler made by Rob @ No Limit (which surely appears to be a very well made cool piece at a very fair price) was great in theory. I think it would have worked had Fab5.3 not sized it to fit in the majority of the space allowed. There was just not enough area around the big box (less than an inch everywhere I could see) for airflow and any cooling assistance we thought. So CorteX and I agreed on scrapping that piece unfortunately.
So I ordered up 2 more smaller mufflers the other day to hopefully go in tandem with my other 2 small bullet mufflers and we'll start there. If we have to add a larger case or do something about that later, it won't be the largest project ever and access is relatively easy where this is happening.
Collector transitions are finished

But seriously, with BFG only making about a few sets it seems before of Rivals, I got on a waiting list awhile ago and decided to get them now while I can. Who knows if I'd be able to in the future.
Clutch discs are from Quartermaster.... dual disc.... some kind of "rally" hybrid material.... SUPPOSED to fit my Tilton setup.... that's all I got. We'll all find out at some point.

Suspension is done.
Exhaust has been a pain (for them and me) but is nearing completion. I'll grab it soon and take it to get it coated since I am close by.
Motor/drivetrain have been ready for more than a year. Motor was completed and dyno'd in late 2013. That sucker is ready to sing.
Flares will happen later, maybe this coming winter or next year.
Seats/pedals will be mounted here soon as well as tie in to the diagonal and harness bar CorteX will add.
Son is nearing 6 months old and is the best distraction anyone could ask for. Thanks

Yep. And YA THINK?! Crick is a pretty talented fabricator.
No easy way to transition from a super upside down sideways cross hex Double D into a circle.... and that's just the rear.
The front "collector" replaces the regular NASCAR merge collector and transitions 2 2-1/4" pipes into a parallelogram (or is it rhombus? :sieg:) thingy then into the Double D... Um, yeah.

We discussed relocating the fire bottle to the trunk. Not a big deal or much rework to do that.
And the nearby heat potential and its effect is a good question. I do not know how sensitive that is. Must research. Or just relocate.

All sound meters at Norcal tracks are on the passenger sides (typically), hence the driver side exit. Don't give me a lot of credit, but give me just a little please.

Dave,

Yes it's a tight fit all around but the Butler seat does fit where the current cage is set and with pedals. And as you remember I am a bit more than 5 foot but The kid I bought the car from was shorter than Weld. (Not kidding). And the cage was built by a shop for him so it's not as far as back as I'd like, but it should do. Can't cut out everything in this car ... oh wait, nevermind.... :sieg:
I am thinking about a seat mount setup that can swap the Butler seat and a softer street seat fairly easily.

It is a punching bag... and well deserved eh.
Starts at 3900 because dyno operator likes to go easy on his dyno, that's all.
I'd be willing to bet this thing makes very respectable torque well below that 3900 number.
437 inches and a cam that's really not that rowdy. I am leaving a ton of power on the table with the heads on this thing due to mild cam and low rocker ratio (1.7) vs your average SB2.2 headed engine.

You sure you gonna have enough power there? Jk Have you driven anything that radical, I can't quite remember the horse power numbers on your other cars. It's going to be a tough one to get all that power planted.
Shane
It'll do! There's a lot of power left in it if I want to get more radical with the cam actually. That's for later. Maybe.
While this will undoubtedly be a handful, it's not my first big power car. My previous Camaro with the procharged SBC that Jody built was around 750-800 crank hp (even though I didn't get to put much mileage on it before selling it). But I did daily drive a 700+ hp twin turbo Porsche for 2 years. It's a different car of course but power is power and you do get used to it and comfortable with it.
It's all relative.... I got bored pretty quick with the first motor in this car (550ish hp) and knew I would need more for my own satisfaction. To some people 450-500 hp is a ton. And that's not a bad thing.
And then there's people like SW.. where 800 hp feels like Weld's Miata.
Damn thats a lot of power!
Yeah it should be a wild ride. :D
And you are on fire with your :bigun2: posting today!

I completely agree with Flash68, it's all what your used to, but I have to say that I've now had my 69 on the road now for a few days and there's no way in hell I'd want more power then this ... It's an absolute monster but I've got it just right for 'me', in the wrong hands though this kind of power can get very dangerous very quickly
Cheers
Steve

They always say there is never too much power
I rode Cr 500's back when they were not detuned
unbelievable machines
Pantera has 600 ...bird has 750... after driving
the Bird I often wish the Pantera had more
Ran against a 750hp Pantera on the track several
times and how he could pull me down the straights
was like nitrous
I vote more Power

This has nothing to do with Dave's car or the thread in general... but then come to think about it - not much in here actually does...
I vote more DRIVER capable of handling more power..... and a properly set up car that can actually take advantage of the power.
So many videos already on YouTube of the idiots crashing their brand new HellCats and Corvettes...
People learn to drive better with LOW POWER momentum cars... and most could probably put down better laps times with a Miata than they could/can in an 850hp "PT car". They'd actually drive the line carrying some speed, instead of linking a whole bunch of "oh sh!t" moments together. Thinking back to the dude that used to manage the El Toro track, that drove a PRIUS backwards and laid laps times better than most that came with their big time cars. LOL

I wonder why Greg went out and bought a Miata after driving the Mustang last couple years.... hmmmmm

So one minute you advocate going out and just having fun and it's not about being fast and lap times and transponders and bla bla bla..... and then now it's how to scale in and get to be a better driver by starting with a lower power car, hitting the lines, hitting the g-spot, I mean apex, and then adding power and reducing lap times and bla bla bla... (okay I added a little extra in there :D)
But still, I didn't know John Kerry (expert flip flopper) joined the forum!

I don't understand what's so wrong with flares. Some people make a living designing them. Sheesh!
