Refreshing with pictures so I can remember exactly which Camaro this build is about.....:hello:
Um.. thanks Bash. I forgot what it used to look like too. That was a fun little photo shoot. Local photography student was looking for a muscle car on the Porsche/Exotic forum of all places and I was nearby him so we met up. And yes he asked me to bring some gear and pose like that. :D
I loved it the way it was as well as what you are doing to it! It always creates that visceral reaction when I see it. You just KNOW it's badass.
Appreciate that, Neil. I miss my little screamin 377 cuz of you!
Those old pics...#mustamissedallthatwinning
:ohsnap:
You know how to bring it Skipper.
Flash,
Sorry missed your question until now about the flairs
Yes he is in Morgan Hill
I have an Email and Contact
One of my Superintendents when by
his place and he is still glassing on the weekends
I can send you his contacts
if you want
Bob
No worries, Bob. I actually talked to Mike and we are exchanging some emails now. Thanks!

I dunno, you'd have to ask the owner of the red 65 Fastback there that I have not see make one iota of progress in over a year. :whenitsdone:

Think the real G (Garrett, not Gae) will want to go to Cars & Coffee with his old old man when this is finally done?

Dave I realize I don't know you like some around here, the friendly ribbing is just that, no disrespect meant. I read the short version of your build on CC and even though it's a camaro I'm pretty stoked to see this thing out turning laps!
For the love of God man! Get this thing done! Or at least go look at it with a camera and post some more details!

Bash - it's all good man. No disrespect felt. I actually enjoy the ribbing and.. err.. motivational posts here.
CorteX does things right and safe and have done these things before, so I know we'll get there. And with my son here now I don't have the idle time to dwell on things like I did before.
I'll be heading up there again soon....

I had to clear the air before you went off the reservation like that guy with the Torino....:lmao:
Kids are the best! I've got two boys that still love hangin out with me! I took my oldest to Bonneville a few years back, just him and I road trippin in a 56 Dodge, he still brings up moments of that trip 4 years later....You know you're doing it right when they'd rather go to Bonneville then Disneyland!
You're in good hands with CorteX, just time and money now. I gotta ask though, do you really know what you're getting yourself into? Big power, big sticky tires...it's going to be a frickin monster! Are you ready?

I am not even sure where to start here... first, as many of you know, I've been battling some off and on fatigue and health issues for awhile now and it has kept me from making 3 track days since September. But I was determined to give it a shot at RTTC and do as much as I could. Well I not only made it through, I felt pretty good the whole time and still feed good now that I'm back. It is quite a medical mystery if you ask me, but I will just call RTTC exactly what the doctor ordered!
Now, on to car stuff... I'll start by saying Badmotorfinger now has a bad motor... literally. Something happened mid morning on Friday on the road course. Not sure if overheating caused the problem, or a yet to be identified problem caused the overheating. Water temp was over 240 as I was pulling off the course and the coolant was empty. Not cool. First tow of he day back to the pits.
After a full body cavity search could not find an external problem so it's likely internal. Excessive blow-by is now occurring at this point at an alarming rate. :D
Button it up and head back out and see what happens. Power is down a bit but not terribly. Oil pressure a little low but acceptable. Make some more runs and see what happens. Went to the autoX and knocked over some cones. Man I usually don't hit an excessive amount of cones but I was on fire this weekend.
Back on the road course later in the afternoon and ran a short session but didn't get my clutchless rev matching downshift right and got the tranny stuck between gears. Tow #2 back to the pits.
Quickly got back out on track and went again.... it got a little hot and I came back in to cool and oil pressure was down to about 4 lbs. Yes, 4 lbs. Not cool again. It was mid afternoon now and decided to shut it down for the day and put some thicker oil in it for Saturday. Found some straight 50 at AutoZone and that was the life blood for another day. Oh and the battery was now dead. Add that to the shopping list.
Got back out Saturday and surprisingly the motor held its own for most of the day. Still down on power but pulling pretty good and would stumble a bit a times (also related to the float bowl adjustments for that speed stop dealio). Blow by is borderline hilarious at this point and I am getting texts and strangers coming up to me asking if my car is okay. One asked if I saw the smoke coming out of the engine... How could I not?!
After the motor injury, I was just wanted good clean runs in all 3 events and try to make the shootout. My car is terribly setup for that speed stop squared event so I knew I wouldn't make it far but I just wanted to make it, and I did. We are all anxious to see how we stack up and hopefully they post times soon. I've checked my videos and I have to say I am pretty happy with my estimated times based on my motor problems. The road course was and should be my best event and then the autocross and then I stunk up the speed stop drag race slalom deal. Was a blast though.
First report on recently installed mods:
Corbeau seats - fit great, feel great
Oil cooler system - TBD... oil temps reached high 280-290 when water temp was hitting 240+. Need to figure that out.
T101A trans - AWESOME. By the end of Saturday I was getting pretty decent at downshifting while left foot braking and right foot rev matching. Did experience some wicked wheel hop when timing was off on downshifts, but the car would stay straight as long as I was aimed straight.
Boom Tube exhaust - love it. Not too loud surprisingly due to the car chemistry inserts and it drew a lot of attention for both looks and sound. The GoPro captures the sound pretty good but definitely louder in person. :)
Carbotech brake pads - great pad when they are hot. They shined on the road course. Really liked them. Not sure if they helped a whole lot on autoX. Didn't feel like it even though I tried to drag the brakes quite a bit for that event and the drag/slalom/brake deal... oh yeah, as I drug the brakes people kept checking and asking what's wrong with my car again. LOL
Hotchkis front sway bar - maybe the best mod in past year. Made the turn in excellent and felt like 100 lbs were removed from front of car. I am actually excited to do the Goodguys Peanut in 2 weeks... if the motor cooperates with some oil pressure.
Ok, enough commentary already. On to the videos. These look like my best times. I never put together a super clean road course lap and I think I look slow in this vid, but the time seems to be decent from what I've seen.

system is overheating, oil pressure is dropping, massive blowby.
Why are you still running that engine ? Saves a lot of money to tear something down to rebuild vs spinning a bearing and throwing a rod and destroying crank, block, and everything else. Ask me how I know. I wouldn't run that motor anywhere but to a garage bay.

It was an acceptable euthanasia deal to me at the time... with that engine... at that "event" with some unknown/unverified parts that were supposedly over 10 years old.
No way I'd try that move with my new engine.

Am I supposed to sense drama here, or just a large bill for what looks like a mostly empty trailer?
If Ron the human hotwrench is getting involved however, this thing might actually experience progress, so long as he does not require water . . .

Can you only imagine how much money I saved by spending a lousy $40 grand on the Mustang purchase...... hahahahahahahahahaha
A complete suspension upgrade only took a month or two and included buying 2 complete sets of Formula 43 wheels and 8 new Hoosiers... big brakes - spares - two tool boxes with special tools and spacers... and I'm still half of what this unfinished project cost. :poke:

Thank you, and just seeing Payton's car there solidified my confidence in this decision.
In hindsight, regarding the the last 2 shops I worked with, I don't think they were bad decisions at the time. One seemed riskier than the other and I kinda knew that going in, but I was willing to take that risk at the time. It happens. Even Weld doesn't always make the right decision. Where in Charlotte is the shop located? My son lives in Concord, next time I'm down maybe I'll have time to check stuff out. Glad to see you're moving ahead, and if you are going to clone Payton's car you will indeed have one bad a$$ ride!

I don't really know where it is actually. :sieg:
Payton goes by there fairly often still as his car is there. You should hook up with him (think you already have before maybe?) next time you're coming. And bring a keg. :D

Pettigrew is the fab guy. 20 years Nascar fab experience at Hendrick. Built Jimmy Johnson's 1st gen Camaro (1st with SB2.2 engine, then with LS9).
Sutton is the setup/suspension consultant... well, everyone knows Sutton by now.
Payton is the assistant PM (should be the lead PM but I digress). Weld called him a loser but I do not agree.
I think we'll be just fine over here with our little street car project.

I hope everyone realizes that this is a perimeter chassis. It is built this way because it is easy to square the perimeter during the building process. Once the front and rear stubs are finished being welded in, most of the middle will get cut out, lightening it back up.

If I've learned ANYTHING from doing car crap for awhile now.... cutting is easy - anyone can do it. Cutting with an actual plan on how to put it all back together.... that's where the talent and experience start to kick in. LOL
I'm not saying "I" have that skill or talent (although I've learned a few tricks here and there) -- I'm saying -- be careful when you just see someone's work that has involved nothing more than the cutting portion. You want to see how it was cut - but more - you want to see how it was put back together.

All kidding aside I can guarantee you have learned alot of lessons through this process. Some lessons about the cars and some lessons on people or builders to be exact and I think you do the whole forum a favor to not be so politically correct. You don't have to name names. But others can and need to learn from other experiences. I think it helps the whole process.
I can guarantee you know 100 times more stuff now, then from when we spoke on the phone what seems like 100 years ago after selling your Porsche. There is a difference in bashing people and trying to rub their nose into all the problems and just hoping both parties become better people.
This industry has lot of customers who want the moon but really have no clue what it takes to get there. And builders who think they are everything to everyone. I see alot of builders who WAY WAY over promise and I truly think they think they can do it (inexperience). And you have customers who believe any story even though the builder has never produced anything because the want something so bad ( like the stripper at the dance club who says she loves you ). The builder just went to Harbor Freight with a 1000 bucks the next days opens a shop. Then you have the customer who has read every build thread and know they want all these parts and it should make him MARK STEILOW or DANNY POPP. OR they just carried away in their fantasy and dont even add up the parts total. Simple Math.
My guess of your history from the side lines is
1st shop just not cutting it.
2nd shop was just over their head for what you wanted
3rd shop way over promised
4th shop made other money doing bigger fancier stuff and you were back burnered with a project you were never happy with.
5th shop looks more your speed
I may have too many or not enough shops listed but this seems to be what I remember. I only say this as there is a huge difference between reality and how it works. And you have to be an expert by now or alteast learned some lessons you can share.
Every shop has a range of what they are good at. Alot of shops don't recognize that should say NO to something they suck, because they need cash flow or hate to see a job go somewhere else. And I think every shop serves a different level of expectation. Some shops are Sizzler and some The Steak house at the WYNN in Vegas. Each shop serves a client base. Its the guys who misrepresent what they serve or charge for that are the issue. And customers who have no idea what reality is.

I have indeed learned more than a few valuable lessons here. And it's about cars themselves... and the builders/shops... and it's about you (me) as the owner/hobbyist. Lots of moving parts and just one of them not being right can really derail things. Sometimes it's about keeping up with your buddies.
I drove my fairly simple budget oriented car mostly as is for nearly 2 years upon buying it. Made some key "pro touring" changes/upgrades and it was pretty good to go. I got bored with it. The power. Everything. It no longer "scared" or excited me in a certain way. Sure, it was capable, but I wanted more. Remember, I had owned and daily driven more powerful cars than this so it was not surprise to me. Then it started getting a little stupid. My life is a little more conservative now (married, 1 kid) than when I first bought this car, and yes that does play a role in the bigger picture here. But then you started discussing shops and the constant delays/lack of progress with the car and those are issues pertaining to the shops directly. But the background is important and often times sets the stage - for better or worse.
While your quick assessment of the shops list Rodger is not terribly out of left field, there is no real need to get into specifics with each shop it's been at up until now. Most of that info can be found in this anti-epic thread if one is willing. I take responsibility for my complicit role in everything -- I am not one of those guys who claims he is always right and nothing is ever his fault. I am no mechanic. I am excited to work on this car (and drive it of course) once completed, but the serious work will be performed by trusted friends/local shops -- and there is good reason for that -- financial, safety and personal reasons are on that list.
Since you asked, here is my quick list of valuable lessons learned. Some are obvious and preached often, maybe some not so much.
Trying to stay local when choosing a shop makes sense for obvious logistical reasons, but don't force that issue if the right "fit" is just not there.
Productivity and efficiency (functions of experience) are KING -- not the bill rate.
Being the guinea pig for a shop is dangerous business. Take their track record of COMPLETING things seriously.
Personality and communication should mesh at a certain minimum level. Don't have to be best friends, but a working relationship is key.
Creative control - discuss this up front on any custom work. Do you trust them to just get it done in the best way they see fit? Or how involved do you want/need to be?
Don't let the cost of shipping a car to the right shop deter you from doing so -- it may save you thousands and be the right fit when all is said and done.
Trust your instincts. If it ain't feeling right, it is likely to not get better. Cut losses and run.
In sum, I could not be happier to have my car at Jim Pettigrew's place in Nascar country. Only looking forward from here.
P.S. Chad -- I love a good solid Panzer tank chassis. I'll see you at a CA track in 2016... maybe 2017.

I know you dont' want to get into the problems with your shops, but I just can't understand how you could go from a fairly completed chassis and front end to ripping EVERYTHING out. Was there really some super serious fitment issue or radical mis-alignment ?
I do 100% of the work myself, and I'm not always happy with my "shop" either. So there's that.

when you have the choice of having to compromise suspension geometry due to factory sheet metal and another mans design or tearing it all out and build the suspension they way it needs to be, the later is the smarter choice. Albeit the more expensive choice but it will be worth it in the end. Honestly I don't know one shop that would finish any car that was started in another mans mind. onward and upward

Vince probably knows more of the dirty laundry than I have aired out here. I bet you would also agree Preston if I had the energy and willingness to post more. I just don't see it being fruitful. Onward and upward is right.
It did come down to fitment and then safety. When I started this version of the car in 2012, I was not married and a not yet a father, so real safety was not a driving force (to a degree, it wasn't completely ignored).
Lots of things (from different shops) were done without a lot of thought or experience in how it would function and actually work. My fault in that was too much blind faith. I have blind faith in Pettigrew because he deserves it and it is warranted via his real world experience.
FYI, the front sub is not getting completely redone, just modified a bit and then reattached, similar to Payton's (we have the same sub).
To me, tying the front and rear together is the biggest gain and improvement here with the perimeter (tank) chassis. It addresses a number of issues I had always wanted to do, but now the time was just right, for the reasons Vince has touched on.
I just want to know who loves the new little race car more? You or Garrett? LOL

There are some great pics on facebook (where I pulled the one you quoted). Go to "Dusold Designs" and scroll back through all the uploaded pictures to the March 2015 timeframe there are half a dozen pics of the chassis. Also a few pics of the front radiator setup and airflow sometime after that.
P.S. Chad -- I love a good solid Panzer tank chassis. I'll see you at a CA track in 2016... maybe 2017.
Dave, I really hope so! I'm sure your "tank" chassis as I"ve called it will be badass and your car is going to have far less compromises than my own when you do get it completed. I would love to go up and run Laguna Seca again and I do have a goal to run the 5 mile Thunderhill track sometime in 2016! American Muscle is sorely lacking at the CA tracks unless it is an Optima event or guys hear there is magazine coverage or something (I still can't fathom how many builds are posted on this and other forums and long long technical discussions about the theoretical best parts on a track and just how few cars actually show up at a regular track day).

You are so right and while it has improved since you and went tracking in 2010 and were 2 of the 3 muscle cars out of 60 or 70 cars on those days, we are still the vast minority at any given track day anywhere. I don't mind that though really, but yeah a few more cars of our era would be welcomed out there.
Pro Touring has long been about putting very capable parts on a car that most users won't ever use hard (on a track anyway). And that's fine for those people. More than fine. I bet their stuff brakes less.

There are a lot of negative things about CA these days I bitch about, but the 3 track options (Laguna Seca, Thunderhill, Sonoma) within 1-2 hours of me are not one of them. :)
