They're probably getting a little tired of watching you get your butt kicked around the forum by that FE Ford guy.

Withdrawal occurs because your brain works like a spring when it comes to addiction. Up dates with pictures are brain depressants that push down the spring. They suppress your brain's production of neurotransmitters like noradrenaline. When you stop getting up dates with pictures it's like taking the weight off the spring, and your brain rebounds by producing a surge of adrenaline that causes withdrawal symptoms.

After cutting and making clearance for the SB2 motor and trans in BMF, cardboard templates were made for the proposed motor mounts to the front engine plate. Also a transmission cross mount was needed and some modifications were in need for the existing Torque Arm mount for both of these cross braces to tuck under the frame line. The biggest issue is that BMF runs 3.5 inch exhaust pipes after the headers and I did not want these to hang below the frame line either. I will be making a custom section of exhaust tubing which will be a half oval that is 2" tall and 5" wide to fit under the new cross brace cut outs. Also the cross braces were raised into the floor to help make the necessary clearance and still keep the spanning strength by not trimming the cross braces so thin that they would flex.

The design that was used actually attaches both the trans mount and the torque arm mount together to help "Beef-up" this area of the car. An 800hp motor and the lifting effect of the torque arm from sticky 335 slicks was a concern, and I wanted to make sure the core was reliable, strong, and easy to access for servicing.

So, follow along as I share Dave's 68 Camaro progress.... We have a race deadline you know. :)

I knew I would be doing some changes to the interior to add the Oil sump tank, fire system, pedals, and sheet metal work... The interior was removed.

BMF has a pretty nice roll gage already installed in the car. However, I will be adding a front dash bar and connecting the exiting gage to the new engine bay down bars. Also I will be adding some down bars from the rear gage area to the top of the rear coil-over mounts to tie the complete system together. Safety first.

But before this is addressed, I will start with the cross braces under the car.

http://i1113.photobucket.com/albums/k514/Fab50Three/Badmotofinger%2068%20Camaro/IMG_6517_zpsc5950c7e.jpg

A design was settled on and transferred to a section of 2" x 4" .120 wall square stock.

http://i1113.photobucket.com/albums/k514/Fab50Three/Badmotofinger%2068%20Camaro/IMG_6519_zps069ec927.jpg

http://i1113.photobucket.com/albums/k514/Fab50Three/Badmotofinger%2068%20Camaro/IMG_6520_zpsfb08e0e9.jpg

And the cutting and fitting begins. There are several stages to this part and this is the first step just to get it up in position for additional measurements and marking for the next stage.

Test fitment #1, pushed up level with frame and then loaded the transmission weight on the rubber mount and marked it up for the rubber mount bracket.

http://i1113.photobucket.com/albums/k514/Fab50Three/Badmotofinger%2068%20Camaro/IMG_6529_zps03508dc4.jpg

Notice the position of the original Torque Arm. It has even been moved up to touch the floor (after the body mounts were removed. Gained .75" of clearance). However, the mounting tabs still hung down and they were not an easy removal process when the mount needed to be removed for transmission service. Also notice the old exhaust cut out section on the torque arm mount. The torque arm mount will be moved and modified to match the new transmission brace.

Some parts were made based on the prior mock up, and then the cross brace was mocked up again and the parts were tacked into position with a load on the rubber trans mount.

This stage is ready for welding. It needs to be strong enough for me to load the weight back on it for the next stage of making the side frame mounts.

Another stage to this trans mount, making parts for the cross brace to mount to the side frame rails. I didn't have a lot of room to do the traditional slide into place frame mount and I wanted this trans brace to just drop out for servicing. It's mounting strength will be combined with the torque arm brace in another stage of fabrication.

http://i1113.photobucket.com/albums/k514/Fab50Three/Badmotofinger%2068%20Camaro/IMG_6547_zps51b26262.jpg

Nothing fancy here, just a small tack inside to hold the spacers in the cross brace so that the 1/2" mounting bolts will not pinch the cross brace and weaken it. The ends will be closed up in another fabrication stage later.

Once everything was positioned and shimmed into place, I doubled checked the alignment.... because I was getting ready to weld this baby in for good.

http://i1113.photobucket.com/albums/k514/Fab50Three/Badmotofinger%2068%20Camaro/IMG_6555_zps9f4c2a7f.jpg

For you MIG lovers, welding out of position upside down. (TIP: reduce wire speed 25% and increase heat to the next level above the metal that is being welded. On the up-right start at top and go down and pause every 2 beads just enough time to let the red fade before starting next 2 beads down. On the over head, use a skip back pattern after burning in each bead. On the over head you will need to speed up and keep an eye on the melted pool so it does not get to big and sag or drip). This shot of the weld shows it after it was just been wiped down, I used an Anti-Spatter spray prior to welding. As a side note, Dave and I made a game plan to try and meet a race deadline... and one of the areas to save time was to use the MIG process as much as possible. It can be 3 to 5 times faster to MIG over TIG for some welding projects.

Now that the transmission mount was mocked up and secured with the frame mounts, I could start to focus on the torque arm mount modifications.

http://i1113.photobucket.com/albums/k514/Fab50Three/Blue%2068%20Camaro/IMG_6569_zps9aa0f3ac.jpg

The original mounting location of the torque arm utilized an attachment point on the front frame clip around the rear body bolt just under the front seat area. The torque are pivot point in the mount is further behind this location and the original mount had to cantilever 6" back away from the strong part of the mount. This is similar for other torque arm mounts that I've seen and I'm going to guess that this is the best production mounting location. This location is probably chosen because not everyone will have the addition of frame connectors to move the mount backward closer toward the pivot point. However, we are in luck... Dave already has frame connectors welded in and I decided to use them to clean up this mounting space.

http://i1113.photobucket.com/albums/k514/Fab50Three/Blue%2068%20Camaro/IMG_6570_zpsc88d8ff5.jpg

Flash68

There are a few reasons the torque arm modifications became important for this set-up. One, originally the sub-frame mounted lower because of the body disc spacers. Those were removed to gain more ground and motor clearance. And that left an awkward mounting location and spacing against the body. Two, the torque arm mount had a plate style mount to the sub-frame that required 4 1/4" bolts to be tightened from inside the frame. I was planning to cover those access holes up after the frame was welded back together.

http://i1113.photobucket.com/albums/k514/Fab50Three/Badmotofinger%2068%20Camaro/IMG_6243_zpsd2a031dc.jpg

http://i1113.photobucket.com/albums/k514/Fab50Three/Badmotofinger%2068%20Camaro/IMG_6242_zps7ed6806f.jpg

http://i1113.photobucket.com/albums/k514/Fab50Three/Badmotofinger%2068%20Camaro/IMG_6240_zpsf36798bc.jpg

The above is the original configuration. I needed more ground clearance and large exhaust cut-outs in the cross braces for Dave's set-up. And with the new transmission brace, I had planned on joining the 2 braces together... which allowed me more freedom to move the torque arm brace backward more and closer to the torque arm pivot point. By removing the cantilevered leverage and the ability to connect the 2 braces netted a much stronger and versatile core that each piece could be removed independently.

I figured that I would just flip the torque arm mount 180 degrees and that way the extra pipe stub-out could be used as a connecting location to the front trans mount. Also it would give me more room to use a similar style mount and have more room between the 2 cross braces.

I used a special metal melting formula to remove the old exhaust scallops.

A few stages to this mount. First was to cut some space in the floor and also cut the original ends of the torque arm mount so I could start to measure and mock the mount up in the new 180 degree position.

So with all the changes and evolution of the Optima/Ultimate Street Car group, the American Street Car group, etc etc I have decided I want to follow a sanctioning body that is more stable and "set" as far as any rules go for compliance purposes. I figure if I am good for a NASA/SCCA deal I should be fine for the current and future rule sets of the "pro touring" type groups. But no guarantees there.

I became interested in AIX when I first started talking to Jake about his 2nd Gen Camaro a few years back when he was running in that series back east with his suspension approved for it. It is real wheel to wheel racing (not something I'm interested in immediately, but very possibly down the road) but its 2014 rules look to be a close fit to what's done or planned for my car while at Fab53. I've discussed with Brett and we plan to see how close we are currently and what any add'l work entails when I am down there (hopefully) in 2 weeks.

As a long time NASA CMC competitor, there is no way I would run a car like yours in AIX. It is a great series, but I just can't see wasting a vintage Camaro body in wheel to wheel racing. The guys race pretty clean, but you WILL get hit. That's just part of racing. Just my .02.

I was hoping to elicit some good feedback on this. Wasn't sure what I'd get here. I have thought of that issue but thought contact was pretty rare. I figured I'd start in TT and then if I felt the urge eventually maybe move to AIX if W2W is what I craved. You make a good point and something I need to strongly consider.

How have you enjoyed CMC? What car have you been running?

CMC was the most fun I've ever had in the car hobby. There is nothing that compares to wheel-to-wheel competition. I ran the #87 Mustang for several seasons in Northern California before moving on to Motorola Cup (Continental Tire series). I also ran another Mustang in Texas on several occasions. NASA CMC was way more fun than the pro series stuff at a fraction of the cost. You can tool around at the back of the pack and minimize chances of body damage but front runners typically do some rubbing. It's not a crash and bang show by any means, but things happen and even good drivers make mistakes. In my experience, the majority of cars will sustain damage at some point either from their own driver's error or someone else. I typically budgeted a once per year freshening and repaint but some seasons it stayed pretty clean.

We typically ran Sears Point, Thunderhill, Laguna Seca, Buttonwillow, and Willow Springs. We also occasionally ran Phoenix and a street course at Pomoma. Sears Point was my home track and I really miss it living on the East Coast now.

Stick to NASA Time Trials Dave and it will be just as fun. Kevin Smith is running the NASA Time Trial gig under Albert Butterfields lead but Albert rarely needs to bother with Kevin as it is a well oiled machine as it is.
Neil, dont remember seeing you at any of the NASA CMC events. Mostly know Mike Plum and Adam but glad to see you on this site and look forward to more input. I as well wanted to run AI but didn't feel like bringing home somebody elses paint so I stuck with TT and get out as often as I can afford but mostly with NCRC now due to budget constraints. I normally will hit a NASA TT event when they are at Sonoma since NCRC doesn't hold any events there.

Pretty decent tracks around here. Sonoma is my closest track these days about 30 min away and can't wait to run there.

CV Products reservoir
Woodward collapsible column
Setrab diff cooler with lines ($50)
Billet oil line brackets ($10 each)

I just realized I posted the size incorrectly. It is actually 3.5" round into a 5.25" x 2" approx oval if I remember the oval correctly.

Roush Yates had a whole wall of shelving and bins I spent 20 minutes sorting through and measuring.

Car is coming along nicely! I also need to make a visit to the Thrift store for some goodies. Saw a few threads back you were talking about AIX, two of the east coast nasa regions have started a class for Outlaw Vintage cars (like ours) We run in the same group as AI, AIX, CMC ect... but usually start at the back so there is less chance of "rubbing" So far NASA South East, and NASA Mid Atlantic have sanctioned the class, and we have to nod to run in the East Nationals at RA, but just for exibition. Check it out at this link http://www.outlaw-vintage-racing.com/home.html

I can't imagine. They would have to drag me out of there. I love where you've taken your car Dave!

Thanks! I need to go back and allow more time there. :goggles:

Thanks. I have looked into that class and contacted Gordon but there does not seem to be any traction out west here. Would be pretty much the perfect class IMO for many of us. VERY simple rulesets and like you said lot less chance of trading paint. Thanks for checking in.

When I returned from the hauler road trip and met up with Brett at the shop we took the opportunity to test fit a Kirkey seat in there since I have sold my Corbeau seats. I really like them but they are really not track duty seats so I am looking at options right now.

What about Tillett Seats? They make a lot of cool stuff. All super light weight!

Yeah my stock column had some "issues" on the engine bay side and once I saw the pile of nice Woodward columns for sale cheap in Charlotte it was an easy bite. I'd been leaning anyway. My car came with a pretty good cage and the only bar they didn't really finish was the under dash bar so Brett is doing that and it ties into the new pedals and column assembly all at the same time to get the right setup and placement.

All the street car jokes aside around here, safety is a big concern and priority for me and if I am usually on the fence with something, within reason, the safer/stronger path gets chosen.

Good for you Dave!

I'm relatively "new" to the whole road race thing - having done my first Bondurant school 10 years ago... but buying the car from Charley was what put me in the drivers seat.

I'm telling ya - you guys have no idea how fast you can get going on some of these tracks... and you get used to it real quick. Suddenly it really doesn't feel so fast. But pounding down the front straight at Thunderhill -- you're taking turn one at a good 90 mph maybe? I don't know - I'm afraid to look... but if you hit some oil - or coolant - or break a suspension part... DUDE... YOU ARE WADDING THE CAR UP BIG TIME.

I'd prefer to be able to tell stories about it sitting around the campfire. Safety makes it fun. Otherwise you might as well be playing Russian roulette.

I totally agree, my Mustang hit close to 160 on the back straight at VIR, all I could think about was lug nuts and wheel bearings. The car was lifting so bad, felt like the front tires weren't on the ground. 160mph right into a hairpin(crazy). After 3 sessions it started to feel normal. VIR kind of made the other tracks seem less dangerous, and I think that is when you get in trouble. 100mph will hurt as easy as 160mph.

I know when you say "you guys have no idea" you are just speaking in general to the masses, but yeah I do have an idea... I've hit 135+ in my car at Big Willow and you do get a sense of what can get go wrong and how fast it can happen if you get off course, off track, or just something small fails like Ron stated. And if you have the balls to have the car and cajones to take turn 8/9 there at well into triple digits, well, lots can go wrong. But any turn on a road course really can jack you up bad is that point.

Safety first. And second. :rules:

160 is absolutely flyin in an old bucket of bolts like our stuff. Big difference between 130 or so and 160... in any car.

So for the good of all following along, I'll do the noble thing and try to resurect this thread. Dave came down this weekend and he, Rob and I met down at Brett's shop. My first time there, I could tell from the previous shop pics I'd seen of Fab 53 that the shop has come a really long way. The place is set up for just about any fabrication project you possibly could want.

Looking at Dave's car compared to the last time I saw it I was in awe. The stance, parts, effort and money that has gone into this thing is incredible. It's raw, well thought out and just hardcore-nasty-cool.

Of course, Dave'll never be able to keep the tires connected to pavement long enough to make a dent in his lap times but that just can't detract from how cool this car is, or how many points he'll lose at street car events

I'll let Dave tell the rest of the story but here's a pic of Dave trying to fit into his racecar seat. He's trying to exhale and talk at the same time (typical), doing neither well:

Fun times at the shop today with Ron, Rob and Dave. They will have to tell ya about my new discount deal. Basically if you can beat my time of 31.9 sec around the shop on the shop 88cc pit bike you get a 20% discount. funny shiat right there.

Anyway, a few updates on Dave's project.

3.5" dual round exhaust that's tucked up under the frame line under the car and exits out driver side quarter panel. Provision is planned for a secondary exhaust muffler behind the driver seat area. All the exhaust tubing is enclosed behind a fire wall separating oil tank, exhaust and driver compartment.

From one guy who has just one exhaust tip exiting behind my ear to another, "what did you say, I didn't catch that, huh" get used to it. You notice on my new build, the exhaust goes out the back, and yours has bullet mufflers. Hearing isn't near as important as people think.

Do love the direction the car is going, and the work Fab53 is doing looks phenomenal. Can't wait to see how that SB2 works out.

We have some ideas to keep heat and sound down. It will have a second custom muffler option for those "quiet" tracks like Thunderhill and Sonoma. Laguna Seca need not apply.

Bullet mufflers are an upgrade for me. My boom tube before had no muffler (those chambers in there don't really count IMO) exiting in the same area. It wasn't 3.5" duals and it wasn't an SB2 but still. It was loud yeah but at RTTC and some street cruising I thought it was acceptable. :headspin:

So I was excited to test fit my brand new Butler full containment seat I scored a deal on from a dirt late model racer. These seats are phenomenal in their quality and design and made a Kirkey road race seat look like a piece of aluminum foil. It fit me in the waist/hips but it all went downhill from there. Man a lot of those drivers are skinny little suckers. This seat was made for Brett's 14 year old son.... at 120 lbs. :disgusted:

I know the tracks are putting DB limits on cars. I'm assuming they are putting DB meters somewhere on the track to measure this. I know at Jersey Motorsport Park, one of the track officials said something about my Mustang. Was wondering if we couldn't try something stupid like Super Traps as a secondary Muffler that we could dial back when we need to, and open up when we don't. Looks like you would have enough room, I think mine could fit them also.

Around here yeah Laguna is bad, but the others are all decent IMO. Thunderhill and Sonoma are 100+ and if Buttonwillow and Willow Springs actually test for sound I am not aware of it. There were no sound meters at Streets of Willow or Big Willow when I ran there 2 years ago.

We'll have to just hope for a 105db day that is accessible to mere mortals in the future Ron..... then you bring it on out!

So that's the only similarity you noticed?

fixed :buttkick:

Plus the extra tall cowl induction hoods, boom tube side exhausts (gee, I see that all the time on 1st gens...lol), black wheel centers, no front bumpers etc.

I saw this Mustang at Historics (yes, Laguna Seca) 2 years ago and the combo was very striking IMO. I liked it a lot and have considered it since. I go back and forth on it.

Funny - My first impression of the rendering was 2 stripes don't work in orange.....I was thinking one........after it's running and sorted out of course.

Decal it, no paint - easy to change.......like curtains. :D

Yep. That's how the playing with stripes came about. Easy and cheap to experiment with. It's down the road and lower priority. But if another car keeps looking more like mine every time I see it, I might have to wrap the whole dang car.

yes! single wide but say no to the roof stripe.

I am beyond committed to the roof stripe at this point. I am good with that.
