When Brett and I stopped by to grab my engine on Friday, Mike @ Watson Racing just happened to be dynoing a 650 cubic inch Pro Stock motor.

The sound made the hairs stand up all over my body. The hairs did stand up when my motor was on the dyno, but that was for different reasons. :G-Dub:

1400+ hp
1000+ ft lbs

Enjoy.

My issues (the car) were actually all based on a weak ignition ground.

Experiencing that pro stock motor in person had to be something!

Thank you... and BOTH! I plan to drive it on the street as much as possible. I moved last year out of the city and for the first time I have a garage of my own and nice streets and roads to cruise around in.

I married well. But I actually handle fighting the traffic violations in this house. Go figure.

I'll just put around on the street with this and make noise with it. The get up and go will only be done on a track.

I contemplated electric but mechanical can handle big power too. My pump is from CV Products (Think: Nascar) and it is good for up to 1200 lbs per hr at 8 psi. Nickel plated for corrosive protection.

Plus I just like that is a mechanical and I have a carb. Minimal electrics. :D

I have snowballed this project from a pretty basic car when I got it to the creature you see now. It does need a man capable of tying it all together for performance reasons and for safety reasons. This thing will be a weapon when done and I want to feel confident in the car and what's underneath when I go hammer down. Brett is that man for the job.

I love the look, but I'm curious what the control arm angles look like at this ride height? I know on my JRS setup, the lower arm would have been angled upward going to the spindle sitting anywhere close to this low. Are you guys concerned about this, or are you going to address the geometry in some way?

I love the work and think it's going to look awesome when done! :)

These are dual purpose cars we are building, so there are compromises.
Is 1 inch lower ride height really worth the re-engineering of not only the front susp geometry, the front steering geometry, the issue with limited room above the tire till it will want to hit the hood hinge area on a first gen when going that low, to the issues with moving/raising the floor for exhaust and ground clearance, this is still a street car and it needs to navigate roads and drive way entrances(which is a chore with current ride height let alone dave has 1 inch longer front splitter).Let alone moving to the back of the car now you have to re- engineer the shock travel(upper crossmember, already tight to floor, trailing arms and tq arm angles and mounting height, as well as the dual layer unibody area right in front of and above the center section, so you have to question "why did i even buy a production style susp system" why not just cut everything out and build a one off race chassis, where mounting oil tanks, fuel cells, fire bottle, sway bar control etc is easy?
There is a ton of work to this and to cut before thinking about the big picture is not good, let alone the other work in the rear, on a first gen camaro, you will need to raise the wheel tubs( they are already close at full bump at designed ride height), which then leads into cutting into the inner quarter supports, 1/4 window mounting area etc. I am not sure one could do that effectively without all the panels removed from the car.
This all sounds great if its what the customer wants, but if he wanted this why would the shell of the car be on a perimeter style chassis jig, not jackstands.
my engine crossmember is 5 inches at ride height with a 25.5 tall tire, that puts the undercar legs at 4 inches, what are you going to clear at 3 inches? Thats only lowering the car 1 inch (why do all this for one inch)
Last question is what does all this work do in the end? look cool? cost a ton? how much time did you shave off at the track? I have a proven formula for road racing, track day and time trial, raced it myself for the last 5 years, with many class wins, track records etc, from autox to time trial, to wheel to wheel racing, when you get to the track, whether the ride height is 4 inches or 5 doesn't matter when your 4 seconds behind.
Build some rocker extensions, and build flares to sit over tires, keep all the clearance you can get, these camaros don't have much extra room.

POW!!!

Jake you certainly have a racing pedigree and it can't be denied that you have proven your stuff is competitive on track days. Your post on the other hand isn't so great and is obviously all about personal attachment to your product and not really trying to be a productive part of Dave's build.

It sucks that it comes across as taking a cheap shot at another fabricator because his customer bought your part.:snapout:

I didn't see him bashing your product. Is it perfect or was he just respectful in not saying anything?

Maybe you read something else into what he posted. If you did maybe the PM function would be a better first step that bashing a guy posting a build plan.

Do you, Todd or U turn really think that lowering the body over the subframe is going to be the limiting factor in drivability? :lostmarbles:
Not the Tilton triple disc clutch or the non syncro trans or the boom tube exhaust? Those are common to all soccer mom cars. But that 3.5" to 4" ground clearance is a deal killer.

I've seen Brett drive his too low to be streetable (by your definition because it's lower than what is proposed on Daves) 67 Camaro from Long Beach to Irvine and back to Cars and Coffee. Something like 80+ miles of street driving.

His car has 315s on all four corners and no flares yet he seems to have done the impossible and been able to find room for suspension travel in that cramped first gen. Must be magic:headscratch: Or maybe he just thought things though and executed a good plan. It's not like this is his first rodeo with a Camaro.

Don't give him credit for his attention to detail and building things that work just attack hi for modifying your part. That makes sense.

Do looks matter in a Protouring (or whatever we are calling these builds these days) car? F:censored: yes. The idea is function and style. Otherwise why waste your time building a First Gen Camaro. Just build a clapped out tube chassis race car and hit the track.

People on this site spend tens of thousands of dollars on stuff that doesn't add a hint of performance in the name of bling. I don't see you lecturing them.

Would you be posting on this thread if he had started with a Howe subframe?

What I see is you got offended that somebody was modifying one of your subframes. A subframe he bought second hand, not new from you.

He bought it because he believes in the suspension geometry you use (he probably read a few of your posts about how great you are and how many races you've won. You know like the one on this thread :lmao: )

But he has a vision for what his protouring car is going to look like and it didn't include mudflap looking side skirts so he talked with Brett about lowering the body over the frame while maintaining your geometry and suspension travel.

You could have offered to help in that effort, add you input and win some fans. Instead you just came across as bitter.

Hopefully that changes cuz I know Dave is a fan of your stuff and I bet he'd like you to support his build instead of throw stones at it.

Rob, I don't think Jake meant to bash anyone. I believe he is questioning the motives behind the work involved to achieve what he believes is a small gain...productive or not.

As a performance shop I have been down that road and felt that the required modifications to do it right might hurt performance. It wasnt worth the time or money to even try it. As a great friend once said "street car or race car, there is no in between, You only end up with a fast street car or a slow track car. Make your choice."

I believe Dave has a goal in mind of how he wants his car to look and perform. If he achieves his goals then he will be happy. If he doesn't he will fix it.

This maybe simplistic, but why wouldn't you just use the drop spindles to take some height out of the front. It would be a hell of a lot cheaper, and it also fixes that stupid not being able to swap out the wheel bearings at the track without breaking the knuckles apart thing(lower bolt is exposed on drop spindles). I know Steve Rupp had the same issue with Bad Penny, and installed billet drop uprights, fixed height issue without changing geometry.

Hell, Jake helped me modify his subframe on my AMX. I think he was just saying that was a lot of coin, and effort for an inch.

Not wanting to stoke any flames, but I read it the same way. (it probably also helps that I know Jake and have communicated with him for a few years now) Although I do think Dave's intentions (I could be wrong, shouldn't speak for him) aren't as much concerned with streetability as track performance (Rob certainly pointed out a few of those in his post).

I think this car is going to be awesome when completed. Since I run the JRS setup also, and my car sits pretty low, I was just wondering what effect going that much lower would have. Jake actually emailed me and explained that some angle to the LCA's is actually expected and planned with his setup/geometry, so I got a little more education myself from asking the question...

I'll be curious to follow along here and see how things are modified to handle the changes. Certainly anything can be done, and it's Dave's project and money to throw at it! :G-Dub:

Interesting--buried in this seems to be a debate between a trade off between looks and performance--(desired ride height/looks vs track performance)

I think it's worth all of the effort to have my car as low as it can go---but I like the way it looks--and I will be driving mine on the street and taking long trips--and I am willing to sacrifice some performance if necessary to achieve that. The great thing about having Brett do this for me is the fact that he has been able to achieve this for me while giving me more suspension travel than I had before and better articulation at a lower ride height than I had before--which in the end gives me a better performing car at a ride height that I absolutely love. Brett won't do it unless it's going to be correct in the end. I recognize that 20's on a 69 in the rear is not every ones taste--but I have never built the car for anyone but me. So in the end, build it the way you want it--if it costs an extra 10k to lower the car and you have it to spend, do it--especially if it won't sacrifice performance. Trade offs for looks, performance, streetability , etc are a big part of this gig in my opinion--and somewhere--usually in your wallet--is the balance of all of these.

Ok Brett, I was no where near your balls on this one. You have to stop thinking every comment is an attack on your manhood.

This isn't the first time. When I made the harmless observation and commented "although I'm not a big fan of grinding down tig welds on a roll cage component" you took it personal and then attacked my skills and knowledge as a weldor. Fine, I'm thick skinned.
I get it Brett, your an artist. But please don't take opinions so personal. Just look at it for what it is. Don't get me wrong, I like your Brett-ti-torials and look forward to them but geeze man throw away the beret and man up. Your on a public forum. Your gonna get opinions and criticism from all sides.

All I was saying was I think Dave may need a taller tire and I'm sticking with that. I think it would have been a lot easier if you had replied " what do you mean Vince".

Again I'm not putting you down. It's ok.

Lost my own bet -- the chin spoiler is 3.6 inches high.... I need 4+ inches to clear the ramp of the trailer.... and had all manor of issues trying to load this up.... wood under the wheels etc.

Of course this measurement depends on lots of things -- such as the distance from the nose to the wheel center etc - and the little Lotus is quite long there.

Just saying -- LOW is fun but creates other issues with drivability. No way the Lotus see any street driving - and it just simply wouldn't make it if I tried.

You've got to watch for jack clearance and things like that - especially at the track where you may need to actually work on the car. I carry race ramps in the rig for this reason.

It's the factory Sig 2 piston system.

As you probably know, Vince, the Sig 556 is a not a true AR-15 platform (gas piston vs direct impingement) but does share some features and parts interchangeability.

I was expecting a real man-gun and got a passive ***** cat. :D

That said, excellent CQ weapon. Wish I could afford one for a house gun but the prices for a decent one are off the charts.

So not trying to stir the puddin or anything but, Brent, given all that you do have planned in way of modifying existing suspension and subframe components, why not just build a full frame? I would think that would give you the most freedom to really design around all the obstacles presented. I bet it would also be faster, cheaper, and maybe even easier. Just wondering. I really like the direction you guys are headed with this car. Good luck!

Vince is exactly right when you analyze that at this point in time. It is easy to look at that in hindsight but I started this new phase 16 months ago (it hurts to type that) when a local guy PM'ed me asking if I was interested in his Jake's sub and torq arm. I'd already been talking to Jake and was leaning toward his setup, so it all took off from there and the snowballing began.

As much as I love Payton's car on Jake's full frame, I really am enjoying the "struggle" to maintain a street/race car balance (how I envision it) and I understand that that is totally in the eye of the beholder as many would label this a race car. I like that challenge am honestly looking forward to an "unstreetable" street car. :)

BUT... I am tired of not driving my car and watching all these guys have a blast at various events. I wanna join in the fun and compete and that is the real driving force at this point. My car has been down for about as long as I got to drive it from late 2010 to early 2012 and that just sucks.

I'll be meeting with Brett on Sunday while I am down in Socal for a wedding and we will be taking a look at various ride heights and the work involved. After some hard self analysis lately I hope I can be comfortable (aesthetically) with a ride height that will require minimal hard core fab like Renner's had to go through. And Brett has plenty of other fab work on my punchlist to do anyway (dry sump container, fuel cell structure, cage work, etc).

But if I knew what I knew now, and after seeing Payton's car, if I had to do it over I just might choose the full frame route.... Oh well, onward and upward.... no time to look too far in the past.

Payton, you bastage....

Jongbloed Racing.

I found that out the hard way. Yesterday I was looking for some info on the brakes Dave was running, since I thought they were AP Racing. After clicking over one out of every ten pages for a little while, I just gave up.

Found the info thanks to "the Google." I still had to call to order the parts though. In retrospect maybe I should have asked Dave if I could borrow his brakes for the next two weeks. It isn't like he will be needing them any time soon.

Don't say that. BMF may make it in for 2014 or 2015. There is the American Iron Mustang, and an unlimited class Cadillac Challenge Car running this year.

In any case, I think your brakes did run Optima with Shipka's car.

Engine will be about 1.5" lower and 3" set back from stock position. This was about as far as we could go without getting into major (what's minor? LOL) work. Brett says my ebay NASCAR air box made my Crawford Composites (Toyota :peepwall:) fits just about right. Sometimes things work out. :)

Can't wait to see the car next weekend after SEMA/OUSCI. Gonna be a fun trip.

It's a 437ci SBC with sb2.2 heads, intake from the used NASCAR parts pile.

Motor is a story in itself but Dart Little M, Callies/Lunati, Joe Gibbs SB2.2 heads, and E85 conversion are the highlights.

And YES a fellow Soundgarden fan here. I was wearing my Soundgarden shirt when my last Camaro caught on fire and the front half of it burned in front of me, so the connection to my next car just kinda made sense to me. :)

Right on Tim... I actually listened to that tune in my garage today. :rockin:

Speaking of noise, due to the lower ride height we are arriving at, the torque arm's inherent space killing, and my desire to keep a 3.5" exhaust volume and hopefully retain at least a good portion of my boom tube, Brett and I have talked about some interesting ideas for the exhaust. We'll get a better idea next week when we look at it together in person.

byndbad914
11-04-2013, 08:08 PM
I have some ideas on my car as well but it is going to be a PITA to make large diam exhaust fit, even if I consider oval tubing. I may use a mix of oval and round tubing as I like the Dynomax stuff I used on the Porsche and they have round inlets/outlets. One cannot underestimate the value of noise and hell fire when you track a car! One day a few years ago at a track in southern CO it was just me out there and a guy showed up to see what was going on at the track. He heard my car while at the grocery store a few miles away and he thought there was an event going on!

You were the brighter of the two of us with a little less set back, at about 6" from stock in the Nova I am having to really think about how to make the floor mounted pedal assembly clear the gas pedal :headscratch: It definitely cuts down on the fab work. I will figure it out but I don't want to be sitting in the car like a Cobra with my feet clear to the left, or the opposite of the 914 where legs went right to clear the wheelwell. In the stock 914, they actually mounted the seat square in the car, pedals square but offset right, then put the steering column in at an angle! It forced me to sit in the seat sideways.
