That is a great looking engine. Very clean looking. I really like the 'lack of' bling. Nice
Might be a stupid question, but what is you reasoning for going with a carburetor... versus FI?

Money and I really like the look. I'd have to go to a hogan or similar intake to make me happy if it was injected. Doubt it will happen anytime soon. The drivability would be nice but I'm sick of spending money....

Greg, you aren't kidding. I've been going non stop since Friday at 5:45 AM. That includes two nights of beer drinking for my birthday and my buddy. :faint:
With new parts come new problems. :D (That's pretty good) I didn't have it off the truck for 10 minutes before I found problem number uno. The SFI aluminum sandwich plate wouldn't clear my crank throw and... the cam plug sticks out beyond the bellhousing mounting surface. Out comes the jig saw, it's not pretty but it's hidden. I considered having it water jetted....naaaah New engine means re dialing in the bellhousing. I found my high and low spot with the help of Kelli reading the dial indicator. It's only .010 off so new .007 dowels are on the list.

I dressed the engine not only for the photo but to work on new plumbing. I have two oil lines, oil sender, and Z bar in this area. To say it's 10 pounds of **** in a 5 pound box is an understatement. The headers are tighter than they look as well. I've got a solid gameplan together so I can still utilize the mechanical clutch and plumb it as planned. I planned to plumb the accumulator in the small plug but not going to happen. I'll have to get a one way check valve up by the radiator. The oil filter is close. Once the gaskets are in it will have 3/16-1/4. I'm going to put some insulation on each filter. The cermakrome coating really cuts down the heat. Jason seems to think it will be ok. I'm going to cut open the first filter and make sure it's not a problem.
http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa251/Payback1969/Update22810010.jpg
I finally finished wiring the Vintage air, all that's left is two duct hoses to the center vent. It compromises the stock glove box quite a bit. I decided to cut a stock box and use the scraps to make a glove box. It turned out pretty decent. Good place for the Ipod.

I wanted to weigh it but had no scale. Supposed to have been 500 lbs back in the day for a dressed big block ZL-1. I'd assume I'm a little heavier due to the AC compressor, larger oil pan, bigger headers... I'd guess in teh 525 lb range. Down from 675.
Thanks Mark, I was thinking about a shorter filter. Moroso also makes one that's a little shorter. We plugged the filter bypass so I need to make sure it's a good flowing filter.

I've been spending a little to much time in the garage lately. One day I spent 18 hours:_paranoid Couple nights until 3:30 or so. Anyway, this whole engine swap is about 15 times more complicated than it sounds. The new oil and cooling system certainly didn't help but I've basically reengineered most everything under the hood. From wiring harnesses underneath with heat wrap to all weather pack connectors. New clutch meant recentering the bellhousing. Minor fitment issues with the ac compressor brackets. Routing the AC and Heat hoses as cleanly as possible. Just a ton of work that won't look like much work when it's done. That's the key. My mind is so scrambled on the whole deal I'm just going to post up some photos I took. I've slacked on photos since I've been so busy out there. Once it's all done and polished up I'll take photos of all the changes and new look. It's going to be hot.

Tom -- Glad you posted that up - because I thought the exact same thing when I saw them -- they're not for "high amperage" draws. BUT the METRI-PACK stuff LOOKS just like the Weatherpack - so was thinking he was a smart boy and got it right.... For higher amp draws you have to go to the METRI-PACK... Having said that -- the fans might have a high initial amp draw (30 maybe) but I don't think they draw more than a continuous 20... BUT they accumulate dirt - and if they come on at "speed" that could have them drawing some pretty good loads.
Is there a sealed connection system that will carry more than Weather Pack's 20 amps?
Sealed Metri-Pack 280 Series connectors will carry up to 30 amps, and are available in one-, two-, and three-wire configurations. A sealed Metri-Pack 480 Series connector set is available in a two-wire configuration that will carry up to 42 amps. A sealed Metri-Pack 630 Series connector set is available in a three-wire configuration that will carry up to 46 amps.

greg ... thats exactly what im talking about !!! ... id suggest he gets the 480 or 630 series thow ... just from my experiance here in the desert. those fans will be on all of the time !!! and with the ac on it now ! ... i just like doing overkill on electric fan connections because of what ive seen with the factory stuff ! here in vegas

Thanks guys, It's really on a new level. There were a few things where it was midnight and I said that's good enough before just to get it on the road. As far as the connectors go, time will tell. The terminals are different for the 12-14 gauge wire than they are for 14-18. They are dual 12" spals and pull under 20 amps a piece.
http://www.spalusa.com/pdf/30102029_SPEC.PDF#view=FitH I've wired my ignition box with them as well. I can see where the water tight seal could cause an issue with overheating. None of the circuits are over 20 amps however. Like I plan to drive in the rain. I just like the cleanliness of the connectors and ease of disconnecting. I hate the connectors that come in the autowire kit. Sure you can fill them full of dielectric grease but they still suck. Removing the seals between the female and male connection would fix the deal in most scenarios I'd bet. I'll run them this way and keep an eye on it. That's about as much work as putting on my shoes at this point.

Todd, your car is looking awesome. I went back last night and went through this entire thread from the start. I can't believe how much this build reminds me of our build on paul's chevy II. This car just get's better with every new change and improvement and the fact it's has so much owner feedback on those minor tweaks and engineering parts that don't work is great for all who visit this website.. It's great to see the other people on this board interact during this build and the helpful info we can share with each other.Keep up the great work . Any chance you might be coming to gingerman? Would love to see it . take care Joe.

Thanks Joe. Pauls car turned out sweet. To be honest, my skills and knowledge have progressed rapidly with the car. I'm really getting into the details now. I really enjoy the design and engineering of some of the systems. I never thought I had much of my Dad in me(He's and engineer) maybe I was just to busy drinking beer and raising hell back then to get interested. It's going to be tough for me to get to the midwest with the car. Someday I'm sure I will but no plans at this time. Definitely planning to run a local autocross on the 27th and El Toro on the 3rd. Then I have to get back to work.

Thanks I think. haha
I'm waiting for a few parts to trickle in so I tackled the rear sway bar. I started out with a generic Hellwig kit and figured out it wasn't going to work of course. :unibrow: The fuel lines are right in the way and honestly routed the best way. I decided to design some brackets where I could sandwich the frame and use a tab for the end link. I designed them with a tab thinking it would be OK. After I got them home and started playing around I realized the bar angle was going to be to much. So I cut off the tabs and decided to use the center hole. I used two shoulder bolts on each side to keep from crunching the frame. The end links are aftermarket C5 adjustable end links. I'm excited to loosen the rear of the car up and have some adjustment. I really think it's going to be a huge plus on some of the slower autocross corners. I can't say I felt it needed it on the road course but time will tell as I get faster. I also am going to try a .25 wheel spacer shown. The other side has a worse rub than this side as you can see at the top of the wheel well and lower bar. With the low ride heights and racing I feel the wheel needs to be cheated to the outside vs. inside. Hopefully this .25 extra will get me just enough.

Nice--as always. Was the bar angled down too much? I had to make longer stands/mounts on the rearend to get mine to sit as level as I could--it still has a bit of a downward rake. Left mine on the front holes, figured I would change it around a bit at the RTTH deal to see how what a diff it will make.
What about spring rate in the rear now? With the bar back there, will you consider going to a lighter one? Thinking about trying it on mine--but need to get it around a track first--unfortunately that will be April 3rd.

03-14-2010, 07:32 PM
Ya, way to much. I didn't think of modifying the rear mounting points but still think I would've went this way just to keep everything tucked up tight. It's going to be interesting with the 150lbs off the nose and rear sway bar. I can tell you the car already sits at least 1/2" higher in the rear vs. before with the jackstands this way. I'm still missing the hood, exhaust, seats, headers but I'm going to have to tweak all the coil overs. It's going to be alot like starting over in driver feel and tuning and I wasn't that far along with the old set up.
It's amazing that all of these little changes have such big effects on the handling. Less wt up front, sway bar out back = totally different car from a tuning perspective. I can't wait to see how it does the first time out, but also to watch you get her dialed in.

Looks like Payback will be hitting the ground tonight. The bottom is done except for a couple fuel line and parts are being overnighted.
This corner of the engine is a major nightmare and a brain teaser. I have 2 oil lines, oil sender, z bar, clutch fork return spring/bracket, steering knuckle/shaft, and wiring on top of 2 1/8" headers. :willy: I have everything protected and this is as good as it's getting. I'm happy with it. It's not as spacious as the Nikon leads you to believe.

In these three photos you can see the other rats nest in the front left hand corner. It includes oil cooler outlet, one way valve, t fitting, accumulator plumbing, power steering feed, power steering pressure/return, cooling fan wiring, alternator wiring, and probably something I forgot about. The hose you see running just below the radiator is my accumulator 10AN. Wow Todd, everything looks great! Congrats on getting it wrapped up (or really close anyway)
I had one question though, your tow hooks in the back. In the picture the look verticle. If you hook on with them in the current position wouldn't it be pulling in the direction that would most likely bend the tab? I would think that in that position they would be the least resistant to bending. (as compared to horiz and pulling on the metal that way) Does that make any sense at all? Dammit! Now I am confused......:willy:
Now as a tie down point (pulling straight down on them) I could see them being very strong.

The rear tow hooks are 1/4 plate. It was a requirement of Redline Time attack so I drew them up and had them cut. I don't know if they would bend or not.(I'll find out soon) I plan to used a criss cross pattern in the trailer and have a front tow hook in the event I need help back to the pits. They may get redesigned eventually but my hands are kind of full right now.

Most of you know I've spent many many late nights and afternoons away from work trying to get my car back on the road. It's been almost 4 months since I pulled the old engine out! While swapping engine sounds simple, I can't make anything simple. I can't leave anything alone either. I'm to the point now where I'm doing over before it ever leaves the garage. If I don't like it, I start over. Anyway, here's a list of the changes I made.
Aluminum block and all that entailed:willy:
Oil cooler and all the plumbing
Cooling system to dual pass with internal heat exchanger
A/C
Heat
Custom condensor brackets
Made all my own AC and heater hoses
Re routing two wiring harnesses underneath
Adding weatherpak connectors all over the place
Rear sway bar with custom designed brackets and hardware
Custom coil bracket
Brushed valve covers
Custom water recirc tank bracket
Brushed all A/C/Heat fitting
Added dual breather tanks and brushed them
Different valve covers
Re routed fuel lines to come in from the rear and take all 90's out at regulator
Jet extensions
Recoated headers
Changed gates clamps
Brushed the air cleaner lid(Took two ) lol
And about 50 more I can't remember
I fired her up around 4 or so. I had the timing light ready but noticed the crank pulley was wobbling badly. I couldn't of left it loose. So off comes the belt and it turns out that a couple bolts that hold the ATI balancer together were sticking out maybe .015 of an inch. I had some brake caliper shims handy and put them between the pulley and balancer and it's perfect. Once I had that fixed I cranked the idle up to about 2k and set the timing consservative. Then the cooling system belched and I topped it off. Dialed the idle down and had a 3"x3" oil puddle after about 15-20 minutes. It's leaking between my one way valve and 45. I loosened and retightened and it still leaks. Brand new earls stuff. I'll get it figured out. Other than that it sounds great. The oil coolant temp was about 185 hot and the oil temp was 190. The heat exchanger is working perfectly.

LOL Larry, it's a nice car but I'd hate to see you sent up the river. :unibrow:
The canister is an accumulator. It holds 3 quarts of oil and is basically a cylinder with a piston. I start out by putting about 80psi of air in the gauge end and then bleed it off to 6psi. Once the engine is running it forces the piston all the way back to the gauge and if the engine loses oil pressure due to high g's the accumulator can supply up to 5 seconds of oil directly into the oil galleys. That's what the one way valve is for.(Causing my drip) I can also prime the engine by closing the valve with it running and opening it before the next start. It's probably over kill but it's to late now.
Looks Great Todd. My hats off to you for the level of detail. I've seen a lot of cars with 10 lbs of crap stuffed in a 5lb bag and they look like it. You made it all fit very well. Brushed aluminum has always been my favorite look. I bet you never thought back in 2006 when you were planning the car out that you'd still be working on her or it would ever be at this level? You'll never really be done, but that's the fun of it all. Great Job!!
You should take those nice valve covers over to a good machine shop and have "Payback" or "ZL1" or even both engraved into them.

I have the AX6's on all 4 corners for street and autocross. Was going to go more aggressive for the track, but if the 10's work up front and I can leave the AX6's in the rear, that would be a quick swap.

The interior is complete and vaccumed. I'm still waiting on my conical seal. Should have it tomorrow. I bought a set of Ring Brother hood pins about a week before I pulled the old engine. The car is done minus the conical seal so I spent a bunch of time getting the hood on as square as possible. It's the best it's ever been. Drilling 1 1/4 holes through my hood and radiator support was a blast. :unibrow: I decided to install the hood pin where the bump stop is factory. I then made my own bump stops out of stainless allen head button bolts and moved themat a 45 degree angle. Turned out sweet! Last time I raced the hood popped and I don't want that happening again! Yep, that's a chip in the header panel.

The car REALLY has turned out beautiful! I would love to be at El Toro to see it and all the other great machines but family must come first. And I have to ask, how many times over the years did you (if ever) screw something up before you got your fabrication skills to the point they are now? In my eyes you turn out the kind of work that comes out of the high dollar fab shops. "Where 'GOOD ENOUGH' isn't."

The verdict is in, this mother facker is insane. I took Kelli out of town tonight and dropped her in 2nd at 2500 rpm, looked over and said are you ready? She's like yep, gunned it and it dead hooked all the way to 6700 and I can honestly say I've never accelerated that fast in anything. Planes, roller coaster rides, motorcycles, atv's,cars, anything. We both giggled like junior high kids hitting the bong for the first time. Kelli goes, "Can we do it again?" I thought this car was fast before but it's night and day. Yep, we did it again. The rear sway bar loosened the car up big time. 3rd gear at about 50-60 and 3/4 throttle in a sweeper getting on the highway and the rear end decided it wanted to help me around the corner. Loose is fast but it's a little to much for my liking on the road course. It' will be great for autocross and I'll move it u p a notch for the road course. The car feels a little more nimble now. Effortless cornering at any speed. I'm a very happy guy right now.
My conical seal fixed my leak. I've got some carb work to do. I put about 100 miles on today and reset the bowls, changed teh power valve and a couple primary squirters. The drivability isn't great. I think it's due to the stagger jetting from primary to secondary. I knew it would need some tweaking. Cruising is good and and the secondaries are great. It's the partial throttle to more load. I think it's to lean on the primary side. I"m going to throw 4 jet sizes in it tomorrow night. It's actually pulling more vaccum than the hydraulic cam did on 4 degrees less LSA. I'll get it figured out.

Re: Driveability -- could it be the pump shot is not fat enough - rather than the primary side? The speed at which it should wind up - might be too fast for the pump shot (as is) to catch up to... Just a thought.
It's definitely on the primary side since it's only 1/4 throttle. It's got roughly 10hg at idle. It had a 4.5 PV in it since the old engine made 7-8hg at idle. I put a 7.5 in it and it didn't seem to help. Then I increased the primary squirter from 32 to 37 and it really helped. Going to a 40 didn't make much difference. I think the primary main jets are just a little to lean and and the squirter is actually to big just covering up part of the problem. I'm going to try 4 jet sizes up on the primary side and see if it helps. It's weird AED specs teh 850 HO with 8 jet sizes stagger betweent the primary and secondary bowl. We dropped the jet's 7 sizes on the dyno to make peak power but now I'm thinking with the extra efficiency and vaccum it want' larger primary jets. That carb was spec'd for the old engine builder and the crap he builds. If that doesn't work then I'll throw the thing in the garbage and call Patrick at Pro Systems. I've already changed the metering blocks as well. Fuel injection would be easier than tuning this thing by ear. I was going to put a Air/Fuel gauge in the car but couldn't package it in the dash. That would've helped.

Great story Todd. Happy for you man. :)

So is it falling on it's face when you stomp the pedal? Or as you "ease" into it?
You're right - if you already bumped the squirter up - then you could be masking a lean primary... usually I'd bump the squirter and or power valve if it "hesitated" as I jumped on it... because it's just there to help the "transition" as you open the blades up quickly (adding fuel to "richen" with no vacuum).
Typically - you divide the vacuum reading in half - gives you a good power valve size.
Lean - usually feels like you're running out of gas or a "flat feeling" to the pedal... and or a lean "miss". Funny how many people chase the ignition system when they're really feeling a lean miss...
I HATE carburetors... :>)

The highs and lows of building hot rods. I had a severe hesitation say 1/8to 1/2 throttle. I changed squirters, power valve, adjusted floats and finally bumped the primary jets up 4 and it ran great. So I bring it home and the idle starts getting erratic. Put the vaccum gauge on it to adjust the idle mixture screws to no avail. Thought mayble the new power vavle was opening at idle. I finally figure out that the primary venturis are dripping fuel usually meaning the floats are to high but I set them dead nuts. I pulled the site hole plug and theh primary was to high. Strange, so I reset it and it's doing it again. I watch the fuel in the bowl running and it's to low now. I finally figure out the needle is not moving freely in it's bore. (Possibly debris)So I finally get it running great and the needle craps out. To say I was pissed was a major understatement:lol: Anyway, I grabbed a new needle/seat, float, and gaskets just to be safe and bumped the jet up .001. I'd give it a 9.5/10 now. This car has never run this good. Changes I made to make it happen:
PV: 4.5 to 7.5 to 4.5 to 7.5 (Higher vaccum on this engine)
Primary Jets: 71 to 77 to 78
Front squirter: 32 to 37 to 40 back to 37
Rear Squirter: 37 to 40
Replaced needle/seat/float/gaskets
So another hands on Holley tuning experience. My garage smells like a gas tanker and one of my neighbors came over to complain about the noise. I've been working on this thing so long and much she thought I was running a shop!

I'd go broke working on these things. It takes 5 times longer than anyone thinks to do anything. Plus I'm an anal bastard. Eventually I may start taking on a project or two per year but I'll have to move first and the client would need to be very patient and loaded. I'm in no hurry to sell this one and start over. In fact, I doubt that ever happens. I work on it for fun but mostly neccessity. I'm sure it doesn't look that way but I'd rather be racing or cruising anyday. It just never ends with these which I'm OK with most of the time. LOL

Hey Todd, in my experience, usually when you make hp jumps like this, you find the weak links in the powertrain pretty quick. Are you worried about the TKO 600 tranny handling past 500-600 ft.lbs?

Nope, if it breaks I'll replace it.:D That t56 magnum looks interesting. I'm only exceeding the rating by 41 ftlbs. The block was only tested to 650hp in GM endurance testing and I'm 16.7 hp over that as well. Rules were made to broken. haha

It was more from curiosity that I asked. Hurst drivelines rates them at 600 ft.lbs so I wanted to see if they have a good reliability at or over that mark.

I asked the same questions before I got mine and felt very comfortable exceeding that rating. Due to the 1st gear ratio, I do wish I had gone with a T56 (or the new Magnum T56 now available) FWIW.

Most if not all manufactures will rate their equipment below what it can take. After all they have to warranty the product. The old test it till it breaks then give a 20% safety margin.

Payback is ready to be loaded up on the trailer. I just need to wipe her down. I bought new brake pads with different compounds front and back. Unfortunately I have to shim every caliper differently to fit these pads and I simply didn't have enough shims after installing the front pads. Dad and I went out to fill her up with gas and bed the new front pads. The brakes were as good befor bedding as the old pads were bedded! They are definitely a huge step in the right direction. I can't wait to get the rears on and get rid of these crummy Wilwood pads. I'll have more front brake come Saturday. I wish the back pads were on but that will give me something to look forward to next race.

brake pad question.
He switched to Carbotech XP10's up front and will be running there AX6's in the rear. Carbotech is known for having agressive pads that are easy on rotors.
I have not run a set of the XP10's, but I am runnng the AX6's on all corners. That is their autocross pad. I use it as my street pad as well. A little dusty and get the smallest amount of squeal on light stops. Great cold bite pad, has a .52 CF cold. My car has never stopped better.
I am looking for Todd to give me feedback on the XP10's as that is a track pad...that he is driving on the street.
Looking forward to updates from this weekend.

Hey Guys, I'm over here at DFresh's(Doug's) after a day of driving school at El Toro. The car has some serious bite up front now with virtually no heat. I did run around this morning looking for an ATM and they are pretty noisy. Not squeaky but grindy. Today went great with a mix or acceleration to stopping in a box, apex training, and a really cool road course. Tomorrow is going to be a blast.

My first run was my fastest on teh autocross and I NEVER run my best until 4-5 runs in so I felt like I really blew that portion. The car was just to loose. I made an adjustment after the road course and it slowed me down.
The car is probably a hoss. I haven't weighed it but it has a sub box in the trunk. I'm guessing 3300-3400. There will be some cool pictures coming your way. I should have one run of the Baer speed stop challenge on my go pro. Can't believe I forgot to charge it after last event.

I'm bummed that I didn't get any video of my road course runs. That would've been the most exciting stuff. I did manage to get one Baer stop challenge video from the morning. I also have one from Kelli's phone. If anyone has video of my car on the road course or Baer stop challenge, feel free to post it. I didn't have a cigarette lighter so I almost didn't get timed. Todd at Baer brakes really hooked us up with some stereo wire and some aligator clips after a run to Radioshack. Just to give you guys an idea of the performance it took to post the fastest time(13.94) I did a little research. I hit approx 103mph so I compared supercar 0-100-0 times. My time was faster than Lamborghinis, 911 Turbos, some Ferraris, you get the drift. I'm guesstimating approx 8-9 seconds to 100mph and 5-6 seconds to stop.I still think I can go faster with some shock adjustments and more experience.

From what I saw you looked really fast out there, and sounded even faster. I never heard the old engine but the new one is just plain nasty. Wish I got to see more of your group run, but unfortunately I was stuck with the slow guys like Rupp and Hunkins (until he got kicked out  )

While I'd like to claim I'm manly enough to wear around a pink hat, everybody that did a 360 during the event got their turn. It was fun. Those front pads didn't make a peep after the driving school on Friday. They must not have been bedded in properly. They are now. :D :D I put about 125 miles of pure racing on the car this weekend. The car stopped really well from cold to hot. As soon as I get rid of that pesky knockback issue I'm in great shape. It clearly wasn't an issue on the Baer stop challenge since I was going straight. On the road course I lifted that much earlier for the customary pump and let's not even talk about the autocross. I did have the ear of one of the head guys at Wilwood however. He watched me post the fastest time in the Baer stop challenge and he did say they are working on a floating caliper/or rotor just for my application.(Let me say it's not just a Wilwood problem, it's caused by axle/bearing flex) He mentioned Sema but I don't know which year. :unibrow: That's really all that's left to make a huge difference in performance. I think the car is still leaning to much but any changes in spring rate will effect the ride. Doubt I'll change it. Here are two videos I stumbled on. This was the last turn. As you can see, I lifted early on all the turns with a barrier. I simply didn't want to chance of wrecking my car. I love it when the flag man is ready to bail on the second video. haha

Nice vids again Todd, hey what is your opinion on those tires for the street vs the track?
Vegas69
04-05-2010, 05:20 PM
I'm really not sure what to think. I noticed a performance gain when I swapped wheels. However, I went from a stagger of 345/255 to 335/275. Also the wheels are lighter and I had Pilot Sports vs. PS2's. I'd say the performance gains are minimal until you get some heat in them. That would be road course or a smokey burnout before a drag race. Bill Howell said he felt the BFG KDW's actually hold better under braking in his car. I've been very happy with them across the board. I put a beating on them the last two weekends. I'll more than likely swap them for a set of BFG KDW's before my next Optima Challenge qualifier. Most of the guys are saying good things. They seem to be stickier than the 300 treadwear rating. They have a contingency program and I'd like to give myself a chance to race into the challenge. I'll keep running these until that next optima qualifier event or they are done. Once I've run both, I'll be sure to let you know my thoughts.

since you say the rear is a little loose with the new rear bar, you could go up in size on the front bar. splined bars are cheap...$100 or so. That would correct your loose condition and take care of the lean without killing your ride with a stiffer spring.
Spoke with a Maier and he stated that axle and bearing flex under heavy loads do cause the knockback along with changing the geomerty of the rear. He runs a full floater to take care of that problem.
You know you are getting close to having it set on kill when you bitch about the smallest of things. LOL
Vegas69
04-06-2010, 06:46 AM
That's definitely a possibility. I already changed the front bar once. I have plenty of room for shock adjustments still. I ran it in pretty close to street trim. I think the car needs more work in the autocross than the track. That TCI camaro is as flat as the day is long. I don't think a floater will work for me. My rear is narrowed so much I really think the lower and upper 4 link mounts will be in the way. I still think I'm going to try a 10psi residual or some 6lb caliper springs in the near future. If that doesn't work or it helps I may throw on the 1" bore master I have here. First I'm going to take the car out to a parking lot and give it hell and stop with the e brake. Then I'll make sure it's not just a RR or vice versus. I'll measure the knockback with some feeler gauges so I know how much I need to cure and pass that info on to Wilwood.

Hey Todd,
Any reason for going with hard fuel lines instead of a braided fuel line on your set up?
Vegas69
04-06-2010, 09:03 AM
The hardline only runs from approx. the rear end housing to the front wheel well. I felt that it may help with odor in the garage and give me a better chance of making it home after running over some debris. There is a small ding in one line from debris and I don't get the fuel smell in the garage so I assume it has helped. Steel braided fuel hose would stand a better chance than the black nylon I used.

Todd have you ever read the rear sway bar info from David Pozzi? Might give you some insight into correcting your oversteer issues.
REAR SWAY BAR?
There is less need for a rear sway bar on a multi leaf spring Camaro BECAUSE...
1. The rear roll center of the Camaro leaf spring design is inherently much higher than the front suspension, which is below ground level. This transfers cornering forces at the rear at a much higher rate compared to the front. The closer the roll center height is to the center of mass (at that end of the car) the more the cornering forces are transfered directly. (not through the springs or swaybars) to the tire tread.
This is why the old sprint cars with cross spring suspension didn't need swaybars. The roll center is about 1 1/2" below the center of mass, or mass centroid axis on those cars.
The disadvantage of the sprint cars high roll center is, if the cornering weight transfers automatically thru the high roll center. There is nothing the springs or shocks can do to absorb bumps and keep the tires from breaking loose (cornering). The car will act like there is a HUGE sway bar on it but the springs and shocks will not see those loads.
2. When a Camaro leans, it is twisting the stock leaf bushings. This adds a small amount of resistance to roll. If the bushings are solid aluminum, the leaf is going to be loaded in twist much more severely.
You can see this all adds up to higher roll resistance at the rear than you might normally think.
Later 80's Camaros had bigger swaybars on the rear but they have coil spring rear suspensions.
I am NOT saying you absolutely don't need a rear sway bar. If you stiffen the front much at all, you will cause the car to understeer and have to add a rear bar.
If the Guldstrand mod is done it raises the front roll center and adds traction to the front suspension at the same time. This combination may require addition of a rear bar.
The higher front roll center transfers weight when cornering similar to what the suspension does, but is independent of the suspension. If the roll center were raised to the same height of the front center of gravity (about 15") there would be no need for any front roll bar to prevent the car from leaning.
If the front roll center were raised HIGHER than the front center of mass, the car could very well roll the opposite direction in a turn!
Notice that on most rear bar kits, the arms are fairly long and the diamiter is usually small. The rear bar winds up making a small difference, if that difference balances an understeering car, fine. If not, it's not needed.
Guldstrand does not recommend adding inkage to the rear suspension, a rear swaybar or other stuff like panhard bars, or watts linkage. He feels it will wind up hurting rear traction on corner exit. I agree, except I have not been able to balance oversteer/understeer without using a rear anti-roll bar. I've seen cars with their suspension binding because of incompatable suspension "Add Ons" - usuualy traction bars. Make shure you aren't fixing a problem you didn't have in the first place. The best solution is a properly made leaf spring.
Wider and stickier tires on the rear of the car will increase the need for a rear sway bar.
More weight on the rear, or less weight on the front will increase the need for a rear sway bar.
This is just my opinion on the subject, of course you should do whatever works for you, but with the understanding of how the front and rear suspensions relate to each other. What you are after is a suspension that is compatable front and rear, balanced, and not binding or bottming heavily. If there is any binding the suspension is not tuneable.
Tire pressures adjustments can fix a lot as well. I'm running nitrogen in my tires now and it improved temperature variation at track days greatly. FWIW Guldstrand told me a rear swaybar is a bad idea with a big block car. He said understeer is my friend, and to dial in oversteer with tire pressures etc. Glad to see you out there enjoying it. Especially with the new motor. Love it and it definitely increased the desirability of your car should you ever sell.
I think I'm due for some engine bolt ons this year. Shooting for 800hp on pump NA. At least 650-700whp would be nice on tap.

Not sure I understand you question G356? Assuming you mean like it?
It's got magnaflow with dumps at the rear axle. Big blocks just sound great. :unibrow:
Marc, I am running the R888's and honestly have no idea about the sidewall stiffness. I've found them to be predictable.
Dane, no more saying I don't like to track my car. :D I beat the living **** out of this thing. This car definitely needs a rear sway bar. Keep in mind it's all aftermarket suspension with the DSE sub and Alston rear. I'm close on teh setup. The road course set up was really close. A little tight if anything. I changed it for the autocross and forgot to let some air out of the tires. It was just crazy loose. I'm going to try some shock adjustments next autocross with the rear bar in teh road course hole. Then tweak it with air pressure. 800hp NA is tough unless you run a massive cam, single plane, race gas, etc. The most average torque wins. This engine does that beautifully. Not only does it zing to 6800 easily, it makes power at 2500.

Yes....how do you fine the clutch working for you...feel, engagement, chatter, etc.
Vegas69

The only downside so far is you must be agressive from a stop light for no shudder. It doesn't chatter, or make a peep. The feel is good everywhere but from a dead stop taking off slow. Cruising or on the race track it's great. It's rated for 1000hp. I'd say I like it better than the Centerforce dual friction everwhere except a sunday drive around town(Don't do much of this anyway). The centerforce seemed to engage faster and was hard to control. It's no race clutch however. I'm still getting used to it. I'd probably go with the RST which is the organic version if you don't have over 600hp. After I told them what I had planned McLeod recommended the RXT due to the road race heat.
