For you guys running the DSE sub. Do yourself a favor and have them weld on the Z bar bracket. The inner fender makes this a real pain in the you know what. It's tapped and done right but......it was a last minute change. The clutch rod etc. is on the top of the list. She is a dirty pig right now and needs some touch up. Somehow the inner fender got all scratched to **** on the way here. Of course no steering was probably the cause.

The boys over at ATS have been treating me right. Here is the solution to my crossmember issues. They modified it with one of their T56 crossmember ends and moved the center bracket slightly. Of course it still needs painted. ATS is top notch. Highly recommend them.

I added fuel tonight to prime the fuel system and check for leaks. I had 4 leaks. Two at the carb bowls and the fitting on both sides of the pump. I used a pipe dope and the fuel ate right through it. Lucky me!! I had to disasemble all the fittings with the dope and replace it with tape. It's all fixed now but what a mother ######. The carb leaks were caused by a frankly crappy design. They used two gaskets with my high dollar fuel rail. I used the gaskets and tape and it's not leaking anytime soon.
Got a question for you, pm sent.

I just wanted to play with my new camera.
Lately I noticed a little coolant on the front of the engine. Never enough to leave anthing on the ground. I traced it to the water pump weep hole. 2000 miles on my Edelbrock Victor Jr. water pump and it's starting to drip here and there. They won't warranty it since it's over a year. So I pressure checked the system in an attemp to make it leak and found a nice little surprise. The front drivers side water port on the intake also had an external leak at 12psi. Should have it back together this weekend. I love this stuff anyway.

I'll probably start doing some work on hot rods and pro touring cars for fun and a little extra denero for my toys. Right now I just don't have the space or neighborhood for the work.

The second would be much easier. Bring it on down Wayne.
I'll be over at Red Rock Harley Davidson with the car tomorrow from 10-3. They are having a car/bike show. Any locals feel free to stop by and say hey and give me a vote. They are also having some cash awards for a few categories and it's public choice which is cool. Spent a few hours detailing so it should look decent. More info:http://www.redrockharley.com/

Ya...and I think my car is quiet.
I got the car back together last Wednesday in preparation for a car show at the local Harley Davidson dealer. I used my coolant system pressure tester after I installed the water pump and intake. Those two leaks were fixed but the gauge still dropped about a half pound in 2 minutes. I ended up needing to move a hose clamp and tighten another a hair and it held 16 lbs no problem. So the intake and water pump both definitely had a leak after inspection after removal. That's all fixed now.
Got up early Saturday and cruised over to the show. I actually entered multiple categories and had a great time. I must of had 7-8 friends show up to keep me company and the car was a huge hit with a nice crowd most of the time. It was a public vote show. Unfortunately the voting slips were inside the dealer and nobody I talked to around my car seemed to know anything about voting. I thought I had it in the bag. Afterall my friends all voted for me and I had a crowd all day. Boy was I wrong. I got beat by a 68 Pro Street Camaro!:D All I can figure out is that all the old farts that entered the show voted for that car or Pro Street is still king. That will be the last time I enter a car show. I was thinking on the way over there, I would really just like to keep driving. That is the best part of this car anyway. It looks hot but it drives outstanding.
I've been lucky enough to get the car out the last four days in a row and log a few hundred miles. I've been playing with shock adjustments and brake bias. I have all the rear brake in it and added a little more firmness out back. It's just the best car I've ever driven. It's a blast. I'm entering my first Autoross Sunday.
I did attract the hot chicks at the show. The local gun store had models. I was so dumbfounded when they all jumped in my car I didn't even get a shot. I did drag the best looking one over for a photo later. You can kind of see the Pro Street car by the right side of my hood in the last shot.

Figures that the one car I was the most critical of wins. In no way shape or form was that car cool other than it was a Camaro. The color sucked, the interior sucked and the stance was ridiculous. I swear it looked like someone puked in it....maybe there is a huge Pro Street movement that I don't know about....or understand.
What probably happend to you Todd is normal. A lot of shows are very political. You need to be in with the right people to get the votes. Peoples choice or not, a lot of shows are who you know. Maybe the wrong crowd was there.

Prepping the car for the autocross Sunday. I decided to clean both fuel filters since the car has a decent amount of miles. I also decided to figure out exactly how much fuel I have with the gauge on Empty. Ricks tanks show empty with 5 gallons in reserve I figured out tonight. I pumped all the gas out into a can with the fuel pump to simulate running out of gas. That ought to get me atleast 25 miles. :D Nice to know on a road trip.To my surprise the fuel filters were spotless. I must of done a good job of cleaning out everything originally. I'll pump the tires up to 40psi and I'm ready to go Sunday. http://www.myautoevents.com/pls/mae/frmEventDetail.Show?psevent_id=10025

I really want the Hoosier A6's for autocross but I do intend to run the optima challenge and drag strip for fun and don't and can't afford to buy that many compounds. R888 should work for everything fairly well.

The Forgelines are officially in production and I should have them in about 30 days with fresh R888 rubber. Can't wait.
I am running my second Autocross Sunday. There are some things I wanted to fix and tweak before this weekends race. I encountered what I believed was some brake pad knock back. Basically, I would go into the first corner with great pedal and going into the next corner I would have to much pedal travel. It delayed my timing and I eventually just pumped them once between corners. (like I didn't have enough going on) So I jacked up the car when I got it home and checked for pad drag. The fronts seem to have plenty of drag after parking the car. The rears however had barely any to none. I decided to install a 2 psi residual valve to keep the pads up against the rotors and creat some drag. Evidentally there is enough play in the rear end to cause some knock back. I can't feel any and have never had this problem on the street. This weekend will let me know if it's fixed.
http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa251/Payback1969/021.jpg
Upon inspection before the last autocross I found a leaky axle seal in the RR. It was starting to get onto the rotor and the drum brakes for the e brake. When the rear end was assembled whoever installed the axle seal must of used a seal driver that was a little small. As you can see in the photo the inside of the seal was caved in some and caused the leak. I can understand why...they are kind of a biatch to get in. You really need a seal driver kit with a 63mm driver. Axle is back in and the brakes are back on now.

http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa251/Payback1969/014.jpg
http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa251/Payback1969/019.jpg
Last but not least is I encountered enough wheel flex for the inside lip of the wheel to contact the shock bushing and housing in the LR. I also determined that my current setup will not work with my 18's. I have two brackets being cut at the water jet shop in the morning. I'm moving my shock mount in 2 inches for extra clearance that will keep the shock on the same plane with no bind and approx same length. A small ride height change wil need t be made but the rub will be gone and it will work for both 18's and 19's. The rear end bracket is 1/8 and I stepped it up to 1/4 just to be safe. The bracket will also have rounded corners and painted to match.

I enjoy the tweaking and dialing in of the car. Everytime I put a wrench on the car it's a little better. I've searched through many forums for ideas so I feel it's the least I can do to save somebody a headache.
The shock was probably 3/8" LR from the wheel. Bigtyme...feel free to steal the photo and send it to your local waterjet. They are only costing me $40. Let me make sure they work as intended first. I'll snap some pictures this weekend.

I won't be making the race. One autocross and I already have a torn upper gbar bushing and bleeding the brakes I see a few bubbles where the machined surfaces meet RR. The two center bolts feel bottomed out or cross threaded. You can acutally wiggle the center bolts that hold the caliper together. All three other calipers feel seated and won't wiggle of course. It has great pedal and will hold for 2 minutes but after 2 mintues there is just enough to wet your finger. So you guys with stock g bar links might as well upgrade now if you plan to drive your car. I'm going to request a new caliper from Wilwood since it's clearly an assembly problem. What a buzz kill!:D
The good news is the residual valve has gave me the brake drag I need and the brackets turned out sweet. Time for a bud light.

Sunday is a no go. As soon as I get them both installed I'll snap some photos bigtyme.
The good news is, next race I'll have my Forgelines and R888's! I might as well upgrade all my end links out back because I will find every weak link and clearly the urethane bushing aren't going to hold up to my abuse. For a weekend cruiser yes, for some racing, not even close. Especially once I have my R compounds. Really wishing I would have went Quadralink right now. I'll have way more invested in this rear suspension with new links and a sway bar. It should be bullet proof however.

Found some photos from the Autocross 2 weeks ago. This was coming out of the longest straight so it was a very fast corner. Car looks pretty decent. Once I get the tires more evenly matched and R compounds I'll get some new photos. Have a feeling a rear bar is going on after the race rubber.

Todd,
Looks like a nice big auto-x.
Did you like the layout?
Down the road, would you switch to an aluminum block?
Vegas69
05-12-2009, 10:27 AM
It was a large track but a pretty touch layout with the slalom at the end getting progressively narrower. Of course I would prefer an aluminum block but that's 5k. Then I might as well go 540, mechanical cam, blah blah blah. The motor I have is so strong I won't mess with it unless absolutely neccesary. The race wheels and tires I have on order should make a huge difference by narrowing the stagger gap, lowering the rotating mass, and adding much more grip. The car really handles well on the road. That being my first autocross with street tires, I feel with my tweaks and becoming a better driver I can be very competitive with my big block. Keep in mind that I have aluminum heads, radiator, hinges, all my resorvoirs, battery in the trunk.etc. So it's like having a small block up there. In fact I am running small block springs with no coil bind. That being said if I do grenade the motor it will be hard not to go to an aluminum Dart block. My favorite is still a aluminum big block with a hogan intake. But that means atleast 10k and I have to much money in this car already.

Still off the road waiting on some end links and a caliper. First batch was wrong. My last update included a residual valve to help with pad knock back I had during my first autocross. I've heard that it may not solve my issues. I hope it does, but I wanted to make sure it was the rear causing me issues. I also wanted to take some measurements with a dial indicator to find out just how much axle travel and bearing play I have.
LF .001 RF .001
LR .013 RR .010
I cinched down the rotor with lug nuts and divided the front measurment and used the whole rear measurment. I can definitely see with the added load of autocross how the rear end play could grow to at least double my measurments. I'm going to check specs on end play with moser.0 If my residual valve doesn't fix my problem, I'll be looking for some bearings that will give me less end play.

So is that a flat square plate that you bolt on that offsets the shock mount inboard? Any pictures unassembled? My lower shock mount is pretty close as well.

Thanks tone...I would love to have fuel injection. One of these days.
Ed...it's just 1/4 plate with rounded corners cut out of a water jet machine. I even had him cut the bolt holes with the water jet. Cost me under $30. The rear end housing is 1/8 plate. I'm not sure if it will effect the handling or have any other adverse effects yet. I do know that the stock setup will not work well in a racing or high load enviroment so you many as well change now. I really think it's axle end play that causes the issue now that I'm up to my eyes in brake pad knock back. It' really the easiest way to do it without any bind or a different length shock. I noticed the new G Link has the shocks mounted more vertical so that did give me the idea. I tried a set of mustand g bar lower shock mounts and the angle is off. I didn't snap any pictures before I mounted them. It moves the shock mount in 2". You could fabricate a new bracket that didn't move it in quiet as much but you would need to use a double sheer mount with a sleeve. I really don't think I'll experience any changes in ride or handling.

I found my brake pad knock back problem. I have to say I'm a little dissapointed in Moser Engineering and Wilwood honestly. These guys are in bed together and their products should work together. I figured out that I have .020 clearance between by bearing retainer and bearing outside race. So the bearing and rotor are sliding back and forth .020 before any bearing flex. I'll add a shim behind the bearing and it will fix it. I am going to call Moser out on the carpet in the morning.

It is truly a custom applicaton where a tweak here and there can make your next drive that much better. I can't wait to get this thing on the track with my new forgelines and a predictable brake. After a pow wow with Matt over at Moser Engineering, I'm pointing my finger at Wilwood. As he stated, they haven't reinvented the wheel here. The big ford end and the bearing are ford parts. I think the retaining plate is the issue. He thought I should shim it on the outside so it would be the way it was intended and would maintain all my axle mesh. Payton, since your problem started after installing the Wilwood kit it just reinforces what moser said. Measure your end play this weekend and hopefully we will need the same shims. We'll get some made. He did say he would call his Wilwood rep and make it known. I'm calling them later if I have time.

It's possible that the retaining plate has been tweaked as well causing the slack. We need to be careful with to much preload since it does hold on the backing plate as well. Let's get on the same page after I talk to Wilwood and you tear into yours. We'll get this whipped.

I've got a ton of time in this car. Not just rolling around underneath but planning. The car was a super nice start.
The car has been up on jack stands for to long now for 4 link bushing fatigue and brake pad knock back. I have both issues resolved I think. Here is a look at my stock G Bar/Air Ride bushings after 2200 miles and one autocross.
http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa251/Payback1969/003-5.jpg
Clearly I have compromised both bushings especially the triangulated bushing. When I ran the Autocross I had no rub in the morning and made some adjustments in the afternoon and developed a rub. The bushing is suspect at best and I think the extra stress forced it's hand.
So I decided to upgrade my end links and upper control arms so adjustment would be a piece of cake. It sucks that I have to basically rebuild my rear end. It's for two specific issues. Let's start with the brake pad knock back. I had .020 and .023 axle end play with the Wilwood retaining plates. Well I have finally got Wilwood to admit there is a problem. There is no preload on the bearings and they have something in the works. (Where is my jack off symbol) Anyway, Currie makes a new retaining plate which you can see in the pics below. Way thicker and a larger lip to compress the bearing. After ripping apart my LR the Wilwood retainer was tweaked. I dont' baby this car but I'm disapointed. I insalled one axle and my end play is down to .006. Very nice.
I also started from scratch on my end links and upper control arms. I decided ot piece together the upper arms and make them stout and more adjustable. I sawed off the lowers, tapped the threads, and installed the new links. (It's more work than it looks like) I ended up repainting them since they had to be in the vice for cutting and tapping. Teh end links are kevlar/teflon mix. I want my **** bullet proof.

Nice job on the end links. I saw this coming and replaced mine with a Johnny joint. I had mine cut and threaded by a local machine shop for next to nothing:yes: . Did you have to remove the end bearing to get that retaining plate on? I'm going to be in the same boat soon and wondered what it takes to get those pressed bearings off.
Vegas69
05-29-2009, 10:40 PM
It takes about $125. LOL If you haven't built your rear end, buy the plates from currie to start with. Scratch that, buy them anyway and press your bearings off and back on. They will need to install new retainer sleeves for the bearings.

Thanks Tone...it's really just experience. I did get a 2 year degree in auto and was a line tech for a couple years. That was a good solid base where I'm pretty capable of anthing from bumper to bumper. Building these things is nothing like working on regular cars. It's all about tweaking and coming up with solutions that look good and work well. For me so far a lot of it has been fixing problems from parts manufacturers and other individuals. Some of the bugs have included:
Engine builder isntalled wrong distributor gear
Intake leaked water external
G bar end links just aren't worthy of the track
Wilwood brake caliper leak
Wilwood retainer plate mis engineered
Axle seal mis installation
Edelbrock water pump leaked out weep hole
1/2 height body bushings I wasn't aware of
Broke two oer emergency cables before I switched to lokar
I'm sure there were other issues. There have been things I've done that needed redesigned or tweaked as well.
Had to redesign the fuel system with about 5 miles on the car
Hooked up the rack backwards and blew out the seal(Assumed red was high pressure not yellow)
Had oil fitting leak at the remote oil filter mount needed tape instead of sealer
Sure many more.
At the end of the day it's just little stuff and part of the game. I'm sure I've been much luckier than most. Not bitching one bit. Everybody that has actually touched the car did and awesome job...Prodigy Customs, Findlay Customs, ATS
Hi Todd,
For such an incredible car the list of issues does seem short. I can understand the frustration with having to re engineer parts. I have had to re engineer drawings from engineers in the construction arena. And I only installed the stuff. Some things look better on paper huh?
I agree with tone. Open a shop. "If you build it, they will come":D

I have a little time before my race tonight so I thought I'd update my thread. After my last post race inspection I found a RR axle seal leak and had severe brake pad knock back on the track. I replaced both axle seals and while bleeding the rear brakes notices bubbles coming out between the RR caliiper halves. Frank at Prodigy and Wilwood were kind enough to warranty that caliper. To fix the pad knock back issue I had to press of and on the bearing for a plate with a larger lip. (Wilwood is designing a new plate now) I also tore up two of my upper link bushings and switched over to a kevlar/teflon end link which should get rid of the bind. That required re centering the rear end and setting the pinion angle. I aslo had some plates water jetted to move the coil over mount in 2 inches to clear my 18's and 19's. While I had the calipers off I figured it was time to put a short brake hose in the system so I can pull the calipers without bleeding the brakes.
So my Forgelines show up. Gorgeous....bolt them on and the front hit the caliper. Tried jet nuts, and a spacer and just wasn't happy with the clearance. So I made the decision to change to 13" rotors and now I have a ton of clearance for both wheels. Of course that meant swapping out the caliper studs and safety wiring the new rotors. I also had to recenter 3 calipers since I changed front rotors and a new rear caliper. The mounting pad is thicker on the forgelines so I had to put in longer studs. That required removing the hubs and I went to a 2.5 inch stud which meant I have to run open ended lug nuts. So I now have a 1/8 spacer for the forgelines out back and the fronts just bolt on. I can run eithe rset of wheels with plenty of clearance.
This all took about 6 weeks and a ton of work!
Here is a pictures of the new coil over mount. It has alot more clearance between teh bracket and wheel. (Picture makes them look close)
http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa251/Payback1969/009-2.jpg
Here you can see the longer studs and smaller rotor. 14" rotors and an 18" step wheel don't mix real well. I needed to change rotors or go with a thicker pad on the wheel which meant less wheel lip. I never wanted 14" rotors in the first place and wanted to keep the lip.

It was a great night. The course was very technical and tight. The track surface was bumpy and loose. What a difference the race wheels made. The push was out of the car. Also happy to say the brakes were 100% better. The fastest sweeper the car stuck like glue. I ended up nosing out a new Viper and got beat by a Nissan Gtr by less than a second. The icing on the cake was there was a Mustang Super Snake at the event. He was slow but his buddy ask how much horse I had. I said 600. Well my buddy has 700. Cool....well I pull out on the interstate and guess who is in front of me. Up for the challenge we ran them up way into triple digits. Weak ass 700hp. It was a brand new super snake from my understanding. Claimed 700hp and the top of the line super snake is 725hp. I have my doubts after racing him on the interstate. I was reading this morning that the 725hp super snake will run high 10's with slicks. However, it is 4100 lbs. All I know is I pulled him really well the first time u p to about 130 and the second time he got a little jump and I got him by a nose. He just disappeared in my rear view mirror after that. It was really fun and I'm glad I'm not locked up in the pokey.

I've got an 06 Mustang, as well as a Camaro, (I don't discriminate with muscle cars) and have wasted quite a few hours getting to know Mustangs, before really getting into pro-touring. In the video you posted, the car looked like a regular GT with a Roush body kit, and maybe a blower, from the sound of it at the end. Unless he's got forged internals, I doubt he's putting down more than 450rwhp, which explains why you blew past him. Hey, he probably felt emasculated by that sinister looking 69 of yours and had to say something
BTW you really make wish I'd gotten brushed hoops and my forgeline ZX3s, the new wheels look killer

Thanks guys! Your right Matt it wasn't a super snake. I found out it's an 07 GT with the body kit. However, it has been turned into a stroker with a turbo.
I just watched the video Todd, the car looks like it ran awesome! In the vid it looks like there is about ZERO body roll. How is the ride on the street with the current set up? Nice work on the track!

Really nice actually. I have the front shocks as stiff as they will go and it still rides nice. The back has 16 positions and I run it at about 12 on the track. I dial it all the way back to 3-4 and it rides really plush. The last two times I autocrossed I got about 2 miles and pulled over and crawled underneath the rear for a few seconds and on my way.

yeah thats a big part of the DSE sub and g-bar that amazes me, the way todds car rides on the streets.
with how nice and comfortable the suspension is on the streets you'd NEVER expect it to react the way it does when its put to the test... :unibrow: :unibrow:
and thats one of the big differences with just using a stock sub and great leaf springs, yes youll be able to hang with the 4/3 linkswith aftermarket subs on the track but to do that you have to sacrifice ride quality on the streets:(
i just look at it like if ya got the money the deff. go with 4/3link with a aftermarket sub.
todd i gotta come see the race look in person soon!
It sounds like a really cool set up Todd. I'll have to go back through my suspension after I get it on the road and do some better upgrades. For now it will be upgraded leafs and everything in front but the stock sub. Down the road I hope to be able to do a trick rear set up. For now the drivetrain is eating up a big chunk of the budget. I spoke to Jason Rushforth today and got my wheel choice figured out and am working on the brake package.
Rushforth Rated X 20x10 rear and 19x8 fronts with black centers and polished lip. 285/35/20 and 245/40/19 tires.
Can you guys suggest a good street tire that will stick in dry weather but at cooler temps than you have down in Nevada?
Thanks,
Eric

Thank you sir...and you definitely need to come over soon. You need to get out to my next autocross and ride along. How you been man?
I'd just go with the R888's and call it a day. If I had it to do all over again that's exactly what I would do. I haven't driven the car in sub 75-80 degree temps but it really has nice grip even when the tires aren't warm. Bad news is they don't make them in a 20". I wouldn't run that big a wheel if you plan on racing the car at all. And I don't care what the new ZR1 has on it.
It won't be "raced". Maybe a couple of open track days at most. It's being built to run on the street and have fun with. There is a fair amount of rice grinders around here that I want to play with. Just out of curiousity why would you not run 20's if it were to be raced?

Lack of sidewall and r compounds. I was once at your stage. I didn't think I'd race mine much either. Now that's all I care about. lol If you race it and your hooked your stuck with 2 sets of expensive wheels. (Ask me how I know) Now is the time to decide if your willing to take that chance. Personally I'd go with a 19/18 stagger since many performance tires are available. I get pulled over everytime I drive the damn thing on the street. I have the traffic ticket guy on speed dial and I'm on his Christmas list.
What you're saying makes good sense Todd. I'll have to re think my wheel sizes. I didn't realize there was such a limited range of tires in the 20" size. A 18/19 stagger would still look great and give me a bit more sidewall and a broader choice of tires too. Once again Todd, you have given me some great advice. Thanks.
As for the getting pulled over, I have a couple of friends in the city P.D. and a couple more who work for the county sherrif dept. I met them while I was out tearing it up on my bike. Now we are great friends. My wife is my insurance agant, if I get any more tickets I am effed!:D

Project number 1,028:D
Venting a rear end and fuel tank on a 69 Camaro is very difficult. I should say it's very difficult if you want to vent your fuel system correctly without vapor lock or overheating the pump. I've been running K&N's for both as high as I could get them which wasn't good enough and I knew it. I know I was losing some gas at a little grease. Of course autocross and plans to road course really forced my hand. Plus at no miles per gallon it's not fun losing a few ounces here and there. So anyway, I designed a venting system for both the rear end and fuel tank.
I was very important to me that I kept my 8 an vent. Your fuel vent is supposed to be equal to your feed line and I wasn't going to compromise. I picked up a couple plan jane coolant overflow tanks and tapped them for 3/8 npt top and bottom, the rear end tank got tapped 1/4 npt since I used 6 an for it. I ran all AN fittings, bulhead through the trunk, then vented the tank at the top through grommets into a 1/2 and 3/8 K&N. This will hopefully allow me to top off the tank with no spillage and I'll have a quart capacity in the overflow tanks. The gas tank and rear end are well below these tanks so it should solve any spillage and it look pretty damn cool too. I even used the leaf spring shackle bushing hole for support. That's really a pretty tight spot between the frame rail and quarter, it looks large in the photo. Just to give you a feel those K&N filters are 4 inches across together. Probably have about 10-15 hours in design, fabrication, and assembly.

Ever since I mounted up my Forgelines I've had a pull to the right. I've been meaning to add some negative camber to the car since it was set up at a conservative .5 on both sides. Somehow I now had R.375 and L.75 degrees on negative camber. Clearly the almost .5 degrees is the problem. I haven't got out and bought that swamp cooler yet, so I've been spending more time talking about cars than driving and working. I decided to head out there tonight and play with my new bubble gauges and toe plates. I had the camber set at 1 degree per side in like 10 minutes. I have 3/16 toe out currently which is a probably a little to much. I'll save that for another rodeo. Took her out for a 30 mile cruise and she drives beautiful and straight again. The extra turning radius is a bonus. I'll probably lift the front a hair when I reset the toe.

I'm definitely getting better gas mileage. However, when I park after a drive and the tank releases pressure it will piss a little. I'm going to try a vented cap and if that doesn't do it, I'll rerun the vent hose with two loops in it. It is alot better than the old setup. The rearend vent works perfect.

Thanks.... I spent the better part of yesterday afternoon trying out Zaino. It's labor intensive but the car really turned out nice. It's looking just as shiny or shinier than ever. I also had some clear bra installed behind both wheels up to the body line for protection with the R888's. Went out this morning for breakfast and a run around the lake. I haven't had a chance to shoot any decent photos since the wheel change. I need to add a couple loops to my new venting system as you can see. It doesn't seem to leak while running since a vaccum is being pulled on the tank as fuel is consumed. I knocked down 9 miles per gallon city/highway. You can also see the new gbar coilover mount setup. I ended up adding a third bolt for safety and looks.

The brakes still have a little knockback, but it's managable. It's barely noticable on the street.
The Zaino is really a pain in the ass. I spent about 4-5 hours on the car. The polish that I first used called the z5 is supposed to fill in minor imperfections and light scratches. After the first application, the shine was very noticable. I then reapplied it and finished with the z2. I really can't say I noticed any extra shine after the final two applications. The z2 is supposed to be the last step and it has sunblock. The z2 was also very hard to get off compared to the z5. We'll definitely have to get out for a ride. I have a race coming up on August 23rd in Primm.
The car really isn't finished. I still need to add the AC and something for the Ipod. I'll also be adding an accumulator, oil cooler, and possibly a 2 pass radiator soon. I think the tweaking part of the build is my favorite. At the end of the day, it's a custom build and it takes miles to make them reliable enough for the street, let alone the track.

FUeL is great just finished up a conversion to a full DSE front clip, mainly to get a bigger (wider) front wheels. But also added dual adjustable shocks front and rear. With all that, needed new front brakes to fit the new front and that of course rolled into new wheels ...HRE's again all around. Few other tweaks in there as well. Like anything took a bit longer then expected. Really worked out good however as I sold all the 'old' stuff for a good price for both myself and the buyer.

I was supposed to run another autocross tonight but it pissed all day up until about 2 pm. I looked at the forecast and they said 70 percent chance of rain about an hour before I had to leave. So I skipped the race since it was 45 minutes each way and I didn't want to destroy my clean car. Of course it didn't rain a drop. So I went out on a lonely desert road and just beat the piss out of my car.:D 0-60 0-100 130mph sprint 75-0 etc. Pretty sure I had more fun than the autocross would have been. That's the most fun I've had with my shorts on in a while.
I also added two loops to my vent hose and that seems to have fixed the discharge at close to full tank. I changed the squirters on the carb to the next smaller size and it's never run better. It's super crisp. Car is a flippin beast. It just plain rips.

You should get one of those RaceLogic Performance Boxes (P-Box) and time your 0-60, 0-100, 60-130, etc. I got one and will get some numbers on the Camaro when it's done. I got it for the Porsche since everyone in the modded Porsche world compares their 60-130 times. It allow an apples to apples comparison and takes traction issues out of the equation like with a 0-60. I wanna see how some nicely modded musclecars compare to the quicker times for comparison.
It really is a cool little device. I got a slightly used one for about $400.

I'm preparing for my first road course event this Saturday. I'll be running the 3.2 mile loop out at spring mountain ranch in Pahrump where the Optima challenge is held. I need to get my accumulator plumbed and working, at least one tow hook made, and a couple other miscelaneous things before Saturday to pass tech. I was hoping to have my oil cooler set up done before my first event. I've been in touch with Ron Davis but haven't pulled the trigger yet. I'll just have to run hard and pull off the track and watch my temps. Once the accumlator is working ,I'll have 10 quarts of oil in the system so that should help some until I figure out exactly what direction to go with the oil cooler.
I've decided I like the original look of the car better. It's just to damn black with the new wheels and I like the 19" wheel out back. I've been kicking around narrowing my rear bozes and widining the fronts and sticking r888 rubber on them as well. I just can't bring myself to bolt the bozes back on with those pilot sports. Todd, that sounds like a ton of fun. So what is all needed to pass tech inspection on a road course like Spring Mountain?

They really pop against the black...in pictures anyway.
I know there is a better selection on rubber in the 18 sizes, but I like the look of an 18 front, 19 rear on a 69. One of the reasons I have not changed mine out yet.
I would like to see your race wheels in a full polish.

They were really intended to be "Race" wheels until I got the taste of some real traction. I'll throw the Boze's back on after the race this weekend.
To pass tech for this sanctioning body in particular:
Snell 2000 an up helmet
Fire suit 3.2 A/1
Neck collar 3.2 A/1
Extinguisher bolted to the car within reach and over 2lbs (Specified Chemicals)
Roll bar minimum of 1.75" for my weight(Roll bar not required but must be porper size
Tow hook front or back
Since they mandate a maximum tire width of 285 in the street class, I had to go to the modified class. That brought a few extra rules into play. Here are the rest of the rules. http://www.redlinetimeattack.com/Uploads/RedlineTimeAttackRules.pdf

They just have no grip compared to the r888's.
I highly suggest running your first few events on the Pilot Sports. New drivers shouldn't be learning on R-Comps. It will be a crutch for you and you wont be getting an accurate idea of the limits of your car, your driving and grip. Then again I don't know what your racing experience is....
I think a lot of people in the pro-touring world have a tendency to overthink speed parts, mods etc. Go out there and have fun. Once you get lapped by a 123rwhp miata you'll realize that your car, its parts, and all the engineering you've done don't mean a thing. Its all driver skill. Seat time is the best investment you can make...
Start attending more HPDE events. That said I'd like to drive out to Vegas and run Spring mountain with you one day...

If I'm hooked, I'll spend the money on their driving school. You should, it's supposed to be one of the best tracks around.

Its not a question of IF you'll be hooked, you will be. The only problem I forsee is your pretty expensive paint job. You might want to clear bra the hell out of that car if you haven't already. I expect my car to be paintless by the end of next year from so many rock chips at the track. Dick Guldstrand told me that if you're not sliding off the track you're not driving fast enough so be prepared for that as well
Go out and get a bunch of seat time and instruction, its an absolute blast. I'd love to see another pro-touring car actually out at HPDE events ripping it up. I'm a little bit sick of these $100k pro-touring cars 'racing' at 35mph autocross events...
Drive your damn cars folks, thats why we built them like we did
I should have my tremec in by then. Their safety requirements are a bit more than the group I normally run with. Firesuit, neck collar, roll bar? I guess thats because of the class they're forcing you to run in.
I'll keep an eye out for events up that direction. I typically run with Speedventures.

Forgelines won't be changing. I like the wheels alot, but they are my track look. I modeled the car after the boze wheels. I have clear bra'd behind both wheels up to the crease in the body. Not everyone has the ambition to race and they may not have built their car for that purpose. That wasn't my original intention when the project started. I've just come to the realization that I have waaaay to much performance for the street to appreciate safely. Now I'm making the changes needed to make the car as reliable and predictable on the track as I want it to be. I always wanted to get into circle track racing later in life. This may be the precurser to that or a faster form of road course racing. I'm not afraid to get some chips in the car since it already has plenty from running around town. Paint can be fixed or refreshed. I built it to drive! Last time I checked, that was the intended purpose of a car. :D You will see me in California eventually. I do want to trailer it that far in case of weather or a mechanical problem.
As far as the magazine deal goes, I haven't sent one photo to anyone but Steve Rupp in the construction phase. Steve said he would shoot it eventually and it just gets better and has more history everyday. I 'd rather it was down the road after I've run some road course events as so on. That wasn't the reason I built the car and I can care less about car shows and showing it off. The biggest car show in Nevada is this weekend and I'm racing. I also turned down a spot at a recent indoor car show at a local strip casino. It's probably to late, but I wouldn't be interested in a Sema spot at this point either. I'd rather she was sitting cozy in my garage where I may have the chance to drive! Now if it got me into teh optima challenge I'd have to suck it up. LOL

I hope you get invited to the Optima challenge. Last year was great event to watch but the 40 car field was a little soft.....ie; I could do without Barry White driving a Ford crossover  I think they hoped to get more cars and in the end they were left with some seat fillers. Hopefully they will select a full 40 cars like yours that are geared for this type of event:thumbsup:

The road course thrash has been on all week. I won't run a road course without an accumulator. (Poor mans dry sump) An accumulator will provide up to 5 seconds of oil pressure if the oil pump pick up is uncovered in a high g corner. After watching video at spring mountain, I know they have many 3-5 second high g corners. The accumulator holds 3 quarts and has a piston that reacts instantly when I turn the valve on. I won't use it on the street. I'll have to turn the valve off while running to store the 3 quarts. I can also prime my engine by opening the valve before start up. Pretty cool piece. It's frickin huge though. I had no choice but to mount in on the inner fender. I like the race look of it.
I plumbed it into the pressure side of the oil system. I found a trick three way an fitting from earls that allowed me to plumb it in on the return side of the filter.
I had some tow hooks water jetted as they were needed for tech. They are probably a little over kill but I figured I'll use them to tie down the car once I get my enclosed trailer.
I'm about an hour or two away from being ready to haul some ass around spring mountain raceway. It's going to be crazy. From what I hear, speeds in the 130-150 are obtainable down at least one straigtaway.
It's a frickin pig right now. I haven't wiped down the frame and so on for a while.

Todd, I agree with rogue and the street tires first. I know the pilots suck, I have the same tires, but with them you can drive the car up to and beyond the limit to get a true feel for the car. My fastest laps have always been right after an off track excursion. With the R888, I have them also, they can mask driving error and give, at least for me, a sense of being super man. I have only used the r compound at two events. I am a little nervous at finding there limit, as I know it will be at a much higher speed and pucker factor. Learn to drive the car first, then compliment your skills with better tires.

scary words... read them again. R-Comps won't talk to you like street tires, you will end up sliding off the track before you know it. They don't give a driver feedback at the edge of grip. I learned this lesson many times over myself with my car, and I'm SO glad I have a single stage earl sheib job. Just trying to keep your nice shiny paint job shiny and save a fellow Lateral-G member some heartache.

I will disagree to an extent. toyo r888 have great grip but they are not in anyway shape or form dot slick tires, the offer really good feedback and are merely a sticky street tire, can be used in all weather.
I have driven every track day i have done with them, they give you confidence, but yet screech when nearing limit and come back quite nicely when you turn down the wic some.
while comparing to pilot sport II's they are day and night, but there are a few street tires that stay up with the toyos in short track burst's up to 10-15 mins, after that the toyos will hold much better.
just creep up on the edge as the day goes on, and you will be all good.
