Thanks guys. I am not sold on it either Steve. It doesn't look as shiny without the flash and I have yet to trim some of the ends. In fact Tyler thought the power steering lines were the same AN hose I am using everywhere else. One day I like it the next:D It's really hard to cut it straight. It looks good on the power steering lines since it's a smaller diameter and that is the same material I am using on the wiring. I may just end up cleaning up the hoses and shining them up a little. Heater hoses and AC lines will probably be the deciding factor on the radiator hoses.

why not use the little heatshrink type hose clamps... they you can have the mesh over the hose but the ends will be covered and look finished? amd imo they are the cleanest looking clamps.

Thought about those actually....tough to get a heat gun on the water pump inlet and not sure I trust them in the long run. I like the look of the NHRA approved clamps I am using. They aren't going to let me down.

I think Steve is running those on Penny and we know he doesn't run crap.

Steve is where I got the idea to run them....... and we both know how nice his car is done. With a small block or big block you can't get to the back side of the clamp on the water pump to apply heat like you can on an LS. My breather tank and catch can are using the exact same clamps as I am using on the hoses. The mesh will go before the clamps. Plus those boogers aren't cheap like regular hose clamps.

She is alive. Hooked up the dash panel and ignition switch so I could watch my oil pressure while priming the engine. Pretty exciting to see the fruits of my labor turn into something like lights. Turned over the engine briefly to check the starter shimming and it's perfect.

Primed the oil pump for quite a while to make sure I had no leaks. I am running braided 350 hose and a remote oil filter on the front passenger frame. Everything looks great. The distributor is now stabbed and spark plug wires are done.

For you guys running the DSE sub. Do yourself a favor and have them weld on the Z bar bracket. The inner fender makes this a real pain in the you know what. It's tapped and done right but......it was a last minute change. The clutch rod etc. is on the top of the list. She is a dirty pig right now and needs some touch up. Somehow the inner fender got all scratched to **** on the way here. Of course no steering was probably the cause.

The boys over at ATS have been treating me right. Here is the solution to my crossmember issues. They modified it with one of their T56 crossmember ends and moved the center bracket slightly. Of course it still needs painted. ATS is top notch. Highly recommend them.

I added fuel tonight to prime the fuel system and check for leaks. I had 4 leaks. Two at the carb bowls and the fitting on both sides of the pump. I used a pipe dope and the fuel ate right through it. Lucky me!! I had to disasemble all the fittings with the dope and replace it with tape. It's all fixed now but what a mother ######. The carb leaks were caused by a frankly crappy design. They used two gaskets with my high dollar fuel rail. I used the gaskets and tape and it's not leaking anytime soon.

Late last night I realized the dash lights weren't working. The right turn signal also was not functional. I dug in this morning and found blown fuses in both circuits. I definitely had a short on my hands. For those of you that are not real savvy with electronics the key to finding the short is eliminating segments of the wiring that you think has the short. In these old cars it's a piece of cake. It turned out to be my brand spanking new right front parking lamp. They must of chaffed the wires during assembly. I unplugged it and everything is perfect. I'll probably disasemble it and try to fix it vs send it back.
My first view of the gauges at night. :D
http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa251/Payback1969/IMG_0871.jpg
I spent most of the rest of the night installing my emergency brake cable. Cut the lokar cables have everthing set up perfect. Push down on the pedal and it's rock hard and the wheels aren't moving with a breaker bar. About the third time it sinks to the floor. Pile of crap OER front cable broke third pull. :unibrow: So brand new OER parts are my two bugs to fix for the night. My works flawless.

Well I finally got my front brakes. Have to say Frank over at Prodigy Customs came through for me as always. 13" rotors have been on back order and he hooked me up with 14" for free. Keep in mind guys that I have spent a nickel or two thisyear with him so don't go asking. They are flipping huge!

I have only had time to install the drivers side. Had to buy C6 bolts from Chevy for the mounting brackets. I also had to clearance the spindle slightly with a aggressive file for the caliper bracket to mount flush. Plenty of clearance now and the wheels fit nice as well. Drivers side is all shimmed out and ready for some fun.

I need to play with timing and idle speed still. About a tea spoon of oil on the floor from one oil line at filter adapter after 20 minutes. Think they probably just need a littl more torque. I have since learned these fittings need to be pretty tight after my fuel fiasco.

As of right now, I can ONLY dream of having a nice car like that. Seeing the build process and how it all comes togther makes me really appreciate the hard work/time that you and others have spent on their cars. I can only wish I had a fraction of car knowledge as yourself. Seeing your car, Steve Rupps car & Jeff Hansons car, for example, and others,(don't want to leave anybody out), makes me want to call Fesler for a build!!! LOL!!

It's all alot of fun at the end of the day. It's way more work than most can imagine or can be documented. At least it is on these top shelf builds. You can't cut corners. It has to look great, function perfectly, and be reliable. Lot's of four letter words floating out of my garage somedays but it's still a blast. That is awful good company you have compared me to. I appreciate it.

Well after all these months I have steering!!!! Smooth as butter and looks great too.
http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa251/Payback1969/IMG_0930.jpg
I now have brakes too! Fought a couple leaks with the connections around the master cylinder. Loosening the lines and retightening them did the trick. I vaccuum blead them last night. The old lady let me borrow her leg. Brakes feel great, no leaks, really like the feel of them so far. DSE dash is fully bolted in along with the column, steering wheel, brake switch, drivers seat is in. When it's done I'll post all the photos.
Made a homemade bench bleeder.

I'd love to see what Tyler came up with getting the exhaust thru and out the back. I forgot to ask why you decided to go with an exterior fuel pump rather than an internal one. ...besides the $$. All looks very cool.... I mean bad.
Vegas69
07-24-2008, 12:37 AM
Well the good news is the stance is getting close and I finally got my crows foot for the oil lines. The bad news is I don't have steering again. I fired her up today and tweeked the idle. Man she sounds nice:D Look under the car after about 5 minutes and power steering fluid everywhere. I am pretty sure the steering shaft seal blew out of the rack!! Brand new. So looks like I'll be pulling the rack out...otherwise I would have been driving it tonight.:(
If I had it to do over again, it would have an internal pump. It turned out nice and it was to save a few pennies. The exhaust is not done yet. As soon as I get this rack problem fixed it's heading down his way.
Ahh, I hoped only good news! Did you find a wrench for the coilovers?

07-24-2008, 08:20 AM
Tyler at ATS came to the rescue again. He was nice enough to let me borrow his spanner wrench. Had to raise them 6 more turns. Plenty of clearance now. May end up lowering it a touch. Now I have to pull the rack out.

Turns out it's my fault sort of. The rack comes with a red and yellow plug. You guessed it....I assumed the red was pressure. Wrong! I almost called DSE and completley forgot. There are som many little things with these cars. Probably going to need a new rack and pinion. They aren't that expensive so no biggie. Just a little delay.

Curtis......found out the rack was junk so I didn't bother having you cross town. DSE is selling me a brand new rack at cost. They took care of me as always. It should be here today. Depending on how energetic I am tonight...it will be on it's maiden voyage by the weekend. Stance is pretty dialed in at this point. Need to get out the timing light so I can lock down the distributor. Also resealed the oil line fittings and haven't been underneath to see if that pesky drip is gone.

Vegas69
07-31-2008, 03:52 PM
Interior is last.....probably going to have an interior shop finish it off for me. I still need to get a sound system and the vintage air in there. I'll be driving it with sound deadener, door panels, DSE dash, dash pad, etc until I decide on back seat, stereo, etc. Shouldn't be a real big deal. The back seat is the only possible snag. Sparco doesn't make the material to match my front seats yet. It's not looking like it will be easy to match either. Waiting on two teflon washers and the rack is back in. I did a bolt check on the entire front end last night to make sure everything is torqued properly.

It's been a while since I updated my project. As some of you know I had some fuel system problems after a few test drives. Very noisy pump and low pressure when hot. Replaced the pump and it was junk out of the box.
I was very burnt out after working on the car nonstop since it showed up in April and haven't done much to it for a few weeks. The 100-110 degree temps will zap you pretty quick. After all this is supposed to be fun. I am ready to dig back in with fall and decent temps around the bend. I have redesigned the fuel system with new components and old. I will be running a return style system with the following components:
Feed: 1/2 npt to 10an
New Aeromotive shut off valve/filter 10an
Mallory 140 fuel pump
1/2 hardline and 8AN after pump
Holley return style regulator(Wanted to use the same bracketry)
1/2 hardline and 8 an return line into the top of the tank
1/2 to 10 an Vent from the top of the tank
I am still waiting on two 1/2 stainless fittings from Ricks so I can have ATS weld them in for my new return and larger vent. Ricks only puts a 1/4 npt vent standard. It should be atleast as large as your fuel line. As soon as I get the tank squared away I'll have it knocked out in a couple nights or a day.

I also had some major concerns about the fuel sender. The needle has always been pegged on Empty. Knowing I had 4 gallons in the tank I checked the resistance at my sender plug and found .5 ohms. That explains why it's pegged on empty. After a call to Hector over at Ricks Tanks I discovered that they have the sender off the tank floor more than I expected. Now that I have the tank out and the entire fuel system apart it was time to test it. I found nothing wrong with the sender. It looks like I'll have one hell of a reserve. :D That could get me in some trouble.

It's been a adventurous few weeks to say the least. Business had been crazy busy and I spent the better part of 2 weeks redesigning my fuel system to a return style system which included ATS welding in some stainless stell bungs. I ended up with a mallory 140 pump and three 1/2 npt bungs. Feed, retun, vent. I ran 1/2npt to 10an feed to the pump and 8an hardline and braided to the regulator, 8an and 1/2 hardline return to the top of the tank, 1/2 vent from the top of the tank. Everybody said it was overkill to run that size vent. I filled my car up tonight with the pump at full blast. With a 3/8 barb it would barely take fuel. Mallory really lead me in the right direction. Highly recommend those guys!
After all my fuel fun it was time to take her down to ATS for exhaust. Frank at prodigycustoms sent me my magnaflow system in stainless with 3" pipes and mufflers. After getting the fuel system dialed in and open headers I decided to drive her down to ATS. It's about 15 miles from my place. The car ran absolutely fantastic and I hadn't calibrated the speedo and was running 90-100mph down the I 15 into Vegas. Car felt so good! I get down to the frontage road to ATS and goose it to show off and slammed on the brakes to make the turn. The engine floods out and the headers catch fire from the excess fuel. Now the air cleaner catches fire. Luckily I grabbed my extinguisher for the ride and Tyler came running. I popped the hood immediately and we got it out before much damage. Well turns out the rear float level on a 850 holley being to high will dump fuel into your engine under hard braking especially to a stop. I had the pleasure of spending 4-6 hours sanding headers with soap, water, and fine steel wool, brushing floor boards, and replacing a couple wire loom nylons. I got so damn lucky . She's about 80% of what she was pre fire. Meaning detail wise.
So I pulled the carb off and ripped it apart to see if any debris was present from my fuel plumbing job. Carb was clean. Had to be rear float level. Put her back on the car and it leaked like a siv. Replaced the float bowl gasket and it leaked. Had to replaced the bolt nylons to get it to quit. This is when I went to school on holley float adjusting. Finally got her dialed in tonight .
Time for the test drive. Take her out and hammer her pretty hard. This biatch flys! Running down the freeway doing 80 and it sputter and dies. Just what I need right now. It's out of gas. Best news I have had in 3 weeks. Old lady bring a gas can and she fires right up and I filled it up dialed in the idle and there she sits.
Springs are settling super fast. I need to crank up the coil overs again to get it to where the front doesn't rub and the back looks proportional.
Pictures and a killer video are coming very soon .

Been taking her on routine little runs. To the gym and for a haircut yesterday. Tonight I went to lowes and ran a big loop on the freeway. I have to say driving my 08 550i is a bore now. Walking out of lowes tonight made it all worth it. The flourescent light really made the wheels bling. Really appreciate it guys. I dumped it before the axle. It's just really tight especially with my stance. The magnaflow system is just not that loud. I also have plans for more sound deadening when I have the interior finished. It was fairly quick. Frank got the car last fall and I've had it for about 5-6 months. I really worked hard on it for a while. I'll have some killer pictures and video when it's officially done.

Got one word for this car. Insane. First time I have ever punched the throttle and got sideways going 55!!!!:D That 587 ftlbs at 3700 gets it done. The money spent on the headers and exhaust was worth every penny. I am confident I am getting every last ounce of horsepower out of this engine. Working out some bugs this week.
Clutch pedal wasn't returning to the pedal stop. I made a z bracket out of 3/8 steel and a stronger spring. I attached it to the blow proof bellhousing. With these 2 1/8 headers using a stock spring setup is not going to happen. Redo
Pinion angle/ rear tire rub. After a discussion a month of so ago I discovered that the pinion angle was supposed to be 1 degree negative of the drive line angle with a G Bar. A little more with high horsepower applications. I set mine at 2 degrees negative tonight after having it 2 degree negative of level. It did smooth out the acceleration somewhat. I knew I would gain some clearance from the front of the tire to the fender lip. It actually moved the tire back .5 inches and centered the tire in the wheel well. Two problems solved in one. It didn't get rid of the vibration that starts right at 72. It's got to be wheel balance because it has none until that point. (Buy the Prodigy Bar....the stock setup absolutely sucks for pinion angle adjustments) I hope the neighbors kids were in bed.
Hesitation hot off idle/ hard hot start I bought a Phenolic .5 carb spacer. This cuts way down on the heat transfer between the engine and carb. From some research new fuels boil easier than old. The cooler you can keep your carb the better. Tomorrow it's going on and then I will tweak the idle mixtures and accelerator pumps. This should help me eleminate the stumble off idle and hard hot start.
Re routed my vent for my fuel tank. More of a striaght up design. While under the car tonight I now have a leak at my pump inlet. Drip ever once an a while. I used high temp teflon and let it set up for 72hrs. These things are a bitch to seal.
I also adjusted all four coil overs for the third time. The front is higher than I would like but it seems to still be settling. I am going to drive it for a few weeks and then worry about getting it perfect.

For anyone that's been following Todds build, I'm hear to tell you it's a top notch!
Today Todd and I grabbed the girls and hit the Highway. First it was a run to breakfast out in Boulder City, followed by a cruise around the lake. Then it was over to Henderson for the big car show they had going on. It was great day with some killer cars....even four pro touring camaros (all members). Running down the Highway and around the Lake was a blast. Todds car has an amazing sound. It's as sweet as a P-51 Mustang! It was a real treat to see him in my rear view mirror and then watch him go booming by. He's made some awesome progress and the car shows his eye for detail.
Sadly the battery in the Camera died after the few pictures. Once it's charged I'll see if any turned out and are worthy of posting.
Thanks for the fun Todd....looking forward to next weekend.

Had quite a few requests for a exhaust video. 3 inch magnaflow with x pipe dumped at the axle. Mellow but sounds pretty good at redline. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eH1SW7J74dU
Spending most of my time ironing out the bugs. I have to say it's one of my favorite phases on the car. Basically fine tuning a driving car. Today I drove down to George's Alignment shop. Old school shop opened in the 50's. I have found a bunch of local connections building this car. Still align cars with a set of plates, pit, and bubble gauges. Perfect since ever alignment shop couldn't put heads on m 19 inch rims. Steering wheel is perfectly straight and the camber is dialed in at .5 degrees negative. 100 bones and I'm out. http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa251/Payback1969/Alignmentshop.jpg
I can't go anywhere without people flocking to this car. The alignment guy takes it out to check the steering wheel alignment and a photographer stops by and hands me his card. Good news is he has many strippers on hand for nude photos with the car. Old lady didn't seem to thrilled. What she doesn't know won't kill her right? I drove it down to Toyota to get a sun visor for my ladies truck. Harrassed on the way in and out. Kids go nuts over it and tonight a couple of hot young chicks were flirting with me like crazy. Didn't expect it to be so popular everywhere I go.

Well the car is out of commission for interior work. I talked to a couple shops and they wanted crazy money and the car for the rest of my life. So I decided to get as far as I can, of course being happy with the outcome and what I am not capable of or have time for someone can finish.
Well 600hp and 2 1/8 primaries makes some serious heat. The floors are coated inside and out, and I also have second skin dynapro or whatever they call it. The floor was still getting hot especially in the foot boards and tunnel. I decided to add a second layer of insulation. It's 3/8 inch thick with jute and foil on both sides. The whole floor and tunnel is done. I built up the rear floor pans to be even as they would be from the factory. Since I have the DSE connectors it puts a nice hump in the floor pan for the carpet. I then taped it all with aluminized heat tape.

I have spent alot of time looking at different stereo and speaker options. You really didn't think I was going to half ass the sound system did you.:D
I decided to go with an Alpine 2008 model with IPOD, HD radio, Blue tooth, etc. You can pick your songs right on the head unit. Pretty slick set up. It's wired up and ready to go.
I am also running the factory setup in the dash, except for I opted for the kenwood upgrade. The bracket that came with it was so flimsy I decided to make my own.
Now for the fun part. Everything else is top of the line JL Audio. I am going to have 2 4" speakers in the kicks with tweeters. 2 6x9's in the rear dash with tweeters. 10" sub in the trunk along with my 1320 watt amp. Should get the job done. Once I get the carpet back in and seats all the rest of the sounds system. I am going to take it somewhere to build the box. The amp will be mounted to it and maybe the trunk carpeted.

Not a chance of having it back together. I'm hoping by Sema :_paranoid Looking like a good chance of me working Saturday anyway.
AJ...it's a 6 channel amp. Right now I am planning to run the dash speakers off the deck....kicks off 2 channels, 6x9's off two channels, and bridge the last two for the sub. That gives me 70rms per small speaker and 150 rms for the sub. I may end up running the 4 fronts in parallel since they are rated at 35-40rms. Going to call JL on that. No custom kicks. Plenty of room for these speakers in the stock kicks. Which leads me to another story. Brand new kicks and the drivers side is to thick and the door won't shut. Thought it was the door panel. Nope...molded wrong. Passenger fits perfect. Ordered a second hoping it was molded better. I tweaked it and cut on it and it still wouldn't work. This is my first stereo install believe it or not. I'm a gear head but pretty excited about this whole deal.

you put the juke and carpet over it...and then it will be nice and cool. I drove mine like that for a while and was dissapointed with how much heat came through.
You stereo set up is almost identical to mine. I am running vinatge air, so I made pods in the cowl area. 5.25 Memphis seperates. Used stock non air kicks and trimed the back of them. Where the vent levers on the kicks were, I mounted the tweeters. Have 2 4 inch JL Audios in the dash, 2 6x9 in the rear deck and 10 sub firing through back seat.
Deck power runs the 4 inchers in the center dash and 6 Channel JL Audio does the rest...just like you plan.
My car is so loud driving that you really do not get the benefit of how good the system is....
I think you will find that you will need to turn up the gain on the front speakers in the kicks. The center speakers, even running on the deck power, will be very loud and over power the others.
Good luck and keep us posted.

I am going to have to go back and look at your build again for some ideas. I plan to fire the sub into the back seat as well. The shape of the trunk makes it interesting, that's for sure. Definitely need to leave that to a pro. audio stuff is actually what spring boarded me into being a car junkie.lol before i could even drive i was working on car stereos and sitting in cars bumping the stereo in the garage lol.
I have done sub installs in a few years but i will tell you that bass is not like treble and you dont hear bass but feeling and bass frequences are actually louder the farther they are away... basically what im saying is that you dont what the sub facing the back seat, you want it facing towards the back of thbe car and the bass frequencewill bounce off the truck wall and will create a much louder "sound" at lower volume levels which in return will give you a much better sound quality whick imo is the most important.
i dont know what the factory kick look like, are they built for speakers or are you just gonna cut holes for them?
if you can get some custom ones make for not to much i would really go that route cause it helps alot with sound stageing if the speakers point towards the listeners ears and not right into thier foot.lol
if you need any help just give me a call im no pro and a little rusty but for the most part know my audio ****.

but I was trying to keep my car quite as I could inside. I have dual 3 inch exhaust with an H pipe. The mufflers are 14 inches long and you can see straight through them. I knew I was not putting sound deadening in the trunk or carpet, so I put a thin piece of metal over the back and cut a hole for the sub to fire through. That way I could isolate the trunk from the cabin.
My sub box is very simple. basically a square with an angle to match the angle of the back seat. Mounted my amp to the box.

I need my car back on the road by next weekend for some cruises and Sema stuff. I now have the Heat/AC unit brackets and misc. to get it level and in the right position for ducts and hoses. With a shaved firewall and not wanting to breach it, things are more difficult.
I decided I wanted the combination of old school fresh air vents and modern AC and Heat. I have good memories of opening the vents in my 68 on a cool night. So it will have both. I installed the 4" JL's in the kicks and isulated the area behind the speakers.
Since the dash top was replaced by Prodigy Customs during the body restoration, the defrost vent mounts were missing. I fabbed up some brackets out of some roofing materials and they are exactly where they need to be.

Well I decided that I have done enough work on my car lately. It's not finished but getting pretty damn close. When you garage looks like this, it's time to throw the seats back in and enjoy the fruits of your labor. I like driving it more than working on it anyway. I am a crew of one and this is the time to drive my car. It's comfy now and I have tunes. In the next few weeks I'll have a box built, carpet the trunk, and put in the back seat. My main goal was get it decent for the Sema fun.

Carpet is in, radio is in, all speaker wiring is routed, shifter boot, kick panels, rear shelf, all speakers except sub. Sticking point if drivers door panel. The door won't shut with it installed in the right spot for the windlace. Car is identical on both sides. Probably going to need to shave the panel. So may end up recovering both panels and then the rear panels will match so they aren't done.
I decided to clean up the garage and in the middle put the front spoiler on with one bolt. What do you think? With or without the spoiler?

Well the transmission is coming back out of my car. I have been fighting a vibration at highway speed in approx 85-95mph range. There has always been a vibration in the 2600-2800 rpm range in the motor. Wouldn't call it a bad vibration. In fact I rode passenger a few days ago and really didn't notice it around town. Just thought it was solid mounts/body mounts. In 1-4th gear it's really not that big a deal. In 5th more harmonics are transferred and it stays in the pocket longer. Orginally I thought it was pinion angle. Until I pushed in the clutch in the pocket and it went away. I was also able to go through that mph range in 4th and beyond with normal vibration.
When I had the engine built it went beyond schedule and they were impossible to reach for a couple months. They were supposed to send the flywheel I paid for. It didn't show and I couldn't wait. After a ton of research and talking with the engine builder. I have a gen vi block with a gen iV crankshaft. I assumed since they used a gen vi block that was the proper flywheel. Turns out you can use a gen iv crank with a adapter for the rear main seal. Keep in mind this is an external balance engine. After some research it appears the weight is in a slightly different place and the imbalance is 33 OZ in the gen iv and 41.7 in the gen v/vi. 8 oz is quite a bit a weight on the end of a crankshaft. I am surprised it only showed up between 2600-2800. I hope I haven't done any damage to my engine. Would have been nice for them to put something in my paperwork indicating this little fact!!! Oh well....time will tell.
See the difference?

any reason with all your engine work done, your builder did not internally balance the motor? on the 496 i built for vinny, it balanced very easy with taking weight out.
hope everything's ok
ProdigyCustoms
11-10-2008, 06:59 PM
That is exactly what I was trying to explian. They are a few grams different and different location. Hope this fixes you, it sounded like it was a few grams out. I doubt you hurt the motor though.
Car looked killer BTW, Appreciate you bring it out to the party. People we GaGa over it. But I missed that ride.

I don't know why they external balance the 489. In my research most of the cast cranks are external balance in 4.25 stroke. I assume it's much easier to just balance the bob weights and use external balanced flywheel/balancer. I am very impressed with the engine as far as performance goes. I caught them during some growing pains and now paying the price for it. The rear main seal also has a small drip. I might as well dig in while I'm there. Now that I know it's two peice I get to pull the oil pan as well. :censored:
Frank...you are correct that mcleod makes a separate flywheel for Gen VI 454 and 502. Mcleod said the counter balance weight is the same but the placement is slightly different. I never dreamed I had a gen iv crank in this motor. Thanks for the words about the car.
68protouring454
11-10-2008, 09:27 PM
i used scat 4130 crank and h beam end cap screw rods, 4.250 crank, 6.385 rod with wiseco forged piston.
the crank i got was external balance as well but there was a certain part number that was almost always too heavy and not light as its way cheaper to take weight out, then ass it.
hopefully you don't have any issues, the rear main will be fun enough. goodluck

Three hours later and it's all apart. Probably a half hour on a hoist.
Anyway here we go.
This is an interesting picture and what I believe to be the reason the improper flywheel didn't vibrate anywhere but that specific rpm range. The centerforce weights were definitely compensating.

After three days of crawling around on the garage floor, I got it back together. I went with the proper gen iv centerforce billet steel flywheel. Nice piece. Of course I then had to remove the shims from my starter nose due to about .060 difference in nose to ring gear clearance difference from gen iv to vi. I did buy a real metal clutch alignment tool for like 20 bucks. The tranny went in so easy. I had it up and in in less than 10 minutes. Best 20 bucks I ever spent.
http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa251/Payback1969/IMG_1232.jpg
Well, it's smoother everywhere. But......I still have a vibration. Now it's only at 2800 rpm. Man is she a sweetheart everywhere else. I tried to feel a weight on the balancer but couldn't get my fingers in there. Next I need to verify it's got the correct balancer.
It gave me a chance to clean the bottom while I was under there. Changed the oil and it looked great, changed the tranny fluid and it looked fine as well. Seems things are breaking in nicely. Here are some photos of the bottom. Don't think I have posted many.
The guys at ATS did a fantastic job on my exhaust. Fits so nice and snug. Never has it touched anything in the road.

Todd,
Good to hear the vibration is better but it sucks it's not gone. I am sure the guy's a CC5S likely went over this but I was just thinking that you changed the sub frame mid-build and went with the DSE unit. Did you order your TKO kit prior to that? CC5S has two cross members for first gen camaro. Standard SBC and a big block which is offset. The BBC cross member would only apply if you either had a factory big block car or you changed the SBC engine stands to the BBC ones. Perhaps all this gets thrown out the window with an after market sub? Just thought I would mention that as you have widdled down all the other things that relate to this kind of issue.
Vegas69

Part of building these things is tuning and lot's of it. Built from scratch means tweaking this and that to get things optimal. I've had a tip in hesitation since day one, my plugs are burning a little fat, and my radiator recovery system needed some work.
With a MSD Pro Billet distributor you have no vacuum advance. With a large camshaft that means low vacuum at idle. To help with vacuum and signal to the carb you want as much intial timing as possible. The problem is as you increase intial you increase total. Today I pulled my distributor apart to find a 21 degree bushing and the heaviest springs MSD makes. Not optimal by any means. I replaced the bushing with the black 18 degree and used the blue springs. Now advance will come in 500 rpm sooner and I can add 3 degrees initial timing.
My engine was dyno tuned in NC. I am at 2500 ft elevation and in a drier climate. I have used formulas in the past to change jets on my quad. Basically I needed to jet down .002 front and back to 79/87.
I was using a catch can which would probably work for some. With the half height body bushings it does make your engine set higher in relation to the radiator. Basically what would happen is I would top it off and drive it, as the coolant expanded it would go in the catch can . Well after a few drives the coolant would get low enough it would get an air pocket in the intake at the sensor. No problem if I topped it off ever couple times. Now I have a recovery style resorvoir. It will pull the expanded coolant back as it cools like a new car.
So I rejetted and reset the float levels, adjusted the air mixture screws and added a few degrees of initial timing. Car has never run better or smoother. In fact it's helped my vibration at freeway speeds 85-95. The poly engine mounts go in next and that will eliminate almost all of that. Tip in heistation has vastly improved. Probably going to have to send in the metering blocks to get rid of it 100%. For now it's 100% better than before all the tweaking. All and all one of the best days of work yet. Just keeps getting better!

Put her up on jack stands last night since the weather has sucked the last few days for a shake down. 1500 miles and I just wanted to look everything over underneath since it's all brand new. I decided to change the rear end grease as a precautionary measure. I had some gear oil coming out the vent and found that it was slightly overfull. I didn't have a 5/8 allen when I filled it originally and eyeballed it from the cover plug. Fluid looked good with no red flags. I have already swapped the tranny fluid and engine oil and both looked fine. I found the rear e brake cables a tad tight since the ride height is lower than when I set it up. It would have been really tight under full throttle.:_paranoid I adjusted them and they have plenty of give now. I also put in the factory clutch pedal bumper to lower the clutch pedal positioin and adjusted the pedal travel. I had used a rubber grommet since I didn't have the part. Feels really good and more comfortable with the lower pedal height. I did a bolt check on the undercarriage and looked for leaks. The only leak is the rear main seal drip. Not happy about that but I am happy with the power and everything else. I didn't assemble it and it's more of an annoyance than anything. It's not all over anything underneath so I should be ok unless it gets worse. I also tweaked a plug wire that I had replaced since the build that got burn't since I ran them under the headers. (What a pain in the aise) All and all very pleased. I'll take apart my 8 micron fuel filter one of these days to check for debris. I also need to work on my fuel venting. At a full tank it does overflow out the vent for a short time which I know others are fighting with Ricks tanks. I need to figure out a discriminating valve set up or something. I don't want to breach the trunk since it's so damn pretty now:D Next are the photos I've been promising. I have a killer camera and the rest of the week is 60's and sunny. Should have some good stuff coming very soon. Shes a beast and a blast to drive.

Woke up to a beautiful day with 70's and no wind. Scott was kind enough to feature my car this month. Went and had lunch at the hot rod grill, drove out to Calville bay, around the lake, up through Boulder City. Just had a fantastic cruise. Started to pick up a misfire around the lake. Well about a mile outside of boulder she died on me. Checked everything to no avail. Figured out I had no spark. I noticed when it died the tach was all over the map. An hour later the flat bed showed up and I get her home. Checked spark at the coil and no dice. Had a feeling the distributor gear was sheared. Pulled the cap and the rotor wasn't moving. Here is what I found. What do you want to bet it should have a melonized gear. Love to ring that engine builders neck:D

I've decided to go with the GM melonized gear. That is what GM recommends for there cast rollers. Mine has a cast gear so it should give me the longevity I want.

AWESOME CAR AND AWESOME JOB TODD!!
It's nice to see that your dream car is finally a reality. As a builder and lifelong Camaro guy, I know these builds take time. Of the many Camaro's I've owned over the years, each one always gives me new ideas. What you've incorporated here is just incredible. It can sometimes be difficult for an idea to come to life as it can somewhat get lost in translation and other people sometimes have ideas that can cloud the owners (your) true vision. Your attention to detail is top notch and you stayed the course with the car you've had in your head all these years. As with all builds, there were hiccups along the way and you've found that parts are not always what they should be. As a builder, those little gremlins drive me nuts.
It's good to see someone who doesn't build these cars for a living go through the process. I've had several customers help-out with their own projects over the years and they all tell me afterwards that they never had any idea that these cars required so much work. Some of the shows on the tube give people the impression that these cars can be done in a week. So many things can happen along the way that are out of your control and all you can do is try to rectify the situation. As a builder, that can be tough to explain to a customer since they only see it as a delay. You worked through your issues and ended up with an INCREDIBLE CAMARO. Congrats on the "Car of the month" award, you deserve it.
When I finally get my butt out to LasVegas, I would like to come bye and see that "Beast" you built.
P.S. My wife saw the pictures and loves the Camaro. Her exact words were "WOW, that's beautiful"

Nick, your tact never ceases to amaze me. I really appreciate the comments. You are absolutely right about the difficulty of making these cars happen. Especially when you cross over into the custom territory. It's also one thing to have a vision and another for it to look good and function as intended. I spent countless hours hiding everything I could, covering bare wires and routing them together. Thanks for finding this outstanding car for me. That was a huge peice of the puzzle. That car you built for the California kid is what got my wheels spinning again. I'd be happy to take you for a spin when you make it out.

Appreciate it:cheers: I am posting this more in an attempt to help someone else not get stranded on the side of the road. As I posted on the last page I sheared my distributor gear last weekend at about the 1600 mile mark. The engine was built and dyno tuned by a Nascar engine builder. The performance has always been excellent. I did start to notice a little drop off in power the last few times I drove it before the failure(including the video footage) I had needed to turn up the idle due to low idle not long ago as well. It all ads up now. I hadn't timed the car in quite some time. With the distributor gear wear I bet I lost 5-10 degrees of timing. Anyway....after doing my research and reviewing my engine file I determined that my billet hydraulic roller cam had a pressed on cast iron distributor gear. That is a great thing, but the engine builder used a bronze gear.
http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa251/Payback1969/121-8471.jpg
It's basically an aluminized brass gear made for billet steel cams without a pressed on cast gear. It's also used frequently by the drag guys. It's absolutely not meant for the street especially on a cast gear.
http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa251/Payback1969/121-8561_2.jpg
This is the correct gear for my application. It's a GM melonized cast iron distributor gear. It should give me the reliability we all need for the street. It comes on most GM hei's and so forth.
http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa251/Payback1969/020.jpg
I cut open my last two oil filters and strangly enough the last one had very little debris where the one before had a decent amount of brass. It looks like the oil filter did a great job of catching the wear. I had changed it 4 times in the 1600 miles.

I was a little pissed that the builder put in the wrong gear. Of course there is a possibility of some bearing damage. After many calls and an email he finally called me. He swore my engine had a steel gear and needed the bronze gear. Until I told him which camshaft it had. He admitted they let it get past them and it was there fault. He also said he thought I would be fine but he would stand behind the motor if I have a failure. I changed the oil again and dumped a couple quarts to flush out any debris.
While I was messing around changing the distributor gear and retiming the engine, I decided to fix a seap around the crancase ventilation fitting that started in the last 200 miles.
http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa251/Payback1969/001-2.jpg
Gotta love a big block with the valve covers off with a set of dart pro 1 heads and comp rollers.
http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa251/Payback1969/IMG_0524.jpg
Hear is the fitting that dribbled. I used a dab of blue loctite on the threads.(Suck it the inside fell onto the rockers at 6k) and used some silcone on the washer. Should do it.
Timed her at 36 total and 18 degree intial and went for a 80 mile road test.:D :D Never run better! Car is ****** sick.

Absolutely...I've never heard anyone complain about the performance of his engines. When it comes to getting an engine when promised or getting a call back, that is a different story. I'll change the oil in another 500 miles. That will tell the story. I was joking around saying I'd just turn it into a 540 if it needs to come apart. I can use my crank and rods.:D Just would need a block and some pistons. Injected all aluminum big block...my wallet is chapped just thinking about it. :_paranoid

I'm not sure how you can comment on that since you were not involved in our discussions and agreements Jeff. I did see your car under construction and never had any problems with the quality. I also sat down with him and his family and had dinner. I'm a pretty good judge of charachter and felt very good about them. We have exchanged emails and both agree it was a lack of experience on both of our parts. The delays on your car and him moving into a shop with more overhead changed things. As far as any negativity, I have never publicly mentioned a shops name. I have thanked him for finding the car I ended up using for my build. There are no hard feelings between us. We are square in every way. Thank you for the comments about my car.

Well since my name is now being thrown in here, I figured I'd set the record straight. Todd is right. As with any business, you don't get every job and circumstances somtimes arrise that can change things. I had a big move that changed everything for me in a good way, but ended up costing me a customer in the process. That hurt on a personal level. There are shops out there that treat all their customers like a customer with a "screw you" attitude. I'm not one of those shops. I like to think of my customers as part of the family and try to develop a personal relationship with each one that carries on long after the project is finished. I like Todd and I am very happy he has the car he always dreamed of building. I have spoken with Todd many times since we've met and he and I are totally cool with everything. I'm a car guy like all of us and it would have killed me if Todd lost interest in his build over changes on my end. Prodigy does totally awesome work as we've all seen. Todd and I have learned a lot since we've met and as I've said previously, his car is FRIGGEN AWESOME!!!.
I'm glad I was able to find him such a solid base to build on and will take him up on his offer for a ride when I get my butt out to Vegas.
