Have you tried bumping up the discharge nozzle size yet?
Mine came with Pink as well. It's for drag racing and absoutely horrible for throttle response. I'd jump up to orange as it delivers better volume on tip in..... I'm pretty positive that's the cam I used.
Money! Thank you.
Still not ideally crisp but in the range now. The pump arm was at about .002 freeplay, I'll experiment lengthening/shortening the link +/- one flat of the nut and see if that helps.

No, but were getting there! 31's in it now, 33's and 35's are probably worth testing.
It felt pretty strong with smooth primary to secondary transition in 3rd & 4th gear hard roll on's this afternoon.

Sieg, here's great spec chart for Holley accelerator pump cams. The amounts are per 10 strokes of the pump arm and it is based on a 50cc pump, but is a good visual to see the differences when adjusting the cam position.

Big flat spot (as I'd call it) no blubbering, then it's fine. If I rev it and don't let it come all the way down to the 1K idle, say 1500 rpm, and crack the throttle it's fine. This has all been while actuating the throttle by hand.
:sieg:
After reading this.... I was thinking maybe you should try advancing the cam a few degrees and see if the response off the bottom gets better. Maybe it's just a matter of changing the valve timing events slightly.
Just throwing out another thing to try.... not sure if you considered this or not.

Thanks Scott, I haven't seen the volumes charted before, nor the WOT pump arm dimension measured.

Dale - The orange pump cam removed the off idle flat spot. What threw me was I thought I had eliminated the flat spot and bumped the initial timing which resulted in a big flat spot no matter what the initial timing was set at. I still don't understand what factors caused that to happen. Without an AFR monitor I'll assume it was lean to real lean in the transition and the motor could have loaded up a bit and when the timing was set it cleaned up at emphasized the lean condition.....:headscratch:
Based on the morning test drive it appears I'm finally heading in the right direction now.

Orange on the primary, I'll start experimenting with the secondary circuit when the primary is dialed. Secondaries come in pretty smooth right now but there's room for improvement.
Nozzles are 31's on Primary & Secondary.

Haven't heard any Sieg updates in a while :topic:
Working on "perfecting" the "responsible driving" off-idle transition right at full clutch engagement. The idle by-pass valve has an impact on the signal strength in that phase of transition.....IMO This carb appears to be pretty sensitive to small inputs and the weather changes and fragmented time schedule haven't helped the cause. Good weather = time obligations......free time = bad weather. :bang:

Once I have this transition sorted, which I believe is a better feel for the overlap and mixture impact of the circuits in the 1000-1500 rpm range, I'm home free. As is it's very drivable in 1500-6K range and under hard braking. I agree that they can be irritating due to their complexity and sensitivity........good and bad, love and hate.......they are very good brain-teasers, and patience testers.......and similar to computers if all else fails they can be fixed with a hammer. :D
Picked up a new camera today that's slightly more complex than a carb........I'm in big trouble!

Those pictures are quite the testimonial for a "real camera". It even made the stop ahead sign look crisp and interesting in the other thread.
Question for you, when you were welding on your subframe did you make a note of your settings on the Mig200?
I am getting along alright but thought I would ask just for comparison. I know there can be lots of variables in local voltage etc... just curious what might have worked for you.

The camera works!
I've only dabbled on the subframe and my first attempts were not hot enough. The material is 11 ga./ 1/8" / 3.2mm roughly. .035 wire in the 140-150 amp range w/ 75/25 gas should get'R done.

Thanks, it's the equipment. I've obtained the basic knowledge from years of interest in photography, though I was equipment handicapped. I'm actually pretty excited to have this camera.
I just sent this photo to GoPro with my warranty return info for the Hero3 with faulty audio.....I noted that hopefully engineering figures out the audio issues because the other four cameras in the picture are worse than the Hero3 which is the one you admit has an issue. How many victims are there?

The camera is actually better than expected and I have tweaked it with the custom functions. I was expecting it would need micro-focus adjustment but it appears to be close. Hopefully my other Canon lens is this close. The meter may have a tendency to slightly over-expose but that can be internally tuned along with a million other parameters. The electronic processing complexity and capability is amazing.
The carb is very close to driver status, just micro tuning the accel pump and possible the idle bypass air circuit. I managed to squeeze 11.5-12" of vacuum at idle out of it. It just has a tiny flat spot right off the 1K idle, just when you first touch the pedal.

Make sure your idle transfer slot exposure is in the ballpark. You should see about .020 of the slot on the underside of the butterflies.

Just run a nice stack of dimes around the butt. Watch the heat - it's a small part and ya gotta move along smartly.
Set up for the wall thickness of the TUBE.... start your weld on the insert and then it will grab the tube in the puddle.

Agree, turned aluminum or black. Current is a chrome cheapy to keep the fire restoration cost down.........with as many times as I've had it off making carb adjustments the finger printing chrome is a PITA. Here's where I anticipate the exhaust to exit. I'm not sure how far the tips will project and what angle I'll cut them at. They'll probably project just past the lower lip of the quarter panel. I'm certainly open to the pro's and con's of this location.

You reminded me that I need to make a base or reinforce my cheapo Harbor Freight cut-off saw. The stock base is a flexi POS.
I'm all ready to cut, fit, and fry!
Any TIG tips for aluminized steel tubing? Can you use stainless rod or MIG with stainless wire or does that create failure issues? Considering the welded section will not be stressed by a hanger, would butting the tubing and fuse welding with the TIG be the ticket?

If it's aluminized steel -- just fry it with the MIG.... Just make sure your fit up is impeccable.
You don't want to be hovering over those fumes.

My biggest dilemma is the range of travel in the rearward portion of the leaf spring. The tire has about a .5" and I can get 1.25" vertical clearance on the spring. I'm guessing the vertical clearance will result in the tailpipe contacting the spring under hard cornering.
Global West's Del-A-Lum rear shackle kit is probably in order to limit lateral travel and insure the tire stays clear of the tailpipe.

Today I earned a lot of respect for the numerous exhausts I've seen built on this site. It takes a lot of time and patience to layout, cut, and fit mandrel bent exhaust sections.....especially when it's your first time and the car is on jack stands vs. a lift. If I had a track log of my movements in the garage today it would resemble a Crayon drawing from a 3 year old whacked out on Mountain Dew.

Every time I do something on a car --- I gain new respect for those that can "really do it" --- and respect for the OEM engineers! Open the hood of a new car -- check out the packaging and then think to yourself -- someone has to build this as it's moving down an assembly line - in like - 15 minutes!
It looks good -- and it looks to me like you're having some fun too!
Loved the 3 year old on Dew analogy!
I will add this while I'm at it (since Stella is on Seattle time - but we're in SV so I'm up a little early). Once you've done this kind of work -- once ANYONE has done this kind of work themselves.... they'll never again question the billable hours from a good professional shop. They'll finally understand what it takes to do. The investment in equipment - overhead - skill - and if you want it to look professionally done - TIME.

The shop that originally installed the exhaust on the car in '91 is still in business and still does exceptional work but.........I had them bid it, but can't afford them right now. Their price looked fairer every time I crawled under the car and laid there scratching my head........after 30 or so trips their price looked pretty cheap......not to mention I tweaked a knee in the process.
Regarding tools my little Jet bandsaw paid for itself yesterday and a Burr-King would be a nice addition to the shop for final fitment.............almost as nice as a hoist. :D

Looking good Sieg
When you do it yourself you can get everything just right. I did the mufflers and tailpipes on my car a few weeks ago.... one thing I learned was that when the exhaust heats up, the tailpipes move around a bit. I ran my tailpipes between the leaf springs and rear fender like yours, and had to relocate the tail pipe mounts several times before I found the best position to keep the tailpipes from rubbing on the fender when the exhaust heated up.
Don’t make the same mistake I did by welding the mounts up solid right away... tack the mounts on and then do a test drive to make sure nothing rubs when its up to temp before finishing.
Just trying to save you from doing extra work!
Thanks Dale - I had planned on just clamping the tailpipes to the transverse muffler before final tacking. As is the guys that put the exhaust back together after the fire restoration weren't very meticulous and the muffler is pushed back and out 15mm off from perpendicular so I'm also factoring squaring the muffler in the future when I replace the rest of the tubing they butchered.
Did you use stainless or mild steel for your exhaust?
Test welds for the exhaust. Fuse welded 16 ga. at 45 amps. They look decent to me, critique please.

I went with stainless headers, stainless mufflers, and 3" diameter aluminized steel tubing for the rest. I also put in a couple of the Dynatech V-Band clamps between the X-pipe and the mufflers so I can unbolt and remove the exhaust when working under the car.
You need to get your car back together for a Lat-g beaches get together out at PIR... coming up soon.

nice work man, what filler are you using?
Thanks Vince - I just fit the seams net, fuse tacked, clamped, tacked and then fuse welded in .75 - 1" segments alternating 180* around the tube. 1/16" tungsten, 45 amps with gas lens. The aluminized finish didn't have the contamination issues I was fearing, I've had clean steel act worse. The welds appear to be dished only a few thousandths, hopefully they won't fracture.

To me it's like golf. An average golfer hits into the rough - he can't recover... the pro hits into the rough behind a tree and puts it on the green. What feedback can you give me on the Global West Del-A-Lum rear shackle kit? Does it limit lateral movement as advertised?
Been a long time since I've been down that road and I am currently using poly bushings but theoretical thinking tells me that a stiiffer bushing is going to increase spring rate in a roll condition due to the leafs twisting and binding. If your car is currently pushing up front I would say go for it.

In their marketing statements they claim: "Del-A-Lum bushings also provide lateral control of the leaf springs." My tire clearances are tight enough that limiting lateral play wouldn't hurt the situation. Regarding front end push - it's not been an issue, the rear springs are a pretty stiff rate.

I've got about .75" from the inners and .5" or less on the outer lips. Doubt I'll track it down there, just getting there is the goal. That all could change pending the ortho's diagnosis of the knee in the next couple of days.

One thing I like about Lat-g is not posting in my project thread for 18 days and I've been bumped to position 114!
Regarding the carb......I pulled it off to reverify butterfly positions and change back to the 6.5 (as delivered) power valves. Transfer slot exposure was .025 as I was told by the Holley Tech.......:headscratch: I thought screw that since I've been getting a crappy idle signal (rich at idle, lean at take off) and closed the primary and secondary butterflies then opened them a 1/4 turn, checked the pump linkage tension, went back to the 70 idle air jets as delivered, and set the fuel screws at 1 turn out.
Fired it up and tried to adjust to a stable 1K rpm idle with the idle air bypass circuit but it wanted to hunt a little. Gave it about 1/8 turn on P/S butterflies and readjusted the IA bypass and it was close. Put a vac gauge to it and set the fuel screws which end up around 1.25 turns. Bingo! It was close. Test drive indicated when slowing to a stop it wanted to stall, added an 1/8 turn on the full screws, better, another 1/8 and it's pretty close.
If that tech happens to read this............:smiley_smack:

Yes, I started with the 70's, went to 68's (richer) in the goosechase, then back to the 70's for the sequel.......I also bought some 73's just in case. It's in the ballpark based on drivability but I need to get an AF gauge installed for verification. Then mount the GoPro to capture the AF gauge and tach for a little redneck telemetry. :D
Ran it up to 6.5K for the first time since the freshen up and slammed 2nd today leaving the weigh scales and had no transition complaints.
Still maybe a touch lean as it needs to get to full op temp for a good idle, 6th gear throttle response at 2K rpm with my 3:31 gears is nice and smooth. ALso has a slight surge under trailing throttle when cornering, I believe that indicates a slight lean condition which fuel screw adjustments should eliminate.
The tuning weather here has been 48*-62* then 59*-84* windy cloudy rain and varying humidity........in one week. :D

Does anyone have any insight or first hand experience with the Flowmaster D-port style crossover....... sound and performance compared to X or H pipes?

The brake pedal to throttle pedal relation has been bothering me since I installed the manual trans. The distance between the two made it near impossible to heel & toe (with actual heel & toe) it required unnatural contortions and my knee would contact the shifter. I prefer heal & toeing with the left and right sides of the ball of my foot and the was impossible with the stock configuration and negotiating stops in traffic on an uphill were too exciting.
Yesterday I decided to figure out a resolution and completed it today. The test drive passed with flying colors.

The pedal is .75" closer to the drive than stock, the extension tab is 1" wide. The 3M self-adhesive non-slip surface on the pedal face is rubberize (not mineral coated) and gives just enough grip to keep the right side of my foot properly positioned on the pedal.

The pedal surface is .125" 6061 AL. The mount is 1 x 1.5 x .140" tubing. Mounting screws are 8 x 32 x 3/8". Pedal plate dimensions are 5.75" tall, 3" wide at bottom, 2" at top, extension is 2 7/8" tall. The angle is 10*. I used a linchpin for the pivot and safety wired it, there's a better solution but for $0.89 it works.

I've been thinking.......
What's reasonable price range in your opinion?
All aluminum has potential, but pivot wear would need to be addressed.

It's doable. Of course if we're talking main stream production you have packaging and distribution costs and maybe a few other fees here and there but I could definitley see the name "SIEG" on a performance product.

:headscratch: When are you going to be there?

I haven't seen big-bores since the '79 Trans Am race........won't forget the Carrier Corvette with the injected big-bore.......even if the RX7 bumblebee pulled it down the front straight. :confused59:
Just found out ALbany Jet Sprints are running tomorrow.......very tempting.

Ill be there most of the day tomorrow.
It's the year of the corvette. Al Unser Jr is the MC. He'll be out there driving a car maybe an old imsa car. Portland was his first win years ago.

Yeah I noticed that issue back when I had a running car... the solution for me was and is a clutchless trans.
I double clutch my Jerico almost every spin......
I see what you did there

For some silly reason I'm just a itsey-bitsey bit envious of your unemployment bennies.
I double clutch my Jerico almost every spin......Please define "every spin" :D
This is somewhat of a recent day summary of 24 years of ownership and the last 2+ years of available money and time, a near total loss, and why it's worth the effort.....IMO
Work, kids, and off-road motorcycles (while I could still do it) consumed the majority of my time and energy from 2000-2011, as time and priorities continued to evolve my "toy/hobby" focus shifted back to the one that continued to appreciate and could actually be labeled an asset.
In 2011 I sold a couple bikes and decided to invest the money in the hobby that appreciates and allowed me to be at home closer to my kids, wife...........and dogs of course. :D
Some of the money went to equipment (welding) and the rest to parts.........next to none to labor.
Most of the details worth noting are in this thread though they're entangled amongst the priceless gearhead jousting.
The rejuvenation plan of my long-term relationship involved: wheels/tires, to accommodate real brakes, and a 6 spd. trans to accommodate modern day cruising speeds. A little money and a LOT of time later left me with a car that was much improved and most importantly very enjoyable to drive for the first time in years............then came the fire that came within 60 seconds of turning the car into scrap metal value. I was one week from going to get it dyno'd to establish a baseline and reappraised to cover a stupidly low valuation..........let's leave it at I almost left about $24,000 on the table.
The resulting fire damage repair also instigated the upgrading to AFR heads, MSD ignition, higher rpm intake, and larger headers. Finally after months of tinkering on my "Pro-Tinkerer" I felt like it was close to the reliable car it had been in previous years. By that I mean the first time it left me stranded in 24 years was right after the trans install due to the starter electrical contacting the header and then the fire. It had never been tested and thus unknown.
So yesterday morning I take off solo to Portland (110 miles north on I-5) to watch a little of the Historic Races at Portland International Raceway. I took a few key tools survival tools and a cell phone. To many that's no big deal, but when the car hasn't made a 200+ mile round trip in a long time I didn't know what to expect.
As it turned out, and the reason for the post, all the money and energy over the past couple of years was well worth it. I forgot about how comfortable the Recaro seats were, how enjoyable it is to drive a car you're primarily responsible for it's existence, or how many people love seeing now "historic" vehicles on the road. I didn't forget how much of a luxury air condition is though!
The car made the 230 mile trip without even a need to raise the hood just for look. It cruised with the best of breed on the interstate and had people giving me thumbs up and speeding up to take pictures. I've lived in Eugene/Springfield since born and taken the trip to Portland too many times, without a doubt this was the most rewarding one.
Best of all...........after this mornings inspection there was not one drip of fluid under the car! :hapdance:
Follow your passion........done reasonably, it's well worth it.

I like that write up Seig :thankyou:Sieg, great words!!
I went through a huge change of life back in '06, losing my wife to pancreatic cancer. I was in a very bad place after that, went on a sabbatical from my job and went up to my aunt and uncles place on a lake in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and did nothing but zone out and fish. Fishing is Zen time for me, I do some of my best thinking spending a day on the lake.
I remember thinking how long it had been since I had a car to mess around with. 10 years or more, couldn't remember. I said YEA, I need another car......but this time it will be different. Full frame off restoration, by myself. I needed it, I needed to stay busy. Good for the mind.
I had been dream searching for a couple years, then I found it. THE car!!
Poured myself into that car, life kept moving the whole time, lots of changes, new job, new woman in my life (now my wife of 6 years), new house.
Finished the car.....some bumps in the road along the way (like a FIRE!!). But I got it finished, and whenever I get the Camaro out out the road, it takes me to another place.
Siege it's like you said:

I forgot about how comfortable the Recaro seats were, how enjoyable it is to drive a car you're primarily responsible for it's existence, or how many people love seeing now "historic" vehicles on the road.
When I stomp on the gas pedal, and hear the exhaust singing out, and the acceleration pushes me back in the seat, and I feel how well it all operates together and I smile to myself, and say "This is friggin fantastic, and I built this whole damn car in my garage", "I built a car!!!"
People come over to me at the gas station and ask questions and give compliments, thumbs up from others on the road.....even cops give me the "nod". It is all worth it, every stinking dime!!
Nobody can understand it, except another car guy, someone who is just as "into it" as you are. There is a feeling you get when you drive "the car", youth, exhilaration, adrenaline....it's all there.
Great post Sieg........it really took me back through a lot of life that happened in the last 7 years. :thankyou:

Dakota, from what his mom says he didn't stop talking about it.
Hopefully I converted a young kid from video games to wanting to play with cars
