Jason, was looking for you there and it was a blast! This intake is made more for drag racing I think. It sucks so much air, the RMP range starts at 4500 - maybe more! I told the guy I'd be his mule. He didn't bite...

Eric's correct. I am sticking to the plan! Cris decided to tear the front off to protect the paint with all the welding and cutting going on. We are also masking w 3m weld paper. There are parts of the paint that needs a little fixin' and we think there'll be cut/buff before it comes back home. Thx for the props Gae!

Brent- Their were a few things that Ron & I wanted to improve before final set-up.. We are changing the sub-frame bushings to get the car lower about 1/2.. Wanted to run the tranny angle @ 2.5 degrees.. easier to do with sub out.. Had a small issue with motor mounts.. Wanted to mock up headers.. All these things justified me pulling the sub out.. Plus we work alot faster.. Tranny tunnel is being modified for new angle on tranny..

Ron, what sizes did you spec for the master cylinders? I've got 7/8" front and rear; pedal travel is negligible. You sorta just stomp on it to stop. It is great for speed stop style runs and big tracks, because you can't just lock up the brakes accidentally. However, next time I want to see what a 3/4" front 7/8" rear feels like.

Same as you Matt, 7/8" fr and rr. I followed Cris' reccomendation on this - and I'm pretty sure this is the correct starting point - but this triple stuff is new to me...

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I think you should drive my car. Come to cars and coffee tomorrow morning. I'm serious.
Dual 7/8" master cylinders feel completely different than a tandem bore 7/8" master cylinder. It makes the latter setup feel like spongy power brakes. The Pozzis thought my brakes just flat out didn't work when they drove my car at Del Mar. Fran at RCR specs out 3/4" fr and 7/8" rr for his GT40s. Campell Auto Restoration prefers the same for most of their builds, which is what Kevin spent a while chatting with me about at last years Grand National Roadster Show.
If you think about it, the 3/4" will have a longer stroke with less resistance, whereas the 7/8" will will be firmer and move the same amount of fluid with less stroke. On these setups you'll be able to use the balance bar to adjust bias. I'm guessing you'll want to roll the bar fairly heavily towards the front... Damn this is to hard for me to explain right now. I need to just show you some time lol.
Matt
Ron in SoCal
12-10-2011, 08:16 AM
Matt you're probably right...but I have a few thoughts on this. First is master bore size is one of those dial in things. If the first one doesn't give me the pedal feel I'll up or downsize. Secondly, master sizing is a function of fluid requirements for pistion bore size (sq area). On the Baer's a 15/16 or 1" is reccomended. C6Z's reqiuire 7/8" according to Tobin; I'm not sure what the prefect size is for your Wilwoods. Smaller bore moves more fluid and has more pedal travel in theory. Either way, balance bar goes way up front as you said.
So the goal is not to have a spongy pedal. I'm also going to call Baer on Monday and seek Rick's input.
I'd love to hear other's thoughts on this as well :lateral:

He's really just making it more complicated than it really truly is...
Bigger bore - less pressure - more pedal and more effort is required for the same stopping power...
Smaller bore - more pressure per effort - more pedal modulation.
More SMALL pistons in these "multi piston brakes" do not always equal more MC because - like motors - 5 liters is still 5 liters - 12 cylinders or 6...
Pedal RATIO is important - for brake pedal TRAVEL -- and the multiplier of effort. 7:1 ratio will travel MORE and produce more pressure per effort than will a 6:1 pedal.
It ain't rocket science. The other #2 thing people forget about or make poor choices about is what pad they choose --- because a super hard race/autocross pad will feel crappy on the street regardless of all of the above. :willy: :D

Just ask Kenny. He has trying to make the better softer in the 57 for about 8 weeks. He gone up, down andeven changed the pedal ratio in both directions. He thinks he finally has it figured out. So no clue how it ended up but we think it done.

Thank you Greg! you are good for something on this forum
Another thing that needs to be taken into consideration is mounting of pedals & calipers.. The stronger the mount.. The less defelection you will get & the firmer your pedal will feel..
Ron will get me the bore diameter on the calipers & we will do a calculation of what will get us in the ball park.. It is always different from our calculation due to how you want pedal feel..

Do you have any pictures that show the distance between the side of the ls head and the frame rail? I'm curious about the how little room there is for exhaust clearance.

Lately we have been having a few LS7 with the dry sump systems on them.. One thing that was a pain on the oil pan plumbing was fittings that were big & the angles were taking it into the header.. I think this will help out with that.. Made our own oil pan block that sits it on top with a 30 degree angle.. Ordering fittings on Monday so the we can make a -12 fitting extender to take the hoses on a 90 degree..

Nice progress.
Here is what I have come up with messing with my twin master set up for years. I am at .70 for the front and 3/4 for the rear. Running the Wilwood stuff (6 piston front 4 piston rear)and the sizing for my caliper piston area is about the same as a C5/C6 vette. My pedal ratio is 6:1. Caliper pressure gauges show 1200 psi front and 900 psi rear with about 100 lbs of leg pressure. I started at 7/8 in the front and 1 inch in the rear and could barely get my car to stop.
As Greg stated, the larger the bore the more fluid volume. I would have a higher pedal ratio (7:1) if I could have made it fit and run a slightlly larger bore size. The problem that I have run into is the masters are so small to help the pedal effort and to be able to lock the wheels, I do not have much fluid volume and you can really tell the pad knock back. If I were running power brakes with a large volume master (1 3/16), it would hide the knockback that I am getting now.
The balance bar is for fine tuning and you will need to try and size the masters as to run the balance bar as close to the center as possible. Then use the adjustment to fine tune or change for conditions. IE autocross, more rear brake, speed stop less. Reason for the larger master in the rear is for fluid volume and for the same given pedal effort there will be less force applied to the rear. Also, the rear caliper piston area is normally smaller than the front and will require less pressure.
Getting the corrrect pads will make the most difference in your stopping power. I was running Wilwood BP 10's and could not lock them up when cold. Swithed to a high bite autocross pad and it was like night and day. While trying to find the right brake compound I tried a full race pad, way too much for a street tire. I went to bed them in on the interstate, running 85 mph I hammered the brakes to start the heat cycle...front tires locked up. I was suprised to say the least.
That is a pretty racing looking set-up you have going there. Good luck with getting it dialed in. I would not run the same size master front and rear.

Sorry guys, it was a very busy weekend and I coouldn't get back to this!
Greg/Marty thx for the input!
Bry - the trips are for a better control/finer adjustment and as Payton said, you can really get to it quick depending on use.
Cris - great work as usual. That oil pan fitting is a thing of beauty! Time to update the JCG Products thread?
Gae/Dave- Gunnin for Sept. RTTC is gonna be tough...:willy:
Payton/Matt - thx for your guidance. I think everyone gets a little smarter when guys who've done it jump in. I did speak to Baer and got some data over to Cris this AM. We'll do the calcs and try to get as close to a good starting point as we can. It looks like smaller/bigger (fr/rr) is the way to go. As far as pads go, all I have at the moment is stock from Baer. I have some ideas on that but need to get farther down the road to dig into it.

Meanwhile, back in Oxnard, CA…Cris is pounding away at the punchlist, and as he posted yesterday the headers are welded up. There’s still a little to finish, but I’m pretty happy with the way they came out. The issue has always been that besides AME there’s not much out there for a good fit for their sub and motor mount system. Sure, they make a nice piece but it only comes in 1 ¾” and I wanted 1 7/8” loooong tubes. Frank has been working on a Stainless works 2” set up, and that’d be great if I was building a drag car/motor. So months back I got a set of Kooks unwelded. The plan was always to chop and reweld to fit and that’s what Cris did.

As you can see, they protrude a little ( ~ ½”) beyond the side and bottom framerail, but I’m cool with that.

Thank you for the props Gaetano! But sometimes I do get into trouble..
So, the brakes on the blue 68 are not working the way they should.. Booster is bad.. pedal ratio is off.. the M/C bore size is needs to be smaller.. when we re-worked the firewall.. the booster was a direct bolt on to the firewall & we could not mount the M/C back on the firewall..
Solution: Machine a adapter plate to union both parts! I had to give up the nice pcs we did for the M/C with our reservoirs.. learned alot from this problem..

A little Superbowl Sunday update - I finally picked up some pics from the motor shop and thought I'd throw up some details of my build...
For the most part this motor is not built 7800 rpm top end, but more for fast revving in-n-out of corners torque. My goal was to build a bullet proof (no such thing!) LS7, or at least take out some of the known weaknesses. I started w a flea-bay motor some knucklehead built wrong. I bought it knowing I would tear it down and rebuild it as strong as possible for the planned abuse. Last thing I wanted was a rod grenading the side of the block or needle bearings falling through the rotating assy under power. I wanted it to breathe good, accelerate quick and rev to 7k on the straights. I didn’t sleeve it, although I did speak to RED Steve and one day I’ll beef up the block a little (meaning the motor will be torn down at some point, planned or not).
According to Ovrkill, here’s my ‘puny’ motor (haha, Brent!). All the work was done at QMP Racing in Chatsworth, CA. I’ve known Brad and Mikey for a loooong time and consider them friends. These guys really know their stuff and everything is done in house. On any given week you’ll see small blocks, big blocks, turbo/blower builds, a Lambo rebuild or one of those Sonny-whats-his-names 800 cu alum motors! That thing is huge BTW…
I started w a stock GM LS7 crate motor. Block was CNC blueprinted, diamond honed, decked, align honed, Cam tunnel bored. We balanced the factory forged crank and added Crower billet steel connecting rods, ROSS custom pistons and pins, and a set of Total Seal custom rings. ARP main bearing studs hold it all together. I’ve got a 13 lb Fidanza alum flywheel and a McLeod RST clamp I’ll throw on when the time comes.
Heads were fully prepped w CNC port to breathe 390 cfm @ .0600. Milled and given QMP's competition valve job. We kept the Titanium valves and added Manley Titanium spring cups , retainers, pushrods and polished valve springs. CHE bushed rockers help delete those pesky needle bearings. We also used some of those new Comp short throw lifters (tray type) to see if they truly help the motor build revs faster and control any valve float.
Tieing the two together is a Comp bump stick. 235/244, 630 lift w a 113+2 LSA. Brad cam doctored it as he always does and this is the formula for my intended use.
For oiling I’m using an LS9 pump, Avaid pan baffle, Peterson baffled tank and breather. These cars don’t quite pull Gs like race prepped Vetts so I think I should be good.
Up top I’ve got a Mamo ported factory intake, Fast rails and a BER ported TB. We threw a set of Fast flow matched injectors pumping 65 psi just in case I decide to add some cubes or something later on down the road.
Here's some some pics...

I think he said "borderline scary". Haha Power certainly doesn't hurt your chances. Road racing is where it really makes a difference. We've seen low powered cars be very successful in autocross and the speed stop.
When do you plan to dyno and what numbers do you expect?

I went thru many TB's on my previous LS Engines from aftermarket 90mm to 102mm and the best TB that gave me zero problems was the Stock Ported TB's, plus I never noticed any gains with the Larger TB's.....I Have the spiral ported by V-Max will see how that performs.....I was told it should help tuners dial in surging/bucking with large cam setups

Yeah that was the quote. And watching your last left and down the straight proved it.
Dyno's somewhat unknown. Shooting for 550 rwhp and a tall/flat torque curve. Getting rid of the Ti rods added a little weight, but the whole assy is weight matched and Crower rods are are called Maxi Lights. I did keep the lightweight valvetrain, so if a I get a lttle less top end but gobs of upper torque I should be good. Let me know what you think?

So true. AFAIK, the intake has a bigger effect than the TB. A big TB on a stock intake is like putting a paper towel roll up to your nose.
Let me know on the spiral Phillip!

Epic update Ron - that thing is going to be a little monster! Can't wait to hear it and to see what you think of the clutch/fw setup. How long before you think you get to run it?
Q: You mentioned FAST rails on the stock (ported) LS7 intake. I swear I've seen such a beast but when I called FAST last week they claimed there was no such part - only the ones for their LSX(R) intakes. FAST also makes them for Katech now but again, only for the LSX(R) intake. I'd love a set like that for the stock intake. Mast had their Black Label rails but stopped making them. Any hint on the part#? Otherwise might have to stick with my Aeromotive rails.

Great catch Gregg. I called COMP/FAST and think they steered me wrong. I was given a verbal that these would work: (jegs) 244-146027-KIT. When we went to install, first they needed injector extensions to sit a little taller (not a big deal), and then the brackets they included would not fit on the factory intake. We'll need to either fab a bracket to mount to the factory rails or go a different route. The rails mounted do not align perfectly and I'm not sure just bolting them down is gonna fix it. Calling COMP today so we'll see.

Yes - that's the only number I've managed to find and it's for their LSX/LSX-R intake(s). I'm not sure if you will get the injectors to seat. You might be able to machine some brackets to work. Aeromotive makes rails that will bolt-up for you - that's what I'm running now.
Keep us posted.

And you thought I missed that remark ;-)
I had made some modifications to the car after the dyno session the other week so Saturday was all about a follow-up roadtest and re-tune "on the street". We litterally drove, logged, pulled to the side, tuned, repeat. Just a lot of little tweaks here and there, mostly for the street, very little change to the WOT (which of coarse we would never do on the street :unibrow:) I learned a ton. The car just plain runs and drives better now, which got thee ultimate test on the way back home! It was also the ultimate test for the fuel issues now that we have the Vaporworx kit fitted and coated the stainless headers to bring the underhood temps down. ZERO issues. Now to swap out that clutch :faint:

And yes, that firewall is clean... Nice little touch around the mounting for the Wilwood stuff. All transition edges smoothed out. You sure this is still going to be a driver and not a show boat?
Lol loving it. Can't wait.

Almost Cris...if only it was black, a green silouette hockey stripe would work! Thx for all your help

It looks great Ron! With a radiator big enough to fill the opening you'll need to warn little children to stay away from the grill, they might get sucked in.
It looks excelent! Glad to see it getting closer.

Hey Chris...how's the motor project going? You oughta post some updates cause Dave's getting all the play here...:D
No change yet as cosmetics are taking a back seat on the priority list. I'm thinking 18/19 step lip to get the look I'm after. It won't be a huge depature from the current set up style or color wise. Forgelines or HREs are top of the list. I did toy w the the idea of HRE P40s in a dark tint but I'm not sure they're right for a muscle car.

You know what brand of wheel I say go with Ron. :unibrow: :unibrow: The P40's are an excellent wheel choice, but it's a monoblock wheel with no lip. Therefore, the step lips are not an option.

It's going slowly Ron. It took a back seat to pay for some rounds of IVF that my wife and I are going through in an attempt to finally get a baby on board. It's part of the reason I was selling so much a few months ago. However, I've gotten some things squared away and a little better financial footing to the point where I'm finally going to start buying new parts in about a week. It'll be nice to finally be putting things back together and on my way towards version 2.0. When the first round of parts come in, I'll start a new project build thread and describe what's planned. Got some small suspension, braking, and structure improvements to make first while the car's apart in order to better deal with the extra projected torque and speed. Nothing as fancy as yours, just some minor non-groundbreaking stuff. Then I'll concentrate on the engine and a manual transmission setup.
Your tastes in wheels are very similar to mine. I've been flip-flopping back and forth between the HRE and Forgeline sites myself a lot recently, and a few others also. I would have to agree with you, I'm not sure the P40's are right for a muscle car with those spokes flush to the outside of the rim like that. Seems more like a good rim for a German or modern car. At RTTC and Del Mar GG, the DSE team had a gorgeous HRE mesh rim with a wide tire mounted on it sitting in their product display area. Did you see it? It was painted in a gunmetal color(or maybe had a tinted clearcoat?) with a brushed rim I think. When I saw it I immediately thought of your ride. The color of your car is perfect for a wheel with really any shade of metal. Could be brushed, tinted, silver powdercoated, or even black, and it'll look great. I would do a different shade than the color of your car though, just to have a little contrast. A polished or brushed hoop would work great also, although I'd probably lean towards a polished hoop if you're running chrome bumpers and/or polished window trim. Anyway, it's all up to you my friend. It's one of those good problems to have.

So $$$'s good. IVF's good. Sounds like a perfect recipe for muscle car engine and suspension mods :D J/k Chris! G-d bless you guys and I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers for a postive outcome...
Oh, and black or contrast on the wheels for sure! I saw a Porsche on the HRE gallery that had a similar color to mine and brushed/titanium (?) tinted clear. Very close color combo but looked sick. Maybe I'm old school, but something just doesn't click for me in my head if the wheels and car color are too close. I will say there was a 68 on PT that painted his mags the same color as his car and it did look good. I'm thinking if I do make a change and go w HREs, I'll ask them to show me a very dark tinted clear over brushed and see how that looks. Not sure, but I think they have a charcoal clear?
