So....there are good days and bad in a build. The highlights are when your car gets out of paint jail, you see your completed motor build on a stand, your first start up and so on. The bad are vendor, technical and mechanical delays, financial and emotional ups and downs and more. Today was one of the good days.
I picked up Robo this morning and we drove down to BoS. When we got there the car was sitting pretty, ready for a test drive – no windows and all.
http://i885.photobucket.com/albums/ac52/flash911/Build%20Thread/d280f25f-a657-4831-9e6f-479055eb1323_zpsd48c98a1.jpg[/URL]
Besides some mechanical issues solved (some not) and there were a couple of additions like boom/dynamat (custom blend, lol), seats mounted and headlight rings installed. Rob also doesn’t fit. He’ll never admit it, but I think he’s ok with it
http://i885.photobucket.com/albums/ac52/flash911/Chevyguy1-3-14_zpsefd484ff.jpg (http://s885.photobucket.com/user/flash911/media/Chevyguy1-3-14_zpsefd484ff.jpg.html)
http://i885.photobucket.com/albums/ac52/flash911/Build%20Thread/IMG_0687_zps3ceb8bfd.jpg (http://s885.photobucket.com/user/flash911/media/Build%20Thread/IMG_0687_zps3ceb8bfd.jpg.html)
http://i885.photobucket.com/albums/ac52/flash911/Build%20Thread/IMG_0696_zps1e3aec96.jpg (http://s885.photobucket.com/user/flash911/media/Build%20Thread/IMG_0696_zps1e3aec96.jpg.html)
Then came the moment of truth – my first drive! First time using my GoPro too.
GThHqJETGZI
Looking at the vids it’s hard to pick up the true sound and in car action, but the car is a MONSTER. Sideways in first through third; just touch the throttle and it goes. Also found a waterpump/oil leak and made a mess.
http://i885.photobucket.com/albums/ac52/flash911/Build%20Thread/coolantleak1-3-14_zps09a00976.jpg (http://s885.photobucket.com/user/flash911/media/Build%20Thread/coolantleak1-3-14_zps09a00976.jpg.html)
Oh well, that’s what test drives are for, right?
Idles at 90db too
Initial driving impressions: brakes are fresh and weak, clutch has about two inches of throw, tires are new and slick, needs a tune badly and the rack is precise but with less driver feedback than I would like. Also a few gremlins lingering. You know what - who f’n cares? I DROVE my CAR :D
After a few turns of the wrench, Matt hopped in and we took another spin. Coolant leak gone, car seems to come off throttle to idle better.
xNsHivNYJ8A
After that, we did another checklist and hit the road. I couldn’t help but think, it’s been almost four years since I ordered my subframe. In that time there’s been a lot of vendors and shops that helped along the way which I’m very grateful for, but really it’s all the friends I’ve made. Today it was Rob, Matt, Gregg and the text/cell army. I know there’s a long list of issues ahead even before this thing hits the track, but I’m ok with it. Can’t wait in fact. I’m a happy guy.

That is firicken awesome Ron! Finally! Still no burnout video for which I'm a bit disappointed but I'll let it fly this time.
The best part wasn't really seeing the car driving down the road but rather your reaction to it. I could just tell by watching how pleased you were and you seemed as giddy as a school girl with the thumbs up and all. What you said at the end of the first video sums it up (and should be in your sig)...."I Fu@$'n love it!"
I can't wait to feel the same about my car.

Yeah I was a little kid yesterday (when you turn 50 you don't get too many of those days). Almost didn't go out for a second putt after the water pump but was glad I did. First one was almost sensory overload and I was hyper-careful, second one started to feel like old friends and I like "oh man, can't wait to pound on this bad boy!"

Thx Scotty. The motor (when not missing) is really fun. I spoke to Rick at Baer and he said to take it easy on the brakes and get that gook (zinc) off them before bedding. First I had heard, but he suggested 200 miles before serious bedding.
The rear is a 3.70 and the maggie is a close ratio. GF bought me the GoPro 3+ Silver. Matt was real impressed with the iPhone controls , but the playback is very cool.

Didn't know that about zinc........buy it to wear if off? :sieg: :D
3:70 & CR appears to be the ticket. 1st - 2nd looked and sounded nice.
Wasn't sure about the audio on the GoPro and I don't trust them! I had to install new firmware in my 3 and it helped the audio a lot. I'd check their website for firmware info. Also, anytime you can run without the waterproof case I would. Especially since they now have protected lenses on the camera. Use this mount: http://gopro.com/camera-mounts/the-frame

Ron, What are your 1st through 6th ratios and your rear tire diameter? I'll be running a GTO T56 in mine with the 2.97 first gear and was thinking about rear end gearing myself. I traded the old 1970's truck SBC that came in mine for a 12 bolt posi that I haven't bothered checking the gears in yet. Anyway, I was thinking 3.73 or so would be about right for me.

Congrats on test driving the car, Ron. It's always a great day when that happens. Any time I fire up a car after a swap or major overhaul, I get all giddy and nervous like the first time I did it back as a teenager. Fun times. Good luck with the rest of it.
Thx Trey!

No need Frankie. Glad i got to see the killer work you're doing on your project and meet your beautiful family. Now go finish it please! :wow:
Sounds killer, gotta be kickazz to drive! Oh happy day.

WOW! Great day. Very happy for you, that thing sounds awesome. Got a ask what cam your running, most ls7s don't have that hot rod lope at idle. Mine is the katech torquer, ground on a 110 with a bunch of overlap, did you use something similar. Curious what the centers are on yours. Really awesome Ron! loved listening to it on that third vid.
:excited:
Great job- Rich
Thank you Rich. Your car, and many others were a great inspiration for me here. That's what makes this site killer. PM sent ::thumbsup: Sir.
OBK, go here and click on the technical specs tab:

Third one down is the close ratio gear set. 2.66 first makes for a nice launch vs the 2.97. I'm running a Nitto NT05 335/30x19 tire which is 27.1" tall IIRC. 3.73 should be perfect, although 6th becomes a tall highway gear (i.e. 80 mph at about 1800 - 2000 rpms).
Well Ronny, if I wasn't in on the minute by minute text chat updates I would have posted a congrats here a long time ago.
When Rob posted that leak I almost turned off my phone off. It looked bad from the photos and I didn't want to know. Thank God it was minor.
So heres to you Buddy  Congrats and thanks for sharing your world. Its a fun place to be.
Gaetano, thank you but it's not my world it's ours. The fun we have is all a part of the great group of people we've been fortunate enough to meet in this hobby. It's not just that we all share the same addiction, really some special people (like you and the others) I would be proud to call friends even if we didn't have cars in common. 2014's gonna be a great time
Oh that leak. Man I could've avoided it if I wasn't in such a rush to drive it. Thank god a shock didn''t fall off
It's such a wonderful feeling to have a car that actually runs.

Car sounds great. I got a 3+ Silver too and am working on editing a couple vids. It's going to be fun to figure out how to shoot some cool videos with the cars.

Thanks, I didn't know which one the "close ratio" was.
I'm pretty sure mine should be:
2.97:1-2.07:1-1.43:1-1.00:1-0.84:1-0.56:1
So, I've got trouble on both ends. :headspin: A useless 1st gear is probably better than an extra tall highway gear though so maybe I should go with a little higher numerical rear end gear.
Thanks!

I ran a couple calcs with some on line gear ratio calculators. Seems like a 4.11 will be good for take off and highway speeds. Check all the gears to be sure.
I doubt you'll get much use out of 1st gear. :animated_bye_bye_em

Ron, congrats my friend! Very happy for you. Watched the videos. Awesome. You're definitely on the home stretch. I'm running a 19" rear tire(275/35) with almost the same diameter, that same close ratio Magnum, but my rear is 3.42. At 80 in 6th I think I'm hitting about 2000rpms, maybe 2100. I love 6th actually. I thought it would be too low for highway cruising, but it's actually perfect. I'm loving the 3.42 rear. With the broad torque curve of the 489 and the width-challenged rear tires(275s), that ratio fits perfectly for me. Shift into 2nd at about 55mph and then 2nd gear is a quick blur, and 3rd is interesting also. Can't wait to go for a ride in that beast of yours though. Should be soon! Exciting.

Hey Brother! Yeah I bet your traction challenged with those skinnes :D
Interesting point you bring up on rear gearing. The more torque you have the easier it is to go down in rear gearing and let the motor pull. I seem to recall Godfather Stielow runs 3.42s or less. Also, my speedo isn't calibrated yet but with my 3.70s I don't think I'm pulling 55 in first which would be huge! I am surprised you are hitting 2k at 80 though; I would of thought a couple hundred less?
We'll be running together soon CRob

I'll double check the RPM at 80 next time I'm out. I'm pretty sure it's above 2000. The Nitto website says your NT05 tire diameter is 26.89" whereas my Dunlop ZII's are 26.6", so that's some of the difference right there.

Shocking, I know...but it's update time.
The last few weeks was mostly harness integration and remote tuning. Man, I am so grateful for Mike Norris and (Gandalf) Gregg Blundel for all their assistance. It kinda went like this:
Problem -> Mike -> Gregg -> new problem -> Mike -> Gregg ...until we ran out of problems. I thought you get a GM computer and custom harness, wire and fire. Uh no, not exactly. Props for the guys that do though!
The punchlist, save one/maybe two items, is done. BoS did a fantastic job putting up with my ideas, suggestions and phone calls. It's been a busy couple of months for me on and off the road and they were a great partner for this stage of the build. The car is as buttoned up as it's gonna be for now. Onto some pics:

This week it's off to Mark at Elegance Interiors and while there Mike will stop in and put a datalog/drive/fine tune on it. BTW, Mark has done a lot of work for hot rod guys in the area and developed a real nice touch for PT cars. He did my buddy Tom's 67 and it came out spectacular. So good in fact, that I might even go for some Street Car points, lol.

Hahaha, that's funny. You thought Ron only had two Home Depot buckets? I heard that he changes buckets as often as he does wheels.
I bought some buckets from him that were brand new and hadn't been "installed" in his car. Then I turned around and sold them too.

Yep, the car is off to interior. We have a somewhat sparse, but nice plan. Fits the car I think :sieg:
MIke Norris showed up at the shop and gave it a good four hours of tuning. He thinks it's 98% until it goes to the dyno for a little under the curve and top end refinement. I feel pretty comfortable it's where it needs to be for break in and early track days. I got a good laugh out out of a couple of his comments:
"She's a real head turner"
"Just a little light on power under 2500"
I know what he meant and totally trust and respect his opinion, but man the car feels lke '650hp/prepare for flight.'
More to come when I get back in town

Even when it's all done (IF EVER) the Prius will still probably win -- and I've seen 'em run BACKWARDS on the AutoX cross - faster than this one might be able do it going forward....
Let's hope it turns out to be more reliable than a couple built "professionally" that I can think of.

Update time, sort of - I found a little time to head down to the interior shop today. Part of the delay has been sourcing obscure little interior pieces I never knew existed or even needed. Some of which is only available via OEM in a couple reseller warehouses across the country. Pieces like roof/headliner tack stips, windlace mouldings, wire loom covers, door panel metal strips...stuff like that. Tracking it down and getting it shipped took more than two weeks. Also learned that I take to mechanicals, suspension and brakes much better than this crap. I'm learning more about interior than I ever wanted to. Go figure. :/endrant:
Elegance has progressed about as far as they could go without the parts.

The material is amazing. Looks like swede and is made of leather, but it's soft to the touch and very lightweight. I saw it on another car and decided it was a nice touch. There is bendable balsa under it and and thin layer of foam.
The rest of the car is high-end Mercedes carpet and leather to match texture of the seats. Maybe it'll get my car on TV, lol ...(JK - I could care less about that)

Went on a little roadtrip today to check out interior progress. Yeah the car has takien a while, but it's moving now. All panels are fabbed and currently being covered. Owner Mark says it'll be a day or so and then it's done.

Marcus it's really hard to do anything different on a Camaro interior these days without getting too far out there. It'll just be clean, nothing out of the ordinary.

That's funny about the shifter because the first thing I thought of is one of those vibrating "Magic Bullets". Hmm.... I thought you were in SoCal, not San Francisco. To each their own though, I say. What a man does in his own passenger compartment is no business of mine.

So after last week's visit, they told me a couple of more days so I made a final punchlist, checked with Dick @ BoS on final fab and availability and went down there today. There's still a couple of things left to do but we're down to hours at this point. Came out pretty much as expoected.
Here's one of those pics I was holding out on last week so you could see the in process and finished door panel:

And a couple of interior shots:

I scored an OEM dashpad and had it recovered in leather, double stitched. Came out nice, smells good too.

To each their own though, I say. What a man does in his own passenger compartment is no business of mine.
