Ha Ha, I just saw this post,, I was there Ron, I went over and visited with GW for a little bit, The race was pretty cool the first time for me, Just a little overwhelming.

I actually may have been Banned from a few places before!

It was good to meet you and finally put a face to the name. That's one of the best parts of the Lat G dinner at SEMA.

Sorry I was so busy at OUSCI... I don't get much of a chance to actually BS for long with many people. There's like 50 people hanging out at the rig -- and I'm really just there for Mark as his pit bit...

Ok you are joining the club with Mario and DG on threads from the past!!

So what's up with this bad boy update us please :poke:

Sorry I can't sleep!!:D

LatG midnight trolling, lol. We've all done it!

Since the last update I've only put a few miles on it. I cleaned it up from the Fontucky day and last Saturday took it out on a road we have here in SoCal, Mulholland Drive. What a rush! It's been 20 years since I last drove that stretch aggressively and honestly it was a bit nerve racking. Tight, blind curves, rocks in the road you name it. I got behind an SLS and we danced for about 15 minutes. The dude must live up there, cause he knew the road well. He got a little separation in the tight stuff and I was right with him in the 'esses' and 'u-eys' and sweepers where I could see ahead. Fun stuff for sure! Afterward my daughter got out of the car and said her legs were tired

Next up is some more suspension mods / tuning, a little electrical and getting ready for hopefully a fun 2015.

Sorry I missed you Trav. I'd bet we were standing next to each other and didn't even know it. I was the funny lookin' dude with the big :D all weekend when I wasn't, umm drinking. :getout:

You'd of thought that nice big poster of the DP rendering would have been a lot more cost effective. He could just hang it in his garage and when he has a "problem" he could just fold it up and bring it over to someones shop. They could hang it there for a while.

Nah --- He drove it one day for an hour or so..... back to a shop for another couple years of work now. LOL

Yes the car is in the garage, right where it belongs. :rules:

I've put about 1500 miles on it now, one track day and two AutoXs. Handles fantastic, lots o' power and real fun. I also got out to Chuckwalla for an instruction day. What a great freakin' track! 17 technical turns and it took me all morning just to learn the line.

Back to the car...I had blown a rear seal and cooked vent line so had to get that fixed. Mustang Ron lead me to a seal retainer plate and threw that on. Breathing looks good so hopefully that's cured. All the oil leaks are good save one (knock on wood), so I need to change out my oil thremo. Real weird, it's inconsistent - you can actually press on the lines or the housing and it'll start to leak. Anyway that's one extra I do not have on the shelf so I'm gonna switch out the existing Derale for a beefier Improved Racing unit.

Fingers crossed that does it.

Oh, did I mention she's real pretty? :D

I'm seriously glad to read this post!! Sorry I've been busy cruising the countryside in GWEN'S '33.... we're now in Austin Texas (after DRIVING it from San Francisco to here) for the Lonestar Round Up.....

Glad you are happy with the way it's all turning out. Cars can be such a hassle -- but are so worth it when they're dialed in and you're cruising up PCH or banging the lines at some track somewhere!!

Hey fellas! You wouldn't believe it, but last weekend I got a wild hair on Friday night and decided to drive down to Del Mar Good Guys. So I packed up the car and hit the road o'dark thirty, picked up Torino Rob on the way and we got to the fairgrounds at about 9:00. 240 miles round trip, car ran flawless.

Oh, and I got 3 whole AutoX runs!

My only regret - Not snapping a pic of Rob giving a return thumbs up to other cars on the road, any one of a dozen times. True story :D

GW I hope you had a great time on the road!

Had a little bit of fun at Camarillo on Sunday. Great venue, great people, typically 15 runs (plus fun runs sometimes), although we only got 12, and it's close enough to the ocean to take the heat off.

About 35 cars and some pretty good runners plus Matt and Gregg!

Hey Lance! You should know I read and enjoy every word in your updates

Kinks...the good news is most of the systems are functioning as they should. Most being the operative word: there were no leaks through the day and no wonky systems issues like clutch, drivetrain or powersteering and the trans shifts like butter. The motor is finally dyno tuned and has gobs of torque. I do have an intermittent lazy tach and no speedo function (looks pretty sitting on zero mph though, lol). I have some underdash wiring and need to reroute of my fuel vent line (for safety) that needs to be done and just general PITA / why didn't I do that earlier kinda stuff. But the car runs great! Seat time and general maintenance is what I care about most these days.

Hi Chief! Ancient history Sir...back in the old days they let you spray acrylic, non-water borne paint. The stuff sticks well and the satin sheen looks better than the current mix. When I figured that out I pulled a mulligan :)

Sounds like a great outing Ron! I tried to sign up after talking to Matt the weekend before but I was too slow and it sold out.

Chad it's such a fun set up, but you gotta sign up quick! Casey is freakin' PRO at laying out a fun yet challenging course. Next date is 7-11 and 12. I'm kinda thinking I'll do that instead of SCCA. And then Streets on the 18th!

LOL - Way back in the Day PHR did a pretty cool "Tips" article on shooting your car. I couldn't find it but I did find the one from Hot Rod

http://www.hotrod.com/features/0506phr-get-your-car-phr/

Thanks Marty

Glad you're getting wheel time and the car is performing well, Ron. I need to find an event that will let me make that many runs. Only getting 3 maybe 4 runs in here in ATL area just isn't going to cut it for me. I'd rather just cruise in the mountains.

I hear you Trey. Between so many classes and rules and minimal laps, it's tough to get up for SCCA.

Awesome stuff Ron, great to see it getting used.:woot:

Thanks Greg. Your turn :D

Watched the vid Ron. Appears your getting closer if not right on your shock settings. Good looking run.

Thanks Gae! To be honest, the shocks are close but there's a bit more to go. I've been working on the wingnut (driver) mod and only adjusting tire pressure the last few outings. I'm about ready to do a little shock and swaybar tuning now.

The vid doesn't really capture the brutality of the car, at least not to my eye. It's so easy to overpower (and push or get loose) the tires or the corner and screw up the line. It took me all day to get that one almost mistake free line. Even then, I could've cut it closer to the cones in some corners. Also the final dash to the finish I'm in second and probably doing 70, so I need to take it easy on the last jog and then nail it. Guys like Hobaugh or Maier make it look easy!

Panteracer

Pantera actually crosses well
But it took me a couple of years
to balance the car and that is on Dot
Road race tires

Don't like to cross it too much as
all the damn bondo etc in the engine
bay cracks along with a few other spots

200 tires I can get for it are to tall up
front and too short in the back
Messes the handling up

Every autocross run is like a qualifying lap on a track, just condensed... It takes WAY more effort on the driver's part to do it well than a lap around a track. Plus, in most cases you only get 3-4 tries at it to get it right...

Panteracer
07-02-2015, 08:20 PM
I think Lance hit the nail on the head
Autocrossing to me is the most challenging
Very rare to get a run right
I did quite a bit years back and
even won some divisional and regionals
in Scca. Points etc finally burned me out
Now I just want to run for fun but at the same
time want to get better. Car still needs tweaks then
maybe the driver can play catchup

Also would like to travel to SoCal and run different events

Ultimate autocross was actually running the Virgina City Hillclimb
5.1 miles up a road at sometimes 125 mph They say it takes
4 years to learn the course

Really liked that course layout.

For us auto-x fencesitters, it may be that for some of us, we were scarred by seeing multiple Top 5 SMOTY contenders plodding around on tiny figure 8 courses during our formative pro-touring years.

The typical plan Bob is four - 3 run sessions and then 3 timed runs, plus fun runs on occasion. Friday test and tun days are typically a "bring an extra set of tires" deal cause you get so many runs and then Sat / Sun is dependent on the number of drivers. Never less then three - 3 run sessions plus the timed runs.

Let's stay in touch and we'll plan a couple of good days out there when you come down.

I know a guy running the 315 Rival S behind 275 RE71s and he loves the balance and grip.

I'm running Michelin PSS. Good, not great AutoX tires. On the big track they don't go away quickly, so lots of guys like them for dual use.

The car sounds awesome in the video!

What did you end up doing on the fuel vent? I broke down and bought a II Much as I can't see any other good way to vent these cars. Looks like I'm going to do the same on the rear end. Packaging is tight so I'm trying to find a rollover check valve that will work with the vent mounted in the DSE crossmember. I found a jaz 6 an inline valve that I thought would work but it's upside down. I need opposite male female.

Car is a kick in the pants. Little more rear grip and little more brake and I think it'll do fine. Course, the wingnut still has a long was to go :)

Fuel vent has a temp fix via a rerouted line. I need to get it on the lift and bend up some tube which I hope will be permanent. If I didn't mention before, my II Much vent is mounted in near the tail panel which is not correct. Your way Ryan on the crossmember / highest point is best.

Finch dual vent system works great. Route one line to the tank and another to the diff. I put my box on the dse quadralink trunk brace

MX145
11-28-2015, 03:56 PM
Your video got my blood pumping. You have a lot more horsepower than I do. You must be smoother on the throttle :) and definitely a better driver. I'm also running Michelin PS's and am hoping to mount up something better suited for the track next year. I need all the help I can get to stay close to the cones and keep the car pointed the right direction!

I ran some temp vents for fuel and diff in order to pass tech so it's time to do something permanent. The II Much vent is nice quality I just need to find a roll-over check valve that will work. I'm trying to keep everything up high and avoid creating a "p" trap in the vent line. Maybe I'm overthinking it.

Randy, I didn't even know those were out there. Does the Finch vent to the outside like the II Much does?

randy
11-28-2015, 05:54 PM
Yes. It's a darn nice box.

Run a line to the tank to the diff to the box using -6 an fittings, a line from the diff to the box using the same -6 an fittings. If memory serves me correct I used the following..... 4 -6an female to hose fittings on each end of the hose, 2 hoses about 14" long, 1/4" npt male to -6 female for the tank and 1/8" npt male to -6 female. 2 fittings for the box that are 1/4" npt male to -6 male
