Those don't look nearly hellaflush for a man of your refined taste. They do, however, look like a recipe for understeer.
:underchair:
 I hear too little castor, excessive scrub and too narrow a rim for a tire can cause problems also.:underchair:
Is that a real project update? :waveflag:
Wait, what??

I'm thinking putting the big ones in front would be one way to differentiate oneself from the Rad Rides Torino.

This thread is lacking some Torino pictures isn't it.
I've been thinking about what this dam thing would look like on the ground for a couple years now. I have to thank Phil and Jeremy at RS for making the stance I had in my head come to life. For me it looks even better than I thought it would. Good enough for the hard core first gen guys to call a short truce and give it some love.

Maybe we oughta merge the whole site into one Torino blob thread? :ohsnap: :underchair:

Hey Ron, I know you'll see this. Pay attention, this is how you fit an 18x10 wheel on the front of a first gen. Rob, you also need to pay attention because Todd made the rock crawler sized tires look good, and work pretty well too (I feel pretty safe in saying it was a better autocross car then any Torino, ever).

That is why I haven't posted any updates to anything that I've been working on.
We really need Jody to create a section called the junkyard. We will move a few build threads over there. No reason to name names. You guys know who you are. Members will then have to pay a nominal fee to be set free to go digging for information, pictures, etc. Whatever they bring back, if they can find anything of value, will be charged accordingly. Half off on rainy days.

It makes a lot of sense Matt. Sometimes a builds technical details, pictures and lessons get buried in antics of peoples friends and errant members. It does make it harder to use those threads for informative purposes.

Oh, we seem to have had a failure to communicate. I was merely stating that I was trying not to bring my build thread back for fear of the inevitable cluttering of Hella flush pictures and other such related "technical discussions" that would surely ensue. Let's not forget the obligatory Torino pics that would have to go up as well. Then someone would bug me about only posting two pictures. Then Jer would put up a shot of Big Red, just because. Because it turns out millions around the world are huge fans of 'nothing'. ;)

So based on what currently is shown on TV, I would be optimistic that this thread, combined with the 3 Amigos threads (DP, BMF and GW's combo platter), could be the basis for a stellar all-access cable show... for starters. Then take aim at the proliferation of roddin' rednecks on the tube.

Well the block weighs 115lbs. I know I keep adding heavy parts like Kirkey road race seats and 21lb wheels and minimal interior and no AC and the smallest heater box made by vintage air but I'm sure you are pretty spot on at 6500lbs. My power to weight ratio is gonna SUCK for sure.:_paranoid

The story goes. ...... We were out in Riverside at the Moreno Valley mall when we came upon them. The Tang packets nearby first led us to believe they were from the late 50s.
When we discovered an empty Miracle Whip container full of head bolts and washers we knew we were dealing with pieces from 1964 or later.
It was the Pringles potatochip can that had been used to prop the intake up that nailed the date of manufacture as 1969.
Naturally we assumed they were spares from Richard Pettys winning effort at Riverside that year, cleaned them up and used them.:popcorn2:

Why not put the real cubic inches on the hood?
Just like the cars back in the day it is trying to pay homage to. The rules and the writing on the hood said one thing and what was running may have been something different.:lmao:
There never was a 496 CI grand national car. It's just a personal preference but I never have been a fan of updating the stock emblems with the new #s when using emblems. In my case the hood lettering is analogous to a factory emblem and I don't want to change it.

Why are you making fun of my dainty little hand model fingers. You know how sensitive I am about that. :buttkick:
I've been trying to get some stuff done at the night job. You know all the glamorous stuff everyone who builds one of these cars suffers through.
Puling out the old 390 mock up motor on Thurs. It took me a couple hours mainly because the cherry picker won't fit under the crossmember for some reason. It's like the car sits only 5", or less, off the ground or something crazy like that.:) Just for the heck of it I weighed the car without the motor and trans to get an idea where I was starting. It will be cool to catalogue how the weight keeps adding up as the build progresses.

The Z/28 Coupes I owned were all the "matching numbers" variety so they're "untouchable"…. and that whole thing gets real boring real fast unless you can afford to own the uber versions…
I'm a fan of cheap cars I can just beat on - drive - and move on when I'm ready. Oh - except if there's a "30" in the year -- then I want ultra expensive kit cars that I can sell for 35K or so when I'm done with 'em.

Yep.
The stand the motor is on is probably 15 so subtract that to get 360lbs starting weight.
The Findanza flywheel is 14lbs
My CVR waterpump is 5.8 lbs and the adapters are another 3.
My 3G alt is 15.4 lbs
RST clutch and pressure plate are 22.5lbs.
PS pump I'm not sure but maybe 15lbs.
Holley carb 13 lbs
Most the oil is back in the tank.
That's 82 lbs + maybe another 5 to 7 for the AL brackets.
So it should be right about 450 or a little less.
Need to add headers though they might as well count as part of the motor.

How about some Parts pictures? are those good?
As I kept trimming the firewall further and further to give myself clearance to set the motor down and back it became apparent that the stock hanging pedals weren't going to cut it.
Here was the first test fit with a minimal cut. In this picture the motor was still .25" off center and you can see I have no clearance between the VC and remaining firewall. You can also see how close the 4 bolts that hold the stock pedal hanger are to the VC. I ended cutting the firewall to the other side of the mounting holes so no more stock pedal hanger.:headscratch:
http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll306/superjinca/9bb036b3-1467-45f6-b755-d0c1217bce33_zps581fea87.jpg (http://s291.photobucket.com/user/superjinca/media/9bb036b3-1467-45f6-b755-d0c1217bce33_zps581fea87.jpg.html)
Earlier in the week Brett had pointed out I had plenty of room for a floor pedal set up. I agreed with him but my concern was the header collectors need to go somewhere and that path would be down near the footwell. But after cutting the firewall to where I wanted it and measuring it was clear I have a lot more flexibility with fitting the floor pedals than a hanging set. :hairpullout:
So I went shopping.
http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll306/superjinca/IMG_2387_zpsd355f5cb.jpg (http://s291.photobucket.com/user/superjinca/media/IMG_2387_zpsd355f5cb.jpg.html)
Although this is a 600 series Tilton Pedal set up it has the 900 series bracket to run the Series 77 master cylinders. The mounting of these is supposed to eliminate binding in pedal travel and the migrating of the bias due to some of the binding.
http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll306/superjinca/IMG_2389_zpsc3ab33ba.jpg (http://s291.photobucket.com/user/superjinca/media/IMG_2389_zpsc3ab33ba.jpg.html)
Having put the motor in the chassis where I want it to sit it is also clear that a front plate and midplate set up would make sense for mounting the motor.
The front plate will also give me a nice plane to use for the PS pump and alt mounting brackets that don't yet exist. Since I have a Peterson stackable mandrel drive I can use whatever existing PS or Alt brackets I like the look of and tailor the belt alignment via the position of the pulleys on the Peterson Mandrel. Those parts arrived long time ago so here is a reminder what they look like. This is better than digging through the wrecking yard this thread sorta is.:D
http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll306/superjinca/IMG_1699_zps598da9d8.jpg (http://s291.photobucket.com/user/superjinca/media/IMG_1699_zps598da9d8.jpg.html)
The Midplate will be a custom piece that Brett will fab. The front plate I got from Chris Alston Chassisworks. It has plenty of extra material I will trim off once all the final mounting positions of the motor and accessories are determined. As you can see in the photo my chief parts guy checked it all out and told me it was good to go.

Things always seem to move slower than you want but you need to keep that balance in life and not fixate on any one thing too much. The car is one part of my day to day life. What's not to like :D Other than a max pedal ratio of only 5.75 to1.
This will require some recalculations of master size and pad COF. :headscratch:
Have fun making the pedals fit. :G-Dub:
Well looking back a few pages you can see a picture of the toeboard to frame clearance and a nice void waiting for some master cylinders. After Brett had mentioned floor mount pedals I took a few measurements to see how much room was available. Seems pretty roomy.
As far as the issue you had with the angle of the pedals when mounted perpendicular to the floor. I'm a little taller than some so my seat will be as low as practical. I test fit the Kirkey seats once and mocked up a driving position. In my case with the seat was so low I noticed the opposite of you in that my original swing pedals seemed awkward since they were obviously designed with a seat whose base was 9" off the floor in mind. The floor pedals and my Kirkey low on the floorpans feels right at home like my old shifter kart seating.
Starting from scratch with seat, pedal and steering wheel position makes the recipe easier since they are all getting planned as a unit.

I purchased a set of floor pedals but as with all floor pedals their ratio is limited. They are 5.75 to 1 at best so using the 100lbs std driver force there is an obvious loss in clamping force.
My floor pedals have a .875 and .813 master cylinders. Intuitively I would think with the lower pedal ratio of 5.75 maybe I should be running the .813 master for the front and a .750 for the rear to raise the line pressure and achieve a total braking force closer to 4000.
I also understand we could achieve more braking force through the use of a higher COF pad.
Intuitively doesn't make for much of a scientific discussion so plugging in the master sizes and new pedal ratio into your chart would be the best starting point for a discussion.
I also understand that setting my overall suspension parameters, either tweener or high travel, will also dictate what brake bias 65/35 or 70/30 we are targeting.

Just to be sure Rob -- smaller bore MC makes MORE pressure not less -- so if you're going to want more front brake pressure (correct) than at the rears -- you'd want the smaller dia MC for the front brakes.
A larger MC bore will give "better" pedal feel but will make less pressure… sometimes this stuff comes down to driver preference - a modulated softer pedal feel vs a high hard pedal.

So you will hopefully get a laugh out of this, but... I'm starting a new design project at work. In my field, we use some kind of theme when we name our projects. My company founder is from Detroit, so he thought a car-based theme would be fun, and I decided we'd go with old musclecar names. We recently changed the plan for the project to go away from a minimalist approach to one that is a bit more, shall I say, "maximalist". So it seemed like a perfect choice to use "Torino" as my first project name in the famliy! :)
I spend entirely too much time on this site apparently...

Between the brake and throttle pedals there are too many adjustments.:willy: It's funny how you take something like pedals for granted until you have to start from ground zero in setting them up.:faint:
The Joes pedal is pretty slick. It has adjustable stops in both directions and a garage door spring to snap it back. Of course the carb side of the equation will also get a Joes return spring setup.

Rob,
I did not really crack the Pantera any more at Optima
I had a blast at Optima and Sema
Wish I could have gone to the Lateral g evening
but my Pantera buddy showed up to help that night
at 8pm
I thought I would start out right away busting your chops
as I have a Firebird buddy constantly bugging me about the firechicken
and it is always the Pantera first.. hope to even that out this next year
I know what you are going through because everything you
buy for a Pantera does not fit or needs to be Modified... I cannot
tell you how many times I looked at the wiring and hoses trying
to figure out where to run and mount things.. it takes time and
for those doing it themselves I give them a lot of credit
In the Firebird I have moved the Alternator three times in the last
year... Our Pantera group visited Moals shop the last two years
and they had a build going and we all were trying to figure out
how the steering was going to get past the headers.. they said
they were working on it... so even the big boys have issues
As far as your car being a beast my Firebird weighed in at 3710 lbs
at the Goodguys event earlier this year.. I just changed out the rear
leafs to monoleaves- yes still running old school but lost 70 lbs.. need
to go after the hood, rear glass, get rid of the rear seats etc.. it
will take time but I need to get the weight down
I appreciate all of Rons advice on the handling issues
That is where I really want to learn how to tune a car
instead of just driving them after they are done.. It took a
long time to get the Pantera neutral but then just before Optima
I put shorter tires in the rear and taller in the front to get the 200 rating
That car has 245's in front and 315's out back so your stagger is nothing
Talk about messing with the geometry
Greg Weld... I was going to go to Laguna today but I had date night
at the Sharks tank with my wife.. it was supposed to be tonight but
someone scheduled the game for 1pm today and I could not get them to change it:)... so I was stuck
I used to run with the Norcal Shelby guys a lot when I had my mustang
but now run with Checkered flag more.. less cars on track and less
guys bending things up.. Norcal has had a lot of wrecks lately but a
great group of guys and very fast
Finally I hate to say I am still a closet Camero guy.. I had a 69 z28 when
I was a kid and bought a 69 shell a few years back thinking I was going
to build a Pt car.. it sat for 5 years with no work on it so I sold it and
went back to working on the Firebird.. love that car as it was a $300
piece of crap 23 years ago. it has won a lot of events and evolved over
the years but eats motors- #9 in it now:)
I will stay active here as like a few have said we like to see something
different.. love the stance on your car..
Wondering how low is the bellhousing?.. I just raised the firebird up
1 1/2" because I only had 1 1/2" clearence on the dougs 3 1/2" collectors
What really scared me was the bellhousing was slightly lower than the headers that would scrape on the ground 2-3 times when I took it for a spin

On the dyno 12 quarts got the oil level where we wanted it. In the car the lines will be longer so I'm sure I'll be adding a quart or more.
You can start it without pre heating. Warm up time with 12+ quarts of oil may be a little while. I'm going to run a C&R radiator with a heat exchanger for the oil. We'll see what the morning warm up time is like without pre heating. I will have a heat probe in the tank and will add an external heat band if needed.
So as of now I don't know any more about the oil warm up than you.

Based on the front suspension travel I think you'll end up with, you will probably need around 70% front braking.
The cool thing with adjustable bias in the pedals is you can fine tune the bias to perfection without giving up any total braking force. (Unlike a proportioning valve which reduces braking force).
Changing from the planned 6-1 pedal ratio to 5.75-1 is a small change. Only a 4% reduction in fact. That does not dictate a MC change, as that would produce a much larger increase, of about 16%.
As you can see from my calcs below, dropping 1 step on both M/Cs puts it over 4000# of braking force, which in my experience is too much braking force for a mid-to-high travel suspension strategy. I think you'll find 3562# is plenty of braking force.
------------------------------------------------------
On another note, I do these calcs based on 100# of leg force at the pedal. In the racing world, we "tune & adjust" braking to fit the driver all the time. 100# is just a starting baseline #.
For smaller drivers ... I have raced cars with champion female drivers that weighed 100# and male drivers as young as 12 that weighed 72# ... I designed a brake package that decreased the amount of leg force required.
We don't want the pedal to be too hard to push, or you wear the driver out over long races ... and you don't want it to be too easy to push ... making it too easy to lock up the brakes. In then end, it's all about tailoring it to the driver.
For those of you who haven't met Rob, he's a big fella. So Rob, I'm thinking you pushing the brake pedal with 100# of force will be easy. I feel we need to be concerned that we don't make the brakes too easy for you to lock up.
Let's start with what I originally outlined but with the 5.75-1 pedals ... making 3562# total braking at 100# of leg pressure ... and see how the braking characteristics fit you. We'll "tune & adjust" to your tastes after you and the car get up to speed.

Rob,
I think if you only have 12-13 quarts with the heat
exchanger you should be ok.. My pantera has 10 quarts
and my water to oil cooler actually helps warm things
up fairly quickly.. I was worried about it when I autocrossed
it a few times as oil temp does not get that hot on
your first runs.. but the gauge told me it works

This is getting way too complicated!

Sieg,
I agree.. I remember when all I had to remember
was the + and the - for the coil.. now with all the
plumbing, wiring, pumps, relays etc what a pain and
I don't even have fuel injection.. don't get me
started on that issue

Does it have fuel and what's the track record! LOL
That was a totally sarcastic picture!
I absolutely love what Ron is contributing to those who want to learn what it really takes to make a car work right.......and beyond just throwing money at the project. Tweaking stock pick up points and modifying stock parts can return similar performance in many cases and leave people :headscratch: Think Smokey Yunick :D Personally I really like that approach.
Back in my desert racing days I remember getting beat by guy's that were on what appeared to be an identical bike to mine and wondering wtf!? That was before I really had an understanding (clue) of suspension set-up and valving modifications. I rode a fellow competitor's bike one day and a migraine inducing light came on......He's Cheating!.....oh wait there's no rule class against those mods. :sieg:

Reminds me of high school --- one guy puts a too big four barrel on his otherwise stock POS…
I'd tweak the curve on my distributor -- and cream 'em…. and they're then all talking about buying headers…. In the meantime their stock cam and too big four barrel didn't need it…
HAHAHAHAHAHA
Sometimes the guys on a "budget" do more with less and leave the high priced parts guys in the dust.

My quicktime bellhousing is cut the same. Did it in the mill.
Yea me too:rolleyes: Well maybe it was a Makita and a cut off wheel. :)
Hey Guys,
Rob & I already discussed this on the phone, but I figured I'd catch up the details for anyone following along.

Thanks Ron. It is a great benefit for anyone contemplating setting up any part of their car for you to weigh in on the reasons for making specific choices. I really enjoy the technical explanations of why.

Real world testing will answer that question for sure. I can't wait to find out.

Don't you have a 54 year old 390 to finish. :mock:
Yea low budget drag racer filling the bottom half of the blocks water passages with concrete to strengthen it. I wonder how much hp he was putting down for those 350 passes before it grenaded.
At least it went out in style.:wow:

I push on the brake pedal --- if I need more brakes… I push harder or for longer… if I push too much they lock up.
That's a simple "leg bias" system I've developed.

No Joe you can't have it. :guns:
It will eventually be welded back in now that the motor and transmission has been moved back 7.5".:D
I have the stock tunnel cross brace I drilled the spot welds out of and removed if you want one of those.
Does it make more sense now, why, it temporarily came out?

How is engine placement in relation to front wheel centerline now?

This gives you a good idea. The balancer is behind the rack and the front of the block is at or just behind the front axle.:D

It's like referring to the KPI, King Pin Inclination of your spindle when you don't have a Kingpin.:mock:

JerDog. Eventually.
I ran both setups on the dyno. My 701hp on E85 was made with a single 4150.
Back to back on Gas the first weekend on the dyno we got close to 25hp more with the dual quad over a single Dominator and about 35hp more than the single 4150. I don't own, or have access to a pair to borrow, of properly set up dual E85 carbs so I don't know what the E85 single vs dual quad hp difference would be. I'm sure the duals would also make more hp on E85. The intake is just a better overall design.
One day when the bleeding of $$ slows I'll build a matched set of E85s for the dual quad and it will go on the car. Just for the cool factor if nothing else. For now I'm just running my single 4150.
