Blair Patrick has used the same header guy for 15+ years. He's in AZ. I'm going to have him build my headers. Same primary sizes and collector design we ran on the dyno.:unibrow:

You using Greg Holman at REF for your headers??

Is it done yet??

So, I guess that I owe this to Rob after all the abuse about his land yatch. We have the Torino next to a 67 Chevelle in the shop. I moved both cars so the front bumpers are even... and here is the difference in length. The Torino is only about a bumper longer than a 67 Chevelle.

I was thinking today how I got myself into this mess.

I did a search on the FE forum and found the post from the day I bought my project. :willy:

The weekend after I brought it home I tore it down and found out the previous owner had set 20 thou of lash as if it was a solid, BUT it had hyd lifters :wow: No wonder the lifters clattered like they did. Looking closer I saw the stock springs were on the verge of coil bind so good thing he didn't preload the lifters or I probably would have dropped a valve.

Better to be lucky than good. :D

Rob (Login fefairlane)

I have a sickness. 60's Ford muscle cars. I keep looking at them, watching the auctions on e-bay, looking in the recycler, craigs list this site. I own a 67 GTA convertible Fairlane with a 390.

I couldn't help myself though.

I was watching a 69 Torino on e-bay in the San Francisco area and the same day my boss told me I needed to go up there for work.

I bid and won the car and with a one way ticket I was off. after looking the car over and paying for it I set out around 5:15 from downtown SF. Several hundred miles ahead of me in a car I've never worked on with only a small assortment of tools I brought for emergencies I'm off.

Exhaust leaks, check, Holley dominator manifold with double pumper, check, well at least the oil is clean and the coolant in the radiator looks good. Hey the gas gauge, wipers, lights and speedo work.

Cruising down the 101 (to avoid the possible snow on the grapevine, did I say I was driving to Orange county in SoCal?) I realize why I was embarking on a plan so stupid.

The 390 purred, although the exhaust leaks ruined the melody when the throttle was applied. Not a sound form the toploader or nine inch out back. One finger on the wheel or hands off and the car still tracked straight. there is something about a FE and a stick shift. The sound, the performance (if it had the right combo, mine currently doesn't). Suddenly the plan seemed great. Somewhere around Salinas a CHP officer pulls me over because my taillight are too dim. He send me on my way "that's a nice car be careful I'd hate to see someone rear end you". A stop at the next offramp and some sanding on the connections get me a better ground and better taillights.

The oils pressure and temperature are constant and good. The factory tach (yes it has one) doesn't work. I notice the wire isn't hooked to the coil but the connection is corroded so that will have to wait till I get home. I really shouldn't drive it home. The exhaust leaks and some lifter chatter tell me I might be using the last the motor has but if that is to be oh well, I will rebuild it sooner. Some Lucas oil stabilizer for the rest of the trip home (Not a true solution but a possible band aid for a tiered motor with some dumb add on parts).

Around 3:00 am I pull in to Tustin. Several hundred miles behind me. The exhaust leaks seem worse. the lifters sound like solids. I may have cooked the motor? well I planned on a tear down anyway. I'll fix the leaks, pull the valve covers to check the rocker shafts (and put the stock covers back on, anybody want a deal on some chrome Erson rocker covers?) change all the fluids and asses what I need to do from there.

She started fine again this morning. The toploader shifts nicely. I got her home and I've got one more FE project. 69 Torino GT 390, 4 speed, no console, AC, factory tach, Power disc brakes and steering. a good starting point and a great time driving down the coast with the humm of an FE.

It has been creating some interest at the engine shop ,it will look even better nestled between the rails in the car .I am heading back to work Monday so hopefully when i get home the build will be complete .Still some work ahead with the exhaust to be built from the collectors back .I will then finish fuel lines and fit the FAST ECU . Will also setup radiator looking at a AFCO twin pass .The only drama is the hot days in the shed we have had days in the high 30 's C makes it a little uncomfortable .All the best for Christmas and a Happy New Year .

Hey Poteet's car is the most over the top Torino that will ever be built. That doesn't make it the best. It is a showcase of amazing fab work I'll give it that.

Except for that Rick guy who won't trailer my car a couple miles.

Very neat project FEtorino! I hang out at Jay's site a bit. I currently have 5 FE powered vehicles with a few extra's hanging around.

I had a dual quad Tunnel Port in a 67 Fastback a few years ago, great fun!

Currently building the 66 F100 with a 482 Side Oiler. Project has been sitting for a couple years stalled because of a move etc.

Looking forward to seeing yours completed.

Blaine, Jerry's head is too stuffed with info on how to make a Chevy fast. I don't think he has the band width to learn about Fords at his advanced age :unibrow:

How about some details on your car? Is it a small block or an FE, auto or Toploader. It sure is pretty. If you haven't already let's start modifying it.

Ford won LeMans with a small block after the Euros got pissed by the whooping the 427 put on them and came out with the 5.0 rule so no shame in a SBF. I hope one day to have a paint job as clean as yours.

No worries about hijacking my thread sharing some cool cars with everyone here.

30 years later... I've bought a house or two and got married and saved some for retirement so I can blow some cash building my view of an ultimate muscle car.

Ah an actual build question. This has thrown me off. I don't know what to say.:offtopic:

It seems like a lot of work is done with the chassis done and the motor running (should I repeat that for DG) The motor running.:unibrow:

The reality is I've been doing a lot of work, research and planning. As has been said do something every day on your car even if it is calling to buy a part and eventually it will get done.

First a short list of big and $$ parts to buy.

The front Wilwood 6 piston brakes.
C&R radiator with integrated oil cooler and PS cooler.
T56 Magnum close ratio. I already have the RST clutch, bellhousing and AL flywheel.
Wheels... Finally making this decision will either kill me or be the biggest relief.
Seats.. Another hard choice
Custom headers.

Some coin tied up in getting those parts.

I'll probably drag it to AZ and have the headers built first.

Next I'll probably mount the seats and steering column. Once I am happy with the seating position I'll take it to a guy I know to get a cage built.:unibrow: I have a few other small fab projects to do at the same time. This will include mounting of my Dry Sump tank.

Drag it back home and start layout of the lines and final measurements to order the radiator

Then I'll put all the brakes on it and run the lines brake, oil and fuel.

Just writing this much down is making it seem like a long road. The list goes on. You know how much work there is in putting a car together.:willy:

"This 1958 Dodge Power Wagon W300M is equipped with the rare swivel frame option. We’ve never seen one before, but the customized frames were apparently made by a firm called Willock out of Western Canada. This truck looks like a fair deal even on a normal frame, but the added feature makes it a stand-out. Find it here on the Dodge Power Wagon Classifieds (http://bringatrailer.com/thats-an-older-listing-its-no-longer-available/#r=true&year=1958&car=Dodve%20Power) in New York for $20k."

"The frame is split right behind the cab and there is a large center bearing that allows a good amount of twist. Swivel aside, we love the black and red on this truck, and appreciate the black wheels and fenders that make it look more menacing than fire truck-ish."

Congrats on the progress. You're right, sometimes the research can take more time than anything. That list doesn't seem too long, but yah, those are some pricey items. I've been churning through my own list so I know what it's like. I just read through your entire build thread again. This thread is like a dedication to Torinos.

:faint: Ah mission accomplished:rofl: It is. Torinos and Tunnelport headed sideoilers. They both played a big part in Fords successful motorsports endeavors of the late sixties.:unibrow:

Rob is still working out the ideas for the inner fenders and possibly down bars from the firewall to the frame. The shock towers and most of the inner fender will definitely go. We just left it in for strength during transportation.

Pretty good shot of the frame rail to pinchweld difference. Not too bad considering it was a unibody car and we were able to get a 3.5" - 4" frame rail in place.

When I was trying to spec out the trailer - I asked for a 6000# lift (over the standard 4000#) and I wanted 24' feet in the "garage" space. The dealer knows my cars and said -- Greg, you have a '32 Ford and a '65 Mustang you want to haul around....

I said - Dave, I have friends - and they may want to go with me somewhere... and pointed him to this thread.

So I get a txt last Wed from PHil saying they are going to Barret Jackson with their Semi. Last minuet change of plans for them. Seems there is some space for the Torino in there. I just need to be there Sat morning before 10.

WTF am I stupid :lostmarbles: , a ride back home, I need to make this happen.

"Load it up" is my txt response.

The last picture of it outside their shop is prior to loading in the trailer.

I need a copilot. "hey Brett you need to go to BJ in Scottsdale. Want to go pick up a Torino?"

Well actually I said "my car" so in his defense maybe he forgot and thought it was a Camaro.

"sure"

Ok the plan is hatched. Work all day friday come home hitch up the car trailer drive 6 hrs to AZ, sleep a few hours load up the car go to the show and then drive back 6 hrs back home sat night.

Here's a tip. If I call and ask you to go on a road trip say NO. I am a ****ty event planner and never budget time for sleep. Again in Brett's defense I don't think he realized how bad my plan was.

I get home and get things ready. Brett is wrapping up things at home and makes it over to my place in Orange about 6. Hey plenty of time still left for sleep probably 7 hrs, we might as well get something good to eat.

So we run down the street to my favorite local spot for some fish tacos. Funny I never noticed all the lanes were narrow in this parking lot and on Friday night all the spots were packed. It might be a tough proposition to park a Crew cab long bed F350 4x4 and 19' car trailer. :headscratch:

Yea this isn't going to happen let's park down the street. after all we have nothing but time to burn:lol: Hey the fish tacos were good at least I didn't start drinking beers. Well it's 8 we better get on the road. How much time left for sleep 6 hours. :headscratch: Ah **** that's plenty.

this traffic on the 91 friday night really sucks. I guess I should have taken that into account. No big deal still plenty of time.:_paranoid

So we get out of rush hour traffic and on the open road. Past the 15 out to the 60 on to the 10 we are making great time let's keep going and get a coffee in Blythe an hour or so from now for the home stretch.:)

Indio behind us up and over Chiracco summit, the truck is running great, Brett somehow is putting up with all the talk of Torinos.

Now out in the middle of nowhere past Desert Center brake lights. Nothing but a string of brake lights in the dark. " Brett is that field of dreams thing up ahead? what's all this about?"

Brett "I see some flashing lights up there, probably an accident"
Me "really an accident I don't see it"

An hour later,
Brett " I see some flashing lights up ahead"
Me " dude I think you've seen ET to many times I don't see any lights"

An hour later

"Brett you're right I see the lights" Well we'll still get some sleep, it's overrated anyway.

Around 430 am we pull into the hotel. " Hey can we get an 0830 wake up call" By the time I brush my teeth and crap that's still 3 1/2 hrs sleep. Heck I'm only 48 I don't need mush sleep.

I set the alarm on my phone just in case. I can't leave Phil hanging when he's doing me a solid by bringing me my car. I need tog et up and be on time.

The phone rings in the morning. It's wake up time. :headscratch: Hm I wonder why my alarm didn't go off on my phone? Ohhhh AZ is an hour ahead. Well 2 1/2 hours sleep is plenty I have a car to load.

So we pull up and my car is already out of the RS trailer and on the ground. I caught Brett in a moment of Torino envy. Seems things will work out fine.

Maybe:popcorn2:

Well anyone who sees the car should be at a loss for words for three reasons.

1. Troy's imagination and talent along with the talent of his crew seem limitless.

2. Poteet's budget ......seems limitless.

3. It's a 69 Torino after all... :D

Car looks great!! Now finish the damn story!!! :warning:

I don't feel like looking over my shoulder every time I leave the house so here it goes.:_paranoid

So we get there and the car is already on the ground and ready to load on the trailer. I'm playing it not acting too excited or anything. :omg:   You know, no big deal to me just hanging out getting a car.

Anyways the guys remind me stop staring an lend a hand loading my complete 9 inch housing, third member with Watts linkage, disc brakes and tires (what was in my car) in the back of the truck.

WTF this thing is heavy and awkward even with four of us. I feel beat like I didn't get any sleep. Geeze... what's my problem that can't be it.:headscratch: The bed of this truck is only 39 or 40" off the ground this shouldn't be a big deal.

Heave ho.

http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll306/superjinca/rear_zps5baa43bd.jpg

Al right that's done time to stare at the car again right. "hey Rob want to back the truck up" You see that is a guy with class trying to remind a half asleep dumbass like me 'UH we need to get to the show, can you help out a little and stare at your car after we are on our way'.

I snap out of it (or I think so) and get in the truck to position the trailer. As I make like three attempt to line the trailer up to the car I realize I think I'm still asleep. Geeze I'm glad there is nothing to hit out here. WTF. Ok close enough for government work we can start loading.

It appear I wasn't the only guy who missed a few things in the hast of trying to get on the road last minuet. Wait for it you'll see what I mean soon.

So Brett brought a small winch and bracket to bolt to the front of my trailer. At least he seems to be doing well with no sleep he gets that thing on trailer quick and is paying out the cable. (oh yea fat joke crowd it was only a 2000lb atv winch and it pulled the car up the trailer :mock: ) Jeremy has grabbed some axle straps and we are hooking the car up. Seems the car is kinda low. 3.5 or 4" to the lowest point with the skate board wheels. My trailer has a dovetail although short it should be ok. The car gets most the way up the trailer and all of a sudden the winch is laboring. (No the car isn't fat). Look under there somebody left a deep socket on the trans mount and it hangs down a couple inches and is now wedged between the car and trailer. How cool is that.:bang: Brett lets the car roll back a bit but that socket seems determined to go home with me now so out come the boards to go under the rear tires so we can clear the crest of the dovetail with the socket. A few minuets of back and forth and another set of boards and we get the socket past the crest in the trailer.

Ping... clink... ding... WTF now it decides to just fall off. 2000+ mi in a trailer from IL; loading and unloading twice out of their rig; and now after we F around for another 20 min with these boards it just fall out?

Hey Murphy thanks a bunch could you at least bring me one of your Irish Stouts while I suffer through this? :bang: :bang:

Whatever it's on the trailer and Phil and Jeremy are helping us throw the straps on it. Did I remind you these guys, may be, better people than they are fabricators? Remember they had to get to the show to help out somebody else. They stuck around and made sure we were all set before they left. Class acts.

Cool beans now Brett and I just need to park the trailer in this lot and lock it up and we can go to the show.

Maybe

Last you guys heard Brett and I were siting in a dirt lot in Scottsdale looking at a Torino on a Trailer.

I realized I had not brought any of my cable locks :bang: Looking the car over we noticed that one of the rear wheels only had one lug nut. Turns out RS was waiting on a set of studs to match the front 12mm stuff. Last min thrash to get the thing on the ground and out the door resulted in only one nut on the drivers rear.

All right it's not the end of the world just head down the street, find an auto parts store and pick up some nuts and a couple locks.

Scottsdale land of clogged streets and medians everywhere perfect place to drive around lost in a crew cab longbed. Hey check it out a tire store let's head there. I walk in the store and guess what.... everyone in AZ is tire shopping.

Patience, just stay calm, don't let the lack of sleep and this line get to you no big deal. 15 min later I get to the front of the line. Hey I need some open ended lug nuts. "we don't have any" WTF are you a tire store?

Where is an auto parts store? COme to think of it where is Brett? Oh yea he said he was heading across the lot to McDonalds. I'll just call him. He what do you know the cell service here isn't working, imagine that. I'll just drive over there.

Right about the time I get to the other side of the lot Brett picks up the phone and the call doesn't drop. "where are you at?" "I'm back at the tire store"
Of course you are, of course.:bang:

Hey at least Home Depot down the street had a couple locks and good directions to the auto parts store. Now the auto parts store had lugs but you know we aren't positive which size. 1/2 20 or 12mm 1.5? I'll get both. Luckily I remember that I only have one socket in the truck, a 1/2" drive breaker bar and a 13/16 socket for the lugs on my truck and trailer. I check these lugs and they are 3/4" so I'll grab an deep socket off the 1/2" drive rack. Man I'm glad I remembered that.

Back we head to the car. "Brett we still have plenty of time to enjoy the show."

Back at the trailer the 1/2 lugs aren't it. Wait the 12mm aren't either. WTF? I look at the bag the 12mm lugs were in. 12mm 1.125. I hate when things are in back and the guy grabs the wrong one. I hate it more when I'm to stupid, or in to much of a hurry, to double check the bag before I leave the store. :bang: We lock the trailer up and back to exchange the lugs.

Back at the store and I swap the lugs. We have what we need let's go park the truck and go to the show. When we get back we'll just hitch the truck up and throw the lugs on no need to do it now. Yea you guessed it this or something else I did in the last hour was a mistake.

We park the truck and hop on the bus to BJ. I won't try to describe the show but BJ Scottsdale is worth a trip at least once in a lifetime if you are into cars. We hang out with Neal as the first two of the RS builds go across the block. Like I said he's a great guy and shooting the sh@# with him was a good time. Both the Duece and the truck fetch a pretty good price.

There is a lot to see so Brett and I head off to look around. Stop and buy some overpriced food and beer and take it all in. :relax: :popcorn2:

A couple hours into it I'm beat and said lets find a spot to sit down for a bit. Right outside the main tent there is a HUGE big screen of the auction inside and a few golf carts parked the provide perfect bleachers for us to relax.

After a half hour the cart driver shows up and asks are you guys going along with us? Thanks but were out.

Man I feel 100% better, my batteries are recharged. All that BS is behind us smooth sailing from here on out. :lmao: :lmao: :lostmarbles:
