They really have an awesome shop out here in IL. Seeing my chassis in person has got me more stoked about my project than ever. The chassis is there but unseen, nothing is visible under the rocker. :unibrow:

The attention to detail on all their projects is outstanding. Even the Camaros look good.:D

Phil and Jeremy spent a lot of time walking through my build with me today and yesterday. Got a chance to test fit a 275 up front and get some preliminary wheel dimensions and a good idea of tire sizing. It really has been a pleasure dealing with these guys.

When I sent Phil my dry sump to mock up the motor and build the mounts he said I'd be better off with the car being upside down.

I want the car to look like a 60s muscle car. Sure the low stance and wheels will give it away as not stock but I am not looking for obvious bling. To me the beauty of the chassis will be in the way the car rides, stops and corners while appearing to not even be there. :D If somebody is really that intrigued they can stoop down and look underneath.

The weekend after SEMA I'm heading to TN to pick up my motor and then Blair and I are off to Rogers MN to dyno my motor. I've been gathering up some oil lines and fittings along with an in line filter for that session.

Love Black wheels, but so does everyone else.

So to push the new look I vote for dark gun metal gray in a semi gloss or flat. Not sure if the name gun metal gray is correct but basically a few notches down from a flat black that you see on some current wheels.

thats my 2 cents

Never say never, I was on a flight to Oakland CA yesterday next to a guy from Australia who was out here looking at a couple cars, you never know where life may lead you.

I'm glad you finally made it on here with your build in the introduction section. When you get some time you should put some more details together and start a build thread. I'm sure you've seen Dougs car, Ripped, another nice PT mustang. There is also a guy from Hungary building a PT cougar that is FE powered on here.

If I've been drinking tequila, sure thing. :unibrow:

If I was going to run the argent GT trim I would think that combo would be sweet. But in Cobra trim the only colors on the body will be the body color, black and polished/chrome. Since my vision of this thing is stock body lines and trim with a bit of homage to Fords initial dominance in the aero wars of NASCAR the wheels will probably end up plain old black.

There are a lot of things about this build that are going to be plain. I really don't want anything to jump out when you first see it.

I just want you to think you just saw this.

So I had a few moments while in the general area and made a call to go visit the Roadster Shop. Always respected these guys and the beautiful work they turned out but really had no idea what I was in for….

Rob called it a candy store. He’s right. More like a Disneyland for carnuts. This place is like no other hotrod shop I’ve ever seen. 25 employees, all of them busy. Probably 20+ builds going on. Each one, more creative than the last. A couple of top secret, no pics allowed as well. Wait till you see ‘em.

You walk in, this is in the showroom. I’d love to own this car. I’d build it and leave it in bare metal:

Remember that wall of car bodies waiting to be built? Well, they’re past that now. No room for shells. Too many frames to be built, assembled and shipped.

http://i885.photobucket.com/albums/ac52/flash911/RShop%201012/2012-10-24_09-41-29_512.jpg

I’ve seen the display frames many times at shows since they came out. Maybe it’s just me, but the finished product just does not compare to what I l saw/observed from in-process stuff (I’m sick, I know). If you saw it in person you’d know. From the rails, to the bushings, to the control arms.

They're living the lifestyle. That many projects, that much success...it's not for ametuers. They got where they did by keeping their eye on the ball.

I was only there for an hour. That's all the time I had before I had to trek back to my real world. Every work station the guys said hi. They instantly knew I was a fan. I'd guess they appreciate when someone comes in who knows what they're lookin at and smiles...:D

Ron, Much thanks for your great review of the shop! I really appreciate your kind words about what we are doing here. The guys in back definitely appreciate when someone is impressed with their work. I will be sure to pass on your comments to everyone in the shop.

I wish I had known that you were going to be here. I would have definitely liked to spend some time with you. I was busy most of the morning with another potential customer going over a pretty cool mustang project. (Don't worry Rob, this one will have a Ford motor in it. Funny story, his first car was a 69 Torino and was shocked to see one getting the PT treatment.)

Thanks again Ron for posting up the pics and your impression of our facility.

No interest in that.

I'm a Ford fan not a Petty fan, I just respect the king for being a great driver. The Mopar aero cars were a response to my ugly duckling :unibrow: and then Fords Talledega and Mercurys Cyclone Spoiler II in 69.

Petty in 69 is interesting because it was the only year he raced something other than a Mopar product. He was pissed they wanted him to stay in the Roadrunner when he knew the Torinos and Cyclones were way ahead on Aero so he jumped ship to FORD.:wow:  He came in second that year but he did win a lot of short track races including Riverside.

David Pearson won his second and third NASCAR championships in the Boat in 68 & 69. After that he decided to just run part time. It's a shame because his part time winning % was record setting and it seems he could have captured a few more championships.

http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll306/superjinca/1968_DAVID_PEARSON_HOLMAN_MOODY_NASCAR_FORD_TORINO _427_FRONT_1.jpg

Here is Mario Andretti in his Cyclone. In 67 he won the Daytona 500 in a Fairlane. There was a lot of politics in racing then just like today. Chevy was basically siting out and NASCAR had kaboshed the Ford Cammer to help keep the Hemi competitive.

http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll306/superjinca/MarioAndretti-1968.jpg

The idea for my car is based on NASCAR being the reason for the FE TunnelPort and that Road Race winning Petty car has a great PT stance.:D

Hey thanks a lot. :D

As far as the TunnelPort heads I'll tell you tomorrow night after I get off the dyno if they have and advantage over Medium risers.

From a $$ perspective call Blair Patrick and have him do you a set of Edelbrocks. Edelbrock sells a pro-port version which is basically a blank slate for a guy to cut his won ports. Blair has a couple of CNC ports that make some big hp.

I don't think you can get a Genisis block right now. There is some BS going on with the company so it is my understanding it's Pond or Shelby if you want a block. The Pond block is a better piece than the Genisis anyway.

We had a O class stocker motor on the dyno the day before, made 370hp with break in oil a 465 Holley and .400 lift cam on that one. We had to take it off and throw mine on and rig a stand for the dry sump pan. :faint:

We got 12 total pulls on mine but only 8 of those were tuning. We just got over the 700hp mark. Avg from 4500 to 7200rpm was 645hp and 584 tq.

Takes 2 big carbs to make that power?

Hey 12 hours with motors and dyno sure beats workin!

Don'y worry one or both of the single combos I'm runing today should also kick you A$$.

Awesome Rob!

Congrats, nice to see an iron headed ford making some steam!

Thanks. Man after 3+ years of collecting parts and thinking about combos it was nice to finally see some #s. I have to thank Blair Partick. The guy really knows these motors.

The thing actually will idle below 900rpm and pull 10in of vacuum down there. It should be pretty tame on the street.:D

D

What would I swap it out with a new Tunnelport manifold out of the Summit catalogue? I'm stoked on the power output and more importantly the big flat delivery curve.

Intake side isn't the problem. The exhaust ports on these motors suck by todays standards. A lot has been learned in 40+ years. We left a lot of hp on the table by not filling and reshaping the exhaust side. Blair came up with a cam and some other tricks to crutch the exhaust side.

Now that we've run this combo he's pretty sure there is some easy hp to be had with a different cam profile. For now I'm good with what it is putting out.

Jay will send me the dyno files and I'll post them up. We did some initial runs from 3-5k with each combo so we know what she does down there. Don't worry even at those rpms I have more torque than 200tw tires can handle.

I've been around the dyno quite a bit (buddy owns one) and it's funny how some motors might make a nice piece of paper -- but when they're pulling I'm thinking... I'd be changing that or Ouch or something else. I like 'em when they just pull and the rpms climb.

Not that I know of. The front bumper is just a rear bumper so that part is easy to find. Talladegas get sold now and then and aren't really that expensive. If you want that body style just keep your eyes open and one will pop up.

I guess I'm going to be the one in the minority, but I'm not sold on those wheels for your car. They're a stunning design with a lot of thought and just as much fancy machine work to make all of the rounded shapes. I know the new Grip Equiped line seeks to blend elements of contemporary and vintage design, and that wheel is exactly that. However, for that reason I see it being much more at home on a retro styled late model car, like Karl's Parnelli Jones 302, or something with crazy modifications in the same vein as the Goolsby Mustang or Roadster Shop 'Vette, or a car that seeks more modern influence. I've always thought of your car being as being old school and devoid of attention getting billet in favor of some vintage stock car feel.

Ah hell, what do I know. Besides, it is your car!

Whatever wheels I do with they will have no exposed hardware and they will be any color as long as it's black. The wheels won't jump out at you but they will be from a race proven vendor. The quality of them will have a certain amount of unavoidable bling. Not something that jumps at you from across a parking lot but when you look close you will see something special.:D

I saw these billet cup style wheels at SEMA. These were 18s but maybe they would do a 19 for my rear. They would fit the bill for sure.

I hear what Matt is saying and I can appreciate his point but I disagree. I hate retro wheels on modern cars. Haven't seen one yet that I think "works".

On the other hand, I think the wheel does a nice job of balance old vs new for Rob's "old and new" car... old motor and new chassis (even though most will not know it's there).

Altho that Nascar wheel is just too bad ass.

There.... my worthless opinion is done.

I drive past a Mini dealership everyday, and this is what I was thinking of when I made the last post about the thinking that the wheels might be too contemporary-retro for the rest of your car. If my brain hadn't already made this association, I would probably be all over them, especially in black. The more I look at the black spokes with machined highlights, the more I'm starting to like the look of those Laguna wheels on the Torino. I'm still going to tell you that you have badass looking Mini Cooper wheels though. I can't unsee that association.

*edit* the more I see those wheels, the more I like them. I might have to get a set of mini look a likes for my fastback!

Black but no machine highlights the machined portion would be black. Any color as long as it's black.:D

Well you still found it.

The build doesn't have a name it's just a Torino. When it's finished it will have the factory Cobra badging without Torino badges like a Fairlane Cobra. It left the assembly line as a Torino so that's what it is. Like I said it doesn't have a name.

Now back to the thread name, if you think a Ford guy came up with the thread name change you're wrong. :unibrow:

So much more fun than just building silly cars...

I'm with Matt Man --- I like the wheels with the machined face on the spokes... but since it's a FORD and only has one color choice - then maybe the machined faces could be MATT black and the rest could be Henry Ford shiny black?

Sometimes I even surprise myself!

That's it!! That's the wheel Rob. Look no further. It will top of the Torino reall nice.

I like those new rims, Rob. I'd stay with a dark shade on them though to match the darker paint scheme.

I smell what you guys are stepping in

+1 Those will look killer!

We are getting real close to completing our end of the build on the Torino. Trying to finish up the twin turbo Camaro for SEMA got in the way of progress along with a big push to get the Fairlane ready for paint and another 2 projects completed in the final metal stages.

Rob has been patient and a good guy to work with, despite his choice in cars or motors. :unibrow: Rob's chassis should be back from powder coating any day now. Then it gets assembled and off to Cali. I'll post a few pics up when it arrives.

Back and a little lower, nothing drastic since my firewall remained stock.
