View Full Version : It's finally out my 69 Camaro!
Things are moving at a rapid pace right now thats for sure. Just got word the grill is finally finished. And all the major fab is just about done. Troy is going to do the first round of body work. We decided to do this so Troy can make sure all the little detail items are all good, so when I get the car I will not have any welding to do everything will be addressed..I'm really getting excited that this is getting closer to the end. Troy wants the car to be ready by Columbus. So we have 10 months left to finish! It sounds like alot of time but we all know how that goes!!!!:)

We found a few rust spots in the bottoms of the doors a decided it would be best to just install new skins rather than to patch in. Also I really did not want to run the heater lines across the engine bay so we hard lined them up and under the intake to a bulk head on the firewall behind the engine. This will basically keep them hidden for a clean look!

Great build so far. I look forward to seeing the finish. I've been a lurker for awhile and finally got my approval to post. Troy it looks like we have the same grinders and tool aresonal lol. Wish I was half as good but I need to find someone willing to teach and push me to the level as I don't have the shaping equipment to my expense and the place I work for doesn't really do much of that at all.

Yeah, I know right. It's gonna be amazing when it all comes together.
Troy has done a ton of small mod's to my car that are pretty cool. Some things I had a hard time agreeing with but in the end I think Troys Ideas speak for them self. The color will be black with Lexus Tigers eye accents. This is the Lexus color on my wheels .

I thought about that Greg but I have to have them working the way they were intended. Its just me.
its a pain to get them right but its doable.
if you make the two wholes on the core support bigger it gives you some much needed wiggle room . you'll be surprised how much alignment gets better with just a slight movement. once you get them where you want them. place a washer (with correct ID )to cover enlarged whole, trace perimeter and cut it out, weld washer of correct gauge to match core support and you'll have a nice pretty finish with correct whole location.
also playing with shims ( adding / subtracting ) on door shaft I also used a washer / shim on the core support bolts between core and housing to tilt up or down.
its going to take some pulling and pushing on the rest of it.
hope this helps

I'd be the same way..........a friend tried to talk me into doing the RS conversion on my car when I first got it 20+ years ago and I looked at the system in the factory build manual and started counting pieces and said to myself no f'n way I'll go insane. I'm sure the DSE system is much easier but.....
Good Luck!

Oh I'm a master with the shims thats for sure Frank!! I did exactly what you said and it does help a ton. What worries me the most is Troy said every time he took something off the car it never went back the same. These assemblies mount to the core support witch mount to the sub frame so I'm trying to come up with way to,PIN/MARK everything that the assemblies mount to and hopefully it will help when they go back together:popcorn2:

I was pretty sure you would be the man with shim/ adjustments , being a body man by trade. I agree with you on the car going back together. It can move on you quite a bit. I'm also going to be doing some kind of marking or pin for the same reason. For my self It helps that I have personally broken it and built it some many times that kind of know the car.
Hope you make it out to west coast for some events. would like to see that thing in person.

OMG! Thank you Brent!:guns:
Well here are some pictures of what doesn't seem like a whole lot of progress but let me tell you these headlites and grill have been a nightmare!!! What your looking at is the FINAL fit . The gill opening is made from fiberglass and just seems to change every time I take it out and put it back in. The picture on the top right shows how tight the line is . I can take the grill off and put it back on and the friggin line would be to wide WTF!!!! So after more than forty times taking it on and off and almost pitching it in the trash I finally got the POS to stay in one place. I had to fill and strengthen the back side to keep it from moving . By doing that it goes back in the same position everytime I take it on and off now. I'm finding out the little details take a lot of time . I'm on to the engine compartment next . I should have the first round of primer on in a couple of weeks.

Well Mike and I have been making progress! It don't look like much but let me tell you the amount of details you have to pay attention to is incredible ! We spent an intire day just fitting the window trim!:bang: When you put these things on you don't realize how bad they fit so your constantly putting on, taking off, putting on taking off ,you get the picture!! When you start tightening things up its amazing how the smallest inperfection sticks out. Your not going to get away with ''thats close enuff'' its going to jump out if you don't address it. With all that being said we are going to have the first coat of primer on at the end of this month . We have the hardest details done. The last pain in the azz is going to be the drip rails. And thats going to be a battle I already know it ,but will get it done just like everything else it will just take some time.

People can never fathom why these cars cost so much to build.... yet want perfection everywhere... and moan about seeing a "million dollar" car and make statements about "how could it cost that much"? I always just laugh. The hours and hours - days and weeks it takes to achieve perfection. You're lucky Mario that you can do these things yourself. When Rudy and I were doing his Camaro and we'd work all day... at the end of the day I'd look at him and say - "okay, that's two guys @ 8 hours..... so 16 hours of labor today @ $80 an hour" and we didn't get that much done!

Well put Greg! I now fully understand why it cost so much for "HIGH END" body and paint. I just had a conversation this morning with Rodger from Iron Works . We talked about this very subject. The amount of detail you have to attend to is incredible , every line ,every corner ,every piece has to be tended to . The more detail, the more work, and thats where the money comes in. I just finished fitting the front and back window moldings on my car. I spent 16 hours and I'll use Gregs hourly rate 16 hours x $80.00 per hour (two full 8 hour Sundays) fitting these moldings so there PERFECT. $1200.00 to fit moldings WTF!!! If Troy or anyone would of told me that before I did it myself I would of laughed my azz off are you kidding me!. I've been keeping track of my hours and where my car sits at this point I have close to $12000.00 not including the first round of fill n blocking Troy did $5000.00 ! $17000.00 and still more detail work to complete. Not one coat of primer on the car yet. Bottom line is when you see these RS , RingBrothers, Dutchboys, etc,you can fully understand why these cars look the way they do the owners payed for perfection and it didn't come cheap.

"WOW! Really nice hot rod!! Must of cost you 10 grand for that paint job"!!! I nod... and smile.... and think to myself -- try 4 times that.
Try building an s10 and have people tell you they could have built the entire truck exactly like mine for $20,000 dollars.
I even had a shop owner say he could duplicate my truck exactly for 20 grand I told him I would give him an additional 20 grand in cash if he could. He gave me his Shop phone number and told me the bet was on and I have never heard from the guy.

I'm one of those guys that never would of thought paint was so expensive.
Having gone thru it now, and learning all the steps involved to make a show quality paint job, when I hear $40-50k for body and paint, I'll just be like "yep".
GregWeld
02-19-2015, 05:07 PM
Well -- and just because a lot of people are reading these things -- I'll add that "paint" is subjective.... like how much paint?? Painting the block? The transmission? The chassis? Does your paint job include gapping or is that someone else doing that? Are we painting the engine compartment show quality or just blacking it out?
On little hot rods --- my chassis is every bit as nice as the body... and that included all of that being bodyworked to perfection... and the jambs etc are just as perfect... and the master cylinders are painted body color and bodyworked...
Obviously the less you want perfect.... the less labor it takes. But people fail to really look at all the details of these show cars -- and then equate that to what they're talking about money wise. I've seen engine bays with incredible paint and detail... and I think WOW! OMG...

I have to say when you first told me what Gwens Brizio was going to cost for paint and body I thought WOW your getting the shaft on that deal there's nothing to that car! But I could never be more wrong I can tell you that. And as you look at the detail the car speaks for itself, and again you paid for that detail. When I picked my car up from Troy and he gave me the time line of when he needed it back (four months) I really believed I had a extra month to play with, thinking I would blow right through it no problem.:snapout: I will never look at these high end builds again and think, whats the big deal thats for sure. It does if you're at Earl Scheib!!! LOL
Weld, have you never seen that show called OverHaulin? Kind of like that show where they build a house in a week.:peepwall:
Funny --- here's the calculation on that show though..... there's probably 8 or 9 people working 8 hour shifts round the clock for 2 shifts or 16 hours a day (you don't see that part) - 7 days - so the total time spent on those heeps is about 1000 hours.... My guess is there could be even more people than that if you calc the outside vendors hours... and if you've seen those cars in person (in the past - don't know about now since they kinda quit taking them around to shows) -- I'd be pissed if they took my car!! Okay - it's way more car than the folks would/could get on their own -- but these ain't SEMA builds that's for sure.

Mario,
Just think of Rob Schnieder in Waterboy saying "You can do it". But you have to say it the way he does it or it won't motivate you too well. :trophy-1302:
Started first round of blocking. I never used a polyester primer before so I wasn't sure how it was going to sand . I was pleasantly surprised when I started with the 80 grit at how easy it was.! Did the roof in less than 45 minutes using my big azz long board . The rest of the car should go pretty quick!

Just didn't want to keep posting pictures of boring ''sanding'' pictures because that's all Mike and I have been doing! But the good news is, I have come to my senses and decided to return it to Troy at the end of this month.I came up with many reasons to do this . I looked at the main reason and that was ''time'', I work close to 100 hours every week witch only leaves me with Sundays ,I'm only able to get 5-8 hours of work in. At that pace the car will take another two years to complete!!!! The second was getting all these finished panels and parts back to Troy with out damaging them. Troys shop is two hours away something is going to get F^CKED UP! And that's not counting going back and fourth from my house to my shop. Plus my friggin garage is a disaster its going to take me a week to get that clean! So now it will go back to Troy for him to finish the jamb work and engine compartment, and some small detail work. I have all the exterior body done. Then once Troy finishes I'm going there to lay the color on at his NEW SHOP!. I feel this is best . I have to come to a end with this project and this is the only way its going to happen. Troy wants two cars at Columbus this year. One for Street Rod,and one for Street Machine. So that's about it ! Stay tune!!!:D :G-Dub: :popcorn2:

WTF! I watched TV last night and GasBagMonkey Garage was having a "show quality" paint job done and they had 24 hours to get it all done.
They quoted the "materials" as costing $3,000 -- so I figure the entire job - with 24 hours (at $100 per hour per person) of labor was worth $5,400. Put 2 guys on it and the cost is a whopping $7,800.... put three guys on it and we're up to $10,200
