Perfection takes time. :unibrow:

Yes it does! Remember, Pete isn't just a painter....he's an artist!

Today’s update - I have been talking with both Pete and the shipper and trying to nail down the ship date. Pete is right at the end of his work on Karma...but we all leave for SEMA in a couple weeks, so it looks like it won't be picked up before that. He is trying real hard to have it done before he leaves for Vegas so I can have it picked up the second week of November....or that's the current plan! Still a work in progress! Who knows, We just may be having Thanksgiving Day Dinner in my garage....anyone hungry?!! :lateral:

Just checking in, I haven't read the entire thread but he's had the car for 2 years? What all is being done to it?!? I'm not sure I could survive 2 years without my car...

Maybe I didn't want to waste 126 pages. Cant someone give a few cliffs? I remember seeing the thread start a few years ago when it was sent there to have bad body work fixed, then saw it pop back up. Sorry I dont have a ton of free time to waste.

Thanks for the post though! It really helped...

Short Story:

Race Rodz failed....twice!

L-g.net comunity came to the rescue and was determined to get the build back on track! They raised enough money to get the car to Pete and quite a bit left over to get it back home...I will gladly pay the rest! :lateral:

Mario stepped up and donated a lot of money to cover the cost of materials needed to fix the car!

Pete (comp-spec) offered to 'fix' the car and 'make it right' if I could get it to him (3k miles away!)....how could I resist! Oh, and on his time and dime!! :hail:

Meanwhile I had been talking to Steve and Nick at Camaro Performers. They adopted the car as a 'tech car'! We mamed it Karma, they did a lead-in story and a years worth of tech articles on the car while Pete and crew @ Compition Specialties worked their majic!

Also, a lot of others joined the team and helped elevate the car to the next level....a real dream we are living! They are listed in my signature....thanks again!!

So far Pete has:
Stripped the car to bare metal, replaced all of the metal on the back of the car (thanks to Classic Industries & CP's!), did what it took to make the new front sheet metal 'fit', finished the 3-piece spoiler that Chris started, finalized the fitment of the custom front valance Mike at Muscle Rodz sent our way, chipped all the failed finish out of the trunk and prepped for new finish, repaired and painted the interior, installed the new Speed Tech frame including ATS spindles and Wilwood brakes, gaped the car and body worked it, primed and sanded countless times, painted the car (base and clear), Re-blocked the clear, laid out and painted the stripes, recleared everything, and reshot all the satin black parts of the car. And mounted up my new tires when no local shops would touch my Fikse wheels!

What he has left to do from what I understand:
Finish cut and buff, final assemble the car, spray the trunk, install the headliner and front and rear windows, detail everything, box up any parts that won't get bolted to the car at this point. And finally take some pics to share with us all!

I'm more than sure I have forgotten and/or never even new of many things that took place....but that's the compressed version of what has happend to our car in the last two years!

Oh, and lets not forget the killer rendering Carter banged out in record time so we would have something to work off!!

It's been crazy fun and has allowed me to meet many great people and friends! From what I have heard the car is coming out better than steller and I can't wait to see it! You should know that I don't get emailed pic....I see then first and only here in this thread and on the pages of Camaro Performers! So as you can imagine....I'm dying to see even a front quarter shot! I've yet to see it with the stripes on it! Pete's holding out for that major SHOCK when I see it! Can't blame him really!

So there's my long winded (I'm known for it!) version of what's happened and where we are at now! :hail: :lateral: :hail:

Man, that's great news brother----patience is certainly something we get to learn when dealing with these cars isn't it? For all the crap you have been through, it's going to be such sweet payback (to steal Todd's title for a moment) when you are able to walk out in the garage and have it sitting there--let alone being able to work on it and then that first drive.

Will you be at Optima?

You must be chomping at the bit. Pete & his main man, Brian do great work and wants you to be blown away when you see the car and I know you will. Last I saw, which was a while ago, it looked KILLER!
If I ever get a pro-tour beast, Pete and Brian are doing my ride as well.

Tony,

I just went back and read most of this thread, absolutely awesome story. You have some great great friends around you. Pete has done a tremendous job with the car, its killer. I couldn't find what engine/trans and rear your going with. If you have a chance could you tell us what your plans are for the drivetrain, I thought I saw an intercooler up front in one of the pics.
Looking good!! It shouldn't be long now- Rich

Unless he has changed it, it was a Procharged LT-1 if memory serves correct.

Thanks Rich! Yep, I'm surrounded by good peeps!! Team Karma has a bunch of great people and friends on board....couldn't do it without them - that's for sure!!

Pete and crew have done an amazing job! They have taken a garage build and turned it into a very special and very NICE car!

The drive train is a ProCharged '96 LT1 that I sent to Mike Lewis to work his magic on! Among many things, he installed a billet splayed 4-bolt main kit, forged Scat crank and rods, custom blower pistons from Diamond, custom ground cam and valve train from Comp, all ARP fasteners, ect. Stainless Works 1-7/8" long tube headers and 3" exhaust. A modded Accel DFI intake Jody had done to work on a LT1. Holley C950 EFI. MSD ignition. P1SC ProCharger w/ intercooler. It should make a comfy 600+ hp/tq. Mike sent me back a nicely done short block w/ many boxes of new parts! Then Bob (96z28ss) helped me turn it into what you see in the pics! We have been waiting a long time to fire it up! :unibrow:

Trans is a rebuilt T56 from a '97 Camaro. The driveline is aluminum and the one Jody took out of Malitude when he rebuilt the car...Thanks again Jody!

The rearend is one of Currie's aluminum housed 9" and has Dutchman 31 splined axles and 3.89 gears. Wilwood brakes front and rear.

That's about it! The problem with taking 9 years to build a car is that everything seems outdated now! But I think it's a cool package and will work well! One day WAY down the road I would like to swap out everything for a LS based motor....probably keep the SC though. That won't happen for a very long time if ever!

Thanks for asking, here's a few pics!!

Nice! I don't think I've ever actually seen pictures of the infamous not-an-LS-engine that you've got. It looks pretty, and if it's happily churning out 600+ it should fly down the road.

Hope it makes its way back to your garage soon!

I will look into it! The a/c compressor fitment is a concern with most of the setups I've seen...although the car has a new Speed Tech frame now not the stock frame like I was working with before....might have a little more room?

very nice Tony, looks like a great package. So Im asuming all the engine and trans mock up in the pics was done before the car was shipped to Pete, Did you need to lift the tunnel to fit your t56?

Thanks Rich! Yes I did mock up everything...a few times actually! I had to raise the trans tunnel .75" to fit the T56....however I'm told that was mostly due to the .5" lower body mounts I used. The T56 should just barely fit with stock height body mounts and a stock frame....at least that's what I'm told.

I was going through all my old e-mails the other day and found one from you in there from about four years ago. You were asking me if I was going to paint my 67 the same color as the mule. You said your car was going into paint shortly and you wanted to see how mine turned out.

Ok, I take the little guy to school, come home, logon, and check the site......BAM! Karma's back on page one with tons of pics! Woooohoooo!!!!! :woot:

I truely don't know what to say and that's very rare for me to run out of words....right guys? So here I go!

As many of you know this has been a very long journey for us to get the car to this point....we are knocking on the door of 9 years! This build has had many highs and lows....many times I wanted to through in the towel! But Jennifer would talk me out of it and help me re-focus on my (our) dream and keep moviong on, thanks!

As you can imagine the 'blue car days' were not so fun! I fully trusted that shop/fellow L-g member and even when he failed the first time I trusted he could fix it the second time...which we all know the outcome of that! That was the lowest low of the build! Jen and I were very hurt by all that!

Then, not knowing to me, Curtis went public with 'The Tread' that started us on a much better and happier path! It took off like a wild fire! I could not believe how powerfull a forum like this could be! You guys quickly turned the negative into a positive. With Scott's approval used his paypal account and raised enough money to get the car to Pete and most of what it will take to get it back home! Mario stepped up BIG and sent Pete a very sizable check to help with the needed materials to re-do the car! And Pete jumped in and said 'if I could get him the car comp-spec would make it right'. I had a couple phone calls with Pete to let him know the actualy condition of the car and give him an out....he said to send it to him! So I did! Brother, words can't express how greatfull we are for what you have done! :hail:

Meanwhile, Steve and Nick over at Camaro Performers took interest in the build/story and wanted to addopt the car to do tech articles! I was very excited, you see as a child I dreamed of having a car in a magazine...so yeah this is truely a dream come true! We had to name the car so the public could easily follow the build.....in the end Jen (and I) thought Karma was the winner for all the good hearted people that helped us when we needed it most!

Over that last couple years we have picked up a nice list of sponsors, most were already friends of ours and others have become our friends...all great people! With the help of these companies, the members of Lateral-g.net, and hugely Pete and Crew at Competition Specialties we now have a beautifully done right car! Our dream car will be heading home very soon....I couldn't ask for a better Christmas present!

From the bottom of my heart and with tears of joy running down my face.....

Thank You!!!!!!!!!!!!!: :woot: :lateral:

Talk about a hot thread. One post by Pete this morning, and it's already 4 pages back.

I've been down Pete's shop plenty of times, all the way through this build and was impressed the whole way (as I am with everything he touches anyway). It's great to have a guy with his talent not far from where I live. It's not always easy to find the "good shops", but with Comp Spec it's very easy to just drop my car off for work and then get someone to give me a ride home.

Back in 2006 I met Pete from the forum on Hot Rod's website. It started out as just a bunch of guys from the Northeast, trying to get together to cruise down to FL for the start of Power Tour. By the end of the week, there were definitely some good friendships made, but Pete was by far, one of the best (His friend/co-worker Brian is ok too...LOL!).

Since then I have always considered him a real good friend, as well as someone who is always willing to help out or add advice when needed. To meet someone with his talent and down to earth personality is rare. He is definitely one of those guys, that you have to be careful to not to judge a book by it's cover.

Tony, you definitely got a once in a million lifetime's chance with this whole thing. Congrats on that!

And Pete, without trying to sound like a kiss-ass. All the kudos and spotlight you have gotten from this build..... YOU DESERVE IT ALL my friend!

Thanks Jim! We realize the SS stripe isn't exactly to OE size...but that's the way Carter designed it and we like it! Kinda goes with the whole theme of the build. We paid respect to the origional style of the 68 Camaro...but slightly modded just about everything! You will either love it or hate it!

Very well said TJ!!
I had the pleasure of meeting Pete and Brian because of Karma. Not only did I see a great transformation of Tony's car, but I also became friends with Pete and Brian as well and have been down the shop when Karma was being built. I have also had the pleasure of meeting Tony and his wife Jen in person at one point when they came to see the car in "build mode". They deserve it.

Congrats on being one step farther down the winding road. Car looks awesome man. I always use the blue tape. You just have to buy it with low adhesion. :unibrow: I'm sure you remember me using the painters plastic when I initially built my car. That worked out perfect. Just make sure the paint in clean before laying down the plastic. That or just put the first scratch on it in the garage to get over that perfection feeling. haha

Brent, the late nights have already begun! We built this house 11.5 years ago and I never finished the garage. So now with time running out and the car heading home I find myself out there a lot! The cabinets have all been relocated to what I think will make for a much safer storage space for Karma, I did lose some counter top space...but I will be fine with what’s left! I cut a door into the parts room from the garage so I don't have to access it from outside anymore! Remember it rains here a lot! I finally have all the drywall finished, smooth wall finish (no texture) as that’s what I do for a living. Two of the bays are painted and I'm priming the 3rd this weekend. Hope to have it all painted by next weekend! It’s kinda time consuming as the ceilings are white and the walls are a light canvas color. Then I need to plumb the sink, trim out the new door, and wash the floor one more time....then we are ready for Karma's homecoming!! :woot:

I’ll post before and after pics of the garage when I’m finished…

Actually one of the many excuses I have used is that I didn't want to make it pretty until I was done with the dirty/fab stage of the build! And man did the grinding dust go everywhere! Tape is rated in HOURS of use -- and or whether or not it can be exposed to sun.

Put some standard (tan) masking tape on something - set it in the sun for a couple hours... and then try pulling it off. :(

Green can be left on for a month - and take the sun - but according to 3M - you shouldn't leave it on or expose to the sun (I know this having owned a couple of Grand Banks - and doing LOTS of varnish work!).

Yellow is the 3M pro finishers tape - and can be exposed to UV and leaves no residue behind...

There is a "right" tape for almost every job... but it takes a little research like any of the rest of the parts we use etc. Get it wrong - and you've got a big mess.

awr68
11-20-2010, 03:13 PM
Very true Greg!

At work we always use the 'one week' blue tape...however a couple times I HAD to use the 'one month' blue tape...BIG differance between the two! And the one month stuff was a LOT more money per roll! Less glue = more money...go figure! But there's a tool for every job so you have to pony up!

GregWeld
11-20-2010, 03:25 PM
I'll never forget the guy in my marina that did his whole boat in cheap azz masking tape - the kind you'd use to tape up a box.... and painted and varnished and left the stuff on there for like a month...

It NEVER came off.... it turned hard as a rock - and the glue left staining on his white gel coat when he managed to get about a 1/4" of that stuff off...

What a mess!

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEHHHHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAA!!!

There is a differnce in just the green tape from different manufacturers.
I used 3m green tape its been on stuff for over 6 months and it comes off with now issues. Blue stuff does not want to come of very easily now.

Thanks guys!

We had Carter do a lot of quick renderings to help nail down the color choice (we had a few in mind) and if we needed a stripe or not. Once we finalized the color it was obvious we need the stripe and black tail panel. Even though it's a SBC car the tail panel needed to go black!

I've always liked Tony Rapin's car. It's silver w/ the black D90 stripe. It's a very timeless look and that's what I like/need!

A before shot showing how the cabinets used to be.
http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee259/awr68/Garage/DSCF1490.jpg

After a lot of thought I decided to move the uppers to the other side of the garage, move a couple base cabinets to the storage room/shed that's behind the third stall, and completely reconfigure my work area. Oh and move the sink and cut a door into the storage room where the sink cabinet used to be.
I had to do a ton of mud work on this big wall as I had cut it up quite a few times over the years adding electrical. For the most part I skimmed it after running all the joints and patches. It turned out nice.

The ceiling is finally finished in flat white paint. I put the first coat of wall finish on today...actually just finished that! It will take one more tomorrow. It's a nice canvas color. It's kinda hard to see the differance between the walls and the ceilings...but they are a differant color.

http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee259/awr68/Garage/IMG_2837.jpg

And a couple shots of the close out panels I built on either end of the base cabinets. I still need to build a new bench top. My plan is for it to go over the close out panels and not use a back splash...I just want a nice big area to work on since I gave up quite a bit of counter top in order to make the space more Karma friendly! Also I need to pour and concrete step where I cut the new door in.

Mark, it's not actually outside. I built a 10'x16' room behind the garage that's constructed like a house and uses two walls of the house....think addition. It's fully insulated and sheet rocked. It actually stays warm in the winter and cold in the summer months. Best of all the garage stays quiet....until you pull the trigger on a tool that is!

I just got off the phone with the driver, what a great guy! He will be here Sunday...for sure he says! This has taken a little longer than it would have a couple years ago due to the economy (lack of cars being sold, ect.). It takes a few extra days to fill the trailers with cars as they move around the country. Years ago they would have done a trip like this in a few days, these days they say it could take 10-14 days. There just aren't as many cars needing moved around anymore....it's all understandable.

FWIW, he said that the car is flawless and the color choice is perfect for the car! I'm more than excited! Is it Christmas yet!? :willy:

As cool/fun as a LS motor would be, it's not going to happen. The members here as well as our sponsors have done more than enough! WAY beyond what we ever could have dreamed! And for that we are forever thankful!

At this point I want to get it put together and share it with as many of you as I can! Trust me when I say it was a group effort that saved our car/dream with Pete being the ring leader and that will never be forgotten! :lateral:

With that said, I do agree that a newer LS motor would be sweet and balance the car better in both design and performance...I will head down that path one day....just not any time soon!

I'm in Kentucky right now, heading to Cali then be back home Friday night.
I won't be able to be there Sunday due to a Christmas party. I'll come over Monday after work.

He just said afternoon. I will know more Saturday or most likely Sunday morning when he actually knows how far out he is at that point.
