thanks Dave for the link - those plate coolers are pretty cool and it makes sense putting those in the tank and thanks for the note on SS v. aluminum v. pressure.

5/8" 6061 .035 wall aluminum tube is good to over 1000 psi. Thick walls are not required for aluminum tube for engine cooling. In fact, aluminum is a better choice because it coefficient of heat transfer is much higher than SS.
Power steering with its 1500 psi requirements is a different story... that's where the thick walls are required and steel or stainless is the better choice.

Yeah, but the PS cooler typically runs on the return side anyways, so AL should be fine there, too.

Good point. SS is only required on the high pressure side of the pump, and that's usually hose anyway to allow engine movement.

That is a very nice cooling setup.
In our application, max power/component life was the goal, so we intentionally separated the block cooling from component cooling. We would cool everything independently with the goal of not introducing more heat into the block coolant so we could use way less water pump speed to do the same job..... Free power. One of the advantages (among many), was the tendency to avoid runaway coolant temps. Once the engine got above it's ideal temp there would be a "saturation" problem where everything overheated when we relied on engine coolant for everything.
Obviously we went through some details during the engine build to maximize power with lighter oil. Like I said earlier, the oil temps were designed to stay at 190°, and the coolant temp was 230°(yes,that was intentional).
I am curious about the "cold oil" statements....Have any of you guys had some sort of problem/experience with oil not heating once you adjusted the weight? I had heard guys say it, but had always written it off as "magazine theory", much like the 75% I/E flow theory. I honestly never ran into that condition, and really thought we had carried oil cooling to the most extreme level. Keeping in mind that we used piston squirters, so our oil may have came to temp quicker than some :headscratch:

This is where I was going with it regarding oil cooling but let it go :D I have twin, large, off-road coolers on my race car, both are aluminum, pretty standard "radiators". Haven't had a problem in 6 years of beating the hell out of my car with a dry sump system (I limit my dry sump to 65 psi).

I have an oil over-cooing condition for street duty. Even with a Mocal 202* thermostat the oil does well to get up to the water temp (160*). On cold days the needle usually does not budge off the lowest reading of 140*.

If the carbon is left "nude", do the uv's breakdown the resins over time? Or does clear coating it reflect or absorb them? Curious...mike

mark, ive been paying alot of attention to your builds with the ls9s, im building a 66 nova with a lsa so alot of your info crosses over pretty well. one thing ive been looking to find out is how big of a reservoir you run for the supercharger coolant? i havent found anything on it and i figure you would be the guy to ask. thank you for sharing your wealth of knowledge with us, your builds are amazing to watch!

Yes I did use it on Mayhem and plan to use it on XV. They say you can use it with DSE mounts. Maybe with DSE base LS mounts that has the engine farther forward. With DSE LS7 engine mounts the A/C crashes into the sub frame. So for a few hours work we set the engine back 3/4 of an inch. Give them a call and see which DSE mounts it works with. I need the space so I have my engine back as far as it will go.

On the reservoir I’ve done it a couple ways. One is for a fill point and a air trap. To make your life easier make the fill point the highest point in the engine bay. If you can make it so any trapped air accumulates there. On Mayhem I did a fill/ reservoir/ air water separator. I made a 1 gallon tank that feed the intercooler pump. It was a tall tank that also was the fill point and had space at the top to be a air accumulation point. It worked great. A reservoir (or extra coolant) just adds capacitance to the system. If you have space it helps keep the temps more stable.

I quick note on how I modified the Anvil mirrors. You need to use the internals from a 2nd Gen Camaro mirrors. I don't like the cable operated drivers side mirror so I make my own mount using a stud ball from McMaster Carr and make a few small parts.

That oil temp is surely too cool. This makes a very good point though. You could downsize the oil cooler, at the same time, you aren't adding that thermal load to your cooling system. I would guess that you don't have piston squirters.....
I don't want to take over this thread with a bunch of technical talk, but am very interested in continuing the conversation....I'll start, or find another cooling thread somewhere else later

So you use the stock c6 brake booster and master? How would this work with the z06 brakes without abs? If you could give us some more info on this. So you used the dse bracket but where did you get your measurements and what are all the part numbers and some feedback. what peddles are these and what would you do to eliminate the sensor on the side of the reservoir?

ABS is a separate module so the MC and booster combination would work just fine like it does in a Z06 when ABS isn't activated.

I'm using 2002 Camaro LS1 engine mounts to get better noise and vibration performance. The Urethane one put a ton of noise into the car.

Right now the car is slammed and has 315s on the front and 335s on the rear. Looks like they will work. I'm waiting for the BFG Rivals to see how big they are before I settel in on a tire and wheel. It has 18 X 11 front and 18 X 12.5 rears.
In all of our dyno testing these blower motors are fairly insensitive to back pressure. In fact Mayhem made 877 HP through the stock LS9 exhaust manifolds. These "shorty" headers let me use the 2002 engine mounts and frees up a ton of space and are lighter. Less mass up front.
We will A-B these headers on a dyno test soon at Thomson's, but Katech dynoed them and did not loos much on a N/A engine. I really like them they look like nice parts.

I would imagine having such a gnarly blower on there that the engine would be mostly insensitive to primary length, as you're going to have torque all over the place. The physical gas gas flow shouldn't be affected by mid shorty vs. long tube headers, and the ground clearance is a huge bonus.
Great build Mark!

Awesome attention to detail, as always.
Wow, 315s on the front. I've been thinking about upgrading to the Anvil front clip, more for the front tire even than the weight savings. The DSE suspension is overall a pretty balanced track package for me, but especially in long sweeping turns I think more front grip would be useful.
Do the 18 inch wheels impact your brake choice? I think you mentioned carbon ceramic brakes somewhere on the thread, but I've heard the ZR-1 brakes won't clear an 18" wheel?
Hi Mark,
Why do you need shorties to run the 2002 motor mounts vs aftermarket urethane ones? Shouldn't the urethane mounts just be a direct replacement for the OEM ones?

I think a 305 would be better but it is not avalible from BFG.
You can get an 18 wheel over a Corvette ZR-1 brakes but you need to get the correct wheel.

Hi Mark,
Why do you need shorties to run the 2002 motor mounts vs aftermarket urethane ones? Shouldn't the urethane mounts just be a direct replacement for the OEM ones?
The DSE sub frame uses 1967-9 Camaro style mounts and adaptors to put a LS into their frame. To use the direct mount LS style 2002 engine mounts we had to make new frame mounts. The shorty headers clear all the relocated OEM engine mount. DSE set up is designed to use their headers and engine mounts. Their system works great, but I wanted a differnt set up for more room and better N&V.

Nice video!! That's a nice car for sure :G-Dub:
It's interesting how talks about what the paint weighs, when I did my buds NMCA 10" tire car a few years ago he wanted me to make sure that the primer and paint and clear coat didn't weigh to much :lostmarbles: these speed guys are crazy! Not saying I don't get it because I do, I just hope I never start to think how much can I save if I only put two coats of clear on :confused18:

Thanks Mark, but could you not have run rubber SBC mounts to achieve your NVH goals? My understanding is that SBC mounts are available in many different compounds nowadays, which may have further helped with your NVH tuning.

It appears lower than some of your other Camaros.

Really like the front bodywork, the styling below the headlights is very clean, including the fender to lower cowl junction.
Have you designed a bumper bar behind the carbon yet? Alloy or CM?

Hey Mark, how is the fit with the 315s? I bought a set of Anvil's fenders recently and I'm curious if you're happy with how the wheel and tire sits, or if you needed to add a little more backspace, or trim the inside of the fender lip to get the wheel and tire to turn without issue.
thanks,

The delta between all the steel parts (Hood, Fenders, Inner Fenders, Header, Cowl, Lower Vance with Bumper) was 122 lbs. Some weight will need to be added back to reinforce the grill and bumper. The parts fit better than I though they would. Also then it is all bolted together the stuff feels very stiff.

I have a 18 X 11 mocked up on the front with a PSII 315/30R18. It fits OK but it needs more backspacing than I like to maintain turning radius. I'm concerned with too much tire rubbing. All my previous projects has a lot of tire rubbing and the steel parts just lost their paint. This CF parts will most likely wear away. My plan is to add steering stops and try the 18 X 11 with 7 inch back spacing. The problem is the AutoXs with the 180 degree turns. Also with AutoX like Holley Fest where there is a big bump in a very sharp turn could junk a fender. The steel parts could take a lot of abuse. Unsure on this CF stuff durability. I really like the parts and think I can make it all work.

I was a little concerned about that. I've run 6.5" backspacing before and it was no fun on the street, or a tight autocross. The 6.5" backspacing caused wear against the carbon inner fenders, and was severe enough to distort the weave from heat. Every time I had to make a U turn the wheels would scrape against the control arms. I put rack limiters in, but then ended up with a significantly limited turning radius. I imagine that with 6.25" backspace there is still a fair amount of contact against the inner fenders from time to time. I made a simple modification to roll the inside of the fender lip up on my normal steel fenders and was wondering if modifying the inside lip on the Anvil parts might also be in order. I bought fiberglass ones and I would like to stay away from any major cutting, and glass work, but may resort to pulling the everything out a little more.
I'm sure you will figure out a solution. It seems you always do!

Mark, what offset or backspace are you using with the 11"?
I am in process right now of ordering nearly identical wheels (the GA3s, not the Rs, fit-wise identical designs) for my 66 Nova and am also going to use them on my 2011 Z06 that has ZR1 brakes (Carbon Edition). I could not get an 11"; I am having to stay at 10.5" because the inner barrel of the 11" hits the ZR1 caliper and the 10.5" just squeaks by. For the Vette I need to run a 37.5mm offset (~7-1/4" backspace) so if I were to reduce that by 1/2" I could run an 11", so maybe you are in the 6.5" BS or 25-30mm offset range or less?
If so, keep in mind if you want a more BS for fender clearance you will need to go to the narrower wheel at around 7" of BS. I will be running a 295 tire because the 315 can hit the inner fender stuff on the Z06, you can still run the 315 on a 10.5" wheel since you won't have that issue on the Camaro.

You were my little 'crack dealer'....gave me a little sample and had me hooked.:happy23:

Hi Mark.
First of all, great build as always.
I'm working on a 69 Camaro now that needs some extra space up front.
Is there any chance you could take some dimensions of your front fender so I can see how much more room I will have?

Speaking of Anvil fenders. I tried to send you a pm the other day but your box was full. I did some test fitting and test driving and found a couple things that may be helpful to you before you get to paint. In any case I'm interested on comparing notes between the fiberglass and carbon fiber.

I assume the Too Much Fab canisters are for the fuel tank and rear axle vents. When you say you used them for pass-thru, how did you use them? Did you drill the flanges to run the pass-thru lines for the shock canisters? I sure would love to see a detail photo of how the lines actually pass thru.

I don't know how Mark did it, but we drilled the 2 1/2" hole for the vent can first. then we drill a smaller hole next to it large enough for a grommet that fit the hose snugly. Then file the remaining metal between the two holes to form a "keyhole". Then the order of assembly is shock canister through the big hole in the floor, slide the grommet and hose into the small end of the keyhole, and then install the vent can.
Here is a shot from underneath. The hose looks really close to the exhaust, it is not. The other plus side to doing it this way, is you run the shocks inverted so the rebound adjustment is easily accessible. Especially important with the JRi shocks.

We tried something new for the front A-piler bars. We sunk them into the structure in the hinge piler to get more room for stuff under the dash and to keep them away from my ankels. Now I can have a dead pedal and keep the stock parking brake.

Sorry guys for no updates. I've been very busy with the 2014i Z/28 Camaro and my shop. The car has left Sled Alley and is at the Dutchboys. Matt at Sled Alley did a awesome job on this car. It was there for almost two years getting work done. Matt is a top notch guy and his craftsman ship is great. I really like working with him because he gets it. We only had to rework a couple small things to get them the way I wanted them. For a project this big and complex that is very good. Now the VanNus's have it to paint. Another top flight bunch of guys. Working with this guys make the projects fun and allows me to do my day job and get stuff done.
My goal is to have my new shop done by Feb to line up when the car is back from paint. I will assemble it at my house. I like having the backyard shop.
Attached are a couple shots for the Dutchboy's. I'll try to post more later.

In my experience the parts fit very well, much better than reproduction steel, but the finish is not to my standards as far as looking as nice as paint will. My fenders have fingerprints under the clear coat that you can see in the sun, along with a few specs of debris here and there. Not sure how Mark's parts are. Not trying to throw Anvil under the bus, I will still buy more from them and am planning on it, just not leaving them exposed.

Yes all the time. Ford does some stuff well. Laura just got her 2014 F-150 and we drove it to Torch Lake. Ford changed the steering from 2013 to 2014. There My Touch system really sucks. But her truck tows a 26 foot enclosed well enough. Not as well as my 2500 HD D-Max but if you need to will get it done.
If you compare the 2014 Chevrolet 1/2 ton truck to the Ford 1/2 ton the GM wins hands down. My only issue with the 2014 GM Full Size Truck is the new radio controls are bad. Seems to be a common issue on a lot of new vehicles.

With help from Joe and Paul we mocked up some graphics that was doable. Then I had Murray Pfaff take the concept to a rendering. We are getting close on a final design and color. Mainly we are running out of time so the plan is coming together..

I'm pretty sure carbon isn't as straight as people would like it to be because it is hand laid. Therefore, imperfections exist. Although, due to it being very pricey, many people expect it to be perfect aesthetically.

The CF my son is doing at Enlaes.com is flawless... but it's also not "production" work like these kinds of parts are... and the molds are perfect -- and it's being built more for strength than light weight. SO I think it "depends" on what you're building and the purpose.

If the mold surface is straight then the parts that come off the mold are straight. Not sure what process they use but if its vacuum bagged and put into an autoclave the parts should be real good.

A quick update. We had my new Camaro together as a roller for my car party.
The dry sump placement in the cowl. Check out the headers they are from Ultimate Headers they are shorty and fit great.

The radiator from Dewitt with the SRX fan, oil cooler, transmission cooler and power steering cooler. The core is 24" X 23" so it's fairly big.

I could use a set of those donut spares. Where did you source them?

I have 4 sitting on a pallet here.
You can pic them up cheap they look to be s10 blazer spare tires.
ps you may have to take off the rotors to make them fit.

04-06 GTO spares work too. I got four on ebay but the price has risen considerably since then.

I asked Mark a long time ago about those...they are old C-4/C-5 corvette spares. He said to get them cheap off of eBay.

Yep aluminum C-4 spares. Took me 8 months on Ebay and swap meets but never paid more than $20 each.
They work great and clear DSE spindles.
Maybe if Paul and Joe will read this they will post some pictures.

Camaro update:
Engine Update:
I stopped by Thomson Automotive and they started on my engine. I have a block, well I think it is my block. Looks like all the part are there so It will break up the winter blahs if we can dyno it soon.
http://i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq118/Stielow65/IMG-20140214-002412_zps962ddd02.jpg
Paint Update:
I think the Dutchboys are going to beat my engine done. LOL The car is in the paint both and the PPG paint is there ready to go next week.
Here is a photo Paul sent today of the front sub-frame ready to go into the car. They are on it!
http://i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq118/Stielow65/IMG_91612_zpsf3980e12.jpg
Shop Update:
My general contractor has slipped 6 weeks so that is not done either. The dry wall guy is scheduled for next week. I need the shop done before the car can come home. It sucks not being home to work on it so it will get done soon. The work they have done so far is nice. I added plywood to the lower wall like in my old shop.
http://i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq118/Stielow65/photo1e2_zpsfa2cac3c.jpg
So it is a race between the Paint work, the engine and my shop on which will finish first.
Once I get is all home it will be fun finishing the car.
Z/28 Update:
My other bigger project the 2014 Z/28 is on time and is launching great. Look for a ton of track shoot-outs features coming out soon.
The cars we beat on track in these shoot outs will shock some of you. Stay tuned more to come!

Hey Mark -- I'll call Thomson in the morning and tell them how to spell your name....
And -- it should have MISTER in front of it don't ya think??
Would Charley and I be faster if we had the new Z/28 instead of our clapped out Mustangs?? LOL
It's a rhetorical question....
Congrats Mark! Busy in a great way.

The guys at Thomson Auto are very busy with the shop right now. They painted all the floors and walls. The place looks great now.
If you are ever in Detroit it is worth a trip by to check the place out. It is cool place to just look around at.
You guys would be faster in the Z/28 then the old Mustangs. The Z/28 is a hoot on the track.

Think of the money you're going to save by NOT ordering the 918.... You could have TWO new Z/28's! Because you need a back up car...
