I checked out the local shop that was running Camaros and BMWS in the Contential tire series not to long ago. They had the coolest set up for in car adjustable sway bars. Basically the swaybar arms are square, but more like flatbar stock. They have a system to rotate the arm from the drivers seat so that if they stand the arm up complety vertical its the stiffest, and if it's rotated flat (180 degs) its at its softest. So, the arm not the bar is adjusted for the stiffness, all from the drivers seat!

are you talking about a blade, something like this?
http://ankenyracingenterprises.com/images/May%2009%20swaybar%20002.JPG

I always thought the blade set up was for splined bars. looks like that set up is welded and not splined? Pretty cool, would save time and keep you from having to get on and off the track to make adjustments but not something I want in my cockpit.

With the May Thunderhill event coming up and realizing that driving two hours to Vince's shop to work on my motor wasn't going to happen I drove down to the shop last week and picked up my motor and all the parts and pieces to put her back together.
I mentioned that I would never go back to a timing chain after breaking one at T-Hill last May so I picked up an Xceldyne belt drive. It was the first time for me ever installing a belt drive but the directions were well written and the quality of the parts and pieces were top knotch.
Got the belt drive installed and heads torqued down this weekend.

Yes, that setup pictured is actually for an s2000, but setups like that can be made for any vehicle. HRPWORLD.COM has all the parts to make the blade bars yourself. Or ypu could contact Guy Ankeny or Mike Maier and see what either is willing to do for you. I'll be honest, it wont be cheap. Somewhere north of $1000, but the tuning thats available through a bar like that is priceless...

Thanks Shane. Other than a couple of nicks that I had to file down on the timing cover mounting face where the chain broke through the bottom of the timing cover everything looked fine. No other changes to the motor aside from the belt drive. Thats my story and I'm stickin' to it :unibrow:

How much do they weigh compared to stock? Have you test fit them yet? As you can tell by my by all my questions I have been looking at doing this on my new project any insight would be appreciated.

Track Junky

The fiberglass doors are from VFN and weigh 12 lbs each. I had them on the car and operable years back but took them off when I joined the PT site.(I didn't want anyone claiming unfair)Since there are other cars running them now I decided to throw them back on. The fit is factory perfect. I trimmed the lexan glass mount off the top, made some backing plates from 1/4" aluminum plate and tapped the plates for the oem hinge bolts, and there is a flange up front that slides just behind the front fender if you were to use fiberglass fenders that needs to be trimed off. You also need to cut in your latch.
I haven't weighed my steel oem doors with glass yet but I'd guess they are around 65-75 lbs each?
Once the doors are installed I should weigh in at the low 2800 lb range.

That is the blade set up I'm talking about! I thought it was pretty cool. The driver basically had two "shifter looking" nobs with a detent for the different position for each side of the bar.

C'mon Vince, you know where I'm at. I'm not that educated about the LS motor but I feel an LS build in my budget range would be a great street motor. From what I hear making those things track worthy is not cheap.

Now on the other hand, a nice, fuel efficient LS for the white '69 is not out of the question.

Pretty trying day. I spent ours driving to four different auto parts stores and couldn't find a piston stop. Even though absolute TDC was already determined by the previous engine builder I wanted to verify this on my own. This would also give me some peace of mind when degreeing the cam. Being short on time I decided to go with what I had. I through the balancer on and verified TDC through the balancer and pre adjusted timing tab. Then I proceeded to clean my rocker arms and verify that they were not damaged when the timing chain broke. The first thing I noticed while cleaning the rocker arms was the marring on the underside. A couple severe ones and most of them with moderate marring and a few slightly marred. In addition the roller tip on #5 intake was no longer rolling, the roller shaft on #7 intake was not rolling, and there was some resistance in the rocker shaft for #3 exhaust. Figured it was time to order 3 rocker arms and called it a day.

Here are a few pics of my son degreasing and cleaning my intake and the rocker arms.

Appears to me that you have contact with the retainer.... Not an uncommon issue with the aluminum rocker arms.

Make sure you check the rocker arm to retainer clearance. There should be at least .040” to .050” clearance at the closest point under the rocker arm and the top of the retainer.

Question is if the timing chain breaking had something to do with it......:headscratch:
Another thing is when the builder sent the heads back he sent them back with lash caps. I dont ever remember having lash caps but when I test fit the rocker arm with the lash cap I gained the clearance I needed.

Not sure I consider 6500 high reving Greg. In addition lash caps are used to correct drive train geometry.

The question is, were the push rods spec'd with or without lash caps?

In order to reach a conclusion I imagine would probably have to put together all the variables and do the math.....how much was removed from the deck of the block, piston to deck dimension, valve stem length, spring assembled height, push rod length, gasket thickness, piston to valve clearance, etc, etc..
As soon as I get the other three rocker arms I'll run the drive train through it's motions and do a little more investigating.

I hope you're just going to set the head on the block and use a push rod checker to check for the proper length.... At least that's how I check for proper VALVE TRAIN (I use a different tool for DRIVE trains) geometry. No real math needed using a push rod checker.

OK I see it now. In that pic #1 is at TDC and both valves are closed so to answer your question, yes. I hadn't checked lash yet as I was trying to figure out if I was going to need the lash caps or not.(Seriously do not recall having lash caps when I pulled the heads off)Obviously I do. I'll have to run down this morning and confirm but If I go with a longer pushrod I'm not sure I will be grabbing enough of the rocker stud.

I believe those marks are from clearencing done by the machinist. But I do see one that looks stressed. I think its the one that Greg sees too. Remember this engine was rotated with a few valves stuck down. Could explain this.

Inspect them Geatano and replace or fix the ones that look hammered.

pretty easy to check push rod with white grease and a caliper. if need be buy longer studs

Here is a better view with the spec'd .026 lash. I used a sharpie to black out the top of the lash cap and verify where the roller tip was engaging the lash cap. Looks like it is just behind center.
At this time I'm grabbing about 3/8"-7/16" of the rocker arm bolt.

Got a little motivated and decided to adjust all the valves that I could minus the 3 rocker arms I am replacing that should arrive on Tuesday. I use the quarter crank turn method to adjust valves and decided to put the degree wheel to work for accuracy. Bolted a clothes hanger wire at the water pump boss, installed the degree wheel, and set up the clothes hanger pointer to point to zero. With #1 at TDC I adjusted the intake and exhaust valves with spec'd lash, turned the crank 90*, and then moved on to #8 and so on. The cam I am using has an LS firing order. It has 108 lobe seperation and intake center line is at 104. That means that if I was to line up the dots of the crank and cam gears(setting the cam straight up) I would already be 4* advanced. Advance will give you a little more torque on the bottom end and retarded will shift power to the top end. The beauty of this belt drive set up is that I can adjust up to 4* either way on the fly. Just need to loosen the four bolts on the cam cover and rotate left or right. Degreeing in the cam is best done on a dyno and dialed in for your desired rpm range. I am going to set it up 2* advanced for now per engine builders specs. Once all rockers are installed I'll recheck valve train geometry. Then it will be off to the dyno.

So did you ever get your motor on the dyno ?
Did you have to clearance any of the rockers?

Hi Shane, haven't been updating due to my personal lap top crashing and my only access is the desk top at work.
Joe met me at Vinces Friday night and he told me he wouldn't dyno tune the motor without verifying T.D.C and where the cam was at so we pulled the head off again and Joe and I degreed the cam on Saturday. Dyno rescheduled for May 4th.

I told the company I'm working for that my personal lap top crashed so they shipped me one.

Dave, dyno is in San Mateo. Joe and I were talking about the numbers the engine was originally putting out and he says he can get me more. We are scheduled to dyno next weekend. We will be making some changes next season. Initially it will be camshaft.....the rest will depend on the budget at the time.

Come to find out, Joe made it to the final four in Pinks when they were out at Sonoma Raceway.

I can make May 18th but it would be without my shocks(Two week build time after submitting info) so it would be pointless to go out and try to tune but I was invited out to a Track Masters event the day before so I might just take her out just to see how the engine feels.

I'll get back to tuning suspension in June with NCRC.

If you can make it out on the 17th you should. I'd like to introduce you to these guys. My buddy Bret has a killer car collection and builds Camaro's back to original condition down to every nut and bolt.

Going to Penske 7500 DA's. They are a rebuildable shock with rebound and compression adjustments with a shrader valve for nitrogen that will take from 50 to 250 lbs. Truth is I should go with higher rate springs in the rear but I'm hoping to add spring rate via nitrogen. Not the recommended way to go but we'll see how it works. In addition there is a guy local to me that can do all the valving changes to them for me if needed.

You mean June 17? If so, count me in.

I was talking May. Track Masters always takes the Fridays before the NASA weekend events. My buddy Bret was a miultiple SCCA champ from back in the day and he was going to have me chase him around the track. He's running in the 1:57 lap time range. Although I just talked to Vince last night and with his work load he's not 100% sure we will be ready.

Hang tight fellas. I've got photos, and vids to down load and my 12 hour work days tend to get in the way.

I'll leave you with this for now......we spent 6 hours and dynoed with intake lobe center at 104, 106, and 108 degrees, used three different carbs, two sets of headers, and made 23 pulls.

Not a whole lot of difference between the different set ups to constitute a change and all info still needs to be transfered onto a flash drive that I would like to filter through.

HP and torque came in a little lower on this dyno which was a bit disappointing and mostly on the hp side but as we all know all dynos are different among other variables. The cam was originally installed at 106 intake lobe center and we ended up setting the motor up with the cam straight up at 108. HP came in at 597 at 6300 rpm as opposd to the original 620, and torque came in at 557 at 4700 rpm's as opposed to when it was originally dynoed at 561 at 5000 rpm.

Thanks guys.....photos and vid to follow.

Yup, 23 pulls......seems like lots of thrashing but she seemed to hold up well. Joe's a solid guy and taught me quite a bit.

To be honest, the thing I'm happiest about most is she didn't leak a drop of oil.

Vince finished up the sway bar sliders weeks ago and we were going to drop motor in last weekend but figured it was best to spend Mothers Day with the wives rather than be in the dog house on Monday. On top of that he's buried and there isn't any room in the shop. We decided on Memorial Day weekend to drop the motor in and hopefully wrap up the sway bar deal.

Carrying more speed out of 15 shouldn't and hopefully wont be a problem. Setting up for 1 after trying to sqeeze as much speed as possible going into 1 is a different story and I think my problem. I'm so concerned about getting a high speed off the long straight from 15 to 1 I'm failing to set up properly. Turn 8 is a whole nother animal. After coming out of seven its important to settle the chasis and use all of 8. Per past instruction I have been told to tap brakes to settle chassis in between 7 & 8 before driving through 8 and thats whats throwing me off because the point at which your supposed to tap brakes is a bit of a distance before you hit 8.
Wish me luck guys. I'm already :brix: my pants. Goal lap times this time around will be in the 2:02 range.

My issue with 14/15 on bikes is the seam in the surface (read curb) it was right at what I felt was the ideal apex and I could never find a shallow line that would generate drive out of 15, the deep line over the seam upset the chassis enough that you were wide on exit or feathering throttle trying to keep from going wide. :bang:

Entering 1 on the bike was keep it pinned past the tower and turn in to into the pit lane once past the pit lane wall stab the brakes and turn it in and get on the throttle.

If I'm not mistaken the key to a stable chassis going into 8 starts will nailing 6's apex/exit so you can pin 7 and pray through 8......:D

With the bike a slight lift to trailing throttle going into 8 was enough to maintain confidence. (does that bank look scarier in car than a bike, not sure which would be worse?) That corner is a rush when you get it close to right............so are 9 a & b pinning to toward the horizon, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, etc........what a great track!!

Don't worry G, you'll do fine, get used to the new stuff in the am then focus on having a good time maximizing your lines on the track..........not the infield. :D

Thanks Sieg. Your memory serves you well. I can see how the surface on the outside in between 14 and 15 would make it difficult for a bike.

You also nailed 6,7, & 8. 6 isn't bad, its the transition from 7 and getting through 8 that has me puckering and pray is putting it lightly.

Sounds like we take turn 1 exactly the same only I want to try and lay off of the brake a bit more than I have been.

I honestly feel I'm losing a good 1 second through 1 and a good 1 second through 8. Nailing those two turns should help me achieve my goals. If Vince and I have set up that rear sway bar correctly and I nail my alignment I'm hoping to surpass my initial target lap times goals.

Sieg
06-06-2013, 08:35 AM
One the bike I was only hitting about 135-138 on the front straight (thanks to 14/15), if memory does serve me well the end of the pit wall was the off the throttle marker, I tried to brake and downshift early to get the suspension settled and back on the throttle at turn in and somewhat aggressive on the throttle through the apex. I think the apex speed was "around" 85-95 mph hitting about 110-115 mph before T2

So my braking and throttle applications were slightly earlier than other turns.

T8 was a downshift and trailing throttle setting up for the apex with no brake since the V-twins I was riding have a reasonable amount of engine braking.

Don't know if that helps or is applicable for a car?

I know one thing for sure............I'd love to have four tires on the ground through T3! No trust of that corner whatsoever on a bike, especially with the deteriorating surface on the inside racing line. <Insert chicken sounds here>

Me neither Jer....it's on the list of things to do. I have the new 6AL box that MSD just came out with. It's a plug in deal and comes with extra wiring for longer runs. Eventually I will install it inside the car.

Almost there Gae!! When are we going to see that start up video??

I promise I'll get you guys some vids. Between work, family, and the car things have been real busy. I'll be picking the car up this Saturday. Hoping to get the dyno vid at that time. I'll ask Vince to vid the fire up session before loading it in the trailor. Hell, if he'll let me I'll spin some brodies in the parking lot before she loads. :unibrow:

I found that interesting as well, how did that piece come into existence?

The air box is carbon fiber and came with a lid. It's one of those deals you'd see on a K&N or ARCA series car. I've was using it with the lid but this time around we installed a 2" HVH carb spacer so the hood wouldn't close with the lid. A few modifications later we were able to still use the pan. Now we just need to find or get the box to hood sealer.

Gaetano have been complaining that his rear sway bar is too soft and well the budget wasn't there for a fabricated adjustible type so we came up with a fairly cheap solution and using the existing bar.

I loved the Pozzi bar that was used on Bad PennyŽ so we looked around for different types of bar adjusters. I found an interesting set made for polaris quads. Called them up to see if they had any in SAE sizes. Nothing for a .875 bar. Then I remembered a j-bar mount is very similar...no bueno for anything under 1.750 bar. Poop.

So I drew these up on solidworks and sent a copy to Dennis @ Creations Unlimited. He made a few tweeks. Contured the body so we can go from .625in to a 1.250 in bar with the same program. We made a prototype to try out on Gaetanos car.

I'll see how they do this month. So far so good.

First off I just want to say thanks to Allen and Vince. Vince was squeezing time in betwen other projects to work on her as he had other cars he had to get out of the garage and we worked till about 9:00 p.m. on a few Friday and Saturday nights to gitter dun. It was a great time and I didn't want it to end.
I took her out for a ride today and the rear bar is definitley doing its job now. I'm going to have to adjust where it is currently set up at as I can feel the rear definitely wants to rotate now. Hoping to find an empty lot next week end to get a better idea of where it needs to be.
In addition to the sway bar we made a battery tray behind the passenger seat, placed a battery shut off switch near the passenger side window, made a rear tow hook, and changed the air filter set up.
Hopefully Vince and Allen will post some more pic's of the work and Vid's of a couple little burnouts.

i know we're getting way off topic here but that last pic reminds me of one of my wifes grandparents best friends we use'd to go water skiing with , he did the "combover" and when it got wet it was just one lump of hair coming off his right scalp. Sorry, i laughed out loud when remembering it so i just had to go there....

In an effort to help me obtain my lap time goals I created a spreadsheet to record the cars set up and conditions for each session. I could probably add tires and spring rate details but I dont intend on changing any of that this season. If you guys see something I missed let me know. I can also forward this to anyone who may want to try it out.

Well I kind of feel bad posting this only because I know there are a few people around here waiting for a truck load of big ticket items to be delivered and this is the last piece of the puzzle for me for now but here it is. Hood to air box seal showed up today from McMaster-Carr. I now have a positive seal around the air cleaner. Grand total for a minimum of 10' buy in..........35 bucks. :hapdance:
