Here's some excerpts ...
"Eric (Clapton) is a very, very detail oriented guy when it comes to how the car looks," says Brizio. "But he really doesn't care much about the mechanicals so long as the car runs great."
On the detail front, Clapton spared little expense on the creation of his right-hand-drive 1932 Ford Victoria, which boasts a unique rear end that bows out as compared to standard Victorias which curved in toward the rear wheels. The engine is a Ford 402 that's now capable of 400 horsepower, "or about 100 horsepower more than you need for this sort of car," says Brizio.
Normally a two-door, this version features rear doors in a suicide configuration. Clapton also asked that the top be chopped - though only by one inch - and had two requests that speak squarely toward his other automotive passion: Ferraris.
"He wanted hand-made Borrani wire wheel knock-offs, which are about the most expensive wheels I've ever put on a customer's car," says Brizio, shaking his head. The production of those Italian wheels, famous for having shod all manner of '60s Ferrari coupes, are so labor-intensive that only two have arrived from Italy so far. And Clapton's other Maranello-focused demand? That the Ford's interior be swathed in tan Connolly hides typically reserved for new Prancing Horse cars.
"I asked Eric how I should go about getting the leather, and he just said, 'Don't worry, I'll make a call,'" says Brizio. "Next thing I know, they're at my shop."
This Vicky is coated with a familiar brown metallic hue, in fact, the same brown currently trotting around on a few new Porsche Cayennes and Panameras. "I didn't think it would work, but what do you know, it does," says Brizio, who is not afraid to tell customers what he thinks, sometimes to the point of refusing to work on a car that he feels isn't worth the attention and money someone is about to spend.
Clapton himself seems to have a thing about modern paint schemes on old cars. Not far from the Ford sits his 1950 Chevy Pickup, also right-hand drive, painted in a light green that comes from Aston Martin's current paint roster. "Honestly, when Jeff (Beck) first steered Eric to me, I thought he'd want one car and that'd be it, but that was seven cars and 11 years ago," says Brizio.
It's Beck, however, who has Brizio's ultimate admiration because he works on his own cars. "He does almost everything on them, including welding. Of course, if you think of what his hands are worth, he shouldn't do any of it."
"The good news is that so far the current economic downturn hasn't hit us that hard simply because people who can afford to do these sorts of projects still have what it takes to do so," he says, noting that three-quarters of his build orders come from repeat business. He cites longtime customer and slugger Jackson, who first connected with Brizio in 1979. "Reggie's got lots of cars, and he'll typically go sell five or six at auction but come back home with two or three that he'll then send here," he says.
But Brizio he has real concerns about the future of high-end hot rodding as Baby Boomers continue to age and today's thirty-and fortysomethings show little interest in restoring and preserving cars that made America's automotive name. Jackson is 65. Most of Brizio's customers are retirement age or older. "Today's 50-year-olds mostly can't afford these sorts of projects, while guys younger than that aren't interested in hot rods," he says. "Maybe it'll just mean we're working on fewer cars from the '30s and more from the '60s. But yeah, I'm concerned."

^ Ha! Lookin good Greg... so how long did you sign the storage lease for that car with Roy? 12 month term? :D
HE mentioned that but was apologizing to ME for HIM taking so long! I told him this was the best free storage EVER IN THE HISTORY OF THE UNIVERSE!
I was hoping Charley would have sold the "lightweight" at BJ Auction and he'd have room to store the little red roadster until I get down to get it -- but Roy is still working on her... so, so far, so good.
One of these days I need to get up to "Charley status" and get me some REAL buildings to put this stuff! :willy:

Dave called yesterday -- they're all done with the '32.... and ROY has driven it and given it his stamp of approval.
They had to replace the clutch completely....
They had to re "C" notch the frame over the rear end... and re-position the coil overs so that they "moved full travel and freely"....
"and a few other little things"....
So I'll pick it up on my way down to RTTC and hopefully the weather is good in LA and I can drive it around a bit.

Its not the half shafts. Its the splined yoke that goes into the splined hub that make the wheel turn. 3 burnouts about 10 ft long and it was broke.
Second set that he broke. He will get beefier ones put in.

Greg, you have a beautiful car here. :wow: There are so many cool little details to take in, I wish I had taken more time to look at it.
Hopefully the fix for the half-shafts come quickly and you're able to enjoy it this spring.
Hope to see you down here again sometime soon.
I think when you painted the heads you increased the horsepower beyond what the half shafts were designed to take.

Geez.... I stop to make a pot of coffee and have to spend half an hour responding to posts!!!
Bob is right - its NOT the half-shafts its a problem with the "stub axle" spline shaft. Jeff Kugel is having a custom set made with far heavier diameter and bigger splines. Will take about a month to get from the machine shop.

That's the Weld version of Twittering - or Tweeting - or Being a pimply faced teen on Facey book...
Yeah --- Jeff assures me that they've discovered the fix for this "issue" of these little pieces breaking. Obviously a weak link! The dumb little hot rod can't weigh more than about 1800 or 2000 pounds -- so spinning the tires shouldn't be putting much pressure on "anything"!
I've owned many Corvettes and never ever broke a rear end! And this isn't the rear end - it's just the stub axle or whatever it's called. Not the half shafts. I'd had those made extra beefy already!

Oh - rest assured "we" have had a little heart to heart conversation about this being the second time this has happened -- and that's AFTER they swore up and down that it "had never happened before"....
I'll reserve judgement until I have the new pieces in hand. We're not going to chrome 'em until after I TRY to break 'em.

So far I'm UNIMPRESSED as well. I find it very hard to believe you are the only one this has happened to. A bad part is a bad part. You can not be the only one to buy these, unless the rest are bolted to trailer only show queens! If not I find it even harder to believe they just happened to find the fix for you. Time will tell. Two things ----
#1 -- the AVERAGE '32 Ford owner is about 300 millennia age wise.... and probably hasn't nailed it in a very long time
#2 -- @ 15K for one of these rear ends.... as Bobby B said above... they're bolted to trailer queens.
I am not the only guy having this issue --- which is why Kugel is working to find a fix for it. They've just received from the machine shop the "first" version... to go in a customer car... mine will be #2 -- and Jeff told me that I should then TRY to break it.
GregWeld

Jeff Kugel called today -- and shipped today -- all new hubs (carrier bearing hubs) and 40 spline "axles".... all custom made and of much better materials. We're not going to chrome them -- we're going to TRY to break them first... should they hold up... then we can chrome 'em and the bake 'em to take the brittleness the chroming process adds.
I'll have the roadster at the LA Roadsters Fathers Day show @ Pomona in June.. and then plan a "beach side road trip" north from there... So they better last this time!
You can't beat Kugel Komponents Kustomer service! Jeff has been all over this and has called ME frequently with status updates etc. That's as good as it gets in my book.
Roy Brizio is another one that gets 5 stars... I talked to him more in one day than Steve Frisbee during the entire build.

Glad they are getting it worked out. They will be getting a call from another customer if they haven't already. I was at the Hot Rod and Restoration show a couple weeks ago with some friends. One of the guys that came along is building a Brookville 32 with an all aluminum 427 small block. Guess what rear? I told him of your issues and he turned white as a ghost. I told him not to worry that the issue was being worked on and that he may want to inquire to see if he may have an issue as well. So, we will see. It is not going to be a trailer queen and if I get my way, I am going to test that pretty chrome IRS myself!

Thanks Wayne!
They're getting it handled...I'm not worried about finding a solution. Kugel is a good manufacturer and they're all over the problem. I really don't mind having "issues" -- I'm a big boy... It's "hot rodding". What I want is for the people behind a product (or doing the work) to wear big boy britches and just do what it takes to make stuff good. And Kugel has done that 110%. They've never once said -- well -- it's a show piece and you shouldn't be jumping on it.... That's NEVER been questioned - to the contrary... they've assured me that I SHOULD be able to get after it and never have a problem. That's good people in my book!

So here's the carrier that holds this little POS "stub axle" --- which in turn holds the wheel on the car!

Pretty simple job -- take the tire/wheel off -- undo the half shaft u-joint - and unbolt the bearing assembly.

When you shear it like this -- there is NOTHING holding the wheel to the car except the pressure of the tire holding it in place. Hit a big enough bump and you "could" separate the two pieces and end up doing some major "oh craps".

How in the world did that happen on such a light car? I can't believe you were that unlucky. They've been selling these types of setups for a long time, and as far as I know, there isn't anything about your car in particular that would put that much additional stress on these vs. any other roadster?
Let's hope for better luck with the new ones!

I'm betting it has to do with the fact that the shaft is also load bearing since there isn't an upper control arm. I don't know anyone that has broken a stub axle/spindle on a C2/3/4 vette and they all used the same style.
Hopefully the new beefy axle works.

So after cleaning it all up -- off the exhaust again.... I happened to look up to notice grease all over the floor and turned around to find the Mariana Trench...

Good question Tracy ---
I was just looking on Dutchman's website.... they have a Ford 9" center section IRS but I couldn't find it on the site. Only the center section.
I'll call Phil Gerber Monday AM and make an inquiry about theirs as well.
Obviously this is either a defective unit --- or the "champs" quick change just ain't the right parts for me.
I've email a photo to Jeff Kugel as well... will be interesting to see what he thinks.
GregWeld

Kugel has a Ford 9" IRS --- and that might be better suited to this application.
Would just have to pull the body off -- and mod the chassis for the minor differences.
When I was under the car and doing some cleaning etc -- I also noticed my fully polished Food Grade Stainless Steel exhaust has a few "issues" with cracking welds as well.... so guess that will also be on the complete TWEAK AND RE-DO list.
The exhaust needed some expansion built into it -- and some vibration reduction. Pretty little parts like that are fine for cotton packed show cars -- not so much for something that's actually going to get it's azz kicked on a regular basis.
Maybe I should just get out of the hobby and go to Europe for a few months... come home with a nice Ferrari 458 Spider...

I believe RS uses the Dutchman center section, so structural mounting tips from them would be good.

WTF? IS your case chromed or polished? If chromed (which kinda looks it from the spider cracks I see next to the crack), severely lowered the tensile strength of the case through hydrogen embrittlement. If polished, i really have no clue.....

I'd shove that thing so far up Kugel's ass....... JUNK You haven't driven that car enough to get it washed let alone crack a case or break some axles. The design is dangerous without an upper control arm anyway. Put a straight axle in it and move on with your life.

Mike -- I think the section that cracked is polished aluminum.
BTW -- Hydrogen embrittlement really isn't a problem with chrome plating anymore. It used to be when parts were in the tank for 20 minutes or so - but modern plating techniques have the parts in the tank for a minute or so...
Even then -- baking the parts at 350* will cure that.
Doubtful these parts were treated to any baking after the chrome process... because this is "Show" stuff and none of those pussies ever get on their cars.
Kugel is a good supplier -- and I have every confidence we'll get something worked out. This isn't like dealing with Driverz...
What I'm hacked off about is the car is now a year old - and as Todd pointed out - it's barely been driven.... it's cruising season shortly... and to change out the whole rear end will require body removal - bracket changes - paint work etc.

IRS Housing & Alloy axle package, CV style
Product Description
Building your own Yoke or CV style independent rear end? We now sell individual “IRS” components for those that want to build their own “hybrid” independent rear end using a combination of OEM & Dutchman components. Why not build it as tough as you can using the legendary, durable, and readily available 9" Ford 3rd member gear set and Dutchman's 31 or 35 spline custom alloy stub shafts. Using our new "IRS" CV center, you can eliminate the C5 & C6 Corvette transaxle center section and build a very trick C5-6 "Hybrid" rear end. Whether you are building a Hi-Tech Street Rod, muscle car, road race car, or off road vehicle, construct your next vehicle's rear end using Dutchman custom IRS rear end components.
Features:
We engineered the housing with extra thick cross sections for added strength and poured it out of the superior 206-T7 aluminum alloy, which is 30% stronger than the typical 356-T6 and polishes better too! The stub shafts are machined for the extra large 1350 series U-Joint (yoke-U-Joint style) or heavy duty 934 Porsche CV joint (CV style) and are CNC machined using 4340 Chromoly material. For added strength and durability, the stub axles are supported using a Timken Set 10 taper roller bearing (instead of the typical single row ball bearing our competitors use).
Available options:
-31 or 35 spline stub axles.
-Polished housing.
-934 CV joint, boot, & bolt kits.
-930 smaller CV joints (If space is a problem).
-3rd member gear sets. Strength and ratio-your choice.

Kugel Komponents Kustomer Service at it's finest!!!
I had sent Jeff Kugel a picture of the Mariana's Trench in the case on Sunday -- he calls first thing this morning. He's already spoken with Winters about my issues -- and all I need to do is to drop the ENTIRE reared out of the roadster - send it to Kugel - and they will rebuild and inspect every square inch of it - inside and out.... and ship it back to me. Not once mentioning "abuse" or that I broke it - or that it shouldn't have happened.... just a simple "How do you want to handle it? Want to bring the car to us to have us do the work or..."
On several occasions I've said I will be more than happy to PAY whatever it takes to get this all squared away... and not once has he said - "well... it's going to cost X". Not once. I will -- somehow -- take care of him/them.
THAT IS HOW A COMPANY BUILDS AND MAINTAINS A GREAT REPUTATION.
Winters makes a heavier version than the Champs - but they're not happy with it all polished out.... the casting is porous.... so they're working to make it better but this will take awhile -- so that's not an option.

I agree with Rodger here. What is preventing the chassis on this car from Twisting ?? Nothing that I can see.
If the Chassis twists then the Center Section become the "Chassis-Brace" with the way that it is mounted. If you have a "Live Axle" under the car it would allow some twist vs. the rigid set up you have.
I think you need to take it to an actually Race Car Chassis Shop and have them look at the frame and see if they can find some weak links in it. You may have to put a hidden cage in this little beast to keep it from twisting.
I showed this to my chassis guy and he thought the same thing I did.

It may be from the chassis twisting that caused that center section to break. The bracing and brackets come from kugel with the rear end to weld to the chassis. Kugel should of figured out if its strong enough. They have sold a few of those rears, however no one has probably driven it like Greg. The center section would have to be pretty thin wall material if the grinding, sanding, and polishing made it weaker.

Yep, Chances are the wall thickness of the chassis is pretty thin. Most guys just cruise these cars and then there are guys like Greg well he abuses his cars like they should be.

Just my 2 cents when everyone is giving you spare change.
Upon further consideration, I don't think you have driven the car enough for it to be a chassis flex issue. But with you trying to see what the axle would stand a 2nd time, you might have snapped the housing under the load of that might Small Block Chevy you have in there. The rear axle is really just hanging there and the CV or U-joints will handle any misalignment pretty easy. My guess is that winters might have the same factory in China make their axles and cast their center sections. Currie makes a nice Independent suspension center section.
Or that tame looking small block with painted cylinder heads is really a Nascar Cup engine. And those super all weather tires might be really sticky.

I think you've made a very good point.... because I think we can all agree that it's not a matter of how much power the motor makes ---- it's much more a matter of a complete and utter lack of traction in this lightweight little roadster. It should be able to smoke the tires as long as a guy can stick his foot into it.... and not twist or torque ANYTHING.
Having said that -- the LEVERAGE provided by a very tall tire (31") is a lot... but really? They're friggin' RUN FLATS -- they're not performance anything...
Let's not forget that the case is "wubba" mounted (if you check the photos) so should never see enough twisting action to crack the case like that... and I think if I was twisting it up like a pretzel -- you'd see that much flex showing up in the bodywork.
I think were I'm at is that it's just a pretty show piece and not the kind of rear end that belongs in any car that I own...

Question. What besides the upper attach points is carrying lateral loading? If just those four points, you have nothing taking lateral or even diaginal loads. All those lower links is doing is supporting linear loads from acceleration or braking.

Thanks Skip!
I really do love the little useless POS....
But this rear end has been a nightmare from the get go. First it was SAR overfilling it and taping it for a vent in the wrong place... then Tim was finally able to make the vent work (went to 1/2" tubing) so I didn't have gear lube puking out of it... Then the first set of stub axles... then the second set and now the cracked housing.
Now yesterday when I was under there I noticed that almost every weld seam in the polished SS exhaust has a hairline fracture. So that will have to be a complete re-do now as well.
When I'm at Thunderhill at the end of the month - I'll swing by Brizios and get a plan worked up = and drop it off in October. It will get a completely different rear end and an exhaust system with some V bands - and some flexibility built into it.

It's back in the car as of this afternoon.... I just have the parking brake left to install and she'll be on the road again.
Still amazed at the service Kugel has done on this piece. In all my years of hot rodding - NOBODY has been more proactive or given me better service. Nobody.

Ya know --- as much as I hate to have "issues" with anything --- I really can't say enough about how this has been handled. Just 200% first class. Kugel has called ME -- I've never had to call them... Other than shipping the rear end down to them (and back) they've covered everything. I have offered on multiple times to share or contribute - or to cover in full any costs for upgrades or whatever... and they've steadfastly refused. I finally told Jeff to STOP apologizing! I'm a big boy... and totally get that stuff breaks... I was smokin' the tires etc... NOT ONCE have they said.... well yeah ya probably shouldn't be doing that.... In fact it's been 100% the opposite! He's said "you should be able to do that!"
Anyway -- 'nuff said. I'll be happy to drive it again. The weather is supposed to be nice all week here (rare!) so all is good.

Sorry for the delayed response... 4 days after leaving Pomona -- We've finally reached all the way to Willows, CA! That's about 495 miles north... on my journey home. :D
We left Pomona - and made it all the way to San Luis Obispo the first day (Monday). Backed the cars out - went to see Kyle and Paul Newman at Pauls house/shop... then up to Hearst Castle... and down California Hiway 1.
The next day we moved 2 hours north to Big Sur... backed 'em out and drove to Monterey and Carmel... and back to Big Sur...
The next day we got all the way to Yountville (Napa Valley)... After a too long shop tour and BS session with Roy Brizio... and then got into serious San Francisco afternoon traffic....
Today we made it to Willows, CA around noon - then backed 'em out and drove to Chico - then down to Oroville and then up to Oroville Dam - then out to Thunderhill.
Mike --- I don't think that Stan and Sues car is sectioned. It's the same body I have (Westcott) -- It's a 1994 Great 8 car... all torsion bar suspension and the Northstar engine. Killer car but doesn't ride real well. I want to boogie at 65 or 70 and they want to go 50 and bounce all over. Plus it has 4:86's and they're turning 3600 rpms when I'm turning 2000. After this trip they will make some effort to make it a "driver". They have another car and this is really the first time they spent serious seat time in this one.

Yes we took the main floor tour. It is an amazing place... personally I liked the outside better... the inside is dark and gloomy. What really struck me though - was - since I've just returned from Italy where there are truly amazing 1000 year old structures -- is how fast the exterior of this place is deteriorating! Since much of it is poured concrete or limestone... the building is already losing it's DETAILS... unlike the buildings of early Europe that were carved from marble and granite and have amazing details to this day.

We had to stop by Paul Newman's shop where he and Kyle make the chassis! This is just a bit inland from Big Sur and on our way to the Hearst Castle... and thankfully Kyle had advised us to visit them EARLY in the day and it gets quite a bit hotter in the afternoon! You could feel a 25* temp drop when we crested some hill and hit the coastal air! Man did that feel good!

I rented a house at Post Ranch Inn - Big Sur... because there were 5 of us traveling together (Gwen stayed home) and it was easier than getting 3 rooms on the coast like this. Plus they had special trailer parking for us. It's tough to get 3 rigs somewhere all together!
This was the 'morning scene' -- as we were high on a cliff so we were above the fog! Note the deer in the lower left....
In an hour when the sun came up - that fog lifted and we were in a total white out for a couple hours!

Jim --
I thought of the very same thing after reviewing my pics! I was like WTF! No shop photos! But... the couple things going on there were top secret skunkworks type stuff.
I will tell you this -- after actually seeing one of their tri-five frames -- I was really impressed! The actual rails are HUGE! No wonder they do so well at the races/autocrosses! There can't be ANY flex in the car whatsoever!
Love the HURST Castle! Someone needs to get some Hurst stickers and put them on the signs leading up there (I would never actually condone actions like that but it would be funny as all get out!).

Love the frameless windshield. Any idea who makes it? Need one for a 29'
Sorry - missed this post/question.... The windshield on my buddies Great 8 car is a Volkswagen windshield (I forget which model but not the bug) stuck in there up side down and it's down in the cowl 9"....

Thanks Skip!
I really do love the little useless POS....
But this rear end has been a nightmare from the get go. First it was SAR overfilling it and taping it for a vent in the wrong place...
BTW --- In talking to Jeff Kugel at L A Roadsters show.... I finally figured out that STEVE'S AUTO RESTORATION put the vent on the GEAR SIDE (ring gear) of the housing which - of course - flips the grease all over the f'n place.... and the VENT should have been installed on the back side of the housing, which would be the flat side of the ring gear...
Once again - SAR can build a show car -- but nothing you'd ever be able to actually DRIVE....
This winter I'll pull the housing and put a proper vent in.

Looks good Greg! I try to drive that stretch of HWY 1 from SLO to Monterey once a year. Soo much fun, but rough in some places due to constant construction.
I had the pleasure of meeting Amanda Hearst at a party one time, but that's kind of a long story. :)

Thanks Wayne! Your time is coming! Keep on plugging away.
While I didn't build this one - I've built plenty of 'em and the only way they get done or improved - is to just keep after it. It's taken a lot of effort to get this one to the "enjoyment stage". I've waited for the little elves to come out and finish 'em up - but the little guys must always be busy helping someone else...

My apologies.... it will never happen again.
I go there because they're friends - and we just BS and break some bread (pizza) and enjoy their lunch hour... kick tires on the builds and split. I forget to take pics of the builds.
They're restoring a Pontiac lightweight - "a swiss cheese car" - we spent so much time debating some items on the car - I just forgot pics. I'm the Dumbest guy in the entire UNIVERSE!:faint:

Funny thing my wife I spent 4 weeks in the US last year for SEMA ( for me ), and checked Hurst castle on the way from SF to LV and have to agree with you on the funky lady with the corn thing.. weird, but funny.

Brett! I've got 3,000 miles on her already! And considering I wasn't able to drive it for the first "year" -- I'm doing pretty good!:unibrow:
I would work at Divers just for the views. They're OMG! He's got 25 acres there and it's set up like an old farm with the 'junkers' strategically placed - and the farm tractors etc. Then you go in the buildings and it's a whole 'nother world.

WE wouldn't know because our lateral-g buddy won't let us on the inside with few pictures of the wonderous things happening behind the curtain ... so we just set outside, dejected, abused, and feeling abandoned... watching a concrete girl, some corn and a goat.

What a bunch of whiners.... 'er... oops -- I meant WINNERS.... just like your mommy told you were when you whiffed at the t ball... :willy: :D
So here's the amazing STORY behind this '54 Cheby.... the owner paid a guy a weekly wage to build this car - for 18 YEARS.... Yes you read that right... a weekly wage for 18 YEARS. The car never hit the street... a 'buddy' that is also a car guy talked him into bringing it over to Timmy. Where it was discovered that a crossmember was made out of exhaust tubing - and the quarters had a 1/4" plus of bondo in them... and the doors chipped the paint because the car had no support... and.... well you get the picture. It's now a brand new car and will debut at GoodGuys West Coast Nats in August.
