I have a Canon t2i, not the greatest (especially in low light), but it works. The lens/glass is where the extra boost comes in.
For lenses i have the kit 17-55 lens (mediocre at best), 50mm F/1.8 (quite good, especially for the price around $100), and a 70-200 f/2.8L II (the beast, and one of the highest regarded lens), All Canon. My next upgrade will likely be a 24-70 F/2.8. then after that, a better low light body (Canon 6D or 5D markIII), unless something better comes out between now and then. :)

yeah. He's got a lot of good reviews. I haven't saved up enough $ yet to think about buying the additional lens or body. Much more photography side work to do before I get that much saved. LOL. But buy, I cant wait til I do, it will take me to a much higher level, for sure.
I research the snot out of things before I spend anything. lol

Albert - This Ken Rockwell piece will cost you nothing:
http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/basics.htm
After reviewing that article click on tech from the menu bar for another couple weeks of free reading and increased knowledge.
One nice thing about Ken is he doesn't think you need $10K of camera in your hand to take a good image. At his recommendation I bought my the new EF-S 18-135 STI lens from Canon.....cheap as lenses go and it's tack sharp. Definitely my go to lens.......if it was a straight f2.8 I'd be in heaven.

I've stayed at the Broadmoor a couple times on business conventions. Love the area and the Pikes Peak race. Still pains me that they went all tarmac......but haven't had opportunity to make the race. Thanks to GoPro, helicopter video, and the internet I feel like I've been there! I'll go back to the Broadmoor, it's an all time favorite!

Great shot of the hotel. Were you there after they (about 3 years ago) did a remodel and built a new swanky tower etc? Business is good. I believe the cheapest room is $500.
My first job at the age of 14 was a caddie there lol.
I stopped going to the Hill climb when they started paving it.
It used to be a 4th of July ritual every year to go up there the night before and PAR..TAY! :headspin: When Bobbie Unser, little Al, Or big Al came by it was a real sight!
When I look back at the way I drove down the hill after the race, it's a miracle I'm still around lol.
That image was taken Oct 2010. Construction was in progress. Love the history of the place, accommodations, and service is nice, not over done. Never did get to play the golf courses since our trips were off season, I'd like to as they look decent.......and I've never played above 3500' :unibrow:

Ah yes....the beautiful French lady in the works Audi... She really rocked the world lol. That car was something else. I got a close look at it. That was before the days when everybody and their brother built cars out of carbon

The super cars of Millen, Bobby Jr, etc made a big splash too! How about those in-car vids nowadays ....that's what I'm talking about.

This fawn showed up one day in the back yard and hung out for a couple of weeks. One day the herd came by and he left when a large doe came over. I wonder if it was his mother. He had no fear of humans or other animals. He would eat right out of your hand.

^ the Broadmor is in Colorado Springs. It is absolutely beautiful and a great place to party (take my word for it, they're pretty tolerant, lol). The spa is top 5 in the world according to SPA Magazine and the views/golf is fantastic.

Broadmor is nice. Too nice. I was there a couple years ago now. Luckily, I didn't foot the bill. I felt really weird having valet parking since I come and go often in a hotel. Lovely area in general. Of cool note is the fact that Cheyenne Mountain is right there too. Yes, that Cheyenne Mountain.
Don, you too have a cat named Mouse? I was thinking I was the only one crazy enough to name a cat Mouse. She was tiny when I found her so I felt it fit. She's not so tiny any more, lol.

That got me thinking about my dogs past and present.
Here is Sam at a local lake.
You'll notice he is on a leash. That's because he was a real liability. I found out why pure bred GS were used as police dogs. He would attack anything or anyone that threatened me. Actually he was given to me because he killed 2 neighboring dogs of his original owner.
Truly a one-master animal.
He was only 85 lbs when I got him, and when he passed away suddenly from an enlarged heart at 8, he was 130 lbs. He was fine one night and then in the morning the poor animal couldn't even walk. He passed at the vets a couple of hours later. It was devastating for me.
Thanks for allowing me to post this, it brings back memories.

Back when we used to produce catalogs for sales materials - our pro photographer called that "Painting with light". Why not ask Scott directly?

Hopefully Scott (the real photog) will chime in!
As I recall he set up his camera on a tripod and used a light shielded with a shoebox or similar, set the camera on bulb (shutter open) and painted the car with the light. I've been wanting to experiment with light painting ever since I saw that image and have yet to dedicate the time. I've only done it once with a small penlight and the results were impressive for a first attempt.

Sorry for the delay, I was in Florida all last week working on my sunburn. :D
That shot of my car was my first attempt to mimic (the best I could) a large Chimera overhead light bank (http://www.chimeralighting.com/Products/Overhead-F2-Lightbanks). Of course, I only have a 2 car garage, so I had to get creative. I used a 60 watt light bulb and a lot of patience to get that look. I've shot a lot of cars this way and have gotten a lot better at it, here's a race car that I shot a few weeks ago. I should do my car again now that I've had a lot more practice at it.
I shot for Amsoil Championship Snocross this winter. Here are some randoms with Tucker Hibbert, Levi LaVallee, etc:

With more space, backgrounds, varying f stops, and a collection of light sources it could be fun and deliver some stunning images.
With more space, backgrounds, varying f stops, and a collection of light sources it could be fun and deliver some stunning images.
You only need one light source for this type of shooting. Just work on diffusing the light and controlling the spill.
I shoot anywhere from f/8 to f/11 to get a good depth of field, use a shutter speed that allows me to cover the length of the subject in a time that I'm comfortable with, and use ISO to control the overall exposure. Distance to subject and consistent movement is key.
Of course, if I had a huge auto studio and a 30 ft light bank, I wouldn't have to do all of this craziness. lol
I like to use distortion of a wide angle lens or use goofy angles. Here's a direct overhead shot lit using the same technique. The company that wrapped the body wanted to showcase how the wrap was on the deck as well as the roof, so I used a forklift, shot from a pallet, and mounted the camera with a magic arm and got this:

And just for the for the fun of it, here's another overhead shot of the same car:

And a normal shot of the car:

So many options to experiment with! I did one shot with a laser pointer......that has potential but not necessarily for cars.

Ah....... the old "phone shot". Every time I see a really good / great photo and it's identified as having been shot using a phone ----- it reminds me of Steve Rupp. When asked what was the best camera --- his response --- "the one you have with you".
I laugh every time I think about this. He's right of course!

Yeah Lenie, those are awesome. Need a quick tutorial. Time lapse obviously but lens and settings would be great to know.
Thanks everybody! Lot of time put in teaching myself, always gotta love the approval! Settings/info/etc....
1) Kerry Park - 5 different pictures layered on top of each other, each f/18 and 30 sec exposure... tossed into PS6 with layer style set to 'Lighten' to show the light trail of the plane.... then an abundance of fiddling to get it to what it is. Taken with the 50mm 1.8 on a Canon 60D
2) Dock in Kirkland - Taken with Canon 60D and 10-22mm lens at 10mm, with 185 sec exposure at f/16. Lens had a stacked CP filter, as well as a 0.9 (ND-8) ND filter, since it was still fairly bright out. Editing in CS6 was a slight manual vignetting, USM, curves/levels, and some vibrance enhancemet.
3) Snoqualmie Falls - Taken with Canon 60D and 10-22 at 10mm, various exposures between 5-45 sec and layered on top of each other and manually masked for manual HDR. Some vignetting, curves/levels, USM, etc
Hope that was enough for an idea, without getting TOOOO into it. Feel free to check out the rest of my pics at: https://www.flickr.com/photos/65655107@N08/

Next time you (or any of you guys) are out this way let me know. Happy to recommend some of the great spots. And if you dont have a DD I have a few friend who drive for very reputable car services that are very well connected and can recommend some fantastic not well know places that are quite and private.
A buddy, and occasional visitor to Lat-g and with a 69 Chevelle, is the VP of Ops/Cellar at Mondavi. He has the keys to the magic kingdom. He always seems to show up with little gems like these. Plus he makes his own which in several blind tests has met or exceeded some of the top names out there. www.tortugawines.com

and for any of you hunters out there, another buddy has done extremely well with his brands, Camouflage being one of them. He does custom labeling with big game kills on the back of the bottle. http://www.madorom.com/MadoroM/Custom-Labeling
He also has this running around the west coast circuit with his wine labels on it.

LOL - Thanks.
Those little Hummingbirds are much tougher to shoot than these buggers.

I can hit that squirrel from 100 feet with my .22 --- and doubt I could hit the hummingbird...

Nice pictures of the falls, Greg. I didn't know they lit the falls up like that. Looks nice.
Here's one that turned out really well. I just have a simple point and shoot Cannon Power Shot S90. I just got back from Durango, CO today. I spent the last three days there just out riding around and enjoying the area one last time. I highly recommend everyone go drive the San Juan Skyway at least once. It's totally worth it. I'm just on the north side of Red Mountain Pass in this picture. Red Mountain is behind me.

I have others of scenery if anyone wants some convincing as to the quality of the area.

Nice pic! Good choice, seriously doubt you'll be disappointed with Smuggy. :D
I've found that the best size to display landscape shots is XL and portrait shots is 2XL.
The Pic Monkey photo edit is pretty darn good too! Takes some time to learn it but I use it a lot.

beautiful pictures guys.
Curtis I always loved that picture.
Caught a little of last night's light show. We don't get much lightning around here and this is the second photo I've ever taken, the last was with a film camera. This was hand held braced against a window frame. ISO 100, 18mm focal length, f/3.5, 2 second exposure......I have no idea what the ideal settings range would be for shooting lightning though I'm guessing a higher aperture value is desirable.

So - living in the mountains is proving to be real "interesting". Today was 81* - and in less than 2 hours - it dropped to 58*.... and the black sky boiled with lightening and tremendous rains and huge hail....
A strike hit the side of "Sun Peak" -- which happens to be the base of the area we're building our new house here in. You can see the "wind tunnel" effect thanks to the smoke... and thanks to the torrential rains... it was put out. In another 5 minutes those town homes would have been in real peril! The winds were howling and that's never good for containing fires!!

Sweet!! I had a few of those, fun cars and there's a lot of mods for them
Thanks! This one will stay mostly stock. Being a 2+2, it's a N/A car. It's also an auto. In a couple of years, I think I might have to pick twin turbo/5-speed.
Had a little house guest this morning that allowed a photo op. Not a bad exposure for a phone. I cropped this down quite a bit and the resolution surprised me. The little guy let me pick him up and take him outside without a fight thankfully!

I also think I might have to pick one up for myself (this one is my wife's). I'm thinking a 2+2 with a Twin Turbo swap.

Yes we were, the arena is about 7 minutes from home and we go to as many VB games as our kid schedule allows.
Small world.....Oregon's sports programs have taken it to another level in the last few years. :D
Let your friends know if I can help them out locally in anyway I'd be glad to.
