Can anyone recommend a decent tripod that's stable but not too heavy in the $200 range or so? My brother said "oh just get a Gitzo", but at what they cost not going to happen. Costco has a couple Dolica's that have decent reviews. Any thoughts?
Sieg, I know you created this thread for unedited pics (sorry for posting the ones I did not realizing this). It may not be your thing like it is mine but if you bracketed this shot in say 3 different exposures of -2.0, 0.0, +2.0 and then merged them together with something like Photomatix software it would blow you away. Great shot as it is though and loving this thread
Thanks and don't worry about posting tweaker pics :lmao: Not a problem!
I did bracket that shot and most of my shots but not at that extreme range. Don't know about Photomix.........I'm finding Windows 8 isn't loved by many photo software developers........can't blame them AT ALL, I'm on the brink of switching back to Win7 so I can use my Canon software that came with the camera.
Any examples of a merged composition?

I've heard good things of Manfrotto tripods. They had some at my local costco a few months back for around 120-150 (i forget. as i just drooled on them) heheh.

We USED to use a remote "shutter releaser" that screwed into the "button" to keep from shaking the camera... it was a simple cable and sheath.
Now you need a (relatively) expensive wireless remote...

Poor mans release is the built in self-timer.
The Canon wireless remote is $21, off-brand that looks to be identical $9.99 via Amazon Prime.

If you do anything with Off camera flash, the yongnuo triggers work as remote shutter releases well (as well as off camera flash triggers). And they're cheap.. $30-40.

No you don't, get an ML-L3 for yours. A genuine Nikon one is less than $20 (I think you can afford it :) ) or a cheap aftermarket one for much less.

WOW - Surreal. The ISO bracketing of 100/200/300 created a unique look.

HDR stuff is pretty slick if you got some good contrasting colors to work with (cloudy days are awesome). Looks like you got some stuff to test this weekend! hahah
I use the Yongnuo's, and have been happy with them. I got the older version, where one unit was the receiver and one was a trigger. The newer ones are both a receiver and transmitter in each one. But still, for the price, you cant beat it.

I didn't know! I ASSumed that because it would need to be "electronic" that they'd be expensive (relatively).
I never shoot that way... and only have a monopod (Manfrotto) for use with the long lens -- I want to just stabilize the lens while being able to "follow the action". Monopods work great for that.

I was at the Palm Springs air museum when a B-17 and P-51 were there for a show. They did multiple passes on the deck, the B-17 slow and low (50-75') with the P-51 tight on top of it, then the P-51 did a low high speed fly bye that was flat out awe inspiring. The sound is something else, especially when paired with the beautiful fuselage styling.

Wow, a lot more great shots since the last time I checked!
I tried out a 24-85mm f2.8-4D for the Street Machine Nationals. I liked the focal ranges of it and so I think I would be happy with the 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR (which is the cheaper option), but I am still kind of leaning towards an 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5G. What do you guys think?
Here is one of my favorite shots from the Nationals.

I was in Yellowstone last year at the beginning of September and it was amazing. I recommend everyone go but then again, I'm a science nerd so I like all this geological stuff. I'm headed to the Grand Canyon, Sedona, AZ, and the Hoover Dam this year in a few weeks. I'm stoked about taking the tour of the dam.

I'm no photographer but I thought maybe some of you would like to see places you might not have seen before. I know I like looking at what the world has to offer even if I'll never see it with my own eyes.
Today, I bring you a part of the Oklahoma panhandle believe it or not. Most of the panhandle is flat and, quite frankly, nothing special to look at. This is the Black Mesa Nature preserve though. I hiked to the top of Black Mesa which is OK's highest point at just under 5000 ft.

http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/ad33/gregweld/Heron/file-1.jpg (http://s919.photobucket.com/user/gregweld/media/Heron/file-1.jpg.html)
That looks like a Great BIG Blue Heron!?
It is the largest North American heron and, among all extant herons, it is surpassed only by the Goliath Heron and the White-bellied Heron. It has head-to-tail length of 91–137 cm (36–54 in), a wingspan of 167–201 cm (66–79 in), a height of 115–138 cm (45–54 in), and a weight of 2.1–3.6 kg (4.6–7.9 lb).[4][5][6] Notable features include slaty flight feathers, red-brown thighs, and a paired red-brown and black stripe up the flanks; the neck is rusty-gray, with black and white streaking down the front; the head is paler, with a nearly white face, and a pair of black plumes running from just above the eye to the back of the head. The feathers on the lower neck are long and plume-like; it also has plumes on the lower back at the start of the breeding season. The bill is dull yellowish, becoming orange briefly at the start of the breeding season, and the lower legs gray, also becoming orangey at the start of the breeding season. Immature birds are duller in color, with a dull blackish-gray crown, and the flank pattern only weakly defined; they have no plumes, and the bill is dull gray-yellow.[3][7][8] Among standard measurements, the wing chord is 43–49.2 cm (17–19.4 in), the tail is 15.2–19.5 cm (6.0–7.7 in), the culmen is 12.3–15.2 cm (4.8–6.0 in) and the tarsus is 15.7–21 cm (6.2–8.3 in).[9][10]
The heron stride is around 22 cm (9 in), almost in a straight line. Two of the three front toes are generally closer together. In a track the front toes as well as the back often show the small talons.[11]
The subspecies differ only slightly in size and plumage tone, with the exception of subspecies occidentalis, which as well as normal colored birds, also has a distinct white morph, known as the Great White Heron (not to be confused with the Great Egret, for which "Great White Heron" was once a common name). It is found only in south Florida and some parts of the Caribbean. The Great White Heron differs from other Great Blues in bill morphology, head plume length, and in having a total lack of pigment in its plumage. This is mainly found near salt water, and was long thought to be a separate species. Birds intermediate between the normal morph and the white morph are known as Würdemann's Heron; these birds resemble a "normal" Great Blue with a white head.
The theory that Great White Heron may be a separate species (A. occidentalis) from Great Blue Heron has again been given some support by David Sibley.[12]
Voice[edit source | editbeta]
The call is a harsh croak. The heron is most vocal during the breeding season, but will call occasionally at any time of the year in territorial disputes or if disturbed.

Well........there are these seemingly little known websites called Google and Wikipedia that can really make a person look smart in short order.
Though the family ranch in Echo, OR has one of the larger Heron Rookeries in the state so I've done a little research prior to GW's exposure of the prehistoric beauties. They are exceptional to watch stalkers of prey around rivers, lakes, and ponds in our region.

Yes it is an American Kestrel. He's been around the orchard for a few years. Very cool bird, he'll taunt the dogs occasionally, my neighbor said he's been perched on the gable of our house a few times in the last week.

Likely. Harvest is in full swing. Mainly the whites though and pinot.
Last night was the Harvest moon (full moon in Sept). Was amazing this morning. They have crews working all night picking.
A lot of the cab and zin grapes won't be ready to pick for a few weeks. All depends on the weather. If harvest is wrapping up then crush will be in full swing which means many crush parties at the wineries. Great time of year here in the valley.
You coming to town?

Will be in Willows at Thunderhill October 11/14 -- so will be close. If Gwen was with me I'd shoot over for a drive thru the valley. But since I don't drink and she'll be in Prague or somewhere like that.. I probably won't. I'll have the "rig". But we'll leave it open cause it might be worth the trip "just because".

Looks to me they used a tripod and a looong exposure at the very edge of dusk to capture that. I'm guessing the long exposure by the fact you can see some of the stars in the upper left corner, and what looks to be a road in the middle/right of the picture has "red lights".. ie.. someone(s) tail lights going through the shot during the shutter being open.
But, even knowing that, that's going to be a tough shot, just at the right time of day and year to get those colors.

That's beautiful.
Hopefully a real pro chimes in.........
I'm guessing it's a tripod and second plus exposure time. Not sure what the aperture setting would be, f8 or higher?
When all else fails, shoot it underexposed and enhance it with software. :D

I can smell it from here Jeff!!
Nice pics!
I should tell you a funny story...
Gwen and I were at Thunderhill... and I said - hey, lets go over to the wine country. Done. I ask my buddies how to get there... "OH, just go down to hiway such and such (20) and head west til you see the lake". Easy. Stop at Granella's etc... and off we go... I drive and see a nice lake and then I drive and drive -- thru all these little tiny towns -- along the edge of a beautiful lake -- and 5 or more hours later end up with a sign I finally recognize -- Santa Rosa or Petaluma or something. Turns out we'd missed the part about TURN WHEN YOU SEE THE LAKE and pretty much circumnavigated Clear Lake - all the way on 20 to 29 and then back down.
We didn't care - but I was hauling the trailer and dude! Some of those turns are getting pretty narrow!!!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

1st time novice D-SLR user.
My dad passed away in 2009. He was into this and has a Canon 450D SLR with 3 lenses larges being a 80-400
I have no idea what I am doing and finally decided to get it out and start to learn.
Like always I started without reading the manual.
I put the biggest lens on and walked out in the front yard this morning and snapped the photo below.
It was really really dark, so had to enhance brightness using the PC. Still figuring out shutter speed, aperture etc
Anyway reasonably happy with 1st attempt....

Beautiful spring day here in Oz, was sitting in my study that overlooks our pond.
This little guy ventured out to catch some rays.
They are called a blue tongue lizard as their tongue is bright blue. I'm not quick enough to get a shot with his tongue out (haven't toyed with continuous shooting yet).
They grow to about half a foot long and are pretty slow and lumbering. Harmless although this may explain why 3 weeks ago we had small goldfish in the pond and now we don't !!

Just to show the capabilities of my little point and shoot...
We handed the camera off to a stranger to take this picture of our group on the trail in the park between Fort Mason and Fisherman's wharf, with Alcatraz in the background.

I then turned around and took this picture of Alcatraz from the same spot freehand...

Had one of those, lowered, inter-cooled, and the boost bumped. Great car......except the motor ran circles around the brakes. :confused59:

We went out Saturday to "Explore" (aka. find some places to take some pics of the kids, but thats no fun for the kids. So we call it "exploring". lol). We ended up in Knights Ferry, CA. Quite a beautiful little place. While we took some great shots of the kiddos, I wont bore you with those. But I also snagged these couple shots as we were walking around... Enjoy. :)
Trying to figure out which of these I want to make some good sized prints of and hang near the PC to give me a place to stare into and relax.
