This one was interesting to me. Exp. 1/25, f/3.5, ISO 5000, Canon IS 18-55 lens @ corrected 28mm, lighting was natural indirect filtered through a mini-blind. I've never seen the yellow color emerge from that paint in the 23 years I've had it.

What's the fps rate of the new rig Sieg?? <I rhymed!!>
8 fps using SanDisk 32GB Extreme Pro compact flash card ($136!), shutter 1/8000, ISO 6400 (12800 enhanced) 19 point focusing.
The camera's ability to capture sharp images in low light, hand-held, with no flash continues to amaze me. I've never had a camera perform close to this. The image stabilization obvious works as 1/25th hand-held is a no-brainer.

Thanks Dave,
It's a Canon EOS 7D, using a "cheap" Rebel 18-55mm IS "kit" lens. This lens does actually rate pretty high with Ken Rockwell and a few other reviewers. It's only a $200 lens and the viable competitors are $500-$1200. Once in awhile I get lucky!

I went down to the "shed" to get something -- normally the flourescent lights are on 24/7 -- but with the warm weather we're having - I turned them off yesterday. I was surprised by the cool "scene" when I walked in... I liked the colors coming off the floor etc... so ran back to the house and grabbed the real camera. I should have used my mono-pod but it's out in the rig.
I wasn't trying to be artistic or get a particularly killer shot -- I just snapped a couple pics to see if I could capture the feeling.

The nicer camera's allow that, with image stabilization the 1/5 handheld setting you used produces a "decent" shot. Technology is our friend. :D

My Canon 7D came with a 28-135 IS USM, we had a 18-55 IS that came with the wife's Rebel XTi that I've been using 90% of the time. That 18-55 is "cheap" but reviews well and produces great images, the only downside is the f3.5, if it was f2.8 I wouldn't want another lens.
The advantage Greg and I have over your Rebel is the light metering in our camera's is a little more sophisticated. Shoot on P mode and use the exposure meter in the viewfinder. Shoot multiple shots of the same subject over and under exposing them at 1/2 stop increments and see what the camera's metering system produces.
It appears my camera's meter may tend to slightly overexpose which I can adjust. The type of metering (center-weighted, evaluative, spot, averaged) you choose also impacts the exposure.

The Canon L series are top-end professional lenses. Even with a middle of the road camera you should get very good images with that glass. If she has the camera body to match the lens you should make sure it's insured. :D

While in the military I had the experience of spending quite a lot of time in the amazon... I've had my fill of snake and spiders and yes, I don't care for either nor do I care for "the rain forest"... F**k that, it's a JUNGLE!!!!
I did lean up against a tree once... One of those trees that looks like all roots going up... after 10 minutes or so it moved... It was actually a snake body intertwined with the tree I was leaning on... about 15 - 20' long... I unloaded 2 magazines of 9mm as I ran through the jungle, throwing off equipment as I went... So, I can't look at an earthworm today without flashbacks...
Did I mention the foot-long spiders they have down there???
:disgusted:
I did reference western US......aggressive snakes in southern US, Australia, the jungle environment, etc. are shoot to kill in my book. I've played in a 4 day golf event at Reynolds Plantation south of Atlanta (3 courses with water everywhere) three times and the number, size, and aggressiveness of the Copperheads on nearly every hole there is alarming........you don't encroach their environment and maintain a minimum 10' rule if you're quick.
Sorry if I came across as insensitive and thank you for your service.

Thanks, good solid information. I'd debate his issue a little with people asking camera settings as that's how you learn what settings will deliver desired exposures for the shot setting. Every situation is unique, but for those trying to establish a baseline database it is helpful.
I liked the fact the featured camera is the one I just bought. :D

Nope, they're very well behaved when they don't have a pulse.
He made the mistake of popping his head up to see what was happening in a pivot where we'd been shooting sage rats for over an hour.......DOH!

I just bought a Tamron 10-24 for my Nikon... I wanted to buy the Nikkor version but the Tamron actually has less distortion around the edges..and was half the price... go figure.
http://www.tamron.com/en/photolens/di_II_wide/b001.html
If you've never used it --- try reading about lens on www.KenRockwell.com he has great info and reviews.
Had to add that Ken hates this lens --- but for the kind of photography I do -- it works just fine. For a pro like him - it probably sucks... it just wasn't worth paying almost double for the Nikkor when I couldn't tell the difference.

We have a newer Tamron 18-200mm on the wife's Rebel and a Tamron 28-300mm.......no image quality complaints other than the f3.5.
Ken's lens reviews are somewhat out of date IMO, so I've also been referencing B&H's customer reviews, Digital Photography Review, Digital Camera Review.
FWIW - I'm down to these two lenses:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/425812-USA/Canon_1242B002AA_EF_S_17_55mm_f_2_8_IS.html
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/652136-USA/Tamron_AFB005C700_SP_AF_17_50mm_f_2_8.html
Somewhat concerned on the reviews of the VC (vibration control/image stabilization) of this lens as it appears to cause focusing issues resulting in soft images which doesn't appear to be an issue with the non-VR lens.
Just when you think you've found a deal, a serious for me shortcoming pops up. :bang:
The Canon lens appears to shine in autofocus performance.

Just like the TIG, patience and experimentation. You've got the camera now just learn how to set it for the job you want it to do! Just remember, if you don't have decent lighting you won't get decent photo's no matter what you do.
All those photo's were shot in gusty wind conditions so shutter speed was in the 400 range. I typically shoot multiple photo's and vary the exposure in 1/3 stops sometimes 0 to -1.33 to insure I capture a proper exposure. When in doubt slightly under-exposed is better than slightly over, editing software can correct under-exposed easier than over.
Shutter speed controls movement
Aperture controls light gathering and depth of field
Other fine tuning options:
Light meter settings
Focus point settings
Frame the images larger than you want when shooting and crop them in editing software for the best compositions.
Good lenses make all the difference! I was comparing lenses when I shot those pics.
A few minutes ago I just bought a used Canon EF-S 10-22mm F/3.5-4.5 USM on eBay...........wish me luck! With my APS-C (small sensor camera) this lens appears to be the ticket for shooting cars, landscapes, sunsets, parties, etc.
It's supposed to be sharper than any lens I currently own so we shall see........

I know what you mean. Only way you can take video is with "Liveview"? You probably knew that, did you know the autofocus in Liveview is MORE accurate than it is in Viewfinder mode, although slower? It also is supposed to, according to Nikon, be able to track up to 35 faces at once while filming if it is set to "Face Priority" focus mode. If you can figure out how to make the autofocus work it should take some pretty nice videos. My very limited experience with it is that it keeps changing what it's focused on. Need more practice!

Thanks - I dropped my daughter off at basketball camp and snuck in and took a few shots. I'm really liking my new 10-22mm lens.
I spent a couple hours reading the manual and tinkering yesterday.........things like custom functions for micro focusing adjustment of individual lenses. It's almost unbelievable how complex these new DSLR's are.
I had a weak moment earlier in the day and ordered this to complete my lens collection: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/853533-REG/Sigma_692_101_50_150mm_f_2_8_EX_DC.html.
That F2.8 lens should be awesome for my daughters sporting events and a LOT more.

To me, its not the backround that captures, its the foreground and the way the light is coming through the thin cloud cover. Looks great and different....

In my manual reading I found when shooting in mode monochrome (B&W) that you can set the camera to apply yellow orange red & green filter and sepia blue purple and green toning effects to the images.........that opens up all kinds of creative avenues.

I knew you'd like the 10-22 lens -- I love the 10-24 I'd just bought. It just captures so much more... It gives a great perspective in a close up - and just captures so much more on those "big" shots.

I have to say --- I use the long lens VERY VERY little. Even at some sporting events it's almost too much lens. When you need it you gotta have it! But actual hours spent connected to the camera -- not much.

With my cropped sensor it definitely helps, your large sensor with the 10-24 must be really good.

I just wished I hadn't taken the salespersons suggestion to get the Tamron lens over the Nikkor. It might be "fine" optically -- but it FEELS like a cheap lens to me. Once you've run a Nikkor or other quality lens - it's hard to go backwards. I might go up today and get the Nikkor.

Regarding "other brands and using them on your NIKON"
Here's what KEN ROCKWELL says about buying "off brand" or as he comes right out and says... CHEAP LENS.... LOL so politically incorrect!!
You're always on your own with off-brand lenses like Sigma. Readers tell me that their Sigma 105 Macros don't work on the D7000. Potential incompatibility with future cameras is one of the steep prices one pays for trying to save a few dollars yesterday on a cheap lens. Nikon shares nothing with its competitors about lens compatibility, so if you want to buy a Tamron or Sigma, you're gambling that it will work with tomorrow's camera. Good luck.

I'm thinking that SIEG has learned to FART before he snaps a shot... it helps!!!

It definitely will not be my go to lens, the Canon 18-135 f/3.5-5.6 STM should end up being the go to.
Ken Rockwell says:
This is my favorite all-around zoom for 1.6x Canon cameras. It covers all the focal lengths I need, and it zooms and focuses like a dream.
With manual-focus override and smooth zooming, it handles better than most Canon lenses.
I'd buy one of these in an instant if I was shooting a 1.6x Canon camera, like the 7D or T4i or whatever.
http://www.kenrockwell.com/canon/lenses/18-135mm-stm.htm
The Sigma f2.8 50-150 is the best option in class for 1.6x Canon cameras and will hopefully be the go to for indoor basketball and volleyball games which I will be spending a lot of time at over the next few years with my 11 year old daughter. Capturing this period of her life somewhat justifies the investment. I can also see it being very good for motorsports action, the f2.8 aperture will let me use the 8 fps speed of my 7D. Who knows, I might even take a couple pics of the mutts with it too. :sieg:

Completely understand this liability. I have a couple Tamron's that work well on my camera. Never have been very impressed with Sigma, but this based on hundreds of very positive reviews I've read from multiple sources this NEW 50-150 may be an exception. Though one retaliatory firmware upgrade by Canon could make it worthless. Sadly Canon doesn't have a decent class option for their 1.6x camera's, the zoom range on the L series f2.8 70-200 on a 1.6x camera misses the mark..........and it's twice the $$$.

I'm positive that these companies make good lens -- and at FAR less cost (the 10-24 I bought was about half!)... and for our uses are better than we are!
Really -- I also believe that the amount of hours and actual pics the average person takes -- you'd never wear them out - and you'd never really "get your money's worth" --- except that you'd have the pictures/memories. Thus I bought the TAMRON over the Nikkor lens.
I just don't like the way the lens FEELS and then start to kick myself for buying it. If I was working and spending hard earned money -- then A) - I wouldn't probably own a Nikon in the first place... and B) would buy all my lens USED rather than new.
I bought the 70-200 f2.8 telephoto lens for the express reason of going to the Monaco Grand Prix... and wanted the speed and the telephoto. My kids are grown so I'm long past the sports events.. and that's where these length lens really shine! I can guarantee you that if I had the Sigma vs the Nikkor - you'd never be able to see the difference...

I think she took 2000 pictures on that trip. The one's she took from her hotel room window in Turkey are just incredible. I will try to find those as well.

I think this was the Swarovski Crystal Chandelier with 24k Gold. At the time they were the worlds most expensive ever made. Something over 2 million each.

Those are some great Pics!! only 2000 pictures? Hell, i'd be taking that a DAY. LOL
As far as the lens debate.. I'm kinda on the fence of "buy it right the first time".. Thus, I "went big" and got the Canon L F/2.8 70-200 (II series) as my first big lens purchase. They hold their value real well, I could sell it for almost what I paid for it. Its great with the speed and the low fstop. I havent been doing much photography as of late, after moving and dads health issues, but hope i can get back into it. Doing my cousins family tonight tho. But doubt i'll use the 70-200. More likely the 50mm. I DO want to get my hands on a good wide angle 10-35 or somewhere in that range. And get my hands on a new full frame pro body (6D?). Aw.. the wishes. lol
Curious to see how the new sigma f/1.8 18-35mm lens turns out, for $799, thats a pretty good buy if its clear.
Edit: also. If you arent sure of a lens (and if your gonna throw down some money on one), I'd highly recommend checking out borrowlenses.com. Rent the lens for a weeked to make sure your happy with it. Pretty inexpensive.

Were lucky as there is a local Camera place that let's you rent the lens 3x and if you buy it they put 80% (or something close) towards the purchase of the lens.

Sieg, I know you created this thread for unedited pics (sorry for posting the ones I did not realizing this). It may not be your thing like it is mine but if you bracketed this shot in say 3 different exposures of -2.0, 0.0, +2.0 and then merged them together with something like Photomatix software it would blow you away. Great shot as it is though and loving this thread
