Hey Brian, quick question, what size bolts and rod ends did you guys use for the 3 link? And I am assuming regular Grade 8 bolts?
Thanks,

I have had the Kirkey Road Race seat in the Corvette for years and I love it. Once you are in, it fits me like a glove. The sides are high, so it can be tricky getting in with the steering wheel in the way. I have an identical seat going in the passenger side.

The first official autocross will be this weekend at the American Autocross Series in Marina. I will not be running the Goodguys on June 4 - 5 with the Camaro. I do plan on taking the Camaro to the Goodguys show in August, but there is not an autocross there. Show only for that one. It will be a 1970 Camaro for that weekend.

I know it is not the most practical car in the world, but it will be legal....enough. Headlights, brake lights, side markers, turn signals, windshield wipers, horn. I will have some different wheels and tires for the street later. I am still in the works with that.

It is not a pearl paint. It is a custom PPG Orange with no metallic in it. The color changes a lot, depending on the light source. It is a fairly transparent color. We start with a white base and three coats of orange base and then three coats of clear. I think you get eye damage if you look at it too long.

Thank you all for the kind words on my Camaro. It has turned out better than I could have wished. Today was the first day I was able to really drive the car. I had a blast. The car is much closer to being dialed in than I thought. Mike Maier did a great job on initial setup. I have a few items to correct, but my list is small at this point. I would call it a very successful first drive of the car.
Here is a video my buddy shot with my flip camera. I hope to get some better video later. Ignore the damn cone I hit in the beginning.

I won't make it this year, but next year I should be there. Between your event and So Cals Divisional at El Toro, I will be very busy next year. I have some sorting out to do, but nothing major. It was a very successfull first outing with a brand new car. I actually beat Frank yesterday, but Mike got me by .7 seconds. To be that close was a great feeling. I have power steering and brake issues to resolve. Once that is done, I will be really ready to go. The video I posted was the very first time I had ever driven the car. That was holding back a bit.

I had a great weekend with the Camaro. A handfull of small but nice additions to the car and my Daughter got her first rides in the car. I will post the additions soon. I also have new wheels and tires coming that I am very excited about. They will be legal for the 200 and higher tread wear events.
My Dad and I strapped in my 13 year old Daughter and she got 5 straight runs in the car. She will drive this car once she is 16. She can't wait!

I know I won't be going as far as you did, but I really love the look, especially the rear quarter flares for fat tires. I figure with a 1-1.5" wider quarter, I can fit 315/35R17 tires with no problem on a 17x11 wheel with 5.5" backspacing.
Is that all factory metal that was just pounded out to form the flare?

Yes, the quarter panels are all pounded and stretched original sheet metal. If you look at them close, they do not go out much. Just a couple inches. Because the car is so low, most of the flare is room to go up.

This weekend will be a big deal as it will be the first autocross on real "street" tires. The rears are larger that what you have already seen. The fronts are taller but just a bit narrower. I have 315/35R17 on 17X10 and have no problems with them fitting inside the stock wheel wells.
Really? That's great. I have a 325/50R15 tire on a 15x10 (5.626" BS) rim that I test fit on the car. It was just touching the leaf on the inside and just barely made it on the outside. I don't think I would have wanted to drive it as it probably would have cut the tire. Now I know the the tire's section width is about 11/16" wider and the tire is 2" taller, so that may account for it. But I do want to drop the car about 2" also.
I'm trying to get a junk one now to use for fitment. I have a junk 17x9 wheel with 4.5" BS. That should be close enough so I can get exactly what I need.
But I must say that I still do like the slight flaring of the wheel well. Don't know that I need to go to the extreme that Brian did. As for the front, I'd like to put a 255-275 up there. I'd ditch the inner fender wells, but I'm not sure if they'd fit without some mods to the fender.
I have been looking at cars as I've been driving around and have seen a number of them that actually have pretty good sized flares from the factory. In particular, a 2000-2005 Grand Am's front fender. I'm thinking perhaps I could just "cut and paste" the flare part onto my stock fenders/quarters. But I'm not sure if that would be easier or harder than just massaging the factory steel out. I'm going to pick one up off Craigslist (about $25) and see what I can do and how it would look.

Congrats on the Optima deal. We all knew you'd be there one way or another.
I went with the 19/20 combo to get the biggest tire I could. Researching which size took way too long for me as the tire manufacturers do not make the large combo I wanted. One may make the front I want but not the rear or the other way around. There are lots of 335/30/18's that would fit my front, but they are too short for my rear. The 200 treadwear rule is the main problem. If they were 180 my decision would have been much easier. I am putting my faith in Michelin and the new Pilot Super Sports. 345-30-20 rears and 305-30-19 fronts. The rear tread is just under 13" and the fronts are over 12".

These are not CAN gauges. I was going to use the Livorsi CAN gauges but decided to go with Speed Hut. The M90 has both ways to hook up gauges. It came down to looks over ease. It has been a great weekend with my Camaro. After 3 1/2 years, I have finally completed my build and I am getting to enjoy the car for all it was built for. On Friday night, I got my special made DPE wheels with Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires. Now I can drive it all over the place on the street and autocross the car when ever I want. It took a while to decide on the wheels and tires. Because of the detail I spent on the car making it a dual purpose car, the build took a long time. If I wanted an autocross or track day car only, it would have done a long time ago. Getting the fine detail in the body lines, straightness of the panels, lighting, wipers, and other electrical took a good year and a half to two years extra.
So, with all that hard work, I finally got to drive the car all over this weekend. Saturday night, I drove it all over town. I ran into a few people I know and they stopped me to check out the car. They new I had been buildling the car but they saw if for the first time and were blown away. When I went to the gas station, a bunch of people came over and were amazed at the car. It felt so good to have the great reaction to the car after all that work. Not only do I get to appreciate the car, but others out of the blue also. I know I am not alone with this. There are so many cool cars on this forum and others that get the same reaction. I could not have built this car without a lot of great people. Mary Pozzi started it by giving me a great deal on the car. Maier Racing for their hard work getting the suspension and cage work. My body shop, Car West Elite, put in 1000 + hours into the body and paint. My buddy Rob spent many hours on the electrical doing an incredible detailed job. His many years of experience and professionalism shows getting my car street ready. My Dad has done so much and continues to be a huge part of the success of this car. There is no way this car would have been built if was not for him. I knew he could do a great job, but he far exceded what I could have dreamed he has done with this car. I am very lucky to have such an incredible Dad. It makes all that hard work and money worth it.
My daughter, future driver/owner, took a few photos and video of me over the weekend as I got the cruise the car around. I even took it to the store today after I autocrossed it in the morning!
Here are some of the photos and a short video my daughter shot.

My daughter thought is was funny that I took the car to the store to pick up a few things. She said it was the fastest grocery getter on the road.

Brian, I have to ditto all of the sentiments in this thread. Every detail about your car is stunning; from the mechanics to the fit and finish. This is absolutetly my favorite 2nd gen, hands down:bow: . Being able to see it and race with it in Fontana was great, and it was awesome to see another father/son team out there. I meant to come over and chat with you guys during the event, but being in line soon after you I always forgot to after my run...
I hope to see you guys at some more events; do you know about the trackday at Buttonwillow in September? http://www.lateral-g.net/forums/showthread.php4?t=32486

Thanks for the compliment. The father / son thing is fun.
I have seen that a bunch of you guys are going there for some track time. It looks like a lot of fun and it is on my radar. I may be there.

After a great day at the Pleasanton Goodguys show, we autocrossed at the local SCCA event and finished off the weekend on the high note. My 13 daughter (future driver/owner) went for a handfull of rides with me and my Dad. The car is really getting dialed in. We made some adjustments to the JRI shocks and it is really close now.

Wow - can't believe this is the first time I saw this one either.
Love it. Your car is very similar in build style to mine. Its too bad you have competitive secrets it would be fascinating to discuss suspension setup.
Do you know how(or care to share) much your uprights weigh (no hubs) ?
Do you have any raw pictures of them with the brake mounts ? That was the only part I couldn't get a good angle on in the pictures. Looks like Maier did a good job of tucking that ball joint in. I have to run 9" BS on my front wheels to get down to 1/2" SR. It also looks like that design has very low SAI.
Although I'm a fan of going with complete new design, ie space frame and rack & pinion, there is something deeply satisfying about using the stock subframe and steering box in this car.
One thing that I wanted to bring to your attention - the clevis being used in the fabrication photos on the FLCA has been known to break, there are some examples on corner-carvers somewhere. That is in an exceptionally high load area too, I would encourage you to look at the beefier clevises available from Coleman that should fit in that same spot (3/8" gap, 5/8 or 3/4 thread).
Favorite build thread for awhile I love discovering these things, I've gotten so jaded over the years its hard for me to still get excited but this one did it for me.
Also, I never saw a rwhp figure - you mentioned the K&N brought up your power so I assume you chassis dynoed it at that point. Any graphs ? Oh wait, that data is probably a bit classified as well.

I do not know the weight of the uprights. They are not light as they are all steel. Maier Racing has since made them with billet aluminum. I may be installing them later. He currently has them on his car.

I like the feel of the old style steering. That is why I went with it. The class rules also dictate the use of the stock subframe.

They only make 18"+. Mine are huge at 19" front and 20" rear. I went that big to get the biggest tire possible.

Great vid Brian, understeer harder to see on vid than over steer. After watching the vid I spent alot of time going through your build thread. I was especially curious on what transmission you were using and the G-Force certainly helps keep the weight down. I didn't hear you shift in the vid and am curious what rear gears your running. Very inspiring build and your years of experience in the sport definitely show in your build. This pretty much has to be my favorite build ever!!

Brian,
How does it compare to the vette?
Everything is faster in the Camaro compared to the Corvette...steering, throttle response and power. While the car is fairly easy to drive for me, I drove the Corvette for so long it was like an extension of me. I did not have to wonder at all how it was going to react to my inputs. I am still in learning mode and we are constantly making changes to the Camaro to get it dialed in. Out of the box, the Camaro was faster on the track and the gap is widening each time out.

It may be hard to see the understeer as I was kicking the rear end out to fight the understeer. The last turn before the finish you can see the understeer I was fighting.
I shifted two times. I ran most of the course in 1st gear and shifted to 2nd at the 29 second mark in the video and then back to 1st gear at the 33 second mark. 3:70 gears and a 2.49 1st and 2.0 2nd gear. The transmission makes a lot of noise, but it works great. Shifts are smooth and firm when you are driving the car hard.
Thanks,
Brian

2.49, 2.0, 1.49, 1.0. The first three are set up for autocross and 4th for freeway driving with the 3:70 rear. I can cruise on the freeway under 3000. I don't like the drop from 3rd to 4th on the road course, but I had to compromise. It drops down to 4700 rpm when I go from 3rd to 4th at redline. At least it has a lot of power there. I wish I could afford a 5 speed. Donations are accepted. :D
Flash68
10-10-2011, 12:50 PM
Oh wow I thought that was a 5 speed. Your 3rd gear is near equal to my 2nd gear. I obviously chose the road course setup. Your 1st couple gears gotta be fun on the street too.
So your top speed in 4th should be just a tad above what most of the big boys hit on the straight at Spring Mtn I am guessing. Nice.
