We have been working hard the last few weeks. We are probably about 2 - 3 weeks from going to the paint shop.

It will have two road race seats with 5 point harnesses. I plan on giving a lot of rides. :D

You got it! Next year, you need to come down to an American Autocross Series event. The best courses and 5 runs.

Where do they run at?

You should come up to one of our Oregon Region SCCA events at the Hampton Mills site in Packwood Wa. Two days with 6-8 or maybe more runs each day on an almost one mile (55-70sec) course. We do about three weekend events a year there not including National Tour.

Take a look here for some cool pictuers of the site and cars........I can't seem to copy any here, just little red x's
The second to the last picture on the loer right on page one is what I'm racing this year.

I have heard of the great events held in your part of the world. I hope to go up there next year.

Nice EP Mazda. I am fortunate to run with Tom Ellam and Dwayne Komush in EP in Nor Cal.

We took a couple weeks off the Camaro as we got very busy in the shop. Tomorrow we will be going back to it. The front end needs to get finished up. Hopefully, the car will be ready to be painted by the end of next week. I should have some good progress shots to post in a few days.

Sorry for the delay on the photos. We have done a lot of work and photos just don't show all of it. Here is where we are at now. The flares will be completed in the next couple days. Reworking the flares has taken a lot of time. Getting the gaps perfect has also taken a lot of time. We are working hard at getting the car into the paint shop for next week. So much work!!

My suggestion is to contact Mike Maier at www.maierracing.com. He did all the work and he can give you an idea. Sorry not to give you a dollar amount. I had a lot of work done by Mike and I do not know the breakdown of just the cage.

We spent this week reworking the left side fender flare to match our final product on the right side. The flares have been reworked a few times, each time getting better and better until we got what we wanted. Here are some photos showing the flare on the left side that we did not like and what we ended up with to have matching flares that we are very happy with.

Old flare:

We have been doing all the little things to finalize the body before paint. Of course, we did a few more things we did not count on. We did not like the cowl hood with the large spine down the center. It was also a bit uneven from the mold. The drivers side of the cowl was cut down and we made the top flat with a small body line down the center. The front nose is also near completion. All the lines where the nose pieces butt up against the fenders and nose extention are bonded and seams removed. The fiberglass deck lid with the molded spoiler was also modified. We added reinforcement to the spoiler and gave it more of a finished look.
A variety of other small custom items have been added.

Here is the hood before the modification

It is going to be a very bright and deep orange with a single black stripe. No metallic or pearl in the orange. I want a solid orange that screams muscle. It is brighter and deeper than hugger orange.

The stripe will be a satin black and over the roof. It should look really mean. The roof is so low, the stripe will be very visable, even for the vertically challenged.

We are on a roll with the application of the final color. All the parts are painted off the car. Once everything is painted, we will assemble the body parts and ship it back to the home shop for final assembly. We are using PPG's Envirobase Waterborne paint. We use PPG exclusively and it is amazing paint. When we converted a couple years ago from solvent to water, we were nervous at first. It has proven to be much better then solvent based paint.

Here are some recent shots of the hood and doors. More to come....

http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j188/bdjhob/IMG_3538.jpg

The satin black stripe will be applied later.

I have autocrossed in Nor Cal for about 25 years. I have autocrossed our 65 Corvette most of that time and the Camaro will be out there this spring. We will be from Mather if they run there this year to Marina. All the American Autocross events and a lot of SCCA events.

Thanks to all for the nice words. Yesterday was a very happy day. We got the car in the garage and looked at it for a while and got excited about the next assembly steps. I will post a few more photos this weekend.

Yes, those are some old Kumho's off the Corvette in the front. The Kumho 335/35/17 is slightly larger than the Hoosier in the same size. I wanted the option to run either one, so we installed those for the fender clearence measurements. New Hoosiers will be installed soon. Hoosier A6 all around.

on the Vette have you found the Kumho's to work better or the Hoosier? I was talking to some guys that run newer Vette's (C6 ZO6) and they were feeling the 710's worked better for them. They are definitely a little better price wise in those sizes.

They are both a great tire. I ran the Kumhos at a National Tour a few years ago with the Kumhos and won. We run them here and there when we want to run a DOT instead of the Goodyears slicks. We have a couple sets and I was waiting to buy the fronts until I needed to lay out the cash. Lateley, it seems the Hoosier is a bit faster and better suited for my Camaro.

Brian, I did a lot of looking for specifics on the 65 but didn't find the info I was looking for. Can you tell me what tire stagger you have on the car, and whether you sourced the flares of had to make them custom? I have a serious itch to do a wide body Corvette and have been leaning towards a chrome bumper C3 as I hadn't seen a C2 that I liked. Your car looks really good with the flares though, virtually all others I have seen I didn't care for. I am looking to go 305 minimum on the fronts.

Camaro looks fantastic, you must be getting really stoked up now that's "dressed!"

Mark,

The Corvette flares were done well over 30 years ago and were hand made. The car was flared the first week the original owner received it and they grew over the years as tires were getting bigger. There are not any molds of these flares. We get a lot of compliments on the flares. The body line continues down the side in the flares and they do not look added on. We run a 335/35/17 in the rear on a 17 x 12 wheel. A 345/35/18 or a 345/30/19 will fit with no problem in the rear. The front fits a 315/35/17 with a 17 x 12 wheel perfectly.

http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j188/bdjhob/AutoX42907235.jpg

I will be taking the Corvette to RTTC II and you can see it in person if you are there. I will have 315/35/17 all around for that event.

They are Etoile wheels that were made in France. I purchased them in 1990. At the time, they were the only wheels I could make the size I needed. They are long gone out of business. The car is driven on the street once in a while. It is registered and insured. It is just about all stock except the engine. All stock interior except the drivers seat. It even has the original radio! Stock suspension with stiffer springs and shocks. Besides the flares, the body is all orginal. It is an original 65 Fuel Injected car with an computer controlled fuel injection system and a 350. The original fuel injection motor is in the garage.

So were those the G19 Eagles? If I go with a smaller diameter wheel (15") like Frank Stagnaro's Mustang I think that is the tire to run. Do You know if that is what they are using?

Dan,

We run a spec 15" Goodyear bias slick 25x11x15 front and 27x11x15 rear. It is the GT/GT1/GT2 spec tire. Mike and Frank use a 16" G19 setup. Our local class uses the spec tire to keep the class as even as possible. It is a great tire as it has good stick and wear.

Here is a photo with the Goodyears on it.

Here is a photo of when we first installed the dash. I will be putting the dash in later next week and add some more photos at that time. The dash was cut on the ends because of the cage. Maier Racing filled in the corners with sheet metal. They also added about 1 1/2" of extra material to push the dash into the passenger compartment for some clearance issues we had. Dzus fasteners are used to hold the dash in place. You can see some of them in this photo.

Radiator support and cooling installed. With some minor modifications, everything seems to fit nicely.

The dash was installed today. Next is to figure out where to mount all the gauges and switches. The dash will come back off and finish off the texture and paint.

I also took apart the CCW wheels and painted everything black. I was going back and forth on whether to black out the outer wheel. I really like the all black look.

I have been in the process of gathering the electrical and plumbing parts. Assembly has begun and parts have been showing up the last couple days.

The gauges arrived from Speedhut. I wanted to keep as much as the original look as possible.

http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j188/bdjhob/100_6077.jpg

The speedometer is GPS. Very cool features. The tach was mailed back to be calibrated for the Mast M90.

The fuse panel was received today from Enos Custom Components. My buddy that is doing the electrical has used their products on a few builds and really likes them. I am impressed with it. The motor has its own fuse panel and relays. This one is just for the lights, signals, horn, and a few other items.

On the dash, I used a 3M light gravel guard and sanded it down. After that, SEM trim black. The trunk floor and interior floor has bed liner. I wanted a durable floor that cleans easily. I don't have cup holders, so I may spill.

The gauges are Speed Hut.

On the dash, I used a 3M light gravel guard and sanded it down. After that, SEM trim black. The trunk floor and interior floor has bed liner. I wanted a durable floor that cleans easily. I don't have cup holders, so I may spill.

The gauges are Speed Hut.

How is the gravel guard applied? Is it an aerosol?

I can't seem to find it.

I applied about 3 - 4 coats and then primed and lightly sanded the high spots down. Trim black to finish it off.

Amazing car, Brian. Can't wait to see it on the track for the first time.

A couple of quick questions...

1) About the dash... in an earlier post you mentioned its a VFN dash. I looked on their site and the picture they have posted looks different than your dash (the gauge area is more recessed). Did you modify that section of the dash, or is the picture on the VFN site just not accurate? I like the layout you have better. Here's the picture from their site (http://vfnfiberglass.com/site.htm):

28999

2) What size tach and speedo are you using? 3 3/8" or 4"

3) Finally, how many cans of the 3M Rocker Guard paint did you use? At $24/can, it's kind of expensive stuff but it sure looks killer!

Thanks!

It is a VFN dash that Maier Racing customized for me. The instrument cluster was moved back to clear the roll cage. Maier Racing does a lot of custom fiberglass work, so it was easy for them.

I am using 4" large gauges and 2 1/8" small gauges.

One can is plenty. I used about 1/2 a can.

Update!

We are getting really close. Just about everything is done. The few items left are to finish the electrical to fire up the engine, take the car to Maier Racing to have the front anti sway bar made and installed, then install the fornt clip and complete the electrical. We hope to have it done in about one month. Here are some recent photos:

Actually, the doors are fiberglass also. No more metal going on the car. The goal is to remove outside weight and add to the center and low. The class I will be running requires a minimum 3100 lbs.

Thanks for all the good words all. I getting really excited. Here are a couple more of the left quarter panel with the exhaust exit.

Do you have some sort of a closeout panel for the rear? I assume that exhaust heat would make the driver sweat his a** off.

The rear seat area has aluminum panels that have been painted and heat/sound blocking material added to the back side. Here is a photo before they were finished.

Again....holy crap! The worlds nicest C/P car by far.

Question on the exhaust. Are You going to put a stainless (or other metal) plate around the exhaust outlet for ease of cleaning since it's likely to leave some blackness around it?

The weight gain is minimal. The car will weigh about 2600 lbs when it is completed. All the bolt on panels are fiberglass (doors, hood, fenders, nose, bumpers, deck lid). Because I am running a 416 cubic inch motor and 18" x 12" wheels, the car must weigh 3100 lbs. I will be adding about 500 lbs of lead / steel to the floor and cage behind the rear seat. All very low and centered weight. And yes, this will be a tricked out CP Camaro with lights that I will occasionally drive on the street. People say I am crazy, but, I have a vision and I am seeing it thru. :D

Brian,
Have you thought about adding weight inside the rockers themselves? That's a pretty low CG, I would think.
Oh yeah, Awesome build!

The tires are open to slicks or DOT R compound tires. In Nor Cal, we have some of the fastest CP cars in the country and one is on Hoosier DOT A6's. He and his son are right there with Mike Maier, the National Champ. I am going to try the Hoosiers along with Goodyears new DOT radial this summer. They each require a slightly different set up and driving style.

Thank you so much for the kind words. I had a lot of fun at RTTC 2. My Dad and I have had a lot of fun with the Corvette the past 25 + years. I would not call it "retired" but maybe give it a rest for a while. We will still run some local Corvette events and an occasional American Autocross or SCCA event. My Dad my take it out on a weekend I can not make it out with the Camaro. I plan on going through the Corvette from top to bottom in the next couple years. It has been a work horse for a long time and needs a little love.
