Hi Brian, yes, that is the car on DSE's webpage. I bought it in Michigan and towed it back to the Seattle area. Being a first timer, it's alot more work than I had anticipated but I'm learning and enjoying it all as I go along.

It looks like you are progressing nicely when it was on ebay it looked like all the bare metal on the car had surface rust on it. I wish I could have started with a car that was already at that point.

Thanks for the replies, Jonny, that is one nice 69, I'm envious.
Bruce, raptor is similar to bed liner but lighter, not as heavy a texture, not as much rubber % wise and no harmful toxins. I put it on instead of painting it the same color as the car because I plan on doing a lot of driving and I'm hoping this makes for easy clean up.
Bill, as you all know color seems to be the most difficult choice to make and it changes weekly but I'm holding steady with wanting to give it the cuda/mustang look with flat(semi) black inserts on black paint? But who knows until I actually shoot it, hopefully by the end of May.

I almost bought that car when it was in Michigan! The guy was selling almost every piece. Now I feel like I'm going to cry, :( I was so close.

A little "cutsie" and your car seems more bad-ass than that..

How about "Phoenix Rising"

After all, it is a FIREBIRD and that conotes the ancient myth of the Phoenix being reborn from the ashes. Lots of symbolism given that your car is being brought back from the "dead".

PHX RSNG as a license plate :)

Here is my experience. First installed GM hood seal. The back of hood stood up 1/2 higher then fender. They were ok in there day, however, they never fit properly. Then purhased soft seal. Musch better fit. Afterwards decided what the heck do I even need a seal for. Filled the holes and painted to match smoothed out firewall.

Nice looking bird. . .I hadn't seen this post before. . .I wish I was as far along on my project 'Bird (Tomahawk) as you are, but I'm still waiting to be able to ship mine from out of my Dad's garage out to me in Cali!!!
Thanks for sharing the Raptor stuff (and the ceramic Lizard Skin stuff from Speedster). . .I'm gonna have to check both of those out. . .I wanted to coat the underside/frame of the car with a more durable finish than just paint or powdercoat but I didn't want the extra wait of a truck bed liner. . .I will definitely be looking into both of these coatings! What company produces the Raptor coating. . .I tried a google search and found a company called Extremeion that has a Carbon Raptor coating, but I'm not sure if this is the same stuff that you used? Where did you get it applied at?

'Bird looks really good and good luck on the trunk deck gaps. . .not looking forward too much to that portion of my build when I get there.

Thanks for sharing!!!

That will be a cool car when finished. Great stance. I used the Raptor coating on the underneath of a '69 GTO me and my brother are building. Great stuff and easy to apply. My local paint supplier had a kit with the gun for a $100 bucks. Came with 4 quart bottles. Just add the activator to a bottle and screw it on the gun and spray. Looks nice too. Did the whole underneath with 3 quarts over a black epoxy primer. Thinking about doing the inside too.

Good call HRBS, it is to clear the lift. Thanks for the good words, it tooks 3 different valances to do it, a new camaro repo 68 and 69, and the original 68 Firebird 400 valance which was not in great shape. after piecing it together, we leaded it. So far I like pretty much everything we've done. I am considering changing out my rear 17" wheels to either 18's or19's to fill alittle more wheel well space. Thanks again :lateral: ideas.

Thanks Wayne, The time consumed in getting the car ready for paint has been alittle frustrating but the craftmanship is phenomemal. I'll show afew pics as it sits in a post below. The front bumper is mounted with 2 bolts just for pics but has been shaved and worked for paint and the gaps are perfect to match the gaps on the rest of the car. The other mods are front valance, rear 68 camaro bumper(to accomodate rear shelby gas cap mod.) worked for paint and fitted closer to car, and everything else shaved except for rear quarter pontiac marker lights (still debating that one, what do you guys think I should do w/it?). Other than that the car it ready for final block and wet sand before painting.

I'll put the Wayne Due front end back on it Wednesday and then hopefully keep painting the remaining pieces right away. Once that's done, we'll assemble, wet sand then buff. She is straight, Mark did a great job on the body work.

Lenie, that turned out damn nice. I will be giving you a call on tuesday about the pontiac motor. Once you throw the right heads on that thing and a nice cam youll never think of doing a LSX motor. Sorry boys Ive got a warmed over Lq9 in my truck and it just dosent have that down low torque.

Lenie you know I am an LS guy...but a clean poncho motor with some efi updates and stainless accents could really set if off. how 'bout saving the money from doing an LS swap and putting some boost to it like the Nova Troy is building. I think the look of the Ponitac motor will add Major styling points, just my 2 cents- Chris

I appreciate everyone's positive reinforcement. I now go over and work on it everynight after work and weekends until it's finished. Fingers are getting alittle raw but getting alot accomplished these past two weeks. Not a very good photographer but you get the idea. The upper two pictures are taken through the booths dirty glass windows. Everything gets two base coats then wet sanded, then another two base coats and then five coats of clear. Next, a lot of wet sanding and buffing.
Todd I really appreciated you taking the time today to answer my questions. It was a huge help.

I hate to be picky but that flag pole is not straight.

Mike, to funny. I really need to get a flag up on that pole.

Looking Sweet Lenie !

Thanks Wayne, It's home, now I can go back to working on it any time I want instead of having to arrange shop time.

LOL.. and the table cloth is crooked.

Beautiful paint! Car is looking awesome.

You and Mike. Actually those chairs are about 20'away, the flag pole in my yard is about 60' away, the table cloth is actually a 19' boat covered with canvas sitting along side the neighbors house about 100' away. Thanks Roger

Looks awesome. Look forward to more pictures

Thanks Tom

WOW! That paint turned out great! I can't wait to see it!!

Thanks Tony, hopefully this spring if all goes well

Awesome, you nailed it!

Alex

Thanks Alex, along ways to go with a few more changes in mind.

Looks awesome Lenie!! Paint looks like it's still wet.
The wheels and tires look good as well. Keep us posted.

Thanks Tones, I like the wheels and tires but I'm changing sizes.

looks good, when can I come see it???

Chris, your welcome to come over anytime you'd like, we're close, just give me a call. Bring your tools. Z-bar, clutch, pedal assembly, brake and fuel lines, gas tank, sending unit, radiator and hoses, wiring, I'll get a room ready for you:rofl:   :unibrow: Seriously, anytime your heading this direction, feel free to stop by.

Looks Killer Lenie, that black paint is unreal.

Thank you Rybar.

Wow that Black must be unreal in realtime, lots of depth there
We need more pics

Thanks, it turned out pretty good but next time I'm going to stay away from the black. Alot of body work and maintenance to keep the depth. Everything shows, but it looks good clean.

X2

Lenie did you farm out the paint. Or was the gun in your hand.
Looks great, car has come a long way from your original post.
Dave

Thanks Dave, I farmed out the paint. I did the initial body work, first round
of primer, guide coat and block sanding but it had been 20 years since I last sprayed a car and since I was going black and want the car to get it's just rights, I chickened out and hired a professional. While it was in the shop for
2 1/2 years, I did my son's 1966 chevelle from start to finish and was pretty happy with the outcome. The individual I hired did a good job with it but if I had it to do over again, I'd do it myself now that I've reassured my confidence.

The person that came up with the idea of putting a hydraulic lift inside the paint booth is a friggin' genius!!

How sweet that would be to have your assistant be able to lift the car up to eye height as you're coming down the sides.

Paint on this car is exceptional! Nice job!

Thanks, the hydraulic post lift in his booth is sweet.

That right there isn't your typical paint job. That Paint looks unreal.
I wonder how much time was spent on cutting and buffing.
I bet that was upwards of a **** load of money.

Thanks, it was a**** load of money.

looks good Lenie, but why do you keep teasing us? lets see some more photo's

Thanks, sometimes it's better with the longerie still on:unibrow:

Hey Lenie, I have to agree with Tony. Those wheels look right at home on the car. I am having a hard time imagining a different wheel looking better on there. But then again the car is so incredible just about any wheel will look good. That paint is just KILLER! Did you do all of the prep and painting yourself? What about final cut and buff?

Thanks, I'm going to different size wheels, preference. Believe it or not, final sand and buff has yet to be done. I want to assemble it first and then I'll do the final sand and buff.

One word...... sweeeeet!

Thaaaaaanks Al.

Dang.... she looks gorgeous!!

Thanks Phil

Wow. Stunning!

Thanks Flash.

i got to hand it to you, that thing is insane!!!

Thanks Brian

Bad arse!!!

sp check:rofl: Thanks

Looks killer, love the blacked out grille.

Thanks Rybar, along w/using a 68 camaro rear bumper because of gas cap mods, the rear bumper has been shaved, tucked and also painted black. I'm pretty much going to stay with the dark them with the trim pieced also.

Wow Lenie -

You Firebird looks absolutely incredible. Very nice buddy...

Bruce, I really appreciate the vote of confidence coming from another bird owner. How has progress been going with your project? Would love to see pictures if you have any.

That rear shot is awesome. Looks mean and ready for business!

Thanks Tones, I like it also. I think it will look pretty good with the modified bumper and gas cap installed.

WHEW, man I need to stay on top of my replies. Built some cribbing, lifted the car in the air 12" so I can get under it to work. Pretty convenient. Here's the bird nested. Oh and I've decided not to go with the name FOWLPLAY, to weak. Will change it later.

I actually took these off and put them on my Turquoise and white Nomad -- they didn't look the same... if they did - I'd be taking you up on yours! LOL

Greg, please send me that 55 of yours:unibrow: Ya know, I haven't ruled out getting another pair, just in a bigger size. I called budnik last year and asked if I could just get the rears in 19x12's and they told me they don't make them in a step lip anymore otherwise I would have saved alittle dinero and took that route.

Hey Tony, maybe my statement was a little misleading. I have yet to purchase another set of wheels. I haven't found any that I can't live w/o so I'm waiting until my project is closer to completion or I come to a decision I'm sure about. As of now, I only know they will be 18's and 19's.

Not my car guys -- I'm just putting it together for a buddy of mine. He has ZERO skills -- ZERO tools... Long story - but it was his DREAM and another buddies project... I only offered to do what they couldn't - transfer the body onto the AME chassis -- slick the firewall.... and rotate it a couple times on the rotisserie to clean the bottom etc before the transfer... oh... and make a new tranny tunnel.. and modify the trunk floor - and build the SS exhaust... THEN it was to go to my buddies house/shop - where they'd do all the rest... that was TWO YEARS ago - and nothing got touched. I mean NOTHING. So I rescued the project... brought it back to my shed and will now finish it up. Seems some guys eyes are bigger than their skill set. :(

Now - since all of this occurred... Rick (owner) had a MAJOR stroke - so will never drive the car... and in his current state - wouldn't even know it was his. But I'll still enjoy putting it all back together - and if I can - take him out for a ride in it.

Been watching for a while and never posted on your build, just awesome. Love the simple blackout look on everything. Great paint work, too! I know how much effort goes into a finish like that. my arm aches, and my finger tips burn just looking at it. I guess mostly because I know how much of that is ahead on my bird.:_paranoid

Yes -- he has a son that is into cars a bit - but more BMW's... Rick gave him his old M3 - when he bought his new M6 the week before we headed out to SEMA... Rick also has a brand new Z06 - a 63 split window - a 57 hardtop fuelie... and a couple 'normal' cars... Some of the guys are firing them up and keeping 'em running.

This whole thing has been real hard on our little group of hot rodders... kind of is exposing our ages I guess...

Thanks for the positive remarks folks. I do like the front valance, it's actually one of my favorite alterations on the car. I recently bought a vacant lot to build another house on and have been getting the one I live in ready for sale which is cool, unfortunately it means the car has had to take a back seat until I'm finished. I did get the ss brake lines in which turned out very nice (hard to photograph) and have powder coated a few items. Was a little bored this morning so I had my son shoot a few pics. Thanks again.
