Mark, in few of your earlier posts you show that you're using IImuch vents, one for the diff and one for the fuel tank. It looks like the Rick's tank has provisions for a rear/ top fitting. Is that the only vent you're using? TIA. Let me re-phrase the question, is the rear tank port the only one you're using?

The Ricks tank has a vent system inside the tank to help. We also add a fitting to the filler neck to help prevent fuel from pushing out of the tank. With all of that said if you 100% fill the tank on a hot day then park the car in the hot sun it might puke over out the 2 Much canister.

The issue is the Ricks tanks and most aftermarket tanks do not have room for expansion.

This one of the only issues we had with Charlies new Riv.

The 2 Much canisters do a great job with fuel vapors but no pure fuel.

I may add an expansion tank to the project before the 2 Much canister to keep raw fuel out of it.

Thanks for the comment I almost forgot about that.

To be honest to save time and money. The full cages are cool but make everything harder. Harder to make the cage itself. Harder to cleanly fit the dash pad. The park brake becomes an issue. Hard to fit the Vintage Air.

Also at work for our track cars we have gone the the same set up. I design the safety equipment to plan for a front end impact. If I have an issue I plan to crash nose in. I might survive.

You know these cars better than I, but I always thought my car suffered from flexing in front of the cowl. Before Hood pins, the hood would pop auto crossing and road racing with solid body mounts. I thought down bars would help stabilize, but that’s speculation.

Love the build!

The weld in subframe connects help a lot.

Yes a full cage is better if you want a stiffer car. If you want a fast track car buy a C6 Z06 and save yourself a lot of time and money.

Fuel pressure question

When you turn the ignition on does the fuel pumps hold fuel rail pressure? Recently installed a lt4 in a friends 69 and ignition on the fuel pressure goes to 40ish and then drops to zero. Tested this with a online -6an fuel pressure gauge at the fuel inlet at the engine. My gmpp ls3 swap it will hold the fuel pressure with key on

Secondary fan/ AC fan activation

I noticed on a gmpp tune the second fan doesn’t come on till 221 degrees. What do you set your fan settings at? Can you activate the secondary fan with the ac on?

For the stuff that needs service it is the Gate Power Grip clamps. For hoses that need to be serviced an regular worm gear hose clamp with heat shrink tubing over the strap to make it black. Keeps things clean looking.

Could you explain your rear spoiler choice (instead of say an adjustable rear wing) and how it works on track?

Thanks.

Like you said it looks clean. If I was building this to be a track weapon I would do a different rear spoiler. 99% of time I’ll just be driving this on the street. For the few open track day I do it will be fine. I would rather have it look stockish vs some “Ricer” wing on it.

I’ve worked on a lot of IRS setups at GM and they are hard to get correct. I’m happy with my solid axles. Power hop issues. Breaking halfshafts and CV joints. Once you get to 800 plus Ft*Lbs a IRS get very big and heavy.

Leaving cost out of the equation for now, would you ever want to install a full frame chassis in a 1st gen?

What would be your reasons pro or con?

If I missed it in here, my apologies. How do you normally handle your connections at the battery as far as any circuit protection and then where they (or it/positive) runs in to the engine bay for distribution?

BTW...thanks for always giving us a look behind the curtain and most importantly, the why you do things a specific way.

If money were NO concern? I would definitely do a full chassis that was fully designed and engineered. Optimize everything and get the packaging just right. Redesign all the driveline while I was at it. Do all the FEA to make it as light and stiff as possible. Oh and if money were of NO concern I would do a full carbon fiber body to boot.

But then you need to ask your self my favorite Charlie question - "Then what are you gong to do with it".

Cruiser, Track Monster, Both...

At GM we have VTS - (Vehicle Technical Specifications) it has things like:

0-60 times
1/4 mile times
Top Speed
Fuel Economy
Interior Cabin Noise
Wind Noise
Exhaust Tone and Sound Level
Tire Wear
Stopping Distance
Ride Quality
Track Lap Times
Cooling Specs
Towing Capability
Etc.....

Which ones do you want to optimize? We have a teams of people at GM that work for years on this stuff.

You can not have a S-Class Mercedes ride and a Corvette ZR-1 lap times. Hard to violate the laws of physics.

Pro - It would be great! Could spend the time to get a optimized chassis and driveline.

Con - Time and Money, and you will be disappointed when you are done unless you do your own VTS.

Just my two cents.

I noticed that your rear brake caliper is mounted at the 9 o'clock position, if you were looking at it from the driver's side.

Is there a reason you do this? Any benefit or added performance from the caliper being mounted there instead of the usual 2-3 o'clock position?

Is that just the way the Brembos mount? I'm used to seeing them more towards the rear on the other side of the axle.

Does mounting like that have any advantage or is it just cosmetic/packaging, brake line routing friendly?

It is usually just a packaging issue. Mine are in the front of axle position due to the way I designed the park brake.

I’m sure if I did a deep Engineering analysis there is an optimal solution. For my builds it is packaging.

I do know on the front and most likely for the rear caliper. Having rearward will help brake pad cooling.

These are the cooling lines that move the transmission fluid. It is a loop. There is a electric pump that circulates the trans fluid through a oil to water heat exchanger in the radiator then the chilled trans fluid gets pumped back to the diff. It goes though a oil to oil heat exchanger then back to the trans. This is how GM does it in production except the trans pump is built into the transmission.

Several brands carry the same hose under different names btw. Fragola Race-Rite Pro is what I went with on the my builds. The crimper and required dies, tooling, etc are certainly an investment but the time that it saves assembling hoses pays off in the long run. The performance, durability, flexibility (bend radius), flow and light weight of the hose made it worth it to me. The Pro or Extreme add an externally wound stainless steel wire that provides vacuum support and tighter bend capability.

Yes with variations in the sheathing stripe colors or just plain black Aramid. Also Fragola Race-Rite Pro has an additional variation that I not sure what Goodrich number it crosses to.

Fragola Race Rite Pro: Convoluted exterior with added Spiral Wire increases hoop strength to prevent hose sucking shut under high vacuum. Spiral wire provides an even better bend radius.

Matt put all the modules on one removable panel so it can be serviced. Some lessons learned from the Riv and Blazer.

Love this setup. Where does the mount go behind the dash on a first gen.. I might need to see if they will make more of these and sell them.

Is the 2 gallon peterson tank you start with on your builds their off the shelf 6x19.5 or is it made with custom dimensions?

Thanks, I thought it looked a bit wider than 6". I take it the extra volume is from that boxed out portion that mounts to the firewall?

Very neat solution by the way, I'm leaning towards trying the same thing after seeing how crowded the engine bay is otherwise.

Awesome build and love the updates. One quick question I see your fuel pressure sensor is pointed down. Any known issues with this? Just was reading and GM mentioned it to be pointed up anywhere in the 9-2 o-clock position. Not saying its wrong I actually would prefer to mount mine facing down like this on the frame rail and was just curious. Thanks

Car looks amazing Mark. You must be dying to get it buttoned up and shake it down. I'd love to hear the exhaust with the new mufflers you're trying out.

2 questions for you. Can you explain the vent plumbing you have going on your tank? I know some guys have had some trouble with venting their tank and spilling fuel.
The other is how you went about securing your lines under the car. I'm ASSuming the brake line, you drilled and tapped the DSE subframe connector? But what have you done in the thinner floor pan material?

As always, thank you for taking the time to share and answer our questions!

A fuel tank needs room to vent. The lines attempt to connect the vent to the highest point in the tank. One up on the filler neck and the other on the top corner. They Tee together then go up to the TooMuch vent in the trunk. Hope it works. If not I’ll add a expansion tank. The issue in the summer we pump 70 degree fuel into a car when it is 90 degrees out side. The fuel expands and fills the TooMuch vent. OE ad a dome or expansion area for this. In hot rods we want all the fuel volume we can get.

We route the brake lines the best we can on the subframe. Going rear we end up riding them down to the bottom of the car on the sheet metal. Because of the ABS it is 2 rear brake lines.

OEMs have a"dead man" in a fuel tank......basically an inverted pie tin with a pinhole in the top surface.
When you thought you'd filled the tank, air is still trapped in the pie dish void and the fuel nozzle cuts out. The pinhole allows controlled venting to occur, so that when the fuel increases in temperature and volume (now that it's out of the ground), it swells into that void and doesn't puke out the vent lines.
THATS WHY YOU DON'T TOP OFF AFTER THE FIRST CLICK.

TOOmuch vent chamber gives the liquid/air time to settle out and is a great feature........but can't cope with massive west-coast changes in temp out of the ground vs. cooking in 95* ambient.

Aftermarket tanks don't have this feature.
Competing claims to the largest volume compared to the competition?

The vent line connection is low from the back port. Wouldn’t you think fuel slosh would get back in the line and since the hardline is low there’s no way for the fuel to go back in the tank? You would think over time it would cause your hardline to fill up and make the filler neck vent pointless

Now that I think about I think you are correct on the tank vent. I’ll add a overflow tank in the tank before the TooMuch canister. [emoji848]

I’ve alway welded in a lug in the back of the car to ground to. I know all the instructions say ground to the block, but I have never had an issue.

I have been adding a battery disconnect in the trunk on the negative side of the battery. Makes it easy to kill the power.

Cerametallic variety I assume. I went with the same one in my Optima Vette build....so far I am very impressed. On the lighter side and still good street manners. One of the race shops that has several customers running them in track cars have all reported to be holding up well. And this comes from a shop that has either themselves or seen customer's clutches fail in all the other top brands. If I hadn't already purchased the DYAD for the Camaro build it would have this clutch in it too. The Tilton 6000 series TOB has a better seal design as well IMO which I do have in both.

Stielow

No I went with the street one. I got it from Summit. My DYAD always on back order for 9 months. I decided to try the Tilton.

The floater plate is strapped like the OE style clutch’s. I hope this stops the floater plate from rattling.

The older ones did. The last one I put into Gunner was quite for about a year then rattled a little. Love the DYAD. It shifts great and it well made. When I assembled the engine to the transmission they were on back order. So called Summit and had this clutch in 3 days.

Hey Mark. Great build per usual...

I’m wondering how you check the oil with the dry sump tank in that location. Do you use a custom dipstick through the fitting on the firewall? Would a sight glass welded on the side of the tank work?...

Thank you for all the information and ideas you provide to this forum.

Many LED bulbs are too bright as running lights (Gordon’s Camaro[emoji2959])

I wanted LED bulbs closer to stock brightness for running lights.

So Mark, what lumen number did you end up with?

Also if you don't mind stating, what source are you using for the fiberglass front bumper?

I just read a bunch of reviews and went with these.

The front bumper was from 4 years ago. I think was from Marquez. I’ll need to double check and it needed a lot of rework.

I’m running 18X10 front and 18X12 rear mainly due to tire availability. For events that require a 200 tread wear tire the BFG Rival is the go to right now.

If you do not intend to track the car the Michelin is a better street tire. If you like the look of 18/19 go for it.

Yes I use the ECM to PWM the fans. This is not how the GM crate cal is set up. I have to make a new cal to do that.

The fan runs off 3 inputs - Coolant Temp, AC head pressure and inlet air temp post intercooler bricks.

You can use a trinary switch on the a/c line, so the computer controls the fans whenever the a/c is off, and once the a/c is on the switch bypasses the computer control and turns the fans on automatically. I'm going to be using a standalone PWM controller for my twin Ron Davis fans.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the GM ECM doesn't use a trinary switch when controlling fans by way of PWM.

I don’t like the look or function of hood pins. I have run a stock hood latch on most of my cars.

We ran a test at work to see the force on a hood latch on a 2008 CTSv at 190 mph. It was over 300 lbs of force trying to pull the latch open.

I have not had an issue with the stock latch with my Carbon Fiber hood. But we have a big steel reinforcement plate in the hood that the latch bolts into.

If you want to be 100% sure do some old school hood pins. I personally hate them.

I can say at 170 mph in my cars you can see the corners of the hood being forced up by the under hood pressure. Another reason I have hood vents.

Good luck!

Mark

I like the finish on your dash - is that just an off the shelf crackle paint or something else?

This build is beautiful. So right in a subtle way, and not overdone. As someone who is trying to emulate much of what you've done in recent builds, one of the hardest things is to keep things simple and logical in both function and appearance.

Not to be flippant but hire a good painter. I honestly have never painted a radiator until I did Red Devil and the Dutchboys suggested painting it.

I know this time around they painted them black then applied a satin clear to get the correct sheen.

On my Blazer I used a lot of SEM Trim Black. At home when I need to repair something Trim Black works great.

Good luck

I had the Recaro reworked with red houndstooth material and the back seat done to match.

The Dakota Digital dash and AC controls are linked together and have matching lighting.

Well this is why repo parts suck. Stock glass was all scratched up so we need new glass. Easy right?

We went through 4 sets of glass to get door glass that fit.

First set the glass was wavey

Second set the door glass curvature was way off. Could not be made to deal

Third set same bad curvature

Forth set fit and was not wavey

Thanks,

Scott

The fill ports were from a LT4 lines set. I have not used reservoirs in my last 3 builds. I have usually added Jiffy Tite dry breaks to the top of the intercooler to bleed the system.

This time I made a reservoir at the very top of the system to bleed it. When we evacuated and filled the system it worked great. It is critical on this supercharged systems to get all the air out. After we filled the system we removed the extra reservoir and reinstalled the factory caps.

The easiest way to know if the system has no air is fire up the intercooler pump(s) with the engine off and listen for air going through the pump. If it is dead quite no air. You will hear the air pockets gong through the pump.

Another note. Keep the system as restriction free as possible. Don't use a lot of 90 degree fitting and extra lie length. Short runs and minimal bends..

Good luck

Mark

Thanks Mark! I wouldn't have thought a system would work without some room for thermal expansion, but obviously you've proven that wrong.

I did find this kit (https://gspeed.myshopify.com/products/gspeed-dry-break-intercooler-bleed-kit) to add a dry break and high point for bleeding LT4 systems. Kinda spendy but probably worth it when you read about how tricky these systems are to bleed and get all the air out.

That kit looks like an Jiffy Tite fitting and reservoir.

Good idea. Similar to what I did on my LT4 but with a hose and reservoir I hung from my hood latch.

GM has done the reservoirless intercoolers on several cars now, my ATS-V being one of them. I think the LT4s are the same way. Haven't worked on an LT5.

My hunch is the lengths of rubber hoses and the hoses being flexible is enough allowance for thermal expansion. It's not a huge volume and not a large delta T, at least compared to the engine coolant.

And yes, bleeding the reservoirless systems is a bit of a pain.

The "riser funnel" method like the kit you posted works pretty well, in my experience you can get about 90% of the air out by filling the funnel and toggling the pump on an off many times to "burp" the system-- you'll get enough air out, at least enough so it won't trip the ECM's pump cavitation monitoring on a factory car. The cavitation monitoring on the factory cars will shut the intercooler pump down if it detects cavitation from air in the system (I'm guessing it monitors the pump current for excessive ripple which would indicate air in the system, or low current which would indicate no coolant and no load on the pump.)

However, if I first bleed the system by the "riser funnel" and pump cycling method, then hook up the factory filling/bleeding method of a Kent Moore quick connect fitting and a Vac-N-Fill, it will pull a little more air out of the system that the "riser funnel" method left in. The factory intakes have the fill points located a bit lower than the tops of the intercooler bricks in the intake, so air will always want to collect in the bricks at the highest point. Only way to get 100% of the air out of the system is to use a Vac-N-Fill or similar and run it through a couple of vacuum and draw cycles until it only pulls a steady stream of coolant out.

Thanks for the info. There are a lot of threads on these subjects in the C7 Z06 sub-forum on Corvette Forum. It appears from the testing done in this thread (https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums/c7-z06-discussion/3847431-intercooler-pump-cavitation-and-shutdown.html) that the cavitation protection is actually built into the pump itself. I'm using a replacement pump from Lingenfelter which will hopefully not be as fussy, but getting all the air out is important regardless.

BTW the C7 Z06 does use a small reservoir, which might actually be making the aeration/cavitation problem worse.
