Keep us on the wrong coast over here updated please.
Darrell will be running Greg's car in the 1st 2 sessions Sunday. Most of the kinks seem to have been worked out or worked around. Hoping for some clear space for Darrell to do this thing. He won't run 3rd or 4th sessions as those are grouped with HPDE4 and the car counts are just too big to get a clean lap at his pace.
will you be out there tomorrow?
Yes I am running both full days in the sh*tbox Fox. :D

Bet with warm tires and no traffic that would easily do 1:42.0

Biggest update — DAMN WE HAD SOME FUN!! Ate a lot - drank more - cried a little (or a lot) ——— Thrashed a little — and RAN A LOT! Finally this car is on track and it’s a ****ing beast. Thank you to Dave Gordon for putting Darrell Anderson in the seat! Hoosier for the tires! Kurt Urban for what is surely a very impressive motor!
We have some work to do —- a few of the very last of the Sutton “mister know it all” boneheaded BS to ditch — it has too much front spring - too much rear aero - and his Detroit Locker causes throttle induced push..... all easy small fixes and then Darrell wouldn’t have to lift in places he should be balls out....
Mostly though! We had the best band of meatheads on earth in one place doing what we all love to do. Pappy - Dave Gordon - Rob Dickey - Lance - Bob Bragga and his FIL Garry *(the new owner of Old Yeller!) - Ness (NSrs) - Ron Schwarz - Payton King - Sieg - Gordon McGilton - my buddies Pierre and Ivan - Vince - My kids Alex and Adrienne - my wonderful wife Gwen who’s birthday was the 15th and she was okay sharing it with meatheads - Jody showed up - Matt and Steve Acala - Dan Basher - Steve Gernon - John (Goosedad) - Blake and Anita Foster - and The Bermea in the house!!! OMG we had some fun - and this weekend was just the weekend I needed to bring me out of a DEEP personal funk.... LOVE YOU GUYS!!!!

Bummer on the second Sunday session, saw the car take off when the safety car pulled off, but we were still bunching up for turn 11( when we all hammer down).
You guys were already through turn two and most of us were still back in 10. Did he even get a clean lap?

He never really got a clean lap — and frankly — this was more about FINALLY getting the car up and really running... and we were able to do that - and get a deeper look in to what she needs. I thought he was going to hang with the Norma — but he let the Norma get out and he said he got one decent fast lap in (the 1.43.8) and then he didn’t have tire pressures quite right and it started to push like a dump truck. It doesn’t matter. We got some great info - and “WE” all had some great times sitting up on T9 hill watching!!

I had SO much fun finally meeting face to face and getting to know all you better. Very happy that we decided to make the trip out.
Watching Darrel blast around the track all weekend in PacMan was just icing on the cake.
Rest up Greg... I'll need your help later this week firing up Barney for the first time with his new updates.

Love seeing Sutton still lurking and following whats happening with car. I know it's just killing him that he's not the center of attention and has been relegated to the butt of all jokes.

I was talking with Blake after the first session on Sunday about the car and how it was working and the one thing I loved the most was when he said the catch can was empty after every session. :)
Coolant temps steady at 195, oil pressure steady, no fluid leaks at all, no parts falling off...you know, all the basic easy stuff to take care of that wasn't before.

Greg,
As if the track footage didn't make me smile enough, seeing how much fun you guys had sure added to it. I'm stoked for you and that the car did so well. Watching it repetitively blow doors off of Miatas was surely entertaining. I would have made the drive if I still lived in California. I can't wait to see more!

1.38.
Thank you Greg for entrusting us with the dirt missile redo. I hear we have a new name for the car possibly??

V-Box video — it’s an automotive/racing set up
It’s not set up well at all - and is capable of so much more “on screen” data - we will work on that now - but doing video **** is kind of the “last thing” on the project - since it’s really not important to the cars performance - it’s just for smiles afterwards. We’ll try to do better.

My greatest regret in all of this - in hindsight - is that I just didn’t pull the “date” for the car to be built - and insist you guys build it in the first place. It would ultimately have been done “sooner” than what this weekends date was!! And I might possibly have had a chance to wheel this biotch myself. Hindsight is always 20/20
Our personal friendship over the years - which outsiders may not understand - has meant the world to me - and to be able to watch the growth and success for all involved in Speedtech Performance has just been outstanding. I’m so proud of you!!
Many don’t know that Blake and I have just been hot rod buddies for quite a few years — but I’ve never spent $1 with the company. For no reason than the cars I’ve been building don’t use these kinds of parts. I have tried to be there for business discussions = as a friend to good friend.
Love you buddy - and forever in your debt!
What you and Anita meant to this weekend is unspeakable.... being there - thrashing on the car - cooking meals - hanging with everyone and seeing your effort wail on some pesky Miatas *LOL* - a 24 hour round trip drive on top of that!!!
NOW — Get that drag car out and give ME a weekend to come see YOU run that bad boy!!

Kurt Urban at Scoggins Dickey Race Shop knows how to build a motor —- SUTTON DOES NOT.....
The tranny in this car was the reason the car started in the first place —- I had three track cars — vintage Old Yeller - The Lotus - The big wing ‘07 car —- I wanted more tire - a little bit more motor - and a sequential. Rather than rebuilding and modifying one that I had - seemed like a good idea to just build a whole new car from scratch...... ENTER MUTTONHEAD — F’d it all up....
He thought he was the only one that knew anything about building a car —- I got news for ya — ain’t my first rodeo — and I have lots and lots of great people I can lean on for support..... nobody needs this ahole fake.

When the "rough" tuning is complete and it's in the fine tuning phases this car should open a more than a few experienced eyes at the track.
Darrell's experience and ability to adapt and drive around a less than ideal set up is very impressive. He was forced to be feathering throttle off most the critical fast apexes to maintain front grip, when they get the front gripping look out!
Besides being a talented driver, Darrell's willingness to let a bunch of unknow outsiders freely use his shop and tools and him lending all his time for the "cause" was genuinely impressive.
He went above and beyond every minute of every day, an absolute class act, always polite and curteous with a great personality and sense of humor. I left with a huge amount of respect for this man that I only met on Thursday evening.

The car is basically a Trans AM car without the rules..... fast lap for TransAM this weekend was a 1.38.5 ==== we can get there, I think.
The beauty of it — NO SAUCE REQUIRED. It’s a simple 3 link rear - wide stance - great shocks (JRi’s).... there’s nothing magic - nothing secret - The Kurt Urban lawn mower motor is absolutely STELLAR — again — no sauce... but a real actual motor builder that knows a thing or two.
What held it back??? Two last Sutton items - the pushy locker - and his too heavy of front bar. Ditching that as we speak.
Lawns will be getting shorter.

Gregg, ecstatic to hear this car is starting to perform to it's potential.
Couldn't happen to a better guy.
About the locker, are you loosening up the locker or ditching it for a posi unit?
Has me second guessing about the locker going in my car. Maybe Lance can chime in on the performance, I know he put one in Barney. I am assuming it is still in his car.

Talked to the driver about his pass on me at turn 11 at about the 7:40 mark. I was turned in on my line and had I not noticed him, and heard the down shifts, I would have turned right in on him..his fault. After watching the video, he stole the inside line from several people....not a good way to make friends and quickly become "that guy/that car".
While TT is racey, it is not a race. Dive bombing and stealing peoples track out area is a bad idea, as those of us in 4500lbs cars on 295 street tires don't have a lot of options.
Not mad, no one got hurt, but it cost me a lap. Speed safe guys.

The locker on my car was a great cure for the issues I was having at the time (lifting the onside rear tire). Now that I have cured that issue with other methods, the locker is now a bit of a nuisance. It still does a lot of good things but especially with the way I drive it while autocrossing (left foot trail braking) it stays bound up then when it finally releases it bangs real hard and can upset the car.
Much like Darrel did on PacMan last weekend, I just drive around it for now. My issue is not as bad as he dealt with but at some point I'd like to try something different once again.

Dan, right? This was a combo of HPDE4 and TT, passing anywhere on track. I’d be willing to bet if the winged BMW hadn’t yielded he would have been on that same line. IMO you left that wide open, especially for a lighter car with the ability to late brake. 4500lb cars on 295’s take different lines then the e30 in front of you, the BMW behind you and obviously a TT car. Looked clean to me.
A couple of those run groups looked like a complete cluster F, surprised there weren’t more incidents.

What did Darrell say about the turn 11 pass?
With 100 cars on track and full open passing I don't know how you couldn't expect to see attempted passes there... and pretty much everywhere. :)

Dan,
I know what you’re saying but....
NASA can fix that by putting the proper groups on track..... they made it nearly impossible to be able to get any clean runs. We’re out there trying to get fast lap - while others are out parading.
In the TT classes — Which require comp licenses — you are supposed to be aware of faster cars on track at all times.
I agree — as the rules go - he was NOT past your door yet and you were turning in.... but as rules go - we all know “stuff” happens pretty quick out there and sometimes it’s hard to react. You did have a very wide line in to that turn which left the door open so to speak...

I run with Checkered flag racing.. one race group, one group A
which most can run in the race group as they are that fast
and no point byes and one group B with point byes
Most of the time it is 20-30 cars max with lots of open space
They are a great bunch of guys and run Laguna, Sears and
Thunderhill... guests are invited but most can get in
My viper buddy likes to start at the back of the pack
and run thru the group.. I do that with him but prefer
to start at the front and get a clean track until you hit
the lappers
I did the parking lot running with Shelby Club for a while
and finally went with these guys.... besides the founding
fathers 25 years back were all Pantera owners (best people
in the world:).. they go nuts when a few of us current Pantera
owners show up

I've been around this crap for a long time, run 10 or so different road courses. I have to say Nasa @ Sonoma is a bit of a cluster. So many cars on track, that they end up with cars stopped on track in grid, while cars have made a full lap, and are coming back around to grid hot. You add having TT and HPDE on at the same time, reminded me of the DC beltway.
Craziest thing I've ever seen, yeah I'll pass on that. I understand having to keep the sessions full to be profitable, but that was ridiculous.

Greg's comment about not mixing HPDE with TT in the same group is spot on. However, NASA groups the rules for the two groups (HPDE/TT) in the same section of the rule book and currently there is only one comment about passing - "6. The driver attempting to make a pass is solely responsible for safe outcome of that pass. Drivers making a pass should be certain that the driver ahead of them can see them before attempting to pass." The guidance regarding what constitutes a safe "racing" pass (past the door, etc.) is in the competition section, which does not include HPDE or TT; however, after contact in TT I have seen NASA use the competition rules to determine fault. Most NASA HPDE Group 4 briefings include "passing with courtesy" and participants are reminded that the overtaking car cannot take the other car off his line. That is not appropriate for TT cars trying to get a good lap time. The groups should not be mixed!

I will say —- Dan is correct — And I agree with him.... We have to know the rules and there are rules.
Every situation is different - and in the heat of battle - we’re all racers and take an advantage of any situation we can. Some of this is born out of frustration... as I’m sure this weekend was frustrating for many. However — doesn’t make it right. I’ve watched the video a few times in review —- I know myself — had it been me in the seat - I’d have taken that same pass.... 😂
What gets me is that NASA is putting cars out where the delta of lap times is just way too large. I think I now see why there’s so few cars in the upper groups. I noticed on Saturday there were way more TT cars — and they just must have packed up and gone home on Sunday. I now see why. Our plan was to run the two early TT sessions because the third session was TT and HDPE4 and supposedly that put about 100 cars on track. Darrell was smart enough to tell me “I’m not going to waste fuel and tires doing that”.... and I totally agreed. However — even the Sunday TT runs were mostly Miatas! WTF - I don’t care what you do in a Miata — it’s not going to run with almost 700hp. I also noticed the TTU Norma — it seemed to come out — do a couple hot laps and disappear... Given the rules for TT — just set fastest lap - doesn’t matter if it take you one lap or 10... that makes “sense” given the traffic situation. By the time the NORMA (OR US) came around for 2nd and 3rd lap — it put you into a cluster F....
SO what I’m trying to say is —- DAN —- Sorry that happened.... Glad it was you and not someone else. You had the skills to handle it.

No worries guys, you know I've got nothing but love for everyone.
What I did see happen which may have been a learning curve issue for you guys, that group was NOT a TT/HPDE4 mix, what did happen was you guys gridded first and "jumped" the start.
For a detailed explanation....
The first lap is a no passing/"gentleman's agreement" lap usually the sub 1:50 guys are in the front and bunch us up towards the end of the lap, and REALLY bunch us up from 8 to 11 ESPECIALLY at 11.
Unfortunately from what I saw, the pace vehicle pulled in after 10 and Dirt Missile TOOK OFF, hahaha.
We were still bunching, and I was in 10 when I saw the Missile disappear into 2. The regular fast guys hadn't even nailed it out of 11 yet. I knew the Missile was screwed and would be into the TT6&5 cars before they got up to speed and after looking at the video, it looks like I was right.
Easy and honest mistake to make, and the car is stupid fast. Most of the guys on Slicks are out for 2-3 laps tops and pull it in knowing that there's nothing to be done after the traffic jam starts. I'm usually only out for 4-5 laps for the same reason. spec Miatas and e30's become roving chicanes and you're not going to have a good lap.
ALL THAT said, it is always the responsibility of the passer to execute a safe and undisturbed pass without endangering the cars. As a rule of thumb in a non racing class, once the first car in a braking zone's lights come on, overtaking is over. Line up and power out. Great teachable moment and with the wonderful technology of on board cameras and the "Incredible, edible Internet", we can share these teachable moments with everyone. I spoke with the driver afterwards and the track and had a laugh about it. The car ius hard to see and like I said, I knew the E46 was there (and I know the driver and his style/personality), but had it not been for me hearing the Missile banging gears and double checking my mirrors, and subsequently surrendering the corner, that would have been an expensive turn for what was already not going to be the best lap of the day. Risk vs. Reward.
Looking forward to teh next one guys! THill in August, hope to see you there! and Greg... Seriously hope the car is legal for& you're making a push for TTU at NASA Nationals in Sept. Seeing that car on track is nothing short of awesome.

I noticed the exact same thing from up on turn 9 terrace...I remember thinking they should have held the green flag for one more lap to help get everyone bunched up before releasing the hounds.
Are you saying that either way (green then or on the next lap) that it is common courtesy for everyone to stay in line for the first lap after green to get everyone up to speed and warmed up...then try to make your one or two hot laps?
I could see that helping to stem the problems Darrel had all weekend catching the end of the pack too soon, but not sure if it's good or bad for the top third of the faster cars in the group? I always like to get in front of those slower than me before starting my hot lap but I've never been on track with 73 other cars with such wide variations of lap times at the same time so... :waveflag:

I don’t know what class MERC9 runs Bob — but the car is stupid fast — running Sonoma in sub 1.38 —- so faster than the Norma.... He’s 1000hp — and has had years to get the car sorted.
I won’t live long enough to see the match up —- as we’d need to put the power up to 850ish and of course - have time to sort it all.... and I’d love nothing better than to go MERC9 hunting!!

Yes. We are gridded according to best lap times of the weekend, so as long as everyone is bunched well, that SHOULD give the fast guys 2-3 clear laps before they catch the backmarkers.
Looked like it was just a rookie (to Norcal NASA TT) mistake. making the TT meetings throughout the weekend can definitely help with that. We usually do one Saturday and Sunday mornings, first thing (drivers a.m. meeting) and then after the first session. As long as everyone plays/drives well, that'll be it for the weekend. If you guys ever need help, hit me up.

You're almost correct. You actually have it backwards.
PACMAN doesn't belong on track with all of the other cars. The majority of the TT cars at NASA run 1:50 to 2:00+. So a 1:40 car is out of place (and there are only 2 of them there).
This weekend wasn't the preferred group/event to run with. But time was of the essence and it was what it was and the best was made of it.
SCCA in 2 weeks is/was the preferred venue/outing for this car and that is what is on deck.

Sutton knew he was building this car for a dying man - a man that was his friend - that did everything he could to help further his business etc.

Watching the NASCAR Sonoma race. Looks like they are using the full 2.52 mile course, including the carousel: "Sonoma Raceway will return to the circuit's historic 12-turn, 2.52-mile road-course layout for the 2019 Toyota/Save Mart 350 NASCAR weekend". The qualifying times for the field were between a low 1:34 to 1:42. With a little fine tuning and a clear track for a lap time, the Dirt Missile would have been at least mid-pack. Impressive.
Pappy
Edit: The race lap times for the fast cars were generally in the 1:39+ range

The missile with proper chassis ride height, bar and spring rate, aero balance, and shock tuning should be right there. Especially if Darrel is running with similar paced cars.

I agree with this holistically. I ain't a forgiving guy in terms of maliciousness. There's a grave and distinct difference in $200, $2,000, $20,000 and $200,000. When the amount gets large enough on the other side of that pendulum, ain't no forgiving and praying. I'm sure we all can imagine how much money Greg paid Ron. While 200k is a bunch of money, this was less about money and more about time. Someone knowingly taking advantage of situation, knowing the importance of that Time for the sake of money and ego is a very special kind of asshole, whom truly has a special place in a hell.
Robbing people of money, sure.. at some point forgiveness and moving on is important, because it is just money. but that’s not the core of the betrayal here in my opinion, Greg lost time, and all the money in the world can’t buy more and that’s not something that should be forgiven
I hope I didn’t speak out of hand, just my interpretation of the events

I know this is going to sound sappy, but I teared up a bit thinking about the relief and sense of pride thus must have given Greg.
It also feeds the heart and soul of those who helped right this wrong or supported from afar.
Well done everyone :king:

Wonder what's happening today? Watching Race Hero, it showed Darrell starting 3rd (based on qualifying time), but when the race started neither he nor the GT2 car that qualified first completed a lap. Hopefully it's just a transponder problem. Anybody know?

Power steering pump fractured during qualifying on lap two or three, his time was good for 3rd on the race grid. Pump didn't get replaced..... DNS.
Greg figured the auto-blip timing on the sequential may be causing enough violent belt lash that it caused the issue.
GW is a master of troubleshooting in my book, his mind is amazing when it comes to analyzing mechanical and electrical situations. :hail:

A little different perspective..... from the BMW’s rear camera... I had to chop 23 minutes of the 26 minute video — since we led that much of the race. LOL

what kind of BMW was able to hang with the Missile?
There were some quick little 3 series race cars that were putting down some good times at the NASA event. Also, remember that the Dirt Missile isn't fully sorted and is running in the mid to low 1:40s at Sonoma right now, which is quick, but there are still a good amount of cars that can pull off those lap times. Once Greg and team have a chance to make a few of the proposed changes by Darrell Anderson, it might be good for high 1:30s, which a lot less cars could keep up with...

Our SCCA run group was “led” by a GT2 Corvette — a super nice one built for the world challenge - it kicked our buts running 1:39’s but he dropped out about 2nd lap in .....
Dave Gordon or Rob Dickey may have gotten pics of the BMW (SCCA ITE class). We seemed to be neck and neck in qualifying and the actual races. I have more video to post.

This. It's a bad ass little sorted wide body. Driven by a very capable driver. It dominates the local ITE class right now from what I can see.

Greg, what does the car weigh and are there any places where you think reductions can be made? I'm about to wear out my hole saw on my car. LOL Thanks.

I really liked the updates and shop talk. I'm going to miss it. I heard of Gregs passing on muscle car place and again on Facebook. For those close to him I apologise for your loss. I also lost my dad to cancer what will be a year ago Monday. It's inspiring how Greg stuck with it and saw this car and his goals through against the odds.
