A vise would work...if I had one. I've added some tools and will be adding a few more as the process continues. As for the boots.....send em! Also send what's in them.

I do enough damage with a wire wheel. Pretty sure I'm the last guy that should be doing any type of welding. :weld:

You're mistake is thinking that I'd be the one to move out. Let's hope that whatever comes in those boots knows how to use a broom and make a sandwich cause that ain't happenin around here at the moment.

That's a very good question and one I wish I had an answer to. 2018 is going to be a busy year for me on a few fronts. Add to that there are a some things I am unable to do myself, like building up the engine. Jeff will help me with that, but his shop is taking off and he has limited time. I'll roll the cover off it now and then and tinker a little, but nothing big will happen till late Spring or mid Summer. Sucks, but....that's life.

Assembly of the LS7 power plant has begun. I have never built up an engine before, but always wanted to. I am lucky that Jeff is really good at this and has the patients to teach and assist me. It's not over complex (so far), but there is more to it than I thought. So far it's been a lot of fun and I find it oddly therapeutic. Once the engine is built up and ready to go, Jeff and I will install it along with a few other items. There is no time line or hurry, but It won't be forever.

I always have a good time af Jeff’s place but building this is kick. I don’t recall exactly what the floor is covered with. It’s a very durable industrial product. We applied it with a squegie and then we clear coated over the top. Maybe Jeff will chime in and let you know.

Dhutton...What is the story on the Orange Z28 ?
That is an ultra rare Z28 with factory air conditioning. :D.
It’s just a clone that sat outside for many years. I dragged it home as a builder. Seller did believe it was a real Z28 and it took some time to convince him otherwise....

Things have been nuts on this and the car has been on the back burner for to long. With a few items off my plate and the overwhelming need for therapy :sieg: I am working on the car. It's not huge progress, but it's progress and I'll take every little bit I can get these days.
This is pretty much where we left things a few months ago. Jeff has been a great teacher and I can not express how much I have enjoyed building the engine or Jeffs help.

We took advantage of the extra muscle standing around (people) and got my engine off the stand. I installed the clutch and then we married up the transmission.
https://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-HKsTKmc/0/3a3b9867/L/i-HKsTKmc-L.jpg
In preparation for the install I had to drill a hole in the firewall for the engine harness. I tried to get Jeff to do this. He pretty much laughed and told me to man up. This is what I get for putting the cart in front of the horse and not mocking everything up before paint and body. I'm sure Jim in cringing right now. :twak:

Keeping it fun is the key! Not putting a deadline on things has helped for sure and I finally understand why so many people build car after car. More people need to do this. It's a positive on so many levels.
Wish I had that level of understanding with my employer. Sounds like you have some good leadership.

Installed the headers and some of the accessorizes yesterday. So far I am pleased with the way things are turning out. I went with the Art Morrison ceramic coated headers and really like the way they fit. My last 67 drug over the smallest of speed bumps. Soooo annoying! The exhaust should tuck up nice and tight.
Now....if I could only find the AC bracket. :knock:

I went with the Art Morrison ceramic coated headers and really like the way they fit. My last 67 drug over the smallest of speed bumps. Soooo annoying! The exhaust should tuck up nice and tight.
Now....if I could only find the AC bracket. :knock:

The headers look great on there. We have pot holes where we loose Mini Coopers in around here so we need them to be nice and tight like those. Looking good.
Is that a GM front drive kit or is it Holley? If it's Holley could you measure from the bolt at the top of the Alt to the bolt in the head behind the power steering reservoir? I need more room between my Alt and valve cover. Thanks

That ground clearance on those headers is great, car is looking great:trophy-1302:
Thanks. According to Craig AME bolted a plywood to the bottom of the frame when designing them to insure they fit nice and tight. Hopefully I can keep it all tucked up above the bottom of the frame.
Looking Great Curtis! Can't wait for a ride when I'm in Vegas in November!
Not sure it will be done by then, but I'll do my best!!
Curtis, for a moment there I thought you were getting a Divorce from that car of yours after an earlier post, something about 'the b*#ch is pissing me off'.
Nice to see you're back on track, heck that car of yours is starting to look too nice to drive. :o
Just kidding.......keep up the good work!

Heck no! Just to much on my plate. Sold the house, moved, over worked, etc. Just to busy. Things are moving along for now. I'll have to stop at some point and save up some $$ to finish it, but that's alright.

Seems like good use of a Mini Cooper to me. It's the GM Vette setup. I would like to get one of those Gucci kits at some point. :G-Dub:

When I installed mine, I missed the Note which states... Due to manufacturing tolerances, this area may need to be trimmed in some applications. We had the engine about 1/4" from being right where it needed to be to bolt in and found the mounts where touching the frame. This caused a bit of a head scratching for a few till I revisited the instructions. It was a pain, but we removed, trimmed and reinstalled the mounts. Everything lined up perfectly and fit without issue.

Other than the headlight assembly going in....Nope. Like Jeff said my work schedule as gotten to be stupid. To give you an idea, the company has 42 pilot slots and as of last Monday had 10 vacancy's. Well.....Friday two more left and two more (that I know of) have interviews this month. So getting back to a regular schedule probably won't happen anytime soon.

I hear you Curtis, we are trying to hire more pilots also. Luckily as an junior FE, I am guaranteed trips to all of the worlds garden spots lol. 4 of out 6 months have been in Africa. Head back in 11 days. My schedule has been 22ish days on and anywhere from 10-24 days off in between. If you know of any guys that are interested in 121 flying (no pax complaining) send them my way. Are you guys required to live in LV? Might have a guy for you.

Small update: I had an extended weekend and was able to install the Ricks Stainless tank and the C&R Radiator. Nice to have these big items installed. Not only does it bring my vision into reality, but it also gets a few more big boxes out of the way. The engine compartment is turning out better than expected...so far. Next will be to install the oil tank. It's been slow progress and frustrating, but it's worth it.

I'd love to have one. Thought about painting what I have black, but decided against it. I may swap it all out at some point, if and when I have the $$$$$ to do it. I'd prefer to get the interior done first though and that's not going to be cheap. I need a little more stainless hardware in a few spots under the hood IMO. Just the visible spots.

Kinda wild how much it improves the looks of everything. Getting it installed without scratching everything up was my biggest concern. Thankfully Jeff was there to provided an extra set of hands and insure it all went smoothly.
I didn't realize just how far into the deep end of the pool I went with this build. Jim (the painter) helped push it there. While I absolutely love how things are turning out, it would have been smart to build one to a lesser level before taking this on. Jeff constantly has customer cars in and out of his shop which helps further my education. It's mainly the little things that result in a smart, clean build and a lot of tips and trick on how to. He always has an answer and isn't afraid to stop me before I do something that would result in a negative outcome.
Having friends who are willing and able to share/assist in helping me achieve my goal has been the best part about the build. I like to say that building a car takes you on a journey long before it takes you for a ride.

Nice to know people think about me.... well the car anyways. :stirthepot:
Harness from CROW Enterprises arrived today. Went with the "Dog Bone" option to insure the straps didn't rub against me neck. The width between the uprights on the headrest was 9" inside to inside and each strap is 3". Looks like it was the right way to go. Won't know for sure till they're in the car and I'm wearing them.
Few boxes of random parts arrived yesterday and an order from The Shop LLC the day before that.
Once I'm able to get at the car, I plan to spend every min I can working on it. It's getting close... I think.

I like to say “Old cars take you on a journey, long before they take you for a ride”. It’s been a learning lesson along the way and I’m glad I’ve travelled this road. I’m ready to turn the key, that’s for sure. It will be interesting to once again drive a car that is missing so many of the things we take for granted in modern cars. Traction control, ABS, Airbags, blindspot warnings, backup camera, etc. it’ll take a min to get back to those basics. It’s something I am actually looking forward to. Speed bumps will once again be a concern! Should be fun.

The car has been at MuscleRodz with Mike. The goal was to have Mike knock out the bigger and more time consuming items and have it returned running and capable of being on the road. We all know that's not a simple task and that it's never a good idea to send a builder a car in boxes. Mike took it on and has done his best to complete the car the way I want it done and on the level he knows I am aiming for. Not easy, but it appears he's done a good job. Here's a little update and of course there will be more to come when the car arrives... tomorrow. :headspin:

The week of SEMA is always a busy one for me. Work prevented me from attending the show, but I still made time to meetup with friends. I had planned to tag along with Adrianne and drive GW's truck back to Scottsdale Saturday after SEMA. The truck made it as far as breakfast. The hose from from power steering pump blew right out of the fitting and all the fluid was gone.
https://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-pNGZDZv/0/54486d00/L/i-pNGZDZv-L.jpg
Adrianne decided to call Pilot Transport and have the car hauled to a trusted shop in the PHX area rather than hunt around all day and deal with an unknown. I'm not sure who she called at Pilot, but one of their rigs arrived within an hour and snatched up the truck. You can't even get a Tow truck out here that fast.

She grabbed her bags and we called UBER.
https://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-xm4XxmM/0/abbc44cd/L/i-xm4XxmM-L.jpg
She asked if I wanted to head out to OPTIMA and hang with Blake, Jay and the crew from Speedtech. Yeah... always! She insisted we take the Camaro and I was more than happy to do so. We bolted the passenger seat in and headed out. Reaching the track we rolled in like we owned the place and no one questioned it. It was a great afternoon and proof that "there are not bad days, only lesser gooder days". We had a lot of fun to say the least.

Once Adrianne was on a plane and head home it was time to go full throttle on the car. Sadly Mike didn't have enough time to complete everything on my list or do any real shake down. Not what he prefers, but it was what it was. I really wanted to take the car to Scottsdale for Gregs memorial and attend the GoodGuys show with Adrianne. It was a lot of work and I didn't get everything I wanted accomplished, but it was road worthy.
First up was having the Tune redone. Mike is looking into what happened with the Tuner he used and I know he will get to the bottom of things. Revolution Race Works here in Las Vegas scrapped the tune in the car and started with a fresh LS7 file. Seven hours later, it ran the way it should. Night and day difference. Sorry... no Dyno video this time.
https://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-5fLrPq5/0/b518d0df/L/i-5fLrPq5-L.jpg
After a nose to tail check of things with the car on the lift I set to cleaning up the wiring that still needs to be completed. Stereo, Truck Release, etc. It looks worse than it is. The VA is in, but the AC needs to be charged. Also I still need to install the Stereo so Mike left the vent hoses disconnected at my request. Just easier to get under there and get at stuff.
https://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-Mpjwnkm/0/0b334787/L/i-Mpjwnkm-L.jpg
Once that was accomplished I set to laying down Dynamat and Dynaliner. I wanted to carpet the entire car and get the back seat in. Ran into a couple of snags though. First was the discovering that the new back seat I had bought four years ago and just left in the box was... for a Vert. :buttkick: Second was time! So front seats, front carpet and a panel to close up the backseat to trunk area would have to do.

Door panels, Door seal plates and the Glove Box Door and that was it for interior. I actually had to barrow a shifter handle from Jeff. :lmao:

11-18-2019, 05:50 PM
Jeff and I changed the oil and check all the fluids and I called it a night. It all looked good to go and I was headed out the next morning. The car had almost 200 miles on it. With no wipers, no spare, no heat or AC... what could go wrong!? Besides... I've got AAA. :peepwall:
I was up early the following morning. While Laurie dropped Kevin (the dog) off at the sitters, I packed the car. Just a few tools, two chairs, some detail supplies and our bags and the car was full.
Letting her warm up a little before we left.
96-arZs49SE
All strapped in and ready to go. I have to give Laurie mad props here. She worked a 10 hour shift the night before and drove for four hours to Scottsdale in a less than quiet car. She's trooper.

https://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-5FzhDkD/0/0195c1aa/L/i-5FzhDkD-L.jpg
Once we arrived Laurie called it and went to bed as soon as we checked into the hotel. I headed over to Welds place and after dinner left the car there. Adrianne had a crew come by super early to clean and detail the car. It was nice to have coffee with Gwen before heading over to GoodGuys.
https://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-3WPKXZS/0/a34763da/L/i-3WPKXZS-L.jpg
With the car all cleaned up we headed over to the show to meet Adrianne. She had us park in the "Builders Choice" area. Having never taken a car to a show before I just did what I was told. I had to fill out an entry form to park there, but whatever. I was in good company and hanging with Adrianne and Basher.
If there was ever any doubt...

Upon return from watching Autocross and looking at cars we found this in the passenger seat. At first I thought someone had thrown a flyer in the car and was annoyed. Then I thought Adrianne and Basher where playing a joke on me. There's no way a car that's obviously missing interior parts and the trim around the headlight doors would be selected. Adrianne was nice enough to point out that I was probably the only car rolling on Forglines. :poke: That girl cracks me up!!

Such an amazing week at Sema with dad’s 40. Even though Curtis and I couldn’t make the road trip back home we made the most of the day @ Optima. So much fun being in his garage working on the camero to get it out there.
He did look at me to tell me that he could just hear Dad yelling at him to put the seat belts in, but I called him a ***** and we rolled without them.

It was like riding inside a beer can without the interior. I still don’t have a full interior, but as I get more and more in there it’s improving rapidly. The Dynamat and Dynaliner make a big diff! You can actually carry on a conversation while driving now. I’m not going to run a rear seat, but whatever I come up with will be well insulated.

Thank You. As you all know, I had a lot of help with the build. Jim doing the paint and body to an over the top level, Jeff advising/assisting/teaching on assembly and Mike on wiring/plumbing/etc. I'm basically just an idea guy who has some kick azz friends.

That's just Eastwoods Hot Rod satin black. If you use it, painting everything at the same time is a good idea. There are very small difference in a few areas due to not doing this. You really have to look though.

Those are from Ring Brothers as are the hood hinge, door strikers, shifter and cigarette "Eject" button. You'll finish it! Hopefully we will be seeing your photos like these here sooner than later.

That setup is by NRG. I like it for a few reasons. Taking the steering wheel with you is a theft preventative, The steering wheel stands off the dash perfectly (for me) and I don't need the tilt (though I have it), You can set the steering wheel on the dash at car shows and listen to people make comments like "It's a total race car".

Nowhere near as trick as the NRG set up though from what I can see. I take some comfort in knowing it reduces the risk of theft of my 442, but nothing can stop a flat bed tow truck (DOH). I also park way off in an empty corner of a parking lot, crank my steering all the way full left to thwart being dragged up a flat bed, and set my emergency brake. I still bite my nails when I don't see my car, and enjoy a huge sigh of relief when I come back outside to still see my car there. That constant threat of theft has drastically reduced the miles I put on my car.
If I had known that NRG also offered a removable steering wheel set up, I may have gone that direction as the Grant version has it's merits, but it's a mass produced item with a quality level of a 9 out of 10.

I have walked up on some people checking out my 442 and they do flip and trip over the super rare Legendary Hurst Lightning Rods along with the steering wheel removed. They want to call them Ram Rods, and some even ask if that's a Lenco? They are cool to look at and fun to occasionally play with, but the Holley Terminator EFI controlled GM Performance 4L85E does such a great job that I just plunk it into drive and have programmed it to do everything I want without having to ever really touch the shifter. I actually mostly use all of the rods just to do some occasional manual downshifts getting off the highway, or hold it in second while challenging some of the twisty winding roads around here. Once in a great while I will find myself in a street race (who, me?) That's when I use the true function of the Lightning Rods to hold each shift about 500 RPM higher than the programmed set points and bang shift my way through the pass. Funny that most also ask me if it's got the 442 engine - I usually just say yeah just to leave it be. (there is actually a '70 W30 442 455 engine in it that's been heavily massaged to 488 cubes as my little secret weapon) 8 liters is just SO much better than five. Yeah, yeah, - it's all stock LOL (until I open the remote key fob exhaust dumps right before I make a pass - that's when they know they've been had). Someday I'll get it over to a chassis dyno - 'til then, dunno, but it smokes the tires violently to all hell at a 30 roll if you just stand on it instead of easing into it... (damn ass telephone pole / ditch hunter). If any body else dare asks to drive it (like my daughter or son in law), I swap in the alternate fully castrated tune in it and they still come back all starry eyed. I wish I was over in your area and we could go see how much trouble we could get into chasing each other around, though it would probably end up with me in a ditch until I do something about my severe traction issues...

Sounds like the car is setup right and yeah... some days there just isn’t enough tire out back. I’d probably be in the ditch right next to you  Wishing I would have tried to stuff a 315 under the back of my car. I didn’t want any rubbing issues and went conservative with a 305. Oh well. Next time.
Speaking of “spirited driving”. There’s a group out here called the breakFAST club. It’s primarily Porsche, Ferreira and other Exotics in the group but open to anyone. They invited me to an early AM run Sunday through Red Rock Canyon. Breakfast to follow. Seems like a pretty good bunch. Then again maybe they are just looking to pick on some American Muscle. should be fun regardless.

I say go run with the "imports" Sunday morning and have a blast. Since you are somewhat new to your build and vice a versa, you will be racing yourself and the road more than the other cars around you. Once you become a "Stielow behind the wheel", then you can show the import boyz how it's really done. Real cars have rock chips, but see if you can keep from eating grass, well, you say canyon which raises the stakes MUCH higher - your pilots license doesn't work in a car (DOH) :shakehead: I did some Corvette canyon carving a few years ago in the mountains of Arizona and found road dust and sand to "make my heart skip a beat and also grease my seat", so let some drivers run ahead of you to see if they happen across anything before you do as an early warning. Always remember to ease into all of your maneuvers so as not to upset your chassis / traction unpredictably - brakes, steering, throttle... You may have to pull over and change your brake proportioning setting a bit too, as hot brakes in a canyon run will be completely different than most other "normal circumstances". Hmmm, sorry about rambling on about how to drive - you are just going out to have fun! Those high dollar "imports" don't want to hurt their cars either, so I'm sure you will hang with them just fine.
As far as 305 versus 315 tire tread width? 10 little millimeters? Not worth the trouble. Many don't know this, but as your tires wear, the contact patch width widens considerably. By the time you are halfway through your rear tires, they will probably measure out at 315 +/- anyway. Have you ever heard of certain class racers purposely sending their tires out to be shaved? Yep - they carefully cut more than half the tread off of a perfectly brand new tire to reduce "tread squirm", lighten up the tires for less unsprung weight, and also makes the tread area measurably wider (while still staying within the rules for their class). In your case, a few good burn outs can do this too, but spray some PAM no stick cooking oil on your rear quarter panels first and have the video camera rollin' while those dollar bills literally go up in smoke

A lot's happened in the last few weeks for all of us. Life changing in ways that we are just starting to get a glimps of. With strange days ahead, I hope "stressed out" doesn't become a theme song for all of us.
Before all the craziness broke out, I was invited to join a group called the breakFAST club and so far, it's been a lot of fun. My first outing was a few laps through the Red Rock scenic loop. On that day we had a Lamborghini, McClaren, GT3 RS, NSX and a couple of TESLAs. Great bunch of guys and some really cool cars. It was crazy early, but we had to beat the traffic and it was worth it. Lot's of twisty sections and a few decent straight aways. Fun spirited driving, but not the kind of place anyone could really pull on me. My high speed was 103. I have to admit, it was a lot more fun than I expected and the crew didn't even bat an eye when I rolled in. Then again I don't think they expected much from me. After the drive we cruised to a local cafe for breakfast. Not a bad way to spend an early Sunday morning.

The following week I went to a meet I spotted on Instagram. It looked like all tuners, so I sent them a message and was told it was for everyone and to please come out. So I did and.... it was all Tuner cars. Nice group and it was fun to see something different. I was surprised at the number of people taking photos with really nice cameras. Even more surprised when girls started climbing on hoods of cars! I was about to leave when I was asked if a gal could pose with my car. I agreed, but told them no climbing on the cars. The model proceeded to tell me she would never as she love Camaro's and how she had helped her Dad restore a 70. She gave a lot of details and turned out to be a big fan of muscle cars. Have to admit I was a bit surprised. She was very respectful of the car and the pics turned out decent.

This past weekend the breakFAST club had a run around Lake Mead. Epic event! There where 20 cars, mostly Porsche and some high end ones to. I got a lot of strange looks as people arrived. I figured I'd hang at the back of the pack and see what happened. Yeah... I ended up at the front some how. I suppose that pushed me, in a good way, and everything went smooth. I even passed a few guys. I'll admit to being a bit shy in some of the tight turns, but I'm still getting used to the car in that type of driving. At one point a bunch of us got stuck behind a Motor Home and had to wait to pass. When it was finally clear and I got by, the road quickly opened up to a long straight stretch. I sucked in the lead cars a lot quicker than I expected. Just before I lifted, I glanced down and saw 132 mph. Scared me a little, but the Blonde sitting in the passenger seat seemed just fine with it. :lostmarbles: I kept it under 120 the rest of the trip. We finished up the run with a drive down the Las Vegas Strip. Really weird to see everything shut down. :shakehead:

With all of the car gatherings cancelled till further notice, I'll probably do a few more of these. It's a good time and I have to admit I do enjoy seeing the confusion on peoples faces when I keep up with our pass them. The car has become popular and a few of the drivers are talking about getting a PT car now that they understand it.
Thanks for looking. Be safe my friends and remember.... No One is Coming, It's Up to Us.
