I get the "having a hot rod again" thing. Mine's been garage blockage for two years now. Renting go karts at the track down the road kind of helps with the adrenaline kick, since I don't have a Porsche in the garage, but living on a super-awesome road (Google Salmon Falls Road in Pilot Hill/El Dorado Hills) creates a need situation that can only be fixed with a real car that really gets it.

So we say soon . . .

Dude, we have the same gas tank!

Truer words were never spoken Wayne!! Progress is so glorious!

I just want it done so I can go enjoy having a hot rod again. Being carless (other than the track crap) sucks! I truly don't know how people spend years looking at their cars and not having them done. I'd go crazy.

Catching up on this thread after a few days...

Salt Flat wheels wouldn't look bad either.

Artillery wheels will look bad ass! Those Salt Flat wheels are really nice too.

Hijack regarding that truck photo from Speed is the New Black: I love what CCS did with the '62 'vette on the Roadster Shop chassis, except how they painted every part of the engine that glaring red.

Your's is coming along very nicely! I love it!

Funny about the gas tank -- since I didn't order it (one of the downsides to having stuff pro built) I don't know what it is.....

Progress is always a good thing. My car has been gone since mid 2014. I drove it a handful of times before we tore it apart. Can't wait!

I don't know -- I just pay the bill.....

LOL

Yes --- this is a real tight engine space - not much room there to sneak stuff that's up front back past the headers and all that heat. These old cars are pretty f'n narrow in the snout!

Rear glass fenders are coming off and the "bad/unrepairable" steel fenders are going on. CHRA says the rear fenders only need a few hours work in order to be used. Funny huh!?

I no longer like the Steve Moal gas cap. So that's also going away.

Also the LS3 is out and a new Don Hardy Race Engines in the 500 ish HP range is going in. Maybe a few surprises there too.

The darkest grey there ---- with the beltline done in mat black and then pinstriped --- Wheels (they're billet) will be polished hoop - mat black "spokes" with the spacer gloss black -- polished poverty cap.

Engine compartment will be a few tone on tone - mat and gloss.....

Wayne --- there's a "couple" in every group aren't there. Funny -- 3 years ago the truck was at Pinkee's -- and these two managed to squeeze in to the cab... and here we are again.

Don Hardy built the LS motor in my '33 hiboy..... a 480HP version. Motor was awesome!

And yes --- we're all hot rodders.... and "Stock" just doesn't do it for us.

Day one on the tour I was driving 700HP ---- Day 2 thru til the end I was driving a RamJet 350..... I can tell you with certainty that I like the 700HP WAY better. By the time we got to Austin (Andice) I'd already made up my mind that 430HP wasn't going to get it done. LOL

Thanks Joe!

I'm trying to build the truck to "appear" at first glance -- rather "stock"..... so if you just saw it running down the road - someone might say "look at that cute old truck" --- but to people that really "see it" --- they're going to have to walk over and take a look.... or if they hear it -- they're going to have to come see what the hell is going on there..... LOL

Personally I think the wheels make the look.

I'm also building this to be a daily driver --- so all of that plays into what I'm trying to accomplish. Have it be "playful" but daily driveability... so simple paint (repairable) - simple systems - parts I can get on a road trip (starters and alternators and bearings etc).

Love this old truck
Also glad you figured out you want the hp
My old farm truck with patina was just supposed to
be an old beater driver. Now I am thinking out with
the small block and in with the billet crank destroked
Pontiac 455 that is now 440 inches. Big torque monster
Then do a tubular updated suspension etc

I guess us old hot rodders can't leave things alone:)

The tire fits inside the fender only --- it's "okay" widthwise but it's not pro-poser-touring. I'd personally like to see a 315 back there - but then you either chop in to the bed ---- or widen the fender and that starts to get ugly. As a daily driver - more than anything else - it'll be fine.

Thanks Trey!

This shop has just been excellent to work with. They contact me with any question.... they bill - in detail - every 2 weeks - there are no surprises - and they have great ideas and totally seem to get the direction. So refreshing!

Pinkee's never asked me anything - mostly because - you'd actually have to be working on it once in awhile to have any questions! Only time I ever heard from them was when he wanted more money. LOL Took me asking several times to get a billing statement - and then it was just some phoney made up BS.

There's been more work done on the truck since JUNE than was done in the last 2 years! Mike told me it's only a couple months away from going to paint.

The shop was a stop on our Good-Guys tour and they fed us as well as gave us a tour. Amazing shop. Well equipped and well run. Harold and Tracy the owners are friends of mine. Harold said he opened the shop because he was tired of getting ripped off by other shops. It looks like he has hired a good crew. Harold isn't gong to bill you because he needs the money. He doesn't need the money. He has plenty of his own projects. If there is a lull in customer projects he has the crew work on his to keep them busy. One of the nicer shops and car collections I have seen. Try not to screw this up Greg...........:bigun2:

One of the things that drives me crazy is the shops that think they have years to finish something. When you get my build - you better jump on it immediately and it best be finished in 2 years or less. A shop is not going to have to wait for money, or for me to make decisions.... If I have to wait on them - or they try to play cute - or feed me some BS about how long "X" takes to do (I've personally done just about everything on a car many times!). The other no no - try to build something I don't want. I'm very clear with what direction I'm going. If you have cool ideas - I'm the first guy to listen.... but if a shop wants to go their direction and not listen to me. Bye bye. LOL Remember that I was trying to die during this project -- so there was a year or so there when projects weren't important. So this one has taken longer because of that - but mostly it's taken longer because I should have pulled it after the first year....

Excellent vision turned reality. The truck is looking fantastic. I'm glad you found the right shop to build it for you. This looks like it will be a lot of fun.

Thank you! The vision is pretty simple - a nice daily driver that appears to be pretty stock while running down the road. However - running down the road with Lillard, Steilow, and Capen.... that kind of "running", is running Mach 1 !! So the "guts" of the build have to be solidly capable!! LOL

Thank you! The vision is pretty simple - a nice daily driver that appears to be pretty stock while running down the road. However - running down the road with Lillard, Steilow, and Capen.... that kind of "running", is running Mach 1 !! So the "guts" of the build have to be solidly capable!! LOL

Next year might be Mach 2!

I love it Greg. I've seen a few cars with that color and it's awesome. Black wheels and bronze colored wheels really go well with the color if you ask me. I say do it!! Dodge calls their color like that "Destroyer Grey." You may want to look at that shade too. They reason why I love it is because colors back in the day were flat and didn't have metallic, pearls, etc. and weren't too many options in a color choice, period. Therefore, it is only befitting to put a flat color on such an awesome truck.

We took the color and tweaked it.... so it's not exactly that color anymore but close.

And I'm 100% in agreement --- I want the truck to be 40/50's color. I'm never a fan of these 40's builds with hitech colors and rubberband tires. My goal has been to keep it fairly period looking - but updated modern driving/running etc. A guy is going to have to really "look" to find the details. I'm not trying to build a show car at all.... or a magazine build. It's just my nice old daily driver and I live in Idaho. LOL

Greg, Beautiful truck by the way, very well exucuted. If you are considering a silver color I would highly suggest taking the time to do a little spray out of a 1963 Pontiac Super Duty Swiss Cheese Catalina color called "Sterling Silver", without question the most stunning color I have ever seen. In the natural sunlight it is beyond words. You owe it to yourself to see this color in the sun if you are considering a silver. If you need the paint code or any information I have it and can forward it to you.

One of my favorite cars - '60's Pontiacs. Buddy had a navy blue one in high school --- with the bolt on wheels. Loved that car. Especially with a girl named Kiki Love in the back seat.... LOL

I don't want a metallic paint on the truck.... it'll be a solid color. The paint color we are working with is a custom -- and the Audi Nardo is only "close".... but the color changed with light. It was sprayed out on those clear body samples the paint companies use... and it went light to dark with the curves.

Love these Camaro shots --- and in these pics you can see what the right color "grey" does with the body lines.... Battleship grey doesn't do that - but the right greys do.

So a bit unrelated but close enough in topic to mention. The first time I was in Sun Valley I fell in love with a Blue/Grey Sprinter that was in town, now everytime I see that color I think how good it'd look on an old car. Next time you're running around town I'm sure you'll see one, or five.

This is pulled from the web, the color really needs to be seen in person.

The original 36-40 ford gray was much like machinery gray and has a completely different tone than sealer does. I think as a single stage it would look great using an original color. This 36 has had one partial repaint. The original color is about half shade darker.

Funny that I was looking for color ideas (Originally it was going to be 1957 Porsche Stone Grey).... and the 1940 Ford Pickup color of FOLKSTONE GRAY popped up.... but like the TEAL colors on restored GM 50's cars --- there's 700 shades of them - from light to dark. That particular original color - when you search for cars using it - runs from a light tan to a dark gray and everywhere in between.

Mostly what I decided against -- was anything with a green/brown tone in it.... I want it a bit more modern.... "cleaner" if you will. The guys at the shop picked out several and had them there to look at and they had added some tint or whatever to make it "better" / or "worse" if you're name starts with a "C" like Crap or....

I get how important color is.... but whatever someone chooses it has to be what they like, or love. I used to sell Brown Jordan patio furniture (wholesaler)----- and I used to tell the consumer that very thing when I'd do a "trunk show"..... just buy the set in the color that you want! As long as you do that - you'll love it. Buy the set the way your friends want - and you'll always be kicking yourself for not getting the one you wanted. If you want a red Corvette -- then get it! Bruce Leven was a personal friend of mine for about 20 years.... he was an amazing man and lived one hell of a life.

Sadly -- we shared a couple things the last couple years. He was the one that talked me into having the truck built at Pinkee's..... and about a year or so ago was diagnosed with lung cancer. Yep -- he smoked about 3 packs a day....

For the last 6 months - we talked every other day or so.... sometimes late into the night... and given our death sentences - had much to discuss. Sadly -- only near the end (the last month) was he giving my method a try. But by this time - he was sick from the Chemo and the cancer was roaring.

I will miss him dearly. And think about him daily. I had thought about doing the same exact grey as a tribute to him.... but it's too dark for the lines of the '40. So my gray is modified a bit.

Just a few hours before reading this comment I watched the Jay Leno's Garage segment on Bruce's car, and remembered him saying he wished Bruce well and that he could come back again soon to take Jay for a ride (or something to that effect). Very sorry to hear of his passing. Those were some very kind words you wrote.

I'll bet your truck's paint will look great!

Thank you!!

A further little "story" on my friend Bruce.

It was "tradition" in the summer months - on Saturday afternoons - to head to Issaquah (iss sa kwa) to my buddies Triple X Root beer burger joint.... we could park in the lot next door because the business was closed on the weekends. There might be 6 cars - or 60.... and they came and went - but generally there was some friends there. We'd pull out our folding chairs and sit in the grass berms under the trees and BS for a bit.

One day (as usual) Bruce rolls in... and comes over to join us. He ALWAYS drove something cool - and always drove something different... he had quite a few cars to choose from. It might be his killer Porsche - or an early suburban (converted to late model diesel of course!).... But this particular Saturday he didn't bring a chair. Marv and I offered up our chairs - but he wouldn't have it. He'd just sit in the grass. I reminded him that his ass would be wet when he got up, because it is - after all - the pacific northwest.... and the ground is usually moist. He didn't care - he lit up, and plopped down.

Well -- 3 minutes into it - he jumps up and starts cursing (he cursed - A LOT) - why? Yeah.... because of course now he's soaked thru.

And in his usual way ---- it was my fault.... Oh god we all got a good laugh. And then the stories flowed. He had lots of 'em.

Here's the deal you guys will never understand. This is a man that raced at the highest levels - with the world's finest drivers.... he owned jets.... he owned LARGE yachts.... but... he was one of us. He cursed like a garbage man... his fingers were yellow from smoking.... He was just a hot rodder/car guy... and he LOVED it (coming out to the triple X) because he could be himself. We gave him no mercy - and he gave us none right back. I loved seeing him pull in, because it automatically meant we were going to have some good times.

I've always thought that your "soul" is what you leave behind.... it's the memories that others have of you. That's what lives on. I will never forget the day he sat in the grass... and his reaction. That is a good memory of howling hysterically. The sad ones are of the last few conversations we had about life.... but the good ones prevail. They bring that melancholy smile to me even as my heart sags. It's my loss. He's gone, but it is those of us that are left behind that "feel" for him.

In the end - we discussed our lives. How - in the end - it didn't matter one damn bit what you had.... you'd trade it all for more time. He lived well - he lived large... he did what he wanted and when he wanted... "It" was always going to happen to the other guy. It's very hard to explain unless you've lived it.

True that, Chris! Thanks!

Bruce and I had chats about what our lives were like, and the fact that we could die without regret. The bucket list was pretty "full".... It is your love of life that makes passing so hard. After all, you're going to miss doing more of it! But then again - you think - WTF - life has been good and it's been lived at full speed.

Thanks Dan --- No it will not operate the hood latch -- the hood latch is a modern version (shown in pictures in here somewhere) -- and it has a separate handle. That was the reason for eliminating - or being able to eliminate - the huge factory moldings and release for this slimer less garish garnish. LOL

I like the custom touches to the bed. It's amazing how narrow that hood looks in the shot from the front.

The truck is SMALL ----- as in OMG..... and thanks! When I saw the crude factory bed "end" and the gap ---- I immediately said -- "okay, can we fix that please".

The new mods are nice additions. Funny thing about 40's is how bad most front ends line up, fenders and hood. It takes some real work to get nice gaps there. The cab to bed is another one that in my eye has always needed some attention on this era truck, the mods being done are spot on.

Love the interior color with the exterior, they compliment each other perfectly.

Rock on Greg!

Thanks Glenn! You have no idea how much I've spent on METAL WORK to get this truck right.... I'm not a fan of "get it close and spread some bondo on it"..... There are so many compound curves to deal with. One of the biggest helps IMHO is to put these old clap traps on a real chassis that's stiff enough to hold those nice gaps when you start putting some real life road miles on. That's why I called Phil and Jeremy (The Roadster Shop) and ordered their chassis.... versus bandaging (boxing etc) the old stock chassis. Now it should drive nice and hold up to being a daily driver.

The beauty of moving the truck -- I got a FAR better shop -- and my daughter lives in Austin. Double trouble.

Ken -- it's absolutely amazing how this shop has just plowed forward with not only the job at hand - but their ideas.... They totally grasp the fact that I want to daily drive the truck - but that I am also willing to do "practical" hot rod touches when they make sense.

So far this experience has been equal to working with Roy Brizio on the '33. There is weekly real progress... great ideas... no excuses... and top quality workmanship.

It should be a hoot taking it on the Hall of Fame Tour 2018.... and I'm going to plan to do one or maybe two more of those if Ed will promise to not let Charley sign up. LOL

http://lateral-g.net/forums/attachment.php4?attachmentid=63704&stc=1&d=1510600583

We/They (CHRA) hid the coils -- and this is how they did the holes for the plug wires to come thru.... this is a closeup of the inner fender.... Gotta love little details - even if it's going to be a daily driver!

http://lateral-g.net/forums/attachment.php4?attachmentid=63704&stc=1&d=1510600583

This is the headlight trim chosen --- NOT the headlight! That is just a placeholder..... going to use blacked out Harley lights. I chose the standard trim ring (simple ring) over the DELUXE trim which is far larger.....

http://lateral-g.net/forums/attachment.php4?attachmentid=63706&stc=1&d=1510600856

Given the stance --- they thought they might have to "C" notch the chassis - but as it turns out - they just had to remount the upper shock.

Agree on the headlight rings.... I like 'em just simple. They're not the focus of what I want people to look at. LOL

They were going to notch the Roadster Shop chassis --- then did some work and found it didn't need it to get full travel and the ride height where it sits.

Hasn't really been any work done that is worth the pictures..... it's in that stage of pulling the motor -- it went to Don Hardy Race engines for to get upgraded (to 550hp).... and there's some clean up of where the old seams were (open em up and bring up to quality)... tweaks to what's already been done but needs more work before bodywork. Mounts of various items such as seat belts and stereo parts and pieces (those HUGE McIntosh amps I sent them).... Glass was ordered so that's been being fit in the doors etc.... the tail pan is being built...

So basically - it's in that unexciting stage of disassembly and fit and tweak vs big changes. It's marching forward to be sure! I love this shop! They just are heads down pushing forward.... none of this "builder BS" of sitting on their hands, yet needing more funds!!

I don't know -- can't remember..... I think it was one of those filter regulator styles from GM....

Your house will be fine..... They're never done when they say they will be - and they never cost less... LOL

I like yours too!!! Thanks for the idea!! ETA is sometime to get shakedown miles on it before the September Hall of Fame tour -- which this truck WILL be on.

You are welcome.

I grew up in hot rod household. My dad instilled in me that some of the best mods are the ones that most people never even pick up on.

Mike is right on the money with that quote. I love going to shows and looking at vehicles and finding the "where's Waldo" of modifications.

In my opinion the best mods are the ones that look factory. :)

LOVE all the updates!

BUT I still think the fuel filler needs to be moved to the body line on the fender and it needs to be a "Crafty B" flip filler with a "**** Cancer!" inscription!

FWIW I'll buy it if you'll put it on the truck!

LOL --- you know how much money I have invested in fuel filler caps and fender mods to adapt them?? Never mind.... hahahahahaha

I actually talked to Mike about some custom inscription --- but I just don't go to shows... so don't really give much thought to customizing "for others". But thanks for the offer!

I won't really know until I'm out there Monday Trey - but my guess is --- they pushed it. The shop is on Harolds ranch -- so they're probably just out back of the shop buildings.

It's so close to paint - and the motor was taken out a while ago to go over to Don Hardy's place for a little "upgrading". LOL No real point in putting it back in and then taking it all apart for painting....

I let the shop and Don Jr pick the motor colors..... So I haven't seen that part either. Probably something Charley hates.

Good call Nessy! But I don't think I want it to be a rat rod thing, as much as I love those builds. Had we started out to build it "raw" or Rat look that would be different build - I'd have had them do the body PERFECT - and then clear it... but it was always intended to be painted..... and while the metal work is stellar... it was meant to be covered.

I had a '51 Chevy P/U for Alex.... I was going to build that rat rod style for him to tool around L.A in..... but I gave it to my Sister/Brother in Law (you know Rudy) when I got sick and sold the shop and all my tools.... Too late now - I barely own a crescent wrench these days.

Wow! Very nicely done!!

The front may be sitting a little bit low for me for a "mountain truck daily driver" but then again, Greg's mountain roads are probably a little bit different than any mountain roads I've driven on. ;)

Personally I can't wait to see it painted.

Greg, you should make sure that Charley likes the colors. That way he’ll give you top dollar when you sell it to him, after he nags you about it for a couple years.

Worked on a few things out at the shop today -- and saw a few things 'completed' and in real life for the first time.

Remember I'm not building a show vehicle -- the goal is daily driver - long road tripper - but I also like the process and don't intend to just have a stock looking truck....

So -- the cab is so stinking small.... and with the huge by large McIntosh amps behind the seat - and the battery and some electrical under the seat as well as a couple 6" subs under there..... I needed a place to put things.... In a pickup - that's in the back... but I want to have Gwen put her purse in there - or if I'm going shooting I need secure space and blah blah blah.

I asked them to get a Knack toolbox and cut it down and make it look like an old trunk. It will get all painted up and will have leather "straps" and big buckles etc. Right now - it looks a bit "coffinish".... but will look like a trunk when we're through with it. And it's KNACK TOUGH! And locking. It was sectioned so the whole thing is below the bed rail -- and a tonneau cover goes over all of it. We came up with a trick way to build a tonneau cover framework today -- you'll see later -- but there will be no snaps or anything else like that.

A little "bed rail detail" -- closing up the otherwise open "rolled edge"

The exhaust with electric cut outs - it gets "dumped" at the rear.... not turned out as shown.
