No need for IRS in a simple little daily driver truck.... Simple Ford 9" live axle will work perfectly. Truck should drive like a new car --- nice LS power plant - electronic automatic... Recovery Room interior.... toss in a little A/C and Heat... Give it a good stance (Pinkee's knows stance!). Call it done. LOL

So?? Did they weld it in??
Great plan Greg. I just got a 55 Chevy pickup that my father-in-law had been working on over the years. He passed away last December and told my wife he'd like me to get the truck. Add it to the project list! lol

I seriously never asked Eric (Pinkee's) when it will be done. I know he asked Phil (Roadster Shop) to jump on the chassis so that he can have the body on the chassis when we stop at the shop during the GG Hall of Fame Tour. I also added money to the till... so there's no hold ups there. He will need to order a complete new bed... rear fenders from Wescott... and the motor and trans etc. But none of these builds are done much before a couple years pass. Maybe I'll drive it to the Medicaid office?? LOL

It truly is being built to be my DD. My F-150 is a real nice new pick up... but a cute '40 will fit my lifestyle here in the Valley. Most of my driving is spent under 35 MPH... or the short jaunt down to Hailey to the shop. Stella can ride in the back... I can put a bike rack in the bed... and if we really want to drive somewhere and take luggage and all that - Gwen has a Cayenne GTS that will fill that need. We also have a new Range Rover - but every time I drive it I'm looking at every other vehicle on the road thinking that I'd rather be driving "that" over the RR. It's the Buick of SUV's.

No they did not == despite several emails asking them/telling them - ITS OKAY I'D LIKE IT IN!!
Of course = they're running a business -- not a jokester shop.... and I don't blame Phil for wanting the RS logo in there instead. They are shipping the WELD SUCKS version so I can make wall art out of it.

Yes! The Boys at The Roadster Shop stepped up and delivered the chassis in time for Eric (Pinkee's) to get the body set on it so I could see it on our way to Texas on the Good Guys Hall of Fame Tour... and then I had to cancel that because the '33 began to overheat and I couldn't fix it in time. Well - I could have - but that would have required heroic effort and I'm busy doing other stuff...
This will be ANOTHER project that will no doubt be finished before a certain Blue with Ford stripes Camaro.... or the Queen MaryTorino... or maybe even before Sinister... LOL

It's not much right now - but it should come together rather quickly once Eric gets cranking on it. I kind of "sprung" this project on him when we were really discussing me just buying his 40 Ford PU... then he found me the body sitting in someones backyard out in Wyoming... and you see the result here. :bang:

Trucks looking very good Greg, that Roadster Shop chassis sure is nice:thumbsup:
This is exactly the type of DD/shop truck I've been telling myself for years to build. (although I am afraid I'll take it too far!!)
My duramax is amazing when towing, but It's kinda dumb to fire it up every day for the 4 mile commute to the shop!
Looking good!

Thanks!! There's lots of builders of the 1935 to 1940 chassis - but I like the way Roadster Shop does theirs. It's just solid and will serve me well as a DD.

Steve --- Once I moved to Sun Valley -- where my normal driving is done a 25 MPH and I get a 4 block stretch at 35.... and the big trip for the day is running down to my "shed" --- a whopping 15 miles - mostly at 55 MPH or less.... Doesn't make sense to drive anything too fancy -- or too fast... So this pick up should serve me just fine. I had Gwen sell her Cayenne Turbo because most of her driving is about 3 or 4 miles total - at low speeds.... and my thought was that in the winter around here - the turbo oil would be sluggish as hell. So she got the GTS - and frankly we both like it WAY better. Better torque - and for me - lower to the ground. LOL
This pick up is going to be nothing but my DD -- and I agree with you - the hard part will be to keep it simple - and use materials and products that can hold up -- not need polishing - and if it gets dirty - so what.
Now -- trying to hold Tracey's (The Recovery Room) feet to the fire when he does the interior will be fun..... I want simple - clean - early - RUGGED... dog can puke on it and nobody will know... "style". LMAO

I gotta show my pops the progress of the build, his retirement project is a 41 ford pick up. Once i finish up my cuda, i am gonna help him start tearing into that. Maybe when he sees this build he will want something besides a stock suspension and a flathead!!!

You know Scott -- that's a really good question. It just pretty much sums up our "relationship" since I first met him.
I always took it as a statement "You're still #1 with me!".

It appears that Charlie has a rare but very serious arthritic condition that causes the left middle finger to protrude above the other fingers on that hand. I'm not sure, but beware -- it may be contagious!
Also - --with every picture I realize more and more how much of a serious player Charlie is....... I mean - - - a Segway! I'll bet Greg doesn't have one of those!
It appears that Charlie has a rare but very serious arthritic condition that causes the left middle finger to protrude above the other fingers on that hand.
It's the opposite of a condition known as 'trigger finger' in which the tendon develops a bulge and catches in the guide sheath, left untreated the finger can lock in the clenched position. I believe the condition Charley has can be referred to as 'stink finger'. :sieg:

Then why don't we just put that in the title? The title of this one leads one to believe there is info on an actual 1940 Ford truck. It says nothing about and older guy with an apparent attitude problem. How can a guy smile so much and yet flip the bird in more pics then not.
And from what I remember from grade school he is not even doing the bird properly. Maybe those standards have changed also but I am not aware of any new procedures.

You guys all suck.just took Mayhem on a 2600 mile trek with the Goodguys and most of it was in the rain. Went thru the Rockies and went up to to 12,500 ft. That is the highest I have ever been on this Earth. Scary looking down to the right with no guard rail and realize if you go over you drop two miles. What a great fricking trip. In Texas now and sat night we get to take our cars on Texas Motor Speedway which I'm told is very banked.
And the car ran like a top and I only got one ticket.

Sucks to be you --- I've STOOD on the banked turns there (found a hole in the fence down by turn 3) --- and even went for a ride in a "NASCAR" (ask Ed about the smile on my fat little face when I climbed out of it).... which was much more fun than I thought it would be. You'll be SHOCKED at how steep they are.... 23* I think.
You're only 2 hours from Austin -- go down and see SW.... and eat at Franklins or The Salt Lick. He'll take you out to COTA... and hang out -- I'll be there Saturday.

The new "track bike" I sent you a pic of earlier.... that is SUPPOSED to go 30 miles on a charge.... I charged it up --- left the shop and headed home - it's about 17 miles... It looked so good in the "FORD" position... that a buddy did a U turn (it's a small area -- one road in and out) and came back to see if I needed help.
Yes it has pedals and the only reason I made it to where I was waiting for Gwen was using them. This bike is HEAVY.... single gear.... and not made to pedal. It's made to ride. It was fun for the 11 miles!

you should of bought one of these. www.brammo.com. They are here in Oregon. Why didn't you just get a Segway like Charlie? Just cause you face planted the one time you got on it? Don't give up you'll eventually get your balance.

Rode the 17 miles to the shop this morning without a hitch.... Learned a couple things via a simple email.... #1 my bike (they're all custom built) was built in RACE MODE.... which obviously uses more more and goes faster. I held the throttle wide open until it ran out of juice.... turns out you don't need to do that to maintain speed... once up to speed you back off the throttle and she keeps humming right along. Trust me - this thing hauls ass....
Charged it last night - all night... which I also think was part of the issue - even though I had charged it for awhile yesterday.. but maybe not enough. I may have needed a full on charge.
I don't want anything like what Charley has.... LOL
The reason I face planted was I didn't turn the stupid thing on --- it needs to be ON in order to work. Imagine that! How stupid!

Okay ----- FINALLY some progress!!! Remember that I "sprang" this project on the shop. There was no plan or no discussions about timing etc -- it was a minor discussion about buying the shop truck that within a week turned into a purchase and a build. So there is no time set or even discussed of when where how or when. LOL
Firewall comes out because it's being set back to make better room for the engine choice and radiator etc. The rest is rot repair and a little hot rodding. :>)

Really? How many roadsters do I need? You're like Charley.... his "YOU NEED" is his "I WANT".
The pickup is for Stella --- she'll have a nice bed to ride in so I never have to leave her at home (and NO you bonerheads Stella isn't a new girlfriend -- Gwen is my WIFE - and STELLA is my Chocolate Lab). And this is a bed that never has to be made.

Just a base LS3 crate motor (430ish HP?) and an electronic automatic. We discussed three pedals --- but this is just an around town cruiser and an automatic is just easier all around. The 430 LS model is more than enough for motivation in this truck. They did set the firewall back an inch and a half... and with The Roadster Shop coil over chassis -- it will be a nice little driver.

The designer I'm working with - Jim Smith - sent some ideas along so we can begin to work on "details". I had posted earlier that I'd met Bill Collings of Collings Guitars, at the Lonestar Roundup in Austin. He agreed to build a one off steering wheel for the truck... and this is a rendering Jimmy did...
http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/ad33/gregweld/40%20Ford%20Pickup/img190.jpg (http://s919.photobucket.com/user/gregweld/media/40%20Ford%20Pickup/img190.jpg.html)
A paint "version" (there have been several).... It would NOT be yellow/green like this - We're playing with a scheme rather than a color... and this was also about one off wheels.... Wheel pic is below. I'm trying to keep a fairly '50's theme -- with some simplicity in the build because this will be my daily driver...
http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/ad33/gregweld/40%20Ford%20Pickup/WELD40sage.jpg (http://s919.photobucket.com/user/gregweld/media/40%20Ford%20Pickup/WELD40sage.jpg.html)

And then some interior designs....
http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/ad33/gregweld/40%20Ford%20Pickup/WELDint.jpg (http://s919.photobucket.com/user/gregweld/media/40%20Ford%20Pickup/WELDint.jpg.html)

Since we take our Lab, Stella, everywhere with us - I wanted a space she can get out of the weather... This particular design is perfect except the "end" where it is too Conestoga wagon looking... so take that out (the closing flap part of it)... and it's a go.

Whats a Dow 7 paint finish?
Dow 7 is a chromate conversion process used on magnesium wheels. It results in a golden finish with red and green iridescent hues. It's a very fragile finish that provides almost no corrosion protection and was intended to last only long enough for the magnesium to be painted.

Your wanting to Dow coat the artillery looking wheels or more of a mag style wheel like the drawing. The hub cap wheels Dow coated will be weird as they kinda look like a steel wheel. The Dow coated mag wheels would be cool with some dragster push bumper stuff on it.

See below.... there won't be any "mag" styled wheels on this project.

See below for wheel answer.
NO --- I don't like the two tone.... It will be one color. And mostly likely be painted in a single stage Urethane.... Not base/clear. I plan to wash this with a mitt and a bucket of soap.... I don't want to have to care about swirls etc in the paint.
The renderings look great! I follow Jim on Instagram, he's always doing something cool.

The answer to all of the above is NO...... you're all confusing one rendering with another. The full body rendering showed a proposed wheel design - which I nix'd.... because the truck is being built as a daily driver. Daily drivers need frequent washing... as they aren't show cars that are packed away in cotton balls... That style "mag" wheel had the proposed DOW 7 PAINT...
The Artillery "styled" billet wheel was an alternative because I objected to the "mag" style wheel (not based on looks - but based on the DD use of the project). However.... There is not one good reason I can come up with for paying for a one off billet wheel and the painting of them etc... when I can buy them all day long off the shelf.
I didn't include all the discussion details between builder / designer / owner. I was just showing "direction".

I like the artillery wheels, too. I like it even more that the intended purpose is to be driven often and design decisions are being made to make that a reality.
Thanks for sharing the process with us!

Since we take our Lab, Stella, everywhere with us - I wanted a space she can get out of the weather... This particular design is perfect except the "end" where it is too Conestoga wagon looking... so take that out (the closing flap part of it)... and it's a go.

See --- when you do this stuff - you pick a designer(s) that has done some things you've seen that you like... you have a long conversation about your "look" and "feel" of the project. Then they start sending you stuff... at first you just let 'em slide and you shrug your shoulders... obviously they need direction and they're just totally in the dark. So you say subtle things to them like "did you ever attend classes at the art school?".... or "well... that looks like something my Grandmother would drive". Then they send you a few more of their crazy ass ideas... and you give them more "input" like.... "is this for some other customer?" or "I didn't know you worked on the BatMobile". After a few back and forth along these lines - they settle down and get to work with some of the ideas YOU gave them 7 sets of drawing and $3500 in billings ago. I usually give them kudos at this point something along the lines of "one more set and we're done" or "I've got some stuff I really like from "X" (his competitor) that I think is going to work". After "critiquing" a few details, some times I ask them if they'd really like me to post this sh!t on the Internet...
In about a year they finally come up with one to two things you can use and everybody is happy.

This poor old truck has been back burnered due to many "other things" going on -- at the builder with some help changes etc and other projects that needed priority.... and I've been so busy with the house and all it's details that getting the truck done wasn't even thought about... I'm okay with that.... it's not like I don't have enough other stuff to drive and play with.
Jimmy Smith ( http://www.jimmyshotroddesign.com/ ) and I had a long discussion yesterday about finishing up the design details so we can get Pinkee's the direction they need to get back to work on it. He should have some more detailed drawings (choices) in a couple weeks.
I will say there's lots of interesting "Pinkee's" touches on this truck for what is to be a "daily driver"... Lightening holes in the truck bed mounts.... and a few other little surprises. LOL
You'll have to look closely --- towards the cab for the bed mounts...

The 180k and 65k, is that dollars?
Is the seat in the mustang adjustable? How about cup holders?
Can I upgrade the cabinets in the Toter? The oak may be a deal breaker.
I know, I know....thanks for coming by.

Dollars! Not Euros.....
Mustang seat IS adjustable - and my buddy Andy who is well over 6' has driven it without complaint.
I will happily paint out the oak cabinets in the toter.... for additional cost of course. I can make them Cherry..... red. Let me know what other customization you'd be interested in.
I have a plan - not quite public yet.... but in the discussion stages. If it pans out - I'd like to move my track operations to Thunderhill - thus eliminating the day and a half, one way, travel time.... Therefore eliminating the need for the Toter/Stacker. Since the Mustang has proven completely reliable since the engine builder switch - I find myself not really needing a back up car. It's fun as hell - but the new car would be far more fun....
Since moving to Sun Valley I find no need for multiple hot rods - in fact - other than the couple of long distance trips with Gwen's '33 - I didn't drive them at all. There is no real car / hot rod scene here... and when the '40 Ford P/U is finished - that will satisfy my hot rod needs. I prefer to have Stella (our lab) with me/us - and she's not riding in any of the hot rods! She will be able to go in the back of the P/U.

Doesn't sound like a place I would want to be.... Good thing the rent is too high!

There are a LOT of collector cars in the area -- serious collections. Big deal -- they don't use them. They just sit in A/C controlled show rooms - and the guys wear designer suits.
I want to see blue jeans and Tshirts and out and about driving.
So while they might call themselves "car guys" - they're not my type of car guy.

Spent a bit looking over the thread, almost forgot what was going on....With the build moving forward again, have you got any fresh renderings from Jimmy? The interior drawings look great, I imagine pleats but the doors and dash look really good, basic with a bit of classic style.
Prime that Chebby and ship it off to the boy, he'll figure it out!

Darn...I was hoping for build updates with pics. I see your selling off the herd Greg. Your banker, Mr. Lillard crawfished on the loan terms, and needs his money now, huh? Hard to trust a guy, with rigormortis in his middle finger...

Jimmy should be working on more detailed "build" renderings as we speak. RE: Interior.... I told Tracy (Recovery Room) I wanted "early horse blanket".... but frankly = I'm not sure what I want - but it won't be for car shows... it'll be for daily wear and tear and use. Simple and useable and rugged.

No.... I'm really just realizing a "sea change". The move here has changed a lot of things - not the least of which is not having 30 years worth of hot rod buddies dropping by and hanging out or working on some project or another.... and frankly -- I really like the track day driving - which is a relatively new activity for me and I'd like to do more of it at a higher level (just because). Now - going forward, I'd like to reserve more of the hot rod driving to various road trips... roadsters aren't good road trippers... and the '33 Coupe was bought from my buddies widow simply to help her out.
Since I have TWO track cars -- I can put them both up for sale and if one sells - I may still have another to use... but the Mustang is getting a full engine refresh and Jerico rebuild - so would be fresh as a babies ass.... and now would be the perfect time for someone to buy it. It's fresh - it's fast - and it's dialed. I am discussing a new track car project - which would be really exciting and fun.... and if I only have ONE track car - and a shop in Californina - I don't need the toter/stacker -- so it all just folds up into a major change.

Dang Greg you really are making some changes. So when is the new house for sale and the move to Napa taking place? :stirthepot:
Why don't you just marry a Lawyer and take up sewing purses..... :mock: :hitaxeonthehead:
That sounds like a pretty smart idea.

Funny when a car is finally done and reached its potential how
you are sometimes ready to move on.... Greg has the mustang dialed
and I can see where he is ready for the next step- which he mentioned to be me at the Track.. sounds like a pretty cool project
I finished my Pantera many years back and enjoy running it and actually
cruising it also... went to Alice's in the rain yesterday... but am still tweaking
my Firebird so that gives me something to work on and fine tune
One of my Pantera buddies loves to tweak on his car but rarely runs
the car...his thing... Others show them which is their thing.. I have
a couple of others wanting to get them track ready but to many other
things in the works
I have thought of cashing out of Kalifornia many times but think
I would miss the buddies coming over to the shop and the many tracks,
cruise nights so close and often

I wonder how much effect the 'Weld provenance' will have on the sale of these vehicles...
