I finally got a chance to start tearing down the car. I also gutted the interior except for the steering column which I will need to roll the car around. Debating on how I am going to actually strip the paint off the car. I'm really interested in seeing how much bondo is actually on this thing. I already found one of the cowls dented in so I will attempt to do a little "body work" on it and see how much of it I can straighten myself. Wish me luck!

I've been debating this for a while now and so far this is what I have been told:

Acid Dipping: Even with the company immersing your shell in a neutralizer and rinsing it off as best as they can, there is still a chance that some of the acid can leach out of seams that were spot welded, etc. Also, places like the rocker panel where you can't get paint or some sort of coating to, since now that it has been stripped of paint and is raw metal, can start to rust over time.

Bead Blasting: Better in the sense that you won't have the rocker panel issue but you still have the problem of dust getting stuck in the nooks and crannies, no matter how good they try and blow out those areas, and you get sand coming out later.

I don't know to what degree or how often this happens but it has been mentioned in several sites and I have heard it from some paint and body people.

Anyone ever have a bad experience like this? I would love to hear about it so that I can avoid these types of problems down the road.

My friend, JonnyR, and I got down to some serious wrench turning(Well.......mostly JonnyR!) and have made a little more progress in getting the Nova closer to the paint stripping process. Just a few more things to do and then its off to the auto parts store to buy aircraft stripper. Here are a few pics to remind those that have already gone through what we are going through of those happier days of getting nice and dirty!

Here are a few photos of the car with the paint stripped off. I just finished the main shell and will now move on to the fenders, hood, etc. Tell me if you think it is worth continuing or if the body rot is too much.

Please tell me if you think that the body rot is too extensive to continue so that I can look for another body.

Thanks,

Look for another body??? What's wrong with the one you have? That rot is minor. Everything else is solid. We'll have to replace that rear quarter, though.

Naaaaaa.......from what I've gotten from the other posts I think we can just cut out the weld and add a strip down the top of the quarter and even it out. I guess I'll keep it and continue working on it. :captain:

LOL....I'm trying to keep a balance to the car and not just go with the whole "bigger is better" theory. I think some of the wheel sizes they are using now look kind of goofy. I don't want that for this car. Also, I don't want to look at it in a few years and have it looked dated. I want to try and maintain a classic feel to it with modern upgrades.

I see your point but i do not think that the width of the tires will upset this. If you had gone for 20" rims instead of 18" i would agree that you would have gone to big. In my opinion you will not change the "classic" feel by the width of the tires. That is more to the point of the size and design of the rims.

novanutcase
12-21-2006, 01:58 AM
I agree although sometimes when you have such a wide tire it gives that "streetsweeper" effect which is what I don't like about Drag cars. I'm also concerned with the geometry of the rear and how this will affect it. I will have to punch this into my friends suspension program and see where we are at with it. Here are the wheels I am thinking of going with:

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g170/novanutcase/Ice.jpg

I'm thinking polished hoops and brushed centers. What do you think?

BTW.....Kadette how is your project coming along? :)

kadettcqp
12-21-2006, 02:39 AM
I see your point and never the less it is your choice. Sound like an interesting program? How does it calculate the rear end geometry? And what does it tell?

Real nice rims!

My project is not really started yet. I still wait for my car to arrive. By now it is somewhere on the ocean between US and Denmark. I hope to have it by start of january. And then all the work will begin. But i try to have as much ready as i can before i have the car. Then i will be able to have it running by summer.

novanutcase
12-21-2006, 02:46 AM
Check it out!

http://www.performancetrends.com/SuspAnzr.htm

It's kind of confusing at first if you don't understand all the terms! If you really want to learn about how a suspension works and how to design it start by reading a book called "Chassis Engineering" by Herb Adams. It will open your eyes as to how suspensions really work and the compromises that engineers have to make when they do design them.

I bet you can't wait to tear into your car huh???!!!??

Good Luck!

Looks like a very interesting program. That will be fun to play around with. But i propably need to read that book first. I better do that before i decide on how to design front and rearend on my nova. When i have to do i better do i right. I will do a rather big order from amazon soon i think. My intention is to build everything on the car myself or with help from friends. And also paint the car myself.

No i am really looking forward to get the car. And to see it in person. I hope i will not be disappointed. Between christmas and newyear i friend and I are going to make some room for the car and shine up the garage. Then i cannot wait to get the car and start to fabricate on it. Then i just need a hell of a lot of parts from the US. This i my first complete project so it is very fun to look for and decide wat parts to go with. I hope the final result will be killer!

novanutcase
12-21-2006, 08:53 AM
Yes, read the book. There are others that you will want to read also but that is definitely a good starting point!

Do you know how to Mig and Tig weld? I ask this because you say you want to try and do the car yourself so if you are, knowing how to weld will be a big plus.

As far as parts, contact me and let me know what you need. I'll try and hook you up with some discounts. I have a few friends that will give discounts on certain parts like wheels and brakes.

kadettcqp
12-21-2006, 12:05 PM
I will surely buy the book and see what i can learn.

Yes i do know how to weld. And have access to both mig and tig welders. But i hope i do not need to weld that much on the car. It should be a quite good starting point. And i do not intend to make big changes to the body of the car. I already has shaved doorhandles and gas filler cap. And it has an minitub.

Okay i will need both brakes and wheels but have not decided which yet. And then i will need a coil over front clip.

Can anyone tell me the performance differences there would be in a 335 rear versus a 295 rear? HP will be around 550 hp.

novanutcase
12-25-2006, 12:10 AM
Alright....I think I might have made a decision on the tire width issue. Rodger, the fabricator, pointed out that the Z06 has 325's and has a 500+ hp motor in it. The engine I'll be running will make more or less 550 hp. GM must have put that wide a tire on there to handle the horses that baby cranks out. Can't argue with that! So I guess we're going with the 335's. I actually kind of liked it and if I change my mind later I can always go down in width.

12-31-2006, 12:36 PM
Well .....so far the plan is to do so but we're trying to see how we can do it so it is undetecable. Main problem, obviously, is the main hoop. Can't seem to get around that! Also the crossbar on the main hoop. I want to retain the rear seating but with a crossbar it would be too dangerous for the rear passengers so we're trying to figure out what we are going to do. I definitely want to try and run the a-pillar downbars through the actual a-pillars, if possible, through the cowl and firewall and tie it to the front subframe and the C-pillar downbars down the inside of the C-pillar and tie it to the rear subframe. Either 6 or 8 point probably!

The motor arrived to keep us warm in this record setting cold spell. you can just feel the power in the crate.

The truck is coming apart this week after final body work. The engine gets dyno'd on the 24th. And the reassembly shall begin. We have had to slow down so that the Bob Ryder of Truckin magazine could cover even more of the build. There has been about 20 pages thus far covering the build in 3 issues. He is covering the paint this month and the upholstry and details next.

I saw that you speedster project is coming along nicely.

We are starting in The 500ci Prochargered LSX 67 chevelle with C6 stuff next month. So We had better get to work.: unibrow:

I'm refferring to a fabrication and enginerring standpoint. I think that statement holds true. Thus your challange is to make it all come together and work properly.

Also, in getting the car to the quality standards that you have started with. You can not give in, rush this type of project, nor take shortcuts, use 2nd rate parts, etc. What ever your budget was I'm sure it will be double by the time you finish it. Getting the correct ride height, outside color right, with quality matching interior, badass rims that set the car off, all are keys to making the car sit up and take notice and takes the car to the next level. :)

You are right on all counts!!! I must say that, all joking aside, Rodger and the crew at Ironworks have helped me in making the car what it is and what it will be and for that I am grateful so I can't take all the credit in terms of the vision. Rodger Lee has been a great guide for me in terms of helping mold my ideas into reality! Besides, Rodger is a lot bigger than me so if I don't do what he says I'll get my a$$ kicked!(JK!! )His entire crew are really talented guys and I hope that the build I am doing sheds some more light on them!(Not that they really need it with all the new projects I've seen coming in as of late!)

Well If you come tommorrow you shold be able to see the upper frame rails that Brycen is ever so gently bending to clear 10 gallons of stuff in 5 gallon bag. the upper rails look bitchen but you will have to cruze over the hill to see it in person. And Sean will probably start on the rear risers to the back frame section.

You know, I sold my coupe project (right after it was set on the jig and completely opened up and blasted/ primed...kinda like yours before frame work began) because i realized it was going to be so much work i would never see the end of it because of the time it would pull on me vs time available.

Seeing this bad boy makes me realize i did the right choice...But more so, it makes me have regrets seeing how AWESOME yours is! Man its going to be killer! (Already is!!!)

I just love those full on builds. It looks great.

I had not seen your project before today but had already had the chance to get some compliments from you on my own project, so now, be assured that they are returned, times...at least TEN!

I read this whole thread with interest and l look forward to more on the development!

John,

Your frame is shaping up very nicely. I hope mine turns out that nice. Couple of questions. What minimum ground clearance are you going with? I was going with 5", but I think it will be closer to 4" once we get my motor jammed in. I still can't decide how much I will need in the "real" world.

Also, did you chance your mind about the shockwaves? I noticed that you have QA1's being mocked up.

The coilovers I am using are Chris Alston Double Adjustable Varishocks. Ride height will be between 4" and 5". Corvettes are usually around there so you should not have any issues.

But i truly agree they choose the better truck. Your truck is totally awesome. I keep thinking about my next project and you guy's are top on my list of builders that i would choose.

the fabrication looks plain awesome, and the car will be fantastic... but i can however see somthing that troubles me.. and that is the tube that holds the front shock mount, i assume it will also be th emount for the front UCA, it looks long twisty and unsupported, it will take alot of changing loads and needs to be stiffened up considerably (i know that it is propably in the works but you asked fi we could see anything fishy)

other than that i hate you, and i want your car!

Thank you for hating me! In an odd way it makes me feel good that you would say that because it shows me that you like my ideas that much. The spaces inbetween the DOM will be supported with mild steel inserts along with our tying the front end with the custom radiator support that we will be building for the car. Rht now the emphasis is to finish the rear end and cage and, when we are ready with the UCA's we will start building the front support but thanks for the input!

I need to say at least one more time that the ideas that you are all seeing is not just my vision but a collaborative effort with the shop and in particular, Rodger Lee, the owner of Ironworks. He has been the driving force in making my dreams a reality! Thanks Rodger!(I owe you and the boys a steak dinner BTW!)

And the Nova is being built by a rag tag group of hillbillies form baker-tucky.

Sorry about the hijack john, i can let you look at the knock list to make up for the hijack.

Looks awesome! The fabrication work is impressive!

It may be the picture, but the shifter looks like it's going to be really far back (toward the rear of the car). Are the seats going to be set back, or the shifter moved, or is it just how the picture makes it look.

I do not think a stock headliner would hide the bars or hang right. If you put a board headliner in the car it would have to go on the bottom of the bars and you would lose alot of headroom. Do not think you would get a board on top of the bars.

We cut out the roof structure to sink the cage into the headliner. The ahlo sticks out alittle more that the stock structure but the A pillar is the same dimension as the original structure that was there. Now the B Pillar will be shot with clear coat so you don't see it at all.

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g170/novanutcase/shoppics3-7-07028.jpg

I had asked the shop to run the C-Pillar down bars inside the C-Pillars much the same way they did the A-Pillars. I don't like that you can see them out the back window. We'll have to work on that!

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g170/novanutcase/shoppics3-7-07029.jpg

I don't like the way the bars turn to meet the rear point in the trunk area. I would much rather it go all the way back to the rear most part of the frame and run a support where they are attached to now! Any suggestions or comments? Oh well! More brainstorming to make it right!

On the rear bar thing. Leave it the way it is now and just add a bar from the furtherest rear point and tie it in...it would be very strong.

Hi John,

I was in SoCal this week and took the opportunity to stop by Ironworks and meet Rodger and peek at the projects in the shop. You are in great hands my friend !! A super nice guy with a sincere passion to build off-the-hook projects for his customers - and a great crew of highly skilled craftsmen providing TLC to deliver. It was obvious they truly love doing this work and it shows in the quality of your Nova. The pictures just don't do justice to how sweet this thing is in person and I was fortunate to see it in progress. To get to build a dream car like this - and to get the opportunity to work with a group of people who give their absolute best is very difficult to find in todays world. You're a lucky guy and we can't wait to see what the Ironworks team can do. BTW, bring your checkbook because artwork like this costs major coin !

Do it! As Garage Dog said, when you see all the other things going on there in person you will be blown away! Everyone that is on that crew are masters of their trade! There are so many great things going on there that, honestly, your head will be spinning when you leave! It will do one of two things. It will either get you so revved up that when you get home you'll immediately start wrenching on your car or you'll leave amazed but disgusted because you know you could never do what they do as well as they do it! Probably both!

I really feel that Ironworks is going to be the next big thing as far as car builders. Rodger Lee has been the driving force in the build and in helping me realize the realities of building a car of this caliber. It's because of the Ironworks boys in general, and Rodger in particular, that this car has been able to hit the level it is at and, hopefully, where it will go!

By the way, my wife and I took a trip up to Bakersfield last weekend to visit Ironworks Speed & Kustom to see Novanutcase's 66 Nova. One word to describe John's Nova: AWESOME!

There were members from STEVESNOVASITE there as well. It was great meeting John (Novanutcase) and his son.

I was also introduced to Rodger (the owner of Ironworks Speed & Kustom)! What a shop..... totally professional work. The 300+ mile round trip was well worth it. Anyone considering have a car built: You won't regret having it done at Ironworks Speed & Kustom. They TRULY build cars from the inside out!

Rodger and John (Novanutcase) openly discussed all aspects of 'The Nova'. I was in heaven.

We are building the headers and exhaust. We are also setting up the steering. It is kind of a strange combo of nascar suspension with huge mickey thompson tire and prostreet rear suspension. And way to much horsepower for the street with a 12 gallon fuel tank. John has some pics of it if he wants to post them on here.

See ya Rodger

I have been watching this car,I've seen alot of builds and this is a bad a$$ car.It would be great to get it to Columbus, iron works work is every bit as good as any i've seen.Your a good customer to let a shop build to this level. Can't wait to see finished product:thumbsup:

I'm not sure we could make this body removeable from the frame and still be able to fit all that we have and still do some of the tricks we are working on. These novas are small cars, if you were not already aware of that.

Thanks for the compliments guys.

I agree! When you have guys this talented it's hard to not let them loose! It would be like telling Van Gogh to paint a house in solid color! He just couldn't do it and it would be a waste of talent!!

Oh ok i was looking atthe pics and thought the firewall was built into the tubing...must have been my eyes playing tricks on me. I like the idea of it all being one piece. with all the killer fab work I think I would powder coat the bottom of the car then go in and paint everything else. ITs going ot be awesome. I really dig the new transitions you made for the hinge pillar into the firewall...that is always such and ugly area on those older cars.

What's wrong with 5' 7" - not all of us picked the right parents for height or the ability to tan but that's another story.

The car looks awesome. I love the stance.

I would love to see some pics from the front end looking down the side. I am curious to see how much the front tires are tucked in.

can't wait to see it with some chrome spinner wheels on it.

5'7" is the magic height. Now if I were not as wide as I was tall, I would be a model. Nice car too by the way. I think the way that ridge is in the front fenders gives the elusion that it is not that low. My Jeep Cherokee does the same thing in the rear. I swear it looks low in the back but when you measure it and compare it with the front, it's very close to the same.

17" and 18 " wheels off a 97 C5. I like the proportion of the 17's and 18's alot. Not to big on what chevy had goin as far as style, but it is better than still on the jig table.
