Hey guys,

Just wondering what you'll do with the body/chassis before paint - blast it again and do a sealer coat ?

Thx, Jim

Frame will be blasted and powdercoated. Body will be blasted and epoxy primered.

At least that's the plan for now!

The body is welded to the frame and will be powder coated as an assembly

Pics have been a long time coming but, honestly, we haven't really done a lot of sheetmetal/Tube work since the chassis is pretty much done and the main sheetmetal is also pretty much done. Now it's just the little details like sway bar mounts, gussets, etc. but here are some pics that you might like:

The Meat Wagon has arrived! Notice the height of the rear tires in relation to the bed side height! BUHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g170/novanutcase/shoppics11-30-2007037.jpg

Front end valance with air inlet. We'll be splitting the inlet with brake duct cooling vents to each side and power steering cooler in the middle.

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g170/novanutcase/shoppics11-26-2007003.jpg

Roughed onto the car!

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g170/novanutcase/shoppics11-26-2007008.jpg

Closing off the firewall, Note the size of the Vintage Air unit. I told Rodger I wanted to pull up into the beach parking lot on the hottest summer day here in Cali and, when I get out, have icicles hanging off the end of my nose!

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g170/novanutcase/shoppics1-18-2008007.jpg

Trunk side pans

In our many "Stand around and throw dumb ideas out" meetings Rodger came up with a great one as we stared at the gas tank and wondered what we would do with the spaces to the side of tank! Do we just cover them in sheetmetal? Naw! Too easy! He thought to put the battery on one side and a toolbox of sorts on the other, kind of like what you get when you buy one of those luxury european super cars but with better tools(Snap On).

Final Dry Sump placement! Note the cooler than Fonzie brackets that we had waterjetted! These are straight off the jet. We will refine them and anodize. Now I gotta figure out what color to anodize them! OH CRAP! I gotta pick a color? AGAIN??!!??

Fill tube will be extended through an opening cut through the fender support

hey John, just checked out your site, your designs look the biz!

PS I think you mentioned earlier in this thread you were a musician. What do you play? I'm still a gigging musician but work in propery investment during the day. (have to wear long sleeves in summer to cover my tattoos)

PPS Build looks great, except its inspired me to start the planning process of fitting a IRS into my 69Dart

Thanks! Fall should be pretty cool too! We're going to introduce some Hoodies and Thermals!

Yup! You read right! I got to do some pretty fun tours in my R & R days! I play guitar, bass, trumpet, just enough drums to set a beat for scratch tracks and piano!

Go for it! I'd love to see how the IRS turns out!

John

05-15-2008, 05:15 PM
Yeah the IRS will be great when installed but in the design stages the biggest challenge for me is adapting the the late IRS (from the late model Dana built ford we have over here) to suit the "A" body track width while maintaining good suspension geometry.
I guess thats where projects like yours shine because that is all accounted for from the onset.
The rest of the car was planned out but I have to admit the decision to go to IRS has only happened in the last few months which has sent the rear of the car back to the drawing board.

Hey I play bass too, for me the most amazing place I've toured with music would easily be the middle east.

Mayhem to say the least!:unibrow: :D Did a canadian tour with Green Day opening for us! Strange how the tables turn. Did a second euro/japanese/australian tour that we co headlined with a little hollywood band called The Cramps! Creepy people but super fun and really nice! We've been putting along doing little odds and ends stuff but I thought I'd show you some of what we've been doing!:)

In my last post you saw the front end all torn apart so that we could install the gussets that we could'nt get to with the motor in. Here is where we are now.
http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g170/novanutcase/Enginecompartmentdetails.jpg

I was curious as to what the car weighed since we had most of the major components in the car so we had the car scaled!

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g170/novanutcase/Novaonscale.jpg

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g170/novanutcase/WeightScaled.jpg

Not bad! 2700 lbs! I figure with interior, Glass, full tank of gas and whatever other stuff is going in the car we should be right around 3,000 lbs.(Of course, my fat a$$ doesn't figure into that weight!:fluffy:

Where did you get the intercoolers? How much air can they flow? Did you go with a d1 or f1? Why not try and route twin turbos?

This is one hell of a build!

Finished mounting the intercoolers. Now all that is left is to finish the plumbing and we should be done with the supercharger system.

Exhaust system is pretty much routed. Just need to finish running it out the back and finish weld all the fittings.

1 Muffler - and not 2 ? Interesting. More info and other pics plz ? Just wondering if the single unit flows enough air for your supercharged application. Might be a great solution for my project since I have almost zero space in the back to run mufflers. (looking at something like the C3 setup)

Keep up the awesome work Team NovaWerks !!

It is a stainless muffler design for a Power stroke or duramax engine. They go through one muffler. So I think we will have room to spare as far as CFM through the muffler. It is a DNA muffler. They sound pretty good. We had to completely rework both ends to make the merge into the muffler from 2 3" pipes to one 5.5" muffler.

I might have a better pic of the merge.

you could probably run a pretty seriously pumped up LS3 for the cost of that LS7... but then again, maybe with all the trouble you'd have to go through to arrange/make the swap it wouldnt be worth it.

for what its worth, a cammed LS7 sounds pretty amazing.

Nova works did a great job! Look at that engine bay...damn

I vote for you to pull the LS7 and go with the LS3. I hear that boost can be addiciting. Also, you can have an LS2 machined with oil coolers just like the LS9...just a thought.

I like how there are various parts that had to be removed to install the procharger just scattered on the cowl. Old radiator tabs, old radiator hoses,we are running #20's now because, WE HAVE TO, old sway bar bushings, cuz those has to be changed, plus practically my hole bolt bin.

I think it is funny you say contemplating a boosted LS3 when we all know you mean postponing the LS7 hitting the for sale section and me calling GM for an LS3. That is like you saying, I have been comtemplating trying something with that Hot girl, Yeah right, contemplating my ass. I remember when this was just supposed to be an average tube chassis 66 that would be cool and get some attention. Those days are long gone.

I really want to anodize it in that crazy carabeaner orange or purple color...... I think that would look awesome with some adeal wiggins clamps from XRP........

I'm sure the warranty has been affected, but Autometer make the best Quality gauges on the market, so what else are we going to use, besides the BEST.

As far as making the door bigger, we would not be able to do this stuff if it was not for John, so as long as he pays to keep the lights on and the welder welding, we will just keep install a bigger front door. I have a feeling the interior will out due the rest of the car with some of the ides we are working on.

I love those carbonfiber meters... perhaps cause I have a set of those!

Yea, I have a set too.
Come to think of it I purchased them after I saw Chicane at SEMA on its debut. I guess product placement does work. Or is that just called advertising?

I did! Your car looked SOOO SICK up on the stands but when they put it on the ground! :wow:

I got a good laugh watching people that were checking out the Alston booth wander over to your car thinking "Hmm! Cool Nova! Lemme check it out!" They had no idea! LOL! As they approached the car you could see a kind of perplexed look on their face as all the details started to wash over them! As soon as they were able to get a good look their jaws just dropped!

It was so funny just watching the progression from perplexed to just completely in awe! Just seeing guys sprawled on the floor checking out the undercarriage just shaking their heads in amazement! It was great!

I wasn't able to sell it yet. Its one of things, out of sight out of mind, its been sitting at a friends house in socal for almost a year now while I have his truck doing work to it.

I would love to come to pleasanton but a stupid lady ran a red light the other night and whiped out the front end of my car so now I have to fix that this weekend. I'll have a friend take pictures of it! Great build, I love it! My first car was a '67 Chevy II that I still have.

Jeff-

It is just the reality of the car world. It takes a ton of money to be able to put some of these cars together. There are alot of projects that can take years and years to complete. It's just about cash flow to be able to knock out a pretty extensive project in a quick time frame.

Ex - if a customer is doing a 250k project in 24 months ( Which is slow ) that's 10 grand a month. take that same project and do it in one year. Well that's obviously 20k per month. To most people that is alot of money. Imagine the cash flow when you get up into the Super high dollar range. Like 750K in 18 months....

Those numbers are mind boggling when put down on paper, even though I kind of knew already what these cars cost. How can they not at $90/hr, and we all know what the parts cost.

Sometimes I tell people that if my car was built professionally it would be a 1/4 million dollar car. I certainly see cars that cost that much to build that don't have half the fabrication work or development as my car. Obviously its a bit of a stretch because I don't have pro paint and bodywork (there's $50k right there) but I think its true enough - if you went to Roger or Troy or any of these guys to build what I've done that is the bill you'd be looking at.

But then I have to admit that in this day and age, in this economy, and with what's on the market, I'd be lucky to get $40k. (and a not insignificant reason for that is its NOT built by Roger, Troy, or pro builder).

Ha, and I was feeling the pinch when I realized my parts bills were over $1k a month for years. And after I'd spend 8 hours fixing some stupid bracket or uncooperative body panel I'd just think, how in the F'in world could anyone afford to pay shop rates for this kind of work ?

Well Our labor rate just went to 75. But we have been 65 for years. But when you consider how much times it takes to do something right and to the utmost quality. Then multiply that time by total amount of those hours. It gets pretty expensive. We have a truck coming out a SEMA that has an amazing amount of time in it for a bunch of hidden details that few will ever recognize. The customer jokes with me alot that he likes the mods that nobody will ever notice, but they will always wonder why in this case the truck looks so good.

This a very interesting read and not to mention awesome build been following for awhile and I know what your going through.
I feel pretty lucky with the situation I'm in on my build.
Reason so is Ive been able to have my body guy come to my place to work on my hot rod I've done all the fabrication on my car and he comes in and smoothes it all up and blocks it with in an inch of it's life fantastic body guy but nice he comes here so cars not tied up in paint jail.
Witch is good because there's always a lot of building and fabbing to do between his trips here.
I get him 5-6 hours every Friday or so pay him 100 bucks cash and he's like a machine when's he's here really happy plus I work with him and is a great learning experience watching him and helping.
Just takes time on these crazy over the top builds I to have made sooooo many lil subtle changes to my car and can't imagine what I'd have in the car if I paid a shop to do my fab work.
