I am finally getting around to starting my build thread as I have been putting it off for a while now. Some of you might remember my last car, Dead Cat, for those that do not here are a couple of pics.

My new project is going to be the polar opposite of the one pictured above. It is going to be very raw and hopefully very fast.

I owned the yellow car for 19 years and always wanted a magazine quality car. After the car was complete and I started doing the "Run Through..." events, I found that I liked driving on the track way more than I liked driving on the street. Dead Cat was sold last year and now lives in AZ.

My new project is the Thrift Shop Camaro. Since I live in the heart of NASCAR country, I plan on using as many used race parts to build my car as will work with the direction I want this build to go. The name came to me when I met a guy that deals in used parts and I went to his storage building. As you can tell by the photos, the name just kind of jumped out at me as I was shopping.

So here is the project car in all her glory, rougher than most but a diamond in the rough...at least that is what we all think when we are buying one of these piles.

Dave has been on me to post up my build. I told him that it was so similar to what he was doing that I was just going to add my name to the title of his thread. If you have been following his thread, you have a good idea what I am about to lay out for mine. Same idea, but different coast, the highlights of my plan are as follows:

All aluminum SB2.2 10:1 stroked to 400 ci (actually 393 but close enough)

Jerico or Tex dog ring 4 speed

Full frame with Jake's Hot Rod Shop suspension

Body dropped on frame with a ride height of 4 inches

11.5 front rims and 13 rear

Lexan

Wide body

Full cage

I had this same idea in my head, but a little more like a "Late Model" type racecar. Wide 5 hubs, quickchange etc.

We will have to catch up at one of the events this year. I am in the Hickory area.
I dont post here much. Same username on PT.

Good luck....Sounds like a killer setup!!

Matt is about right on the video. I have 2 boys 10 and 13 and I have listened to that song about 1 million times to and from soccer practice. It does fit though. First time I went to that guy's storage building I had a specific amount of cash in my pocket to get a gas pedal. Once I was there I knew I was going to be short on cash. Next time, I had more than $20 dollars and I was poppin' tags.

Lots of used NASCAR and circle track re-sellers in the area. He is just one of many. Next time I go up to Roush /Yates I will get some photos. Imagine a Home Depot, but with race parts filling the shelves. Motors on pallets stack in the shelves, entire car on one isle. It is crazy.

As soon as I figure out how to do the questions in quotes it will be easier to answer specific questions. Before I started the build, I was going to get a Howe road race front clip and run the 5x5 hubs and all the circle stuff.

Tough to be creative with a name for a project when I am not creative enough to do something other than a Camaro. It is a little goofy to name you car or project anyway, but how else do you keep your seperate from the others? "I am the guy doing the 1st gen Camaro on the site." Yea, that narrows me down to about 1000 projects. LOL

Somebody asked about NASCAR brakes. Kind of...using an AP calliper used in circle track with a lug mount on a floater with a Grand National hub in the rear. I will post up some pics later on that one.

The yellow car was on the Cover of Camaro Performers and had an 8 page spread. April of 2009 (Thank you Mr. Rupp!)

As far as paint, you may be looking at it. Going to replace the roof so it will be in primer, may leave the rest of the car as is until I get it sorted. It will be a wide body, but may cut out the fenders and quarter dirt track style for a season.

DTM fan and going to try and give it that twist. Once the tires and wheels are on, I am going to use foam and cardboard and see if I can get the look. May look like crap, but I will never know until I try.

If you can pull it off and make it "just barely street legal" for an occasional romp on public roads it would be neck snapper! Really looking forward to seeing where your vision and resourcefulness takes you on this one.

You cannot have a full frame car with the floors and trunk in the way, unless you are The Roadster Shop. The plan is to cut out the offending metal, plate the inner rockers and slide the body over the frame.

I'm a big fan of jagged metal, and used parts. You know that cheap=fun in my book. Its funny how many guys(me included) got a case of the as$ after having a super shiny high end magazine car. Kinda took the fun out of it, plus the fact that 150mph blasts seem to take there toll on shiny cars.

As far as the thread name, from a guy who had Muttstang, or $5k budget Mustang, I feel people in glass houses, you know. Can't wait to see this come together.

I happened across this thread tonight - I had no idea you were building a full frame racer as well. We are moving in slightly different paths - you are going toward full race and I am moving back toward some race, some street. I had a new 10 GS Vette for a bit and had to sell it because every rock chip drove me batsh!t crazy so I learned I like 'em a little ugly and fast, not shiny and fast, as well.

I love the DTM stuff as well and thought about doing something like that with the Nova - when I found myself needing to narrow the front track to get the 12" tires in there I thought about pulling the whole fender out and just adding a 2" step at the rear of the front fender, similar to your rendering. Going that route with a Camaro should be pretty wild looking. I would stick with a rough look as you suggest you might for awhile - I don't plan to paint the Nova until I have a fair amount of track time on it and have done some sorting, because part of sorting tends to be a few off-track excursions that are hell on paint and low altitude front splitters. I have mowed a fair amount of lawn with my 914's splitter and my fiberglass nose has some damage to prove it

As for that thrift store, holy hats Batman! I have never seen so many hats in one place in my life, let alone calipers. Those AP brakes are certainly nice.

Subscribed - between your thread and a few that others that are posting here have going, I should get plenty of ideas for changes as my car progresses.

now that is pretty awesome, has the front fender pushed out like I was mentioning. I am not a fan of the latest, really choppy rear shaping on the cars - I am sure the aero is important but at the same time, loses a little form for the sake of function. You are killing me Payton - I really want the Nova to look like a sleeper and have stock body form but now I am starting to think I should pull the fenders out front and rear :D Running the exhaust down behind the rockers and dumping out like a sidepipe would be fricken cool tho'

Figured that I would get some work done and not stretch the build thread out for 2 years.

I got some mock up engine parts from my friend Jim Pettigrew, who works for Hendrick and did some work on the yellow car. These parts were sent up to Jake. SB2.2 heads from a blown up Cup motor, the motor plate is mine that I got from Hendrick. Mock up oil pump and a set of tri-y style stainless headers from I believe Jimmy Johnson's car. They are made by Pro Fab. 5 gallon Peterson oil tank.

So my thrift shop buys are the oil tank, headers and motor plate.

Awesome Payton! Any idea if the headers will actually fit or do you need to mock up and see? Where's the oil tank going?

Payton King
04-08-2013, 09:42 AM
Oil tank will be in the trunk or rear seat area.

Headers are up there to see if they clear. I can get different Y's and a different merge collector if needed as they all slide on. More concerned with floor clearance. They should clear everywhere else or with a small amount of additional fab work. Figure these new are $3600 and I can get them for $600...way cheaper than having a custom set made.

I can tell just by looking at the tubing its 2x4 tubing, looks like Jake snuck a piece of 3x4 in there where the core support bolts on,and 2x3 for the trans crossmember. Don't know for sure, but looks like 1 3/4" round tubing on the center there. I'm running the same front clip on the AMX I'm building.

I really like the minimal nature of Jake's frame, keeps the weight down knowing that there will be alot of cage work holding it all together. Loving this build so far.

Payton King

The 2x3 for the torque arm crossmember was done like that so when I run 3 inch exhaust it will not hang below the frame...Jake's idea

Got to attend a private track day at Charlotte Motor Speedway and they had the road course set up. Basically you turn into the infield just before turn 1, run the infield and back on the track about mid-turn 1. On the speedway all the way around until your turn back in at the start of turn 1. I brought Peter along and he let me take a few laps in his 69 since I have no car. On Goodyear R1's, full DSE suspension and 632 ci NELSON big block. Need to get my car done asap. His car was a rocket.

Jim, good to see you are still around and will look you up if I am down that way.

Still need to locate me a Jerico

GW, love your little mustang. After driving on those slicks it is almost silly to go back to street tires, but I don't have to tell you that.

So how did that BBC handle? IIRC that's an iron Big M block and they are tanks. I've been toying around with the idea of an aluminum BBC to keep the frontend weight down myself. Honestly it is cost prohibitive though so it is nice to hear another car is working nice with a motor at least as heavy as what I'll likely end up with. Although, I don't have the DSE frontend either...

Slicks are like crack and may have been masking the weight, but the car was well ballanced. The track fast with really no tight turns, I may feel different track or autocross.

Been crazy busy with going to the Southern Slam in Kershaw and trying to wrap up both of my boys soccer season that will never end.

Ed, the engine builder, has been slowly coming up more and more great scores. He found a set of 6.2 Pankl rods with just a couple of dyno pulls on them. Apparently Roush was doing some rod/stoke testing and made 3 pulls, changed the combination and like what they found. He also found the fittings we need to use with the oil pan I picked up.

http://i1138.photobucket.com/albums/n539/paytonking/MediaCardBlackBerrypicturesIMG02492_zps11db95ce.jp g (http://s1138.photobucket.com/user/paytonking/media/MediaCardBlackBerrypicturesIMG02492_zps11db95ce.jp g.html)

These rods have a hole laser drilled up the center to oil the wrist pin. The dry sumps were pulling so much vaccum that is was sucking the oil out of the wrist pin and causing motors to blow up.

may apply, not sure about the touring though...

That pan probably weighs about 25 lbs. They make them thick so they do not get sucked in by pump. When those pans were new and they were running SB2 motors they were about $2100. I got it for $450 with fittings, instruction sheet, gaskets.

I hear you on the garage art. I have almost bought used parts that I would never use just for that very thing.

Like you said above some of those NASCAR 6 stage pumps create enough vacuum to dry out your bearings so what side the pick up is on kinda doesn't matter.

Before I dyno'd my dinosaur Dailey said to limit my vacuum to 12 or under in the crankcase to eliminate the possibility of drying the bearings.

With that rod set up how much vacuum does Ed think you can safely pull in the crankcase? What kind of ring package is he going to use to max the hp with the vacuum?

Are you going all in with spring oilers in the VCs also?

Are those bungs welded in from the bottom some sort of inspection hole? I am assuming not drain plugs since any residual oil sitting in the pan would be below that bung height.

And I have never used banjo fittings on a pan like that. I have to say that is pretty slick on the NASCAR teams' usage, nice and tight packaging and I may have to reconsider doing something like that. Coming off of my current pan with even a 90 deg fitting takes a lot of space to sweep out when I am really just trying to come forward to the pump. I guess it just never popped into my head that they would work for that - they are obvious for brake lines but didn't consider scavenging with them. The screen on the end of the banjo bolt is great too.

give access to the oil pan bolts, the pan has an internal rail.

The fittings are a banjo style but they snap on and do not have a bolt through them, very slick stuff. I would try and get them used as new ones are very expensive.

Still planning on it being street legal not because it will be. The lexan pretty much throws it out, but I can get it to pass inspection once, I am good to go. In NC with older cars, one inspection and they are good for life. I do think it will be silly trying to run street tires on the thing but I will not know until I try it.

Payton King
05-07-2013, 08:32 AM
the car being street legal. Here is the AP Racing NASCAR pedal box I picked up. Per NASCAR rules the masters must be on the firewall and not in the car and the brake pedal must be steel. This system is the only one I know of that takes a pull type master. The "cage" holds one end of the master and the pedal pulls the rod...No side load with this set-up that can happen with a push type master.

the car being street legal. Here is the AP Racing NASCAR pedal box I picked up. Per NASCAR rules the masters must be on the firewall and not in the car and the brake pedal must be steel. This system is the only one I know of that takes a pull type master. The "cage" holds one end of the master and the pedal pulls the rod...No side load with this set-up that can happen with a push type master.

.043, .043, 3.0. Gold top, Napier second, Stainless Steel third. Total Seal. A solid 20 inches of vacuum...quote per Ed

I will be running a 5 stage pump and yes I am doing the valve covers with the spring oilers.

Pretty impressive stuff

Ed is a big Ford guy since he worked for Roush and actually thinks the Ford D3 motor is a little better than the SB2 due to the exhaust port. He has 3 or 4 sets of heads in his shop now...that D3 would be perfect for that little yellow mustang.

That Ed sounds like a smart guy. :stirthepot:

Or a big blue one.LOL

I have tons of pics of the cage construction, but they all seem to look the same after a while. Will try to pick and choose to give someone an idea of what is going on. Cage, when completed, will be NASA certified with a log book. I do not plan on going wheel to wheel racing, but you never know...I also have young kids, so I want to be as safe as possible.

Its funny, once everybody realized that you couldn't really hear the big kicking stereo over the engine, and rarely ever turned on the a/c, and when we did it was low on freon. What the hell, why put all that heavy crap in there.

The first time I went over 150 mph and carried it for a 1/2 mile or so, in a vehicle as aerodynamic as a brick, I realized the cage was my friend, and I will put up with that extra weight and expense. I personally, am still not ready for permanent door bars on a tagged car. Freakin race car!! I would have said HOMO, but don't think that's allowed anymore. LOL

I do think we need to name this new breed of cars, how about ragged touring, or lets go back to my roots, and call them street racers. Wow they sound stupid, we need somebody creative to get on this.

I have a few small updates. Ended up with a 6.2 rod, looks like the bore will be 4.180 so I am going to be a little larger than the original 393 ci.

Heads are back and ready to assemble. Need to "cc" and see where we are so we can have some pistons made. Compression may bump up to 11:1 because I am back on making this thing fuel injected. I like the rod to stroke ratio for that rpm requirement, 1.72 is solid.
Just curious what is more important on a race / track car. Horsepower or Torque ???
throw in my .02, worth maybe a penny... and specific to road racing, not drag racing.

keep in mind that HP is a multiplied number with torque the basis of the math and a multiplier of 5252, so it is basically a math measurement - dynos measure torque and then do math to quote a HP number and this is also why HP always equals torque at 5252 rpm.

HP = Torque x RPM ÷ 5252

Keeping that in mind, you want the most torque you can get in the power band that you are going to use which tends to start looking like HP since race cars operate at high rpm. So while the torque seems low in an F1 car, the HP is huge because it is multiplied by such a high rpm value - that said, that is the powerband they want to use to get the most overall power out of that engine combo so they are technically maximizing the engine for max torque in that powerband.

The way I have always tried to do it is have the car make max torque near the bottom of my rpm range -500rpm and max HP at the top rpm. So if I am going to shift at 8500rpm and my rpm drop is 1500 rpm with a race trans, I would want max torque around 6500 rpm with the torque curve as flat as possible up to 8500 rpm with the max HP around 8500. You don't want it to be too peaky of course as there will be turns where it is better to go below the band and "lug" out of the turn than shift and 1 second later shift again.

Point = while a slightly smaller cam might make a higher torque number at 6000 rpm than the bigger cam at 7000 rpm, may be even flat as hell from 4500-6500, and appear to only rob a little HP at 8000-8500 rpm, it does absolutely nothing for me on a road course because I will rarely use the power below 6500 rpm, maybe that one turn that it is easier to lug the engine than to downshift only to upshift a second later.

So, as an example, my current engine combo for my road race car - I wanted to use a tappet cam for longevity which limits the rpm a fair amount, which then adds to component longevity with springs, rods, so forth as higher rpm is higher loads on these parts. I have 7 years on this engine with zero rebuilding and it is just now starting to use oil and puff a little smoke, so I have gotten a lot out of it :)

Max torque = 5000 rpm with max HP at 7100 rpm. That is a 2100 rpm band. I had a 1500-1700 rpm drop on my shifts, so at 7100 rpm I would drop to 5400-5600 rpm which is peak torque + 500. If I felt like lugging a turn down to 4500 rpm I would, but I don't optimize for that. I could run out to 7500 rpm with no issues if it was required to run deep into a turn, but generally I shifted around 7K and dropped to around 5500 rpm.

That all goes out the window if you demand 2500 rpm drops of the trans, which then requires a much broader powerband from 5500-8500, but a spread that wide on shifts is a bad idea for a number of reasons, not just powerband.

You are not missing anything as I asked the same question. Apparently the Chevy, Ford and Toyota head intake runners are all the same in Cup but everyone has what they think is the best program for the port work....learn something new every day.

Also learned after they run a race they pull the heads off and have a CNC machine that will do another valve job on the head and only take .002 off the seats. Crazy race stuff for sure at that level.

I need to go back and do the calcuations, but Ed told me 415.06 CI

Well that sure is interesting... I wonder how that works? The SB2 heads have been around for a while, and Toyota is relatively new to the sport. So I'm curious how that is done from a design perspective...

Cubic inch calculation=3.147 x radius squared x stroke x 8

piston bore 4.180

395.89 CI

byndbad914
07-31-2013, 05:51 PM
3.1416 (pi) x bore squared x stroke x 2.

That said, I am assuming you have a 9" deck height on the SB2? If so you would have a 1" compression height on the piston?

9" deck - 6.2" rod - 1.8" (stoke/2) = 1" CH

that is a short piston ;) Every time I would build up a 347 Ford (stroker 302) which has a 1.1 CH I would always think that piston seemed so short. The good news is your rod to stroke ratio as I mentioned before is better than a 347 and even tho' a 347 wasn't all that bad (1.59) they would rock the pistons a fair amount in high rpm engines and wear the skirts. I suspect having less side load from the longer R/S will help keep the pistons from rocking so much. I am a big fan of R/S values in the 1.7 range if you can't already tell. It does definitely keep the piston weight down which is good at 8500 rpm :unibrow:

Heck, the LS7 has nearly as short of a piston and much worse R/S and I bought a car with one so what do I know hahaha. 'Course 8500 rpm isn't in my future anytime soon.

Very high piston pin, will be into the lower oil ring, no big deal. Very short piston skirt...like all NASCAR motors.

I will have plenty of photos once the pistons are made.

Speaking with Mike Norris now. Possibly a FAST system. Was going to convert it to coil over plug and run a LS1 box, but they only go to 8,000.

Dude, found your thread. I love this pic right here--that is awesome. Looking forward to seeing you work your magic on this one. All we ask is that you bring it to at least one West Coast event when it's running.

to do on the cage...corss bar, door bars, etc.

Cross bar is out to make tin work a little easier.

Electrostatic painting is a great idea.

Thinking about gold plating the intros that I have for it. Do you think it would be too much?

Almost went with a gold anodized rim for an old school look, so you were not that far off on the gold plating.

Now that the body is on the frame time for a little tin work. First order of business was the fire wall.

Looks great Payton!

How are the panels going to be finished?

Sound deadening measures?

Will probably paint the interior of the car, cage and all, white. Will due some heat barrier under the car, may have to do it on top as well.

This car is on a different level when compared to the yellow car. Looks killer!

Somehow Payton I just think "WE" are way ahead of the rest of the pack... They're still stuck in PTLand... and we realized early what we really want is just a dang race car!

But I like it!

Yea GW, I knew I needed something safer and a lot less shinny the first time I got out on the big track. I also got tired of putting up velvet ropes every time I parked it at the store. LOL
