A cage that was less than user friendly with more than a few questionable welds...time to start over. I am doing this for fun on the track and not to get hurt if something goes wrong. With 2 kids and a wife, safety is the biggest focus of this build.

Time to get the motor plate all sorted out. Good news, bad news. Bad news is the Hendrick motor plate I was going to use will not work. Just not enough room for the rack and the oil pump on the same side.

Here is something you do not see everyday. These are pulleys that Hendrick machines up for their motors. They are modular and they make them in different diameters to change the pulley ratios for different tracks and RPM ranges.

My car building project now has just been a pleasure. The stress of my project is completely gone, so yes, the right person/builder makes all of the difference.
Ron, with the motor moved back as you noted, needed a remake of the fire wall which makes a great transition to my next set of pictures. That was almost like it was on cue.
Before we get to the firewall, we needed to do a little header fitment to make sure we were going to have room. These headers are from Jimmie Johnson's 48 car. They are made by Profab.

That sucks balls having to cut all that work off and start over again.
At least its not funny car length anymore.
Do you need a CF intake box/lid - I have one from Carbotech or whatever company that made it - it has some damage to the back - but it is non painted and in raw CF.

Well I only have a few more pictures left to bring this thread up-to-date where the car sits now. It is taking a few weeks off to catch it's breath and then we will be starting on the rear suspension and cage.
Seat mounts made prior to floor installation.

I had to go back in my thread to see where I left off. Have pics downloaded so here we go.
When I last left off we (Pettigrew and myself) decided the cage was not safe with poor weld penetration in many areas. Cage and floors cut out, new firewall, floors and tunnel. Now time for the new cage...and yes the roof needed to come off to get good welds all the way around.

So this far into the build how far have you shifted from used Cup car parts to ordering new expensive stuff? It's a slippery slope my friend. It starts out one way and ends up completely different. I'm sure there are a couple things that you've bought twice or three times already, you know how it is.
Is Ron also helping you with Front end geometry and sorting out the brake system? Can't wait to see more progress.

If its not mandatory Greg, it should be. What happens if you need to get out and adjust your kids car seat at V.I.R., or need to vacuum all the dirt out of the car after an offroad adventure like Jeff Cleary always needs to do. A chunk of 2x4 just ain't cool.

Thanks guys!
Some parts have been used and some have been new. My braking system is all new stuff and so is all of the suspenion. As an expample, the rods that I have for the motor are $3600 new. I got them from Roush with 3 test dyno pulls when they were working on bore and stroke combinations...$600.
Do you consider that used or tested? I call it a bargin.
Ron Sutton is working with me for front and rear suspension design and car set-up.
Which goes right into my next few pictures of the decoupled 3 link mock up. Sutton took my information and made a blueprint for the install. After installing the housing mount I had see what it looked like.

Thanks again guys! I am pretty happy with the direction that the car is going in now.
No cup holders, no stereo, no E-brake unless you count a block of wood, but a good possibilty of side windows.
Sieg, I do miss the thought of 4 doors though

Ive been trying to talk Guy into this set up for years. Maybe 4 or 5 more of these pop up and he'll cave.

In the simplest terms...
On a conventional 3 link, as you move the top link down in the front, creates more forward bite on accelleration. The further you move it down and forward bite increases, it effects corner entry (decelleration) making the car loose. So you are limited to how much forward bite you can put in a conventional 3 link.
By adding the top bar (decel link) in a decoupled 3 link, you can tune/maximize forward bite/grip with the accel link (bottom link) and not have the loose problem since the top bar is controlling decelleration/corner entry.
Ron Sutton can explain it way better than I can, but that is it in a nutshell

Too Funny Skip!
So just like about everything else on this car. The place for the fuel cell was made to a dimension that no off the shelf fuel cell would fit. We also did not like that there was no protection for the cell in the event of a rear impact.
The rear section was cut out and re-made.

Will there be any of that foam or other material to prevent fuel sloshing put in there, Payton? I know nothing about a NASCAR fuel cell. I just figured there would be something in the tank to help keep the fuel around the pump.

That is just the protective case that the actual cell fits into. Either foam or rubber blader.

Plan on running the car everywhere I can. Carolina Motorsports Park is 1 hour from here, Road Atlanta is 3, VIR is 2. I am close to some nice tracks.
...But it will be tagged for the street too! Vanity plate "ECBMF" East Coast Bad Motor Finger
I can get an out-of-date NASCAR bladder for $200. Per rules they can only race with them for 3 years, but they are good for 10 to 15 years. So as stated above, will have a bladder along with foam. Will be using a CTS-V pump with the help from Carl at Vaporworx.
It is an 18 gallon cell.

Hey Guys!
For those not familiar, this is an offset, decoupled three link. The reason to offset the top link is to counteract the torque transmitting through the rear end housing.
With all 4-link, centered 3-link, truck arm, torque arm, leaf spring style rear suspensions there is a significant amount of torque steer. The friction of the bearings & gear mating surfaces in the rear end cause power loss ... in the 7-12% range. Due to the friction drag, that 7-12% power goes into rotating the rear end housing down onto the left rear tire & up off the right rear tire. This causes uneven tire loading. The LR tire gets 7-12% more loading ... and therefore 7-12% more grip ... than the RR tire. This causes cars to have more grip on the exit of LH corner & less grip on the exit of RH corners.
With a 3-link ... if we offset the top link to the passenger side the correct amount ... we neutralize the torque steer. When done correctly, the car now has the same torque applied to both rear tires for even grip on corner exit, regardless if LH or RH corner. We can't do this practically with other styles of rear suspensions.
The decoupled part is ultra bad ass. Because it is the only rear suspension version where we can have it all ... almost.
In all 4-link, centered 3-link, offset 3-link, truck arm, torque arm, leaf spring style rear suspensions ... the instant center (swing arm pivot point) defines the anti-squat for corner entry handling & corner exit handling. If you move the instant center to increase anti-squat for increased corner exit grip ... you are affecting the corner entry handling ... the opposite direction ... moving it toward loose handling on corner entry.
With any 3-link or 4-link track car, we're typically adjusting the top link(s) down at the front chassis mount ... bit by bit ... to increase grip on corner exit ... until the car starts to get loose on corner entry. Then we adjust the front of the top link(s) back up just enough to not be loose on corner entry. It is always a compromise between corner entry grip & corner exit grip. This is the case with any rear suspension model, except a decoupled version. FYI: There are decoupled torque arms, but they don't have the advantages of the 3-link. So I only focus on decoupled 3-links.
With a Decoupled 3-Link ... we have a dedicated top link for acceleration & a separate dedicated top link for deceleration. For short, we call them the "Accel Link & "Decel Link".
The Accel Link only loads up under acceleration. You can see the blue bushings in the Accel Link photos. Under acceleration, the top of the rear end housing rotates back & pulls on the Accel Link ... and compresses those bushings. The instant center formed by that Accel Link determines the anti-squat ... and therefore the tire loading & grip ... on corner exit. Under deceleration, the top of the rear end housing rotates forward & pushes on the Accel Link ... and releases the load on those bushings. The shaft inside the Accel Link "free slides" forward on deceleration ... to the point there is gap between the bushings ... and therefore no load on that link.
Under deceleration, just before the load is fully released on the Accel Link bushings ... the load is engaging the red poly bushings in the Decel Link. Under hard braking, the top of the rear end housing rotates forward and compresses the red bushings in the Decel Link. The instant center formed by that Decel Link determines the anti-squat ... and therefore the tire loading & grip ... on corner entry. This is completely independent of the Accel link.
Under acceleration, as the top of the rear end housing rotates back & pulls on the Decel Link ... this releases the load on those bushings. The shaft inside the Decel link "free slides" back on acceleration ... to the point there is gap between the bushings ... and therefore no load on that Decel Link.
It sounds complicated, but frankly it is pretty simple. I'm sure whoever came up with the original idea had sleepless nights figuring out. But once it is installed, it is simple to tune ... and bad fast. We typically set the Decel Link at 12°-15° uphill (to the front) and start with the Accel Link forming its instant center directly under the CG of the car.
I love this next part ...
Set the Decel Link as close to 15° as packaging will allow ... and forget it. From there we tune the Accel Link for optimum corner exit grip with no concern about how it affects the corner entry ... because it doesn't.
Tuning:
Need more corner exit grip? Place a 1/2" ratchet into the top of the adjuster cone you see in the photos & rotate clockwise to lower the front of Accel Link. Adjust it until you have optimum corner exit grip. If you go too far (getting "greedy" I call it) the car will push on corner exit. Simply turn the adjuster counter-clockwise until the push goes away. Easy-peasy.
In summation ...
In my experience, the offset, decoupled 3-link is the ultimate track car performance rear suspension. It allows the optimum grip on corner entry & corner exit, no torque steer & no impact on mid-corner handling. No other rear suspension can do all that. But there is a down side. It rides rougher on the street, as the poly bushings in the Decel Link add spring rate. I have some clients that run this set-up as a simple offset 3-link on the street, and swap in the Accel & Decel Links for track days. The 3 bolts & swap takes about 10 minutes.
IMHO this is not a suspension for most ProTouring cars. For 95% street use, little to no fabrication and keeping the rear seat ... I prefer a Torque Arm or Triangulated 4-link rear suspension. If done right ... 3-links, Offset 3-Links & Offset/Decoupled 3-Links are for hardcore cars that prioritize track performance over everything else. But these require professional fabrication, roll bar or cage & eliminating the rear seat.

Hahaha, years ago when my dad was racing circle track cars on a budget, my mom was stuck driving to work in the truck he used to haul the trailer. When you need a decent towing rig sometimes it's hard to swing paying for it without using it as a regular vehicle also. Unless your Weld. I'm pretty sure she's still pissed about having to drive a 1 ton crew cab dually everywhere instead of a little car. Sometimes things are a compromise.

I have planned on doing the offset 3-link, watts on my '66 Malibu, but this makes so much sense it's crazy. I've seen something similar to the link parts listed in the Speedway catalog, but never the two way fitting at the rear axle. Sooo, where does one get this stuff?
Payton King
04-02-2015, 06:18 AM
All of that stuff came from Ron Sutton. He calculated offset of links, heights of both the accel and decel links, etc. I ordered it from him. There is similar stuff in other racing retailers parts books, but the suspension design service and racing expertise has me giving my money to Ron.

While the chassis stuff is coming along, we have also been getting the motor ready for assembly. After Jim made the motor plate, I took it to Ed to get my water and oil lines together.
The water pump I am using takes an o-ring and snap ring for the lines to the block.

From each side of the water pump water goes to the side of the block. Water also enters the block from the front just like a normal small block. My motor also has spark plug cooling so there are 3 ports on each head.

After the water lines were complete, we loaded up the motor and mocked it up in the car to get the layout of the oil lines. Because we moved the oil pump to the right side, we will need to run the lines around the front of the motor.
Check out how much material has been removed from the back of the block. This was the way a lightened block comes from Brodix.

Nice Bro Truck! Hahah.
Where the skulls done by a previous owner?
That truck doesn't look like it will fit in your garage - my Duramax 2500 barely fits in mine.
Love the updates to the Camaro - we going to get a chance to see engine dyno vids anytime soon? What kind of EFI are you using - the TB based Holley unit?

Yes, all the custom work was done by the previous owner. Frank Garcia, who was the center for the Carolina Panthers.
No way is that truck fitting in my garage. Top of the roof is 7'2"
Pistons and rings just came in so all I need is head studs and a cam. Motor vids are a few months away. Have not decided on an injection system, either AEM or Holley. May have a line on a throttle body off of an RO7.
What amazes me is I will be running an LS firing order and we called Comp cams. They have 50mm, SB2 cam blanks with an LS firing order sitting on the shelf. Just need to come up with specs to have it ground.

Very cool build! I've been following this for quite a while, just haven't commented yet.
Is the LS firing order the same thing as a 4-7 swap for a 1st Gen SBC? If that's the case, it doesn't shock me that they have the blanks on the shelf. It's pretty common for race engines, both SBC and BBC.
On edit: I see it's not the same. It's a 4-7 and 2-3 swap relative to the 1st Gen engines. That is interesting the blanks were on the shelf.

I was doing it mostly for the type of electtonics I was originally going to run, but later found out it is good for about 5 HP. Not that I need 5 more HP but all the serious guys do. I think the RO7 runs that same order.

The watts mount was too low to the station tubes. We cut it out, modified it and added the trick adjuster so we can make fine changes instead of an inch at a time like it was before.

Car is turning out way nicer than I had planned. Would have blasted the body before starting the project had I known what it would have turned into. Now I get to prep it by hand.
GW- Need to look closer at that Miata as my seats barely fit into my car from the shoulder restraints. I assume you do not have those on your seats.
The easiest thing to do on the pistons would be get another set of rods .125 longer, but it is not everyday you can find a set of Pankls for $600, so they are remaking the pistons.
Race car? Carpet and cup holders and I am good to go. LOL

JJ,
The early Wayne Due C5 frame had the same issue. You can correct it with a longer shock or redo the upper shock mount. From my experience it will actually clear at ride height and under compression.

Understood, I don't want to grub up this thread, but rubbing is bad, at any stage. If anything, it removed the coating on the springs, and they rusted. Can't keep the springs loaded all the time.

Sorry, I was out of town and off line.
The upper control arms are made to C5/C6 specs and are a direct replacement. My upper and lowers are 1 inch longer than stock on each side.

From there, Jim moved onto getting the exhaust routed. He had to drop the intermediate collectors 2 inches to get them under the car and he still had to do a small mod on the floor. Those headers are off a cup car...Jimmie Johnson's 48 to be exact.

Looking Glass falls were around the corner. That one was about 400 yards from our camp. There was a smaller sliding rock about 100 yards away too.

Thanks Justin!
Stopped by this morning. Removed 1.5 inches from bottom of tank and relocating the oil drain. Rough mounting complete.

So after reading all through this, I hate my life, I hate my project....scew you!
Actually his is one of the absolute most cool builds I have ever seen. I think the closest thing I can think of to it is Big Red but this is that to the next level for sure. In fact I would love to see some head to head at the Silver State or something like that when it's done.
Quick question on the Watts link, I've seen systems that mount the pivot on the rear end and then each bar to the chassis and then ones like yours the mount the pivot to the chassis. Can you or someone explain the benefits and liabilities of each?

This build reinforces that my next build of a track car will be a tube chassis - start from scratch....
That - or for about 40 grand I could buy a Cup car...
LOL

Next car a tube frame car....
I have had several guys tell me once you drive a tube
frame car you will never want to go back.. kinda like driving
a car with Horsepower then trying to go back
Very cool stuff going on with this one

Wow man--that's serious progress! Love the exhaust and the tin work. Can't wait to hear that motor sing---make sure videos are a planned part of this threads future.
