Looks good, Matt. I like the idea of putting the louvers and gas filler together.

Hey guys, I have pictures to post, and they're not old recycled ones like Rob has, they're new ones, and they aren't of hubs with yellow lug nuts or aluminum blocks with iron heads either.
Hey I was just taking your advice and combing thru the "junkyard"
. Part of the idea behind the car has been to draw on some of the cool original design elements of the early Mustangs and Shelbys and change and or update them without creating a contemporary looking custom build that feels "new." I hope that makes some sense.
one of my ideas was to get rid of the quarter window scoops and replace them with fuel and oil fillers since the car is running a dry sump in the back and a 35 gallon fuel cell that is so tall it can only be fed from the sail panel.
Since I've always one of the more iconic features on the fastback were its louvers I decided to try and add some. After playing with spacing, and the inclusion of the racing style filler that appeared on the Cobra, this is what I ended up with.
Now to figure out how to make a little stainless trim ring that matches with drip rail moldings...
I completely understand your build direction. Kinda like of you went back in time with the knowledge of today and built it with some parts of the past. Maybe that doesn't make sense.:BlahBlah:
You know what I think of your quarter window fillers already but to be official. Mimicking the feel of the original louvers is a great idea.
Can't wait to see what you come up with for the stainless trim. To date the build is Blue Oval approved.:lmao:

One side for Gas one side for Oil in the dry sump tank.

Good eye! I've been thinking that I want this car to be really street friendly, as in, something that is comfortable, safe, and reliable enough to drive to events a few thousand miles away. I also want the car to be a fun driver's car on the track. In order to keep the reliability and streetability I want, I'm not going too radical on the engine. There are manifolds that raise peak power up to 8200rpm, there are larger throttle bodies and there are nasty cams that build much better power in the upper rpm ranges, but get rid of variable valve timing. I don't want to go in that direction, since I want to preserve the most useable amount of low to mid torque and get the best response out of the engine that I can. To that end, I'm sticking to basic items like long tube headers, a little additional port work on the heads and good intake and tune using the factory engine management system. One of the good things about the factory harness is that I should be able to plug in a hand held tuner to the computer, and be able to change tunes in under a minute. See where I'm going with the two fuel fillers. :unibrow:
If the engine is grossly lacking everything that makes it really fast, I can always pull it out in a couple years to sleeve the block, bore it out, and toss in super light rotating assembly with a billet crank and better rods and pistons. :G-Dub:

Yeah, that description gets at what I'm trying to do. I'm trying to keep the number of overtly modern touches like billet tail lights, carbon fiber bumpers, or other finish details like shaved door handles, modern mirrors or new school steering wheel and gauges to a minimum. I want it to be a little bit like how Steve Strope designs his cars, except I want this thing to be functional for me, which means a new engine and nice seats.
Speaking of gauges, I need to give Speed Hut a call. I want some gauges very similar to yours, except I want a yellow tach that reads 7500 rpm at 12 o'clock. :D
See, your recycling of the junkyard has been useful both to me and Speed Hut.
Oh, and I think the dry sump must have been in regards to the customer's car. the Boss 302 engine uses a huge road race wet sump. I haven't heard of poor oiling on the Coyote motors like I've heard about on LSs. I know the Grand am Mustangs are still running wet sumps so they must not be too bad.

I think I can fit 315s on the front of my car, but I'm going the hellaflush route and since I'm planning on running street tires, I'm thinking of using either the 295 Rivals or the 285/30 Dunlop ZIIs. It's probably the rear that would need the wheel houses and/or frame rails modified to fit the 315 without rubbing.

You know Rob will not approve on behalf of the Blue Oval camp unless they are a 345 at a minimum. :twak:

I think I'll put a square setup on the car. I am debating going back and re-doing the area where the outer wheel houses meet up with the wheel openings so that I can run 315s. I don't think I'll be running any more than 450 rwhp, so anything more than 295 will probably make the car a little faster, but more difficult to control. I've found I have a difficult time controlling cars that have high levels of grip, are are a little tight, but just enough power to be able to break things loose if you really put your foot in it. I always find these types of cars to be the I'm most tentative to drive all out and I'm most likely to spin when I'm mostly done powering out of a gradual turn. I guess it all depends on proper car setup. I'm sure I'll be able to get the car fast with a little help, but I'm not convinced I can set my car up to handle just how I want.

Thanks! I'm thankful to have have had the opportunity to drive alongside some really great folks. Everyone who competed was a class act. I broke a steering rack on Friday night, and had it not been for help from Kyle and Andy at DSE as well as GW and Sieg, I would not have been running at all. I didn't have my head in the game, had a ton of fun regardless. Even as a driver this year, In a highly professional well run event (hats off to Jimi Day) i think it was the people who made the experience.

After a last min thrash to fix some gremlins you drove 325 + mi in the actual car you were competing in.
The misshap with your steering rack on Friday may have fazed you when you ran your hot lap but you were able to pull it together and put a couple of solid performances together on the autox and start stop.
You showed a lot of composure.
And when it was all done your drove your car 325 miles home.
Oh and I would have gave your camaro more than one point for design.:headscratch:

I'm not going to lie. There were some moments when I had my doubts - in fact I was pretty sure - that I wasn't going to be running at all. I thought it might have been over when we had to pull the engine. I really thought it was over when the rack broke, and when I was trying to pull the rack out at 5:15 in the morning, while it was still dark and I could hardly see, let alone reach the little power steering fittings (you DSE subframe owners should be able to sympathize), I really wanted to just throw everything down and walk away. When you drive to an event, and your car is on jackstands you don't really have that liberty though. I had a lot of help the last two weeks, from Dick and Jesus at BOS helping me to pull and re install the engine, and Charlie and Austin at RPM to Kyle and Andy at DSE for helping replace the rack. After taking the rack out first thing Saturday morning, I had to run to the drivers' meeting and when I came back Andy had the car back on the ground and ready to add power steering fluid. I was at a complete loss for words. There are plenty of others who helped over the last two weeks in their own various ways. I'll just call you guys the usual suspects. You guys all made it possible for me to prove the stubborn point that a car like mine could be driven and raced without a trailer.

He probably is cold if he is still back with family for the holidays.
I think I'm going to put a sweatshirt on in case it's a little cold, and go work on the little Mustang for a bit.
I've mostly been in the hunter gatherer phase of building again. I bought gauges from Speed Hut, and oil coolers and a third member from Roush Yates.
I also think I'm going to run the Shelby in a few of the USCA events. Running that car will probably be less expensive than running the Camaro at everything. Last year the Camaro really stole from the Fastback budget.

The Shelby is cheaper because I won't be tempted to cut up the fenders and widen them, or build a new more powerful engine, or simply get carried away modifying things to try to run toward the top of the heap.
Replacing axle bearings and normal things is no biggie. I think the Mustang, overall is simply just a little more reliable from my experience running it while waiting almost a year for the Camaro's engine to be built.
If I throw a set of good tires on it and it is almost as fast as the Camaro, all bets are off and I won't be able to help myself trying to make it faster.

You know I was just yanking' your chain --- but I do actually agree with you on it being less costly to run. When you're trying to do "work" on a beautiful show car (as the Camaro is!) everything takes longer to do... with having to protect stuff etc. I think the guys at McGee Motorsports can rip the motor out of the Mustang in very short order ---- and it's funny because they were telling me how much "care" they have to take because it's "so nice". HA!! Well yeah - it is far nicer than "just a race car" but it's still just a race car.
I have no idea why you've had so much trouble with the LS motors.... But you've certainly seem to have had more than your fair share! My motor issues were very minor --- a crack in an intake runner --- and a broken rocker arm... but they're expensive "repairs" non the less. Ordinarily I'd have done the R&R part of this stuff myself - but I really haven't been "home" very much and it would have just taken too long.

Ask Mike Maier what its like pulling a motor at an event. 2013 SCCA SOLO Nationals first day of a 2 day event while his wife is driving, the windage tray comes loose and gets sent through his oil pan. He and his codriver have to drive later that day. They pulled the motor via a forklift, welded the hole in the oil pan and got everything back together in a mater of hours just in time for his run group. He and his wife went on to win their class National championship with the car.
Moral of the story is never give up and when handed lemons make some lemonade...

I've been getting a bit more fab work done on the Mustang recently. I can't wait until I get to the point where I can assemble things rather than make them. designing stuff is very time intensive, not necessarily just in the labor hours, but also in the amount of time spent approaching the design. I often find myself stopping and taking a break until I figure out, what I feel is a good way of building something.
Since the I can count on one hand the number of time I have had passengers in the back seat of the Camaro, I figured having a back seat wasn't a concern this time around.
I've also gotten a roll bar mocked up since the last time I posted up any pictures of the car.

Wow, that's a Bentley, isn't it?
Our interior guy is much handier than I am, and I was thinking of having him build a removable section that would cover up the shocks, and look a little more similar to the Bentley's design, in that I wouldn't have as large of a big flat shelf behind the rear seats. I also wanted the rear cover to try and dampen some of the noise from the shocks if I'm going on a long drive.

That stuff looks super sexy. I was thinking of using the horizontal shock arrangement on my AMX, even went as far as to make up some of the parts. I just think the exposed shocks are coolest thing ever. I then remembered this one squeak that I have been chasing in my Mustang since I built it. It has driven me crazy, it has taken me 3 years to find and correct it. I then thought about what kind of squeaking and creaking the coilovers would make inside the car, and decided to go conventional. That look has me regretting my decision a bit. Love the build.

Thanks for the kind words guys! It has been a great learning experience and an exercise in patience. Short of some really boring office work where I had to compile a list of invoices for city reimbursal on road improvements, I never really had any individual projects that took more than 20 hours to do. Working on all of the little components in this has forced me to stop trying to rush to get things done, just to move on to the next sub project.
Next sub projects to be addressed will be fabbing the gauge cluster, steering column w/variable assist electric power steering and quicker 15:1 manual rack. I also want to build brake cooling ducts, and a rear diffuser, which means I probably need to order brakes and a gas tank. :G-Dub:
Oh, and the last of the wheel hoops I have been in need of finally shipped, so I can send those out to the powdercoater/annodizer. I need to pick a color that will complement the brake calipers and over various accent colors being used. so many little details to obsess on, and I'm not sure which ones to attack first. :willy:

Well, I'm still chasing down the right combination of steering hubs, couplers, adapters, bushings and mounts to make the electric power steering unit fit under the dash with a nice simple race type column. In the mean time though, I did a few quick sketches. I generally like to sit on ideas for quite some, and have a solid concept to work from before I ever start drawing anything. Some people can come up with an idea as they sit down and sketch something, I however, cannot.
One of the ideas that I've had since before I ever started cutting up the car two years ago was to create a different front lower valance. I've never liked the bumpers on the 65-66 or 67-68 Mustangs, but I was never able to figure out how to get rid of them without modernizing the look of the car too much, or making it look like the front was just one big slab. I bought a GT350R valance for it, and went as far as filling some holes and adding driving lights, but I haven't been able to get past how "tacked" on the part looks, and that awkward openness in the middle. I remember thinking that blending certain aspects of the newer Mustang front end might look good. I saw what Ron S did on his Mustang and I really liked it, but I didn't want to just copy his design. I feel like I've said this before, but if I was going to make something similar I had to make it my own. Fog lights, brake ducts and a different lower treatment should get the job done, I hope.

... And we're on our way to making something. Kyle at BOS is really handy with an english wheel with all of the curves and shapes I decided to hand this project off to him he will undoubtedly do a better job than I will.

too bad we don't know each other/live close, I've got dozens of ideas for vintage mustang front ends. My last valence was a no bumper wraparound to the flares style, but my latest version is actually going back to using the bumper. Integrating the bumper is actually much hard to do IMO, but if you don't like the look of it then that's an easy decision. I am working through using the bumper again because I'm going back to a more vintage style.
I'm totally with you on the Shelby/R style valences, I hate that big open hole in the middle of the front end, never looked right to me. Needs at least a 2-3" high separator there, whether it be a bumper or sheet metal.

Cool! I'd like to see the latest evolution of your car with the new more vintage look.
This last week Kyle put in a lot of time making the lower valance from scratch, and I think he did a really great job! Since it is really difficult to build identical to a sketch due to variances in proportions that may be off in the drawing, physical space constraints, functional differences, etc. we are rethinking fog light and brake duct placement. I may be moving the fog lights to the center of the lower grille opening. Not sure yet...
Anyway, here is a shot or two of it on the ground. The shape of the lower grille opening isn't set in stone yet and was painted in to give an idea of what could be done.

I like where you're going with this Matt. Front view looks great, but if I can make a suggestion the transition to lower front fender (ahead of the wheel) needs a little adjustment. It could just be the raw metal pics that accent what i'm seeing?
I know you said it's not done, and with your eye for design I'm sure you'll nail it.

Don't worry guys, I won't let it leave looking like this. The bottom two inches of the fascia will be getting a little chin spoiler, which will help to shorten up the big slab looking sides and blend the fenders into the fascia.

Found out that depending on timing I might be able to make the event, although if I do it will probably be to cruise around on Friday. Wouldn't want to embarrass anyone on the autocross in a Ford Focus rental car. Was also asked if she needed to look and dress the part for a car event.
Anyway, here is a little more progress. Thinking about how much of a splitter I need for the front. I'm trying to keep the core part of the design timeless, and possibly have a few agressive looking race car parts that can bolt on and off.

Greg, I really wanted to make something that could be produced in small volume, but people would have to add two inches to the bottom of their front fenders to make that front fascia work. I don't know why, but people seem to be afraid of buying parts that aren't advertised as "bolt on." Maybe I should advertise them as bolt on. Hasn't been dyno'd yet, but we're almost there. It has:
aluminum 5.4 GT500 block, dry sleeved and bored to 3.700," and diamond honed, then destroked with a lightweight billet Winberg crank and complemented with lightweight rods and pistons.
The heads are Ford GT/GT500 castings which have been ported and polished and topped off with custom ground cams and lightweight stainless valves.
Once the Dailey dry sump arrives it will be time to see what it makes! It isn't the cheapest way to make power but it should be responsive, rev to no end and retain more reliability than one of my LS engines..:_paranoid

I'm glad you like the front end. Part of me would like to make parts for it, or get Alex (Weld) make a run of parts for it. The front fascia might be doable, but would require buyers to add 2" to their fenders and I don't know how many people want to do that. I've also thought about making all of the front end out of composites along with a matching set of door skins, but then people would need to build their own quarters to match the door, and build wheel houses.
I could be like the majority of other manufacturers and advertise that everything bolts on.
Besides, part of the reason this looks cool is because it actually looks different than the typical Shelby or Eleanor restored. :unibrow:

Oh, and Ron because you want more pictures, he is the other project that has been occupying some time, I'll call it the "Super Secret Project.". Ron, you've probably seen since it almost all buttoned up since Brad said you were over at QMP recently drooling over parts for your, uh, formerly super secret project.
For everyone else, here is a little more Mod Motor goodness. size and cost aside, I really like how smooth they run, and how quick they will rev. I think Rob and Skip might be the only other people out there that will find it cool!

Just so you guys are all clear, that engine I posted a teaser pic of isn't my engine, although after all the measuring for the car that engine is going on, the manifold may be too tall to fit under the rear glass, and *have* end up on my 5.0 Boss 302 engine.

I have a feeling this car will look like it belongs there before it runs like it belongs there, but hopefully there is a good enough foundation to work from. I'm starting to understand Ron's madness.

For the 5.5L engine pictured, we are shooting for between 550-600. Part of it will depend on the power band. We're looking for more low to mid range torque than most mod motors, while having an incredibly fast revving engine. depending on space (i.e. hood or should I say clamshell clearance) we may run a regular 5.0 Coyote intake on it, which would probably drop power down lower, and sacrifice some top end, but may be worth it for a more linear power band.
For the Boss 302 engine, I'm looking to make 530 at the crank, with headers and exhaust cams and tuning, maybe even a little additional head porting. More would always be nice though.

Finally got the wheels on the car. Sometimes we just need to put on shiny parts because they help motivate us to get things done.
18x11s all the way around. I will need to consult Ron's comprehensive tire spreadsheet to select the best overall tire for my application, but right now it has a set of old Falken 315 mounted up and it looks pretty good. I thought they might look a bit cartoonish on the small car, but the sides of the body hide them pretty well. The rear needs to come down a bit..

I'm one of the pickiest critics of vintage mustang hot rod styling there is and I give you the big thumbs up. Really innovative the way you overbuilt the character line to increase width, and having the front fender vent integrated works really well. Surprised it will swallow an 11" wheel. The valence looks good too I think I mentioned it earlier but I hate the standard valences that leave a giant hole in the middle of them with no horizontal surface where the bumper goes.
Mini-lite style wheels always look good. So did Newgen do the nickel brush finish? When I talked to Forgeline last year they said it was too problematic and quit doing it, but it is one of my favorite finishes, too bad its not in my budget.
Love it!

I had the local plater do them for me.
It was taking so long that I told Jon just to give me the powdercoated centers and inner hoops, and that I would handle finishing the outers. I know things were difficult for him and that he didn't want to end up using money from the orders he was taking to finish my wheels instead of the new customers' wheels. I totally elected to finish them on my own. Besides this was a bit of a bro deal where he sold the old set of new Gens for me to make this set, and as we all know, "bro" deals aren't done on the clock or books and things can take longer. Now, I am upset about paying a deposit for $2200 for a different set of wheels and after two years having nothing more than a set of blank forgings which are now my responsibility to turn into wheels. Those that know me know that I'm patient and not easily bothered, but that was the last straw for me. When this other set of wheels, which are updated 18" concave 6 spoke BRM style wheels, are finished, I will be happy so long as they are my wheels and design, and not New Gens.
Okay, sorry for the rant. I've been patient and understanding much longer than I probably should have been. No matter how upset I was I didn't feel like complaining on a public forum, I guess until now. Oh and since I'm ranting, I might as well get it all out before burying it in the middle of updates on the Mustang build. The set of tires that came off my first set of New Gens were sold on Craigslist to a couple friends of mine. Imagine my suprise when they showed up to a track day with the fresh tires they had just purchased and we both discovered they were mine. Yes, that actually happened, no, Jon never finished the BRM style wheels in exchange for selling my tires.

Strope walks over to me at USCA and says "hey Greg... I figure you're the only guy here with a California Duster.... can I borrow it?" Hot Rodders never leave home without one.
Mattman..... THE SALT LICK was awesome BBQ. Kool place. Make sure you check out the 'pit' - the cooks invited me to step back in the kitchen area to check it out. It's visible from the eating area - but it was fun to talk to one of the cooks about it and get a bit closer to the action.

Believe it or not, I had a California duster too. If he knew my car cleaning habits he would have asked me. Mine is barely broken in. Evan who drove up with me in his black '67 had the full compliment of detailing products and didn't use them all weekend. I thought Strope was going to have an aneurism when he saw Evan's dusty black paint.
I'll be in Austin Tomorrow too, at least for part of the day. then we're taking off for somewhere between here, (Austin) and New Orleans. At least I think that's the plan. Perhaps a stop at the Salt Lick is in order, if we have time. Good luck to Adrienne with her interviews this week.

I'm back to working on the car. After going to SEMA, I've found some motivation to put in more hours on it. I finished welding in the cage, mounted a battery tray, built some stainless filler necks, and fabbed up vented mounting housings for transmission and diff coolers in the quarter openings. At some point I also made a gauge cluster, but that was a while ago. Anyway, since I have a picture of that I'll post it up. I'm currently working on the radiator, oil and power steering coolers, so the front will have to get pulled back off, but here is how it's currently sitting.

Looking forward to seeing what you come up with on a shroud and the core support mods. How big is that radiator, looks like it sits pretty low in the chassis. I'm fitting up a 19"x26" that I received from RON SUTTON RACE TECHNOLOGY :D it actually fits pretty well once the wings of the stock opening are cut out.
Nice work Matt, keep at it!

I don't remember the dimensions off the top of my head. I "borrowed" it from my dad's RCR GT40. If I had to guess I would say its 14"x28" or 29" supposed to be good for 600hp. I'm going to have some thick mounting brackets water jetted that will bolt down to the frame rails and onto the core support. I think I'll have the shroud attach to the side mounts so there is plenty of space between the radiator and fans.

What if ... *gasp* I'm not always going to be running with 200 TW tires? I discovered a whole new world last year where you weren't judged for not having back up lights your car never had new, autocrosses lasted longer than 20 seconds and lap times didn't matter. But yes, I will still be using those brakes to flat spot some 200tw tires, although I might also implement a solution for that.
Really though, I lost so much braking force due to caliper flex in the Camaro that I figured I'd just buy expensive brakes once instead of twice. Also, I've been hanging around Ron too much, and was able to justify the cool factor.

Ron had something pretty close, those Brembo GT brakes, but my accent colors are yellowish to goldish in hue like the nickel on the wheels, or the titanium anodizing color on the rotor hats, and Ron's brakes were powder coated bright red, which would have totally clashed and I just couldn't have that. Thanks! I haven't heard anything about weird pulse patterns, but then again, I haven't been researching headers on those motors. I have been thinking of doing a dry sleeve with new pistons and rods to get to 5.3L but I the hassle and expense is worth it for 30 hp.

Yeah I don't see the value in that unless you just like the 5.3 moniker- and I do lol. I've been working with Shaun at AED (one of the best Coyote tuners on the west coast) and he's helping me design some of the parts and pieces I'll need to make it happy. Evidently these engines have an odd firing order that creates a funky pulse pattern between some of the cylinders. The stock headers are a Tri-Y design to capitalize on the pulses and help scavenge. The O2 sensors have to be placed at a specific angle, on a specific plane in the header to allow for optimum tuning. It's been an education to say the least. I'm going to be running the CJ intake as well, but with a mono blade throttle body which according to Shaun is the cat's ass. I guess we'll see. He's talking 500RW with a good intake, the right headers, CJ goodies, and his tune. In our light cars- that's mucho fun time.

Hmm, now that you mention it, I remember reading through the Coyote wiring harness instructions about O2 sensor placement, it told you where to place it, and in the case of long tubes, which primaries to place them in.
500rwhp is an impressive number for a Coyote. I'm shooting for about 460 at the wheels. I plan on using the stock Shelby throttle body because it favors better low rpm air velocity. I'd like to get as much bottom end grunt as possible because these motors are a dog down low.

Ford Racing exhaust cams seem to be fairly popular on the Boss motors, and they do keep the variable valve timing. I talked to Stacy at DSE about the Aluminator XS (which is essentially a Boss 302 engine with 11.5:1 compression, exhaust cams and the Cobra Jet manifold) that they swapped into her FR500S and she said it had much better mid range power than the Roush Yates Boss 302 engine in the '66 Test Car, which has custom ground cams.

Update: I'm in the frigid north right now, where its a hundred degrees colder than it was at the shop, in Escondido, the day before I left.
I gathered a few more parts at the beginning of 2015, most notably these Stainless DSE headers, which are amazing in quality. It's a shame they'll be almost completely hidden when the motor is in.
http://i366.photobucket.com/albums/oo103/69MSA/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zpsd70d808b.jpg (http://s366.photobucket.com/user/69MSA/media/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zpsd70d808b.jpg.html)
I've also continued work on the front end, placing the radiator, power steering and oil coolers, as well as the intake. It has been a ton of work as everything is pretty much custom at this point. I've had to cut and modify coolant expansion tanks and hack up the core support, but after what felt like a thousand hours of taking things on and off repeatedly to check fitment, I'm finally starting to have pieces that look like they might be something some day.
Here is the air box bolted up in its final location. Now I just have to build everything around it.
http://i366.photobucket.com/albums/oo103/69MSA/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zpsffcf539a.jpg (http://s366.photobucket.com/user/69MSA/media/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zpsffcf539a.jpg.html)
The radiator is shorter, but wider than factory, and is supposedly good for 600hp, however, with the location of the valance and coolers, I wanted to make sure that the radiator's air had a dedicated path since it will only be flowing in through the lower grill opening. I also could not leave the airbox bolted on like in this picture
http://i366.photobucket.com/albums/oo103/69MSA/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zpsf173301e.jpg (http://s366.photobucket.com/user/69MSA/media/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zpsf173301e.jpg.html)
I'm building this cover that will become part of the core support. Undo four bolts and you can change out the filter, without taking everything apart, at least in theory.

The radiator actually won't draw any air from in front of the power steering cooler. The PS cooler is mounted 4" forwards and will fit into the the upper grille section. The lower opening will have panelling to make a direct path to the entire radiator. The oil cooler will mount in front inside the lower opening, and will have plenty of space between the radiator for air to flow. We'll be finding out if this plan works the hard way. I could also mount the oil cooler down low and horizontally, in front of the engine, with a protective cover and it's own dedicated fan. Isn't building cars fun?

I've mostly been working on things that will never be seen on the car like a way to mount electric fans, which proved more difficult than usual since there was very little space to work with. The radiator and intake cover will be seen, however, and I do have pics of that.
It's been through a few revisions. The radiator fill cap was supposed to fit through but do to other space issues, it wouldn't work without moving the intake/filter mount.

I plan to beat on it pretty good, (more than the Camaro which has right around 30k on the Odo) even if it has all kinds of heavy, fancy looking metal parts on it and weighs 4000lbs, haha. It'll be fun when it's done. I don't own a trailer, and I hate cleaning wheels. I'll probably get some interesting comments from the car show people, if I ever take it to a car show.

I'll be finishing the odds and ends up tomorrow. Then I might start mocking up ideas for a rear spoiler. The rear body lines between the trunk and end cap pieces are a bit complex and tricky to work with, and if I can't make something that looks like a "could have been" part, I'll just leave it alone.

I also started making what is, hopefully, the last decent sized fab project - a rear spoiler. Ordinarily, I would prefer the clean look without anything on the back of a '65, however the front valance is 2" lower and adds a ton of visual weight, and I felt I needed to do something to the rear to help match that. I like the way the Camaro spoilers bolt on, so I started making something similar.

Yep, stock location. It's a Rick's Vaporworx 22 gallon tank w/corner pickups. Really well made piece! I had them weld the mounting flange up an inch so that I could cut 2.5" out of the tail panel for the diffuser. Now there shouldn't be that much interrupting air flow out the back.

I was thinking of that (the exhaust part ) I don't have a ton of space to get over the torque arm, and even less to get around the watts link brace points pickup points on the frame rails. I also really like the vintage race car look of exhaust exiting just before the wheels , but that could be loud. I might put cats and resonators in, if possible, to help with the noise.
Damn, that took a while just to think about. I think building something custom takes 10x as long, in time and/or $$$ as and aftermarket part that kinda, sorta fits.

Holy Cow----dude, you have become an amazing fabricator!
So impressive, everything that you have done. Especially love that diffuser you've put on the car.
Your training is now complete---indeed you are powerful as the emperor has foreseen. (I just got done watching Star Wars with my son who hasn't seen it till now) Jedi.
D
Thanks Doug! Preparing the children for the new film, you are? (That's my best Yoda type).

Could you run Spintech mufflers under the car so you can do side exit? They make 3 inch thick mufflers.

Another cool update on the Mustang Matt!
Agree with the others to make the spoiler more pronounced. I don't like the Shelby lip that I see others putting on the 65-66 Mustangs so as long as you avoid it looking like that :)

Time for an update. The car currently looks less complete, but we're spraying the spot prime/final prime tomorrow! I also have a rendering, so I all I need is an official project name and I will have a real deal pro touring car in the works.

Gaps in the middle of being worked on. Had to add an inch to the bottom of the fiberglass bumper, and had to cut down an 1/8" off the side of the trunk to get the gaps we wanted. Jon took care of everything else.
Here he is getting to be grumpy (which, I think, makes him happy) about the car not being ready for paint.

Here are some from about a month ago, right before Jon came back to paint the car.

#1 As soon as this thing is painted, or close to it, Jon is heading back to Hawaii. I'm afraid he said he has caught a nasty bout of 'Ovalitus' working on the Ferd, and he needs to go back home and recuperate on the beach.
#2 I hope working on it doesn't kill him.
#3 it's only going to be done "soon" because I need something else to look at and cut up, or because I have so many more ideas that I need to build a V2.0.

Matt's delicate eardrums could not handle the thunder of the Spintech.
What?

Did you install a sissy bar and a passenger seat big enough for me? Vomit bag receptacle? Looks great, love the stance...

Grumpy put in a really good run on it, but he's been looking at it everyday for the last month, and needed a break, so DJ is going to give it the final prime and sand while Jon color sands a red T-Bird... Probably two of his least favorite things, red and a Ford.

Man does it look good with those wide ass tires on the front. I'm excited to see it painted. Good luck, Matt!

Nice Job Matt, did you figure you would be doing this much of it yourself when you started? I like the rendering, its going to look slick.

Trust me, I will always be a member of the pro jackstand club. The more cars I seem to own or build, the more that all of them seem to break, sometimes all at once.

I will forward that quote to Mark Lopez that is going to be doing the interior in September.

I figured it would be easy and that I'd be done in a year. except for body/paint work. I always knew it was difficult to make things smooth and shiny.
