The rear stuff is pretty buttoned up, at least the fab work. I think I will rough in the quarters next, before I send the fenders off to pull molds off of.
There is so much left to go, its kind of overwhelming. Slow and steady.

In the car hobby, it seems we ask ourselves those two questions more times then I'd like to say. Who? and Why?, especially Why? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, I guess. A lot of my crap, I get a lot of hate mail on, and couldn't care less.

Started building the quarters, because the original quarter panel is in place, you can see with the tape measure how much wider the car will get. In the end I still believe it will have an OEM look even with the additional width.

Hell when I see another 66 Mustang Fastback now, I think it doesn't look right, its too flat.

The rear quarters are shaping up nicely Ron, great work! Interesting, my Javelin is also going to be at 73" wide for track width, although looks like your car will be a lot lower than mine. I am shooting for 4.5 - 5" at the firewall to the new frame. I am not sure how I am going to do the fenders yet. At least seeing your car shows me some of the tire coverage issues I will be facing but, I will have plenty of time to figure it out before I get into sheet metal work.

Thanks,
Jon

You're an inspiration Ron, I've been sneakily watching your build for quite a while now. I'm working on a '73 Challenger with a C5 corvette rearend (and V10 up front). I've almost had myself convinced I needed to narrow the suspension mount points and shorten the axles, but these new updates are inspiring me to keep with my original plan to widen the rear quarters ~3" per side. The challengers have a sharp body line and it's gonna be difficult for me to get it to look right, but its only sheetmetal! Keep up the good work!

Did Vince or Greg tell you to ask that? Ron Sutton did the suspension design where he had me take all the rake out of the car. Me knowing I will at least have 1" of rake on the street. Fearing if I made them the same front to back, the car would look like it had Gabriel High Jackers on it when I did put some rake in the car. I lost all my Foghat 8 tracks, so I had to cover the tires a bit in the rear.

Clearly, your skills are awesome, Ron. Your car-centric dietary choices, however, leave a bit to be desired, especially if you're after a slim derriere. Let's consider the rear impact of that Dana bus supporter you've indicated plans for in this thing. I think there's room for some aluminum IRS in this peach of American ingenuity. You have the time.

Kudos on the backbone tranny tunnel--I've got one kinda like that, but less artistically inclined (and lighter). Your output is a model for us all!:weld:

Edit: That steering column clamp is tight!

If Payton is going to post on projects from 3 years ago, so am I. Finished the welding on the chassis tonight, can you say congested. Trophy truck comes to mind, turned out really good, thank God for chromoly or this thing would be 4000 pounds

Looks so busy and heavy I know, but that whole backbone, with all those bars probably weighs less then 20lbs., 1.25" chromoly .057 wall for the win. Now the Dana..... yeah she's a bit chubby. And if I don't find a muffler soon I'm going to have to call Dave and see if I can use his MUFFLEBOX!!! Just saying that makes me giggle.

Tape? Is this car going to wear makeup instead of paint? Tack it and hit it with a hammer. Next panel . . .

Let's see the engine placement, when you get a chance. Rear weight bias may be a thing here--good for your 335s. And (don't ever begin a sentence with "and") by the way, thank you for helping the world to understand the meaning of front-mid-engine one crazy car at a time.

On a serious (not my bag) note, the chromeoly tubing is amazing. You're close to bicycle frame wall thickness there, so your inner structure (and roof-high weight) should be pretty awesomely light. My steel bikes are lighter than the aluminum/carbon one, but the aluminum one does have six inches of suspension travel . . .

Are you using your TIG machine for the silicone bronze or MIG brazing it?

57hemicuda

I thought I was going to tig it, because I had never heard of silicone bronze mig wire. I You Tubed silicone bronze because I have never used it before, apparently in Europe migging bronze is a very common method for installing body panels. Everything I saw on You Tube was from Britain, and none of my weld suppliers had ever heard of bronze mig wire. I did get some off of Amazon, and will try it. I will be surprised if it works the way I want, but here's hoping.

It makes welding tin to tube pretty easy. you will need to run a long 3/4 stitch about 1.5 to 2" apart. i am not sure how the Mig will work but we use it a bit with the tig.

I got a roll of 023. and a roll of .030, I know when you try to run aluminum wire though a mig machine it sucks, unless you have a push pull machine or a spool gun. I'm hoping the bronze pushes OK, I'll let you know as soon as I try it. Have a couple more days of tinning to do before I make sparks. Wire came from Amazon

Love when I get to repurpose old parts on to new projects. Found this steering stabilizer bracket off an old 66 Bronco I used to have. Love the fact that the bracket still has Duff's stamped on it (of James Duff Bronco Parts), used it for the start of my muffler hangers. The bad part about an underslung frame is you have no place to hang anything.

The one time when high and tight on the cage was a bad thing. The engine is back so far, and the dash bar so tight, their was absolutely no room for wipers or linkage.

The AMX was originally equipped with vacuum wipers which was located about where the middle of the intake manifold is now.The engineering involved in making this happen was extensive. Used Fox body Mustang wiper motor because I thought it would be readily available, all the rest of the mechanism was custom. The park position was another challenge because the motor was designed for the PCM to park it.

A lot of work but the modern motor work way better then anything old.

Too bad about the bolt on being heavier. I am trying more of a tab on body that will allow freedom during construction and then be permanent at the end of construction. This is my inspiration!

Mega fabrication, love the project. What are you using for headers? They show up around page 37 but didn't see where you made them or mention aquiring. Are they lower than the blowproof flange?

57hemicuda
06-14-2018, 03:29 PM
The headers are Stainless Works C5 parts. Got them off the Vette Forum for $150 because someone cut the collector flange lip off which was cool with me. They are way higher then the blowproof flange. Because they are for a torque tube they run a little tight to the transmission. In this car that's perfect because of the space limitations.

Scratch
06-14-2018, 07:22 PM
Thanks for the answer. High and tight is what I need for the same reasons you point out. Tried a set for a c6, they occupy the same space as the transmission needs to. Unfortunately didn't get a deal like you, my experiment was ordered from stainless works!

57hemicuda
06-15-2018, 04:54 AM
I did end up having to notch the blowproof due to the tightness. If you look at the Weld/Sutton build on here, it looks like the collectors fell in right about the same location.

Hand controls Dave, no room for a pedal!

Drive by wire Corvette pedal, it just came in, its in the back seat of Dawn's Jeep. I'd show it if I had it. Plenty of room as long as I wear ballot slippers.....I wish I would have moved the engine back another 12"

Believe it or not, I actually got a chance to start working on this hot rod again, fitting the fiberglass quarters. Hoping it will jump start my interest again. Making all the mounting fins is tedious and boring, so maybe not.

Passenger side is pretty much done, drivers side is fitted, still have a few fins to install. For fiberglass this stuff is amazing, fit and finish wise

That made me laugh - but agree on the progress. Do something everyday! I just need to take my own advice!

Because of the square tubing style chassis, it becomes difficult to snake the fuel and brake lines front to back. When I built the chassis I installed a raceway for the the lines to hide in.

I needed a way to retain the #8 line, so the little tabs are just a place for an aluminum zip tie to loop through to keep lines retained and out of harms way. A billet guy like yourself would have fabricated some billet stand off, I am a keep it simple stupid guy, and didnt want to worry about retainers coming loose, and lines dragging the ground

Unfortunately my love for old Power Wagons has had me building them in between my touching this car. Just finished bending the cage in the truck, turned out really nice.

That's awesome work as usual, Ron. Glad to see that you're back here getting lost in the details. Nobody needs a hotrod at reality show speed . . .
