I thought after the procedure you were having a "grey scotch", and I was thinking whats "grey scotch", then I saw the word "brite"? LOL

I did a double take at that one too! Glad I'm not the only one.

BTW, Hope that procedure was uneventful and all is well.

Almost finished the intake last nite, need to do the water pump still, so I taped off the exhaust around the headers this morning. I then realized I've had these headers since 2000 and have never bolted them on to the engine .... guess I'm not alone amongst the gearheads?
So ... not too exciting, but the POR is soaking into the Al intake (3 coats) so I may spray the heads after masking off and see if there is a primer I can use first to help with coverage, who knows?

She's ORANGE

http://img835.imageshack.us/img835/5684/120602597.jpg
Headers bolted on for the first time!

While the intake is drying I'm gonna get the underside of the deck lid cleaned off and maybe spray some epoxy later today .... supposed to have severe thunder storms and HAIL? today :(

I hope not cuz I just got my trunk outa the body shop Friday from the last hail storm, new hood and paint and PDR on the roof.

Continued .....

That's a pretty killer looking motor in my opinion. I love the sbc orange against the aluminum, and the intake is really intriguing me. I fought smoke stains on mine last summer trying several products by spot treating it for effectiveness.
When all is said and done I could have just pulled it and reblasted it. When I painted the motor it did cross my mind to do the intake.

Did I read you are using POR in different colors or am I imagining that?

I take it you are really a fan of the POR products?

I am looking to select a really tough black for the undercarriage and other areas. I do not want to spray it in some areas though to avoid the risk of under masking and getting overspray.

Thanks .... yes I am using different colors of POR, silver for the body work and then cover that with their Chasis Coat Black (knowing you covered everything with change of colors) and of course Chevy Orange for the motor.
As long as you use their Prep and Ready and Marine Clean this stuff will last forever

I will reduce their black and spray my undercarriage and then a liner spray for texture and reduce chips/ sound deadener.

Did the underside of the trunk and then it's blowing and raining outside of course ... and what's up with the METRIC bolts in the latch? :( repop!

Ready for epoxy.

So I'm gonna keep going and get the cowl stripped and ready for epoxy.

When you are painting in your laundry room etc are you brushing it on with those results? If you are I am more impressed with either you or the product.

It looks surprisingly smooth and glossy so I have to ask how you are laying it down.

I want to paint/coat my floor 1st without masking everything inside/out. I have a rear diff and new leaf springs I want to do too as far as black goes right now.

It's mostly the POR  ... I have found that if you use a foam brush it lays down smoother and I use the laundry room to keep crap out of the finish. You have to lay down two coats min just as the POR is tacky it will take ....if you let it dry you have to use their Self Etching Primer or a grey scotch brite to get the bite for additional coats.

I can't see doing the undercarriage by brush :willy: so I'll buy their reducer and spray on the black.

Hey thanks 67goatman455 ... my motivation comes from wanting to drive my Camaro  I am realistic and know not everything will work the first time and that's hot rodding, but I'll do my best to minimize the down time by doing it right the first time.

Got the cowl finished today and I thought maybe I'd be able to spray epoxy later but the wind is kicking and it's spitting again ... maybe tomorrow.

There is always a first for everything right?

Got everything prepped for some epoxy this morning and as I got ready the heat increased, man it's gotta be 90 out right now, but the epoxy laid down nice. It's a milestone to get some parts in epoxy, it's gonna be cool to see the body ready for primer
The cowl was a PITA to sand the inside, so much that I cut my arm and was bleeding all over the cowl, then I had to clean all the spots of blood off :( But the cowl came out great and looks nice on the car ... just gotta keep going.

in the garage with the DeWalt discing some of the interior panels. Between the garage being around 90 degrees and the smell of lacquer thinner to clean the undercoating I was starting to hallucinate, so only a couple hours stay time.

Rust on the inside of the quarter :(
http://img585.imageshack.us/img585/8720/120606634.jpg
Got both sides down to metal.

The inside of the quarter panel has rust issues and I'm not sure how to take care of that ( I really don't want to do full quarters) ... the more I dig the more rust I find
Think I'm gonna have to invest in a sand blaster ... suggestions?

Thanks for looking...

Roberts68

A small sandblaster isn't a bad investment. Do you have enough air to run one is another question? A guy where I used to work had a very small pistol grip style with a hopper on top. Try searching spotblaster, that might be the trade name.

The pot style are cfm consuming beasts and when I borrowed one 2 decades ago is what prompted me to buy my 6.5hp/60gal upright. It has served me pretty well but there are far more impressive compressors out there... albeit they are 4 times the investment and up.

I wanted to ask what primer you are using. I was recommended Dupont dp90 tonight and I don't know anything about primers/paints to speak of.

Where inside the quarter are there rust issues? Around the wheel well lip?

The rust issues can be seen in the photos above, the inside of the quarters up high above the wheelwells, you can also see the rust when you look up straight up from the wheelwells.

Yeah I don't have the cfm to run a pot blaster, I have been getting by with a 3hp, someday I would like to upgrade to a 6hp 60 gal 230/1, but that is another big purchase I need to save up for ....

I am using Acme Finish1 epoxy made be Martin Seymour and sold at our NAPA, it is a really nice product and lays down nice. I have used Martin Seymour primers before and they are high quality - hate to pay for just a name such as Dupont.

Mine were rotten around the wheel well opening. Every where else, with the exception on the drivers quarter at the rear window filler panel, was rust free. Your's look no where near as rusted as mine did. Quite frankly, I'm not seeing any rust issues from your pictures

.....Quite frankly, I'm not seeing any rust issues from your pictures

From the inside look where the courtesy light would be mounted in the sail panel ... that's rust on the inside of the quarter. And when I removed the wheel wells .... there's a picture of the inside of the quarter through where the wells were. AND ... the driver's side quarter where it meets the rear window channel I'm gonna have to replace that angle part cuz of rust ... it's pretty thin and bubbled. :(
Not sure if I can get that blasted or not, sure gonna try that first, we'll see.

Went to the GG car show yesterday and saw some awesome cars and meet some nice folks ... and took a lot of pictures. And then I came home and got to work on mine

Took some pixs of the quarter panel channel with the rust ... I'm gonna try and cut out the rust and break out my shrinker/ stretcher and follow the quarter panel down to the filler panel. Worse case scenario I replace the quarter :willy:

I know I have not posted in awhile ... it's field season and as a Fisheries Biologist that means you are in the field.
I have been working on a project that will help biologists determine species composition of their waters ... it's a tethered ROV (remote operated vehicle with video, lights and thrusters) that can be deployed from the boat and in conjunction with the sonar surveys provide live video (FISH PORN) back to the surface. We tested the ROV couple days ago and it works:thumbsup:  ,I made the cage outa 3/16 Al but .... I need to make some larger fins to stabilize the cage but she works and that's kool

Anyway, today was 102 and I spent most of the day getting ready for epoxy primer on the NOS fenders when it cooled off ..... mark time 2045 and tha's cuz I was running outa light. I didn't have enough primer to do the inside but I got the bare steel in primer and that's a good day.

Thanks .... I don't think a GI Joe would fit inside! BUT ... it is fun to control (read - addicting) the ROV or just let it sit and have the fish swim by the ROV.

Fish species varies with body of water, we are gonna use the ROV to keep track of KOKanee in our large res that we take spawn. But the ROV can be used for various missions.

Man it is HOT and working in the garage is like an oven .... when I grow up I will have A/C and heat in my garage
Any way .... not much happening, got back from Utah yesterday and got in the garage today to prep my doors for some epoxy, one done and one left. Man I am glad it's not a four door :willy:

My boys are coming out here in a few weeks and I need to clean out their rooms ... I have been storing parts in their rooms  where else can I keep parts clean and organized, right? So I need to get some epoxy on the doors and hang them, bolt the trunk lid on, put the door skin, dash and filler panel in my room I guess

I still need to do the jambs ... that lacquer paint just gums up when you try sanding it off, so paint remover is required!

OK this is not a paid advertisement for this eco friendly paint remover ... but this stuff works great! Couple hours after applying I just wiped off the gunk with a shop towel and then hit the paint with a wire brush and whola - the paint left just lifted off, so I hit it with the fiber disc and the rest just came off :woot:

It's funny that you asked ... cuz I just so happen to have pixs of the dash strip. So this is how I did the dash

I first put a good coat of the citrus stuff on (don't use your hand w/ nitrile gloves cuz you don't have a paint brush) and wait bout two hours, wipe the goo off w/ a shop towel and then use the wire brush and cross hatch the area and the paint comes off. I used a fiber disc on the DeWalt to finish the hard areas and it leaves scratches for the epoxy to adhere to.
Here's a couple pixs of the dash undergoing the strip

http://img801.imageshack.us/img801/2062/120707959.jpg
Put a good layer on w/ a paint brush
http://img576.imageshack.us/img576/8547/120707960.jpg
Wipe off and then wire brush.

I used a fiber disc to scratch the metal clean

That's how I did it .... if it is too thin and starts to dry it doesn't work as well ... just put another layer on that spot and she's good.

Hope that helps all

sprayed on all the parts, now just the body is left:thumbsup:

So at 1000 it's 70 out and the humidity is 67%, thought I was back in CT for awhile, I'm degreasing the parts and I'm sweating like a pig so I wore a t shirt around my head while I was spraying.

I had to get going cuz the humidity was only going up so I put the car in the driveway and hung the fenders and extensions, the dash and the doors and mixed up some epoxy and got going.

Even with the humidity the epoxy laid down nice, only one run

Anyway here is the pixs of the garage full of parts.

Here is what I did last nite ... finished the A pillars and the upper weatherstrip channel and found a little triangle to show the factory people where to put the studs for the molding, thought that was cool

And with the rain gutters cleaned to metal I can see RUST between the roof and the gutter  . I know what that means .... replace the roof after POR15 all the reinforcements .... GRRRRRRRRRRRRR!

Take a look.

WoW!!! Thats a lot of work!!

Im just thinking...did you ever tought about an acid bath or something? Followed by electrodeposit primer or the like? I saw that done a few times and to take care of all the rust like you seem to be wanting to do it might have been the ticket!! Not sure it would have come that expensive, and it would have covered every spec of rust!! I consider myself a little asking on quality work but when it comes to getting to EVERY little spot...Man, it just never can be done. You really seem to want to get every inch done so i wonder if that system crossed your mind or not.

Great job so far! Keep it up! You are one patient dude!

primer on the door jambs, sills and the rocker panels :woot: Had to get up at o dark thirty, actually around 0630 and get the car wiped off and get going before the garage got too hot.

Came out alright ... had a couple runs no biggy thou, now I can hang the doors and get the other parts set in place and outa my boys bedroom.

I didn't mask off anything off .... a grey scotch brite will take care of the over spray (the floor will get epoxy and then Lizard skin anyway). There will be more high fill primer coming later so no biggy.

It's a good day when parts come in, been gone all week and my AMD side cowls are here ... so now I can finish the cowl and the firewall!

Man do they fit 110% better than those other (China made) ones, so I had to fit them and see what the car looks like with side cowls ( I forgot) I am glad the AMD parts fit, should have ordered them from the beginning ... I now know there is an AMD dealer here in town that will get all my business fer sure.

The driver's side cowl doesn't quite have the same curvature as the upper cowl piece, but that is not a deal breaker just means I have to work with it .... BFH :unibrow:

I was working with the stripping gel today on my inner fender wells and let's just say when it's 100 out there is NO SUCH THING AS GEL  It turned to liquid so I let it dry and scrapped it with the wire brush and most of the paint came off, I'll work on them early before it gets too hot again !!!!!!

sandblasting doesn't get ALL the rust! This is my inner fender that was sandblasted in 2002 and painted with epoxy primer and replaced on the car.

As you can see the areas that were sandblasted and epoxied are fine but .... the rust continued from between the panels

So I drilled out the spot welds and cleaned everything and I will put some POR15 on the areas tomorrow when I can get the time for two coats and the final black. Then I'll weld her up and all is good with this one, the other one needs a patch fabricated and the same steps to stop the rust.

Thanks ... gotta do it right or not at all!

I am using an epoxy primer called Finish 1 under Acme label which is made by Martin Senour and sold through NAPA, really good stuff w/o paying for a label if you know what I mean. If it's good enough for Steve Davis' (president of Barrett Jackson) 64 Ford Fairlane it's good enough for little ol me.

Got the first coat of POR15 on the inners and just waiting for the second coat.

What sort of wait time do you find works well between coats?
I picked up some POR15 recently partly because of the inspiring work you are doing here and sharing with us.
I'm going to start with my floor pans prior to Eastwoods' thermo-coustic barrier. They aren't rusty but I will be exposing a lot of metal and want a brush on product.

I was just out in the garage putting on the second coat of POR15 on my inner fenders and it was just tacky at 3 hours since the first, I'll let it dry overnight and then I can scuff the POR sections and top coat with POR black and she should be good for another 45 years

If you plan to do your floor pans I would break up the pans into quarter sections and do just a section both coats and then move to another section after that one dries .... just so you know you got coverage and you're not missing anything. If you had another color you could change colors and that is a sure sign that you got everything covered. That is why I use silver and then top with chassis black POR ... just a thought!

Had a couple hours in the garage to get the inner fender welded back to OEM without the rust!

This is what a little TLC and a couple hours can do to refurb your inner fender wells. Hopefully I can get back out in the garage later and start on the other inner ... same rust spots and it needs a patch welded in the corner.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it's better to say something now before you get into structural parts of the car, your welds do not look good:)
It's hard to tell without being there in person, but the welds either look as if you do not have enough wire speed, not enough gas or the metal isn't cleaned well enough. Also, you ground too much metal away when you ground down the welds. On the photo of the ground welds, you can see you did not get penetration into the surrounding metal. It doesn't look as if you are using the proper technique for rosette welds, as well as the what I mentioned above.

I see what you are looking at with the welds ... the first pix is the only one with rosette welds! The last two are the back of the plug welds (with a copper backer) to fill in the drilled holes when I removed the panel from the other panel .... make sense? I then welded to this plug from the top panel.

I assure you I will finish the back of the plug welds with some heat before I call it done.

For safety I put a 24 led light meant for trailers and such and now I have retina burning brake and tail lights  May need a 3rd revision to smooth out the corners.

I will have a full box of rolocs ready and waiting if you want to get some more thoughtless therapy under my Camaro.:wow:

Actually, again you inspire me with your work. On that note, rather than prolonged procrastination I am about to place an order for rolocs, thin cutoff wheels and some spot weld cutters. I get a nice price with a local tool vendor so no driving and they should be delivered tomorrow.

I bought this 2001 Honda XR650R in '03 and have 8 years on her with a little over 15,500 miles on her ... would not trade the rides I have for anything. I mainly use it for commuting and going from pavement to dirt for fishing expeditions.

Thanks .... there is more to come!

OK ... I am back, STAT511 is over and I need to get going on my car before STAT512 starts in Jan.

Just thought I would put a picture of my dad's car on my post and some history... or as I remember!
http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/1848/63stude.png

The car is a 1963 Studebaker Lark 4 speed, 289 ci. with the R-2 option which was a Paxton Supercharger addition. Seems the 1964 Avanti would have this option and the powers to be decided to option this R-2 to those in 1963 to get publicity for the Avanti.

I can remember dad starting the car with a can of ether and man did she move, remember speed limits back then were 75 and I can remember 90 cruising all day on the interstate. My Grandmother lived in Albuquerque and we would take the 5 hour trip up to visit quite often, and she had a Champagne 63 4 door for the kid's to ride in when we were there visiting. Grandma sold her Studebaker for a 72 Mercury Comet and gave the car to us to drive, the Comet is what I remember driving.

My dad sold the Lark back in 74 or 75 to make a payment on the land, just as my brother and I were coming of driving age :( Anyway, the buyer still in Silver City, seems he owned a car dealership back in the day and my brother asked if he had any pictures of the Studebaker. This is the only one known to my family.

My sister made copies of this picture and gave me one during Thanksgiving weekend ... which is pretty cool.

Now time to heat up the garage and get to work.

OH ... my brother still owns the Comet!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the story Chief. Glad your Sis thought to give you a pic for a keepsake.

Since we are at relatively similar climates, is your garage stone cold when you heat it up for work? Or... do you maintain a "low" temp?

I am curious about condensate mostly especially with exposed bare metal. I have issues with the big temp swing using a torpedo heater. I look forward to using a hanging gas heater soon if I can make it happen.

Yes, I am really glad she gave me a picture, since we never had a camera when I was young ... there are no pictures of cool cars.

The garage was outside temp today when I started .... around 34 and I ran the little torpedo heater for 30 minutes and got the garage temp around 50 probably. No worries about condensation here, my whole car has been metal for awhile and there is not rust anywhere.

So .... working in the garage (lots of layers) got the cowl almost ready for final fitment and welding. I made the brace for the front to ensure all was on the same plane and worked the side cowls to get her close. The driver side was not close (told AMD too) the curve was too high on the stamp so I had to cut and BFH the side to conform to the original piece. The passenger side is almost perfect

http://imageshack.us/a/img853/1507/1212151645.jpg
Made a gig and welded it to the firewall ... all is straight now.
http://imageshack.us/a/img402/4731/1212151644.jpg
Had to slice the side w/ BFH to conform, almost there.
http://imageshack.us/a/img525/8362/1212151639.jpg
The inside look .... it's close

Well, I got out there and got something done ... but the temps are dropping fast, it's 34 out now and the garage isn't much more.

Thanks for looking ...

So .... taking care of more rust I got the cowls fitting pretty good and this inner piece that has the hinge support has been causing me to lose sleep :(
so I got after it today! The shelf had a mouse house in there and that didn't help one bit ........... the plan, cut it out and POR everything
and weld it back in so I don't have to do this again!

That's CHIEF! Crossing The Line is the ceremony for crossing the equator, where a previously inducted sailor known as a SHELLBACK bring slimy POLYWOGS up against King Neptune's court to answer charges.

I never crossed the equator, I did however cross the Arctic circle a few times on board a submarine

My Lincoln MIG is a SP100, I had to think on this one ..... I bought this welder back in '96/'97 and have used the heck out of it, sometimes I wished I'd bought a welder in the 180/200 amp range. The 100 amp is rated for up to 12 ga with CO2/Argon mix you could go thicker with multiple passes, but for the auto body stuff it does just fine

Made a close out panel for the passenger side front cowl and got that welded in nice.

Made some close out panels for some holes in the firewall that would not be used and got those welded .... figured with the cowl still out I can get to the backside easier

The column braces are OEM, DII just put a 3/8 nut in the cowl instead of the 5/16 ... no biggy.

Some progress today started fitting everything to the firewall / cowl to get this thing welded .... not something to take lightly when the cowl, side cowls and the upper dash are new to the car. Paranoid? Maybe.

So I welded the driver's side bracket that holds the dash to the hinge pillar and the support I cut outa the middle (by the speaker bracket) and used clamps to hold everything. installed the brake booster, steering column, E brake and bolted the old upper dash to the dash and I have a larger gap on the driver's side dash to pillar then the passenger side .... hmmm. I even installed the kick panels to check the gap ... OCD?

That bracket gets welded to my new patch I made ... and the dash has to move towards the driver's side. Take it all apart and shorten that bracket some to let the dash come over .... that's for tomorrow thou.

The welder trigger that is .... took everything back apart and took that bracket off and put everything back together (w/ old dash top for reference) and got the gap equal on both sides ... probably better than GM did  Measured a gazillions times again and got some heat on the top cowl and then took my time to get the firewall attached to the cowl, did not warp anything ... and that's a good day.

Anyway, here are some pics, I'll finish dressing the welds another day ... have some homework to do now!!

Something is off on my car and I can't figure out exactly what it is. Fitting fenders, doors and hood shouldn't be this difficult, but it is on my car. I'm thinking, right now, that I may have to break the quarter loose in the door jamb area and see if there isn't some adjustment there. When I installed these NOS quarters, I got them to fit as tight as they could to the inner structure and to the doors.

What shape are your quarters in the door jamb area? If I had it to do all over again, I would not have removed the door jamb area, even with NOS quarters. I have been over this car measuring all over the place. All measurements and visuals show my quarters are dead on. From looking at pictures at other car's, the rockers seem a bit different than mine. It appears, from looking at pictures, my factory installed rockers are shaped slightly different than most. I can't get my fenders to align to the rockers and doors at the same time. I can only get one or the other:bang:

Have you already removed the original door skins without aligning the fenders to the original doors? If you already have, you may have opened Pandora's Box

I did the GM fenders (w/shims) before I tore the car apart. The door skins are not tall enough to fit w/ some slack like OEM.

I do not plan on removing the quarters ... the jamb area is great, it 's the areas up high (behind the sail panel) w rust and of course the lower trunk drop off area.

Good luck with aligning ... sorry I can't help!

That has been a problem with repop door skins for a while. Some have enough room to move the skin around, but then some don't. AMD seems to be a good company to work with, so I'm somewhat confident they will get it worked out for you.

Man I wish I could get some help on this front cap. I haven't even touched it lately. I moved on to cleaning up the cowl and welding on my dash top. My dash top was the first panel I removed from my car and was the last I replaced. I removed the dash completely from the car the other day because I think someone put a gallon of paint just on the dash. I wasn't interesting in spending a day or two just stripping paint from it. I'm going to sandblast it this week and get it welded back in.

Luck, it seems, is the only thing I'm gonna be able to have to get this cap lined up to my liking.

Too bad you and I don't live closer to one another. We could, together, have our cars moving at a tortoise pace rather than the snails pace we've been moving at.

Did you replace your body bushings? Did you fit your doors first before you took off your quarters? I like to leave on the doors when I do quarters. Makes it a lot easier and then you know its all good. Some pictures would be helpful.

Yes, solid bushings. Doors were fitted, but after the new quarter install, they were removed and not put back on for some time. With that lapse in time, I have not been able to get the fenders to fit the doors.

when it's snowing and too cold to work in the garage? You work inside, specifically the workshop (aka bathroom) and polish the front door glass. It's kinda messy and you need water so .... use the tub and pad with some towels  I ordered the Eastwood kit and it showed up yesterday so figured I'd put it to good use.

I did not have the window roller nut tool .... so the rear glass didn't get polished. I will order the tool and replacement stuff and get those done soon.

I was very pleased with the results ... it's takes awhile (patience) but well worth it  The directions say to make a paste consistency of toothpaste .... I used a touch more water and just kept the polisher moving and kept it watery and don''t let it dry. It's only a 3" polishing pad that I put on my 7" polisher.

And since I was polishing in the tub I kept rinsing with water to check the results... slow speed on the polisher = 600rpm, just go slow and keep it moist.

Yeah I didn't read the writeup on the deep scratch kit cuz I didn't need it. I have to replace the front windshield and back glass, I would like to be able to see out of them ... know what I mean?

I might go with Auto City Classic's over sized glass to get rid of the trim and have it more like today"s cars, we'll wait and see.

get those little retainers out of the headliner headers? I tried to get these out when I was cleaning up the metal on the interior and they would not come .... now with the roof off I can see how they work.

So I took a flat chisel and just popped it with a rubber mallet and they came out the bottom, kool. I know most people will never get this far with their car but that's how to get them out. Luckily the header part is galvanized and just needs cleaning.

Finish with the POR15 on the front header that was rusted and the rest just cleaned up with the fiber disc .... which was really good. Took most of the day to prep and spray two medium coats but it is done and came out good.

I sprayed the firewall, inside both the side cowls, top and bottom of the roof bows, drip rails, package tray and the back seat area of the quarters.

On to some pictures ... mostly one color now :headspin:

I will go Ride Tech all the way ... just buy the whole package deal and I won't' have to worry about things not fitting. Probably won't go triple adjust on the shocks ... just don't see the need for a street car.

If I win the lottery ... there may be changes :relax:

Got the roof up on top of the car by myself what a PITA, basically pulled it up to the top by sliding it across the cowl (which is lined w/ wool blanket) and then ducking inside the car and kept inching it up to lay down w/o sliding off the car. Man this roof is heavy and there is no handles!

Overall the fit is good the roof looks a little wider and may have to trim (contour) some off the drip rails. Started to work on the front corners get it to lay flat on the bows and in the rails, it would fit into one side, but not both ..... needs work of course.

So I did some slicing and body hammer and it's closer, think I need to get the rails narrower so she lays into the drip rail channel without forcing it.

Anyways ... here are the pictures of the AMD roof skin straight outa the box.

http://imageshack.us/a/img818/656/1304152019.jpg
Drip rail is close but too wide and will need to be trimmed!

Roof skin is real close in the back and the front will require most of my time and effort. Need to get this roof skin spot on before I tackle the quarters ... cuz then I have to lift the roof skin and put the quarters under the lip like the factory did in 67.

Thanks for looking ... more to come.

Nice to see you have your top hat on! All the big holes are getting closed up. glad it fits pretty well some need to be sliced above the quarter to make them fit.
Thanks for asking.Feeling pretty good, going to make a small table to put the trans on and get it ready for paint.

Been under the weather lately, literally .....it snowed for four days and left 18 inches last week and then the sun came out and there is very little snow left. But there is a chance for snow again today, huh ?

Worked on the front corners of the roof a little, couple slices and some hammering. My AMD rep reported that his people are measuring some door skins for me and they will be here this week ....they better fit, cuz I need to reference the door before I take off the quarters.

And I ordered Chassisworks' Mini Tubs w/ closeout panels  they should be here this week also!!!

Thanks

The roof skin on my '68 was exactly the same. I ended up having to trim both drip rails. The rear window corners were a major PITA. Ultimately I ended up cutting the window channel corners free from the roof, reshaping it, and adding in a pie shaped wedge to fill in the gaps vacated when I pulled the corners in.

It also seemed a little "short" from front to back. I ended up welding a few 3/4 washers to the window channel in front and back, then used ratchet straps to stretch everything into place. It worked fantastic to pull everything into place, and as an added bonus put a good bit of tension on the metal preventing much of the oilcanning I've noticed on some replaced roof skins.

Rhino ... seems I have the length ok. Hey, did you use the factory trim around the front and back? Did you fit the radius on the corners to see if the roof would match up? Been thinking of digging mine out and doing just that ... before I weld. I may have to cut out corners to get it to lay flat also ... we'll see, thanks.

Thanks ... this roof will require some thought, multiple angles of the dangles and radius to match the window dressing.

Very good point, and something I had driven far from my memory :)
I did buy my trim ahead of time and test fitted the contour of it to the roof skin. I'm really particular to how the window trim fits and was appalled by the gaps right out of the box.
Seeing how poorly the two fit prior to any modification is what drove me to rebuilding the corners.

I highly suggest everyone read this site. It is completely unnecessary to cover an entire panel in sound deadener...

http://sounddeadenershowdown.com/how-to/install-cld-tile%E2%84%A2

I'm a car audio nut from way back and all these builds where everyone covers every square inch of a panel is only adding more weight to the vehicle and spending more money than needed.

Jeremy ... I've read something similar to this website before, and I read this one also. I like his use of tiles to cover 25% and then the mass loaded vinyl, I planned to use Spectrum on the inside quarters and the sail panel cuz it sprays to cover. I will spray the roof just cuz it's not installed yet.

I'm not real familiar with the products like Lizard Skin. Those types of products are relatively new to the market. I haven't messed around with car audio very much since the early 2000's, so haven't kept up with the market.

One thing we have to remember is we are not building a Mercedes. There's a lot of great builds on this site as well as others. I think we are getting to a point where we are trying to refine our cars to meet the standards of such brands as Mercedes, BMW, etc.. To each his own though. For me, I like to add some refinements to our old steel, but still keep the car true to its roots.

With that said, I do plan to use UPol Raptor liner underneath my car and in the trunk area. I also plan to use Dynamat Xtreme along with a CCF. I'm keeping the jute padding on my carpet and not utilizing anything like MLV. That stuff is extremely heavy. If I were building a stereo system on wheels, then I'd go all out. However, its not really necessary for my build as well as many others.

I wasn't even aware that Chassisworks made tub kits. Having those prefab closeout panels will definitely save a lot of time.

I think the system I have put together weighs in around 135# including the wiring. Not everyone is into audio like myself, I understand that. We all have different goals for our cars. I come from a musician background, so music is a huge part of who I am. I don't play in any bands anymore, but still like to have a nice system. This is the first audio system I have done in nearly 10 years, so I'm anxious to get it and the damn car done!

What color are you planning to do on your car or have you decided on that yet?

That is what I thought .... and then I got to cutting and stopped to check where these close out panels were gonna fit, I think they sent me a staggered shock close out :bang: :bang: instead of same side shocks.

Those are indeed 68-9 closeout panels. You'll either have to come up with our own on the drivers side or check to see if they sell a panel and will swap for the 67. DSE's tubs were for 68-9 only and I had to add a strip to the tub to fill the hole they left due to the staggered shock

The last sales rep that tried to pull that BS on me got ripped. I get so sick and tired of hearing these reps say that I'm the only one to ever report such an issue. Nonetheless, you can still use the kit. You will just have to modify the one closeout for that side and add a small strip of metal to the tub. You can look back through my thread and see where I did all that.

We decided to wait til my outer wheel houses come to see where everything lines up with my car, if I want to return them he's OK with that,
or we can see about making them work. He hadn't worked on a non-staggered shock Camaro and didn't know about the closeouts
not fitting .... does now!

Chris also offered to make my closeouts for my Camaro if I send him a scanned jpg of what I need.... A+++++ rating from me.

So,I'll wait til my outer wheel houses come in and go from there, back on to the roof issues.
