Great car. Engine just rebuilt by Tony Oddo. http://www.toeperf.com/aboutus.htm . Jerico 4 speed, rack and pinion steering, 4 wheel disc brakes, fire bottle etc. This car is sorted and trouble free, makes sound at Laguna Seca, show quality paint etc. Stielow and Jody have driven it and can attest to just how well this car works. .. SOLD

This is a great car and a blast to drive! I passed so many cars in the Mustang we lost track. Jody and I were laughing so hard we almost stopped. If I had the loose cash now I would purchase it for my girlfriend Laura to keep her out of my Camaro.

Good grip, nice to drive lots of power the Jeroco is a blast. This car is selling for well less than half of what it would cost to build.

Thanks Jody -- I saw the car at Charleys this summer... and you're right -- the paint is like show quality. He doesn't know it yet, but I stole it from him! HAHAHAHA

Now if I just knew how to drive.... but we digress... As Charley just told me "everyone started as a beginner". Pretty true statement.

I just asked Charley if I could reach the pedals! If he and Jody can drive it -- it will need a minor remodel for me!

I figure.... lower the dash... lower the wheel.... scoot seat forward a foot.... and raise it... a 2X4 duct taped to the loud pedal...

Greg, in case you have not done a track event yet. Prepared to be hooked!

I've done the ZO6 experience (3 day) at Bondurant and the ZO6's at Spring Mountain... I totally get how addictive it is... and how much fun it is! I almost bought one of the fox body mustangs Bondurant was selling when they switched to Chevrolet - and have kicked myself ever since for passing that opportunity.

I think this is WAY too much car for me... but couldn't pass it up. I've seen it - and it's too nice not to grab! Now I'll just have to not embarrass myself more than I already have.....

I was looking at the safety requirements for the Northern California Shelby Club Thunderhill event... and noticed that I had to have cotton pants (long) in Yellow, Red and Green.... Also a long sleeve cotton shirt - same colors..... and a 4 point harness in Green....

Immediately I'm on the horn with Rodger Lee asking why I'd have to have a seat belt in Green - like WTF difference that would make?? And were was I going to find cotton pants in Yellow, Red and Green.... look like a GD Eyetallian flag out there! Sheesh!!!

Then I'm emailing Charley about the color of the harness.....

RING RING -- Cell phone is going.... belly laughter on the other end so I know it's Charley.... Calling me to tell me what a dumbass newb I am....

Rodger probably was going to call but he had to go home and get clean shorts.... he probably laughed so hard...

 :willy: :woot:

1 question can you run historic events with this car or do they only allow the real cars with proven history?

No...Most historic events only allow cars with race history. The Shelby Club tends to let cars like this in at their big events and I wish they wouldn't. My Shelby still has drum rear brakes and Ford front disc etc. It can't keep up with the modern cars.

I'd go again in a heartbeat!! I learned SOOOOOO much! It's truly amazing what you THINK you know - then they start on you - and you realize you had no clue.... This is the best money anyone in the hobby can spend. Forget more go fast parts until you've done one of their driving schools... it's truly an OMG experience. So much fun and you learn so much at the same time.

I stayed at that 'casino' thing right there - Wild Horses or something like that. It's real close - cause when you're old like me - I was whooped at the end of the day. And DO NOT MISS a chance to do the SHIFTER CART CLASS... That is a whole 'nother kick!

Charley, your gonna have to switch the steering wheel with one that has the flat spot on the bottom, and get the seat just a tad bit closer. The seat might be to tall for him also, his legs might dangle.

"Optima Ulitmate STREET CAR Invitational".

Happily, this Mustang is as far from a street car as one could get.... no interior - no headlights - it drives like a truck until you get to about 50 MPH... runs 110 gas only.... no wipers - plexiglass windshield and rear window... no windows or guts in the doors... :willy:  :woot: :woot: It's just the way I like it!

Oh yeah buddy!

Here's a second post of a shortened video with A LOT better line, and speeds... from the second day. I'm running Yellow group (Novice) and the first two laps are warm up.... Figure 2:30ish per lap so faster laps (2:15's Charley said) start at 5 minutes into this video if you want to just forward to that point. GPS data is missing from this video because of posting it to YouTube instead of the Contour website... I have yet to figure out how to shorten (edit) the video before posting to the Contour site so chose the YouTube format because this video had 15 minutes of sitting in the staging lane!). Final laps showed top speeds of 112 to as high as 117 going into turns 1 and 14.

CHARLEY -- Note the corrected moniker!

Greg, that Bondurant school paid off eh? Not too shabby out there... great improvement. Musta felt great!

I've done two schools -- Bondurant -- and Spring Mountain Motorsports (Pahrump).... Bondurant teaches you far far more.... they get my 100% vote.
Spring Mountain is more track time - but less "learning". Also less $$ but you get what you pay for.

IMHO -- ANYONE wanting to drive this stuff -- should spend less on parts and more on lessons.... THEN buy parts...

I SUCK.... but I can and will get better. That is the fun of it.

RE: Improvement

#1 had to learn Jerico tranny

#2 had to remember to breathe

#3 had to remember to think

#4 had to remember to LOOK AHEAD

#5 had to SLOW DOWN to drive faster

#6 remember to bring extra shorts

#7 remember to not let Charley see you screw up....

Congrats on your purchase.

Just got home at 6 tonight - had a stop over in Portland -- and had TWO blow outs on the trailer.... only had one spare -- changed the spare on first blow out -- 40 miles later = Kabloooie! Another blow out! Now I have to drop the trailer on the freeway -- and take the two blowouts and get two new tires. Lucky for me - I was just shy of exit #60 and the tire shop was just behind me at exit #57. And the guy just happened to have ONLY TWO my size. My favorite saying "better lucky than smart" -- once again worked for me!

Sorry I couldn't work out having dinner with you and Laura... the timing just didn't fit this time. The '32 is at Brizios -- so unless I talk Charley into fetching it for me --- I'll have to come back down "shortly".

trailer tires seem to do that to you when you least expect it....oh and remember when charley tells you to "go out and hit the pace car" shake your head and just ignore him. LOL

Vince --- The tires on the trailer have lots and lots of tread (and were made in '08 so they're not old).... but on both tires the entire tread came off like they were retreads (they're not!). I check the pressure before every haul and usually during a haul... they had 80 #'s which is the max rating for the tire. The remaining tires - including the spare - will be replaced this week with Goodyears to match the two I bought. Funny - the Goodyears max is 65 #'s...

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I got in trouble with the race steward a couple of time during the weekend... and Charley warned me that I would! They had to remind me - nicely - that I was in YELLOW PANTS GROUP.... in one session I was "making people nervous".... Okay -- I get that.... some of these guys/gals were on track doing about 40 in the straights... Here I come around the corner and its "punch it! I know the road"! (LOL).... and I go flying by them WOT.... I needed to "tip toe" around them... My bad! I forgot I was on a track... you know - for race cars.... BUT they were RIGHT..... I was still in the YELLOW PANTS and GREEN HARNESS group...

^^^^^^ Not sure how I'd move up to Red group.... unless I could show that I can drive accordingly... and the Red group ain't doing 40 in the straights... And the steward did ask me to move up if I wanted to -- I just was having too much fun in Yellow because I had the track to myself a lot of the time... and could spend more time on the line - and braking - and shifting etc without "traffic".

My final session I did an off road at Stielow corner... all four in the dirt... Turn 5 sweeping right and is the down hill side of 5A which is an uphill hard left with a downhill blind right... After a dicing drive with an instructor in his late model Mustang... he came over to me at the beginning of this session and gave me some pointers about where I should place my tires on a couple of the turns to gain time... He wanted me to be more to the right side of the track on 5 after clipping 5A... (I was taking it more to the middle).... So I tried to come off 5A "straighter" to clip the curb on 5... EXCEPT I put the right front in the dirt.... which grabbed and brought the ass around and rather than spin - I straightened her up and just cut the corner rather than try to gather it up. They had actually talked about that in the driver meeting -- to not try to do any "heroics" once you're in the dirt.... and I remembered that -- and it worked... The dirt is very soft -- and once I felt the ass get loose - I just straightened it out and cut the corner - got back on track - slowed down - cleaned the tires around the next couple turns.... THEN I got black flagged (again)... and had to come in and explain myself and rightly so.

Keep in mind that the trailor tires will get hot during transit so they probably exceeded the 80 lbs if you put 80 lbs into them to start with.

Great job on the track btw!!

Just for clarity of the situation --- those tires have MANY MANY long distance trips -- as in Scottsdale and back to Seattle several times -- LA and back several times - So it isn't the air pressure that "suddenly" blew the tread off TWO tires on the same trip.... my guess it DELAMINATING.... since both tires suffered the exact "tread loss"....Neither tire blew out the sidewall....

Just FYI -- Load range "E" tires are 80# cold max pressure --- you can have the same size tire with a lower load range rating and it will have a lower max pressure.

Engine builder says 50 #'s is all we need -- and that with a roller cam and RedLine synthetic oil (straight 40wt) she's good to go....

I told him "my rule" which I learned along time ago re: 10#'s per 1000 rpms -- and he just laughed and said "yeah - but that's at what bearing clearances and blah blah blah...."

I'll take his word for it.

I was just looking for a rise out of you and everybody else.:D My engine builder would agree. The whole 10lbs per thousand rpm is old news. That all started with Smokey Yunick way back when. I will say that your oil temp was only 205 and racing temps may net you less. I just switched to Red Line so I'm not sure how it's viscosity drops off from 205 to say 230-250 in oil temp. I know my Brad Penn partial synthetic dropped 10 psi from 210 oil temp to 230-250. I'm changing my oil cooler and oil for a reason. I'd take a look next time out to see if you should change to a 50 weight. I 'm running 15w-50. These race engine builder like to build them loose to cool the bearings. That baby is a high winding haas.

clill
10-25-2011, 10:29 PM
The engine builder actually helped Redline in the development of the 40wt oil. Tony Oddo is considered about as good as it gets out here in the West. They build everything from spec Winston west engines to most good long lasting vintage race engines. I would not change to 50wt.

Vegas69
10-25-2011, 10:36 PM
It depends on oil temperature. Tony is happy with 50 but is he happy with 43 when it's 90 degrees out and oil temps rise? My point, monitor your SPECIFIC application and call your engine builder. They want to hear from you and THEY make the call. To many guys just wing it and it costs them. I know Weld has more money than Donald Trump but playing ring around the rosey with engines isn't my idea of a spring picnic.

GregWeld
10-25-2011, 11:51 PM
I called the engine builder TWICE today ---- he probably has blocked my number now....

He told me to just run straight 40wt RedLine.... and that IF I was going to wing the motor to 7500 all the time that it should be looked at after 40 hours of engine time. I told him I was holding it to 6000 on the straight and he said - oh h*** you won't need to look at it for a long time then.

Charley made all the right choices when this was built - it's got Titanium valves, locks, and retainers... solid roller cam (.650 lift - 258*@.050 intake and 263*@.050 ext - 108 LSA)... it revs so quickly that you have to be a little careful on the gas pedal! I've had a few motors -- and this is my favorite. It's a rowdy little guy... and I love it.

Glad to hear you're motor is still going strong. I know that the old rule of thumb is/was just that... because it's one of those things that just all "depends". Clearances - temps - oil weight etc. As long as the builder is fine with that pressure I can sleep with it.

As Charley pointed out to me several times during the weekend -- "if you want them to last a little while.... you can't run 'em like a race car" or some such sage words of advice.

These are just "track days" -- and you really have to get your head into that versus "all out race I want to win at any cost"....

Basics that I know about...

Ford 302R block (racing block)
Eagle forged crank
J&E 12.5:1 forged pistons
Oliver rods
Edelbrock Victor/Mark Chapman heads
Titanium valves - locks - retainers
Solid roller cam - .650 lift... 258/[email protected] - 108 LSA
Victor intake/holley carb
Bored and Stroked to 355"

My SBC 408 - has a very light rotating assembly (Honda rod journal size - Gun Drilled Crank) and rev's smoking fast.... but this little SBF rev's faster than anything I've ever owned.

I just wanted to have a spare set of wheels with tires mounted and ready to go... and the ones Charley sold me (on the car) were used up during the weekend at Thunderhill... so needed to replace the ones on the car.

All R6's -- this car will NEVER see an auto x course.... Road courses only. Auto X holds absolutely ZERO interest for me. Nothing wrong with those guys that like it - but I'm not interested in 30 seconds of seat time.

Going to the RTT"X" events is just a "trip" for me.... I'll work the events should they need/want me to - and hopefully get a couple laps around the big track for my efforts.

Flat screen is upstairs -- can't have that kind of crap down on the working floor! That "thing" you're looking at is an aluminum radiator "on end" that is a leaker... ( I don't do business with BeCool after the third times a charm routine). The boat anchor is outside the shop (for real)... I figured I might need a big heavy chunk of galvanized steel for something one day. Anything that doesn't rust - is outside "da shed".

Why would he run A6's on a road course?

The faster Time Trial guys run A6'6 because they heat up faster and dont need to run the whole session to achieve the fastest lap times. They say A6's could be up tp 2 seconds faster than R6's due to the softer compound but they wont last the whole 20 minute session.

At Bondurant -- they told us that all the weaving back and forth was just a big waste of time... and that just rolling into the corners and the on and off the gas would heat the tires faster. I don't know if they just made that up or not - but they're all race car guys.

Track Junky
04-18-2012, 08:33 PM
Not sure I agree with that. Cold tires roll over when your weaving and you heat the outside edges quicker. I dont weave to heat tires very often if at all just thought I'd comment.

So both you and your wife are going to drive your car at T-Hill?

From a motorcyclist's track day experience most organizers strongly restrict weaving. More crashes than heat gain is one and probably the primary reason. They say acceleration and braking will gain more heat than weaving.

BUT........we see most the big boys on TV weaving, especially F1. IMO - Any time you can create friction and carcass flex you're building heat. The key is doing safely.

At track days on the bikes I take it easy the first half lap and gradually ramp up the pace the next 1.5 laps, then it's as hard as I feel capable of pushing that session or day given the ambient and track temps. I run sticky DOT's and don't use warmers.

I can't remember the race but there was an F1 celebrity that lost it in the warm-up lap building heat in the tyres and took himself out of the race not too many years ago. :D

THAT is exactly why they told us not to weave! They said they have more wrecks from that than anything.... And that - as you stated - just accelerate and brake and the heat will come quickly.

ask him about Jeff Eischen. They worked together back in Bruce's racing days. Jeff isn't really a car builder per say. He was a partner in an Indy car team back in the day and an incredible fabricator. His attention to detail is insane. He builds one car a year and they have all been for himself except this one for Bruce.

Here is a link to a couple of cars he built out of his shop..

I found other posts with that car / racing team -- with them running turn 5....

I can tell you right now -- that Charley and his buddies that are very familiar with this track - are running good cars - and making 2:11's or so.... He timed me on one or two laps and got 2:15 and I know I was doing way better than that on Sunday afternoon... but when I see this guy ripping off 1:54's --- it's like OMG -- no way I'm to going to be running like that!

I was hoping to get into 2:08's or better.... and have my GTechPro Fanatic RR all set and ready to go to clock my times. I'm mostly going to set it up to record the splits so I can break down the track and try to improve in one or two spots per session... then finally put 'em all together and see what happens.

I always refer to our beloved Mary P.... she goes out and lays it down REGARDLESS of what the car handles like.. she just adjusts and get's 'er done.

It always brings fond former memories of when I used to drag race - and you'd go out and kill some guy with far better equipment... but you'd do it with tire pressure - and timing - and the right A/F ratio at WOT.... just simple stuff that all the equipment in the world doesn't teach you.

thats what makes auto x fun, you don't usually get enough runs to memorize the layout. It mostly comes to driver instinct and setting up the car right. You can only get so much walking a course...unless your a Pozzi.

I had the privilege of meeting Gwen and Greg and getting a quick personal trailer tour of Old Yeller today! The car is exceptional in person, what a track weapon! Great job on the build Charlie.

Greg - It was a real pleasure to finally meet you and your lovely wife all though way too brief of a meeting.

Hope the forecast holds as it looks to be awfully good. Will Gwen get some instruction/site laps to learn the reference points?

Have a great time at T-Hill!

Thanks buddy! Was good to shake hands with you too!

We settled into Redding for the night -- it was a dilly dally kind of day.... no big rush to get down here... Got all day tomorrow to goof off now.

Hope those heads work out for you!

How was lunch? Katie buy? :D We meet at the Blvd Grille in the summer since the owner is a car guy and blocks a section of the front lot for us.

If they don't work out they'll be the coolest bookends I've ever owned. :D
Taking them to the builder today for a strategic planning session. :unibrow:

Thanks again, enjoy D-D'ing today. Track walk after dinner tonight?

Lunch was fine - can't hurt a Cob salad much... I didn't know Geoff was a car guy... He's Katies boss where he is partner in a pizza joint... so he bought us dessert. Katie ate it.

Those heads will be killer - especially if you go stroker 383... Amazing how much more torque you can get out of 33 more cubic inches. Just keep the rod short.

GM was selling a 383 short block - don't know if they still do - but IIRC it was a bargain.
