Nice Greg that's a neat little back up,car! So what's with the Nomad title, did you sell it or trade it in? I knew I should have bought that car when you offered it to me :headspin:

Well -- I've had the car since 1998 --- done two chassis -- and 5 motors - and a couple different trannys in the car.... I've done just about everything a guy could do in and with it.... and I haven't driven it except to get gas - for like 2 years.... Sail it or Sell it.
When I "accidentally" bought the Lotus - I called my buddy of some 25 years that's a car dealer here in Portland and told him to come get his new Nomad. He did. I left plenty of meat on the bone for him.

By the way -- when I left PIR this morning -- I had to wait for them to unlock the gates to go out -- lined up coming in is a big azz race rig -- and a guy standing in the street BS'n with another car.... The silhouette looks familiar so I get out and walk to them. It's my buddy that owns the dyno.... and they're bringing TWO WOLF cars --- a Honda V-Tec car and the FIRST IN THE USA fresh from Italy - a totally carbon fiber V8 version! I, of course, turned my rig around and went straight to the pits. Apparently today is a test and tune day for a SCCA race this weekend.
I drove home -- got the title to the Nomad - some spares - a can of paint with the code - took a shower.... bought more coffee grounds from Starbucks -- and I'm back at PIR as I type this.
Picking up the MEATBALL RACING 2/11 at 10 AM.... I just couldn't let it sit at the dealer while I was in SV! So here I am!
LOL -- I'm such a putz!
Time to update the signature!... hope to see the new Lotus 2-Eleven and the Mustang back here at PIR in September. It was nice to meet you yesterday.
Hopefully you won't be seeing anymore meatball flags for a while... at least you have a back up car now

Was great to meet you too Dale! Can't believe you drove in from your vacation on the coast! But glad you did!
I've said it fifty or maybe 60 gazillion times -- best part of cars is the people you get to meet!

Out with the old and in with the new.
Look at Greggers selling the touring cars and buying race cars.
Sounds like "pro touring" to me! :D

You and Charley just like it because it has yellow on it!!! HAHAHAHAHAHA
To be quite honest.... When the guy told me "I won't be passing anyone on the straights" --- I took his word for it. So I WAS thinking this would be a killer little back up car AND a car my son Alex could come out and learn to drive in.... AFTER he takes more pro driving schools (arranging those now!)... and now I think he might be better off in the Mustang!!!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA Oh my!

New cars just aren't fun... they do everything well and are too easy to drive. They've got huge brakes -- they have ABS -- they have - dare I say it - no soul.
:action-smiley-027:
Center steering, no windshield, monkey bars, sure looks like a lot of fun! I'm guessing its not street legal, mainly because I haven't seen any in the Microsoft parking lot.
p.s. My names Dan not Alex, sheesh Greg err dad.

It's not new -- technically it's a USED race car.....
I know... I know.... but the deal was too good to pass up --- the colors are right -- I was there.... it was there.... and anyway -- it's a good back up car because the salesman told me they never break.... But then again -- he's the same guy that told me they won't pass anything on the straights... hmmmmmmmm.
You'd likely not see them in the MSFT parking lot -- they're not street legal and I had to sign all manor of shiiiiiiz that Lotus makes you sign that it doesn't have a title - isn't street legal and blah blah blah....

First thoughts are -- I'd do NOTHING to it... except make the fire system better... Get myself a Hans device... along with a carbon fiber helmet... and some skills.

1477 pounds!
The body weighs in at 88 pounds!
Not much in the HP and TQ numbers like we're used to around here --- but it's good enough to make this lightweight scoot 0-60 in 3.8 seconds and 0-100 in 9.1..... Not bad for 109 cubic inches! LOL

1477lbs vs 2000 lbs. thats huge. I just LOL when I know you just impulse bought that. You had no idea what it was or is. When I saw the youtube videos posted in this thread. I was thinking to myself "damn that's a track car, and why are they passing people on the straights? Greg said it was underpowered in the straights".
Oh, 1477lbs thats probably with 2 seats, you have a one seater, probably 1450 lbs now.

Those Lotus track cars are amazing! Would love to drive one someday.
My rx7 has a similar p/w ratio :)
That black car coming off the transporter was a Norma right?
My buddy Brandon Kraus from Roger Kraus racing is one of the co-drivers.
It will be at the 25hrs of Thunderhill this year. I thought it was a French car?

Well --- I was able to pick up the Mustang after dropping off Mayhem at Charley's. This time around I "only" had a Jessel shaft style rocker arm broken -- which bent a valve ($131 for ONE titanium exhaust valve)… it only kissed the piston -- and everything else was fine. Replaced the retainer and spring - head gasket etc and all is wonderful with the world now.
Considering the motor had to be pulled -- taken to the builder (T.O.E. Performance) and broken down - fixed - and re-installed… the $3200 bill seems very fair. That includes 10 hours of engine builder time to make sure all was fine with the motor other than the busted rocker arm.
So Laguna Seca here I come!! We'll see if I can get one whole weekend of track time out of her!!

I would imagine that the track will be cold this time of year. I can deal with that. It's Alex that I'm worried about. The lotus is way more powerful than you would imagine and he'll think he's parnelli jones... We'll have to have a good father son discussion about expectations... Which he will forget all about while still in first gear.

I've been jonesing to get out so bad I've been watching recordings of the last two Continental and Rolex series races from the last season over and over again.
The last two races were at Lime Rock and Laguna. They brought up the fact that Laguna was very slick more than a few times. Make sure that gets embedded into Alexi's head. Some times a wack to the back of the head helps  Looking forward to hearing about it

Thank goodness they let me park the POS at the track when I arrived Wednesday so we could come into Carmel (where we have a hotel and Turkey dinner plans) and enjoy ourselves a bit.

You two are peas in a pod! That was about the second thing out of his mouth!
A coupe of valuable lessons came from this... He had been trying it get me to let him make CF parts for it... But he finally acknowledged it was light enough already.... And I had warned him repeatedly that the car was FAR faster than it looks... Again he acknowleded that it would pass almost anything in the straights. He finally quit with the "WE should modify this and WE should get a bigger blower....."

It's not that bad but I'd think I'd like to paint it the opposite colors of the mustang. Body in titanium with yellow stripes. And that would be a good excuse. Hahahahahahaha

Greg,
That's great to hear Alex is ok.
Speaking of carbon fibre body parts, it'll be interesting IMO to see if some company does a deal with James Shipka to sell copies of the '67 OLC front end in CF.
I think it's awesome that Greg and Alex are able to enjoy days like this together - hopefully one day my daughter and I will be able to do the same. Shame that it ended the way it did but I know from experience that Brian will take good care of the car. And as you said Greg... It's a good excuse (not that you needed one).
Skip - I spoke to some folks at SEMA about doing it, I'm just not sure I'm prepared to take the risk. Rather than mess up Greg's thread we can discuss in the OLC reinventing thread.
Put Alex to work :D

Bob --- Yeah --- it would have been fun to have had you join us! It was a NorCal Shelby Club event. They've not only told us no "club" 105db days -- that clubs will be 90dbs!!! A stock Corvette can't make 90 !!
We had a good time --- but there was a lot of delays because there were LOTS -- as in OMG LOTS -- of off track excursions…. and a major track oiling… and it was an easy track to run out of talent real fast.
Charley brought out Mayhem and he only got two sessions in and both were more like half sessions… There was just too much carnage.
It's going to be fun to see what happens during the ARCS event -- because my guess is there's way too much horsepower and way too little talent… and I'm betting there's some pretty banged up stuff at the end of the day. I hope not -- but if this event was any indication -- OH MY.

Well Brian has the rear off the Lotus --- and there's less damage than I had imagined…..
Ordered a header and new exhaust system for it… and trying to find the 5 element carbon fiber rear diffuser here in the US…
Then Terry McCarthy emailed me (his son is the, now 15 year old, that I let drive the Lotus and they're going to buy one and race it for this upcoming season)…. and we started chatting about Laguna Seca --- his exact comment --- "Laguna eats more cars than all the other tracks in California combined".
Good luck with that for the PT cars on street tires and big hp… and little seat time for many drivers…. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Dale -- I rarely take any video… and didn't this time either.
The Mustang ran great and drove great! I did one session with too low tire pressure… not sure what I did -- but man was it wiggly down the straight into turn 1 and 2…
Next session I got the pressures right ---and Mary and David told me to hit the "Z" in Mazda on the bridge and then brake after the crest… That worked out GREAT!!
There was quite a bit of traffic and way too many off tracks and delays - especially for a one day event -- but I may never drive there again - so all is good!

I hear ya Chad…. ME? And ego?? HA!!!
Not one that will fit in any oversized room that is…
On track days --- I think Charley told me early on…. "visor down - race on!"
So true!!
This is the first track day --- other than when I was following little Tommy around --- where I felt I was finally driving within my skill level. My problem usually comes when I'm on the track with nobody in front of me --- then it's harder to judge your speed and I tend to hammer it too hard. This time when nobody was around -- I actually slowed down and took my time to find the right lines rather than trying to "catch up" to someone way ahead. It was MUCH MORE relaxing --- and my guess is -- my times weren't far off of the hammer down times because I probably carried more speed overall. The "smooth/slow is fast" comes into play -- a lot less jamming the brakes and furious saves -- and a lot more just smooth turn ins and less wheel input.
I even said to Charley at Laguna -- "I think I'm finally learning".
Hey! Better late than never!!

During my very first PDX at Heartland Park Topeka in my Monte, during my second session I had a pretty good instructor who once he figured out I wasn't going to kill him, really started helping me find my way around the track the fast way. There was a local Corvette group out there with us and they were driving us crazy...super slow in the corners then drag racing us down every straight instead of pointing us by.
At one point I finally got past the last one for a while and took off down the back straight... They had the chicane setup that day and as we started to get close to it, the instructor said... "Don't forget to drive here..." I nodded my head and he said "It happens"...
I went in a little bit hot but just had to lift a bit, not loosing the car or anything...but I've never forgot him saying that and every time I've got out in front since, not following (chasing) anyone, his voice comes back to me. "Don't forget to drive here"
Sorry about the damage Greg but glad nobody got hurt.

Yes -- the last thing you want to see is your kid or family getting hurt (let alone ANYONE else) when you're supposed to be out having fun. He was sore - but fine. The seat is good -- he was wearing my new carbon fiber helmet so had less head weight.. and was well strapped in.

I gave him the advice that Sieg gave me to tell him --- Just fold "it" in half….
I think he started out that way -- and the yellow group I put him in was pretty jammed up - but as the day went on - the group thinned out -- and I think the first time he had some room to run --- it ended up this way. Trust me when I repeat -- this little car is very quick… it's very deceiving because it's so small…
but with a 63% rear weight bias… that can stack up against a guy real quickly.

Greg,
What kind of motor is in the lotus? Something with a roots blower?
Lotus uses TOYOTA motors ---- this one is a 2ZZ-GE 1.8 liter motor with a supercharger. It is rated at 252 hp.
It was used - without the supercharger in Corolla T Sport - and Celica GT-S and even the Pontiac Vibe…
When you add the supercharger -- it turns into a nice little motor that revs to the moon. It is completely stock motor - stock valve train etc… and is rev limited to 8500 rpms. The variable cam timing doesn't kick in until 6200 rpms and there's a HUGE difference in available power if you keep the rpms up.
Check out the cam when it goes from just cruising around to "race on" mode -- hahahahaha

Duration Valve lift Duration Valve lift
Low Cam 228° 7.6mm (.299) 228° 7.6mm (.299)

I had a very similar experience playing with some little Formula Ford cars down at the Indee Motorsports Park down in BFE AZ. I finally got a little open space after being held up by slow traffic all day, missed my line and overcooked the exit of turn 2 only to find myself looping a 180. Had to get hard on the brakes to not back into the tire-barrier. The instructor pulls up in the truck and says "what happened?", I raised my visor and said "just ran out of talent, that's all".

Yeah --- I've run Indee --- and your BFE (Wilcox is the actual address - a friend owns the track!) description is spot on! OMG you're out in the pucker weeds!
One of the things I've been trying to do -- is to run a bit off line once in awhile just to experiment a little --- since, in traffic - that (being off line) happens all the time. You get a point by -- you mash it -- and that corner is coming up quick and you're off line and completely on the wrong side of the track… Now you're all in -- and driving your ass off! Or when you are hauling azz and all of a sudden the guy in front of you is all over the brakes way earlier than you would be --- and it's whoa! baby….
It's one thing to run these RTTC type events -- were it's a single car on the track -- it's quite another when you have traffic!
PT cars have huge by wide tires -- street tires yes -- but good quality street tires -- and they have huge brakes…. Charley and I are running 245's…. he's still running drum rears --- and I have disc all around but they're tiny little two piston fronts and single rears…. You really notice the braking "deficiencies" of these cars -- even compared to my newer big brake street cars!

Brian received the header and "de-cat" pipe for the Lotus today… it's ceramic coated… the muffler I ordered is shipped and is done in Stainless Steel.
He's got the list all figured out for all the other parts needed…. and he'll order those up and get 'em all painted and stickered up. I just wanted to save him the hassle of trying to find "non-factory" parts… such as this exhaust and the 5 element carbon fiber diffuser panel I ordered from Sector 111.
All in all --- this little "wad" will be around 20 grand to fix. The exhaust is expensive (because - it's not a small block chevy!)… the carbon fiber diffuser isn't free either…. and by the time he orders the other stuff he needs and paints it and labor to disassemble and re-assemble… yeah… Merry Xmas to Alex.

I think I did pretty good talking a Chevy guy into buying a Ford. Then he needed a better trailer setup. Before that I talked him into having Brizio build his pickup. Before that I talked him into a 32 Ford 3 window. For the time being Chet is in the lead for money I have made him spend but when Greg gets his garage done that has to be big enough to hold the Renegade setup I got him going on then Greg will be in the lead.:G-Dub:
And who said helping others spend their money isn't a sporting event.

That's what keeps the sport unattainable as far as track days are concerned… the costs are just prohibitive for many folks. But I see guys out at the track events that you know are struggling to be there - but they have the desire… and while they may not have the fancy paint job or trailer - some of 'em are hard to pass! I give kudos to those folks. They're out doing what they love.

Greg,
I hear you on the costs for many.. back when we were kids
we could get an old car and still get many parts from the Junkyard
Most of those cars are gone from any junkyard or picked over
With todays electronics and sensors.. it could cost $500-$700 for
a sensor just to keep the damn thing running
Kids have it tougher getting into Hot Rodding at todays prices

Oh hell yeah --- I've seen some of the best hauler/conversions… and if I had the time right now I think I'd be planning a project - but the next two years are tied up with building the new house here in Sun Valley - which means we are splitting our time between the old home and here… so between trying to keep the two track cars going - and that - I just don't want to start anything. That's also why the '33 is being built at Brizio's. If I started it right now - I'd be 65 by the time it was back on the ground. UGH!

Going there tomorrow to brand the new calves

He never has been a mechanic and figured out since I am

I've gotten better at driving the Mustang... and frankly a couple changes in alignment really made a big improvement.
The Lotus --- that was a greasy POS... I was not able to get any laps in at Laguna because I was letting my son drive it... so I have no idea if it was improved or not. I'm hoping that Brian will take it to the track and give me some feedback once he has it all back together.

Only two cars have over 240 whp?
Well actually with more digging around -- I haven't been able to find any OFFICIAL track times for SMMP... You'd think that would be easy info to find out. This came up in a search - and it's a website where you post your own times - so it's really only that those particular guys found the site and posted to it. But those times - from what I can find - are very very fast.
I would think the Radical SR8's could wipe up on the little Lotus - and both Andy Kern and Jack Fried (as you know) have them. So I would think if they could run better in the Radicals - they'd have posted that up?
I would have thought the 8 cylinder Radical's would have been quicker too. They certainly look like the real deal. The RX8's are in the 1500 lb. category with 400+ hp.

a sudden I see this yellow flash in my mirror and then gone
I look to the outside of the corner and in the marbles and the
guy was passing me and gone.... it took a few times out
to figure that what is flashing in my mirror does not effect
me because by the time I figured it out he has passed me

That's some serious Lateral G's... <get it? Pun intended>

I would think the Radical SR8's could wipe up on the little Lotus
And it would. It is very hard to compare times between cars/tracks/drivers and come out with meaningful numbers, but one source I did find is from Top Gears test track times:
Radical SR3 1:19.1
Lotus Elise 1:28.2
A 211 would be considerably faster than a Elise, but it is essentially comparing a race car with something derived from a street car.
I love that you have the 211, and look forward to some comparisons between it and the Mustang. I bet in the long run, the Lotus will be faster and CHEAPER to run than the Mustang.

Oh gawd Brian --- you know her --- she'll bring PINK!! LOL
You two need to come up with dates and a plan to have both of you drive the snot out of that little POS and see what it needs --- different tire compounds? Tire pressures?? More wing? Or maybe me just getting more skill..... I haven't wrecked it yet - but it was sure tail happy when I drove it.
Greg - You haven't driven it yet with the Hoosiers yet right?
GregWeld

Greg - You haven't driven it yet with the Hoosiers yet right?
Right! I haven't driven it at all since I made MANY changes to the car. Different alignment specs (race specs) - Tires - Bushings - Motor mounts - wing attitude...
I'm thinking that the R6 compound for this light of a car is wrong... and that I should be trying the A6 compound -- and the Yokohama A005 in their SOFT compound. I have three sets of wheels for this car --- so plan to run all three sets of tires to find the right ones.
R6 is harder of the two? Could they work for real hot afternoon track temp days where the softer A6 could get greasy?
GregWeld
01-20-2014, 10:10 PM
R6 is harder of the two? Could they work for real hot afternoon track temp days where the softer A6 could get greasy?
Well -- that's the question. I'm new to all of this -- I don't have a years long background with this stuff like I do say - welding... or bending tubes. So I'm reading - talking - emailing - gathering opinions... Your point is a great one... one day and one temp with one set of tires could be completely different on another day... different track etc. I think maybe this is why real race teams have a cadre of people sorting all that stuff out. I don't know .00000000001% about any of it.
My thinking is to have Ron Sutton come for a weekend track session or more... and get me started about how to think - what to think about - how to start to get a data base etc. For instance -- Thunderhill is a high speed track -- Laguna is a more technical track as is Sonoma... so maybe the R6's would build heat at Thunderhill but maybe take too long to build heat at Sonoma... These are things I'm not familiar with.
I know about investing - someone else knows about racing.... I need Racing 102. I need to be taught some very very basic info so that I might be able to make half a decent choice of tire - pressures - etc. Since we're not racing - there's no money involved - no trophies to polish.... I just want to have a car handle "better" which makes it more fun to drive... I'm not looking to shave 2 seconds off my track time.
I know when a car handles like poo --- how to correct it is what I don't know.

It's at my place in Bellevue -- I'm at my place in Sun Valley - so I can't go look even. And I really have no idea what's what with it... I just change the oil after each motor blows up -- the suspension is fine -- so other than nut and bolting it - I don't look. It's just "stuff".

Gotcha. Maybe it'd be easier if I went over and poked around a lil, the hide-a-key still under the fake rock?
I'll keep looking, if it comes up in conversation with Jack or Charlie I'd be interested to know what works.
Thanks

Jack just replied that he used TCP - Total Control Products - which is the race division of Chris Alston.... But I know for a fact that there is Maier Racing stuff on there as well because his name is the first thing you see when poking your head under the car...
Vari Shocks is what I remember seeing and someone else commenting on...
And the front engine - shock tower bracing looks like what is shown on the TCP website... but I also know it has tubular A arms.... and bump steer adjusters
I combed my photos thinking that I might have a couple of pics of the suspension but I don't...

I appreciate the information, can't really go wrong with either of those names.
I did see a few under car photos in the thread, just the rear though. I'll keep digging.
Thanks again

The front is TCP and the rear was redone by Maeco Motorsports who may have used Maier stuff. If I was going to build another Mustang, I would use all the parts provided by Cortex Racing; second choice, if the car was also going to be for street, I would go with all DSE.

Thank you both.
I remember the Cortex Mustang, he was running Optima the same year as us. Something about no windows and snow on the drive from LasVegas! Street car, oh sure.
I'll look into D$E, quality stuff for sure.

If you've ever watched their little red Mustang rip the track -- I agree! I'd also be using an LS motor... I'd just buy an LS3 525hp and I'd leave it bone stock and just run it til it quit. More than enough power for what we're doing. And cheap relative to running all this custom built stuff.

Here Dan --- Cortex "Execution" Mustang at Sonoma....
A "PS" here... I rode with my buddy Chet... in his Mustang... can't really tell you how his car is set up - but let's just say it's set up "well" for what it is - but I don't think it's got too much special going on. He's fast and I've yet to see him spin or do anything weird at the track and we've done a few together now... and HE could not keep up with a GT3 car despite many laps behind it... each lap it got further and further away. I was blown away by how well he did keep up though.
Then you watch how easy this was and it's an OMG....

525 hp stock LS3 ?
Straight from GM... With a carb. Cheap power - plenty of torque... lightweight.
http://www.chevrolet.com/performance/crate-engines/circle-track-ct-525-525.html
I should say 'carbureted' -- not "With a carb" - as that made it sound like it comes with a carb... I just meant it's not EFI.

Great video, hookin and bookin!
I need to focus on the K.I.S.S. approach. Lots of fancy pants high end parts available for these but I would think that a lot of the track cars are running basic proven equipment.
Maier is looking like the way to go for me, plus he's got cool stickers.
The LS doesn't sound like a bad idea, I hear they're putting them in show cars now!

Dan -- I think if you took a ride with Charley - or me - or Chet - or Pete.... you'd be pretty shocked at how well simple stuff on skinny race tires can "hook and book". Build these for the street - with fatter tires (although 200 TW etc) and they'd be similar I think for handling. We're only using 245 X 15 tires -- and the street guys are running 335's. So we're running a tread width of 9.6" vs a 335 X 30 X 18... or 12.7"

Chet's car originally had global west parts in front
with their shocks Lincoln brakes out front and sat real high
I had custom alignment strip everything off changed springs, shocks
put the overrides on it and had them set it as low as they could
Also put the baier brakes out front
I missed the first track event because I was sick so I auto crossed the next week
I remember Mike Maier looking under it while I was working the course
Not much of an auto cross car but on the track it was so easy to drive
It was so low it would scrape the headers on the rumble strips at the start of thunderhill's front straight. I finally put a set of shorties on it
At 2810lbs it would go almost anywhere on the track
When I got better running it I could hear the shock towers creaking
Welded them later:).
I only had 455 hp and could run in the top of the Shelby blue group with no problems. I finally scattered the motor and then had the 530hp 331 built
I never did track it before I sold it to Chet. It was a great car to run but
not like my Pantera and my Firebird felt neglected
Glad to see it is being used like it should be
I really had fun and learned how to track in that car
but I really am not a mustang guy

Not sure of why you'd ask.... as in -- because of the exhaust being near something? Or because of noise?
With a helmet on in a car with no windows -- no -- the sound doesn't bother me at all - in fact I love it.
There is no exhaust or anything like that on any parts of the car AFT of the dumps... But this car runs 110 octane Race Gas... and burns really clean

I asked because of the heat next to the rear end. While racing, I assume, the exhaust would get very hot and having an additional heat source next to the rear...

When racing -- the car is mostly always in motion - so there's lots of airflow under the car.

So let's just say, for example, a guy was trying to do something nice for someone and order a helmet and steering wheel hook. They only come in 1 1/2" or 1 3/4", what do you do? The 1 1/2" will fit but the bracket will have a gap...the 1 3/4" will be loose unless the bar is wrapped. I don't have the means to open up the 1 1/2" to fit snug, besides that I don't want to put that much effort into it!

Well you do have a pretty big garage with some cool tools in it so I figured you actually worked on your cars.

Seems lately that I only work on "others" cars Marty.
Did a quickie fuel tank extension project for my brother in laws Camaro last weekend -- and made him a different fuel line...
I didn't have time to build him a whole new tank from scratch -- so he'll just have to wait til the new shed is set up this winter. In the meantime - he can cruise this summer without being so worried about where the next gas station is.
That POR 15 is tough stuff!!!!

Needed to open up the bottom anyway - so cut out the old fuel pick up tubes

Punched it with some new holes....

The tank was so warped there was not a single "square" or flat panel on it.... UGH --- What a lot of work to try to get the new extended area to at least appear to be flat and straight!

STUPID TANK!! Wouldn't stand on it's own..... SO a few clamps and some legs and now I could do a little TIG work.

I had nowhere for my hands to rest --- so had to bend up the torch and weld running the bead towards me.... OH MY -- this is easy for the girls that do welding day in and day out -- but for those of us that weld sporadically -- it's work!

26 sticks of fill later....... Thank god for TIG FINGERS!!! They really do help with the heat!

I have no clue how you can weld an old gas tank. It has always scares the heck out of me. We had a kid at a local repair
shop die last summer when he tried to fix a leaky tank. It exploded and fortunately it killed him immediately and he didn't suffer.
ps I will be bringing my car over soon

He - unfortunately is up for The Darwin Award....
Welding on gas tanks is super easy --- and I don't do ANYTHING that isn't safe!
First you have to wash them real well with a strong mix of some kind of soap and water.... Gas is an OIL based product -- so you can't just rinse with water like some morons try to do.... I use Simple Green -- and it's a strong solution. TWICE.
Then I use the SNIFF TEST.... Still smell gassy? Wash it again!
Then I rinse two or three times - until there's no soapy water....
Then -- Here's the trick! I put DRY ICE in the tank -- as it dissolves -- it turns into an inert gas -- Carbon Dioxide (CO2).... NO OXYGEN - NO IGNITION. It's the FUMES that kill ya! (Gas fumes and air). I displace all the air in the tank with the CO2.
I'd use a back gas of Argon... but that's expensive for a "home guy".... as you'd have to displace the air in a pretty large space. I can do this cheaply ---- AND I CAN SEE IT WORKING --- when I use Dry Ice.

Nice add Greg. I put my helmet on the passenger seat and then my steering wheel on top of my helmet. Gives me that unorganized feeling. I need one of those.

That ain't all you're missing dude.....
They love the Lotus. Just not when you aim the exhaust at the meter. And no the Vette wouldn't make sound.

My two cents, not that anyone asked...
The screwed up thing about Laguna is that while there is a sound limit, you can PAY for a loud day and gain a few more decibels. Apparently the locals care about noise levels, but if you're willing to pay to inconvenience their ears, well that's okay.
All of my experience on track is with bikes, but I have several hundred laps around Laguna on probably a dozen different bikes. The only bike I haven't blown sound on was a KLR650 that I brought for putting around town. The weather plays a big part. I have known people with bone stock 600s to blow the sound meter; it's the airbox noise. But a few times I have gone by on my race bike at full tilt and it wouldn't be a problem.
I'm betting the sound meter is the reason that they set up a slalom section between 5 and 6 for the USCA event. Low RPM is low(er) noise. Kinda ingenious in my opinion.
