You're probably right. Here's a little...

"When the MGM Grand Hotel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MGM_Grand_Hotel) opened in 1975, starring Dean Martin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dean_Martin), the second headline act was Shecky Greene, whose salary at one point climbed to $150,000 a week ($125,000 went to "my bookmaker," Greene cracks).

Greene says that Jay Leno (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jay_Leno) once told him that his all-time favorite joke is one Greene recounted about Frank Sinatra (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Sinatra) saving his life.

Five guys were beating up Greene, and then he heard Sinatra say, "OK. He's had enough."

We'll - Rodger and the boys @ Ironworks finished up what I wanted them to do for me on the car. The ended making new fender mounts, headers, complete exhaust, core support, fender braces, radiator and AC condensor mounts. You can't see them in the pics but I built the main front end supports that mount under the grill support that go down to the frame so most of the front end weight is supported by this. When I asked Rodger to build the core support structure I mentioned I wanted some bars to go down to the frame for further support. We'll Rodger in his infinite wisdom and creativity came up with something better. He didn't like the idea of bars just hanging out there so he came up with the idea of building the top radiator mount, AC Condensor mount and built an enclosure and attached it to the main bars going across then to the frame. It came out slick IMO.

Could be, 1/4" step die and 1/4" bead down the middle and you have to hold your tougue just right. :P

That's a good question? Actually my plan now is to button up the motor compartment 100%. Once that is done we move to the rear of the car. Going to to build a rear diffuser/panel to cover up the mufflers & fuel tank. The fire is burning once again - thanks to Ironworks. Will keep you posted as it unfolds.

BTW - checked your Nova out when I was there over weekend - awesome!

Thanks guys!! Here are a few more pics of the exhaust. Notice nothing hangs below the framerails. You can also see where Rodger extended the inside lower framerail in the rear. I plan on radiusing the lower framerail. You can see where I marked it with a sharpie. Want a smoother looking transition as it rolls forward. Should look better IMO.

Well, here is the yearly update on Nickelback... Been moving at a snails pace - but it is in forward progress. Although some of the pics look similar everything is pretty much final fitted and gapped. Since last update, I installed the hood hinges, overflow bottles, final fit the inner wheel wells, started making the inner wheels that mount within the fender to protect the top side of the fenders. These cars never had them originally but I thought it would be a good addition. I'm going to change out out the overflow caps with Marquez caps. I think they look a little more aggressive and not smooth and "street roddish". Collecting a ton of parts and getting ready to send it down south to Bakersfield so the boys at Ironworks can have their way with it. Plans right now are to have them fab a dash, mount the column, install the new rack & pinion, make some truck coils mounts, make a Big Stuff ECM mount, AC mounts. Getting closer. If all goes well, hopefully be in for paint by the end of the year. I still have to finish up the pass inside wheel well, runs all of the AC lines, make Radiator hoses, brakelines, fuel lines, E-Brake, etc. Until then - here are a few pics

With the hinge openings I wanted to have some bezels made to finish it off nicely. I had Judas from Marquez make these. Came out real nice IMO. I also plan on making some cups that will mount on the backside of the inner fender so you don't get that "hole" affect.

Before

http://i591.photobucket.com/albums/ss355/DuPont55/Motor%20Compartment/IMG_3329-1.jpg

After

http://i591.photobucket.com/albums/ss355/DuPont55/Motor%20Compartment/IMG_3808.jpg

I had plan on doing the same treatment on the hinges DSE did on their 55. I don't like that the hinge mount plates stick above the firewall almost a full inch. I'm going to give these to Judas to modify accordingly. Looks much cleaner IMO!

Thanks Marty!! Question - Did you seal the inner well to the fender at all? I was thinking of using some 1" weatherstrip to seal the gap. Currently there is about a 5/8" gap. Not sure if it is really necessary though. Thoughts?

What guage sheet metal did you use on the inner fenders ?

Liking everything about your '55 - super low stance and the engine compartment is great.

My son had trap shooting in the spring. That took up all the Saturday's for awhile. So see how it's difficult to get garage time sometimes. The kids grow up too fast. Need to do as much with them while you can.

Although moving at a snails pace....I'm still moving forward. Hopefully this thing doesn't rust out before completion!

Here is a shot of the grill support I had to make. I ended making about 1.25" wider than the factory one. Without the factory latch and support in the middle the original one was a little flimsy. This area in the middle is extremely tight now with everything I had to compact in there, not to mention I lost the area for the latch. Probably overkill but I made it out of 16 gauge. It is plenty stout now. Plus about 8" in on each side I ran a bar down to the frame for additional support. With no room for the latch I decided to use hood pins, although I didn't want anything seen outside. You will also notice the 5/8" holes in the support about 4" in on each side. The pins themselves will mount on the hood, go through the support and I will pin them through the grill opening. I'm starting to work on mounting the pins now.

http://i591.photobucket.com/albums/ss355/DuPont55/Motor%20Compartment/03241217_zps7dbb1936.jpg

With the air intake there was no way the factory hood support would work - not to mention they are a little ugly IMO. Fortunately I was also able to use the hood support that EMS makes. It clears the air intake by about 3/8". Got lucky! Very nice piece. I'm suprised it took this long for somebody to step up and make one. For the forward support bars I ended making a bracket for the hood and used tubing with LH & RH rod ends.

I also got the air intake completely mounted. So I was finally able to get everything final gapped. I ended up closing up the ends at the radiator shroud. Looks more finished. I was the I could have ran the gaps tighter around the crossbar but the way you have to manuever to mount - I needed the extra space.

On this front shot you will notice where the factory grill has a missing bar on top where the factory hood latch comes through. The grill I'm using is stainless steel. I plan on having a bar welded in across this area and have it finished so you will never be able to tell it was there.

Hey --- That blue tape.... that stuff is rated for "days" on -- not months.... just saying ---- you might want to try to peel some of it off.... cause it can be a real you know what when it goes south! It's a paper back and doesn't like to come off in strips once its gone bad.

Although still far from from done, it's time for the yearly update. Been plugging away on it just haven't updated anything in quite a while.

Since the last update I have mounted the evaporator, AAW Panel, Big Stuff 3 ECM, seats, gas pedal, brake pedal, steering column and working on E-brake set up now. Using a Control Cables pedal assembly. It is mounted on the far left (normal place) Like most late model cars it is a push on/ push off function. No release handle. Looks slick and OEM style. By the time I was able to get everything packaged under the dash real estate went away real quick. I wanted to mount the coils under the dash as well - but was told to make sure I mounted them as far away from the ECM as possible (thanks Jody). Due to space constraints I was not able to locate a good spot under the dash. So after looking for alternate locations I ended up mounting them outside under the radiator cradle. Everything is only tacked. Once I take it apart the final welding will be all tigged. I will have to make my own spark plug wires and coil harnesses but no big deal. I had to run wires forward anyways for the crank trigger and fans. I will run them down low parallel with the oil pan and drop them in their appropriate locations. Feeling your pain Scott. Spent better part of yesterday at baseball tryouts. One thing I really enjoy though is coaching kids. This will be my 5th year coaching. Started at T-ball with my oldest and working my way up as my kids get older. This year I will be coaching both Farm and AA. Felt good seeing some of these kids I have been involved with for years at this level.

So a little more progress.......

So, as you can see in the picture, the air intake takes up the space where the factory hood latch goes as well as the ability to install any hood latch in the middle. So after looking at different options, I decided to install stainless hood pins. But instead of the hood pins coming through the hood, I opted to install the pins on the hood and pin the hood through the grill opening.

I made some boxes out of 18 ga steel. I proceeded to drill 11/16" holes in the proper location and welded 1/2" cage nuts on the inside. This will give me some flexibility for adjustments. Once the mounts were welded on the hood I then screwed the pins on the hood. Made some minor pin adjustments, dropped the hood and viola. Still have my 3/32" gaps and pinned through the grill opening. Pleased with the outcome and work great! Need to clean up the welds and tig it. I should have just tacked it in place, but got carried away. :whistling:

No --- It was a '55 -- I saw it later over at Barry Whites Street Rod Repair... languishing in the corner. I don't know if it was ever finished. Probably moved there after Marcel finished the metal work.

So, I took Friday off for a 4 day weekend to get some work done on the car. I never liked the underside of the car from the rocker panels to the frame. I decided to make some panels that would cover it all up for a cleaner appearance. First thing I did to make sure the pinch welts were even. Most of the time they are very wavy both up & down and side to side. So I took a 5' piece of 1/2" of square stock and tacked it along the pinch welts to use as a guide. I hammered them flat to it then used a grinder to make sure they were 1/2" all the way down. I took a piece of 18ga metal 2 3/4" inches and rolled a step in it. The step did 2 things. Let me use it as a guide up against the pinch welt when I tacked it in, and also will let the panels sit flush once installed. (You'll see in the pics) I then proceeded to make 2 panels that run full length of the car that will tie into the front of the rear tub and rear of the front inner wheel well. Came out pretty nice IMO. Tieing in the rear will be easy once I get the rear tires off the car. I placed a 2" 90* break in the rear. Just need to extend the rear tubs down a few inches. The front ones will be a little tricky but I have a good game plan..I think!! Currently I have the panels being held with Cleco's, looks a little busy. Once done I plan on using 12-24 button heads. Both passenger & drivers sides completed! Still have one more day of no work. We'll see how far I get!

OK, a little productivity for today. I was able to get the passenger inner wheel well done and tie it into the in the side panels. Took some time to get it all done. Hard when you have a rolled angle at the fender & it remains flat at the frame. I also was able to get the tranny cooler mounted. I was running out of options up front. So I opted to mount it behind the pass front tire. Should get plenty of air there. It's a stacked plate which cool extremely well, plus I went one size larger from their recommendation. They didn't think it would be problem with the location. I plan on using stainless mesh in the openings to protect the cooler from any debris. The inside of the wheel wells and panels will all by done in Raptor bedliner material. Now off the driver side which I already have a good jump on.

Brent - Shot in the dark, depending on the gauge you might consider backing up the stainless mesh with expanded metal to provide impact resistance. 3/4 minus rock at velocity could cut the stainless.

Thanks Scott. That is a good point and a very good possibility. The stainless I'm thinking about using (which I already have), is .060. So fairly thick and should be resilent. I have been thinking of something different though and powerdercoat black so it just goes away vs. seeing stainless mesh. Maybe just use perforated metal and be done. We'll see.

With both sides now complete time to take action in the rear area. Going to tie it all together and run pans from the rear of the tub to the bumper. Thinking it will be 3 pieces. This will take some time. I have it sketched out what I'm looking for. We'll see how it comes out in the fabrication process.

Been awhile since I have posted any pics but I have been making some progress in the rear area. I have tied the side rocker panels into the rear tubs and now continuing the rear treatment. The mufflers ended up hanging just a tad below the quarter panel. I had to extend the rear quarters about 2 3/4" in the rear but tapers off as it gets to the wheel well. Once this was done I was able to make the panels. I'm not sure how hot it will get back there but I plan on wrapping the mufflers and also cutting opening and using perforated metal for breathing. I'm pretty sure that will be enough. If anybody has any other ideas I'm open for suggestions. Last night I made the rear cover for the tank and looking at the lines for bead rolling. Have a crazy week this week but should be done next week.

Thanks for advice Lenie. Where did you get the blankets? I planned on coating everything as well. Just a little concerned with heat and being next to the frame and panels. I have plenty of room between the trunk floor and quarter panel. I know the mufflers are going to get hot but by the time it reaches the back I'm thinking it will not be that bad. Just want some reassurance. Maybe I'm over thinking it but I would rather be overkill than have an oh crap moment!! :) :)

Well, still been plugging away on it still. After weighing out my options on how to manage any potential heat issues around the muffler area I decided to use perforated metal. The rear area of the tire is open to draw air in and with these openings now I think crisis adverted!I still plan on coating & wrapping everything. This is just some added insurance. I also finished the rear pan as well.

Here is the pan

Add some NACA ducts just ahead of the exhaust and as you move forward the air will flow. The bottom of the Lotus is just flat panels and the ducts are plastic - but it's this SHAPE - done in metal -- would like good and be effective.

Latest and greatest......Been working on all of the little details underneath that take so much time. I finished up E-Brake set up. I like using Control Cables Inc. products. Their products are second to none and great people to work with. I used their late model style push on - push off pedal assembly. All of the cables, clamps etc. are done. Mounted the fuel regulator & filter. Mapped out all of the fuel & brake plumbing. I drew it all out on the frame with a good ole' sharpie. Took notes and made a list of what to order. Once the body comes off the frame in a few weeks I will do all of the bending and fitment knowing nothing will interfere. I fit the rear brakes, wheels and tires. Made sure everything cleared so no hidden surprises during final assembly. I'm using iForged wheels. 20X11 in the rear with a 315/35-20. With that said I can officially say that the rear half of the car is 100% complete. Onto the inside this week for console & dash work. Here are a few pics...

http://i591.photobucket.com/albums/ss355/DuPont55/Caliper-1.jpeg

Here are the wheels. I did them in full polished finish for now. Once I finalize the colors on the car, I will determine the color of the wheel centers.

I need to get better on updating my thread. One would think being a Mod and always here it would come natural! Go figure... Anyways I'm still plugging away. I have been working on the bumper fitment, rear exhaust area, radiator hoses, dash, console and other things . I had Sherm's Chrome rough the bumpers in for me. These started out as 3 piece bumpers that have been welded together as 1 piece smoothies. Of course nipped and tucked for a nicer fit. Took a lot of work to get them to fit like this but well worth it. I really wanted the lines of the front bumper to match up with the fender lines as they swoop down. I ended up raising the bumper 1/2" to clear the front apron and moved back over an 1" to make this happen. Kind of needed the extra ground clearance anyways with as low as it is. Well here are the final pics...

http://i591.photobucket.com/albums/ss355/DuPont55/DriverLines.jpg (http://s591.photobucket.com/user/DuPont55/media/DriverLines.jpg.html)

http://i591.photobucket.com/albums/ss355/DuPont55/Passlines.jpg (http://s591.photobucket.com/user/DuPont55/media/Passlines.jpg.html)

http://i591.photobucket.com/albums/ss355/DuPont55/DriverGap.jpg (http://s591.photobucket.com/user/DuPont55/media/DriverGap.jpg.html)

I made the side mounting brackets with 3/4" round tubing with right & left hand rod ends. Makes it real easy to set perfect gaps. Ignore the extra stud on the bumper. That will not be used and taken off before chroming.

Wayne, I should have taken pics of what I gave them. Pretty much junk for the most part. I gave them all 6 pieces. They stripped them, cut them down, studded them & then welded together. I picked them up for final fitment and made some adjustments. I will take them back in the next couple weeks and then they will do all of the finish work and chrome. They have been great to deal with and lucky for me they are 20 mins away. Not cheap.....But well worth it!

Made some more progress this past week. I was able to get the radiator hoses done. Did them in hard stainless. It's a double pass radiator so both inlet & outlet are on the driver side. The rubber ends will be shortend up quite a bit. Just need to make a trip over to Alex @ Big Head Motorsports to be welded up. I'll be welding some tabs to attach the lower hose to the bar in front front of it. I also still need to cut off the original style core support mount. This was the last of fab work before teardown.

Well, time to resurrect this thread once again. Although I have not posted any updates in quite awhile I have been making good progress! The body is on the rotisserie and wrapped up all of the metal work underneath. I can say the body is 100% done and ready to go. With the body done it was time to tackle the chassis. I wanted to get everything installed to do one last fitment of everything and make sure no issues once final assembly gets underway. With everything installed it was time to do the brake line plumbing. I want to throw some major props to Mark @ Bent Fab and others for sharing their knowledge in this dept. If you are going to do some plumbing and have not read the thread Tubular Tuesday's that Mark started, do so. There is a ton of info in there. http://www.lateral-g.net/forums/showthread.php4?t=28726&highlight=tubular

From thought process to completion, I can say it took me a week to get all of this done. I started with aluminum welding rod to make templates. I then bought 5 sticks of just regular brake line and bent those up before moving onto the stainless lines. Best $25.00 I spent.

Enough talk...Here are pics is the finished product. Very pleased with the results. Now onto the fuel system which will be easy in comparison.

The work done is beautiful !!

The only thing I would "question" is the T placement for the rear brakes. I wonder if this placement wouldn't cause a slight engagement bias to the passenger caliper before fluid is pushed across to the driver side. These t's are normally centered in the car... IDK -- but I'd look into it.

I didn't realize this was being built as a straight line car?? That 4 bar link will bind up like crazy in any corner. I know this from building my brother in laws Pro Street car. It just doesn't like to turn. Rides great! But just don't ask it to lean into any turn.

Ricochet
12-06-2015, 02:16 PM
Thanks for props Greg! In regards to the T, I don't think it's an issue. I looked at quite a few different builders and have actually seen some put the T on the driver side by the coilover and then run a line to the pass side. Maybe an optical illusion, but my T is centered. I just double checked the measurements and I'm within 1/8" from the T to each caliper. I know what your saying about the rod ends on the 4 bar also. I bought this frame (I'm embarrassed to say.. Lol!!) 11 years ago, and we know how far technology has evolved since. I'm going to swap the ends for either Johnny joints or have DSE make me some swivel links. Appreciate the input!! I'm always open for suggestions.

that rear suspension is technically called a 4 bar not a 4 link, and as you can see it is setup already with poly albeit non-articulating bushings. Several companies still sell that setup as "street". I don't think you will have a particular problem with binding in normal street driving. Its not as ideal for cornering as other setups in terms of performance, but I don't think you necessarily need to re-think the setup or bushings, although Jonny joints probably would free it up.

Other than the geometry of the IC and stuff, eg from a binding perspective, how different really is it from the DSE style 4 link that for example Stielow uses, the only difference I know about is they (DSE) use some big compliant rubber bushings that flex just a bit more than these poly bushings.

I just don't even know how to respond to these thoughts. Do you really "think" that a 4 bar wouldn't experience bind in corners - and that it's similar to a triangulated 4 bar.... and that DSE sells anything like this.

You do realize that the DSE Quadralink uses a swiveling bar system (on all 4 bars used) in an effort to become non-binding as the car rolls?

preston
12-07-2015, 09:01 AM
Of course it experiences bind in the corners.
But thousands of these systems have been built and sold - is it significantly different from the GM angled 4 bar or the Mustang Fox 4 bar ? Those systems depend on bushing and arm flex to handle the bind. One reason the 4 bar with poly bushings is problematic is because it does not allow as much freedom of movement.

I was not aware that the DSE system uses swiveling bushings. Every picture I have seen of the quadra link they look like bigger rubber bushed rod end style or impregnated rubber bushings. I just went over there and looked - I was not aware of their swivel link system. Interesting solution and I stand corrected on that. But I am looking at the 2005 Build Book for the Joe Rogan 1970 Cuda that uses a DSE 4 link that clearly is not using swivel links, for the reasons you stated they have moved on from that.

That doesn't obviate my main point that 4 bar systems with closely spaced links and joints that allow some flex have been used in thousands of street rod, oem, and aftermarket suspensions.

Where people get into trouble is with rod ends at all 4 links, especially with stiff tubular links and especially with true drag racing 4 links with large non-parallel link paths.

Wasn't looking to get into a tiff over it, just reassuring Ricochet its not gonna be a disaster just to turn corners on his street car.

Totally agree Preston -- and the car will be just fine to drive. My point was more that this is a "pro touring" website and maybe Brent was looking to join the fun on the AutoX course or Road race course. The suspensions we see today are pretty spectacular compared to what was available 10 years ago....

I really wasn't trying to get him to change it etc -- I was more just surprised to see that type of suspension "here".

Regardless - the build is spectacular!

Thanks for input Preston and Greg!! I know the suspension is outdated in comparison to what's out there today. And although I don't plan on tracking this car on a regular basis, I do plan on having some fun with it. As I mentioned, I had already planned on changing out 4 of the ends to Johnny Joints, or have 4 swivel link bars made by DSE to make it better than it is. At the end of the day I just want it to be a nice garage built car the will perform as good as it can, but more than anything be a blast to drive!

Thanks again for the kind words Greg! I can finally see the light!!

Great job Brent! Where did you get the AN brake fittings? I'm always looking for multiple sources.

Jay, I bought all of stuff through Pure Choice Motorsports. They are out of Arizona.

The only thing I would "question" is the T placement for the rear brakes. I wonder if this placement wouldn't cause a slight engagement bias to the passenger caliper before fluid is pushed across to the driver side. These t's are normally centered in the car... IDK -- but I'd look into it.

Brake lines transmit pressure, not fluid. The location of the "T" fitting really does not affect anything. Just look at your front brake lines as an example. The distance from the MC to the calipers is never the same from left to right.

He is actually correct. Think of it as two lines at say Disneyland. One line might be way longer but when you let 3 people get on to the ride everyone moves 3 steps forward. Doesn't mater how long or short. Same go for the brake pedal once the lines are bleed.

It's just basic hydraulics.

Passenger side brake lines are always way longer on cars due to master cylinder locations of left hand drive cars.

The brake lines would be the little ropes keeping people in line, the fluid is what you are referencing. Pressure is transmitted through fluid. I agree that he won't have an issue with different length hardlines though. Flex/soft lines would be a different issue.

. Flex/soft lines would be a different issue.

Why?

ironworks

Why?

The brake lines expand due to pressure. Rubber lines worse then the steel braided lines.

Sorry to sound argumentative, but again no. Different length flex lines on left vs. right sides of a car will not affect the amount of brake torque at the respective left and right wheels. The pressure everywhere in the system is the same (everywhere in the front system or in the rear system assuming dual bore MC or dual MC).

The only thing that flexible (expandable) lines will do is increase the distance you have to push the brake pedal in order to get to the same brake pressure. This makes the brakes feel mushy and difficult to modulate. But the ultimate force applied to the pedal to yield a certain brake effort will be no different than if all the lines were solid and non-expanding.

Well.. Once again... The dust gets blown of this thread... Although I haven't posted much in a long time... Still been moving forward... It's officially off to paint!! Curtis' car finally got wrapped up so mine was next in line... And yes... Jim (Painter) has quite the sense of humor... The parking sign was out front when I rolled up... We're just a few years late.... But hey... We're finally on to the next chapter...... 647486474964750

Love that it's going to paint Brent. Now sign up for the Hall of Fame Tour 2020 and come have some fun with us.Been way to long since I've updated this thread and to see that Greg was the last one to comment brought up some good old memories.. We all miss him....

In between then (when I dropped it off at Jim's for paint) and now my son and I built a 68 Camaro (Project Memory Maker.. which Jim also painted). Between that and life itself for both myself and Jim the 55 stalled for a bit. I've been very quiet about it but we've still been plugging away on it and it's back and rolling hard.

Bodywork is 100% done. Currently the car is blown apart and on the dolly. Wrapping up the underside and will be sprayed in Raptor liner. I've had the chassis for a couple months wrapping up some loose ends on that...

Pics are just random to show where we are at this point.
