View Full Version : And Penny just keeps on changing...

Steve,
I think the continuation of return winners is great. It gives the other nominees showing up a chance to beat the title cars. I also feel the way Optima invites are picked is somewhat fair but why not chose a car from each event (GG, Motorstate, etc.) or would that be too many to fill the ticket. IMO the winner should be invited for years to come until beaten or in your case retire LOL.
The rebirthing of Penny is coming along sweet Steve, what made you decide on changing out the shocks for the Penske's.
Maybe I missed your explanation in the rebuild thread or is it a status, got to have them situation
Yea, it's fun to go back.. to be honest if we wouldn't have lost a PS pump we would have came in third overall.. if the rules were like they will be this year (where you get points for placing instead of an added time) we would have finished second behind the Cobra.. So Penny isn't quite past her prime yet.
Many of the events like Motorstate and such ARE qaulifier events.. So you wish has come true.
The switch to Penske is because they are willing to work with us to make a shock to fit the car. None of the "off the shelf" Bilstien sizes are working in our wierd application. The delay is that F1 called our guy to Europe and since they spend a bit more $$$.. lol

We start the machine work early next week.. everything is here, sorted and ready to go in. Only thing I'm waiting for is the custom Canton pan to be finished.
Install on August 26th at the latest.. then ready for the Holley LS-Fest and RTTH events.

OK Steve, need info on this new motor.
RHS short deck block - 4.155 bore
Mast Motorsports 12-degree LS7 bad ass heads
Lunati Pro Crank - 4.250 stroke
Lunati Pro I-beam rods - 6.125"
Weisco pistons (11.3:1) designed for the stroke
ARP everything
FAST 102mm LS3 style intake
Mike Norris ported TB and transition ring
CHE bushed LS7 rockers
COMP vertical bar lifters, pushrods, timing chain, etc
Moroso oil pump
We have two camshafts to try.. one is really snotty.. both are hyd.
The smaller is a just a touch bigger than the one in my 454.. the other is.. well.. bigger
Thought it would be fun to see the power differences.
Displacement is 461 cubes.. With the big cam we should be over 700.. no idea on torque but more than I need.
I will say the finish work on this RHS block is pretty damn impressive

That RHS block is pure sex! I've seen it on a few builds over on LS1tech and they seem to be the hot ticket if you're going all out.
Nice job Steve; sounds like your NA motor will be top of the heap unless someone buys Tyler's 'friend's' C5....:willy:

Yeah, but by the time someone gets that C5R engine running Steve will have something more badass than a C6R engine in his car. I don't believe for a second this will be Penny's last engine. There will always be something better, and someone will always want to give whatever that may be to Steve

Yea, for an NA motor it should be able to least have a fighting chance against all these blowers.. but the lack of weight will pay off huge in tight handling like autocross and such.
The C5R deal is sick.. although running race gas would make me sad.

I will tell you.. swapping out engine on a "done" car is a real PITA.. I really don't need to swap from the current 454 but I was asked by RHS/COMP to build something and they've always been great to me.
Really don't know what I would build to go beyond this. I could dry sump it but my Canton pan has never let down so why? To go bigger I would have to move to a tall deck block and that would mean custom headers and intake.. no thanks to either of those.
I need to spend time dialing in shocks and such.. but I learn more everytime I do this engine exercise

Small update..
8300RM Penske shocks are done and will ship to Global West on Monday. Supposed to have some new uber valve in it. :woot:
Yesterday I drove her to Best Of Show where we dropped the Magnum and replaced it with the one from Track Rat. Solve the first gear problem so the syncro was def bad as I suspected. The one from the car will be shipped back to Tremec and fixed for Track Rat.
Have done this so much that it's now a three hour job. Thanks Chris!
New, longer rear wheel studs are installed.
BottomFeeder front spoiler deal was modified and installed.. nice little item.
Sometime this week will swap out the cam for a three bolt version and install the Penske shocks. We will test the car on the 30th with the Pozzis and Penske is flying out an engineer to help set her up and to help set up the 2010 SS which is getting a prototype set of Penske replacement struts.
Car runs good now but I need to deepen the oil pan near the front crank lobe since it's too close and frothing the oil a bit. Engine runs, in hot weather, at 180.. even in high traffic it wont go over 190. Oil temps are actually too low and in the 180 range. If I try hard they will go 200 so I will make a block off for the Setrab for street use.
Two new 275/35/18 viper spec PS2s are on the way.. anyone want to buy my slightly used old tires?

Don't make a block off -- just put in a thermostat.... You'll forget the block off on a track day - and that won't turn out good.

I have a 215 degree Canton t-stat.. but a little always bypasses through it.
My oil temps are taken at the pan.

I thought you did.... I spent some time that day at BOS studying your system when we stopped by before RTTC. Loved the execution of the whole system. The rest of the car is "okay" I guess. If that's what you're in to. :D
Guess it should bypass some oil. Surprised that it runs that cool though with the thermostat installed but I've never had one so what do I know!

My good guy price for the story was over $500 per a corner.. I think retail is just over $800 per corner. And that doesn't include springs but I won a full set of Eibachs at last year's Optima

New 8300 RM shocks are now installed and ready to rumble.
BIG thanks to the guys at Global West (Doug and Eric) who worked their asses off to get these on and get them on right. The front was pretty straightforward but they still had to make some spacers and shims in thier machine shop.
The rears were a bit more challenging since we were moving to the upper shock mount. Doug didn't like the load that would be placed on the bolt in that location so he and Eric came up with a way to brace the bolt off the roll cage. Double sheer for all you nerdy engineers out there. The cans are in the trunk so adjustments will be a snap.
Took an initial guess at the settings and so far I'm pretty happy. The car road a ton nicer on the 40 mile drive home and the 215/91 is one of those plate freeways which can be a real kidney killer. We have tons of compression and rebound and overall everthing looks good.
Rear upper shock mount and canister mount: (Thanks to Cris at JCG for the super cool reservoir mounts.. they worked perfectly.

One issue we had was not enough travel (especially bump).. now with the higher mount and reservoir we have tons. It also helped that Doug at GW nailed the shock length (18 inches).
More than enough.. this is at static ride heigth.

Since we have the same front sub...show me some pics. Did you change the stroke up front as well? Why did you invert the shock up there?
Can't wait to hear the results/impressions.

Very nice... it's about time you caught up with the Jones's :)
The best thing that I can say about the Penske's is that their customer service and preparation is off the chart. I've had the OLC's shocks revalved twice, rebodied once (shorter body allowing for longer travel), and emergency repaired once (be broke an AN fitting at RTTC just before OLoA). Say what you want about the up front cost - these should be the last set of shocks you ever need to buy.

We inverted it just to make getting to the adjustments even easier.. now the remote canister is off the "top" and right there in the engine bay.
Went with a 15.5" front 8300RM but remember I have the 1.25" drop spindle so your results will vary.
We have TONS of travel.. in fact the shocks are so good we ditched the rear bar today.. let's just say Penny is much much faster on the autocross now.. Yea to Penske and Global West

Oh, Penske wants to revalve your shocks since you are full soft and put where you are now in the middle. We ended up removing the rear bar..

Any updates Steve?
Been busy on the engine side and work got in my way a bit. :)
Went with David Pozzi over to Nelson Racing Engines to build the new RHS/COMP 460 engine. We both learned a ton.
First "problem" was we didn't expect such a thin head gasket for the RHS deal. Typically we're use to a 51 and this was 41 compress which pushed our compression (static) from 11.3 to 11.5
Fairly confident that the cam overlap will bleed some off, but it's something to watch.
We take it to Westech on Tuesday for dyno. Right now I'm heading to BOS to pull out the 454 which is going in David's Camaro.
I will also be switching to Centerforce's twin disc clutch. After doing one in the 2010 SS I'm sold on how badass this thing is.

After all the racing and brake set ups etc... do you wish you would have done more with the master cylinder (dual m/c's with balance bar etc) or is the single dual reservoir plenty? Just wondering how it works in the real world track environment you're putting it thru - since you certainly have "enough" moRtivation to get some speed on! :unibrow:

BOS was installing a Tilton floor mount pedal system in Alcala's car yesterday.. and see it I did wish I had that system.
BUT.. both my Wilwood and Baer systems never let me down and at last year's Optima we placed second in the braking challenge just behind the Cobra (and just ahead of a GT-R) so they do get the job done and are very simple to live with.
My Wilwood is 1" because I liked the feel better.

What headers are you going with on this engine?
The same ones I've always ran.. 1 7/8 stepped long tubes made for the subfram by 21st Century. That's the same size we used on the dyno. Two inch would make more power but A. that's a PITA and B. I don't need more power. ;)
Steve1968LS2
10-03-2010, 09:03 AM
I also switched to Centerforce's new twin disc clutch.. now typically I'm against these since they are more of a PITA than helpfull, but we installed this on our 2010 Camara and it was both stupid easy to install and felt like a stock clutch in the car with zero rattles or issues.
The flywheel is steel but the edge has been lightened and from a MOI standpoint is equal to an aluminum unit without the associated problems. Should hold up better to the power and to how I drive.

Greg, some of us aren't as lucky as Steve, and after all the time and money I spent trying to fine tune and fix my system to no avail, I figured I might as well change pedals and get a full floater when I had the opportunity. The amount of adjustment that system has just boggles the mind. After all, what can I say? I've learned well from the man who, when he needs to change oil just gets a new 461 LS motor because he has the opportunity

Your new Tilton pedals are freaking badass.. I wish they were easier to install. :)
Why change oil when you can change engines? lol

Steve,
Did you change the oil pan? If memory serves, you had a road race milodon on the car last time?
I had a Canton pan on the last two engines.. great pan but with this 4.250 stroke there just wasn't enough pan clearance.
I found the Autocraft pan had more overall clearance so I'm running that but I did have to notch the front of the pan to clear my rack. Very nice pan, heavier than the Canton, but stronger as well.
What I really need to do is draw out a pan and have Canton make me a custom one that will give me maximum clearance and fit in my frame.

what will the rod ratio be on the new 461 engine? as opposed to the old one? thx, rm
F'd up.. lol
6.125 rod.. 4.250 stroke..
But with modern technology rod/stroke ratios and under/over square isn't as critical as it use to be.
This engine is 4.155 x 4.250
The 454 was 4.185 x 4.125 (which I prefer)

Lean smells Fat. Not sure why I know that.... but it does.
Unburned fuel is oxygen rich and can trick the O2 into thinking it's pig fat so it corrects and goes lean. Or something along that order. I had that issue with mine once. We fixxxxxxeedddeded it.

It was funny.. it got progressively worse.. throttle response slowed.. kept getting leaner.. RPM dropping.. computer was all flumixed.. nothing a good tune can't fix.
GregWeld
10-20-2010, 08:43 PM
Steve, sorry to hear you can't talk. Is the wife happy about that? :D
My problem - if I remember right - was the tuner (me) thought the idle was fat - so took fuel out - which then made the A/F not burn well - which caused a lean miss - which read fat cause of the unburned fuel - which caused the tuner (me) to take out more fuel -- and well -- you get the picture.
The only computer I should get near is one that just does email.

But SEMA waits for nobody.. lol
New wheels are on the car and she goes tomorrow to dyno tune then back to BOS so we can finish up all the little stuff.
Shaun Dove (TwinSting) over at EVOD showed me a new deal he is doing. In short he has a way to cast emblems now. So he took my Bad Penny logo, scanned it, made it 3Dish and then made centercaps for my wheels.
He said he ca do this with any logo or car name and the cost for the entire set of custom one-off center caps is only about $250. Considering the billet Forgeline caps run $200 that's a hell of deal.
He can color them many ways, these he used a dye to give the patina copper look.
He can also do one off emblems as well (like if you had a car name or something) for under a hundred bucks.

i gotta admit though with the new wheels not having a dark center and penny being such a bright colored car it look real showy, almost like when you see it from the outside you'd expect it to have some fancy exotic int. and alot more shinny stuff under the hood. its always amazing how much the wheels really change the whole look of a car.if you decided to have the centers darkened would it add less weight to just have the guys a b.o.s paint the centers instead of having them p.c.ed ?
But IMO the polished lips totally belong on penny it it just ties in much better that the brushed hoops since she's got all the polished trim.

Thanks AJ.. and to all that gave the car/wheels compliments.. I build the car for myself, but I would be lying if I said it didn't make me feel good to hear the positive comments (and the negative ones in a wierd way)
I would say 90% of the people like the new wheels and 8% prefer the darker centers. To be honest I always missed the polished hoops and I sorta miss the grey centers. But in a year it will easy to make them grey to once again change the car.
And you're right, the wheels can totally change the car, remember the black wheels from the first Optima? that might as well have been a different car.
At first the copper centers through me off.. I'm more subtle and would have done brushed nickel but the copper fits the theme and after a day of staring at them they copper sort of blends in and adds a nice accent. Plus they are just too damn cool. lol
I make enough power that I don't have to worry about the weight diff between paint and power and power holds up WAY better.

Even if I ordered up a hundred I doubt they would be cheap enough.. I might ask though.. if they got down to a couple bucks, maybe. lol
-----------------------------------------------
Well.. hit the chassis dyno today.
The bad..
Found out that the smaller bell on the new H20 pump makes my belt come close to my upper radiator hose.. under flogging it barely left a mark on the blue tape we put there to check it. Will have to fix it this weekend.. it's always something.
My O2 sensors are shot.. ordered some that will be here Friday, for now the car is in open loop
New engine idles at 210/215 all day long.. We engine dynoed at 175 degrees.. the difference makes the car not like 91 octane. Seems like it would be good to go on 95ish.. but not 91. Sort of a buzz kill.
So the plan for now? Well after we did the dyno pulls we made sure the tune was safe and filled her up with 100 octane.. smells great.. :)
After SEMA, in January, I will pull the engine and lower the compression, maybe by going with a thicker Cometic gasket and opening up the heads a bit. Right now I'm at 11.5 and I need to be 11.1 or maybe 11.2 static. This will also give me a chance to get my one off oil pan made by Canton that will accomodate the long stroke and give me all the room I can get.
Other than that life is good... as for the dyno:
The 90mm TB is really choking the engine down.. we guess that the new 102 TB on the way will free up at least another 20hp.

I didn't get greedy.. we just got surprised with a really thin head gasket from RHS. Hoped it would be fine with the overlap and that dynamic would be in a sweet spot. Oh well.
Could put in the bigger cam and drop dynamic, but I don't want the bigger cam. This is the first engine I've ever "designed" that came up needing more than 91 octane, but it happens.
The HP fell before 6000 instead of after (like on the engine dyno) because the 90mm TB is starving the engine of air at that level. The 102mm should help with that.
Only looking to drop it 4/10ths of a point.. we are just outside the 91 octane range. To be honest if I lived in a 93 octane state without all the crap additives we have here in CA I would most likely be fine. Here the next step from 91 is 100.. which sucks.
Anyways, just a temp problem that can be fixed.. for now I will enjoy the sweet smeels eminating from my tailpipes.. :)

Thanks everyone.. :)
I think my current TB might be one of my problems. Can't force the idle RPM below 1200.. might be letting too much air in. Will be curious is I can fix it with a new TB installed.
Has a 195 t-stat.. I want to later replace it with a 180 version. Right now it idles at 210 all day long, which isn't bad but I would prefer 200.
With this engine done I can spend the winter sorting the car.. I also need the find the source of a small battery drain I have. Electrical sucks..

Now see there would be ONE reason to move to Canada, we have 94 octane at the pump. and its only 5.20 a gallon. the 5.20 a gallon part is a good reason not to
i brought 15 gallons with me

Blake you can get 100 octane all over Vegas if you want/need it. It''s about $6 a gal, tho...

I didn't get greedy.. we just got surprised with a really thin head gasket from RHS. Hoped it would be fine with the overlap and that dynamic would be in a sweet spot. Oh well.

Awesome, Awesome car Steve!
Is your Dynamic around 8.75? Estimated it by looking at your specs..
Intake closing is?
The magic number for 91 octane is what under 8.25?

Found out I have walking Phumonia (sp?)... no wonder I feel like crap. Got three shots, and inhaler and some kick ass cough swill.

I would have to look.. static is about 11.5:1 -- which isn't bad at all. After talking with Mast we think it just needs a better tune.
Or we could put in the more aggressive cam which would lower the dynamic
And our 91 here is crap in the summer.. (and winter really)

I would agree.. the grey had a nice look.. I am enjoying the variety though. In a year I might get these done with grey centers. I think I prefer the polished hoops though, looks better with the orange paint.

Yea, actually real busy with work.. lots of stories lately. Plus I was pretty burnt out after Optima.. might have been a tad bummed over the broken sway bar deal. That's two years in a row I'm broken something there.. sucks.
Anyways, working on the car. Not many mods left to do besides install my fire system and maybe get some various hard lines done. Baer wants me to install thier new floater.
As for events, here's one I just did with a local group:
Not much done since Optima, fixed the sway bar and did a bolt check. Working on the little stuff. In January we will be making the DSE radiator closeout fit the new core support and finishing the install on the fire suppression system. Project is definetly getting to the point where everything is done. The tune is still a bit off, good at WOT, bad at idle and around town. Mike Norris will be fixing that when he comes out.
Will all the building done it's time to do some driving. People think "wow, that car's been done so long it must be all sorted out." but the fact is that the current form of BP is NOTHING like the car built back in my PHR days. Finally I will be able to get use to the car in its current state and get some track time (needed more for me than the car.. lol)
First up was hitting the local PCA autocross:
It was a very well ran event and I knew it would be that way when I arrived for tech and there was starbucks coffee and donuts set out. The PCA has a killer timing system that let them always have 4-5 cars on track at any given time. Because of this they were able to run around 90 cars 11 laps each!
Drove the course in 2nd gear and I could still break the tires loose easily. Had a great time and the others there liked seeing the "old" muscle car. I think it was a first time PT experience for most of them. On course worker said mine was the only car that scared them when they were working hte course since it was so loud and mean looking coming down the straight twords thier station. lol.. I took that as a compliment.
Anyways, if any of you have the chance to go to one of these specialty car events you'll have a blast and meet a lot of great people.
Oh, top speed was 72+ mph and my racepak showed lateral g's (sustained) of 1.2g+ in each direction. I ran in the 63.x range whereas cars with race rubber (A6, etc) were in the 58,59 range and all out track cars were in the 56 area. Next time I need a "pit bitch" to help me check tire temp/pres between runs since it's too hard to unbuckle and get back in quickly. :)
Here's a video.. if you go to YouTube there's a high-def version.. clouds look cool (rained in the afternoon which made for fun track time)

Great thread, brilliant mods and a well appreciated enthusiam for the sport and all things Protouring.....
The last photo is extremely relevant to me. I'm always comparing my Porche 996 to my '77 Camaro after mods. The major competition for the Camaro in the UK when it comes to hill climbs and street are cars like you have just posted. LOL!
Most UK American classics are either just that...Classics or dragsters.
This I believe is historically due to 1st and 2nd Gen Camaro's dominating the British Touring car championships (BTCC) from 1967 - 1972 and being effectively banned from competition by the "no engines over 3000cc (183 Ci) rule". Hence many European enthusiast assuming there is no such thing as a great handling American racing car. But we know better.....!

...Never heard of the paint program huh??(standard in every windows system) Just save a picture, open it, paint the trim you want (or do anything else you want- cut, lower, change etc etc) ....there you have it!
Have fun.

Been watching and enjoying "Penny" a long time.
I'm glad Steve still hangs in there with "Penny".
I have had many unexpected thing in my life that have slowed my Car progress down, but such is life, but since I don't quit, I still move forward abet slowly. (obligations to loved ones always move to the front of the line)
That said, to the situation. (Not the Loved ones)

Between the New product developement, and my Car(s), life is still good and focused.
I hope someday when I get there, I can meet Steve, and run some laps with him and others on this board.
Steve what is the latest on "Penny"?
I hope you both are well.
