Mr. Stielow, Where do we buy your book I see people talking about? Does is detail your ABS system work? And does it go over your computer choices for the ECM's and if or what you did with the LAN systems for the LS7/LS9?
Thanks
-Russell
My ABS system faulted out at the OUSCI. I have a new design inthe works. If all goes well I'll have a tech update in a few weeks.

MarkIt was a 1966 Cobra kit that I built, and there was a shot of me blasting down the highway,in Ohio when we went to the kit car shoot out in Columbus (It was a road course,Atuo X and Drag strip Event). They use to do it every year to see who built the best car's.I will see if I can dig up the issue and post up the photo. It was just a photo of me in the car nothing else. The Kit car shoot out's were alot like what Optima and Jimi day are doing now.

Very well done article. And I'm not generally a fan of C&D.
And I actually think that Pro Touring statement is fairly accurate. Maybe not spot-on, but not far from a darn good assessment either generally. :)

I took the Camaro to Gingerman Saturday to check out my new engine calibration and ABS fixes.
Check out this Youtube video of a couple laps.
Iz1Q_8HgY1c
The car worked great. I shaved 2 seconds a lap off my old lap times when I was there last year. That was with 1 year old very used up tires on a 91 degree day! My best lap was a 1:40.47 when I could get a clean lap. You can see in turn 4 I'm doing 100 MPH at 1 G lateral.
http://i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq118/Stielow65/Red%20Devil/DSCN0196.jpg
http://i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq118/Stielow65/Red%20Devil/DSCN0197.jpg
The new rear axle ABS set up had zero issues. No ABS drop out, no brake knock back and no leaks. My new axle uses Corvette ZR-1 bearing set up to go on the end of a Currie Ford 9 inch housing. I was having issues with my old Ford Big Bearing set up dropping the ABS signal. This set is basically a full floater with Corvette ABS sensor. It also allows me to use the Corvette park brake and a GM axle seal. The whole thing is awesome!
With the ABS working reliably I was able to use the brakes hard enough I discolored the Brembo caliper slightly. The clear coat on a Brembo caliper will yellow once you get above a certain temperature. I'm putting on the Stoptech brakes today to see how they work. Having the ABS be rock solid makes driving the car so much fun. On the last session I backed off the manual proportioning valve to allow the ABS to handle the dynamic proportioning. My braking distances are coming down and the brake feel is great.

The new blower is giving me 2 psi more boost so we had to move the over boost calibrations up and verify the new calibration. The engine ran great with the highest stabilized water temp of 231 degrees. On a cooler day I will make even more power. At 230 we are just starting to pull spark. I know you GEN I SBC guys freak out at coolant temps above 200. The new engine will work fine up to 235 degrees. They are happier at 210 -220 but it is still OK. I pulled a spark plug tonight and they look great and the inside of the headers are a nice light tan. The engine calibration is dead on. Since I put my Thomson Auto engine in my car I have had very little issues. We have driven this deal hard and it keeps on pulling. I love the fact it idles at 650 and rips when you hit it.
http://i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq118/Stielow65/Red%20Devil/IMG00037-20110904-21441.jpg
I used up the last of the old Goodyears, once they showed signs of the tread de-laminating we called it a day.
I think on fresh tires and a slightly cooler day we can go a little faster.
I'm almost ready to go back to the Optima Shoot Out after SEMA. The car is working great!

Awesome Mark, the speed those brakes take off so quickly is amazing and the car doesn't even seem to notice the transition.
We missed you at Putnam Park, you would have moved up past the top speed beyond Stacy's 129 mph by a lot from what I can tell in the video.
Late braking looks like so much more of an advantage I can't wait to be able to afford bigger brakes someday.
Thank again for the video

I designed all the parts in Unigraphics. I might make a short run of parts if you want a set. The problem is all these parts are expensive.

The housing end doesn't look that bad, but the amount of machine work in those axles, and the R&D time seems epic. I rarely see something anymore that makes me say wow. But wow, why didn't I think of that. I'm in the middle of working up the "normal full floater" for mine. Just figured you deserved some props for thinking that one through (ingenious). Ron

I had 4130 axle shafts made to mate the ZR-1 bearing on one end and a 31 spline Ford 9 inch on the other.
It also has a shoulder for a GM axle seal.

I've been working on this design since SEMA last year when my ABS faulted out. This design fixed the three things that made me mad on my old system.
ABS signal drop outs at high speeds and loads
Brake knock back
Rear axle leaks
It could be a bit over kill but I'm tired of messing with it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but that will not float per-see. Once the axle nut is torqued the axle shaft will become more or less rigid from the bearing into the housing, so very little camber or toe would be allowed. Unless the other end of the axle shaft has a radius to the splines.

I thought "float" referred to whether the hub is retained independantly of the axle. In Mark's case, if the axle breaks, the hub/wheel/tire stay with the car, which is a "full floater". With a stockish 9" arrangement, if the axle breaks, the axle could leave the housing, taking the wheel/hub with it. 9" is a bad example, 10/12 bolt would be a better illustration. The second case would be a "semi-floater".
I'm sure I'm missing something...

I was running a stock LS9 clutch. I switched to a Lingenfelter LS9 clutch with a higher clamp load. I had an issue with the adjustment and the pick-up point. The clutch was draggingwhen thepeddelwas fully pushed in. Seems like I had air in the system because it was good when I unloaded it last night. Going back though the set up to verify the stack-up.

Thanks Mark for the response,I'm also considering Lingenfelter LS9 Twin Disk or Katech's New LS9R Clutch. Both clutches have 20% more clamping force than a ZR1 unit.Should be plenty enough for a 550+ rwhp N/A LS Motor

I changed the brakes out to Stop Techs. We rebalanced the caliper pistons in the calipers to better optimized brake balance. The brake feel is great and with a more reliable ABS set up my braking distances are coming down.

http://i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq118/Stielow65/Red%20Devil/DSC_3878.jpg
I sorted out my clutch issue that I was fighting at Heidts and LSFest. After some research there is a 0.065 restrictor in the clutch hyd. line.
I remember an old article Jeff Smith did and looked it up.
http://www.chevyhiperformance.com/howto/39021/index.html
After that modification and a good brake bleed the trans / clutch are working great. It is a mix of OE and modified OE stuff. Working with 800 ft*lbs and trying to road race, drag race and street drive required a little sorting out.
The car ships today for “out West” for Pre-SEMA stuff then it will go straight to SEMA so this weekend was my last chance to tune on Red Devil prior to OUSCI. I think this year’s competition will be very tough. I added a bit more power, retuned the shocks, better ABS and rebalance brakes. I tweaked the areas I could for the event so now will have to wait until Nov. to see how it shakes out.

I was going to write up our day at Willow Spring but Optima Jim did a better job than I could on the Optima Power Source web site.
"When OPTIMA decided to film a new commercial, there was a short list of cars we knew we wanted to call on to represent our brand. While the TV folks who are in charge of creating the commercial spots were drawn to cars primarily based on what would look good on camera, we knew Mark Stielow’s 1969 Camaro would not only fit the bill from an appearance standpoint, but it would also be able to hold up to the rigors of a day’s worth of shooting on track.
http://i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq118/Stielow65/Red%20Devil/297110_10150831590270078_283142505077_21303591_510 353213_n.jpg
http://i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq118/Stielow65/Red%20Devil/PreDawnStaging.jpg
http://i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq118/Stielow65/Red%20Devil/IMG_0849.jpg
We unloaded the Red Devil Camaro before the sun came over the horizon. Mark fired up the 750-horsepower, supercharged LS motor and it quickly settled down into a comfortable idle. Mark then wandered off for a quick bite to eat, while his car sat comfortably idling in the parking lot- not what you would expect of a car capable of laying down 800+ ft.-lbs. of torque. There was no “blap blap blap” exhaust sound, no concern on Mark’s part about the car’s ability to sit idling, just a monster of an engine, quite lurking underneath the wrapping of a ’69 Camaro body.
The crew first asked Mark to head out on the road course at Willow Spring, a notoriously fast track, with many of the curves offering banking that allows a driver to carry more speed through the twisties. Mark took a couple of laps to get the car warmed up and get comfortable with his surroundings, before pulling down pit road, checking tire pressure and waiting for instruction.
Initially, Mark was asked to make some passes on the front stretch as audio of the car was captured. Then he was asked to do some burnouts. While the camera crew was hoping for lots of tire squeal, the Supercar II Goodyears simply vaporized into a smoky cloud, as Stielow power-braked down pit road. This process (and virtually every other scene they shot) was duplicated multiple times. All the while, the Red Devil Camaro just kept rolling.
Finally, the production crew pulled out on the track in a Porsche Cayenne, heavily modified for film use. Between the vehicle itself, the cameras and all the rigging equipment, if a bus-sized satellite dropped out of the sky, crushing the vehicle, some insurance company would likely be writing a check north of $1,000,000. Interestinly enough, the Cayenne features six OPTIMA BlueTop batteries, mounted in the camera boom. Three of the batteries operated the rig, while the other three operate the $250,000 camera, that swivels all the way around the vehicle.
http://i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq118/Stielow65/Red%20Devil/PorscheCameraVehicle.jpg
http://i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq118/Stielow65/Red%20Devil/OnTrackFilming.jpg
The fun really started when the Cayenne hit the track. Flat black paint helps minimize the reflections on the 2010 VW Salsa Red paint found on Stielow’s Camaro and while the Cayenne could never hope to hang with Stielow on the track, it did exceptionally well at speed, considering it was carrying five passengers and more than a thousand pounds worth of equipment.
The two vehicles literally spent several hours on the track, filming everything from high-speed flybys to drifting shots in the corners, with the camera crew encouraging Stielow to come within inches of the six-figure camera rig with his six-figure car.
The temperature at Willow Springs passed the 90-degree mark well before noon time, but the Red Devil Camaro worked through the lunch hour, pausing only to fill up with another tank of gas. Having been on location for dozens of magazine photo shoots, where the standard rule of thumb was that the more radical the ride, the less-reliable it is, it is safe to say no other car would’ve been able to sustain the amount of abuse Stielow and the camera crew threw at it throughout the day.
While Stielow’s Camaro is the reigning OPTIMA Ultimate Street Car Invitational champion, the rigors of a day of commercial filming far surpass any of the stresses put on the car in Pahrump last year. Even with the engine temperature hovering around 240 degrees, Stielow and the crew pressed on and the Red Devil Camaro never wavered in the heat. In fact, it wasn’t until the camera crew had decided they had everything they needed, that they noticed the right rear tire was losing air. When the Camaro came to a stop in the pit area, exposed threads were clearly visible on the runflats, which lived up to their name.
4HMR5t7L94w
http://i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq118/Stielow65/Red%20Devil/EndofDayTire.jpg
Still, the Camaro’s day was not done. As with many TV commercials, the hero ends the day by driving off into the sunset. The Red Devil Camaro rested for a few hours, before being called into duty again. This time, the duty was relatively-light, but with the right rear tire already hissing air, there was concern that the tire would come off the rim as Stielow turned the corner and drove off into the sunset.
Several takes later, the tire did keep it’s grasp on the rim, but Mark was convinced a few more takes and the rim would’ve been history. It was an incredible day for an incredible car and we’re very thankful Mark Stielow was willing to absolutely abuse his car for OPTIMA Batteries’ benefit.
The list of invitees for the 2011 OPTIMA Ultimate Street Car Invitational is shaping up to be the most-talented in the history of the event and there are serious doubts as to whether or not Stielow will be able to repeat as champion. Whether he does or not, after what we witnessed at Willow Springs, there is little doubt in our mind that the Red Devil Camaro is one of the all-time Ultimate Street Cars."
It was a crazy day with a lot of drama and the film crew asking for "one more take" right up to the point that the RH tire when away. Glad we pulled it off and we didn't hurt the car much. Swing by the Optima booth at SEMA and check out the footage.
See you guys at SEMA. I have a month with no Red Devil... I guess I'll work on my next project.

I think after SEMA it may need to have some areas re-painted. I don't thing Mother Showtime is going to tune that road rash up. At least there is no body work needed. I was so close to the camara I could not see it in front of the car as I was sliding past it with the tires blazing. I think this film footage is going to be awsome.
I'm impressed how well the black on the bottom and wheel wells are holding up and the rest of the car.
I hope to get it all tuned up prior to the car show in Chicago. Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals http://www.mcacn.com/. Nov. 19 & 20. We will have Red Devil, Jack Ass and the Mule there togther. We will have some of the "B roll" of the Optima shoot at that show.

The ZL-1 Camaro is AWESOME! We beat the hell out of both the manual and the Auto at the MRC for the test. Basically we just kept putting fuel, tires and brakes on them and kept rolling. They are very easy to drive fast. Lots or power, grip and brakes.

I have a ton of work to get done on the '67 and also do my full time job. Fortunately Matt Gurjack at Sled Alley is doing a ton of work to the car and it is turning out killer. His fab work is top notch.
Paul and Joe VanNus will get the car in a few weeks to start painting it.
