It amazes me the power and reliability these factory GM peices provide. I'm in the middle of assembling an LS7 for my Mustang, some of the parts in that engine are so far beyond anything the aftermarket had just a few years ago. Love the build Mark. Ron

So the dyno pull was done with Stock headers? Omg
800 ft/pds of Torque at 3800 or so :wow:
Yep stock stuff
Stock LS7/9 headers
LS7 block with ARP studs and piston oil squiter added
Stock LS9 unported heads with better exhaust valves
Stock LS9 blower with new inlet and pulley ratio
Callies crank less heavy metal to balance

Working on a custom blower cover.
I want to remove the "LS9" on the cover and replace it with "7.0 L".
Still want to make it look OE

I have to ask, GM didn't think that block was sufficient for the LS9, why do you?
The LS7 block will handle it. The 6.2 liter has a shorter stroke and you can fit the oil squirters easier. The non-siamesed bores are better for cooling. My engine would never live thru a GM's durability tests and meet all the validation requirements. But I'm not expecting this engine to meet emissions and 100,000 mile powertrain warranty. The bigger bore and stroke make it harder to balance all the issues listed before. We are also pushing the blower harder than what it was validated to. But I guarantee this will last much longer than most "aftermarket" stuff.
I want to make big power for a hot rod. I'm in uncharted waters for a road race engine. If I can keep it cooled it will work. Jackass had no issues with cooling so I'm following that combo and added about 30% more cooling capacity.

Great numbers Mark and the car is looking great. The re-anodized fittings are a great idea.
Is the LS9 blower available stand alone in lieu of the whole crate engine or is this something you acquired through your GM resources. Is there any difference on the LS9 access. drive from the stock LS7. I see some slight modification on the bottom end, but maybe its only due to the sub frame.

They strip them for $50. For assembled hose ends it may cost more due to the stainless steel pin in the fitting that can't be anodized. You will need to call them to get the details on hose ends. I only did adaptor fittings, trim rings, battery holders and knobs.

Mark, clearly you have connections in GM that you can leverage to get the LS9 blower pieces, I think this is a fantastic approach. However, can mere mortals such as myself get the necessary top end parts to pull this off using their existing short block? I have a Darton-sleeved LS2 block that I have gone back and forth with wht to finish it off with for too long, a blower appeals to me a lot more than the complexity of a turbo setup. I honestly haven't done research to see if this is commercially available, but if you have a direction to point me tho, that would be a huge help.
Nice job on the build, as usual. Very cool.

All the parts are readily available at you GM dealer. The positive and negative to the LS9 blower is you need to run the LS9 accessory drive. It works and packages great but it is spendy. The blower is pricy also. I purchased my engine at Thomson Automotive. http://thomsonautomotive.com/home.cfm?content=ads.cfm.
To buy the blower, accessory drive, throttle body and sensors will cost a lot. A stock LS9 create engine is $21,000 and these 7.0 L engines are more than that.

Gotcha, might be a lot easier and more economical, albeit with less output to use one of the aftermarket units for my lesser project. By the way, the dyno graph is pretty awesome for a truly reliable powerplant (and relatively "simple" too based on leveraging GM's engineering talent....). Should be a real monster.
Mark, I understand that you are working with Hybrids at GM these days? I landed in teh same industry, but on the heavy duty side. Interesting stuff, it is strange to work with a lot of folks who's mission in life is to reduce emissions and fuel consumption, while I hobby on cars that are quite the opposite direction!
Best of luck with the build, and thanks again for the info.

Oven cleaner takes too long.... I use CRYSTAL DRANO -- it's about $3 a can -- it's powder (crystals) form not liquid... dump a little of it in a PLASTIC bucket -- string your fittings on something you can use to "dip" them (I use welding rod) add just enough water to get the mixture right. You know when it's right when the fittings start to "bubble".... it takes SECONDS not hours with this method. Rinse 'em in cold water and buff up a storm. :woot:

Mark,
I've been building PT cars ever since I saw the Red Witch build article in HRM back in '96. Thanks for the inspiration.
I'm in the final stages of building a '69 very much like yours, except mine has a wimpy little modified LS7. Dozens of track days in my previous cars have taught me the importance of cooling, cooling, and more cooling. I picked out the details of your diff cooling setup, but what are you doing for trans cooling? It looks like I could just use the existing fill and drain holes in the t-56, and plumb in a Weldon or other pump to circulate the fluid to a trans cooler? Are you using temp switches to control the pumps, or just turning them on manually?
On another note, I just went to order one of those slick Bottom feed air front spoilers, and I see the web site is gone. I hope they're not out of business ...
Thanks for any help you can give.

It is a one off system. My intent is to balance the car with out ABS then be able to turn the ABS on and off. If the system fails I want the base brake system to be balanced. A bunch of rear brake at the wrong time is bad.

Looks great as always Mark. When you get the ABS to work on your car, will you be willing to share with us the process so that we can all have safer cars as a result? (you know that's crap right? I just want to stop as fast as you and throw caution to the wind). Seriously, I hope it is something that you can share--it would certainly be a new inovation towards making this hobby/sport/living a safer, faster, and even funner deal.
Doug
It's not too terribly difficult to do, I've been running the Bosch 5.3 ABS (from a C5) for about a year now. Just mount the rear wheel speed sensors, use C5 front hubs, wire, plumb, and test it out. I have mine set up to switch on and off if I don't want it, but it has worked wonderful so far.

Mark, I know there are varying levels of this hobby, based on budget, available tools & fabbing skills, knowledge, and of course vision. But your build is just damn depressing to those of us that aspire to get a car even close to this level!!! LOL :hail:
I am so bloody impressed it's not even funny. In fact, I was planning on abandoning plans to attend the Motor State Challenge at Gingerman, but knowing that you will be there with the "Red Bomber?" and Charlie with Jackass and others, I am reinspired to go again.
Congrats on what you've accomplished so far with this build, you are an inspiration to all of us in this hobby. WOW

Well it has been a while since any updates. Work has been a little busy. I went to Korea for a couple weeks and I'm heading back Monday. So my plans to make Road America and Putnum Park are off. Shooting for Gingerman June 20.

I'm venting to it off the dry sump tank. The engine valve covers are vented to the dry sump tank. I sent the "clean" air port to the induction tube.
It looks like a nice part and a buddy told me Lingenfelt uses them on there car. He could be wrong.
The part looks good. I modified it to take -10 AN fittings the 1" ports looked a bit clunky.

Can't wait to see the finished product!
As for "new" door and quarter glass. I'd stay original if you've got a near pristine set handy. The aftermarket quarter windows that I've seen never seem to fit flush with the side windows and always look sunken back a tiny bit to me. Then again you don't strike me as the car show guy, or the type of guy that would care too much a little wind noise. Besides, shouldn't you know this, isn't this your 12th Camaro build, or something like that? :unibrow:

I reduced the ports to a 3/8" / LS standard push-on hose. Since I was not sure how much oil would be accumulated, I was not spending the bucks. MH suggests using them on big diesels so perhaps they need that large of a port.
It's used in the Porsche world as well. For many its appearance is a bit too OE, but from a functional and service standpoint, it's worlds better than any other.

I think Mark has done a few of his cars with single stage. We used Standox bc/cc on this car. As far as durability I feel not really an issue because Standox paint gets really hard once cured out. Doing an bc/cc makes up keep easier and in long run IMO paint will hold up better. I've done the add color to clear thing but that only applies to single stage and need's to be solid color too. :) Joe

Mark
My 67 glass came from Auto Glass city in MN. and it fit really well, everyone asks me where it came from because it looks so good. I might have just gotten lucky though. It is the smoked glass. I think Frank at Prodigy is selling the same brand of glass. Mine is 67 stuff and may have its differences. I did have to reinstall it and glue it in on the bottom channel after finding out too late that the rain storm I got caught in lubricated the press fit enough for it to come loose. I would have never had a problem if I hadn't driven it in the rain as it was up and down hundreds of times and never had a problem. As you probably already know the new stuff is just a bit thinner.
The car looks great and I look forward to seeing you at Gingerman.

We dynoed and tuned up Red Devil last night at Stenod Performance. After some tweeking RD made 594 ft*lbs at 4200 torque and 569 HP at 6300 to the rear tire. Compared to Jackass last year 460 ft*lbs at 4400 RPM and 498 HP at 6400. All dyno pulls were done with the coolant temperature at 220 F to simulate track usage. JA was fast but I think RD will be a bit faster.
The new calibration has 11,000 changes from what we had at Gingerman. The car hauls ass now. :woot:
The graph below shows Jackass with dashed lines and Red Devil with solid.

I ran my Camaro at a small track close to my house yesterday - Waterford Hills Race Way. I wanted to shake the car down after tuning it up. We also made some changes to try to get it to run cooler than it did at Gingerman. At Gingerman my coolant temp got to 245 F and my oil was over 280 F (off the gauge). We redid the calibration; I added a larger cooling fan and sealed off the rad to the rad support. The other big change was getting all the soap out of the intercooler system. (Tech Tip) NEVER USE DISHWASHING SOAP TO LUBE YOUR HOSES! I was looking for something to make trial fitting the hoses easier on my intercooler system so I used a little dish soap. My whole system was full of tiny bubbles. We finally just hooked a garden hose to the system and flushed it for 30 minutes to flush it all out. Oh well live and learn. That change alone gained us 50 HP on the chassis dyno due to be able to keep the charge air temps down.
I was able to run the car flat out for two 20 minute sessions with no issues and the coolant temp stabilized at 220 F and the oil was 260 F. On a hot humid day in MI on a moderate speed track I feel that is good. On my cool down lap I was to do a good 3 gear burn out down the back straight.
I drove the car to the track and drove it home with the A/C on. ;)
I got home and put the car up on jack stands to look the car over. The car leaked no fluids - NONE! I love LS engines. The whole bottom of the car is bone dry. If you have ever built a car like this and beat on it at a track you know how hard it is to keep the fluids in it. I'm very happy with the car and how all the DSE chassis works.
I still need to get the ABS up and running. I'll get on that next week. All the wiring checks out so no I think it may be a module issue.

John,
I spoke with Mark at that motorstate challenge, he has access to software to program it. Us mortals have to deal with a system that will not be optimized for the application. Matt from Morrison has adapted one to his 69 and seems to like it, but I have no idea if he was able to program his or not.

Mark stopped in at a local car show with it briefly today, you should have seen the size of the crowd slobbering all over it (me included). Got to talking with him a bit about the various systems, during which he mentioned the ABS system is from a 2006 Z06.

Well, I have a dilemma. This weekend I can take my car to Gingerman Raceway to a Ferrari Club track event and kick sand in the face of some uber Euro cars and eat brie and drink wine. Or I can go to Detroit and do an AutoX in a parking lot on Belle Isle (they find a few dead bodies on Belle Isle every year). Hmmm.
Ferraris, wine & cheese OR gunfire, grumpy SCCA people while standing in the sun shagging cones…..such a tough decision.
Well, due to the fact that the AutoX counts as the same amount of points at Optima as the road race portion, I need to go sort out my car for AutoX. “Honey where did I put my Glock and my AutoX tires”?
Since the Wal-Mart went to 24 hours I can’t practice there anymore.
Oh well, could be fun. I moved my speed limiter up to 60 mph because they said it would be a “fast” one.

The rack was a remanufactured part that had a defect in it. It looked liked it had been clamped in a vise at some point due to the marks on it. It developed a 2 inch long crack right in the middle of the vise marks. I installed a new rack that looks like it was deburred and have had no issues.
The ABS unit is a 2006 Corvette Z06 unit. I used the Z06 unit because it has the right calibration to match the Brembo calipers I'm runninG. Same piston volume as the PBR calibers.
The hardest things I had to were:
Getting passive rear wheel speed sensors in the Ford 9" with the correct number of teeth to get the pulses per rev correct. I ended up using 2004 Mustang wheel speed sensor and 2006 Mustang tone rings. I have a ton of time in making the backing plates to get the wheel speed sensor, park brake and the caliper to all fit up robustly. The front wheel speed sensors are production C-6 Corvette on the DSE front clip.
Building all the brake hardlines. I have about 40 feet of S/S brake line in my car. I purchased a hydraulic flaring tool to get all the flares right. For the inverted flares and the metric flares.
Building the wiring harness so it is not susceptible to EMF or noise. Routing it in the car to keep it away from heat and is durable.
Of the things that I did on the car ABS brakes was the hardest because it was the first time I tried it. I still have a prop valve in the system so if it faults out I will not have too much rear bias.
I got the system to work by tricking it to think it was installed in 2006 Corvette. Due to the fact I have a stock C-6 ECM in the car I hooked the CAN data stream up between the two. The other sensors were faked or installed.

Once I know all the bugs are worked out I can tell more. I'm still in the development part of this program. I do not want to give advice to people on brakes. If it goes bad it can go real bad. For those who don't know what "split Mu" is (like me 5 minutes ago :) ):
when a vehicle attempts to brake on a surface with uneven friction coefficient such as on wet or icy roads it is called a split Mu scenario
But 107 feet sounds good. Real real good. Thanks very much.

For comparison to the 107 feet.
I found this from a 2009 ZR-1 Corvette test.
"A set of carbon-ceramic brake rotors are included as one of the Corvette's most notable upgrades, and they're no joke. They provide enough bite to haul the ZR1 down from 60 mph to a stop in just 96 feet, an amazingly short distance matched only by the $192,000 Porsche 911 GT2."

Hmmm I'll assume thats what caused the 4th gen F-bodies to plow through corners on the track. I have heard it called " Ice mode ". Basically when you introduce race rubber and hard braking on the track the computer was confused on the what to do and released the brakes.
Mark do you know if the newer generation software was calibrated to a different outcome? I would assume so as I have not heard about vettes having this problem.

I'm modifiying the Holden chassis for the C5 cradle. I'm working out cradle height at the moment, could you tell me if the cradle is level to ground or is it tilted back some degrees when installed in the C5?.

Well I did my first SCCA AutoX today in 15 years. It was just liked I remembered. Due to the fact I haven’t been to a Detroit Region SCCA AutoX in a long time I sent the “Director” of AutoXs an email as to what I should do. He said you HAVE to be there before 8:00 to get teched and the first car would be on track at 9:00. OK! I got up at 6:30 this morning got ready and hit the road in my car with visions of cones in my head. I got to the parking lot at 7:45 sharp to see 6 other cars in the parking lot? OK so now I’m here let’s get teched. Some old guy looked at my car for 30 seconds and put a green dot on the windshield and a sticker on my helmet. OK now it is 8:00 LET’s GO because I’m excited. Not so fast you need to go register. OK LET’s GO. I went over and stood in line. When I got to the front of the line the grumpy SCCA lady said I need to see your SCCA card. I said well I registered on line and I didn’t bring it with me. Well after some phone calls I got my number and I was READY to go. At 9:30 we got to walk the parking lot. We walked the lot until 11:00. Alright NOW I’M ready to go. “Not so fast you are in the second run group so you need to work the “Course” as a cone chaser”. OK LET’S GO. I stood in the middle of a parking lot in full sun for 2 ½ hours in 95 degree heat. So when I finished my worker session I got to RACE……I belted in my car sunscreen in my eyes and sweat beading up on my sunburned face. I lined up and launched my car I ran up through first gear….wait….I stayed in first gear for the whole lap. OK I still have visions of cones in my head and I think I can go a little faster. 38.6 seconds later I did go faster……Yeeeehaaaa.
So, for sweating my butt off I got 5 – 38 second laps in a parking lot in Detroit. So for my $25 entry fee I got 3.2 minutes of track time. Or it cost me $7.81 a minute for “track” time. I can go to my local track and run a track event for $200 for 4 – 20 minute sessions. So that is $2.50 dollars a minute for track time and I DON’T HAVE TO STAND IN THE SUN. Humm.. so Auto crossing is cheaper?
As I drove home past all the blight in Detroit with my A/C blowing ice cold on my sun burned face I had a chance to reflect on the day……I still think this sport of ours has a place in it for everyone. If you do something and you like it keep doing it. If you don’t then stop. We all got into this to have fun. I’m going to stick to open track events and the muscle car shoot outs and suck it up during the AutoXs.
I get it. I understand AutoXing. It is just not my cup of tea…..
Check out my fancy numbers.

Great write up Mark! And you're right -- in this hobby you get to pick and choose, and do exactly what YOU want to do.
I always say to people -- there are two kinds of car guys... Greasers and waxers... I'm a greaser. I like hands on... I don't like to wax or clean. I like to DRIVE to a show - but I don't like to show.
SCCA must be full of a lot of retired NCRS guys... they sound very similar!
