Lol ... last Monday was $200 for 2 1/2 hours on 3.56 mile 19 turns, auto x is for imports!

I think autox is for events like goodguys, i.e. limited space, allows spectators a chance to see the cars as part of their entry into the show, allows rides for spectators, and more importantly it allows vendors to show their stuff to the public for hopefully future business.
It's fun, but it's very limiting for cars and drivers like you Mark. From what I've seen most cars that are fast on open track events do pretty well on the autocross also, but cars that are fast on the autocross are not always fast on the big course.
Cool car.

Well I did my first SCCA AutoX today in 15 years. It was just liked I remembered. Due to the fact I haven’t been to a Detroit Region SCCA AutoX in a long time I sent the “Director” of AutoXs an email as to what I should do. He said you HAVE to be there before 8:00 to get teched and the first car would be on track at 9:00. OK! I got up at 6:30 this morning got ready and hit the road in my car with visions of cones in my head. I got to the parking lot at 7:45 sharp to see 6 other cars in the parking lot? OK so now I’m here let’s get teched. Some old guy looked at my car for 30 seconds and put a green dot on the windshield and a sticker on my helmet. OK now it is 8:00 LET’s GO because I’m excited. Not so fast you need to go register. OK LET’s GO. I went over and stood in line. When I got to the front of the line the grumpy SCCA lady said I need to see your SCCA card. I said well I registered on line and I didn’t bring it with me. Well after some phone calls I got my number and I was READY to go. At 9:30 we got to walk the parking lot. We walked the lot until 11:00. Alright NOW I’M ready to go. “Not so fast you are in the second run group so you need to work the “Course” as a cone chaser”. OK LET’S GO. I stood in the middle of a parking lot in full sun for 2 ½ hours in 95 degree heat. So when I finished my worker session I got to RACE……I belted in my car sunscreen in my eyes and sweat beading up on my sunburned face. I lined up and launched my car I ran up through first gear….wait….I stayed in first gear for the whole lap. OK I still have visions of cones in my head and I think I can go a little faster. 38.6 seconds later I did go faster……Yeeeehaaaa.
So, for sweating my butt off I got 5 – 38 second laps in a parking lot in Detroit. So for my $25 entry fee I got 3.2 minutes of track time. Or it cost me $7.81 a minute for “track” time. I can go to my local track and run a track event for $200 for 4 – 20 minute sessions. So that is $2.50 dollars a minute for track time and I DON’T HAVE TO STAND IN THE SUN. Humm.. so Auto crossing is cheaper?
As I drove home past all the blight in Detroit with my A/C blowing ice cold on my sun burned face I had a chance to reflect on the day……I still think this sport of ours has a place in it for everyone. If you do something and you like it keep doing it. If you don’t then stop. We all got into this to have fun. I’m going to stick to open track events and the muscle car shoot outs and suck it up during the AutoXs.
I get it. I understand AutoXing. It is just not my cup of tea…..
Check out my fancy numbers.

I've never seen the numbers broken down like that Mark, well put. I haven't autocrossed for years, now (as soon as the car is ready) I am an instructor for a local open track group. Almost as much track time, but for free with a lunch thrown in! Yes, most of the track time is driven with one eye on the rear view mirror, but we usually get 2 12-15 minute "instructor sessions" that are wide open.
Autocrossing has it's place, that's where I started. But, once you get a taste of open track, it's hard to justify going back. For the competitive juices, I wonder how time trials compare?

This is the same reason I dropped drag racing, $100k+ car and a handfull of passes.
I decided seat time is what I want and goin' round corners is even more fun.

Nice story.. How long was it before you started having visions of Wine and Cheese tasings with the Ferrari group? LOL
Just curious... what class did they put you in and what was the competition like? Im going to be AutoXing my car in the coming years and sometimes wonder exactly where they think our heavily modified street cars belong. Not that I plan to actually compete but...

My local SCCA runs every other weekend just 10 miles from my house. The lack of track time and all the BS you mentioned is why I have only gone twice all year long.
I like to autocross when there is nothing else but the open track has won me over for the rest of my days.

My experience is that AutoX is "it" as long as you haven't done anything on a real track.
There are a few guys who will beleive AX is the end-all. They like the short intense competition. That is totally cool with me.
Once a person does an open track event, AX will typically seem tame. The duty cycle of work (picking cones) to play also is a negative for AX (but needed for the whole event to work).
Open track is the coolest thing - until you race wheel-to-wheel. At that point lapping seems pointless :-)

I was addicted to track days until I started Spec Miata racing. Not that I won't track the Camaro, but I don't do it much. With the exception of Motorstate and Optima Faceoff, I have not autocrossed in almost 7 years.

You pretty much hit the painful AX thing on the head Mark. It is good for newbies to learn car control. Once you have some basic car control, AX is a complete waste of a weekend day IMHO. Soooooo boooooooring. It is cheaper to buy a ticket to an amusement park as you still get the joy of waiting in line for an hour to get a 38 second really fast ride on roller coasters (that are likely faster overall frankly) and you don't have all the pain of maintaining and burning $$ on fixing a car, tires, gas, etc.
Many of the AX guys, when I really press 'em, come back to an idea that at 60 mph if they loose it they feel they have more chance of catching it and coming out better than at 120 mph on a long sweeper... so I think it is that fear and lack of ability that keeps AX going. Fine by me, and I would prefer fearful and slower people not be on the track when I am on it, so AX certainly has its place, but I agree, not my cup-o-tea.
'Course, if I had it my way everyone would have to run a lap like Top Gear does with celebs, in a simple, provided car, but have to beat a specific and reasonably fast time just to get their driver's license. Half of the Top Gear celeb board should have their licenses revoked until they learn car control and how to actually drive = different topic  That is what AX would be good for

Wow......you guys must run with clubs full of asses......
I've been auto-crossing with Oregon region of the SCCA for about 10 years now. I love track days too but the expense is too great for Me in this economy. The cost of fuel and registration on a track day covers the entry fee for Me and My wife for an entire season of Autocross. The courses We set up around here are usually 45-60 seconds and can be almost 1 1/2 miles long and we usually get 6 runs. I get two seasons out of a set of tires and the rest of the vehicle wear is negligible. But beyond the relative limited drive time the friends and camaraderie with the "regulars" in the club is priceless.
The difference in lapping and actually competing is huge for Me as well. I've won three regional championships in three different classes, one national tour event and I'm usually in the top third in the Oregon region club which has five national champions as members.
If your bored autocrossing you need to learn to drive faster.
Mark, it sounds like the Detroit area club is very unorganized and could handle some more dedicated people.
Remember the SCCA at that level is all volunteer. If you don't like the way things are going but still want to be involved, get more involved. Become a member of Your local Solo Committee.
I can see those of you who are lucky enough to have real exciting tracks near by like Blackhawk farms, Road America, Willow springs, Infinion etc...that track days would be that much more enticing. Portland International Raceway is fun but flat and 12 turns......gets a little boring after a while. The autocross course is different every time and keeps it fresh.

Blackhawk , Autobahn , no cones :unibrow: You get three (3) lap practice sessions and guarenteed three timed sessions , usually 5-6
A have a 86 C4. Its compettive ...the kicker is I have just over 6k in it
Thats including the cost of the car ,
125 .00i s typical cost of a day A Class for just about any car

Well the first run group had 55 drivers that all ran 5 times so let's assume 30 seconds a run. That is 2 hours and 17 minutes. So my 2 ½ hour working the cones was a close estimate but it felt longer.
Undeterred my buddy talked me into trying the Corvette club AutoX in a couple weekend. He said they run a better program. So if you don't like brussels sprouts try lima beans.
I'm also doing an AutoX at the LS Fest next weekend. Good practice for Optima because they have the stop box deal.

Yea I've been out to a couple of Sacramento Autocrosses at Mather Airport, and I've never seen them run a course smaller then a minute. Even for some of the fastest cars like CP class. The course is also pretty large for autox standards, and they see some third gear action. They go pretty fast.

I learned a ton off Jackass. The 2nd time around was much easier. Due to the fact we documented the build of JA so well it was easier to do a second car.
We had already sorted out:
• Wiring harness
• Engine Cal
• Clutch
• A/C
• Cooling
The main difference is I built the whole car in my shop. I was able to get stuff done just the way wanted it. When you have a shop do it sometimes things are not done exactly like you want them.
JA is a great car and part of the reason I did a bigger engine is to make Red Devil different from JA.
My car was going to have a cammed up LS7 in it until SEMA last year. I drove JA and I wanted a blown engine. Then I drove a 7.0L LS9 and I knew that is what I wanted.
JA and RD both idle at 650 RPM, A/C blows cold, no cooling issues, stop on a dime and hauls butt.
My car would not be as nice as it is if I had not done all the cars I’ve done in the past. I learn something from every build.

Seriously though - As many times as I've said that I'm tired of '69 Camaros (yeah, I've said a few times, sorry guys). Cars like J.A. and R.D. (and others) keep making me eat my words. They are simply badass cars and it is still pretty damn hard to beat the styling of a '69 Camaro.
I'm not sure how you top this build, but I have confidence that at some point Mark will proceed to do so. I'll bet he has ideas already.................

Stielow is on his way back from LS Fest. I believe he won the speed stop challenge, the 1/4 mile and the overall. He came in second to Brian Finch in the autocross. Now he needs to go back to the Walmart parking lot to practice up on Autocross.

I'm going to have to admit this AutoX was a good time. It was over a minute long and had some moderate speed stuff in it. I had a chance to run it a bunch of times and my time got a little better each lap. I can say I never could get the car to WOT unless I wanted to just do a burnout.
We didn't have to shag cones so, between runs we could just hang out and BS. Much better than standing in a parking lot.
I'm still a little off pace but I think I know how to sort that out. I will change a couple small things and I think I will be ready for SEMA and Optima.

Nice video Mark.....one thing I couldn't help noticing though was your forklift driving style. Every driving driving instructor I have ever sat next to has been known to paddle those who let the steering wheel spin through an open palm. I'm sure Mary Pozi can back Me up here. Some good shuffle steering will help keep you from getting behind on Your steering inputs and causing some of those under-steer moments.....just a friendly observation.

I had to leave early from the event but off memory my times were:
1/4 mile 11.47 at 113 mph I missed 4th gear and coasted throught the lights. My car is not legal to run in to the 10s so I stop making passes. I'm sure on that pass I would have been in the 10s easy if I hadn't tried a WOT shift to 4th. My 1/8 mile MPH was 102 and my 60 foot was 1.82 sec. On Sat we ran a 11.5X sec. at 126 MPH on a 90 degree day spinning hard.
Speed Challange is a 1/8 distance from a lunch at the drag strip timing light to the 1/8 mile traps. My best time was a 8.0X sec. My best speed was 0 - 87 - 0 MPH.
My best Auto X time was a 1:03.8 and Finch ran a 1:03.0
There was a car show but I'm unsure how that factors in.
I have not seen the final results yet but Steve Rupp called and told me I won and Stacy Tucker has all my stuff.

hey mark, i have a question for you, i have been following your build, and am doing a pro touring 67 camaro, i am run the same front sub frame as you and want to know what offset and back space the forgeline wheels you used are front and rear? i don't have pockets quite as deep as yours so im using a shafiroff racing 540 800hp bbc engine with a tko600 5 speed, i found some forged wheels i like but are half the money the forgelines are but want to get the right offset and backspacing first time around as no one near me has forged wheels that big and i don't want to be buying and returning wheels. thx for any info on the wheel dimensions, rm
69 camaros have more room. With a DSE sub they run 18x10's. With a 67 you have to run an 18x9. His sizes won't work for you.

No isses so far but I would not want to do 200 1/4 passes on it. I could smell a little cluch at the drag strip because I have to feather the launch and the 1-2 shift to keep from breaking the tires loose.
For what I use the car for it is perfect. Feels great no chatter light efforts. The Lingenfelter flywheel is the stock ZF flywheel for an LS9 except drilled for 6 bolt crank and lightened. Katech has an aluminum one but I went for the low inertia steel one.

The standard Kook's size for an LS-conversion into a 1st gen is 1 7/8". I believe that Mark said earlier that he purchased the set unwelded so that he could assemble them the way that he wanted, likely optimizing clearances.
BTW, I have a brand new set of these which I just purchased but will be selling. I'm going a different route, haven't even opened the box yet. PM me if interested, I'll post an official for-sale ad next week.

I dropped my car off to the VanNus's Tuesday night to get "tuned up" for SEMA. I got to their house Saturday night late. The car looked great they had fixed all the road rash and track abuse from the summer.

The car is working great! They had us on the new longer course so the lap times aren’t comparable. We were blowing by C-6 Z06s like they were sign posts. Lots of fun. I ran the car hard and only found a couple small problems with ABS calibrations and high speed track use.
After logging about 50 miles on Gingerman we had to take the car back to the VanNus's house to clean it up and fix more paint chips. Joe did not look impressed. lol I took his perfect car and trashed it again. We were lucky with a very good weather so we washed it out in the driveway.

Well after a pretty busy weekend getting Marks car all ready to go to SEMA, its on its way!
It was a blast going to gingerman yesterday and running around with a bunch of Z06's and porshes and just flat out blowing by them like they were sitting still. I was laughing like a little school girl going around the track with Mark lol all these corvette guys and porshe lovers never even gave the car a second look untill Mark blew by them out on the track lol. Then they all made their way over to check out what was under the hood..
After we did some more cleaning...putting Mark to work getting all the rubber out of those wheel wells!

Really, your car is officially awesome, it's so awesome I'll do this:
I, mexMan and the Lateral-G directive table oficcially declare Mark Stielow's Red Devil, formerly called Blue Bomber, '69 Chevy Camaro totally badass ([bad-as] distinctively tough or powerful; so exceptional as to be intimidating.), also would like to recognice it's double win at SEMA and OUSCI as a once in a lifetime event, achieved by the after mentioned car, giving to the same, a fair amount of points at life, this meaning:
this car is officially declared as totally awesome ([aw-suhm] Slang . very impressive) by me and the Lateral-G directive table.
Really, I love it...

Well I did my first SCCA AutoX today in 15 years. It was just liked I remembered. Mark, for someone who doesn't autocross very often, you did quite well at winning the Optima autocross event, congratulations.
I'm putting together a '67 to autocross with the SCCA. Your car/driver combination seems to be the fastest out there so it's a benchmark of sorts, though my car will be much, much less modified than yours.
A couple questions - the day you autocrossed in Detroit, what tires were you on - the 220 street tires, or R compounds?
Top PAX that day was Marcus Meredith in his ESP Mustang, about 2 seconds ahead of you. Do you think if you had autocrossed more recently and were on R compound tires, you would have been able to run his times or better?
Thanks, and congrats again!

What astounds me, after 5 years of running track days myself, is how fast and consistent Mark is, on an unfamiliar track, no less. The car is obviously awesome - saw it at SEMA and it's essentially perfect - but I'd bet Mark would have won it with any of half a dozen other cars, too.
This is what we shouldn't overlook in this hobby - driving is what it's about. The better you can drive, the better your car is. The better you can drive, the better you know how to build your car. Go out and find your local autocrosses, your nearest track days. I guarantee you, you'll get hooked. Turning wrenches and TIG welding joints will have a whole new meaning.
As for you, Mr. Stielow, I'm guessing you don't like anything that even slightly smacks of hero worship - and good for you. But I still have to say, Mark, I'm in this hobby because of the '96 Hot Rod article on the Red Witch. The vision embodied in that car inspired me, and six builds later, I have my dream car. Thanks, and I hope to lose to you in the next Optima Challenge:)

I got my car back from SEMA last Friday and took it out for the last spin of the year before winter. As I was cruising along I noticed bug guts on the windshield and the trip meter we at about 50 mile more than it had at OUSCI. Charley said he could store for a couple days at his place until a shipping company could pick it up..... hummm :faint:
It has been a fun year building this car. As I was doing 4th gear roll on burnout on Woodward I had time to think about how cool this car turned out.
I have a list of things to improve for next summer so I'll start pulling the car apart this weekend.
More Power
Better wheel speed sensors
Re-balance the brakes
Better 5 -6 gears in the box

What spring rate front and rear did you settle on for the event? Do you bump that up when running race rubber on the big track?

I did the 18 - 19 inch rims only to fit the new Goodyear Super Car tires. The spring rates were 550 front and 275 rear. I only ran the BFG R-1 once and did not change spring rates. I need some more time on those to sort it out.

I'm going to change the piston diameters on the calipers to get a better optimized brake system do work better with the ABS. I don't want to cut up the car to add a dual master. I like the brake feel of the brake booster for street and track.

Just a little road grim but no oil except for a small amount from the blown P/S rack. The car has never leaked since day one. Looking over the car everything looks great. I few loose bolts but nothing big for as much track time as this car saw this year.

Personally.... I have the maturity of a sophomore in high school... and prefer the smoke and screeching tires and wubba flying. :unibrow:
Nice job Mark! Amazing difference!

Not intended to highjack thread but I'm sure there are many novices, (like me), reading this build thread and some might have this question:
How would the elimination of the 4 point roll bar affect the chassis, (specifically first gen Camaro)?
I'm very interested to know if this is a must have to keep car from twisting. In your opinion, would it be useless to spend the money on subframe and aftermarket rear suspension and not add a roll bar?
I have two boys under 5 that I'd like to share this hobby with and would like to weigh out options. I'm 80% certain I'd rather be able to put them in the back seat without a roll bar versus having a two seat Camaro that gains the last x% of performance.

You can always have a removable cross bar for the times you are street cruisin'.

Or maybe you don't need 800 some odd ft-lbs of torque and therefore also not the cage?

They strip them for $50. For assembled hose ends it may cost more due to the stainless steel pin in the fitting that can't be anodized. You will need to call them to get the details on hose ends. I only did adaptor fittings, trim rings, battery holders and knobs.
Mark
I know this is a really old post...but it's the first time I got to go through it. Did you know that you can simply buy all the fittings already black hard anodized from XRP? :)

Did this car ever see a chassis dyno in the current tune ? Probably a dumb question because I can't imagine it hasn't been posted on this thread. Would be interesting to see the comparison to the engine dyno.
Good points about the engine and leaks. I thought I was the only one. Always finding little (and not so little drips) here and there. Always thought braided hoses and AN fittings were the bomb but now I"m finding that most of them end up leaking a bit too. Usually around the hose/joint interface, or I suspect on the swivel fittings maybe the swivel area, hard to say, you can clean it up and idle and driveway rev it all day long - no leaks. Street drive, mild leaks. Track drive - messy leaks. I couldn't afford it during buildup, but slowly I'm replacing my hand built hoses with pro-crimped style. Saves weight too.
With the latest artivcle from Hot Rod on the PTFE hoses I'm trying to figure out which ones are teflon as well. The Aeroquip startlite stuff is still rubber hose. My fuel is all teflon but its the old style stiff teflon stuff.
Anyway don't want to hijack into a hose topic, just letting you know I appreciate your excitement about a leak free motor.

Mark - Did you run ceramic brakes on this car or just Jackass? If so what parking brake mechanism did you use for the rear corvette brakes? I have a project I'm working on to combine that currently.
Thanks

I ran iron rotors on Red Devil vs. Jackass. The main reason was ABS calibration with iron rotors vs. carbon fiber. The carbon fiber rotors require a unique ABS calibration. I'm working on sorting out the carbon rotor ABS issue. The carbon rotors can be a bit touchy at the limit for tire lock-up.
For the parking brake I used Baer racing stuff modified to use the Corvette brakes.
I'm building some new stuff for resolve some ABS sensor issues and a more robust park break system.
If it works I'll post some photos soon.
I have sent the math data to the machine shop and I should have parts soon.

Mark is it a heat issue with the carbon rotors for the ABS???

The characteristic of the carbon brakes are a lot differernt from the iron rotor system. As the carbon brakes get hotter they gain output to a point. Once iron rotors get warm there output goes down as they get hotter. The ABS calibration is unique for the ZR-1 with carbon brakes and the controller is made by Bosch. I used a Delphi controller on Red Devil and could not sort out the Bosch system yet. My system was optimized around the iron rotors of the stock Z06 system. I'm working on sorting out the carbon brakes better. They work great on Jackass and on Polly's car at the OUSCI. It just takes a slighly different technique (talent) to drive them with out ABS.

Mark,
Hey I stopped by your car a couple times over the weekend at the Detroit Autorama but never caught up with you. I did buy a copy of your book...very cool!
Hopefully I will see you at some Goodguys shows over the year with my "Project Nasty" 69 Mustang.

Pumped to watch the coverage on SPEED tonight of the Optima Ultimate Street Car Invitational, the Red Witch is just a fantastic build from so many standpoints. Ever since I've started reading about Stielow's latest build in magazines and now in this thread, I've been curious as to where the track tow hook was sourced. I've searched the web and found few instances of 1st gen Camaros with tow hooks installed, and it appears to be a custom set up. I want to put one on my 68 and unfortunately, as with the rest of my build so far l rely on seeing what other's have done that I like. Essentially I'd like to copy cat a tow hook set-up, but so far this is the best example I've seen of one on a 1st gen. Anyone have any thoughts on the matter?
Once again, great build! Once I found this thread I was online for hours going through every page of it!

Mark,
Congrats on your accolades at SEMA and the Optima challenge. Followed your builds over the years, and thought you had reached the pinnacle with the Mule. Going to be tough to top this one!
Read that you have 3.25 gears out back. I'm curious as to your thought process on arriving at that number. Do you have some different gears in the T56? I'm finishing up a similar 69 with an LS7/T56. Currently have 4.10s and finding 1st gear is worthless, but with a 3.25 my top two gears would be really steep. How does it work with your setup?
Thanks,
Bill

Mr. Stielow, Where do we buy your book I see people talking about? Does is detail your ABS system work? And does it go over your computer choices for the ECM's and if or what you did with the LAN systems for the LS7/LS9?
Thanks

You can order the book at http://sdparts.com/ but it does not detail the ABS. Mark isn't going to risk someone getting hurt relying on info he gives out. If he gets it all sorted out to where it is bulletproof I'm sure he will let everyone know how to do it.
